Tata’s long-awaited Safari update, the Safari Storme, hits the roads. We take it out for a spin.

When you first look at the new Safari Storme, you are immediately struck by how, even 14 years after its launch, Tata seems to have made barely any changes to the exterior. Alterations to the nose and rear suggest that it’s not much more than a facelift. However, that misconception gets blown to dust the moment you drive it. Once you’re behind the wheel, you realise just how much of an improvement the new Storme is over the previous Safari. It feels better built, it’s far more refined, it rides really well and the interior too feels a generation ahead.
The most obvious changes are to the front, where the slim, wide grille (capped with a thick chrome strip) undercuts the sharp-looking headlights in a nice, stylistic touch. Move to the side however and the Storme looks exactly like the old Safari. New cladding for the doors and wheel arches can’t hide the fact that the glass house is identical, the doors are similar and the A, B and C pillars are the same as well.
At the back, the tailgate-mounted spare wheel has now been moved under the floor. The result is a cleaner rear profile with a new set of tail-lights.
On the inside, the overall improvement in quality all around is immediately evident and almost nothing of the old car is carried over. The chrome door handles and leather seats add a touch of luxury, as do small details like the chrome on the gearlever and the flock lining in the glovebox.
Just like the previous generation Safari, the Storme has excellent seat comfort and, once you haul yourself in, you are rewarded with a commanding seating position and a delightfully spacious and airy cabin. The front seats are large and very well bolstered, whilst the rear bench is supportive too.
In stark contrast, the third row is far from comfortable or practical. The tiny, foldable jump seats are only useable on short journeys, at best.
On the mechanical front, the Safari Storme uses an updated version of the 138bhp Dicor motor, which Tata now calls VariCor, because of the use of a variable geometry turbo. This 2.2-litre common-rail, direct-injection motor uses double overhead cams, hydraulic valve adjusters and sixteen valves to breathe better.
The overall level of refinement is much better now with an engine that is quieter throughout its rev range, and a cabin that feels particularly well insulated from the outside.
Tata engineers have managed to shave around 75 kg off the old car thanks to a lighter chassis, but this hulking two-tonne SUV is a bit lethargic off the line; a result of its weight and lack of low-end torque. You need to keep the engine above 1800rpm, after which the Storme picks up the pace with a fair amount of enthusiasm. The mid-range is quite punchy and cruising is quite effortless, which suits the Safari’s role as a long-distance cruiser.
The clutch is reasonably light and the gearbox has been improved with shorter throws, but the shift still feels a bit soggy and vague.
The Storme sits on a shortened version of the Aria’s hydroformed X2 chassis and maintains the previous Safari’s 2650mm wheelbase. As a result, the Storme’s chassis is approximately 50 percent stiffer and 35kg lighter than the old Safari’s outdated ladder frame.
The ride comfort is simply fantastic. The Storme coasts over bumps and broken roads like a freight train, flattening out even the largest of potholes. The suspension, also carried over from the Aria, is on the softer side, and hence there’s a fair amount of pitching and heaving over uneven surfaces.
The Storme retains the old Safari’s comprehensive four-wheel-drive system that includes a low range and a limited-slip differential. The system is easily engaged by using a central console-mounted dial and this allows the big Tata to tackle medium to difficult sections.
The new Safari Storme comes equipped with features like ABS, remote locking and an audio system with Bluetooth connectivity standard across the range. In fact, the Rs 9.95 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) that Tata is asking for the base Storme LX may be considerably more than the old LX, but the equipment is on par, if not better than, the old mid-level EX.
Unusually, the top-end VX versions (Rs 12.5 lakh for the 4x2) no longer get the reversing camera (there’s just parking sensors) or DVD player as they did before.
The Safari Storme, then, comes across as a quantum leap ahead of the previous Safari. It’s well-equipped, refined, better built and comprehensively updated. And with prices starting from Rs 9.9 lakh for the base 4x2 model and going to Rs 13.7 lakh for the fully loaded 4x4 option, it’s great value for money. Also, as a long-distance cruiser, nothing can quite beat it for the money. The only grouse is that, even after 14 years, Tata hasn’t got around to changing the ageing body completely.

