We're fans of the original, though, thanks to its clean and straightforward to use interface. Hit the packages section of the site, and you can add up to five connecting flights, choose to add accommodation for all of or only part of your trip, and tag on car rentals too. 

It's all suitably well laid out, and it only takes a few seconds to start putting together your itinerary. However, we do wish there were a few more options for filtering out accessibility issues. Still, for most people, Expedia.com has everything they'll need, and there's even the option of a cruise too if you fancy it. It's as aspirational to look at as it is useful to, well, use and there are extra discounts for booking multiple parts of your vacation with the site. A Things To Do section rounds off the site's bid to help you plan your entire trip in one place.

Booking.com is a giant in the world of holiday bookings and not only offers over half a million properties in more than 207 countries but also offers flights and car rental services too. As such you can do it all from this one spot which makes it a very easy-to-use option. That said, there is a lot going on, and the user interface can be a little overwhelming at times. 

But with a superb rewards program, it is a great option that encourages you to keep coming back, making it easier to use as you become accustomed. You can even sort your taxi hire from this site meaning there is very little to think about when you get traveling as it's all been planned ahead of time. You also don't have to pay a booking fee on lots of hotels, allowing you to remain flexible – ideal if you're traveling about a lot on your journey.

There's also the site's Vacation Value Finder, which lets you tweak how much you're willing to spend and what you're looking for from a vacation before making some fun suggestions. It's perfect for finding a last-minute deal if you don't have your heart set on one place. Students will also appreciate a section dedicated to them with extra discounts once you verify you're a student. All in all, it's a great varied site for numerous different needs. 

4. Priceline.com: Best for user reviews

Priceline is a big deal in the online travel site world for a good reason. It's effortless to use with options available for flights, cars, hotels, or any combination of the three. It's mildly annoying that Priceline's super cheap Pricebreaker deals don't extend to bundles, so you won't get an incredible bargain like you would if you booked separately. However, combining the set is still a worthwhile deal with discounts offered for the more you bundle together. 

One thing we really appreciated is that every hotel we looked at had dozens of reviews, and they're all from verified customers. It takes seconds to gain a reasonably accurate picture of what to expect from wherever you're considering booking. That's the perfect peace of mind when you're booking online, and you can't be sure of what you're getting without user reviews backing hotel statements up. Clearly laid out, you can focus on enjoying rather than worrying. Finally, Priceline is keen to make its VIP scheme easily accessible with straightforward discounts offered to you over time -- something that not all sites so clearly highlight. 

5. Kayak.com: Best for aggregated results

If you're short on time, Kayak is pretty useful. That's because you simply enter where you want to go, and it aggregates results from multiple different sources. 6. Hotwire.com: Best for renting properties

It's not as pretty as some sites, but we really liked the extensive property type filters available. Want to stay on a houseboat or in a chalet at your destination? Hit the relevant filter, and you can find out if that's an option in the locale. That might not matter if your heart is set on a hotel, but it's a nice bonus even amongst the awkward site layout. 

Elsewhere, it's mostly business as usual, but that's no bad thing. Well laid out discounts are available to compare reasonably quickly, and most locations have plenty of reviews. If you feel like tracking down specific deals, you can do that too, with the site keen to offer up discounts to central locations if you're not quite sure where you'd like to visit next. It feels like the site needs updating when you compare it to its rivals, but it works well and speedily enough.

A single review can convince a potential customer to book with your company — that is, if they’re finding your reviews. With so many review platforms to choose from, it would be helpful to know which ones your customers are checking the most.

In this post, you’ll learn about the top seven travel review websites that every tour operator should know about. 

1. Google My Business

Google My Business

Google is the number one website for online reviews. About 64% of consumers say they are likely to check reviews on Google before visiting a business, which is more than any other review site. Google hosts 73% of all online reviews for businesses, according to an analysis by ReviewTrackers.

You can find your business on Google by typing the name into the search bar on this page . If the business doesn’t exist on Google yet, you’ll be prompted to start building a business profile .

Make sure to claim your business profile so that you can control how your business appears in Google searches as well as manage customer reviews. Now, when guests leave you a Google review, you’ll be able to publicly reply as your business. Businesses that respond to Google reviews are seen as 1.7X more trustworthy than businesses that don’t.

