Bowral is bursting with things to do, from living it up in a country estate to trawling for books and antiques and sipping great coffee.

You’ll find a lot of things to do in Bowral , in the heart of NSW’s  Southern Highlands . It’s a destination for all seasons offering everything from spring blooms to autumn foliage and from croquet on the lawn on a summer’s day to sipping wine by a log fire in winter. And that’s not to mention the cafe culture, sporting history and retail therapy you’ll find on any day of the year. Here, our list of the best things to do in Bowral, located just 90 minutes by car from both  Sydney  and  Canberra .

1. Visit the galleries in Bowral

Anyone visiting the Highlands enclave of Bowral is bound to ask: what is the best thing to do in Bowral? Well, stepping inside the regional gallery Ngunungula is now considered to be up there with the very best. The gallery founded by award-winning artist Ben Quilty is set within a meadow of wildflowers on an old dairy farm on the Retford Park estate.

Ngunungula means ‘belonging’ in the traditional language of the Gundungurra First Nations people, and it’s the first regional art gallery in the Southern Highlands to offer a space for creatives. As well as hosting significant exhibitions, the gallery will offer workshops and artist talks.

Hearth by Moonacres is adjacent to the gallery and is committed to the ethical production of food delivered from the paddock to the plate. Book in for a farm tour with owner Phil Lavers to feel the soil and taste the produce and understand where your food has come from. The cafe collaborates with the gallery over summer with the hip and happening Ngunungula Nights, a program of live music, food and drinks over summer.

The Milk Factory Gallery and dinky Bowral Gallery are also worth a visit.

2. Check into a Bowral country estate

Bowral became a fashionable summer retreat for Sydney’s gentry at the end of the 19 th  century and many great country estates were built as a result of this early tourism boom.

Fast-forward more than a century and many of these old manor houses now provide  unique accommodation in the Southern Highlands .

Properties like Peppers Craigieburn Bowral or Peppers Manor House Sutton Forest , Berida Hotel and The Coach House at The Rift Estate combine heritage charm with modern luxuries, elegant grounds to wander, atmospheric common spaces with roaring open fires, and more often than not a croquet lawn, tennis court and billiards room.

Osborn House is located a half-hour drive away in Bundanoon and must be included in a round-up of places to put on your radar. The Pill Factory is also in Bundanoon, so again, it’s beyond Bowral, but the quirky sandstone accommodation is one of the coolest places to stay in the Southern Highlands.

3. Connect the dots between Bowral’s best cafes

A hands-down highlight of any trip to Bowral is browsing its town centre and dipping into its hip cafes for your caffeine fix.

Make a beeline for the junction of Bong Bong and Banyette streets where you’ll find an array of options starting with The Press Shop , housed in a harmonious space within the flagship Bespoke Letterpress building. The Press Shop serves excellent coffee and handcrafted teas.

Just down the street in the thriving Green Lane shopping and dining precinct is Plantation (the sister venue to popular restaurant and wine bar Harry’s On Green Lane , next door). The light and plant-filled space serves Double Roasters coffee, fresh-baked goods and an all-day menu.

Sitting pretty just opposite is Bowral institution Dirty Janes – a vintage emporium with a tea salon. Note that fossicking for vintage finds here is one of the best things to do in Bowral.

4. Have high tea at Dirty Janes

Dirty Janes’ tea salon, Your Vintage Occasion , serves a famed high tea that you’d be remiss not to treat yourself to.

Enjoy this most quintessentially English endeavour while you sip on Highlands Tea Company brews from dainty cups and saucers, and nibble on pinwheel sandwiches.

While we’ve got our eye on a range of flavours, such as the lavender, rose, and white chocolate and cinnamon, you can’t go past the classic scone for country comfort. There are also gluten-free options available, and all come with the requisite generous dollops of jam and cream on the side. Book ahead on weekends.

Dirty Jane’s is also set to open Salter’s Licensed Café, another spin-off that will brighten your day in Bowral.

5. Browse the shops in Bowral

From bookshops to antique stores and boutiques, Bowral is a shopping mecca . The thriving Green Lane precinct, a haven for those in the market for unique gardens and homewares, is a great place to start.

It’s home to The Potting Shed, which sells rustic garden ornaments, terracotta pots, tools, gifts for gardeners and more, and The Orangery, which sells indoor plants, cold-climate perennials, topiary, water features and garden furniture alongside a careful edit of Italian linen clothing and Portuguese porcelain by Bordello Pinheiro.

Green Lane adjoins Dirty Janes Antique Market, a mecca for those who love sourcing unique vintage pieces – from furnishings to ornaments and jewellery – that’s home to over 60 independent dealers, decorators and upcyclers.

Round the corner on Bong Bong Street, Arkke is a concept store selling a curated selection of designer clothing and accessories. Other boutiques worth checking out in town include The South Store, The Bronte Tram and Barbara’s Storehouse for one-of-a-kind homewares and furniture. Cookshop Plus for copper pans, cast-iron Dutch ovens and whistling cooktop kettles; and the full-to-the-brim Bookshop Bowral for all your literary needs.

If you’re after homewares more quirky than quaint, visit All the Wild Horses which is a lot of fun and where you can find everything from furs to gold leopard-print lamps. Highlands Emporium and Few & Far are two more not-so-hidden gems. Followers of fashion designer Collette Dinnigan will be delighted to know she has opened a homewares store in the old post office in Mittagong. Visit Rabbit Trap Timber in nearby Sutton Forest to get inspiration for your rustic farmhouse fit-out.

6. Enjoy the best Bowral restaurants

The Southern Highlands has become somewhat of a hub for foodies and eating out is one of the best things to do in Bowral. Make a dinner reservation at  Onesta Cucina , a much-loved family-owned restaurant, the name of which translates to ‘honest kitchen’. This atmospheric spot, with its ambient lighting and vintage Campari posters, serves high-quality, hearty Italian fare.

The menu changes every day but could include an appetiser of warm, marinated Ligurian olives for the table followed by a primi of fried soft-shelled mud crab with salsa verde. We’d also recommend ordering a few pasta dishes like orecchiette with gorgonzola and rosemary ragu or a finely tuned secondi like a whole Snowy River rainbow trout with brown herb butter and almonds.

The menu is complemented by a carefully crafted wine list. We’ve asked our network of locals for recommendations and they’ve all recommended Bistro Sociale, tucked away in the charming Berida Hotel, as one of the best restaurants in Bowral.

7. Explore the Bradman Museum

Bowral is the hometown of cricketing icon Sir Donald Bradman and the  Bradman Museum & International Cricket Hall of Fame  is where to go to explore his legacy.

Set on the edge of Bradman Oval in pretty Glebe Park, the museum incorporates interactive displays with fascinating memorabilia and a collection of national significance that tells the story not only of Bradman himself but of cricket itself – from its origins right through to the Big Bash League.

The museum is also the start and finish point of a self-guided tour of Bowral from Bradman’s perspective. The leisurely 1.7-kilometre Bradman Walk takes about 45 minutes to complete and visits historic sites associated with the legend, including his childhood homes, schools and church.

8. Stroll through Bowral’s stunning gardens

Elegant gardens have long been a drawcard for visitors to the Southern Highlands and Corbett Gardens, in the centre of Bowral, is one of its oldest and most beautiful.

Tulip Time at Corbett Gardens Bowral

Corbett Gardens is a highlight of a visit to Bowral. (Image: DNSW)

It dates back to 1911 when the local tourist association, at the suggestion of one Ada Corbett, purchased a disused patch of land in the centre of Bowral called Deadmans Paddock and transformed it into a public park.

