Scenic Boat Tours of Lake Powell

Why hire a tour take in the high contrast of lake powell's placid, cool blue waters and colorful warm shores without worrying about logistics..

Written By Austen Diamond

Can you say panoramic? Of course you can, and of course you live for that sort of thing — that’s why you’re visiting the lovely  Lake Powell . But can you say “panoramic” in five languages? While on one of the many Lake Powell boat tours offered from Wahweap Marina in Page, Arizona, (near  Horseshoe Bend  on the Colorado River and  Antelope Canyon ) you’ll have the option to hear an audio tour, with the included audio set, in one of five languages: English, German, French, Italian, and Japanese. So you might learn a thing or two (It’s “panoramica” in Italian, by the way).

Why hire a tour? Take in the high contrast of Lake Powell's placid, cool blue waters and colorful warm shores without worrying about maps or logistics. It's for boat lovers, lake lovers, sightseers and tourists from all over the world; it's for people who want to get on the water but don’t want to take all day for a boat tour and folks who don’t want to deal with the logistics or cost of renting their own boat. You’ll board a vessel with folks from all over the world to see the sites that the lake has to offer. The Panoramic Lake Powell Tour offered by ARAMARK at the Wahweap Marina is an excellent option, and heads across the state line to visit some of Utah’s majestic buttes only seen from the water.

A Grand and Relaxing Evening Tour

The Panoramic Lake Powell Tour takes you by a double-decker boat out to Gunsight Bay and back. This is an excellent option for those who don’t want to deal with the logistics of renting their own boat (or they can’t, for whatever reason) and would prefer to sit back and relax, and take in some views.

As you head out of the marina, you approach Castle Rock (get your cameras ready) and pass east through the Castle Rock Cut, which grants you quicker access to Utah and beyond. The audio set provides historical information about the Native Americans who once called this area home, about the first explorers of the Colorado River — like John Wesley Powell (the lake’s namesake) — and the eventual damming of the river that created this massive body of water and reservoir for the West. Enjoy some refreshments and a nice cool breeze as you coast across the water. While this tour doesn’t stop to let you out of the boat (some of the longer Lake Powell boat tours do), you will venture far and be able get close to the awe-inspiring natural wonders of canyon country. Note the “bathtub ring” which marks the lake’s high point at one time, and take panoramic photos once you reach Gunsight Bay. The boat then turns around, and you can take it all in again. This tour departs at 5 p.m. and returns at 7 p.m.; the two-hour duration is an ideal amount of time to get a softer sun and long, beautiful shadows from the area’s rock formations for your excellent pictures. It's also a good fit for road trips through the region with a  base camp to adventure  in Kanab, Utah.

On scenic boat tours of Lake Powell, enjoy the shimmering water under your boat and the glamorous red rock buttes as the wind rushes through your hair.

For longer visits to Lake Powell, see our  Glen Canyon National Recreation Area  page and  Rainbow Bridge National Monument .

(Once you're hooked on the Lake Powell by boat experience, you may want to return to volunteer for the National Park Service's  Trash Tracker Program , multi-day trips helping NPS keep the shores of the scenic reservoir clean.)

"The two-hour duration is an ideal amount of time to get a softer sun and long, beautiful shadows."

We booked a boat tour for the memorial weekend way ahead in advance. They were not doing the rainbow bridge tour and were only doing the Navajo tour. Since we had never visited either, we went ahead and took the Navajo boat tour. The boat tour as such is a good one with views of Glen canyon dam, the antelope canyons, and much more. The boat is pretty large and has a top deck with some gorgeous views. The kids totally had a ball going up and down the deck. There is not a whole lot of things on the tour but a good boat ride experience for sure.

I don't know why this isn't a 5-star tour!?! We were on the Navajo tour and it was stunning! We took a bottle of wine and enjoyed the views and history from the awesome captain! Must do!!!

Like being on another planet! Do not miss this tour! We went at 4:15 thinking light would be better for photos and it was. Even our cloudy, drizzly day couldn't ruin the trip.

As part of our organized national park tour it included a glimpse of Glen Canyon Dam and Antelope Canyon on the lake. We met at the resort lobby; then hiked down to the marina to board the boat. The water level is extremely low due to the drought. We toured for two hours round trip.