2. Facebook

Facebook is the biggest social media site in the world and the second-biggest review site after Google.

The first step is to create a Facebook page for your business. Then, your customers will be able to “Like” your business, leave you a review, and “recommend” your business to others. When customers go to review your business, Facebook will ask them if they “recommend” it to others, as the example shows above.

Reach out to satisfied customers via email, phone, or in person and ask them to leave a review on your Facebook page. Make it easy for your customers to find your Facebook page by making it the same name as your company, as well as linking to it from your website and emails.

3. TripAdvisor

Travelers tend to leave long-form, in-depth reviews on the platform — 3x longer than other leading online travel agent websites and search engines.

A recent Tripadvisor study found that 68% of people are more likely to book after reading a long review. Meanwhile, three out of four respondents said online reviews were “extremely or very important” when making travel decisions, including for accommodations (82%), attractions (77%), and restaurants (70%).

Even if you’ve never created a Tripadvisor page for your business , there’s a good chance your company already has one. If a customer previously reviewed your business on Tripadvisor,  the platform would have automatically created a listing for your business.

To check if you already have a listing, you can search for your company name through this link: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Owners . If your business name shows up, click on it, and start the process of claiming your free listing.

The fastest and simplest way to increase your reviews on TripAdvisor is to remind your guests that your company is open for feedback. Politely ask your guests to review their experience they’re leaving, and follow up with an email linking to your Tripadvisor page.

Expedia is mostly known as a booking engine for hotels and flights, but it also sells tours and activities. When you list your tours and activities on Expedia, they’ll be marketed across Expedia’s portfolio of over 60 travel booking sites like Travelocity and Trivago. The Expedia website alone attracts 47.6 million unique monthly visitors .

Listing your tour company on Expedia can be a great way to drive more bookings, as long as your company can rank high enough in search results for customers to find it. Tours and activities are ranked based on price, location, distance from accommodation options, and traveler reviews .

Positive reviews help prove to Expedia that guests are enjoying your tours, and therefore, your brand should be ranked higher than your competitors.

5. Foursquare

Foursquare has over 100 million users in the U.S. The app provides personalized recommendations of places to go near the user’s current location, making it a viable review platform for attractions.

Customers can “check-in” every time they visit a local business or attraction and share it with other users on the app. To get more reviews on Foursquare, operators should encourage their customers to check in when they arrive. Then, politely remind them to leave a review at the end of their visit.

6. Airbnb Experiences

Reviews are critical to converting customers on Airbnb. Similarly to booking a short-term stay on Airbnb, guests want to know how others feel about an experience before committing to it.

Only guests who have booked and paid for an Airbnb experience can leave a review. Once an experience has ended, guests have 30 days to leave. Operators can then post a public response within 30 days after the review was submitted.

Yelp helps travelers find and review local businesses in their area. It’s a platform that caters to a more local crowd, such as a couple doing a staycation in their own town.

Yelp has 184 million reviews worldwide and reaches 178 million users monthly across mobile, desktop, and app platforms. In fact, 45% of customers are likely to check Yelp reviews before visiting a business. Another study found that 87% of consumers read online reviews for local businesses in 2020, up from 81% in the previous year.

Businesses are technically not supposed to ask their guests for a Yelp review. The idea is that posted reviews are unsolicited and represent customers’ genuine and unbiased opinions. Instead, make sure your business page is updated and place a Yelp badge on your website. 

That way, your customers will know your business is on the platform. They’ll likely want to read your reviews before booking, as well as leave their own after the experience. You can also try sharing your best Yelp reviews on social media as a way to let customers know your Yelp page is open for feedback.

Best practices for collecting more user reviews on travel websites 

Here are some actionable tips to get more detailed reviews on all of the travel sites that we shared above. 

  • Train your staff to ask every customer they talk with to leave a review. This should become a habit.  
  • Encourage staff to make review requests personal, as guests are more likely to respond when they feel they are helping an individual rather than a business.
  • Implement a system to reward staff when their name is mentioned in a five-star review, which will motivate them to encourage guests to leave reviews.

