Cotswolds Private Tour From London

Cotswolds private tour from London

The beauty of a Cotswolds private tour from London is the freedom and flexibility that it gives you on the day.  This tour has a set itinerary where we have a recommended route. Here we have combined idyllic villages with the more famous Cotswold towns. This gives you a wonderful overview and experience of what the Cotswolds is all about. As it is a private tour we are totally flexible as to how long you would like in each place. We are also very flexible and are more than happy to modify the itinerary on the day if you would like.

Places we visit on the Cotswolds private tour from London?

  • Stow-on-the-Wold
  • The Slaughters
  • Bourton-on-the-Water
  • Minster Lovell

Paint me a picture:

Departing from your hotel in London at 9am, you’ll start the day by visiting the fascinating village of Great Tew. A fairy-tale village of thatched cottages and beautiful landscapes that is away from the tourists. The home of several famous characters and the future home of royalty.

From Great Tew we then continue on to Stow-on-the-Wold, the highest town in the Cotswolds. Here you’ll have time to browse among honey-coloured buildings, cosy pubs, narrow streets, interesting shops and tiny tea rooms.

Our next stop is the picturesque village of Lower Slaughter, one of the prettiest villages in the Northern Cotswolds and set in the most amazing countryside.

Our next stop is arguably the most famous Cotswolds town and regularly voted one of the prettiest villages in England; Bourton-on-the-Water. Known as the ‘Venice of the Cotswolds’ there is plenty to see and do with a wealth of attractions, shops, restaurants and tea rooms. Here you have free time to explore and enjoy some lunch.

From here we go through some enchanting Cotswold villages to the town of Burford, often called the ‘Gateway to the Cotswolds’. A very iconic town and home to one of the most beautiful and ancient churches in the region. Stories aplenty!

Then we spend the afternoon travelling along the stunning Windrush Valley visiting a highlight of tour, the beautiful village and ancient ruins of Minster Lovell. This pretty village on the River Windrush boasts plenty of Cotswold stone and thatched roofs, as well as holding the title of being the region’s most haunted village. Minster Lovell is perhaps best known for the ruins of its 15th century hall, owned by generations of the Lovell family.

Departure will be late afternoon returning to London around 6pm.

Cotswold Village

This is our suggested itinerary for a Cotswolds private tour from London. We begin with a visit to Burford, known as the “Gateway to the Cotswolds”. This pretty medieval town features a medieval bridge, old stone houses and attractive Tudor and Georgian frontages. We will walk along the sweeping high street with lots of antique shops and tea rooms.

We continue our drive into the English countryside, along twisty roads and passing farmland and rolling green hills. We arrive in Bibury, described by William Morris as “the most beautiful village in England”, with picture-postcard houses dotting the landscape. We can stop for lunch in one of the many traditional pubs in the area.

We’ll begin the afternoon with a visit to Bourton-on-the-Water, nicknamed “Venice of the Cotswolds”. See the bridges that cross the stream that runs through the centre of the town. On either side, you’ll find antique shops, cafes and restaurants. And just a short drive away lies Stow-on-the-Wold, a market town that was once a centre for the wool industry. As you walk around, you’ll notice lots of honey-coloured stone buildings and interesting independent shops. From here, we return to London.

Private tour from London to see Cotswolds

Private, personalised high quality tours from a car tour to a full size touring coach

At the London Toolkit we are very close to a lot of private tour providers from one man bands specialising in a niche subject to the large day tour operators featured elsewhere on this web site aimed at the generalist tourist.

We do not directly provide a custom tour, our role is to listen to your needs, discuss a realistic itinerary and then put you in touch with an appropriate provider for your need.

Vehicles, driver/guides + scope of private tours

Private car hire with driver to the Cotswolds

A range of touring vehicles with capacities ranging from 1 to 60 seats are available. We charge a flat fee per vehicle (not person) for the day.

This includes the vehicle and services of the driver guide or guide. You have the option of just having a driver with no professional guiding provided which will save you some money.

