45 Years Ago: Queen Celebrate Japan With ‘Teo Torriatte’

Queen experienced their own version of Beatlemania upon arrival in Japan for 1975's Sheer Heart Attack tour, as they were welcomed at the airport by thousands of fans , many holding signs and flowers.

"We’re completely overwhelmed by what’s happened since we came here," Brian May said at a news conference promoting an eight-date run in the country. "It’s never happened to us in any other country, in this kind of style. We were amazed to see the people at the airport. We just felt very honored and a little bit confused, because we couldn’t go out and see them and talk to them."

It’s safe to say they made up for it: Japan became a special place for Queen, both in touring and in song. The band saluted that union in one of their most underrated moments: A Day at the Races closer "Teo Torriatte (Let Us Cling Together)," released as a Japan-only single on March 25, 1977.

The romantic ballad showcases Queen’s full vocal and instrumental range, but it’s clearly a powerhouse moment for its composer: Along with May's signature electric guitars, orchestrated into a swarm of harmonies, he adds harmonium, backing vocals and the dramatic main chord progression via various keyboards.

" When I’m gone, no need to wonder if I ever think of you ," Freddie Mercury  croons over the carefully sculpted arrangement, ruminating on eternal love. " The same moon shines; the same wind blows / For both of us, and time is but a paper moon / Be not gone ."

But there’s a twist in the choruses, as Mercury shifts into Japanese for a series of lines. By the tune’s choral-styled finale, harmonies swelling to belt, " let us cling together as the years go by ," it feels like a full-on love letter to the nation that always greeted them so warmly.

Listen to Queen's 'Teo Torriatte (Let Us Cling Together)'

"I wrote the song 'Teo Torriatte (Let Us Cling Together)' about this strong bond we as Queen felt with the Japanese people," May said in 2017, according to Queen All the Songs: The Story Behind Every Track . And "Teo Torriatte" continues to provide that link: Queen contributed the song to a 2011 compilation LP, Songs for Japan , issued following the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Tohoku. The tune was also played during opening ceremonies of the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

Fittingly, Queen reserved this track for only special live settings, playing it 17 total times  with Mercury — and only in Japan — during tours in 1979, 1981 and 1982. Memorable versions followed decades later in lineups featuring later singers Paul Rodgers or Adam Lambert , but with May handling lead vocals.

"This song is especially poignant because we have been, [for] so many years, in love with Japan," May said during a 2020 performance in Osaka . "And we still are."

In April 1975, the band embarked on an eight-night tour of Japan – the beginning of a very special relationship with the country and its people.

‘Queen The Greatest’, which celebrates some of Queen’s most memorable songs, performances and achievements this week takes a look at the extraordinary story of ‘Queen In Japan.’ You can watch it in full below.

Queen in Japan: Part 1 - QueenMania (Episode 14)

In the early years, Queen understandably worked hard to make headway in the UK and USA markets. However, there was another country that had already started to take the band to their hearts, signaling the beginning of a deep bond that endures to this very day.

One Saturday In Hammersmith: Dire Straits’ First Live Album ‘Alchemy’

As early as 1974, in Japan, Music Life Magazine had started to feature pictures of the band and report on their albums. The style of music and stage show struck an immediate chord, and so in April 1975, Queen embarked on an eight-night tour of Japan. Their very first concert on Japanese soil would be at the world famous Nippon Budokan in Tokyo, an arena dedicated to martial arts and concerts, and it’s fair to say the band had no idea what was in store for them…

Roger Taylor: “We knew there was sort of demand for us there and so we tagged it on to the end of an American tour. We had a holiday in Hawaii and then it was, sort of, logical, so we went there. We arrived at the airport and suddenly realized it was on a scale different to that which we’d imagined – there were thousands of people there, just to welcome us. Normally you just don’t get that sort of thing anywhere.”

In an exclusive interview, Record Company Exec, Promoter and long-term friend of Queen, Kaz Utsunomiya, recalls that extraordinary arrival…

Kaz Utsunomiya: “I don’t think anyone really guessed that three thousand people would turn up at the airport. Anyone who turned up at the airport would think that this is like, the second coming of the Beatles.”

Kaz explains how the Queen In Japan phenomenon had its beginnings: “In those days the rock group band was mainly supported by the male audience, but then the fact that Music Life (magazine) put in Queen pictures opened up a whole new world with female fans, and caught Japanese fans in both genders, male and female.”

This first encounter marked the beginning of a deep bond between Queen and Japan, with each leaving a lasting impression on the other. So much so, it inspired Brian May to write a song as a special tribute to their Japanese audience with the song “Teo Torriatte”, featured on the band’s 1976 A Day At The Races album containing two choruses sung in Japanese.

Kaz Utsunomiya: “They never expected the band to come up with a song like “Teo Torriatte”, which is mainly for the Japanese market. The band has different songs for all over the world, but I think “Teo Torriatte” you can only listen to them doing that in Japan.”

Queen would regularly tour Japan right up until 1985, but as Kaz explains, the band always embraced a unique approach to where they performed.

