Car big enough for luggage for 4?

We are planning to rent a car to travel in Italy. There are 4 of us (two mature couples). We have 3 price categories: Cheapest includes Opel Astra SW or Ford Focus SW. Middle includes Fiat Corona or Alfa 159. Expensive includes Opel Zafira, Ford S Max or Renault Scenic.

We want enough room to get our luggage from the Rome airport to Tuscany, but would like to keep it as small and inexpensive as possible. The expensive category vehicles seem to be SUVs, and I don't fancy driving one of those through the back roads of the Chianti region.

Actual cargo measurements are impossible to come by on the web. Either a web reference to a site with specifications, or someone with experience know if the Astra or the Focus would be big enough for luggage for 4?

Four adults and luggage can be a problem even with a standard Am sub compact. You might get by if each has only one carry bag a piece. You might check to see if that model is available in the US -- the Ford focus -- and go take a look at it. Call a Ford dealer. They should be able to get the specs for you. But am guessing the cheapest would be too tight.

Two things to keep in mind when renting a car in Italy. Most are standard shift and not automatic and don't drive in Florence. Florence has restricted zones with cameras that will get your rear license plate. Hard to avoid in Florence.

I would always advise to take the trains if available. However, when renting a car, it is always an option to upgrade or upsize upon arrival. Look at the car you've rented and try to squeeze your luggage into the trunk. If it just won't fit then go back to the counter and tell them you need something larger. But be careful about getting a large vehicle in Italy. Roads can be tiny and parking non-existent.

Notker, I have an Astra convertible (less boot size that the sedan)and four would manage luggage if you kept to 'soft'bags, not too large. Perhaps visit a car showroom?? I always use a rolling duffle type thing. LLBean has them,as with any decent store catering to backpackers, travellers and the intrepid. Pack light and be prepared for your hand lugggage - courier bags or whatever, to be with you in the car. Don't leave visible luggage when you park anywhere, and remember to push the side mirrors in when you park too, when in a town. They can get whacked. Have fun.

Try to get a wagon. A compact/midsize wagon will offer more room for luggage than a 4 door sedan of that size.

I'm not sure what mature is. I'm with Peter Pan. :-)

My choice would be the Zafira, S-Max or Scenic. They are taller cars with better legroom in the back and more luggage space. For the more mature, they are easier to get in and out of, and the additional height means you have a better view of the countryside.

Externally, they are about the same size as the Astra and Focus, just taller. They are as easy to drive, although they tend to roll a bit more. We have a Citroen Picasso, which is a similar design.

If you test models on Autoeurope's website, they're pretty accurate about illustrating how many adults and how much luggage each model will hold. Remember, though, you're not assured to get the exact model of car you reserve - just a car in that class.

I would try to get a sedan - no smaller than the Renault Laguna - so that you can safely store the luggage in the trunk and not a visible hatchback.

Also, get a diesel.

Hubby and I had an Opel Astra SW. Since hubby was on military leave he had to have uniform stuff with him in addition to his travel clothes. I also ended up buying a suitcase while I was in Rome. I bought lots of stuff and I had my hubby's cold weather sweater and some other clothes for him.

Anyway, we had a 25in suitcase and a military duffle bag his huge backpack and my carry on in the way back, also think we had another small bag with us I can't remember off the top of my head. If you each have a carry on plus a small personal item every thing should fit. You might have to be patient the first time you pack it to figure out how to fit it. If you all are heavy packers, you might want a bigger car. I enjoyed driving the car. It was alittle slow on the Autobahn but it was comfy and enjoyable.

Oh yeah, the back had a cover on it so you couldn't see in to the hatchback.

I called AutoEurope (phone number on their website; they are in Maine) regarding an upcoming rental in Europe. They were able to tell me the cubic feet of cargo space of all of the models I was considering. Good luck!

Hi Notker, The Alfa 159 will work for your travels. We have traveled with four adults and too much luggage in a Renault Laguna (the same class of car). But with a little creative packing, we got it all in and the hatch lid closed. Consider taking a couple of "ratchet straps" available at hardware shops and motorcycle shops. Then if necessary you can tie a bag or two on the top. Many Europeans do this when they go on holiday. We were on the motorway from Lyon to Avignon on the first Saturday of July (not a good day to travel) and every second car had something tied on the roof. Four adults with luggage. How much luggage?

