Excluding claims for injunctive or other equitable relief, for all other claims related to the Website, including any goods or services purchased through the Website, any dispute or controversy arising out of or relating to this Agreement, including without limitation, any and all disputes, claims (whether in tort, contract, statutory or otherwise) or disagreements concerning the existence, breach, interpretation, application or termination of this Agreement shall be resolved by final and binding arbitration pursuant to the Federal Arbitration Act and in accordance with the JAMS Inc. Comprehensive Arbitration Rules & Procedures then in effect. There shall be no right or authority for any claims to be arbitrated on a class action basis. The arbitration shall take place in Fairhope, Alabama or at the option of the party seeking relief, by telephone, online, or via written submissions alone; however such election shall not prohibit Company from attending such an arbitration in person. Said arbitration shall be administered by JAMS. The arbitral tribunal (“Tribunal”) shall be composed of one arbitrator, who shall be independent and impartial. If the parties fail to agree on the arbitrator within twenty (20) calendar days after the initiation of an arbitration hereunder, JAMS shall appoint the arbitrator. The arbitration shall be conducted in the English language. The decision of the arbitrator will be final and binding on the parties, subject to all rights of appeal allowed by JAMS. Judgment on any award(s) rendered by the arbitrator may be entered in any court having jurisdiction thereof. The arbitrator shall have the authority to determine arbitrability of any disputes arising out of or relating to this Agreement. Nothing in this Section shall prevent either party from seeking immediate injunctive relief from any court of competent jurisdiction, and any such request shall not be deemed incompatible with the agreement to arbitrate or a waiver of the right to arbitrate. The parties undertake to keep confidential all awards in their arbitration, together with all confidential information, all materials in the proceedings created for the purpose of the arbitration and all other documents produced by the other party in the proceedings and not otherwise in the public domain, save and to the extent that disclosure may be required of a party by legal duty, to protect or pursue a legal right or to enforce or challenge an award in legal proceedings before a court or other judicial authority. The arbitrator shall award all fees and expenses, including reasonable attorney’s fees, to the prevailing party. Any judgment rendered by the arbitrator may be entered in any court of competent jurisdiction.

You may choose to opt out of the agreement to arbitrate by mailing a written opt-out notice (“Notice”) to Company. The Notice must be postmarked no later than thirty (30) days after the date you accept these T&C for the first time. The Notice must be mailed to: Trawick International, Inc., Post Office Box 2284 Fairhope, Alabama USA 36533, to the attention of General Counsel. This procedure is the only mechanism by which you can opt out of the agreement to arbitrate. Opting out of the agreement to arbitrate has no effect on any other parts of this Agreement, or any previous or future arbitration agreements that you have entered into with Company or its affiliates.

11 Better Ways To Say “Safe Travels”

“Safe travels” is a polite way to wish somebody well on their upcoming journey. However, there are better ways to be polite and reassuring to your friends when they’re ready to go somewhere (often by plane). This article will share the best alternatives for such a case with you.

What Can I Say Instead Of “Safe Travels”?

There are plenty of ways to use “safe travels” in more exciting manners. You should check out one of the following:

  • Have a good flight
  • Happy landings
  • See you on the other side
  • Let me know when you arrive safely
  • Stay safe out there
  • Enjoy your trip
  • Have a relaxing time away
  • Happy travels

Better Ways To Say Safe Travels

The preferred version is “be safe” because it keeps it simple. It’s a common phrase we use when we want to wish someone well, and we don’t want them to come across any complications or dangers that might occur if they’re not “careful” enough.

“Be safe” is great to show we care about someone. It lets them know that we worry about them, and we want them to stay “safe” no matter what happens. It works regardless of the method of transport for the journey as well, which makes it a good general phrase.

It’s common for family members to use the phrase “ be safe ” when seeing each other off. This shows that there is a lot of love behind the phrase and that it works well to show how much you care about someone’s wellbeing.