With its huge array of tulips and colourful springtime bulbs, Corbett Gardens is the centrepiece of Tulip Time Festival which is held each September. The countryside is also within reach at Southern Highlands Botanical Gardens , which has a beautiful grove of birch trees and sculptures dotted around the landscape.

9. Hit up a Southern Highlands winery

The Southern Highlands is a relatively young wine region , with a high elevation and seasons that are perfectly primed to produce cool-climate wines like pinot noir, chardonnay and sparkling varieties.

From its beginnings in the 1990s, the region now has more than 60 vineyards and 15 cellar doors, which offer extra incentive to get out and explore the beautiful rural landscape here.

Take the Southern Highlands wine trail to make the most of it – stops include Bendooley Estate , where you can also explore the Berkelouw Book Barn ; Joadja Estate , the region’s oldest; and Tractorless Vineyard , an urban cellar door in Braemar, a 15-minute drive from Bowral. Stop by for a glass of wine at Centennial Vineyards and linger over a long lunch featuring local produce from the surrounding area.

10. Take a hike (and pack a picnic)

Get a taste of bushwalking in the Southern Highlands by exploring the Mt Gibraltar Reserve on the outskirts of town.

Here, 130 hectares of restored natural forest surround the summit of the collapsed volcano Mt Gibraltar – at 863 metres, it’s the highest point between Sydney and Canberra.

Jellore Lookout

Enjoy stunning views from the Jellore Lookout, Mittagong.

From up here you can see three different perspectives via the Bowral, Mittagong and Jellore lookouts; the 1.2-kilometre Rim Track connects all three.

Bendooley Estate Larder is the place to go to pack a picnic. The Larder has tapped the chefs in the kitchens of Bendooley Estate and raided the paddocks and pantries of its favourite providores to provide a showcase of the region’s bounty. One of the best things to do in Bowral is pack a picnic basket full of local produce and enjoy it alongside stunning views of the rolling countryside.

11. Visit nearby towns

No trip to Bowral is complete without spending a day idling between its surrounding towns, each with its own distinct character and history and within an easy drive of one another.

The Boston

Stop by the ivy-clad cafe The Boston in Mittagong. (Image: Abbie Melle)

Don’t miss Mittagong, with its ivy-clad cafe The Boston serving one of the best brunches around; Berrima , where you can score a table for coffee and cake at Berkelouw’s famous Book Barn on Bendooley Estate and duck into old-school lolly store Lolly Swagman for road trip treats.

Mark nearby Moss Vale on your map for its collection of boutiques, cafes and old-school Bernie’s Diner (for the best Rueben sandwich outside of NYC).

The best things to do in Bowral

Use the table of contents to jump down the article - or continue reading for all my tips on the best things to do in Bowral.

The Bradman Museum

Milk factory gallery, bowral art gallery, historic berrima, national trust, retford park, mary poppins statue, wine tasting, bowral beekeeping, southern highlands pie trail, corbett gardens, southern highlands botanic gardens, mount gibraltar reserve, fitzroy falls, cecil hoskins nature reserve, where to eat in bowral.

The Southern Highlands has long been the country playground for Sydneysiders and, as the biggest town in the region, it’s no great surprise there are lots of things to do in Bowral.

Growing up in Sydney, I always thought of Bowral as a destination for older people – it had antique furniture, homeware stores, and high teas. And, while all of those things still exist, it’s also evolved in recent years.

These days, Bowral has become much more of a primary residence for a lot of people, as opposed to just a weekend holiday house destination. And that means the community has grown and strengthened.

In the centre of town, you’ll find new restaurants, cafes, and bars that have a more modern and youthful energy (partly because they are run by more modern and youthful people than you may have found in the past).

And then, around town, there are also new businesses that have brought a different style to the region. It’s opened up Bowral and the Southern Highlands to a broader demographic, I feel.

Having said that, though, the Southern Highlands are still what they have always been – lush green rolling hills with charming little towns and picturesque farms between them.

With the higher altitude, it’s much cooler than the coast and you really feel that in winter (although the sunny days are glorious). It’s still a place where you enjoy a crisp walk during the day and a bottle of wine by the fire in the evening

You can visit Bowral as a day trip from Sydney (it’s only about 90 minutes drive) or even as a day trip from Canberra (it’s about two hours). But you won’t have time to see much of the Southern Highlands region.

I would recommend staying for at least one or two nights (it makes a nice weekend trip if you stay Friday and Saturday nights, for example).

When you’re here, you’ll realise how many things to do in Bowral there actually are – from eating and drinking, to exploring the history, discovering some of the new businesses and local experiences, and getting out amongst the nature.

Although there are lots of things to see in Bowral, the main museums are a good way to start, to see some of the iconic history and culture of the region.

From small beginnings, the Bradman Museum in Bowral has grown into a large complex that now includes the International Cricket Hall of Fame. It’s an acknowledgement that the centre is about more than just Don Bradman.

There is a gallery dedicated to Bradman but the other exhibitions cover an introduction to cricket, stories about some of the game’s most important players, significant moments or eras in its history, and the current state of the game.

The museum has become a bit of a pilgrimage site for cricket fans from across the world but even people without a strong interest will get something out of a visit.

Right in the heart of Bowral, the original milk factory was built here in 1921. But since 2005 it has been used as a space to exhibit art from creators in the region and further afield.

Exhibitions change regularly at the Milk Factory Gallery so it’s worth popping in to see what’s on the walls at the moment. There’s usually a good range of different mediums and artists with various backgrounds.

Operating for more than 60 years, the Bowral Art Gallery is an institution in the region. It’s not particularly large and it won’t take you too long to visit, but there’s plenty to see here.

The art gallery supports local artists, giving professionals and enthusiasts a chance to exhibit some of their work. There are working studios within the gallery and also regular classes that you could join if you have an interest.

Let’s look now at the heritage of Bowral and the Southern Highlands because there’s a lot of interesting history here.

The traditional owners of the land, the Gundungurra and D’harawal people, lived here for thousands of years before Europeans first formally settled the area in 1819. The first settlement was Bong Bong, near where Moss Vale now is. The second settlement was Berrima.

Visiting Berrima is a great thing to do from Bowral – it’s just a ten minute drive away. When Berrima was founded in 1831, the idea was to make it the major town in the region. That’s why you’ll find the large sandstone courthouse and gaol from the 1830s.

In the end, that didn’t happen and the train line went through Moss Vale and Mittagong instead. But historic Berrima still has one of the state’s best preserved Georgian villages and you’ll see many of the important heritage buildings just walking along the main street.

The gaol is in use again so you can’t visit that, but there’s a good exhibition in the courthouse. At the other end of town, there’s also the local museum.

There are three National Trust properties in the Southern Highlands and each shows a different style of heritage.

In Berrima, there is Harper’s Mansion , built in 1834. It’s a great example of what the town could have been if it had expanded as planned.

Just south, in Sutton Forest, is Golden Vale Homestead . This grand sandstone home was built in 1870 and set in about 200 acres, much of it laid out as an English style garden.

And then, there’s the most impressive – Retford Park in Bowral. This large four-bedroom residence in pink Italianate style was built in 1887 by Samuel Hordern and then bought in 1964 by James Fairfax, who turned it into a sumptuous country residence.

The house was set in an enormous rural estate but a lot of the land has now been sold off. Still, there’s a large garden with lots to see. Inside the house is an impressive collection of art and antiques that belonged to James Fairfax.

He passed away in 2017 and bequeathed it all to the National Trust so it could be open to the public. (It’s currently closed because of Coronavirus and will reopen later in 2020).

