Rajaji National Park: A safari guide’s tips on the best time to visit, hotels, permits

By Riddhi Doshi

Rajaji National Park A safari guides tips on the best time to visit hotels permits

It was in the last few minutes of the morning safari at Rajaji National Park that guide Baseer Bania heard the sharp warning calls of a spotted deer, a langur and a peacock. “There has to be a wild cat around,” he said to his guests. Silence fell upon the jeep, but excitement mounted. They listened closely, eyes peeled for a leopard or a tiger.

After 15 minutes of waiting by the riverbed, a majestic leopard emerged, advancing towards the spotted deer a few metres away. On seeing the jeep, the cat backed into the bush, but Bania insisted that the jeep stay at the same spot.

His patience was rewarded. The leopard leapt out from behind another bush. The spotted deer’s call got louder, as it could smell the cat inching closer, but could not see it as the leopard was brilliantly camouflaged in the yellow-green bushes and grass. Crouching low, the stealthy cat leapt towards the deer. In a matter of seconds, the leopard had his prey. He dragged his kill across the rivulet and left it there, trying to catch a breath.

The exhilarated guests were on their feet. But to their delight, there was more. Soon, two leopard cubs walked towards their mother, and the family feasted on the deer together.

The group of guests got lucky, because whether you spot a leopard in the forest dominated by elephants or not is a matter of chance. It also depends on which gate of the park you enter from and in what season, depending upon the movement of the leopards.

Baseer Bania, 28, in-house naturalist at Aalia Jungle Retreat & Spa, hails from the Vann Gujjar nomadic community that once lived inside the forest. Ten years ago, he began working as a research assistant on a birding project. He has since assisted NGOs, scholars and photographers with their work in the park and is also a certified guide.

Here are his insider tips on how to have the best safari experience at Rajaji National Park.

What makes Rajaji National Park special? Spread across 820 sqkm, this tiger reserve is located in the foothills of the Himalayas. The river Ganges flows through, and the habitat varies from patches of sal forest to Himalayan plains, river beds and grasslands. Until three years ago, Rajaji was mostly known for its large elephant population of over a 1,000. Since then, however, leopard sightings have increased. Around 200 leopards inhabit the area, and 30 of these individuals have been frequently spotted.

What to spot here? “The park attracts both animal and bird enthusiasts”, says Bania. Apart from elephants and leopards, you can also spot tigers here. This is a matter of luck and chance. Only three of the 40 tigers here have been sighted in the park zones open to tourists. Spotting herds of elephants is another big highlight. Then there are the sambar and barking deer, hyenas, golden jackals, the grey mongoose, sloth bears, plus civet cats, wild boars and Himalayan birds. Birders and researchers often come here looking for the Great Hornbill. You can also spot the Great Slaty Woodpecker here.

What is the best time to visit? The park is closed in the monsoons, from mid-June to mid-November. The best time to visit the park for birding is from October to March. As it snows in the Upper Himalaya, many migratory birds, especially those from Russia and Siberia, tend to fly at a lower altitude in the plains and can be easily spotted.

From March to June, temperatures soar to above 40°C. This season offers the best chance of spotting animals. As several water bodies dry up, animals are constantly on the move to find their next drink. “More animal movement means more sightings,” says Bania.

Crested Pied Kingfisher Rajaji National Park

How many safaris should one opt for during a three-night stay? Bania advises booking at least four safaris. Two mornings and two evenings, as both have their own charm. The jungle looks spectacular in the morning light, plus it’s easier to track animal movements with pugmarks left behind while walking at night. “With paw marks, we can access where a particular leopard or a tiger could have travelled to at night. This helps us determine the morning safari’s route,” says Bania.

How to book a safari at the reserve? You can book online or at the forest office counters at the gates. But Bania suggests you book online to avoid any disappointments. Rajaji is not as popular as other national parks in the country, and it’s usually possible to get safari bookings even on the same day at the forest department offices at the five gates. On holidays and during religious events at Haridwar, safari slots are usually sold out.

How much does a safari cost? The forest entrance fee is Rs200*/person for Indian nationals. The road fee for a vehicle is Rs300*. At this park, you can enter with your own vehicle, but it’s always a better idea to hire a Gypsy with a local driver and guide, to have a safe and good experience inside the forest. Charges are Rs.3,500* for a vehicle and Rs.600* to hire a guide. The park doesn’t allow private safaris. Each vehicle carries six to seven people.

Which is the best gate at the park? There are five entry points to the park – Mohand, Chila, Ranipur, Motichoor and Ramghad. More recently, the Mohand gate has reported more leopard sightings. “So, if you get a chance, enter from the Mohand gate, especially in the evenings,” says Bania. The Mohand area has 15 leopards including brothers Heera and Panna, their father Sidhi, mother Laila and another leopard named Shiva. It also has long stretches of sal forest and riverbeds, which makes it more conducive for leopard spotting.

The Chila gate is among the most popular as it is the closest to Haridwar. This is also the part of the forest populated by elephants.

Rajaji National Park A safari guides tips on the best time to visit hotels permits

What are the best hotels to stay in? One of the most luxurious places to stay in is Claridges’ Aalia Jungle Retreat & Spa . The hotel shares its boundaries with the park’s buffer zone and offers accommodation in lavish tents (doubles from Rs.14,700*, book here ). Another option is the cosy hillside cottages at Wild Brook Retreat (doubles from Rs.10,000*, book here ).

Besides safaris, what else can you do in Rajaji National Park? The park is close to Haridwar, Dehradun and Rishikesh. Visit the Jhilmil Jheel Conservation Reserve in Haridwar, a swamp deer habitat that’s great for birding and also has leopards. Opt for white water rafting in Rishikesh. Spend a relaxed day in the scenic Doon Valley or visit the ghats of Rishikesh and Haridwar and see a few temples.