Booked accommodation only for Tenerife…

Booked accommodation only for Tenerife through Travelup after seeing prices/availability on Tripadvisor. Paid small deposit and checked with hotel directly (after reading reviews on here which made me doubt the legitimacy of the company). Hotel confirmed they had my booking, and had no concerns over the Broker (HotelBeds) that TravelUp had booked through. Paid full balance 2 weeks before hols…and no issues with hotel on arrival. Reservation was there and fully paid already. So whilst I had concerns, they turned out to be unnecessary for me!

Great price compared to others

Great price compared to others. Easy to book. The only issue is that they refused to allow hyphens on my kids names on the site. I am not sure why that is, given the growing popularity of double-barrel names. I hope this will not pose a problem at the airport. Otherwise, great experience with the booking process.

Site was much less complex to use than some rivals, and no endless add-ons. Disappointed that a 3% fee was threatened in the pop-up for non visa credit cards.

I made a mistake on my booking by choosing the wrong month, wanted to correct it immediately but web site said it was closed on Sundays. Phoned first thing Monday to be told my tickets are non refundable & I would have to pay £200 in charges & £14 in taxes. I tried to cancel but they said non refundable even within 24hours! When I challenged this I was told the phone lines are open on Sundays it’s the package department that are closed. I would not recommend this company, I wish I had booked direct now as the actual plane company would have rectified this easily. You may get a cheaper ticket but you have no consumer rights with this company. Now I discover that the admin charge is double as I was quoted per person- which I was not told. Terrible customer service Edit: Re:response; just so potential customers know the reply below is the SAME email address as those who have already “dealt” with this so ignore the response.

For ease, speed and features, Google Flights is arguably the best website for flight searches. Search results appear almost instantly. Filters let you narrow down to nonstop options, select a subset of airlines, limit by price or factor in the price of a bag. Similarly, you can use Google Flights filters to avoid certain airlines, multi-stop itineraries, long layovers, early flights or pretty much whatever you might want to avoid.

You can easily check flexible dates, and if you're flexible on where you go you can use the Explore map to see prices for a variety of destinations for certain dates, a certain month or anytime in the next six months.

Google Flights partners with hundreds of airlines and online travel agencies (OTAs) to pull current flight prices. That way you don't have to search each of these sites to be able to see the options. Once you select your preferred trip, Google Flights links you to the top booking options for actually booking your flight — including the airline itself and the best OTA booking options.

The downsides of Google Flights are few. One is the lack of Southwest flight prices. Although Southwest flight schedules will show in flight search results, Southwest flight prices aren't available. That's because Southwest chooses to publish flight prices only on its website.

Another downside is that Google Flights doesn't always show the cheapest prices — particularly for international flights. That means it's worth double-checking prices on another site before booking through Google Flights.

Like Google Flights, Kayak searches hundreds of other websites and flight booking platforms to find the best deal. Kayak generally doesn't let you book flights directly. However, one benefit of Kayak is the streamlined process. Rather than having to click through several pages to confirm your selection, clicking "view deal" on the results page can take you right to the cheapest booking option.

Would you be willing to book a trip as two separate tickets in order to save money? That's the idea behind Kiwi. Instead of simply searching flights from your home airport to your destination, Kiwi checks all potential options to get between A and B. That could mean taking a bus or train from your home city to another to catch a flight to your destination. Or, Kiwi might pair a low-cost domestic flight with a cheap international flight from another city to lower your total cost.

I originally contacted George in your Broadstone office in Dorset last Thursday 2nd May by telephone. I wanted a price for five to visit Kennedy Space Center in Florida. It was terrible experience, will never use flightcatchers book the tickets again. I booked a long haul flight a couple days ago. After the booking, I received phone call from flightcatchers and they told me the baggage is not included with the price. If I want to include the baggage, will have to pay £256 extra. If I wanted to cancel my booking, I also have to pay £250. Their booking site have not made the information, no baggage clear to the customers, and I never heard about long-haul flight doesn’t include the baggage.

Biden-Harris Administration Announces Final Rule Requiring Automatic Refunds of Airline Tickets and Ancillary Service Fees

Rule makes it easy to get money back for cancelled or significantly changed flights, significantly delayed checked bags, and additional services not provided  

WASHINGTON – The Biden-Harris Administration today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued a final rule that requires airlines to promptly provide passengers with automatic cash refunds when owed. The new rule makes it easy for passengers to obtain refunds when airlines cancel or significantly change their flights, significantly delay their checked bags, or fail to provide the extra services they purchased.