Admissions to attractions are not included in the core fee, but can be arranged.

You can design your own day and just present us with an itinerary specification if you wish.

Just enter your requirement on our our private tour request form .

On this page we outline one of the most popular tour itineraries people request.

On the menu to the right are links to some other very popular private tour ideas.

Example private tour template: The Cotswolds

Bed and breakfast hotels near Victoria rail station in London

The Cotswolds is a range of hills in west-of London, an area 25 miles (40 km) across and 90 miles (145 km) long. The area is characterised by attractive small towns and villages built of the underlying Cotswold stone (a type of limestone).

On the borders of the Cotswolds are the university city of Oxford , Shakespeare's Stratford Upon Avon and Warwick Castle . Combining any of these four makes a fascinating day of contrasts.

As with all our example custom tours, this is just an idea to build upon. The great thing about a custom tour is that you choose when you want to go and how long you spend at each destination.

The Cotswolds covers quite an area, north to south not far off 100 miles.

We meander down country lanes, through villages of honey coloured stone, stopping in Burford and Bourton-on-the-Water and also visiting the charming twins of Upper and Lower Slaughter is recommended.

A stop for a leisurely lunch or cream tea can be made or you can even stretch your legs and ramble between Upper and Lower Slaughter and reward yourself with a cream tea or pint at the end.

Typical tour schedules

Many people choose to combine their private Cotswolds tour with a trip to nearby Oxford , Warwick Castle , Blenheim Palace or Stratford Upon Avon . These attractions are all very reachable from London and make for a fantastic day our while touring through the scenic Cotswolds.

Central Cotswold medieval market town and villages

Cotswolds Burford

After leaving London behind we take the old coach road to Bath, through Hungerford, Marlborough, along the Kennet valley and through the Savernake Forest.

Burford, an old wool town, is our gateway town into the Cotswolds. One of the larger conurbations, the main High Street descending down to the river with some of its best 17th and 18th century frontages is the main focus for visitors. Burford is a renowned centre for antiques, teashops and gift shopping.

Bourton On The Water

Probably the most popular village in the Cotswolds, and often referred to as the "Venice of the Cotswolds" because the River Windrush runs right through the centre. The sparkling water and the attractive low bridges crossing it create a charming scene.

The Slaughters

Only a couple of miles from Bourton On Water, Lower Slaughter is just off the Roman Fosse Way and a wonderfully conserved typical Cotswold village, with a Water Mill and ducks on the stream - a wander alongside the stream seems like a privilege.

Upper Slaughter is equally attractive with old cottages and farmhouses, and a Manor House now a hotel.

Overlooking the River Coln that was once described as the most beautiful village in England by William Morris.

The 14th century Arlington Row provides the focal point. This was originally a wool store, then altered into weavers cottages and is now restored by the National Trust. The low roof line and row of gables give it true Cotswold style.

Most popular sightseeing combinations within the Cotswolds region

Anne Hathaway's Cottage Stratford Upon Avon

Stratford upon Avon

On arriving in Stratford we do a short orientation tour of Stratford on the bus before alighting at Shakespeare's Birthplace. The 'must see' in in the middle of town.

On the far side of the town centre is Holy Trinity Church where Shakespeare is buried.

The town itself is also a nice place to loiter with some olde worlde charm and a very nice riverside with extensive parkland and always something going on.

A mile or two from the town centre is Anne Hathaway's Cottage and further out is Shakespeare's mother's house, Mary Arden. The bus is needed to see these.

Stratford Upon Avon what to expect

Warwick Castle

Just 20-30 minutes from Stratford is Warwick Castle, one of England's best

preserved castles.

Warwick Castle is run by the people who run Madame Tussauds in London and there is an accent on entertainment with plenty of events put on and things to do.

You can spend time climbing the castle towers, walking through the gardens, visiting the exhibitions and watching special outdoor events. These events may include jousting, archery or falconry.