Tata Safari Storme (2020) Review
In the year 1998, we got our first home grown SUV known as Tata Safari. It was the first SUV which was entirely designed, developed and manufactured in India. Cars like Scorpio were the follower of this beast which was the ruler of its segment. Safari has gone under some changes with some facelifts which have kept it alive but now the competition has increased. With new competitors like Mahindra XUV500 and many others, Safari looks a bit aged and needs a serious up gradation. Tata knows it and they are ready with the second generation of their legend known as Safari Storme. Tata displayed it for the first time at Delhi Auto Expo 2012 and launched it on 17th October, 2012 in Indian car market.
Tata Safari Storme looks visually identical to its previous generation. That may or may not work in the favour of this car. May be Tata is hoping to hold the loyal buyers of Safari who like its current styling and they have decided not to play much with its basic design but looking at the new competitors, it doesn’t mange to impress you instantly, it will take you time to accept the new changes. The shape and size of the new car has not changed much. One can easily figure out that it’s a Safari. The new safari shares its platform with its elder sibling Aria which is lighter and well-built than its earlier chassis. It retains the same wheelbase of 2650mm. There are eye catching changes made to the face of this car. Gone are the old, square shaped headlights and now gets replaced with more angular and edgy projector headlights.
Bumper grille is all black in color with massive, elongated chrome bar just above it which looks premium on this car. The new bumper has leaner air dam and new round shaped fog lights with chrome surrounds. There are noticeable lines on the front bumper and the new Safari looks much more aerodynamic than before. The side of the car receives minor changes including new body colored side cladding, door handles and side mirrors with inbuilt turn indicators. There is a new wider door step fitted in this car. It also has new silver colored roof rails with 16 inch alloy wheels which along with bulgy wheel arches makes it look sporty. The rear of this car is a big disappointment. It takes away the macho character of this car.
The car stands vertically tall and looks like any other van or MUV. Spare wheel goes missing from its boot gate which earlier used to be the hall mark of this car. There are new revised clear lens taillights which look down market. Its revised rear bumper now houses two round shaped chrome surrounds for exhaust pipe which looks sporty with new reflective lights. Other changes include new body colored rear spoiler with a stretched chrome bar just above the number plate. The overall designing is just acceptable of this new Safari as the fit and finish is much better than before but it certainly disappoints you in terms of styling as we expected a lot more than what Tata has offered.
The fit and finish and the plastic quality inside Safari has always been a matter of concern. Finally with the new Safari Storme, Tata tries to get rid of this problem. Similar to its platform, Safari begs the interiors from Aria which now feels much plush and satisfactory than before. It has all beige interiors with high quality of fabrics and plastics inside. The car feels much better than Scorpio but loses out to XUV 500 which feels a class apart from inside. The three spoke steering wheel and gear knob makes their way from the Aria and comes wrapped in leather. Its instrument dials are easily readable with white background light. Some of the buttons and plastic feels even better than Aria and we are sure this time it won’t be criticize much for its quality of interiors.
Comfort and Convenience
When it comes to comfort there is no one better than Safari in its segment. Be it driver or passengers it pleases everyone with its generous space and comfort. The seats are of high quality and give you the best comfort. High seating of Safari Storme allows the driver to get the perfect view of road and it makes hatchbacks looks as tiny as possible. The rear bench of Safari Storme provides sofa like comfort to back passengers with enormous amount of legroom and shoulder room. There is no place inside Safari where you can say that space and comfort could have been better.
There are many features in Safari Storme for you convenience which includes powerful AC with automatic climate control and rear AC vents. It features power windows and electrically adjustable and fold-able side mirrors. There are individual armrests for front and rear passengers. Central locking, rear defogger with timer and some standard features are expected in this car.
Dashboard and Storage
Music system.
Tata Safari Storme sports a single DIN audio system which is a let-down at this price. Sadly, Tata Motors has finally provided steering mounted audio controls, which are a boon while driving in city.