“Passengers deserve to get their money back when an airline owes them - without headaches or haggling,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg . “Our new rule sets a new standard to require airlines to promptly provide cash refunds to their passengers.”  

The final rule creates certainty for consumers by defining the specific circumstances in which airlines must provide refunds. Prior to this rule, airlines were permitted to set their own standards for what kind of flight changes warranted a refund. As a result, refund policies differed from airline to airline, which made it difficult for passengers to know or assert their refund rights. DOT also received complaints of some airlines revising and applying less consumer-friendly refund policies during spikes in flight cancellations and changes. 

Under the rule, passengers are entitled to a refund for:

  • Canceled or significantly changed flights: Passengers will be entitled to a refund if their flight is canceled or significantly changed, and they do not accept alternative transportation or travel credits offered. For the first time, the rule defines “significant change.” Significant changes to a flight include departure or arrival times that are more than 3 hours domestically and 6 hours internationally; departures or arrivals from a different airport; increases in the number of connections; instances where passengers are downgraded to a lower class of service; or connections at different airports or flights on different planes that are less accessible or accommodating to a person with a disability.  
  • Significantly delayed baggage return: Passengers who file a mishandled baggage report will be entitled to a refund of their checked bag fee if it is not delivered within 12 hours of their domestic flight arriving at the gate, or 15-30 hours of their international flight arriving at the gate, depending on the length of the flight.  
  • Extra services not provided: Passengers will be entitled to a refund for the fee they paid for an extra service — such as Wi-Fi, seat selection, or inflight entertainment — if an airline fails to provide this service.

DOT’s final rule also makes it simple and straightforward for passengers to receive the money they are owed. Without this rule, consumers have to navigate a patchwork of cumbersome processes to request and receive a refund — searching through airline websites to figure out how make the request, filling out extra “digital paperwork,” or at times waiting for hours on the phone. In addition, passengers would receive a travel credit or voucher by default from some airlines instead of getting their money back, so they could not use their refund to rebook on another airline when their flight was changed or cancelled without navigating a cumbersome request process.  

The final rule improves the passenger experience by requiring refunds to be:

  • Automatic: Airlines must automatically issue refunds without passengers having to explicitly request them or jump through hoops.   
  • Prompt: Airlines and ticket agents must issue refunds within seven business days of refunds becoming due for credit card purchases and 20 calendar days for other payment methods.  
  • Cash or original form of payment: Airlines and ticket agents must provide refunds in cash or whatever original payment method the individual used to make the purchase, such as credit card or airline miles. Airlines may not substitute vouchers, travel credits, or other forms of compensation unless the passenger affirmatively chooses to accept alternative compensation.    
  • Full amount: Airlines and ticket agents must provide full refunds of the ticket purchase price, minus the value of any portion of transportation already used. The refunds must include all government-imposed taxes and fees and airline-imposed fees, regardless of whether the taxes or fees are refundable to airlines.

The final rule also requires airlines to provide prompt notifications to consumers affected by a cancelled or significantly changed flight of their right to a refund of the ticket and extra service fees, as well as any related policies.

In addition, in instances where consumers are restricted by a government or advised by a medical professional not to travel to, from, or within the United States due to a serious communicable disease, the final rule requires that airlines must provide travel credits or vouchers. Consumers may be required to provide documentary evidence to support their request. Travel vouchers or credits provided by airlines must be transferrable and valid for at least five years from the date of issuance.

The Department received a significant number of complaints against airlines and ticket agents for refusing to provide a refund or for delaying processing of refunds during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. At the height of the pandemic in 2020, refund complaints peaked at 87 percent of all air travel service complaints received by DOT. Refund problems continue to make up a substantial share of the complaints that DOT receives.

DOT’s Historic Record of Consumer Protection Under the Biden-Harris Administration

Under the Biden-Harris Administration and Secretary Buttigieg, DOT has advanced the largest expansion of airline passenger rights, issued the biggest fines against airlines for failing consumers, and returned more money to passengers in refunds and reimbursements than ever before in the Department’s history.