Kaz Utsunomiya: “In the early days we toured different cities all over Japan. So we’d go to Sapporo in Hokkaido which is in the northern part of Japan, and we would go to Sendai in southern part and it was really interesting because not that many bands used to tour all round Japan.”

“A lot of international bands come to Japan, they go to Tokyo and Osaka. A lot of people never had the chance of seeing the international bands in the cities outside of Tokyo and Osaka, which they (Queen) did and which made them bigger and a very unique international act in Japan. I think that also helped the band understand the Japanese culture, Japanese history, and the Japanese fans.”

Stunning images & footage of Queen’s first visit to Japan in 1975 & their triumphant return in 1976

Queen would return the very next year to Tokyo in support of their 1976 album A Day at the Races and were photographed hanging out with Sumo wrestlers, drinking sake and greeting a group of fascinated Japanese children who likely had no idea what to make of Freddie Mercury dressed in a multi-colored knit coat sporting long hair and dark sunglasses. The photos are as charming as they are gorgeous to look at. I’ve also included fantastic footage from Queen’s very first press conference in Tokyo (that includes lots of other footage such as their arrival at the airport and the ceremony in front of the Tokyo Tower) as well as a stellar performance of the single from Sheer Heart Attack “Now I’m Here” from the band’s debut show at Budokan that is going to blow your socks off .

At the start of February Queen fly to New York for a 40 show American tour, their first as the headlining act. Unfortunately further shows in late February and April will be cancelled when Freddie develops problems with his throat.

Their first tour of Japan also commences in April, and all four members are visibly overwhelmed to discover over 3,000 screaming fans gathered to welcome them at the airport. The phenomenon is christened ‘Queen Mania’, and will re-occur at every Japanese tour hereafter.

Following rehearsals at Elstree Studios, and also the location of the Bohemian Rhapsody video shoot, the band kick off their third headlining tour of the UK. It begins in familiar Queen territory with two shows at the Liverpool Empire, and concludes on Christmas Eve with the renowned Hammersmith Odeon show, which is also televised and broadcast on radio live on the night. With new costumes, lighting rig and stage effects, the stage show now commences with Freddie's backlit silhouette behind a screen for the opening words to the opera section of the number one single Bohemian Rhapsody , and then bound onto the stage for the rock part of the song. Queen are now Britain's top band, and are just as well known internationally around the world as at home, and above all a top live concert draw.

Queen Explores When, How It Became So Big In Japan

By Andrew Magnotta @AndrewMagnotta

June 25, 2021

As Queen began gaining a foothold at home in the U.K. its star was rising considerably more rapidly on the other side of the globe in Japan.

Music fans in the Land of the Rising Sun began seeing photos of Queen and reading stories about the band in magazines as early as 1974. The band's music and stagecraft immediately resonated in the Far East.

By 1975, Queen booked eight shows in Japan at the end of the U.S. tour, after a vacation in Hawaii. They had no idea what they were getting into when they arrived for the first concert at the world-famous Budokan in Tokyo.

"We arrived at the airport and suddenly realized that it was on a scale different to that which we'd imagined because there were thousands of people there just to welcome us," recalled Roger Taylor . "Normally, you don't get that sort of thing anywhere."

The trip kicked off a decades-long relationship between Queen and Japan and prompted Brian May to write a song "Teo Torriatte (Let Us Cling Together)" in tribute to fans in the country.

Queen made visiting Japan a priority through the rest of the '70s and '80s. Even during the band's hiatus in the '90s, its music remained present in everyday life the country, having been used in TV commercials and dramas.

Concert promoter and longtime friend of Queen Kaz Utsunomiya says the band's early enthusiasm for Japanese culture all but assured its lasting impact in the country.

"A lot of international bands come to Japan, they go to Tokyo and Osaka, right? Rarely have a chance to see the culture outside Tokyo, which this band did from day one," Utsunomiya said. "...That helped the band understand the Japanese culture, Japanese history and sort of like meeting Japanese fans."

Queen explores its relationship with Japan in the latest episodes of its Queen the Greatest YouTube series. Watch them above!

The legendary first visit to Japan realized in 1975, and the return visit to Japan in 1976 with the daimyo “A Night at the Opera”. Introducing a radio album in which the scent of those days spouts from the speakers. Five types of broadcast recordings are included in this work. Compiling “3 types of 1975 + 2 types of 1976”, while playing the song of QUEEN, it features an innocent voice interview of 4 members. The gift title “INTERVIEWS IN JAPAN 1975” was very popular in 1975, but this work is an expansion board with the addition of 1976. Let’s introduce each broadcast.