We leased a seven passenger car (Renault Grand Scenic II on our last big trip to Europe). We had two adults and three kids, age 16, 12 and 8. Each of us had only one carry on. The car was about right for us. It would have been cramped if we had bigger people or more luggage.

Make sure you get a big enough car. Most Euro cars are very small by our standards. I can't imagine you enjoying your trip if you have luggage on your lap.

A Ford Focus would be a stretch even with one carry on each. It wouldn't work at all if you have two pieces each. The station wagon suggestion is a good one. Keep in mind leaving visible luggage in your parked car is courting disaster.

The Ford Mondeo is a good suggestion, especially if you can get it in the hatchback or wagon version. We loved the wagon...it had plenty of room for 4 adults and luggage, and was a comfortable drive. If the rental firm doesn't specifically list the Mondeo, e-mail or call them, and ask them for a list of comparable vehicles (specifying hatchback or wagon) and they should be able to tell you which other European models would be in the same rental class.

Having just done that with 4 women and luggage AND negotiating tight parking spaces in a Ford Mondeo wagon (longer than the Focus), I recommend going with the Focus station wagon. We could have done it with that and had less trouble parking the thing. Unless you are changing hotels every night, your luggage won't spend a lot of time in the car anyway. I saw the Focus SW several times while there so I know that it would have worked.

We rented a ford focus in Italy last year for 4 adults.It was very comfortable(im 6foot 1 in)to drive and ride in.We had limited luggage and we wanted everything in the trunk and it fit.I have also rented a Ford Mondeo and that also was good.We also rented a Nissan Primera and that was Ok also.

As I posted before, the Ford Mondeo is very difficult to park in the parking garages (unless you get lucky and find a garage with several empty spaces side-by-side). I would seriously consider the Focus SW instead. Also regarding luggage in the SW, the car rental companies are a step ahead on that and have dark tinted windows in that area so that no one can see that there is anything in there. They also usually have a cover you can pull over the luggage. As long as everyone packs light, the smaller station wagon should work just fine.

Actually, the new Focus is a bit wider than the Mondeo in all versions...with the mirrors in the proper positions, they're the same width. The difference comes in Mondeo's bigger internal space for back seat passengers, and for cargo in the hatchback and wagon versions.

The width wasn't the issue. It was the length. The Mondeo has a very long turning radius which makes backing and filling to get into a parking space extremely difficult. I managed, with much cursing and lots of help from the passengers, but would rather have had a shorter car. Well, I managed until the last day we had the car. Still waiting to find out if we owe anything for the scraped left front quarter panel. At least it was a wall and not another car that I brushed against.

Yes, you do have to back and fill a lot in European parking garages. But for 4 adults and luggage, personally, I think that's a small price to pay for the extra room.

I think one other thing is important and that is the shape of the luggage.If you have bags that are soft sided they fit better then hard side.Bags with wheels take more room them Steves carry bag.We had no problem fitting in two Steves wheeled bags and four soft sided carry on pieces .This was a Ford Focus.

The Astra is large enough for four people with luggage, we owned one and did road trips with my parents and everything fit.

There’s no need to fly halfway around the world to have a fun time with your family or friends and feel the freedom! With a camper van like All-new Renault Trafic SpaceNomad , you can set out on a whim to roam the countryside, seaside or mountains – and take three people with you: with the extra foldaway bed in the pop top, the van sleeps four.

The pop top is one of the hallmarks of a converted van. It’s the symbol of holidays enjoying total freedom with nothing but nature all around you.

Wanderlust through the roof

As Caroline puts it, “After the pandemic, when we were all unable to travel, many people are yearning for freedom. We are seeing that people want to make the most of their freedom, travel, reconnect with themselves, their loved ones and nature.”

Converted vans with raising roofs, as a result, are becoming more popular than ever these days. They are compact, easy to park and more manoeuvrable than motorhomes. They are as convenient as a car – but you can cook and sleep in them, even in the middle of nowhere, with no restrictions.

A built-in solar panel for extra freedom

This solar panel comes as standard at the top of the range and meets growing demand from customers to spend more time off the grid and at the same time to travel more responsibly, Caroline adds.

This feature is usually an accessory available from converted van specialists. But it’s built into All-new Trafic SpaceNomad because we feel people really want to do more for the environment and to preserve resources, by using renewable energies as much as possible, when they travel. It was natural for us because Renault has always changed in step with society.