Another little bit of Bowral history to look out for is the Mary Poppins statue in Glebe Park. If you’re wondering why it’s here, it’s because the creator of Mary Poppins, author PL Travers, lived in Bowral as a child from 1908 to 1917.

The statue shows Mary Poppins in an iconic pose, flying with her umbrella held aloft in one hand. It’s quick and free to see the artwork and may be a nice little diversion for the kids.

Local experiences

Although there’s been a lot of urban development in the Southern Highlands, and many people who visit just for a day trip stay only in a town like Bowral, the region is still has lots of important agricultural land.

If you drive along the roads between the towns, you’ll see a lot of farms (and realise how pretty they are here – especially at sunset or when the fog rolls in). But there are also some good ways to try some of the local produce.

To get out on the land, you can visit Redleaf Farm for a tour of this fascinating farm. There are Highland cows, Saddleback pigs, sheep, chickens… And actually a whole menagerie, including peacocks and a miniature donkey called Hector.

Redleaf Farm has a waterfall and a swimming hole – as well as two old train carriages that have been converted into incredible self-contained accommodation that are perfect for a special couples retreat or family experience.

It’s a beautiful spot with lots of different ways to experience it.

There are some wonderful wineries in the region and so an afternoon (or morning, even) of wine tasting is a great thing to do around Bowral.

You can use the Highlands Tour Co to put together an itinerary and drive you between the tastings, if you want to make it easier. Of you can do it yourself, of course.

One of the most popular wineries around Bowral is Centennial Vineyards , which offers a lovely tasting. My favourite is Bendooley Estate , which has a fantastic space for tastings. It’s part of the large complex that blends a book shop with a casual cafe and a more upmarket restaurant.

The region is cool climate and high altitude so the pinot noir and riesling are some of the specialties. Other good wineries to visit in the Southern Highlands are Artemis Wines , and Cherry Tree Hill .

For something that’s been getting quite a buzz recently (sorry), there’s Bowral Beekeeping . You don’t need to be an active beekeeper to get involved in the activities here – and there are lots of things to do.

You can take a tour to get up close with a colony to learn all about the lives of bees, you can do a honey tasting, or you can join the extended experience to do an inspection of a flow hive.

Another of the local specialties in the Southern Highlands is the humble pie – done not so humbly. The local bakers take great pride in always trying to upstage each other with new creations and the annual Southern Highlands PieFest is where they are officially judged.

You can still get involved any time of the year with the Pie Trail , a map of about 30 local outlets that all offer pies.

I would recommend the Eden Pie or lamb and rosemary from Gumnut Patisserie , a chicken with leek and camembert from the Robertson Pie Shop , a simple steak pie from Polly’s Pies , or the Ned Kelly (a breakfast pie with beef, egg, and bacon) at Heatherbrae’s .

One of the most popular things to do in Bowral is to wander the streets and do a bit of shopping – window or otherwise. There are dozens of wonderful shops here, offering antiques, homewares, and clothes.

A lot of the arts and crafts is homemade locally, and you’ll find some real treasures – while other stores pride themselves on curating the finest collection of goods from across the country.

A good place to start is at Green Lane, a little precinct that has a selection of dining and shopping options. The leafy courtyard gives you access to the popular restaurant Harry’s on Green Lane , decorated with plants, books, and other travel memorabilia.

For something a bit quicker, you can grab a coffee at Plantation and then browse the various shops that sell plants, pots, candles, jewellery, European homewares, and even garden furniture.

Next door to Green Lane is the most famous of the antique stores in Bowral, Dirty Janes , which is really a market full of smaller vintage sellers with a fascinating and eclectic mix of items, from tiny fittings to enormous set pieces. (The high tea here is also very popular!)

People often make a trip specially to Bowral just for the antiques because there are so many good stores here (although they can be a bit pricey). A couple of other good spots to try are Lancelot Hill Antiques and The Bronte Tram – although it’s worth noting you’ll also find antique stores at other towns in the Southern Highlands, if you’re looking for something in particular.

There’s no shortage of small shops in Bowral offering all sorts of niche products and, even if you’re not in the market for anything, they’re worth popping into to appreciate the interior design and decorations.

A few shops of note that may be of interest include the designer clothing at Arkke , the kitchenware at Cookshop Plus , homewares at Barbara’s Storehouse , and (my favourite) stationery at Bespoke Letterpress .

Once you’ve seen the grand historic homes that exist around Bowral, you won’t be surprised to find out there are also quite opulent gardens in the region – particularly the English style, which suits the Southern Highlands climate.

You’re able to see some of the private gardens when you visit heritage sites (like Retford Park) but there are also a couple of public gardens worth popping into.

Right in the centre of town, Corbett Gardens dates back to 1911 when the local tourist association bought it so it could be public. It’s a lovely spot for a short stroll or for a rest with a coffee.

Where Corbett Gardens really comes alive, though, is at the annual Tulip Time Festival when there are more than 75,000 tulips on display! There’s an entry fee when that’s on.

One of the lovely things about the Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens is that the site is a work in progress and changes every time you visit. Not all of the 15 hectare gardens have been developed yet, but there’s still lots to see.

The landscaping is broken up into different sections, including gardens for each season, a nursery, and a playground for children. In winter, the plants make the most of the cool climate, while there are plenty of flowers in spring.

I’ve mainly focused so far on the town of Bowral itself and the things you can do in the urban centre, or nearby properties. But, of course, the Southern Highlands are such a scenic region and getting out into the nature is a wonderful thing to do when you’re visiting Bowral.

Just a five minute drive (or 40 minute walk) from the centre of town, past the Bowral Lookout, is Mount Gibraltar Reserve , at the top of a collapse volcanic core that’s 150 million years old.

It’s the highest point between Sydney and Canberra (but still not that high – just 863 metres above sea level) and has lovely views across Bowral and the region. The eucalyptus forest is home to lots of wildlife and there are walking trails and picnic areas here.

Although it’s about 20 minutes away by car, I’m mentioning Fitzroy Falls because I think this is one of the best natural spots in the Southern Highlands and is definitely worth a trip from Bowral for half a day.

Fitzroy Falls itself is a spectacular waterfall about 80 metres high that drops down a sheer sandstone escarpment. There are paths on either side that you can take to good viewpoints to take in the whole waterfall.

Fitzroy Falls is within Morton National Park and you can continue along the walking trails to get to some other smaller waterfalls and incredible views across the valley. (Another option for spectacular waterfalls is Belmore Falls , just a bit further on.)

If you’re looking for another option closer to Bowral, Cecil Hoskins Nature Reserve is a beautiful park that doesn’t have quite as many visitors. At its centre is a wetland environment created when a weir was built here in the 1920s.

The water has attracted over 90 species of birds, so it’s a great spot for birdwatching. There are also some short walks and a picnic area, which makes a great place to stop if you’ve got your own lunch.

When it comes to food, you really are spoiled for choice in Bowral and the surrounding area in the Southern Highlands. You’ll find a huge range of options and it’s pretty easy just to spend your whole visit just eating and drinking!

I’ll offer a few suggestions of mine to help, but don’t be afraid to ask the locals for their recommendations as well.

For delicious (but slightly casual) meals, try the Grand Bistro , which is run by a lovely couple who used to own the Flat White cafe in Woollahra in Sydney. The Press Shop is a cute little cafe that is also popular for brunch. And the Imperial Hotel has great pub food and a cosy atmosphere.

If you are looking for something less casual, there’s the excellent restaurant at Bendooley Estate , the well-regarded Italian at Onesta Cucina , or – my favourite – the inventive Eschalot in a heritage building in Berrima.

