WRC Safari Rally: Everything you need to know

The notorious safari rally kenya, renowned as one of the toughest events in motorsport, marks the halfway point in the 2023 world rally championship this weekend..

The rally has prided itself on being one of the WRC’s jewel in the crown events given its difficulty to win. Its unique stages feature a mix of rough gravel and soft sandy roads sprawled across Kenya’s iconic wildlife-filled savannah. amid changeable weather, poses an altogether different challenge for crews.

Last year’s Safari winner and reigning world champion, Kalle Rovanpera heads to Kenya with a 25-point lead at the top of the standings after finishing third at rain-affected Rally Sardinia earlier this month.

His Toyota squad emerged as the team to beat in Africa 12 months ago, after scoring a dominant 1-2-3-4, but the Japanese marque is likely to face stronger opposition this year from the rapidly improving Hyundai and M-Sport-Ford.

Eight-time world champion Sebastien Ogier, who won the 2021 Safari, will factor in Toyota’s line-up alongside Elfyn Evans , who sits fourth in the championship and two-time Safari podium finisher Takamoto Katsuta .

Heavy rain is expected to dominate proceedings in Kenya which could cause problems for the Toyota GR Yaris which struggled to navigate water crossings in Sardinia.

Hyundai heads to Kenya off the back of its first victory of the season following Thierry Neuville ’s triumph in Sardinia, where the Belgian headed a Hyundai 1-2 with Esapekka Lappi in second. This weekend will be Lappi’s first taste of the Safari Rally.

Hyundai faced several reliability concerns last year but if it can replicate its form in Italy, all three i20 Ns, including veteran Dani Sordo should be in contention for victory.

M-Sport-Ford will field three Pumas in Kenya as privateer Jourdan Serderidis rejoins the WRC team for the first time since Rally Mexico in March.

Ott Tanak is set to lead the Ford team’s charge as he looks to reel in Rovanpera in the championship standings after an electrical fault on his Puma cost him valuable points in Sardinia.

Team-mate Pierre-Louis Loubet has starred in rough rallies previously but this weekend marks his Safari debut.

What is Safari Rally Kenya?

The Safari Rally was first held in 1953, as the East African Coronation Safari in Kenya, Uganda and Tanganyika as a celebration of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.

In 1960 it was renamed the East African Safari Rally and kept that name until 1974, when it became the Kenya Safari Rally.

Held on roads still open to the public, it became notorious as the toughest round of the WRC. Arduous conditions and constantly changing weather and more than 5000 competitive kilometres made simply finishing an achievement.

The event adopted a special stage format in 1996 and from then until 2002, it featured over 1000km of timed tests. The rally left the WRC in 2002 and returned in 2021 with a revised shorter format that remains one of the toughest challenges on the calendar.

Unlike other rounds on the calendar, crews are forbidden to test in the local area to prepare for the event.

Safari Rally Kenya winners

The late Kenyan rally ace Shekhar Mehta and fellow compatriot Carl Tundo are the event’s most successful drivers, having scored five wins apiece.

Mehta scored his first in the Safari Rally’s first event on the WRC calendar in 1973 before taking four more wins from 1979-1982, while countryman Tundo's victories have come from editions held outside of the WRC schedule in 2004, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2018.

During its run as a WRC event from 1973-2002, the 1979 world champion Bjorn Waldegard and four-time world title winner Juha Kankkunen scored four wins.

The Safari Rally was the scene of Colin McRae’s final WRC win in 2002. It was the 1995 world champion’s third Safari Rally triumph, alongside wins for Subaru in 1997 and Ford in 1999 and 2002.

PLUS: Remembering Colin McRae’s last WRC win

World champions Miki Biasion, Tommi Makinen and Richard Burns have all won the rally twice.

Toyota has dominated the rally since it returned to the WRC thanks to victories for Sebastien Ogier and Kalle Rovanpera in 2021 and 2022 respectively. Last year, the marque scored a stunning 1-2-3-4.

M-Sport’s Gregoire Munster will represent the British squad, while the legendary Kenyan Tundo is likely to be in the fight as he prepares to pilot a Skoda Fabia.