  • Thanks to pressure from Secretary Buttigieg and DOT’s flightrights.gov dashboard, all 10 major U.S. airlines guarantee free rebooking and meals, and nine guarantee hotel accommodations when an airline issue causes a significant delay or cancellation. These are new commitments the airlines added to their customer service plans that DOT can legally ensure they adhere to and are displayed on flightrights.gov .  
  • Since President Biden took office, DOT has helped return more than $3 billion in refunds and reimbursements owed to airline passengers – including over $600 million to passengers affected by the Southwest Airlines holiday meltdown in 2022.   
  • Under Secretary Buttigieg, DOT has issued over $164 million in penalties against airlines for consumer protection violations. Between 1996 and 2020, DOT collectively issued less than $71 million in penalties against airlines for consumer protection violations.  
  • DOT recently launched a new partnership with a bipartisan group of state attorneys general to fast-track the review of consumer complaints, hold airlines accountable, and protect the rights of the traveling public.  
  • In 2023, the flight cancellation rate in the U.S. was a record low at under 1.2% — the lowest rate of flight cancellations in over 10 years despite a record amount of air travel.  
  • DOT is undertaking its first ever industry-wide review of airline privacy practices and its first review of airline loyalty programs.

In addition to finalizing the rules to require automatic refunds and protect against surprise fees, DOT is also pursuing rulemakings that would:

  • Propose to ban family seating junk fees and guarantee that parents can sit with their children for no extra charge when they fly. Before President Biden and Secretary Buttigieg pressed airlines last year, no airline committed to guaranteeing fee-free family seating. Now, four airlines guarantee fee-free family seating, and the Department is working on its family seating junk fee ban proposal.  
  • Propose to make passenger compensation and amenities mandatory so that travelers are taken care of when airlines cause flight delays or cancellations.   
  • Expand the rights for passengers who use wheelchairs and ensure that they can travel safely and with dignity . The comment period on this proposed rule closes on May 13, 2024.

There are different implementation periods in this final rule ranging from six months for airlines to provide automatic refunds when owed to 12 months for airlines to provide transferable travel vouchers or credits when consumers are unable to travel for reasons related to a serious communicable disease.

Automatic Refunds and No More Hidden Fees: D.O.T. Sets New Rules for Airlines

The Transportation Department issued new requirements on refunds when flights are canceled or delayed and on revealing “junk” fees before booking. Here’s what passengers can expect.

The Transportation Department on Wednesday announced new rules taking aim at two of the most difficult and annoying issues in air travel: obtaining refunds and encountering surprise fees late in the booking process.

“Passengers deserve to know upfront what costs they are facing and should get their money back when an airline owes them — without having to ask,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in a statement, adding that the changes would not only save passengers “time and money,” but also prevent headaches.

The department’s new rules, Mr. Buttigieg said, will hold airlines to clear and consistent standards when they cancel, delay or substantially change flights, and require automatic refunds to be issued within weeks. They will also require them to reveal all fees before a ticket is purchased.

Airlines for America , a trade group representing the country’s largest air carriers, said in a statement that its airlines “abide by and frequently exceed” D.O.T. consumer protection regulations.

Passenger advocates welcomed the new steps.

Tomasz Pawliszyn, the chief executive of AirHelp, a Berlin-based company that assists passengers with airline claims, called it a “massive step forward and huge improvement in consumer rights and protection” that brings the United States closer to global standards in passenger rights.

Here’s what we know about the D.O.T.’s new rules, which will begin to go into effect in October.

There’s now one definition for a “significant” delay.

Until now, airlines have been allowed to set their own definition for a “significant” delay and compensation has varied by carrier . Now, according to the D.O.T., there will be one standard: when departure or arrival is delayed by three hours for domestic flights and six hours for international flights.

Passengers will get prompt refunds for cancellations or significant changes for flights and delayed bags, for any reason.

When things go wrong, getting compensation from an airline has often required establishing a cumbersome paper trail or spending untold hours on the phone. Under the new rules, refunds will be automatic, without passengers having to request them. Refunds will be made in full, excepting the value of any transportation already used. Airlines and ticket agents must provide refunds in the original form of payment, whether by cash, credit card or airline miles. Refunds are due within seven days for credit card purchases and within 20 days for other payments.

Passengers with other flight disruptions, such as being downgraded to a lower service class, are also entitled to refunds.