Here are a few ways we might be able to use this phrase:

  • Be safe out there. I know you like to find trouble, but for once, I’d love it if you looked after yourself!
  • Be safe on your way out! I would love to hear from you and see the pictures of all the things you get up to.
  • Don’t forget to message me when you get there! Be safe, and I love you!

“Safe trip” is a simple phrase we can use to make sure someone knows we care. Using words like “safe” reminds people that we worry about them. Even if we are not physically there with them, we hope they are “safe” and do not get into trouble.

This phrase works well regardless of the trip that someone is taking. It could be a long-distance or a short-distance trip. Likewise, it could be by car, plane, boat, or something else entirely!

This phrase works in the following situations:

  • Safe trip, Yuri! I’ll miss you, but I know you’ll be thinking about me while you’re away.
  • Safe trip back to your hometown, then. Let me know when you get there safely.
  • Safe trip, old friend. I’ll see you again whenever you’re next in town!

Have A Good Flight

“Have a good flight” is appropriate to use when someone is going to get on a plane . We use “flight” here to be specific, which helps us to show that we know what someone is getting up to and what they’re likely going to expect from their journey.

We can use this phrase in the following ways:

  • Have a good flight! I’m sure you can get all the food and drink you want on there!
  • Have a good flight, and don’t forget to let me know when you land safely!
  • Have a good flight! There’s nothing to worry about, and you know it’ll all be okay!

Happy Landings

“Happy landings” specifically highlights the “landing” portion of a journey. It works well when someone is going on a plane, and we want them to be “happy” throughout the course of their journey.

Here are a few useful examples of how this one works:

  • Happy landings, fella! Don’t forget that they really like their tips out there when you’re dining out!
  • Happy landings, then! I’ll miss you every second, so I want you to send me all the photos you can!
  • Happy landings! Don’t forget to explore some of the local scenery!

See You On The Other Side

“See you on the other side” is an informal idiom that works well in many cases. We can do it when we know that someone will be returning to see us again soon. “The other side” indicates the place where we will be staying while they go on a journey.

Check out some of these examples to see how it looks:

  • See you on the other side, then! Have a great holiday!
  • Have a great time away, Fred! See you on the other side!
  • I’ll be here waiting for you as always! See you on the other side!

Let Me Know When You Arrive Safely

“Let me know when you arrive safely” is a calm way to let someone know that you are worried. When they arrive at their destination, we can ask them to “message” us to ease our minds and show us that they are thinking about us even after their journey.

We could also use a phrase like “text me when” instead of “let me know when.” If we want to be more specific about the manner of messaging, this phrase works just as well.

This phrase works well in the following ways:

  • Let me know when you arrive safely, please! You know how much I worry about you while I’m not around!
  • Text me when you arrive safely, please! I want to know just how much fun you’re getting up to.
  • Let me know when you arrive safely! I’ll miss you every second that you’re away.

Stay Safe Out There

“Stay safe out there” is a good way to show that you care about someone. “Stay safe” helps to let them know that you’ll be looking out for them and that you want them to explore, but in a reasonable way that won’t cause them harm.

We typically use this phrase when someone is going on a long-distance journey. “Out there” is a good indicator of that.

Check out some of these examples to see how it works:

  • Stay safe out there, then! I know you’ll make all the best choices while you’re away.
  • Stay safe out there! I’ll miss you, but I know you’ll be having an absolutely adoring time!
  • Stay safe out there. You never know what hijinx you might get into, so make sure you text me!

Enjoy Your Trip

“Enjoy your trip” is a simple way to show someone that you care. It helps to let them know that we want them to “enjoy” themselves. While trips can sometimes be boring (especially long-distance ones), we want people to feel like they can still have fun.

This simple phrase works as follows :

  • Enjoy your trip, Michael! Let me know when you arrive so we can discuss the adventure more!
  • Enjoy your trip! Don’t forget to immerse yourself in the local culture when you get there!
  • Enjoy your trip! I expect you to be fluent in German by the time you get back, okay?