A total of 22 Kenyans will tackle their home round of the WRC, including WRC3 regular Hamza Anwar.

How have the Rally1 cars changed for 2023

WRC teams have spent the off-season refining Rally1 machines ahead of a second season under the new hybrid rules.

Reigning champions Toyota have not stood still. The pronounced air boxes that adorned the flanks of the car to cool the hybrid unit have been replaced with a much smoother more aerodynamic design, as it was found the 2022 design overestimated the amount of cooling required for the hybrid unit This has resulted in a re-design of the rear fenders and arches. The rear wing has also been tweaked to compensate for the new aero package.

In addition to the aero changes, Toyota has elected to upgrade its 1.6-litre engine to improve the delivery of power and its torque.

Hyundai has also revealed noticeable changes to its aero on its i20 N. The 2023 car features updated bodywork to the front and rear of the car. The bonnet has been flattened and extended while the front arches have also been modified. The team has also opted for a heavily revised rear wing and wing mirrors.

The new look extended front end has turned the nose of the car into effectively an extra splitter. At the rear, a new rear wing has been designed with last year’s central wing and end plate option transformed into one continuous wing covering the maximum width of the car.

Meanwhile, M-Sport has unveiled a bold new look for its Puma Rally1 with an electric blue and pink livery, replacing its popular purple colours from last season. While the car looks similar to its 2022 model, the team plans to continue its development during the season.

How does the Rally1 hybrid system work?

Drivers will have the use of hybrid power during every stage, with power boosts activated by the throttle pedal, while further boosts will be unlocked through energy regeneration under braking during stages.

Pilots will be required to regenerate 30 kilojoules of energy before another boost is granted that will be used the next time they touch the throttle pedal.

The extra 130 horsepower is delivered through the use of three bespoke homologated engine maps selected by teams, depending on the type of stage and conditions.

Determined by the FIA and event organisers, drivers will be required to navigate parts of road sections and around event service parks in full electric mode.

In full-electric mode, the car has a range of 20km, while its 3.9KWH battery, operating up to 750 volts, can be plugged in and recharged in the service park within 30 minutes. The hybrid unit can withstand an impact of 70G.

The cars are powered by a 100% sustainable fuel.

Testing reduction and other rule changes

The sporting regulations have undergone a refresh with arguably the biggest change being a reduction in testing.

WRC teams will only be permitted 21 test days (seven per driver) instead of the allotted 28 as per last season in bid to reduced costs and improve sustainability. Last year each manufacturer driver would complete a pre-event test day prior to all European rounds.

The move has prompted mixed views among teams and drivers.

Also new for this year, Rally1 drivers will be restricted to using a total of 28 tyres during an event. They will also be no longer handed an extra four tyres for use in shakedown.

In Gravel rallies only, organisers have removed the 15 minutes service normally held before the start of each day.

“By removing the morning service on gravel events and trimming the flexi-service window for P1 cars, we can reduce the working day by up to three hours, which will benefit team members but also the many volunteer officials, including scrutineers and service park marshals,” explained FIA rally director Andrew Wheatley.

The rigorous lessons learned in Citroën’s sole Safari

Denis Giraudet hanging out of a three-wheeled Xsara is well remembered, but what did Citroën take from the Safari in 2002?

Photography by McKlein Image Database

Words by David Evans , DirtFish Head of Media

The voice was familiar, but quite out of context. The voice was that of Björn Waldegård, three-time Safari Rally winner. It came complete with helicopter soundtrack.

The Swede was staring down from a couple of hundred feet at the alarming sight of a three-wheeling Citroën with the boot open and Denis Giraudet hanging out of the right-rear. Thomas Rådström’s #20 Xsara WRC was still some distance from service in Suswa. The radio in the French firm’s mission control tent crackled into life.

“The front-right is completely gone,” said Waldegård, with an unusual urgency to lilting Swedish tones. “Repeat. Front-right completely gone. You will need to change everything.”

Guy Fréquelin removed his trademark Aviators and rubbed his brow.

On the eve of his team’s first ever Safari Rally in 2002, the Frenchman had been quite clear on his approach.