For coffee, I would recommend Rush Roasting Co , which has cafes in Bowral and Moss Vale. You’ll also see their coffee at other outlets through the highlands.

Looking for the best things to do in Bowral?

You’re in luck! As a New South Wales local, I recently had the chance to visit Bowral and let me tell you, it was such an amazing town! Despite being the big kid on the block in the Southern Highlands, it’s surprisingly walkable.

Most Aussies might name-drop Bowral as Sir Don Bradman’s birthplace, but believe me when I say, it’s got a lot more going for it. What’s on the menu, you ask? Well, it’s bursting with everything from artsy cafes and hidden gem wineries to antique markets that feel like stepping into a time machine.

But the cherry on top? The natural beauty is something else – waterfalls that take your breath away, wild swimming spots that’ll make you feel like you’re in a nature documentary and walking trails that serve up incredible views.

Lurking in some seriously good-looking countryside, Bowral is the dream Sydney weekend escape. This blog post will take you through the best things to do in Bowral and the surrounding area.

Things to do in Bowral this weekend

Things to do in Bowral Bradman Museum

Visit the Bradman Museum and International Cricket Hall of Fame

Celebrating Bowral’s most famous son is the Bradman Museum, which first opened in 1989 alongside an oval where he played many of his earliest cricket games. It now encompasses the International Cricket Hall of Fame where you can learn about the origins of the game and its legendary players, as well as the controversies that have left their mark on the sport over its decades of play. There are also exhibits dedicated to Sir Donald Bradman’s humble origins in the Southern Highlands and his test batting average of 99.94. After your visit, you can admire the heritage-listed Bradman Oval or let the kids run loose in the cricket-themed playground.

Tour the Southern Highlands Wine Region

With its mild temperatures and rich volcanic soils, the Southern Highlands is ideal for the cultivation of cool-climate wines, such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It is a relatively new wine-growing region, with the first commercial wineries established in the 1980s. More than 60 vineyards now dot the region’s stunning rural landscapes and there are around 15 cellar doors open to the public for tastings. Stop in at the historic Joadja Estate (the oldest winery in the Southern Highlands), learn about the sustainable practices used at the Tractorless Vineyard and explore the famous Berkelouw Book Barn at the Bendooley Estate.

Sydney to Canberra Drive Day 1 Stop at Bowral Boutique Shops

Get your retail fix in Bowral’s boutiques

Bowral is dotted with upmarket boutiques and independent stores where you’ll find designer clothing, one-of-a-kind homewares and unique garden products. Head to the Green Lane precinct to shop for gardening gifts at the Potting Shed or pick up indoor plants and porcelain ware at The Orangery. In nearby Dirty Janes Antique Market, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to vintage goods while unique homewares are a feature of Barbara’s Storehouse. Bookworms shouldn’t miss the Bookshop Bowral, which will inspire your next literary adventure.

Admire the artworks of the Milk Factory Gallery

Situated in the heart of Bowral is this gallery and exhibition space, which was established in 2005 in a historic dairy depot. The lofty-ceilinged space provides the perfect setting for showcasing contemporary artworks across a wide range of disciplines, including painting, sculpture, woodwork, glass art and ceramics. Aside from solo exhibitions featuring the work of particular artists, the Milk Factory Gallery also presents group shows of photographic works, prints and etchings. Be sure to stop in at the gallery shop, which is well stocked with handmade gifts.

Relax in the Corbett Gardens

Bowral’s most famous green space dates back to 1911 when Mrs. Ada Corbett suggested that the local tourism association purchase a piece of disused land known as “Deadman’s Paddock” and turn it into a public park. It is now the centrepiece for the town’s annual Spring Garden Festival, which sees more than 75,000 tulips in full bloom. But Corbett Gardens is an inspiring place to visit throughout the year, with pathways fringed by mature trees and formal flower beds planted with seasonal displays.

Walk the Bradman Trail

The Bradman Museum and International Cricket Hall of Fame serves as the start and finish point of the self-guided Bradman Trail, which takes in many of the sites associated with the legendary sportsman. Pick up a free map to enjoy the leisurely 1.7-kilometre route, which can be completed in around 45 minutes. Among the 10 stops (all of which are well signposted) are his childhood school, his first workplace and the two Bowral homes where he grew up. Also of note is the historic Empire Cinema on Bong Bong Street where Bradman was given an official farewell before departing for The Ashes Tour in 1930.

Hike through Mount Gibraltar Reserve

Located halfway between Bowral and Mittagong is this collapsed volcanic core, which is known affectionately by locals as “The Gib”. At 863 metres above sea level (the highest point between Sydney and Canberra), it offers magnificent views across the Southern Highlands. Mount Gibraltar Reserve has also been listed on the State Heritage Register due to its historical significance, with trachyte quarried here for 100 years and used to build many notable public buildings. Today, it is traversed by hiking trails that will appeal to all abilities, including the short Rim Track that connects many of the reserve’s lookouts. From the Mittagong Lookout, you can see all the way to Sydney on a clear day!

Photograph the cherry blossoms of Settlers Park

Home to the Bowral Vietnam War Memorial, Settlers Park lies along the Mittagong Rivulet in the town’s north. It marks the start of the Cherry Tree Walk, which was planted with 526 trees in the mid-1990s to commemorate each of the Australians who died during the conflict. Coincide your visit with Vietnam Veterans Day on August 18 or experience the cherry trees in bloom between late September and early October.

Things to do with kids in Bowral Botanic Gardens

Explore the Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens

Sprawling across 15 hectares, the community-run Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens was established as recently as 2015, with landscape architects Taylor Cullity Lethlean at the helm. While it is still a work in progress, several areas are complete and ready to explore, such as the magnificent Birch Grove and the bird-filled Winter Garden. Kids will love exploring the Meadow Labyrinth and the children’s playground, not to mention tracking down the 15 teddy bears that are hiding amidst the foliage. There is also a picnic shelter where you can enjoy lunch and an on-site nursery if you’re looking to spruce up your home garden.

Hit up the Highlands Entertainment Centre

Forming part of the Highlands Hub SuperCentre, this entertainment complex includes 10 tenpin bowling lanes, an 18-hole miniature golf course and an abundance of arcade games. It’s a great place to head on a rainy day, with a fully licensed on-site cafe where you can feast on sweet potato fries, burgers, hot dogs and Turkish-inspired gozleme. Ten pin bowling fans should coincide their visit with a Friday or Saturday evening when you can enjoy unlimited games between 5 and 8 pm.

Golfers can test their skills at the Moss Vale Golf Club, which boasts one of the most beautiful courses in New South Wales.

Berrima

A 10-minute drive west of Bowral will see you in Berrima, a historic village on the banks of the Wingecarribee River. The Berrima Heritage Walk takes in the Regency-style Berrima Courthouse, which dates from the 1830s, and one of Australia’s oldest pubs, the convict-built Surveyor General Inn. The region is dotted with bookshops, where bookworms can enjoy hours browsing.

Second-hand bookshops are selling rare books and there are several bookshops with popular coffee shops.

The Berkelouw Book Barn in nearby Berrima is a famous bookstore and cafe.

Retford Park in Bowral is a stately pink Italianate home built in 1887 by merchant Samuel Hordern and sold to James Fairfax in 1964.

The house was once part of a massive rural property, which has since been carved up.

It has lovely landscaped gardens, which are open to the public on the first weekend every month, and an art collection that belonged to James Fairfax, who bequeathed the home and contents to the National Trust when he passed away in 2017.