Engine and Gearbox
Tata Safari Storme is powered by a 2.2L VariCOR diesel engine. This engine is still one of the most powerful engines in its segment. It currently powers the old Safari and new Aria. It is the only engine option in this car following BSIV emissions. However, Tata has tweaked this engine especially for this new car to make it more responsive and fun to drive. The power and torque output of this engine remains the same.
Perhaps it produces a peak power of 148 bhp at 4000 rpm with maximum torque output of 320 Nm which starts coming at 1700 rpm and keep on coming till 2700 rpm. This engine surely beats up the engine used in Scorpio in terms of specifications but the mHawk engine with Variable geometry turbocharger used in XUV500 seems to be more powerful than this engine on papers. Safari Storme is equipped with Five-speed manual gearbox and there are chances that Tata will launch an automatic variant of this car.
Acceleration and Performance
This department matters the most when you buy these cars because their performance on road often speaks for the person sitting inside. Safari has always been a performer and the next gen Safari is expected to continue this legacy. Thanks to the new platform, new Safari is lighter in weight which has improved its power to weight ratio. This engine has been criticized for its refinement level and noisy behaviour but after retuning of this engine, Tata expects it will be appreciated this time.
This motor starts pulling up power as early as 1700 rpm and gives you a brilliant power delivery till 2700 rpm. Minimal turbo lag has been a USP of this engine and with altered gear ratios things will get better in future. The short gear ratios confirm you a stress free ride in city traffic as it avoids frequent gear shifting and you never run short of power. New Tata Sasari Storme makes less noise and vibrations thanks to the dual mass fly wheel system which it borrows from elder sibling Aria. New Safari Storme has a short gear lever to choose between 4 wheel and two wheel drive, similar to its previous model.
Earlier also, Safari’s off road drive has been applauded in comparison to its on road drive. New Storme has a separate transfer case for 4 wheel drive which has short ratios to make it a perfect off roader. New safari is expected to reach 100km/hour in less than 15 seconds due to its lightweight and may cross the top speed of 150km/hour.
With rising fuel prices, fuel efficiency has become an important criterion of selection for many buyers. Competitors like Scorpio and XUV500 are very economical and it was a big challenge for Tata to make Storme a fuel efficient car. Yes, Storme is lighter than before but it is still heavier than others like XUV500. It may possibly manage to give you a fuel efficiency of around 10km/ltr in city and 14km/ltr on highways.
Ride and Handling
New Safari Storme feels better than current Safari in this area; thanks to its new body frame and suspension system which it shares with Aria. The new power steering also reduces it turning radius from 6m to 5.6m which acts as a boon for this car. The new Safari is more easy to use in city traffic and it won’t take much of your bicep power to park it in tight spaces as new steering responses really well and feels compatible with this car.
With a ground clearance of 200mm, R16 size of tyres and four wheel drive system, you are ready for almost everything that comes in your way on and off road. The car offers a plush and comfortable ride due to its all new suspension which has double wishbone and McPherson struts in them. It easily passes through all the big potholes and ends up giving you a ride to remember.
Braking and Safety Features
Tata offers disk brakes all around in the new Safari Storme. For making accurate braking, this beast features ABS with EBD and brake assist. Many other safety features are there which includes 2 SRS airbags, Electronic Stability Program and traction control for better grip while off roading.
Tata Safari Storme is available in seven shades: Urban Bronze, Astern Black, Pearl Champagne, Sardinia Red, Pearl White, Arctic White and Arctic Silver.
Tata has placed the new Safari Storme between the current generation of Safari and their premium SUV Aria. At this place, it is more expensive than Scorpio and dares to challenge Mahindra XUV500 which shook the market and set new records of success. It feels a generation ahead of Safari Storme in terms of styling. We think Tata took a long time to reveal this new car as after seeing XUV500, we are afraid how people many will opt for this car.