We cannot win this rally. Our expectations? Zero Guy Fréquelin

“We are here for experience,” he told me. “We cannot win this rally. Our expectations?

Then Rådström had rather spoiled that by going second fastest on the first section in Kedong, raising expectations which looked to be dashed before Friday was done.

The irony of Citroën’s first ever African outing was that it turned out to be entirely unnecessary in terms of experience – the event never formed part of a Citroën season again.

Running a part-program in 2002, the Versailles team didn’t need to compete on the Safari. But technical director Jean-Claude Vaucard knew this place of old though. His thinking was simple: “If you’re ready for Africa, you’re ready for anywhere.”

Four years later, when the Xsara WRC bowed out of the world championship it had won 55% of the events it had started. Vaucard might have been onto something.

The Xsara's first win of 2002 came two rallies later with Sébastien Loeb

Rådström recovered from losing a wheel early on and a consistent pace through the weekend allied to a series of retirements helped haul him back up to what had looked like an unlikely podium. He was third. Two places ahead of a frustrated Sébastien Loeb.

The Achilles heel Africa unearthed on the Xsara WRC was the suspension. The dampers simply weren’t up to the sustained and constant pounding the Safari puts them through.

With just the 50-mile section from Seyabei to Kerrerie remaining Markko Märtin was 1m18s ahead. Loeb fancied turning fifth to fourth and pushed hard. At the mid-section, he was on target to pass the Estonian’s factory Focus RS WRC, only for the pace to slide away towards the finish.

What happened?

“The dampers,” he said. “Again, the dampers. I push and make some time and when I am ready to push some more, then I know I can’t because we will lose them.

“What can we do? It’s frustrating. I think we lost 18 minutes because of this problem – without that, maybe we can be second.”

Aviators back in place, Fréquelin smiled. Two top-five places for his two cars was a strong result on an event the team had come to with some trepidation.

More pertinently, he admitted that the Xsara WRC was really starting to show some pace on the gravel – something he saw as vital for attracting talent to the drivers’ seat for the following season.

How did that go?

Citroën started 2003 with Colin McRae, Carlos Sainz and an Alsatian who would win nine of the next 10 drivers’ championships.

The Safari Rally

Through the eyes of a subaru fan.

If you’re a Subaru/ Safari Rally fan the timeline officially starts in 1980 and ends in 2002. In this overview Subaru was being used as a rally car in the Safari, either by privateers or professional teams, Group N, Group A or WRC.

The Inmarsat Safari in 2002 was not only the last Safari after it’s 50 years of existance it was also the last one for the Subaru WRT as Subaru pulled out of the WRC in 2008.

As the Safari Rally got revived in 2020 and privateers still enter with older Group N Subaru’s, these years became interesting to follow. Select your favourite year from the overview and find all the information about the event you need!

The legendary Safari Rally in Kenya returns to the World Rally Championship this weekend after an 19-year hiatus. These photos from the Girardo & Co. Archive encapsulate why the African event holds a near-celestial status for rally lovers…

From 1973 to 2002, the Safari Rally in Kenya struck equal parts awe and fear in the courageous drivers who competed there. Impossibly long special stages, stifling dust, sweltering temperatures and craggy, near-unpassable terrain, all set against a breathtaking backdrop, combine to make one of motorsport’s greatest spectacles.

Amid organizational and financial issues, the Safari Rally lost its WRC status in 2003. And tragically, the African round remained off the calendar for 19 years. But finally, on Thursday of this week, the current crop of World Rally Championship drivers started the Safari Rally and got a taster of the event’s unique challenges for the very first time.In light of the event’s return to top-flight rallying, we took to the Girardo & Co. Archive to find 10 photos which capture the magic of this epic endurance marathon held in one of the world’s most beautiful countries. We hope you enjoy looking at the images as much as we did searching for them. Oh, and Godspeed to all the drivers taking part in Africa this weekend.

Richard Burns and his co-driver Robert Reid scrabble desperately to unbeach their stricken Peugeot 206 WRC during the 2002 edition of the Safari Rally, an endeavour which would ultimately prove fruitless. We actually sold this very car earlier this year – click here to find out more about it.Click here to buy this photo from the Girardo & Co. Archive.