● Broadcast on April 26, 1975 “Young Kodama” (about 33 minutes) The main feature of this work is to appear next. The request program “Young Kodama” that was broadcast by a certain broadcasting association in the 1970s. It was the predecessor of “Sound Street” along with “Young Jockey”. When QUEEN first visits Japan, a DJ who is familiar with LED ZEPPELIN will act as a personality, and will play songs and interviews with four members. First of all, the DJ talks about the popularity of QUEEN before the members appear, but from here it is already a strong sense of the times. A certain DJ also said, “Anyway, it was extremely popular and I was running because it was popular, but so far …” Even when I went to the hotel for an interview, I was overwhelmed by the crowd of Western music girls, “Mr. Shibuya! I’m having a hard time. Especially interesting is the episode of the Nagoya performance (interview was on April 20th, but it seems that the program was recorded in the studio at a later date). “At the Nagoya performance, there were 30 girls who fainted, and about two pieces of underwear had fallen, and the shoes were scattered anyway, so it seems that it was a big fuss.” The content is amazing, but it’s funny that it’s really specific, like “two pieces of underwear.” And above all, the magnitude of the impact can be seen in the voice of a certain DJ. And an interview with a song in between. Of course, you can understand the contents perfectly because you can have an interpreter. There are many topics that seem to be the first visit to Japan, such as the rush to meet at the airport, but besides that, the mood that is unique to that time overflows from everywhere. For example, “I want to ask vocalist Freddie Mercury,” the DJ grins at the members who say “I like plants and bonzo,” and Brian and Roger listen to music. For Freddie, it’s just a costume, and Roger is harsh on disco music. For those of us who have taken root in the image after that, the fun of the gap gradually comes to us. Also, the crap about Brian’s “Red Special” is fresh. Brian said, “It took about two years to finish it carefully. I think it’s indistinguishable from the guitar I bought,” but at that time, “the same as the guitar I bought” was a compliment. .. It is said from the perspective of “I made it myself, but it’s not shobo!” The last question was “Do you have any ideas for the next album?”, But that “next album” is “A Night at the Opera”. It’s an interview that seems to be overwhelmed by the weight of history just by thinking so.

● April 28, 1975 broadcast “Star Senichiya” (about 10 minutes) The third recorded is the legendary TV program “Star Senichiya”. It’s only audio, but it’s a talk by inviting four people to the station studio. I miss the voice of the late Shinichi Ogishima, but the treatment of “a foreigner popular with young people” is also fresh. From the beginning, “Today, young people in Japan … are said to be the most popular among young rock fans … well, rock, nobleman, nobleman of rock, or the second Beatles. QUEEN I invited all of you tonight. ” There are many classic questions such as favorite foods and impressions of Japanese fans, and I feel like I have an overseas band. Also here, the “Red Special” sword is interesting. When asked “Is insurance 1 million?”, “I wasn’t insured” is returned, but Mr. Ogishima instinctively leaks “It was written in a Japanese magazine …”. It is clear from the tone that Mr. Ogishima himself is not interested in QUEEN, but he is also smiling at the seriousness of studying in advance and attending the interview.

◆ Broadcast on April 10, 1976 “Top 40 in the United States” (about 5 minutes) The last recorded is “American Top 40,” which was also the Japanese version of the US countdown program. DJ is also interesting here. Mr. Chappy, who will be known as a fan of BAY CITY ROLLERS, is working, but it seems that he lost the interview tape of QUEEN last week and could not broadcast it. He seems to be quite impatient, saying, “After losing the tape, I was sticking to Hotel Pacific almost every day, and I was chasing after QUEEN with Densuke (!).” However, the tape was found safely. You can also listen to the interview with your own voice. As usual, the content of the question is lonely, but Freddie is a little interesting. He is also known for having a Japanese garden at home, but he has revealed an episode in which he has already bought antique furniture since then. And at the end, the recording ends with Mr. Chappy’s voice saying, “Then QUEEN is over and we will move to BAY CITY ROLLER …”, but that voice seems strangely happy. If you think about it, 1976 was the year when BAY CITY ROLLERS first came to Japan, and this broadcast was half a year before the release of “Dedication to Youth.” The scent of that time is one that smells from every corner.

Above, a historical documentary of 59 minutes and 34 seconds. If live albums such as “BUDOKAN 1975 1ST NIGHT” and “BUDOKAN 1976 3RD NIGHT” are vacuum packed at the concert venue, this work is one that contains the private room of Western music fans. In 1975, when he first came to Japan, which was also an incident in the history of Japanese Western music, in 1976, when the aftermath remained, he was already treated as a big game. A time machine album with the scent of that era coming out of the speakers. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content.

★ This is a radio album that collects Japanese programs that were broadcast on the legendary first visit to Japan (1975) and the second visit to Japan (1976). Compiling “3 types of 1975 + 2 types of 1976”, including members and program DJs who are annoyed by explosive Japanese, Freddie’s innocent Japanese and extremely rare messages, etc. “1975 / The scent of “Western music in 1976” is a masterpiece of a documentary album that blows out from the speakers.

★★ The taper of the historical masterpieces “BUDOKAN 1975 1ST NIGHT” and “BUDOKAN 1976 3RD NIGHT” was recorded by himself at that time and digitized directly from the tape collection that he had carefully stored (both 75/76). .. Not only the sound quality but also the freshness of the sound is outstanding. Super! valuable.