Moscow to have ‘rolling electricity blackouts’ (Image: Getty)
Vladimir Putin has reportedly ordered rolling energy blackouts across Moscow as temperatures reach – 22C. The blackouts are said to cover the entire Moscow metropolitan area which has a total population of around 22 million. The order issued states that electricity is “not to exceed 12 hours per day” with the blackouts in place from January 14 through March 31 2024, according to Ukraine commentator Igor Sushko.
Sushko posted on X: “The entire Moscow metropolitan area, population 22 million, will have rolling blackouts of electricity “not to exceed 12 hours per day” from January 14 through March 31, 2024. – announced by the fascist state.”
It comes after a heating main ruptured at the Klimovsk Specialised Ammunition Plant in Podolsk, about 30 miles south of central Moscow, on January 4. As a result, tens of thousands of Russians are said to be without heat in their homes in the Moscow region due to subzero temperatures.
According to a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and circulated on various social media platforms, the affected areas include cities such as Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Podolsk, Chekhov, Naro-Fominsk, and Podolsk.
Residents in Moscow, specifically Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky, and Selyatino, are also experiencing power outages, according to other Russian media reports.
Power outages have been reported in St. Petersburg, Rostov, Volgograd, Voronezh, and Primorsky. Meanwhile, a huge fire t ore through a large warehouse used by Russia ’s largest online retailer south of St Petersburg on Saturday morning.
The blaze covered an area of 70,000 square meters, with 50,000 square meters of the Wildberries warehouse collapsing, according to Russia ’s Emergency Situations Ministry. No casualties were reported.
Videos posted to social media appeared to show employees running down fire escapes and fleeing the scene. A video shot from a passenger jet flying nearby showed flames totally engulfing the warehouse, sending huge plumes of smoke into the sky.

Putin: We can better destroy our own grid ourselves…………………………………………………
And the hoarde just follows like blind idiots.
Vote for putler. He will cut your electricity bills for you.
12 hour a day blackouts for 10 weeks? Of course it will be back to normal a few days before the fake election. Perhaps we should send some drones to the north east and give them some of their own medicine….
What wonderful news. How many warmonger morons that are freezing their asses off and sitting in the dark are still for war? Instead of fixing the broken country, the idiots wage an expensive war.
You can bet your life that the area the siloviki live won’t suffer any power cuts.
Of course, not.
They still have warm feelings about killing Ukrainians and stealing their children. That should hold them over…..
they could always go to the front if they’re cold, it gets a bit hot there with the occasional blinding flash of light.

Engine & Transmission
Timely services will keep a motor efficient and in top shape.
The official title given by the manufacturer in terms of the name of the engine, the displacement and the number of cylinders.
A bigger displacement and more than four-cylinders generally indicate a performance-oriented engine.
All cars in India either run on petrol, diesel, CNG, LPG or electric power.
Gives a good idea of the performance of the vehicle under full thrust. A higher figure here usually means a higher top speed as well.
Higher the power, the peppier the engine but it can also affect fuel economy.
Relates to in-gear acceleration. A higher figure here means better roll-on acceleration, fewer gear shifts, and possibly better fuel efficiency.
The more torque at low RPM range makes the engine feel more responsive. It also allows the engine to run smoothly without too many gear changes.
This is the maximum fuel efficiency that an engine gives. All numbers are provided by the manufacturer based on tests conducted and specified by the standards of the ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India)
Such fuel efficiency attained while driving in special conditions makes it unlikely to get it in real-world conditions
Cars come with different drivetrain configurations depending on the segment.
Front-wheel drive (FWD) is most common in mainstream cars while expensive cars or SUVs come with rear-wheel drive (RWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD).
Type of transmission used to transfer power from the engine to the wheels
A manually operated transmission is the most popular type, thanks to its simplicity and low cost. Varied types of automatic transmissions are also available.
Manufacturers today offer turbochargers to boost engine power without affecting its fuel economy. Superchargers are found in more expensive cars but on the downside, they are not very efficient.
Turbochargers are more effective but require plenty of heat management. Superchargers, meanwhile, offer linear bump in power but they are comparatively more complex.
Dimensions & Weight
The length of the car decides its segment. In India, cars that are less than 4 metres in length enjoy reduced excise duties.