Have A Relaxing Time Away

“Have a relaxing time away” works well in many cases. It’s most effective when we know that someone is inclined to worry (whether about the journey or the place they’re going). If we want to calm them down, this phrase works well.

These examples will help you make more sense of it:

  • Have a relaxing time away! Remember, you don’t need to worry about a thing when you get on that plane!
  • Have a relaxing time away! If anyone deserves it, it is most certainly you!
  • Have a relaxing time away! I’m going to miss you, but I know you’ll be back in no time!

Happy Travels

“Happy travels” works really well when we want people to feel “happy” on their journey. “Travels” can refer to any method of transport, but the idea is that they’ll be spending a long time getting from point A to point B, and we want them to feel “happy.”

Perhaps one of these examples will help you make more sense of it:

  • Happy travels, mate! I know you’ll love it over there in Australia, but you must tell me all about it.
  • Happy travels, Sue! I’ll miss you, so don’t forget to write to me every day about what you do.
  • Happy travels, Dan! Thank you for coming to see me again, and I’ll see you again soon, yeah?

“Bon voyage” is a great way to wish someone well before they go on an adventure. It’s French (and Italian), and it means “good journey.” It’s a commonly-used exclamation in English when we want to wish somebody well for something they’re going to do.

It’s also comforting because it shows that we do not wish any problems to come their way when they’re on their journey.

  • Bon voyage, my little friend! I’ll see you again when you return!
  • Bon voyage, then! I will miss you, but I hope you get a chance to text me a bunch when you get there!
  • Bon voyage! I love you so much, and I’ll definitely miss you while you’re away.

Traveling is ubiquitous in our lives. From day to day work commutes to going on a trip or vacation with our family or friends, we are constantly traveling. And we thank God that traveling has also been made easy. We can turn to many modes of transportation to bring us to our desired destinations. However, traveling still remains a stressful activity. We worry about safety, the sudden change in weather, missed flights, or lost luggage. The list of what can go wrong while traveling is endless and daunting. How and what can we do to deal when such a situation arises? We can turn to our God and say a quick prayer for safe travel.

Biblical characters like Noah ( Genesis 7:1-24 ), Abraham ( Genesis 12:1-20 , Genesis 13:1-18 ), and Moses ( Exodus 4:18-31 ) have also embarked on several epic journeys. They would have fervently prayed for a safe journey and blessings. Similarly, we should also pray each time we go on a trip. I personally believe that prayer for safe travel is a powerful thing to do before any trip. By praying, we are inviting God and trusting Him that He will get us to our destination, safe and sound. Here are some short prayers for travel that we can pray before traveling.

1. A Short Prayer for Safe Travel

Here is a short prayer for safe travel that you can say right before your trip.

Lord, I know that You watch my coming and going. Today, I pray for You to watch over me as I travel. Keep me safe in Your loving arms. Let no harm come upon me during my trip and cover me under Your mighty wings. As I step out and start on my journey, I will choose to trust you and not give in to fear. Help me get to my destination and get home safely. Help me to experience Your greatness and love during this trip so that I may draw even closer to You. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.

Psalm 121:7-8 The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever.

How to Actually Stay Safe While Traveling

Being able to wish someone safe travels is great, but there’s even better value in being able to tell them  how to  travel safely. Here are a few things you can do, or even remind those you love to do, before traveling.