For many, images just like this one of Alessandro Fiorio and Luigi Pirollo’s Lancia Delta Integrale absolutely caked in mud and with its additional spotlights ablaze back in 1990 are the first things that spring to mind when they think of the Safari Rally.Click here to buy this photo from the Girardo & Co. Archive.

The Ford Motor Company’s squadron of pilots are introduced to some of the local wildlife during a rest stop on 1999’s Safari Rally. Only in Kenya!Click here to buy this photo from the Girardo & Co. Archive.

Suspension raised to frankly comical heights, additional spotlights, snorkels snaking their way up the A pillars, spare wheels on the roof and enormous bull bars – if they’re to endure the toughest terrain on the WRC calendar, rally cars require a serious makeover for the Safari Rally. Here, the Kenyan drivers Shekhar Mehta and Rob Combes demonstrate why.Click here to buy this photo from the Girardo & Co. Archive.

For us here at Girardo & Co., nothing screams Safari Rally more than a Lancia 037 Rally, spotlights ablaze, spare wheel bungee-tied to the roof and Martini livery obscured by a thick coating of dust, going hell for leather ahead of a vast trailing plume of thick dust. Just perfect.Click here to buy this photo from the Girardo & Co. Archive.

Blissful oasis’ turn into treacherous hazards on Rally Safari – here, Alessandro Fiorio and Luigi Pirollo’s Lancia Delta Integrale takes a dip during the 1990 Rally Safari.Click here to buy this photo from the Girardo & Co. Archive.

They don’t call it the Safari Rally for nothing – if drivers didn’t encounter at least one of the ‘Big Five’ by the end of the rally, we imagine they would have been bitterly disappointed. After all, they’d travelled all that way to Africa! Vic Preston and John Lyall caught this brace of elephants from their Lancia 037 Rally back in 1984.Click here to buy this photo from the Girardo & Co. Archive.

Whether you’re cruising through central Rome during the Mille Miglia or traversing remote African plains at full speed, there’s something about motorsport which excites and unites people. Here, the filthy Toyota Celica Turbo of Didier Auriol and Bernard Occelli is cheered on at a railway crossing by frenzied locals, clearly loving the fact the World Rally Championship is in town.Click here to buy this photo from the Girardo & Co. Archive.

Few drivers relished the challenge of the East African terrain like Colin McRae. The Scot won the notoriously difficult event thrice, in 1997, ’99 and 2002. He and his longstanding co-driver Nicky Grist can be seen here tackling a jagged rocky special stage on their way to victory in 1999. To say the conditions were punishing on the cars is a serious understatement. Click here to buy this photo from the Girardo & Co. Archive.

We couldn’t put this list together and not include a shot of our beloved ‘P8 WRC’, the Subaru Impreza WRC in which Colin McRae and Nicky Grist won the 1997 Safari Rally and which we’ve made Internet famous over the course of the last four years.Click here to buy this photo from the Girardo & Co. About Dinamo Elektrostal

Moscow’s Dinamo Elektrostal are gearing up for their fifth EHL season having frequently picked off impressive wins but have yet to top their particular group in their previous attempts.

They did get the best of arch rivals Dinamo Ak-Bars in both the Russian Cup and the Prometheus International tournament to show they are knocking on the door.

There has been a reasonable level of turnover from 2020 with Anton Noshin, Evgenii Mokrousov, Aleksei Godenkov and Ivan Zuikov joining the newly formed TsOP Moskomsport outfit. Danill Karagodin, Mikhail Nekludov and Ilya Larikov have all retired.

Their replacements are mostly youngsters with Dmitry Zheleznyakov, Aleksei Samylkin, Petr Agapov, Ilia Bartenev, Andrei Gribanov and Oleg Kulakov joining their line-up.