Retford Park is at 1325 Old South Road, Bowral.

Another fun thing to do in the Southern Highlands is to attend the Pie Festival, where local bakers compete to create the best pie in the land.

The atmosphere during the festival is vibrant, but you can still go on a hunt for pies at local bakeries on the Pie Trail all year round.

Enjoy pie-themed events such as a winter solstice forest feast, a pie hunt or a pie and cycle tour.

The Southern Highlands Pie Festival is in winter, usually June each year, starting on Australia’s national pie day on the first day of the month.

The Southern Highlands has long been a NSW destination for luxury travellers , and there’s a pick of luxury escapes where you can enjoy fine wine in front of the fireplace, luxuriate in a wellness spa or relax in a garden. Here are some of our top picks:

  • The Rift Estate’s Coach House in Bowral is a luxury six-bedroom home that was once the estate’s stables in the 19th century.

I just love Bowral and the rest of the Southern Highlands as it reminds me of the British countryside. We used to visit Bowral a lot a few years back, but since we’ve been travelling up and down the East Coast of Australia recently, it was so nice to come back and remember how gorgeous it truely is.

Bowral is the main town in the Southern Highlands. Although I used to call the whole area Kangaroo Valley, Kangaroo Valley is actually one of the other towns which make up the Southern Highlands. Whilst there are so many things to do in Southern Highlands, we’re talking specifically about Bowral in today’s article.

This town is a foodies dream, with restaurants, winery tours and gorgeous shops to spend a beautiful day trip from Sydney. Visit some of the nearby towns and attractions, throw in some of the beautiful country drives, and you’ve got yourself a fun filled weekend from Sydney.

How To Get To Bowral In New South Wales

bowral-map

Bowral is actually one of the easiest day trips from Sydney or weekends away by train. It takes almost the same time to drive to Bowral as it does to catch the train. With it being just 1h30m travel time, you have enough time to make the most of your trip.

Almost everywhere we mention in this article is accessible by foot from Bowral train station. If you don’t drive, you’ll miss out on the exceptional Red Cow Farm Gardens, an amazing country drive, walking tracks and the famous Southern Highlands waterfalls.

Personally, I would drive because you’ll be able to see so much more. If I was driving, I would travel to Bowral inland via Campbelltown, then drive down to Kangaroo Valley, stop off in Berry and up via the coast on the way back.

I’ll write a Bowral Itinerary soon to help you plan your trip if needed. If you’re interested in more of a foodies trip with some shopping thrown in, then catch the train! In the meantime, you can check out our full guide to Southern Highlands !

Things To Do In Bowral

We’re going to break this Bowral guide up with the best restaurants, things to do and where to stay, so you have everything you need to know in one place.

Bowral Restaurants

There are so many amazing places to eat in Bowral, just be prepared to spend the whole day eating your way through the town! Here are some of the best Bowral restaurants.

1. The Mill For Lunch & Co-Working

the-mill-bowral-veggie-nook

We actually went to check out the co-working space at The Mill and couldn’t believe what we stumbled across – a cool street food area, complete with a great office space. I doubt we would have found this place otherwise – it’s tucked away at the very end of the main street in Bowral.

If you’re looking for co-working spaces in Bowral, or you simply need to catch up with some work whilst you’re in Southern Highlands, just pull up a seat at The Mill in the food court area. You can organise a seat in the co-working space offices as well if needed.

There’s a BYO section in the food court, so you can bring your own drinks and have a cheap lunch or dinner here. It’s only open for dinner on Friday nights FYI.

Choose between the Veggie Nook, Ms Pho, Sweet Retreat Gelato, Cellar Door Sales Little Wine Bar and Black Sheep Smoked Meats. Steve had the pho from Ms Pho and I went for the Veggie Nook and had gnocchi. Whilst I was ordering the owners at Veggie Nook basically told me to order the fried green tomatoes, so I did. Even though it’s definitely not something I would ever order, Steve and I were both blown away by it. The Veggie Nook is fantastic street food.

If street food isn’t your thing, head to The Mill Cafe inside the complex. It looks like a great cafe, and somewhere we would personally go if we had more time.

Address: The Mill , 210-224 Bong Bong St, Bowral NSW 2576

2. The Press Shop For Breakfast

the-press-shop-bowral-restaurants

The last time I came to Bowral, I remember thinking how beautiful The Press Shop looked, but felt that it may have been a bit too expensive. This time round, I made sure we made a beeline to it for breakfast. Truth is, although it is simply gorgeous from the outside, as soon as you walk in, you’ll realise there’s no reason to feel intimidated at all. The staff are excellent and make you feel welcomed, and I knew there was nothing to worry about.

I ordered the mushrooms on toast which is excellent and Steve ordered the pancakes. He said they are the best pancakes he’s ever eaten!

Address: The Press Shop , 5/391-397 Bong Bong St, Bowral NSW 2576

3. Harrys On Green Lane A For Special Lunch Or Dinner

harrys-on-green-lane-bowral

Harry’s On Green Lane is probably one of Bowral’s most famous restaurants. This absolutely stunning restaurant is so beautiful, you’d be mad not to dine here. They have specific seating times at lunch and dinner so make sure you book beforehand. You’ll have to order the set menu for dinner, and at least one course for lunch. Understandably it’s not cheap though. We booked ourselves in for lunch but we were so full from breakfast, we had to cancel. I totally regret that now. Next time, we’ll 100% make sure we eat here.

Address: Harrys On Green Lane , 15-17 Banyette St, Bowral NSW 2576

4. Plantation Cafe For Breakfast Or Lunch

the-plantation-cafe-bowral

Next door to Harrys On Green Lane is Plantation Cafe. This is such a gorgeous cafe, I will totally eat breakfast here next time we come to Bowral. The menu is actually very reasonably priced too! I love the selection of teas behind the counter and the gifts you can buy too. Plus! They sell Hunter Candles which we just love after we met the owner in their shop in St Peters.

Address: Plantation Cafe, Next to Dirty Janes, 21 Banyette St, Bowral NSW 2576

5. Girls & Boys For Pastries

Girls-and-boys-bowral

We loved Girls & Boys Cafe in Bowral for their outdoor seating area which totally made us feel like we could have been in somewhere in Europe. The pastries look amazing too!

Address: Girls & Boys, 310 Bong Bong St, Bowral NSW 2576

6. Vudu Food Bar For Healthy Takeaway Food

vudu-bar-bowral

If you’re looking for a cheap breakfast in Bowral or takeaway, go to Vudu Food Bar and pick up an acai bowl or a healthy sandwich and take it to Corbett Gardens (mentioned in this article) to escape the crowds.

Address: Vudu Food Bar , Shop 19/310-312 Bong Bong St, Bowral NSW 2576

7. Gumnut Pattiserie For Croissants

gumnut-patisserie-bowral

Gumnut Patisserie is a fantastic patisserie serving up some of the best cakes and bakery style food in Bowral. Every time we go past here, we’re always in awe of how amazing the food looks.

Address: Gumnut Patisserie , Shop 7, Grand Arcade, Bong Bong St, Bowral NSW 2576

8. High Tea At Dirty Janes

dirty-janes-high-tea

When you wonder into Dirty Janes Antique Shop, you might not even notice there’s a tea rooms near to the counter at the very back of the shop. Inside, it’s actually really cool, much better than our photo shows it above. This is a fun kitsch way to make yourself feel like you’re back in England again! Simply order scones and some cucumber sandwiches and you’ll feel right at home!