  • Copy all important documents, like passports, and send email copies to yourself . This way, if anything is lost, you have a fail-safe to access and replace that information.
  • Take out enough cash to last 1-2 days in the destination you’re traveling to, but not more. A lot of people take their entire trip budget in cash, only to learn that they get hammered in currency exchange fees at the airport. You want to have cash in the destination currency when you land for cabs, groceries, and essentials in case you have issues with your credit and debit cards, but most ATMs overseas don’t charge fees. You’ll save money if you only take the cash you need .
  • Make sure someone has the contact information of where you’ll be staying. This is a truism that goes back decades, but traveling safely is about making sure someone can reach you in case of an emergency.
  • Safeguard your hotel room. If you want turn-down service, put your key valuables into a locked box or safe. Don’t just leave them out. We, of course, want to assume that hotel staff is honest, but there’s no reason to be on the short end of a poor assumption.
  • Be careful about WiFi. Make sure to pay bills online before you go, and try to avoid making online transactions over public WiFi when abroad. Networks that are unfamiliar to you shouldn’t see your personal information, and you’re at great risk when they do.

When you want to wish someone to have a journey that is completed without a problem you can say “Safe Travels”. Safe travel is ok but not commonly used.

Correct Ways to wish someone a safe journey:

  • Safe travels
  • Bon voyage
  • Travel safely
  • Drive safely
  • Have a safe trip
  • Have a nice trip
  • Have a safe journey

The reason we use safe travels is that we often associate travelling with many different trips and not just one trip.

Safe travel is ok to use but in modern English, it is just not common.

We often want to wish someone a nice journey but we know that we will see them again so we just want to wish them a journey that is safe from danger.

If you will not see the person for a long time then it is better to say goodbye. You can find many ways to say goodbye in this article here.

Travel safe or travel safely?

Travel safely is correct because in this case travel is a verb and to modify the verb we need to use the adverb “safely”

Can you say Safe trip or Safe journey?

Yes, you can say “Safe trip” or “Safe Journey” but we usually use “Have a….”.

John: I am leaving now, see you later!

Peter: Have a safe trip!

Peter: Have a safe journey!

Bon Voyage – Wait isn’t that French?

Yes, Bon Voyage is the French for Safe travels or literally “have a good trip”

It is common to use bon voyage in English because people are often going on a trip to a foreign country so people use it to sound more exotic.

safe travel voyage

Is it “Safe Travel” or “Safe Travels?” (Correct Grammar + Examples)

safe travel or safe travels

Is the correct phrase “safe travels” or “safe travel?” When telling someone that they should have a safe trip or a safe upcoming travel, does the word “travel” have an “s” letter or does it not have an “s” letter?

Learn the correct spelling of the phrase in this short American English guide.

Is it “safe travel” or “safe travels?”

The correct phrase is “safe travels,” with an “s” letter. The reason why this form is correct is that someone who is traveling would be doing so in the plural form. We would say have “safe travels” rather than a safe “travel.”

What to say instead of “safe travels”

Here are alternatives someone could say rather than saying “safe travels”:

  • Have a good trip.
  • See you soon.
  • Have a safe trip.
  • Have a wonderful journey.
  • Have a good time.
  • Bon voyage.

Can you say have a “safe journey?”

Yes. Having a “safe journey” is another way of telling someone that you wish their upcoming trip or travel be a safe one. A journey is sometimes referred to as travel, considering it is both an adventure and the act of arriving at a predetermined destination.

What does “bon voyage” mean?

Bon Voyage is a French term that means, “have a good trip.” It is common for “bon voyage” to get used in American English as a common phrase.

Safe travels or safe travel

The next time someone you know is traveling somewhere or going on a trip, you might want to wish them a safe journey without any problems. But, what is the correct expression for this? Is it “safe travels” or safe travel”?

Let’s take a look at the correct way to wish someone a safe journey.

Table of Contents

Safe travels or safe travel?

Both safe travels and safe travel are correct ways of wishing someone a safe journey. However, “safe travels” is much more commonly used.

Safe travels

The meaning of safe travels is to wish someone a safe journey and good fortune on their trip.

Safe travels implies that the person being spoken to is involved in some sort of extended traveling where there will be more than one “travel”. For example, they could be about to go traveling around South America or Asia. Alternatively, it implies that several travels or journeys will occur within a singular trip. Therefore, safe travels uses the countable form of the noun, because there is more than one travel.