The list of significant changes for which passengers can get their money back also includes: departure or arrival from an airport different from the one booked; connections at different airports or flights on planes that are less accessible to a person with a disability; an increase in the number of scheduled connections. Also, passengers who pay for services like Wi-Fi or seat selection that are then unavailable will be refunded any fees.

Airlines must give travel vouchers or credits to ticketed passengers unable to fly because of government restrictions or a doctor’s orders.

The vouchers or credits will be transferable and can be used for at least five years after the date they were issued.

Fees for checked baggage and modifying a reservation must be disclosed upfront.

Airlines and ticket agents are now required to display any extra fees for things like checking bags or seat selection clearly and individually before a ticket purchase. They will also need to outline the airline’s policies on baggage, cancellations and changing flights before a customer purchases a ticket.

The rules, which apply to all flights on domestic airlines and flights to and from the United States operated by foreign airlines, have varying start dates.

For example, automatic refunds must be instituted by the airlines within six months. But carriers have a year before they’re required to issue travel vouchers and credits for passengers advised by a medical professional not to fly.

Mine-Cart Madness: Guests will hop into a mine cart and careen through the jungle to help Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong protect the coveted golden banana on this first-of-its-kind family coaster. Utilizing an unprecedented ride system, innovative technology and a unique coaster design, Mine-Cart Madness will send riders on a thrilling adventure where they will experience the jaw-dropping maneuvers that they’ve seen Donkey Kong and the mine carts perform in the video games – including getting blasted out of a barrel, seemingly jumping over gaps as they speed along a rickety track, and so much more.

Traveling abroad for presentations or research this summer.

The University of Iowa is committed to engaging in research with collaborators from around the globe, working together to foster scholarship, develop new projects and research, and serve the public.   

“At the same time, it is important to safeguard intellectual property and institutional data, and to be aware of sponsor requirements and federal regulations,” said Mike Andrews, director of research integrity and security. “There are several institutional and federal regulations that researchers may not be aware of that are important to consider prior to leaving on a research trip abroad."  

Researchers at the University of Iowa have access to a wide range of resources available to support international collaboration. From travel insurance and laptop rentals, to assistance understanding federal sponsor requirements and export control regulations, UI staff are available to help prior to the initiation of a trip or collaboration.   

The Division of Sponsored Programs hosts an extensive website with resources and applicable policy information.   

 1. Review policies on travel and travel insurance   

Institutional policies  

In order for the institution to be informed of, and support researchers and scholars who are traveling internationally for research and scholarship, travelers must request pre-approval prior to university-sponsored travel. The pre-approval process in ProTrav, which routes to a traveler’s supervisor, ensures that the travel is approved and meets institutional requirements.   

The university provides travel insurance for university-sponsored travel to international locations only if the ProTrav trip request is approved in advance of the departure date. Read more about the UI travel policy.  

Sponsor policies  

In addition to requesting institutional approval, researchers must also request pre-approval from a sponsor if the travel is associated with a sponsored project.  Obtaining institutional approval via ProTrav does not constitute sponsor approval.  Since specific foreign travel approval requirements vary by sponsor, travelers should contact the Division of Sponsored Programs with questions about requesting prior approval.  

2. Disclose working with a foreign entity   

The U.S. government is engaged in a multifaceted effort to raise awareness of the potential for foreign influence on research, intellectual property, and associated technology implementation. To ensure that external activities are conducted in a manner consistent with institutional and public values, policies have been established to ensure that university employees avoid improper conflicts, and otherwise disclose activities for review and management.  

Institutional policies   

The university requires all researchers to disclose activities with foreign governments and institutions of higher education, such as presenting, teaching or conducting research external to university research activities. These disclosures should also include any form of payments, stipends, personal reimbursed travel, honoraria, and remunerations.  

The Conflict of Interest in Research Office can assist with any questions you have about what must be disclosed for research disclosure purposes. Although not exhaustive, a sample list of activities and external interests to disclose is posted on its website.   

Disclosing external research collaborations is also subject to conflict of commitment policies . Contact the Office of the Provost for more information on conflict of commitment disclosures.   

Activities under all conflict of interest and commitment policies must be disclosed to the institution through the eCOI platform .   

In addition, most federal sponsors require disclosure of other support or related activities with foreign governments and other organizations. For additional information about the information that must be disclosed to federal funding agencies, please review the Division of Sponsored Programs’ website or contact the Division of Sponsored Programs with questions.   