Warwick Castle what to expect

The colleges in Oxford date back to the 13th century and among its famous students were Bill Clinton, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien and Lewis Carroll.

There is only one way of seeing Oxford and that’s to walk. Unfortunately our bus cannot park in Oxford city centre so the driver/guide cannot accompany you. The city is very compact though and we will supply a map or arrange in advance a guide to meet you.

Christ Church is the single most visited college, especially since it was used extensively in the Harry Potter movies.

Driver & guiding options

Everybody's requirements are different! - You may just need a professional driver to transport your group to where you want to go or you may need a level of guiding and commentary.

Driver only - If you prefer an experienced driver who is familiar with our touring routes but does not offer tour guiding, please select “Driver only” as your tariff.

Driver/guide - If you would like an experienced driver who can also guide from the vehicle, please select “Driver/guide” as your tariff.

Driver with additional guide - For larger groups a separate guide may be appropriate. Particularly at some of the large cities and towns where parking is a problem in the centre.

Touring coaches for large groups - Full size coaches that can accommodate the largest groups in comfort are also available with guides. By their nature these tours are very different from each other so just outline your requirements on the enquiry form at the bottom of the page to start a dialogue.

A day tour is a tour of around 9-10 hours at a time of your choosing. Drivers have very strict legal limits on the time they are allowed to drive each day and there are rules also on the frequency of driver breaks too. These are not normally an issue, but if they are the matter will be raised at the quotation stage.

Prices includes all fees except for food/drink and admissions to attractions which can be quoted for separately.

PRIVATE CAR DAY TOUR PRICES

(rates do not include attraction admissions or food), full size touring coaches for large groups.

Premium Tours coach

If you have a large group then that is not a problem either.

The largest coaches are 50-72 seat coaches but we also have access to vehicles half that size.

With large groups on cruise tour transfers the capacity issue is not normally passenger numbers but luggage.

UK coaches are built to European traveller requirements, where one large case is perfectly adequate. A typical 50 seat coach will be able to accommodate around 60 large cases in the luggage hold.

For a group travelling with North American flight allowances a 50 seat coach will typically only be able to accommodate the luggage of 35 such passengers maximum.

With large groups just as small groups, multi- drop and pick-ups from hotels is routine and if required we can arrange a guide.

Tour planning & formal quotations

Some people have a tight specification of exactly what they want, others just have a broad idea of what they like and want to see and let us plan something that meets that need. We are comfortable with either type of request.

Tours are customised for each individual group. Go where you want to go at a pace you decide. Use the form below to outline your requirements and start a dialogue.

Tour London & Beyond

Private Cotswolds Tours

The vision of England as a land of gentle hills, thatched cottages, rose gardens, sheep grazing safely in the fields – this can all be found in the Cotswolds, just 90 minutes drive from London.

Small Cotswold towns and villages provide a warm welcome for the visitor, with antique and craft shops to browse, small museums to enjoy, and everything from vintage car collections to rare breed farms to occupy you. A pub lunch is a treat at the Swan, the Trout at Tadpole Bridge or the Fuzzy Duck, or afternoon tea at Huffkins or Badgers Hall (yes, those are all real names).

The Cotswolds area has some of the finest gardens in England, and historic houses open to the public range from the grandeur of Blenheim Palace to the more intimate atmosphere of Kelmscott Manor, home to the artist/designer William Morris.

Below are just a few of my favourite places to visit; you can mix and match them as you wish, and if you want to get off the beaten track, it’s very easy to do so in the Cotswolds.

These private tours are by car, for up to 6 people, with your own driver-guide. Tour prices range between £750-£880.

Private tours Cotswold Villages

Cotswold Villages

A Cotswold tour to introduce you to the landscape and some of the loveliest villages, including Burford and Bourton on the Water. There’ll be time for browsing the shops, visiting historic churches, a pub lunch, maybe a riverside walk, and if you are a Downton Abbey fan, we could stop at a couple of film locations as well.