Safe travel

Safe travel uses the uncountable form of the noun. It refers to all of the travels the person being spoken to might collectively make on a particular trip. Although you’ll rarely hear this used.

Travel safe, on the other hand, is a lot more common. This is a polite way of wishing someone a safe journey. It is a friendly imperative that is often used when seeing off friends or family before a trip and expresses that you hope they have a pleasant, uneventful journey.

When is the correct time to wish someone safe travels?

You can wish someone safe travels when you want to wish them a good, safe journey. This might be before they are going to teach English abroad, going on holiday, or if they’re embarking on a long trip home.

Other ways to say safe travels

There are also other ways to express safe travels, such as:

  • Travel safely.
  • Have a good trip.
  • Have a safe trip.
  • Have a safe journey.
  • Drive safe.
  • Bon voyage.

You can also say safe trip and safe journey, but we usually add “Have a..” in front of this.

What about bon voyage?

Yes, I know what you’re thinking, doesn’t Bon Voyage sound French? Well, yes, it is French and it literally means “safe journey” or “have a good trip”. It is one of a number of foreign words that are used in the English language.

Conclusion: Safe travels

So, until next time, I wish you safe travels! Best wishes for your onward journey through the English language .

Specifically for Kilimanjaro climbs, which continues to be one of our most popular travel experiences, safety is of utmost and, at times, life-saving importance. In addition to highest safety standards for our climbs , we have also contributed significantly to raising awareness for travelers and the entire Kilimanjaro industry through a wealth of content creation, such as our articles on altitude sickness and other safety-related topics , our interview with the founder of Kilimanjaro Search & Rescue , or our founder’s book Kilimanjaro Uncovered .

Fair Voyage Safety Standards for Kilimanjaro Climbs

Fair Voyage operates all Kilimanjaro climbs according to highest safety standards:

  • Experience and training of guides and mountain crew: All our guides have many years of experience and usually guided over one hundred groups and hundreds of climbers to the summit safely. We invest significantly in our guides, such that all our climbs are normally led by  Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certified guides (with limited exceptions only in case of uniquely tailored climbs with particular requirements on climber request and always shared transparently with you). Furthermore, our mountain crew undergoes regular safety training such as First Aid, CPR and COVID-19 safety procedures .
  • Fair treatment = alignment of interests: Because our mountain crew enjoys fair employment and working conditions, is well trained and love what they do, they only have your best interest in mind—to provide you with an enjoyable and safe experience. Your safety is their priority. Guiding you to the summit is their passion, bringing you back down safely is their mission.
  • Safety equipment: We carry customary safety equipment such as a pulse oximeter , emergency oxygen and a first aid kid on every single climb, as well as a Gamow bag if your climb involves an overnight stay at Crater Camp . We do not consider custom stretchers necessary for your safety because faster wheeled stretchers and porters are readily available on the mountain, but are happy to upgrade your climb with a custom stretcher for your comfort. Most importantly, our guides have the necessary training to use all equipment and interpret your pulse oximeter readings.
  • Daily safety checks and briefings: Our guides perform daily safety checks and record your measures (heart rate, blood oxygen, symptoms of altitude sickness and personal state) on your personal tracking sheet. Beyond the routine safety checks, our guides are constantly looking out for you and watching out for any signs of altitude sickness.
  • Setting the right pace:  Walking slowly is key to ascending safely and minimize the risks of altitude sickness . Athletic and ambitious climbers have the natural tendency to walk too fast. By keeping you to a slow and steady pace, making regular breaks, and reminding you to stay hydrated, our guides not only know but—more importantly—enforce what it takes to minimize your risks of altitude sickness.
  • Continuous safety checks while walking: Furthermore, Kilimanjaro climbers have the tendency to underplay when they are not feeling well because of a tendency to "be strong" and not complain, as well as forgetting in the thin air that descending safely is always more important than reaching the summit. Through observing your behavior, facial expressions and through casual dialogue, our guides are experts in detecting your true state and constantly watching out how well you are adjusting to the thin air. Nevertheless, it is also your responsibility to always be honest with your guide .
  • Safe guide-to-climber ratio: You will always have at least two guides for groups of two climbers or more, and at least one guide for every two climbers. This ensures that there are always enough guides to split the group when necessary, especially to assist climbers with descent when in their best interest, whilst allowing other climbers to proceed with their summit ascend.