Traveller’s Cave Hotel

Goreme, Cappadocia, Turkey

  • Full Review
  • Particularly well presented Cappadocia-style building
  • Located on hillside with panoramic views
  • Spacious and well furnished terrace
  • Nicely finished rooms with ample amenities
  • Many rooms include fireplaces and whirlpool tubs
  • Free Wi-Fi throughout
  • Lacking a little in personal touch
  • Uphill walk from town center

Bottom Line

The 21-room Traveller's Cave Hotel is one of the more smartly presented properties in Göreme, both inside and out, while retaining plenty of rustic charm. It's not a family-run hotel, so service tends more toward the professional than the personal touch, but staff are still on hand to help organize anything from balloon rides to airport transfers. Rooms are also nicely finished (some have fireplaces and whirlpool tubs), while the spacious, plush, panoramic terrace is a real highlight. The location up a steep hill means it won't be ideal for those with mobility concerns, but all things considered, rates are more than reasonable.

Oyster Hotel Review

Well-presented, typically cappadocia-style small hotel with plenty of open space.

The Traveller's Cave Hotel is a particularly well presented example of the area's typical Cappadocia-style architecture of elegant archways, panoramic terraces, and grotto-like rooms chiseled out of the amorphous volcanic rock. Neat gardens with well tended lawns feature some of the best vistas over the stunning valley, while the property is scattered with ubiquitous terra-cotta potted plants and rustic, wooden furnishings for an authentic feel. Unlike most hotels in Göreme, however, the Traveller's Cave Hotel is not family-run but one of a small chain of lodgings in the area, so can lack a little of the homeyness that some others have in spades. The ambience is still welcoming with some cozy spots as well as some lovely wide open seating areas making for enough space for everyone to drink in the views.

Perched on a hillside a 10-minute walk from Göreme town center

The location is perched on the hillside to the north of Göreme, about a 10-minute walk away from the town center. The impressive complex of rock-cut dwellings of the Open Air Museum is around 15 minutes away on foot and the ancient 11th-century El Nazar Church is around 20 minutes away. The hotel can organize free transportation to and from the nearby bus station, while also offering transfers to and from both Kayseri and Nevsehir Kapadokya airports (for a fee), which takes between an hour and an hour and a half.

Smartly finished rooms with plenty of in-room amenities including free Wi-Fi

The hotel has a total of 21 rooms, 17 of which are carved from the volcanic rock while the others have bare limestone walls. Rooms are particularly nicely finished, with comparatively clean lines and polished wooden floors while retaining a pleasant rustic feel with traditional furnishings and Turkish rugs. In-room amenities are impressive, and include free Wi-Fi, mini-fridges, tea and coffee facilities, and flat-screen TVs with satellite (and English-speaking) channels. Bathrooms are also better than most, many having hammam-style stone basins and whirlpool tubs, while many rooms also feature fireplaces.

Spacious and well-furnished panoramic terraces

The traditionally styled restaurant serves a free breakfast each morning which can be taken out on the spacious, well-furnished terraces with those wonderful panoramic views. Lunch and dinner are also available on request and drinks are served throughout the day. All the usual activities can be arranged through the hotel -- ballooning, quad-biking, horse-riding -- and bus station pick-ups (free) and airport transfers (charged) are also available.

Cappadocia is famous for its desert landscapes and unique cave dwellings. People have been living in caves here since as far back as the 7th century, and very little has changed.

Caves provide the ultimate protection from the blazing sun. The rock keeps the cool air in, and the hot air out, which makes for a comfortable sleeping environment.

But hold up, if you’re thinking that cave dwellings in Cappadocia are damp, dark caves with dripping water and stalagmites forming, you’d be highly mistaken. In fact, many of them have been converted into hotels, from cozy budget hotels to high-end luxury hotels.

Staying in a cave hotel in Cappadocia is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and one of the best ways to truly appreciate the uniqueness of the area. But which are the best cave hotels in Cappadocia? We’ve picked out 15 of the best of the best.

Best Cave Hotels in Cappadocia Comparrison

Best area to stay in cappadocia.

If it’s your first time in Cappadocia and you’re not sure where to stay , allow us to introduce you to the neighborhoods. Many people think Cappadocia is a city, but it’s actually a region comprised of several different towns, villages, and cities. Where you stay will largely depend on what you want to get out of your trip.

travellers cave hotel turkey

Where to Stay for First Time Visitors: Goreme

If it’s your first time in Cappadocia, Goreme is the best place to stay. It’s centrally located to many of the main attractions and within walking distance to Pigeon Valley , Love Valley , Red and Rose Valley, and many of the other popular Cappadocian hiking trails .