How to get to Rajaji National Park? The closest airport to the park is in Dehradun, which is 35km away. The nearest railway station is Haridwar, which is 24km away. Both buses and taxis are available from these spots to Rajaji National Park.

GOHRI RANGE

Ghori represents the northeastern section of Rajaji The area is bio- rich, with good mix of ecosystems Including forest, Saccharum grasslands and mixed deciduous forest. The Sub- Himalayan biome is prominent in this area, north of the Shivaliks proper. There are hill villages_to the east and north of the range, while the Western areas of Ghori Slope down to the holy Ganges. The Chilla canal also runs through the southwestern corner of the range.

The Tedon gurgles past the eastern flank of Ghori Range. Several perennial streams including the Tedon (pic, below) provide life-giving water in all seasons, and hence there is a wide diversity of mammals, birdse reptiles and invertebrates—Since the Tedon — also known as the Badasni — flows just outside Rajaji, there are three eco-resorts along here, two of which can arrange good birding is a budget option for those self- sufficient in their eco-knowledge. The Tedon Valley is reached via a jeep track that skirts and later crosses the vast grassland flanked Binj Rao seasonal river bed. This is the only road link to villages to Ghori’s east, hence is always open. As one drives east along Binj Rao to the Tedon area, one is transiting Rajaji East.

A winter dawn is a good time to enter Ghori, as one will be facing east. As dawn breaks over the rugged forested ridges on the horizon, the sky will seem to catch fire. ever so slowly. The heavens will change from purple to pink to Initially, one transits a patch of riverine forest. The water table is high, which creates good habitat for riverine flora. Kanju (Holoptelea integrifolia)- trees are common, with an understorey of Rohini trees. Langurs feed on the Kanju leaves and Cheetal will feed on the dropped leaves. This is good habitat for ungulates. Wild Boar too are seen, and possibly Nilgai.

Among birds, winter migrants will be aplenty. Black Stork roost here and-feed on freshwater crabs jn the- Tedon. River Lapwing and Northern Lapwing, too. Grassland birds are visible as_ are Indian Roller, Black- and Spangled Drongo, Indian Silverbill, Baya Weaver and Scaly-breasted Munia. Raptors include Black-winged Kite, White- eyed Buzzard, Common Kestrel and Shikra. Peafowl are numerous, and one may watch out for lndian Hare hopping across the track or even, at dawn or dusk, an elusive Porcupine.

The Vindhyavasini temple is soon reached reached, looming over_the narrow valley, where the Tedon has taken a northward left turn. One may alight and walk up to the temple, which has a very long history going back, according to local belief, to the time of Ram and Sita. The Taal stream meets the Tedon. The Ancient Vindhyavasini temple.

The view from the Vindhyavasini temple shows the rich habitat mix of deciduous forest and farming terraces. Proper here, below the temple. Just a few decades ago were no roads and all people travelled on foot, this was on a pilgrim trail from chilla to Vindhyavasini to Neelkanth.

Since the water in both stream is perennial, there have been small villages in this area for centuries, if not millennia, they still do some terraced farming along the streams. Ergo, there fields attract seed-eating birds such as finches, bushchats robins, stonechats weavers and sparrows. At times, wild boar may raid their fields. One Curious historical oddity is a water mill close to the confluence. It user ancient low-tech means to grind grains into flour but still functions rather efficiently. One must next take the left turn to head north along the valley of the Tedon.

Often, ones sees familiar of elephants, here to bark-strip the areas Rohini and Ber trees and feast on the round fleshy mango-like fruits the Bel tree. One may ponder their huge dunge. As elephant metabolism is inefficient. Nesting material is plucked to birds from the undigested fibers Birds feed on the insects attracted by the nutrients; Indian Rollers and Gohri Bee-eaters may lurk in waiting in forests along the Tedon included Sal, Bakhli (Anogeissus latifolia), Ber (Zizyphus  mauritiana), Kaitha (Limonia acidissima) and ficus wild fig trees. Their leaves, flower and fruit are favoured    by ungulates, langurs and birds alike. The villagers have also planted numerous fruiting tress and flowering shrubs.

With its old-growth forest and fruiting tress, the Tedon valley hosts all  three species of hornbill . Indian Grey Hornbill sometimes seen in noisy screeching flocks of several dozen. Less often, the Great Hornbill is seen, in overflight. Befitting the sheer majesty of this noble bird, it is known locally as the  Banrao  or  Vanraj -the  Forest King .  Red Junglefowl and Khaleej Pheasant too are visible.

Hyena, Ruddy Mongoose and Jungle Cat Kakar are uncoomon here, thought they abound elsewhere in similar forests. As one drives slowly up the narrow valley, as far the jeep tracks allows (the last eco-resort looms over the stream at left), one may also contemplate the role non-native invasive species are playing in the Rajaji ecosystem, and in India in General. Birds and butterflies love Lantana nector, and have propagated it well into the mid-altitudes of the Himalaya. Another invasive shrub here is ‘Vilayati Babul’ (Prosopsis juliflora), which sadly Great Hornbill Buceros bicomis 125 cm. In times gone by, shikar was common here, indulged in both by locals and by British burra Sahibs. Leopard Pugmarks on the sandy banks of the Tedon speak to their presence here. More rare are tiger prints, but some tigers do have territories in this area. Finally,  Himalayan Black Bears  descend to this valley in the winter from the higher Sub-Himalayan ridges. Indeed, the  highest point in Rajaji,  at 1,393m (4.582 ft) is in this area. Both sloth and black bears were once coveted trophies for shikaris. The more  dangerous creature  in Rajaji by wide margin,  is indeed the bear .