How to Avoid the Dangers of Altitude Sickness When Climbing Kilimanjaro

Altitude sickness or acute mountain sickness (AMS) is the side effect caused by exposure to high altitudes. As a person reaches higher altitudes, the air contains less oxygen which begins to negatively affect the human body. Symptoms usually develop from around 2,500 meters of altitude.

First signs of altitude sickness include headache, nausea or shortness of breath. More severe symptoms include dry cough, fever, vomiting or retinal haemorrhage. Extreme cases can include fluid build up in the brain characterized by loss of coordination, confusion, inability to walk and even coma. If left untreated, AMS can be lethal .

Please read our article on avoiding the dangers of altitude sickness when climbing Kilimanjaro .

Other Safety Considerations When Climbing Kilimanjaro

Another condition with symptoms similar to altitude sickness and equally dangerous, though much less frequent in Kilimanjaro climbers, is hyponatremia. You can learn more on this directly from a personal trainer and marathon runner who shares her experience with severe hyponatremia whilst climbing Kilimanjaro here .

Advice on Staying Safe by Ivan Braun, Founder of Kilimanjaro Search & Rescue (KSAR)

Ivan Braun is the Founder of former Kilimanjaro Search & Rescue (KSAR), who used to be the leading helicopter evacuation service and high-altitude clinic for Mount Kilimanjaro.

Our Founder interviewed Ivan for you end 2019, and Ivan shared a ton of important and possibly life-saving advice to help you have a safe and enjoyable experience. Watch the entire interview or read a summary of Ivan’s advice here .

Note that KSAR ceased operations in 2020 and their services are no longer available. However, as Founder of KSAR, Ivan Braun arguably knew more about evacuations, altitude sickness and safety on Mount Kilimanjaro than anyone else, and his experience and advice shared in 2019 continues to be as valuable now as it was then.

During the pandemic, all our team members took the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) Safe Travels training, and many our partners around the world took a leading role in developing safe COVID-19 operating standards and protocols for the entire local tourism industry in our destinations.

Do I Still Need Travel Insurance?

In the interest of your physical and financial safety, it is essential and mandatory for all bookings made via Fair Voyage that you and anyone included in your booking be covered by insurance before setting out on holiday.

Your travel insurance must cover:

  • If you are undertaking a hazardous activity or travel to less accessible areas, your insurance must also cover this particular activity and emergency evacuations for your particular destination(s).
  • It is advisable and mandatory for all bookings made via Fair Voyage that you take out travel cancellation insurance as soon as your booking is confirmed or you make any payments for your trip (including flights or other payments that you may not be making to us) to cover your nonrefundable costs in case of cancellations or changes to your trip.
  • IMPORTANT: Verify that your insurance policy also covers known risks related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Always read your insurance terms and conditions carefully, to ensure that your particular event will be covered. If in doubt, verify coverage for the particularities of your trip and possible events with your insurance company.

Insurance included with credit cards is normally not sufficient for trips booked with Fair Voyage, due to limits on the maximum on insured amount, exception of potentially hazardous activities, exclusion of known risks related to the COVID-19 pandemic, and other customary limitations.

For your safety, all travelers booked with Fair Voyage must provide a copy of your insurance policy and emergency contact details before starting your trip, and you must carry your insurance details with you at all times during your trip.