It’s also accessible to many of the landmarks in the region by public transport, as the Avanos to Nebisher bus runs through here.

Goreme is a small town but it’s thriving with tourists. You’ll find many places to stay here from high-end luxury to budget hostels.

Where to Stay for Couples: Uchisar

Uchisar is famous for Uchisar Castle and is the highest point of Cappadocia. It’s located just a 5-minute drive from Goreme, so if you’re looking to stay somewhere quiet but still be close to the action, this is a good choice.

Uchisar is small and tends to have more luxury accommodation options here. It also has some of the best restaurants in Cappadocia, which is why it’s our top pick for where to stay for couples.

Uchisar-Castle-Red-Tour

Where to Stay for Families: Cavusin

Cavusin is another small village that’s similar to Uchisar in that it’s historic and surrounded by cave dwellings. It’s also within walking distance of Red Valley and Rose Valley, and it’s also easy to get to Goreme and Avanos by bus.

It has a few lively restaurants but it’s much quieter than Goreme, and consequently off the backpacker’s trail, which makes it an ideal place to stay for a family holiday in Turkey .

Where to Stay for Seclusion: Urgup

Urgup is not a popular choice for places to stay in Cappadocia, but it should be. It’s similar in size to Goreme and is full of amazing accommodation options and restaurants, but it’s not easy to get to many of the attractions in Cappadocia without a car.

Because you do need to rent a car if you’re staying in Urgup, many people prefer to stay in Goreme where there are better transport links. However, if you prefer to stay off the beaten path and don’t mind driving, then this is the ideal place to stay.

Where to Stay for a Short Visit: Nevşehir

If you don’t have long to spend in Cappadocia, you’ll probably want to stay near the airport . There are four cities in Cappadocia, but Nevşehir is the main one people stay in as it’s where the airport is located.

Even though it’s a city, is not that big and is just as stunning as the small towns in Cappadocia. You’ll find plenty of cave hotels in Nevishir and the red and green tour , and blue tour , all pick up from this area.

I absolutely loved this hotel! It has such a homely vibe and a beautiful yard. The rooms were very warm which made the stay even more comfortable. They were very pretty, functional and clean. The bathroom had everything thats necessary, I especially loved the big bath. I would totally recommend staying here!

Exceptional. A cave with Al the amenities. Excellent exteriors and patio. A very ethnic vibe.. Cozy and Home like feeling. The interior designing is exceptional. Breakfast was good. The staff was excellent,l. Especially the lady at the reception. It’s a shame I don’t have her name to Mention here, but was well informed, knew what she was talking about, very pleasant, courteous and customer friendly and all their staff were efficient too.

The location was so great. We loved waking up to see balloons from our window and from breakfast. Breakfast was great, with a good selection. Their coffee was great too. The hotel is so nice and the room was big enough for a family of five. Parking is limited but we always found a spot.

The interior designing. felt like an actual cave and the amenities

The structure was amazing like living in caves, I believe that in entire Cappadocia, the rock type formation age volcanos was carved to make it habitable…and it’s exceptional. It has a terrace to have 360deg view..it’s lovely.

Very nice hotel. Comfortable. Right in the center. Breakfast. Staff. Beautiful view from terrace

Excellent location. Friendly staff, very good facilities

WONDERFUL STAFF! WONDERFUL STAY!! I felt sick the day I checked out, and they let me rest in another room until I felt better. Very kind and caring staff. I would highly recommend staying here!!!! The room was very pretty and the breakfast was nice

The owners, Angela and Yasar, and all staff - especially Suna and the kitchen staff of Century Cave Hotel made our stay perfect! Their arrangements for our requested tour bookings were efficient as well. Breakfast spreads were ample and has variety. Century Cave Hotel has its wide terrace with a great view of the hot air balloons early morning flight. Kapadokya's cave hotel area has cobble stone and natural ground roads and this is a non-issue for us. We were able to relax and enjoyed exploring-- as intended-- in our 4-day stay in Century.