3. Protect university devices and data  

ITS hosts a webpage of best practices and things to consider prior to leaving campus on university-related business with personal or university owned equipment, with detailed checklists of considerations for both hardware and software. An important rule of thumb is to not travel with any devices or data you cannot replace or would not want to lose.  

ITS also offers a laptop rental program for various purposes including travel. Authorized departmental purchasing requestors can reserve equipment online for pickup at the ITS offices in 2800 University Capitol Centre during normal business hours (Monday-Friday, 8-5 p.m.). Details about the process are available on the ITS’s laptop rental webpage .   

4. Consider export controls    

Export control regulations may apply to several aspects of international travel. Questions to consider prior to travel are:  

Destination: Are you traveling to a sanctioned country?  

People, institutions, and businesses you will interact with: Are they listed on a U.S. Government restricted list? The regulations prohibit engaging in transactions or providing services to entities and individuals who appear on U.S. Government restricted lists.  

Items you are carrying, both as part of your luggage or to share with a collaborator: Is it restricted for your destination or is a license required?  

Information/Technical Data on your devices: Is it export controlled?

Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story

For buffs of any age, Unfrosted abounds in affectionate and jokey movie and TV references . And there are endless nods to ’60s pop culture totems (in the opening minutes alone, Woody Woodpecker, the Slinky and G.I. Joe make fleeting appearances), but whether anyone born after 1963, the year the movie takes place, will get most of them is another question. It should be noted, too, that Seinfeld’s recent stances on divisive political issues will make it difficult for even some longtime fans to wholeheartedly embrace him anymore. But for those willing to put aside reality for 90 minutes, as Unfrosted does with gusto, the Netflix movie whips up a frothy sendup of storytelling tropes and clichés.

A couple of dumpster-diving kids (Eleanor Sweeney and Bailey Sheetz, both aces) have clued in exec Bob to Post’s advances on that front. In an evil-looking edifice across the street, the turbaned and ruthless Marjorie Post ( Amy Schumer ) and her relentlessly abused right-hand man (Max Greenfield) are ready to launch their new product, though whether they’ll call it Dextrose Dillies or Fresh Flatties has yet to be decided. Upping its game, Kellogg’s holds a press conference, straight out of The Right Stuff , to introduce its team of “taste pilots,” a mix of historical and invented figures played by James Marsden, Jack McBrayer, Thomas Lennon, Bobby Moynihan and Adrian Martinez, with a cameo by the Univac computer.

Bob and his boss, the affably gruff and gruffly affable Edsel Kellogg III (a pitch-perfect Jim Gaffigan), are not only feeling the toaster-pastry existential pressure, but are also dealing with labor unrest among disgruntled cereal mascots. Leading the push is a Shakespearean actor slumming it as Tony the Tiger ( Hugh Grant , lending a Brit slant and delicious intensity to the real-life Thurl Ravenscroft), while Snap, Crackle and Pop (Kyle Mooney, Mikey Day and Drew Tarver) are convinced they’re being held back from realizing their career potential.

Buoyed by Christophe Beck’s score, a midcentury world-of-tomorrow vibe infuses the proceedings. The exuberant playfulness of Clayton Hartley’s production design and Susan Matheson’s vibrant costumes is balanced by the formal restraint of William Pope’s lensing.

Not all the bits land, though, and the story hits a momentum lag midway through. But at its strongest, the movie delivers spot-on spoofs of shopworn narrative devices — the chalkboard brainstorming scene, for one.

Best of all, there’s not a drop of corporate mythologizing in the mishmash of factoid and fantasy. Seinfeld’s love of packaged breakfast foods might color this movie’s world, but far from an ode to product integrity posing as thoughtful and irreverent, Unfrosted tosses off Pop-Tart putdowns as fast as you can toast ’em. Nothing is sacred here. I could have lived without the Gus Grissom jokes, but it’s refreshing to see the perpetually valorized Walter Cronkite (Kyle Dunnigan) as something of a pathetic buffoon.

The closest the movie gets to unadulterated sweetness is in its framing device involving an adorable runaway boy (Isaac Bae). Here too, though, Seinfeld wisely withholds the sugar frosting, even if Kellogg’s eventually decided otherwise.