By booking a Tour with Fair Voyage, you warrant that you have or will immediately take out adequate insurance coverage. Fair Voyage cannot accept any responsibility for financial loss or costs incurred by you that are outside of our control.

What Travel Insurance Do You Recommend?

The best insurance for your trip depends on your country of residence, your destination, and any high risk activities included in your trip (such as high altitude trekking or scuba diving). Furthermore, travel insurance terms and offers have been changing and continue to change frequently since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, it is important that you check insurance terms carefully for your particular circumstances and at your time of booking.

When booking a trip with Fair Voyage, check with your advisor for any recommendations specific for your destination or experience. However, note that travel agencies (including Fair Voyage) are not licensed to give you insurance advice, so it's best you also ask a duly licensed insurance broker in your country of residence to get personal insurance advice.

In general, however, we can recommend the following:

  • For travelers from Switzerland : We recommend you to check Europäische Reiseversicherung and Allianz , both of which offer policies that also cover risks related to COVID-19.
  • For travelers from the USA : We recommend you to check World Nomads as they updated their policies to cover risks related to COVID-19 for US travelers.
  • For travelers globally: Check if World Nomads also covers COVID-19 risk for your country of citizenship or residence. COVID-19 aside, their insurance usually offers comprehensive coverage at good prices.

March 27, 2024 - Baltimore Key Bridge collapse

By Kathleen Magramo , Antoinette Radford, Alisha Ebrahimji , Maureen Chowdhury , Elise Hammond , Tori B. Powell and Aditi Sangal , CNN

Our live coverage of the Baltimore bridge collapse has moved here .

Here's what you should know about the Key Bridge collapse

From CNN staff

A Marine Emergency Team boat passes the wreckage of the Dali cargo vessel in Baltimore on Tuesday.

Officials recovered the bodies of two construction workers who were on Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge when it collapsed early Tuesday morning after a 984-foot-long cargo ship collided into a pillar.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore called the collapse Wednesday " a global crisis ."

"The national economy and the world's economy depends on the Port of Baltimore. The port handles more cars and more farm equipment than any other port in the country," Moore said.

Here's what you should know:

  • The victims: The six people who are presumed dead were from Mexico Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, according to Col. Roland L. Butler Jr, the superintendent of Maryland State Police. Two bodies were recovered and have been identified as Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes from Mexico and Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera from Guatemala. The two workers were filling potholes on the bridge and were later found trapped in a red pickup truck in about 25 feet of water, Butler said. The FBI is handling notifying the victims' families, Butler said.
  • Recovery efforts: Authorities are pausing search efforts for the four other workers who are presumed dead, because additional vehicles are encased in concrete and other debris, making it unsafe for divers, Butler said. Once salvage operations clear the debris, divers will search for more remains, he said.
  • The investigation: The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the fatal incident, according to the agency's chair Jennifer Homendy. During a Wednesday news conference, Homendy said there were 21 crew members and two pilots on board the Dali cargo ship when it crashed into the bridge. She also said a senior NTSB hazmat investigator identified 56 containers of hazardous material, and that some containers are in the water. The agency received six hours of voyage data from the ship and the investigation could take 12 to 24 months to complete, Homendy said. She emphasized that NTSB will not analyze information collected or provide conclusions while on scene of the collapse.
  • Looking forward: Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said rebuilding the bridge will not be "quick or easy" but that it will get done. He said there are four main focus points ahead: reopening the port, dealing with supply chain issues until its reopening, rebuilding the bridge and dealing with traffic issues until the bridge is rebuilt. Biden  pledged the full support  of the federal government in the response and recovery efforts. His administration has already conveyed a sense of urgency to open up federal funding to remove debris and ultimately rebuild the bridge. Maryland has submitted a request to the Biden administration for emergency relief funds "to assist in our work going forward," Moore said Wednesday.