Address: Dirty Jane’s Tea Salon , 13 Banyette St, Bowral NSW 2576

9. Discover Berkelouw Book Barn

Berkelouw-book-barn-berrima

Berkelouw Book Barn in Berrima is high on our list to visit, but unfortunately we ran out of time during our recent visit to Southern Highlands. This gorgeous bookstore and cafe is one of a kind, is also popular with weddings. In fact, when we attempted to visit, a wedding was taking place – but we arrived too late in the day, just after 5pm (it’s open between 8am – 5pm).

Although it’s not in Bowral, this unique cafe is somewhere I would personally want to visit when going on a day trip to Bowral from Sydney. It’s under a 10 minute drive to Berkelouw Book Barn from Bowral.

Address: Berkelouw Book Barn , Bendooley Estate, 3020 Old Hume Highway, Berrima, NSW 2577

10. Go For A Drink At The Surveyer General Inn in Berrima

berrima-southern-highlands

After you’ve been to Berkelouw Book Barn, drive down the road to and have a drink at The Surveyor General Inn. We just loved going for a drink at The Surveyor General Inn in Berrima at sunset. The light, air and atmosphere of the pub reminded us so much of England. Plus! They serve up a decent wine and beer here too! It’s a must visit on a day trip to Bowral!

Address: The Surveyor General Inn, 26 Old Hume Hwy, Berrima NSW 2577

12. The Green Lane

the-green-lane-bowral

So we’ve already talked about Harrys On Green Lane and Plantation Cafe, which are both located at The Green Lane. If I could compare it to anywhere, The Green Lane feels a bit like The Grounds Of Alexandria, but with more of a plant vibe with gorgeous shops and cafes under one roof.

Below are some of the other shops in The Green Lane to check out.

13. Dirty Janes Antique Shop

dirty-janes-bowral

As plant lovers, we loved The Orangery & Potting Shed. The space itself is so beautiful, you could spend all day here checking out the plants for sale.

15. Lancelot Hill

lancelot-hill-bowral

I love Lancelot Hill, maybe because I grew up in a Tudor house but, I’ve never seen anything else quite like it in Australia before. Tudor-style buildings have been built inside this antique shop, and it’s something so cool to go and check out, you’ll feel properly like you’re back in England in no time!

Address: Lancelot Hill , 379-385 Bong Bong Street, Bowral NSW 2576

17. Corbett Gardens

Order a takeaway and have a picnic in the sunshine. This is also the main centra of the famous Tulip Time festival which we will talk more about in this article.

Address: Corbett Gardens, Wingecarribee St, Bowral NSW 2576

Address: Retford Park , 1325 Old South Road, Bowral

21. Discover The Beautiful Red Cow Farm in Moss Vale

red-cow-farm-moss-vale-sydney

Although Red Cow Farm is located in the nearby town of Moss Vale, we’re including it on this list because it blew us away. I randomly found this beautiful garden after researching gardens in the area for another article. There wasn’t much written about it, but I knew it would be a hidden gem – and what do you know? The gardens are hidden behind a gorgeous English county style cottage. They are expansive with sculptures placed throughout. The real gem is the turquoise pond in the middle of the gardens. We loved it!

It costs $15 pp to gain access to the gardens. We found out the hard way and went in the wrong entrance, only to be greeted by a not so friendly man. Access to the cottage is by the main road.

Address: Red Cow Farm, 7480 Illawarra Hwy, Sutton Forest NSW 2577

22. Tulip Time Festival

tulip-time-bowral

Tulip Time Festival is one of the oldest flower festivals in Australia, which attracts thousands of visitors. Corbett Gardens is the focal point of the festival which comes alive in from mid September – beginning of October.

Find out more about Tulip Time Festival here.

23. Drive from Bowral to Kangaroo Valley

weekend-getaways-from-sydney-kangaroo-valley

When we got up early in the morning after our stay in Bowral, we drove to Kangaroo Valley via Fitzroy Falls. The drive between the falls and Kangaroo Valley is breathtaking. It winds down the hill and to our surprise we were above the clouds. It was so amazing, we pulled over on the side of the road and flew our drone up to capture the incredible sight. Regardless of the clouds, it’s a beautiful drive and a highlight of our trip.

Address: Moss Vale Road

24. Weekend Meditation Retreat At Sunnatarum Forest Monastary

MEDITATION-RETREAT-IN-SYDNEY-SUNNATARAM-FOREST-MONASTERY

Although Sunnatarum Forest Monastary isn’t technically in Bowral and in the neighbouring town of Bundanoon, it’s worth mentioning in this article because it’s such a special place. We’ve been three times now, and if we lived nearby, we would come here all the time.

Run by volunteers and Thai Monks, they hold weekend meditation retreats near Sydney so you can unwind and clear your head. Or if dedicating a whole weekend isn’t an option right now, pop by for a guided meditation and teaching from 10-11am on Sundays, followed by lunch.

If you’ve never meditated before, this is the perfect place to come. Rather than just meditating for hours on end (like at a Vipassana I did in Blue Mountains ), your time is split up between walking and sitting meditation, tai chi overlooking Kangaroo Valley (and out to Jervis Bay on a good day) and teaching sessions.

Every time I’ve been to this meditation retreat in Bundanoon, I come away feeling like I’ve been away for ages (in a good way), and I feel like a much better version of myself. I’m calmer, have a much clearer head, and I’m reminded to act differently in some situations I may have done so before.

I worked with a lady when I first came to Sydney who was in her 60s at the time, and I told her about Sunnatarum. She went to there one weekend having never meditation, and came back thanking me because she got so much out of it.

Address: Sunnatarum Forest Monastery , 225 Teudts Rd, Bundanoon NSW 2578

25. Harpers Mansion Maze In Berrima

harpers-mansion-maze

A visit to the countryside wouldn’t be complete without a trip to a maze! Harper’s Mansion in Berrima is the perfect day out for families in Southern Highlands. With two acres of gardens to walk around, have fun at one of the largest hedge mazes in Australia!

The maze is only open on weekends and there’s a small entrance fee to get in. We planned to go and visit as we both love a good maze, but we ran out of time unfortunately.

Address: Harper’s Mansion , 9 Wilkinson Street, Berrima, NSW 2577

26. Box Vale Walking Track

box-vale-walking-track

The Box Vale Walking Track in Mittagong is a fantastic hike for those looking to get right into the middle of the countryside. There are a couple of options with his hike you can consider.

  • Hike to Natti Gorge Lookout (1h10m total walking time // 5km)
  • Hike to 40 Foot Falls (4hr – 5hr total walking time // 12.5km)

If you opt to continue onto 40 Foot Falls, it gets harder along the way and steeper. You’ll need to wear decent hiking boots for this hike! You can bring dogs as it’s technically not in a National Park! Look forward to the tunnel on the Natti Gorge Lookout hike – it’s one for the kids! You can check out our guide for our 7 Tips For The Box Vale Walking Track below.

Many people visit Bowral during the spring and autumn.

Some of the most popular Cellar Doors include Bendooley Estate – with wine tasting overlooking the vineyard, and the stunning Joadja Estate – which is the oldest vineyard in the Southern Highlands.

If you don’t feel like driving, the perfect option is to do a wine tour. Local resident Peter will pick you up and take you to some of the best cellar doors as well as some hidden gems!

Going on a wine-tasting tour is a great way to support local businesses in the area, plus the vineyards are stunning, so go on – it’s a great activity to do especially if you’ll be visiting with friends!

5. Visit the Cherry Tree Walk War Memorial In Settlers Park

In the north of Bowral town centre you’ll find the picturesque Cherry Tree Walk, created in memory of all the soldiers that lost their lives in the Vietnam War.