The solar panel is very slim to avoid increasing the vehicle’s height and charges the auxiliary battery that powers the fridge, water pump and lights in All-new Trafic SpaceNomad. It extends the battery’s charge from 48 to 72 hours! So there’s no problem if you want to spend a little longer touring the countryside or mountains, stay an extra day or something unexpected comes up. All you need are the sun’s rays.

A raising roof for extra living space

The solar panel isn’t the only feature in the roof that provides extra autonomy for All-new Trafic SpaceNomad users: it also has its own LED lighting to read late into the night and USB ports so that hikers and cyclists who use connected watches, satnavs and the like can set out the next morning with their device all charged up.

This extra living space makes all the difference when you’re parked – and no difference when you’re driving: as it is very slim when folded down, it does not affect the vehicle’s behaviour on the road and barely increases its consumption.

As the roof is very flat, the van is less than 2 metres high, so the vehicle can go anywhere, you don't pay more at tolls you can access most of the parking lots.

Pilote takes on the conversion challenge

All-new Trafic SpaceNomad is made in France, at Renault’s plant in Sandouville , Normandy. Pilote takes care of the conversion – including the pop top and solar panel – at its plant near Angers.

Pilote is a recreational vehicle specialist with 60 years’ experience, and has been converting Renault Trafic vans for over four decades. It had to meet a stringent set of specifications to meet Renault’s high quality standards on All-new Trafic SpaceNomad.

Renault challenged us with the requirements it applies in the automotive world, which are higher than the ones in the recreational vehicle universe. We worked on this van for just over two years to rise to that challenge. Thibaud,  Sales Development Manager, Pilote   

Fully converting an All-new Trafic into an All-new Renault Trafic SpaceNomad takes nine days. Besides the raising roof, it has two swivelling front seats, a rear seat that folds down into a bed, a 49 litre fridge, a two-burner cooktop with piezo ignition, a sink with a built-in tap, a drinking water tank and a wastewater tank, a foldable table you can set up inside or outside, a shower head at the rear, a large 4-sqm-plus awning and 250 litres of storage space.

Tips for Buying Travel Vacuum Bags

Choose your compression method wisely.

Remember that the compression method matters. For example, rolling compression bags are convenient because you don’t have to rely on a pump to flatten them, but they require more physical energy and time to compress and decompress. Bags that use vacuums are the quickest and most effortless, but you’ll need a vacuum to recompress them.

Look for bags that use a portable pump (or no pump)

When traveling, less is more. Compression bags that don’t require a pump not only save space, but can be used any time. If you don’t want to self-roll your bags, consider bag sets that come with a portable pump. 

Compression bags work by removing the air inside the bag in order to make the contents of the bag as flat as possible. They’re great for saving space in your luggage, but keep in mind they don’t change the weight of what you’re packing (so be sure you can still lift your bag and it doesn’t weigh-in over the limit).

Yes, but be aware that TSA may need to decompress the bag during any inspections. This can pose a problem if you can’t re-compress the bags afterward. Be sure to check the dimensions of the bag against the interior dimensions of your luggage before buying. While the size of the clothes will compress down inside of the bag, the outer dimensions of the bag will remain the same. Before packing day, give your travel vacuum bags a test run by filling up a few bags, compressing them, and seeing how they fit into your suitcase.

Using vacuum bags does not make your luggage heavier — packing 30 pounds of clothing will still be 30 pounds whether compressed or not. However, you may find that your suitcase ends up heavier since the vacuum bag will open up more space, allowing you to pack more items. When using vacuum bags for travel, especially in your checked luggage, be sure you're not overpacking to avoid any overweight bag fees.

Most clothing items will not be damaged by using compression or vacuum travel bags, though any items with ornate decorations, pins, or delicate details such as beading may need special handling. Overall, the biggest thing to watch out for when using vacuum travel bags is wrinkling. The longer items stay compressed inside the bag, the deeper the creases can get. If this is a concern, consider packing a travel clothing steamer to help smooth out any wrinkles. 

Yes, you should avoid putting anything with down filling into a rolled or vacuumed compression bag. Flattening feathers can ruin the item. Also, while it may seem smart to pack wet or damp items inside of a sealed plastic bag, this is another no-no as it can create mold. Take care to notice any clothing with sharp embellishments or zippers that could potentially puncture the bag during the compression process.
