Summer Safari Nights 2024

Saturday, may 25, 2024 — saturday, august 10, 2024 6:00 pm — 8:00 pm, beat the heat and explore the outdoors with reid park zoo’s summer safari nights on saturday evenings .

Come to Summer Safari Nights, Presented by TMC Health  and enjoy the Zoo in the cooler evening hours! Each week will feature keeper chats, animal encounters, artifact stations, giraffe feedings, carousel rides, crafts and games. Face painting and glitter tattoos will be available for purchase. Refresh with dinner and a cold drink at the Flamingo Grill, listen to live music by some of Tucson’s best bands. Take a ride on the Cox Jungle Carousel, and play games with Tucson Parks and Recreation’s ‘Ready, Set, Rec!’ There will be a different theme each week, so every visit brings something new and plenty of photo opportunities to remember a great evening.

We’re not a zoo

• Port Lympne Reserve is a breeding sanctuary for rare and endangered animals and wherever possible we aim to send animals born here to protected areas of their natural habitat where they can live free – just as they should be.
• We always make sure that the animals come first, from enclosure design to diet, no expense is spared. We grow our own herbs and vegetables and source our meat from trustworthy suppliers.
• We design our enclosures with the animals in mind, so there’s lots of natural foliage and furniture to provide shelter and camouflage.
• We never lock our animals into viewing areas, so, just like in the wild, it may take some time to spot certain animals.
• We do our best to provide a fantastic visitor experience, whilst not forgetting the primary reason we’re here – to ensure the survival of endangered animals.

TRIPADVISOR An unbelievable experience We were all amazed at just how good this place is. We stayed in the hotel for two nights so got two full days in the park. Everything is so well organised and the safari drives are brilliant. You get to see so many animals close up. We have been to a South African safari and we saw more animals here than we did there. Safari Park welcomes first chimpanzee in eight years

A safari park has welcomed a chimpanzee into its resident troop for the first time in eight years.

Visitors to Blair Drummond Safari Park can now see Peter, a 31-year-old male, who arrived in February.

He was transferred to Blair Drummond near Stirling from Twycross Zoo in Leicestershire on February 29.

He had been living alongside another male chimp, Tommy, before the move was recommended by the European Endangered Species Breeding Programme, as it is hoped his relocation will allow Tommy to re-integrate with Twycross’s breeding troop.

For the past few weeks Peter has been settling into his new home and on April 4 he was introduced to Blair Drummond’s resident male, Chippie.

The park said this was carefully planned as introducing chimps can be a complex process requiring patience and strict safety protocols.

Chimpanzee team leader Alasdair Gillies said: “Introducing Peter and Chippie for the first time was naturally quite nerve-wracking.

“Thankfully, this went very well, and the two boys quickly engaged in playing behaviours. Chippie was born here 37 years ago and had never actually met another male chimp.

“However, he’s always been very playful, and we were hopeful that he would enjoy finally having a male friend to play with. Happily, this appears to be the case.

“Peter has also since been introduced to our female chimp, Gill, and the troop now have unrestricted contact with each other.

“We’re delighted that Peter has integrated so well and are certain he will enhance the dynamics of our troop.”

Keeper Georgie Taylor described Peter as “really thoughtful and clever”.

She added: “He’s always watching everything around him and is quite talkative too. He’s not shy about telling us exactly what he wants.

“He’s a brilliant climber and a star in his daily training sessions. We’ve had to earn his trust but now he knows us better, he’s full of character.”

The safari park said all species of chimp are now considered to be endangered in the wild, due to a range of threats including habitat loss, disease and the illegal wildlife trade.

They are also still widely poached for their meat and at risk from warfare across the regions in which they live.

Japan Zoo Discovers Male Resident Hippo Is Actually a Female After 7 Years

"We recognize the importance of reconfirming the sex of introduced animals, and will take precautions to ensure that this does not happen again," said the zoo

A zoo in Japan has learned a new critical detail about one of its resident hippos — its sex.

The Osaka Tennoji Zoo revealed on its website that Gen-chan, a hippo taken in as a male from Mexico's Africam Safari in 2017 at age 5, is actually a female.

According to the zoo, Mexican zoo officials told them Gen-chan was a male when they took him in, and "the documents required for import also indicated that it was a male."

While they initially had "no doubts" about Gen-chan's sex, they recalled noticing that the animal never displayed "male-specific behaviors" as it grew older.

According to the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance Library's website , typical behaviors of male hippos include "jaw-to-jaw sparring and yawning contests at adolescence" and being "territorial" in water.

Being that Gen-chan's reproductive organs are also not able to be "visually confirmed," the zoo opted for Gen-chan to undergo DNA testing by an outside institution.

"Based on this result, we recognize the importance of reconfirming the sex of introduced animals, and will take precautions to ensure that this does not happen again. We will continue to strive to provide a comfortable environment for Gen-chan, so we hope that you will continue to come and see Gen-chan," the zoo added.

On the other side of the world, another beloved zoo also recently announced news about one of its resident hippos.

"We have some very sad and difficult news to share," Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo announced in a post on its website on Wednesday, April 24.

"We will soon say goodbye to our beloved hippopotamus Water Lily, who has experienced declining health and quality of life following a cancer diagnosis last month. Veterinarians and caretakers have made a difficult end-of-life decision for the 45-year-old hippo, affectionately known as Lily, who will be humanely euthanized early next week," the zoo wrote.

Weight : Participants must weigh between 60 and 300 pounds and fit comfortably in the harness.

Height:   All participants must meet the minimum height requirement of 48” tall.

Footwear : Secure, closed-toed shoes are required.

Other Considerations : No alcohol may be consumed by a participant prior to taking a Flightline Safari.

Additional Considerations: Guests must be able to climb and descend stairs without assistance. Accommodations can be made with 24 hour notice minimum. Please contact Reservations Sales at 619-718-3000 for options. 

Change/Cancellation : Reservations may be changed up to 5 days before the program and will be subject to a $15 Administrative Change Fee. Less than 5 days, changes not permitted. Cancellations received 5 days before scheduled program are subject to a $25 Cancellation Fee. Less than 5 days, payment is non-refundable. 



Deluxe Flightline Safari

The Deluxe Flightline Safari experience includes all the excitement of the original Flightline Safari, plus an extended tour through the Safari Park to view additional wildlife by Safari truck. After the tour, you'll arrive at the take-off deck, where you will “fly” approximately two-thirds of a mile over savanna habitats before landing safely near our Roar & Snore campground.

Are you ready to soar?

• 1 hour, including training session and test flight. Times vary.

Adult/Child Ratio:  Maximum of 3 children ages 8 to 15 per adult.

Soar Above It All!

Flightline Safari is the ultimate recreational experience for those looking for excitement. Secure and comfortable in your harness, you will soar as high as 130 feet above the ground, with a spectacular bird’s-eye view of rhinos, giraffes, and other wildlife in the savanna habitats below you.

The Flightline experience includes the use of safety equipment, an orientation, a brief interpretive tour, and a flight on our two zip lines. First, the Fledgling run prepares you for your ultimate Flightline experience. Once “fledged,” you will be taken by Safari truck to the final launch platform. You will experience breathtaking views of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and its expansive savanna habitats below as you “fly” approximately two-thirds of a mile, landing safely near our Roar & Snore campground.