Private tour to Cotswolds & Hidcote Manor garden

Hidcote Manor & Kiftsgate Court gardens

Hidcote Manor garden, designed in the early 20th century by Lawrence Johnston, is one of the finest gardens in England – my favourite. Just down the hill, the garden at Kiftsgate Court was created by three generations of women and is the perfect partner to Hidcote – quite different but every bit as lovely.

Private tour to Cotswolds & Blenheim Palace

Blenheim Palace & the Cotswolds

Blenheim Palace was the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill, and is the home of the Duke of Marlborough. It is surrounded by parkland designed in the 18th century by “Capability” Brown, and by lovely formal gardens, a rose garden and a woodland garden.

We would have time to visit the historic town of Woodstock, and to tour further afield in the Cotswolds.

Private Tour Arts & Crafts Movement in the Cotswolds

Cotswold Arts & Crafts

The Cotswolds was an important centre for the Arts & Crafts Movement over a 100 years ago, and remains home to many designers and crafts-people. Chipping Campden and Broadway have small museums celebrating designers and metalworkers such as C R Ashbee, George Hart, and Robert Welch; the Guild of Handicraft; and furniture-designer Gordon Russell.

Chipping Campden and Broadway are also two of the most beautiful Cotswold towns.

Private tour Cotswolds & Kelmscott Manor

Kelmscott Manor & the Cotswolds

For fans of the 19th century pioneer of the Arts & Crafts Movement, William Morris, after touring some of the smaller Cotswold villages and stopping for a pub lunch, we can visit Morris’s summer home Kelmscott Manor.

Kelmscott Manor is only open in the summer months, and only on Wednesdays and Saturdays,

Private tour Cotswolds & Highclere Castle

Downton Abbey & the Cotswolds

Visit a village on the edge of the Cotswolds where many Downton Abbey scenes were filmed, and have lunch in a pub that appears in the programme, before going on to see Highclere Castle, the house that appears as Downton Abbey in the Tv series.

Highclere Castle has very specific opening dates – check with me or their website.

The Cotswolds is a particularly rich area for garden tours. Below are some photos of just a few possibilities.

Private Guided Tours Cotswolds

Private guided tours Cotswolds

The Cotswolds: an Area of Outstanding Natural beauty that includes some of the most lovely and ‘chocolate box’ countryside in England . Gentle rolling hills and honey coloured limestone villages complete with churches and traditional pubs, beautiful gardens, Regency Spa towns and historic monuments can all be found here.

Which locations to include in a day tour ? You will be spoilt for choice (so why not visit for longer, we can arrange accommodation!). We will tailor your tour: why not include some of the better known attractions but do take in some of the pretty Cotswold villages, such as Upper and Lower Slaughter, Stow on the Wold or Bourton on the Water, and of course, a pub lunch.

Bourton on the Water

A truly picturesque village on the river Windrush, with traditional stone Costwolds buildings and village green. The village offers many shops, cafes and attractions and is always popular with visitors. Within easy reach of Bourton are several renowned gardens including internationally renowned Hidcote Manor and the cottage gardens and lavender fields at Snowshill Manor.

Blenheim Palace

Blenheim Palace in Woodstock, Oxfordshire is the home of the Duke of Marlborough, birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill and a World Heritage Site. Set in 2000 acres of lovely scenery, this Baroque palace offers imposing architecture and exquisite interiors, artworks and exhibitions.

Cheltenham is a large spa town with Regency architecture, including Lansdown Terrace, and several notable museums and galleries.

Lacock village dates from the 13th Century, with stone and half timbered houses. Managed by the National Trust it has featured in many film and tv programmes, including a Harry Potter film and the BBC drama Lark Rise to Candleford. Lacock Abbey is a fine country house, and the Fox-Talbot Museum is a must if you are into history of photography.

Your Cotswolds tour will be in a luxury air-conditioned vehicle, conducted by an experienced driver guide. We can pick you up from your hotel, the airport or cruise terminal, from central London or other locations, so all you have to do is sit back, relax and enjoy your own private tour!