The Cherry Tree Walk has one tree for each soldier that never made it back home to Australia. There are 526 Japanese Cherry Blossom trees in total, and as you walk down the path you are surrounded by the cherry trees on either side.

It’s an absolutely beautiful war memorial, and is incredibly moving to see a War Memorial that isn’t manmade but rather made of something living.

The walk between the cherry trees is over a kilometre, it’s a lovely walk and the walk really draws significance to just how many soldiers lost their lives.

The cherry blossoms are in bloom during the spring (late September and early October), and this is when the cherry trees look the most beautiful. The walk starts from just behind Bowral Swimming Pool at Rivelut Park.

6. Relax At Corbett Gardens

Corbett Gardens is a great place to visit in Bowral when the weather is good.

Corbett Gardens is full of beautiful colourful flowers year-round, but from mid-September until the beginning of October, Corbett Gardens hosts the Tulip Time Festival – with 75,000 tulips in full bloom that attracts thousands of visitors to Bowral!

Corbett Gardens is a great place to escape the crowds and have a picnic when Bowral gets busy with tourists on the weekends!

7. Visit the Bradman Museum Of Cricket

Bowral is famous for being the home of the greatest cricket player of all time – the late Sir Donald Bradman. The Bradman Museum is a must-visit in Bowral for anyone who is a cricket fan!

You’ll get to see where Don’s career began at the commemorative museum and the heritage-listed Bradman Oval – where he played many of his earliest cricket games.

The Oval now encompasses the International Cricket Hall of Fame, as well as exhibits dedicated to Don Bradman’s origins in Bowral.

To give you an idea of how great a sportsman he was, Don Bradman had a test batting average of 99.94, which is double that of anyone else who has played cricket!

Entry to the Bradman Museum is $25 for adults.

8. Walk the Bradman Trail

A free self-guided walk you can do in Bowral is The Bradman Tail! The tail starts and finishes at The Bradman Museum – where you can pick up a free map, and along the 1.7km walk you’ll see many of the sites linked to Don Bradman.

There’s around 10 sights that are all well-signposted and the walk should take around 45 minutes.

Some of the stops include Bradman’s childhood school and the two homes he grew up in.

9. Mary Poppins Statue

Bowral is actually the inspiration behind the Mary Poppins character!

Pamela L Travers – the author of the book, lived here in her teenage years, and you’ll find the Mary Poppins birthplace statue behind the Bradman Museum at Glebe Park.

10. Retford Park Gardens

Open from Thursdays until Sundays each week, the gorgeous Italianate-style residence Retford Park has stunning gardens that are definitely worth exploring!

The heritage house was built in 1887 and has great historical significance, plus you can go inside and do house tours on Saturdays and Sundays.

Feel free to bring a picnic and relax in the gardens. Entrance fee is $15 for adults(free for National Trust members)

11. Bowral Lookout

In the north of Bowral, halfway between Bowral and Mittagong – located off Oxley Drive on the Mount Gibraltar Reserve is Bowral Lookout. Here you can get some fantastic views over Bowral.

There’s parking right at the lookout, as well as public toilets if you need them.

12. Watch The Sunset At Jellore Lookout Or Mittagong Lookout

Just a 2 minute drive from Bowral Lookout will take you to Jellore Lookout and adjacent Mittagong Lookout – the best places in Bowral to watch the sunset!

Located at a former quarry, the views are lovely. This is the highest point between Sydney and Canberra at 863 metres above sea level, and offers stunning views out across the Southern Highlands.

On a clear day you can even see as far as the Blue Mountains and Sydney!!

  13. Enjoy the many restaurants and cafes in Bowral!

Despite being a little country town, Bowral is full of great places to eat.

During the day check out the famous high tea at Dirty Janes, as well as the stunning trendy cafes The Press Shop and the plant-filled Plantation Cafe, or The Mill for cool street food (and a great co-working space!).

There are so many options for food in Bowral!

And in the evening, The Bowral Asian, Biota Dining and Onesta Cucina are particularly popular.

Waterfalls Near Bowral

There aren’t any waterfalls in Bowral but there are many nearby, the most famous ones being Carrington Falls, Belmore Falls and Fitzroy Falls. Fitzroy Falls is the closest waterfall to Bowral and is my personal favourite!

All the waterfalls are fairly close to each other so you can visit them all in one go if you wish!

14. Check Out Belmore Falls

Just 35 minutes drive from Bowral is Belmore Falls. Belmore Falls is a double-drop waterfall and is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in NSW – it is truly very impressive!

What’s great about Belmore Falls is that, unlike many of the other waterfalls around Sydney that can often dry up if it hasn’t rained for a while, Belmore Falls always seems to have a consistent powerful flow of water.

In addition, there are several viewpoints from which you can enjoy the falls so you can get lots of great photos!

15. Visit Carrington Falls

The stunning 90ft Carrington Falls is another popular waterfall located 30 minutes from Bowral. If you visit it after Belmore Falls it’s just a 20-minute drive.

16. Head to Nellies Glen For Some Wild Swimming

Just opposite Carrington Falls is Nellies Glen. At Nellies Glen you can swim under a waterfall! Nellies Glen is set in a stunning location, although the water is very cold so you might have to wait until a hot day to get in!

17. Enjoy The Stunning Fitzroy Falls

Just a 25 minute drive from Bowral is Fitzroy Falls, the closest of the major waterfalls in the Southern Highlands to Bowral.

Fitzroy Falls is simply fantastic – one of the best waterfalls in the whole of Australia, and is a must-visit when in the area. The waterfall is so dramatic and powerful, with the water plunging down 80 metres into the valley below.

The viewpoints offer stunning views, and are really easy to get to – with the main viewing platform (the Fitzroy Falls Lookout) being just 150 meters from the car park.

From this viewpoint you’re at the top of the falls so it’s a really unique viewpoint, if not a bit daunting looking down over the edge of the railing!

The second viewing platform is actually my favourite as you see the falls head-on in all their beauty. Head along the West Rim Trail to the Jersey Trail which is less than a kilometre from the Fitzroy Falls Lookout.

Fitzroy Falls waterfall walk nsw

Parking at Fitzroy Falls is $4 (unless you have an NSW Parks Pass and then it’s free).

18. Look Out For Glow Worms At Fitzroy Falls!

There’s also a secret glow worm colony at one lookout at Fitzroy Falls known as The Grotto!

Viewing is best in the summer months of December to February as there are more glow worms at this time of year, and it’s incredible to see all the lights illuminating inside the cave on the overhang of the waterfall!

The walk is 650 metres from the car park, and definitely bring a torch as the steps can be slippery.   Remember to turn your torch off to be able to see the glow worms inside the cave!

19. Walk The Big Hill Cutting On An Abandoned Railway Line

Enjoy a 350m walk along an old railway line to get to the tall cliffs of Big Hill Cutting.   This is one of the deepest cuttings in Australia, and it is so impressive.

Bill Hill Cutting was made using just dynamite and hand tools and is very easy to get to. Just park at the start of Coates Road where you see the old railway line.

20. Enjoy The Beautiful Garden at Red Cow Farm

Red Cow Farm Garden is an absolutely beautiful place that you should really visit!

Set behind a quaint county cottage, Red Cow Farm Garden has a stunning turquoise lake in the middle of the gardens, with beautiful flowers and trees where you can stroll around.

Autumn is a lovely time to visit when the tees turn fantastic shades of red and orange.

Entry to the gardens is $15 for adults and the gardens are open 7 days a week between late September and late May.

21. Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens

Located just outside of Bowral and sprawling across 15 hectares, the Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens is a lovely place to visit, especially if you have children.

Get lost in the Meadow Labyrinth, visit the bird-filled Winter Garden, or track down the 15 teddy bears hiding amongst the foliage.

Things To Do In Bowral When It’s Raining Or During The Evening:

22. visit the highlands entertainment centre  .

If it’s raining in Bowral, head to The Highlands Entertainment Centre where you’ll find an 18-hole miniature golf course, 10 ten-pin bowling lanes, and plenty of arcade games!

23. Watch a movie at the Empire Cinema

The 1915 Empire Cinema is one of Australia’s oldest regional cinemas, as well as being one of regional Australia’s best independent cinemas.

With 4 screens, it showcases all the latest movies, as well as shows from London’s National Theatre and New York City’s Met Opera, so there’s something to suit everyone!

Other Places To Check Out In The Southern Highlands

While Bowral is the main Southern Highlands hub, it’s also so close to a handful of other charming towns that are definitely worth exploring when you are in the area.

A 10 minutes drive can take you to Berrima, Moss Vale or Mittagong, all of which have a unique special character and attractions.

24. Moss Vale

Moss Vale, 10 minutes drive south of Bowral, is a lovely quaint town set amongst the countryside and vineyards.

Stroll around the town and soak up the heritage and landmarks of the town. Enjoy the wetlands known as Cecil Hoskins Nature Reserve, as well as the flowers at Leighton Gardens.

And if you’re keen on golfing, Moss Vale has one of NSW’s most picturesque golf courses!

25. Mittagong

A 10 minute drive north of Bowral takes you to the historic town of Mittagong, full of antique stores and cafes in beautiful colonial sandstone cottages.

26. Box Vale Walking Track Near Mittagong

Just outside of Mittagong is the Box Vale Walking Tack – a beautiful and easy flat 5 km countryside walking trail that takes you to the Nattai Gorge Lookout.

It follows the old railway line and takes you in between cliffs, as well as through stunning fern valleys and forest. There is also the impressive 80 mete Box Vale Track tunnel here which is cool!

27. Sixty Foot Falls Near Mittagong

Whilst not as big or powerful as the other waterfalls, Sixty Foot Falls is a lovely local spot that’s never crowded. You can go for a swim in the pool opposite the falls, or just pop your feet in!

28. Berrima

Berrima is a gorgeous historic village 10 minutes drive west of Bowral that totally makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time!

Set on the banks of the Wingecarribee River, this is honestly one of NSW’s most picturesque villages, with so many quaint cottages and historical buildings that you can’t stop looking at!

Berrima is home to one of Australia’s oldest pubs – Surveyor General Inn which was built by convicts (and is great for a sunset drink!), as well as the stunning Regency-style Berrima Courthouse, built in the 1830s.

29. Harpers Mansion Maze In Berrima

Harper’s Mansion has a National Trust listed maze that is one of the largest hedge mazes in Australia! The maze is only open on the weekends but kids will love this one, it’s like being in the English countryside!

30. Look For Wild Platypus!

If you’ve ever wanted to see the elusive wild platypus, then Berrima is the best place in the Southern Highlands to go!

Park   on Argyle Street   and follow the sign for the Stone Quarry Walk along the Wingecarribee River. The walk along the river will take a few minutes, and then you’ll reach a rocky platform.

Sit on this platform, which offers a great elevated view so you’ll be able to look out for the platypus easily. Platypus are more active around dawn and dusk so go around this time.

Remember to be quiet as platypus hate noise and dive down if disturbed!

Dirty Janes has opened a third location in one of Australia’s most travelled-to country towns

F acebook Marketplace is great, but nothing quite compares to perusing a vintage store in real-time. Running your hands along an antique sofa, finding the perfect curio to fill the blank space on your side table, or selecting an artwork you know you won’t find anywhere else; it’s the thrill-of-the-hunt that simply can’t be replicated by its online equivalents.

Dirty Janes has become a country town icon, a mecca for seekers of pre-loved furniture, homewares, clothing, jewellery, art books, and records. A beacon for travellers to Bowral, and later Canberra, the marketplace is the joint creation of Jane Crowley and her father, antiques dealer Athol Salter . And now, it’s opening a third location in what is likely one of Australia’s most visited country towns: Orange, New South Wales.

“I’ve been eyeing off Orange for a few years,” says Jane. “There is a real buzz to the town; the people, the food scene, the visitor economy. It’s a city with a fabulous artistic scene. It’s also a hub where people will travel for the weekend.”

Dirty Janes Orange location will operate in the same format loved and lauded at its Bowral and Canberra locations, featuring over 65 stalls manned by independent small businesses. Also on-site will be a cafe serving simple but delicious country-style food made from local ingredients; Salters, named after Jane’s father.

“We have vintage dealers who sell furniture, artwork, LPs, china, gardenware. We have artisans who make sculptures, artworks, and hats,” says Jane. The store is situated in the former PCYC building that has been renovated to suit — bar the old scoreboard on the wall and basketball markings kept for their character.

And, there’s more to come. “We’re then going to tackle the upstairs rooms in about 12 months, creating room for more stallholders and a space for workshops.”

Dirty Janes Orange is open 7 days a week from 10am until 5pm, and can be found at 98 Byng Street, Orange.

Inside Jane Crowley’s Bowral home

It should come as little surprise that the brand’s namesake lays her head to rest in a home full of spectacular vintage finds with spades of history and familial stories. “…we’ve got some beautiful family pieces that aren’t necessarily flash, but they’ve got so many memories,” she told Country Style.

It was Jane’s handiwork and penchant for upcycling that brought back the c1920s home in Bowral from its garish 70s state. “It’s great because for the kids, it’s just a way of life. You don’t go to a shop and buy something new, you go to an op shop or you go to a garage sale – and you never know what you’ll find.”

Sydney weather: Cold fronts, heavy rain, flash flooding looms as NSW braces for wild week

Parts of NSW are bracing for heavy rain, flooding and cool temperatures as wild weather is forecast to batter the state.

Don't miss out on the headlines from NSW. Followed categories will be added to My News.

Parts of NSW are bracing for heavy rain, flooding and cool temperatures as wild weather is forecast to batter the state.

The pleasant extended summer conditions will come to an end as experts warn chaotic autumn weather is on the way as a weak cold front and low-pressure trough sweeps across the east coast on Tuesday.

Up to 15mm of rain is expected to fall on Tuesday and Wednesday, but much more is forecast to come through later in the week.

“From Wednesday, a large and slow-moving high-pressure ridge will become established over the Tasman Sea, causing a steady flow of rain-bearing easterly winds to become established over eastern Australia for the rest of the week,” reported website Weatherzone.

“Weather patterns like this can cause several hundred millimetres of rain along the NSW coast and adjacent ranges, particularly when low-pressure systems or troughs form near the coast.”

The weather is expected to intensify for the second half of the week and weekend when the feed of moisture clashes with an upper-level cut-off low-pressure system, causing widespread rain over the state.

Approximately 20 and 35mm of rain will fall in Sydney on Thursday and Friday.

NSW is set for a drenching. Picture: Weatherzone

The weekend will see the heaviest falls with up to 100mm of rain falling across Saturday and Sunday.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued strong wind warnings for the Sydney Enclosed Waters, Hunter Coast, Sydney Coast, Illawarra Coast, Batemans Coast and Eden Coast.

The warnings are also in place for Wednesday for the Byron and Coffs Coast.

Between Friday and Monday, up to 155mm of rain may fall across the harbour city.