It's almost impossible to place people on the bow of ship due to the unstable structure, fire official says

 From CNN's Sarah Engel

Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace said Wednesday that the cargo ship's bridge structure and containers at the bow remain unstable.

"It's going to be very difficult, if not impossible, and very dangerous, to place people on the bow of that boat right now," Wallace told CNN's Kaitlan Collins.

"Naturally, we're still very cognizant of the fact that there are hazardous materials on board the vessel itself," Wallace said, alluding to the National Transportation Safety Board saying earlier that 56 containers were carrying hazardous materials.

Wallace said his team is relying heavily on aerial recognizance, including drones. "That's the only way we're able to see in," he said.

He added that the aerial surveillance has "been able to really assure us right now we have no [chemical] reactions on board."

"It's just utter devastation," NTSB chief says of the bridge collapse site

From CNN's Aditi Sangal

Jennifer Homendy, chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, called the site of the Key Bridge collapse "devastating."

"It's pretty devastating, certainly, seeing not just what's going on with the cargo containers, but just looking at what was a bridge span — three bridge spans that is pretty much gone. It's just utter devastation," she said at Wednesday evening's news briefing.

She added that she is thinking of families who lost loved ones and those who are waiting to reunite with their lived ones.

NTSB interviewed the Dali's captain and some other crew members today, agency chief says

The National Transportation Safety Board has interviewed the ship's captain, his mate, the chief engineer and one other engineer today, according to Chair Jennifer Homendy.

The two pilots on board the Dali at the time of collision will be interviewed tomorrow, she added.

Cargo ship's voyage data recorder is basic when compared to an airplane's, NTSB chair says

From CNN's Tori B. Powell

The voyage data recorder on the cargo ship Dali was a "newer model" but is considered basic when compared to that on an airplane, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.

"But it is very basic compared to say, a flight data recorder, where we would have 1,000 parameters," she said at a news conference on Wednesday.

The NTSB chief investigator Marcel Muise added:

"It's not a ship-wide system recorder, so most of the sensors that are being recorded are from the bridge. So things like GPS, the audio, rudder feedback, rudder commands are recorded on there. But not engineering, the temperature of each cylinder, power distribution sensors."

There were no tug boats with Dali at the time of the collision. That's normal, NTSB chief says

People look at the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge while visiting Fort McHenry in Baltimore on Wednesday.

There were no tugs with Dali when the cargo vessel collided with Baltimore's Key Bridge, which is normal protocol, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.

Remember: At 01:26:39 on Tuesday, Dali's pilot made a general very high frequency (VHF) radio call for tugs in the vicinity to assist, the NTSB investigator Marcel Muise had said.

"The tugs help the vessel leave the dock, leave the port and get into the main ship channel. And then they leave. Once it's on its way, it's a straight shot through the channel. So there are no tugs with the vessel at the time. So they were calling for tugs," she said.

NTSB chair says she saw some containers that were carrying hazardous materials in the water

National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy said she did see some of the 56 containers that were carrying hazardous materials in the water.

When asked how many

When asked how many containers of hazardous materials were in the water, Homendy said:

"I did see some containers in the water, and some breached significantly on the vessel itself," she said. "I don't have an exact number, but it's something that we can provide in an update."

Homendy said that a preliminary report should be out in two to four weeks.

This post has been updated with more quotes from Homendy.

Bridge did not have any redundancy, unlike the preferred method for building bridges today, NTSB chair says

Baltimore's Key Bridge did not have any redundancy, which is included in the preferred method of building bridges in the present day, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.

"The bridge is a fracture critical," she explained. "What that means is if a member fails that would likely cause a portion of, or the entire bridge, to collapse, there's no redundancy. The preferred method for building bridges today is that there is redundancy built in, whether that's transmitting loads to another member or some sort of structural redundancy. This bridge did not have redundancy," Homendy said.

There are 17,468 fracture critical bridges in the United States out of 615,000 bridges total, she said, citing the Federal Highway Administration.