I really enjoyed my Lake Powell Boat Tour. It was a little difficult for me to find in terms of location. There was ample parking. You do have to pay to get inside the National Park. The boat was fairly large and could seat about 100 people. I had the impression it would be a much smaller vessel. Make sure you arrive 30 minutes prior to your scheduled departure time, in order to check it. The crew was friendly and informative. Audio headphones are given to explain the what, where, and why of this beautiful scenic boat tour. The ultimate goal is to get to rainbow bridge. It takes about 2 hours. It was breathtaking. I do recommend this tour. There is a bathroom on board. Prior to departure a souvenir photo is taken. Water and a few snacks are available at no charge. Given the length of the tour, I think lunch should be provided. Head on out to Lake Powell and enjoy the beauty that nature has to offer!

We took the Canyon Princess Dinner Cruise and was amazing. The staff went out of their way to make the dinner cruise spectacular, not only the view but the food as well. Runs Tuesdays and Saturdays only so keep that in mind. Compliments to the chef, whose birthday was June 9th!

Great time! It was a nice, long, relaxing trip! Get down to the dock first so you can get a spot on the top deck, there are only 35 people allowed on top, and you get the best views from the top! Bring warm clothes during spring! It's still cold, and windy! Beautiful! Well worth the price! I will always have amazing memories of this boat ride!

Staff was very polite but this was the longest 2 1/2 hour tour. All I can say is that it's boring. Half of the time was puttering on at no wake speed. When at full speed we probably were not going more than 10 mph. Nice scenery but again just bored. I looked around lower deck and found that several others were sleeping just like me.. It's a lot of money to pay for a nap.

Photo of Laurie H.

This was a great way to see the lake without renting our own boat. We took the Canyon Adventure trip- the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because of tourists who were allowed to stand for the whole trip in which made taking pictures hard. Maybe a policy they could consider is to let people know to stand in the back so they do not obscure the views. Still recommend it, it was a beautiful ride!

Photo of Delora B.

The Rainbow Bridge tour exceeded my expectations. It was well worth every penny and I'd return with friends and family who are new to the area. I do wish we were given more than 1.5 hours at the Bridge upon arrival, but it is a 100 mile round trip boat trip and took over 6 total hours.

Boat Tours on Lake Powell

Lake powell, az & ut.

If there’s one thing you must do at Lake Powell, it is be to see the iconic landscapes of beautiful canyons and rocky ridges that are so unique to this region. And there are a plethora of opportunities to do so. Kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, renting a motorboat or houseboat or pontoon boat, or—if it’s more your speed—a boat tour operated out of Lake Powell Resort.

There are five options for chartered boat experiences, and each have their benefits.

The Antelope Canyon Tour brings visitors to the south end of Lake Powell to explore the mesmerizing color palette of oranges, reds and browns that are typical of this region. Highlighted on the tour are famous slot canyons, and the Glen Canyon Dam, the second largest concrete arch dam in the country.

The Canyon Adventure Tour, as you’d expect, brings through the best canyons in Lake Powell, Antelope Canyon as well as Navajo Canyon, allowing passengers to see the towering sandstone geology as it rises over 600 feet into the sky above. In addition, get a glimpse of Glen Canyon dam, and the 50/50 wall, an enormous rock that is half in, half out of the water. The sight is spellbinding.

The Panoramic Lake Powell Tour brings passengers into the heart of the lake, immersing you into the widespread, beautiful landscapes of Lake Powell, including the rich scenery of Gunsight Bay, while learning about the geology and history of the region. This is the best way to get to the core of the Lake Powell experience.

The Rainbow Bridge Tour carries guests on a Lake cruise over 50 miles of beautiful shoreline and views, all leading up to an up close and personal experience with one of the largest natural land bridges in the world, the Rainbow Bridge Monument. This massive arch, over 290 feet high and crossing a 275 foot span of lake, is a stunning sight. And feeling the power of the wind and water that carved it firsthand is something you’ll never forget.

The Private Boat Tour is a smaller, more intimate tour that brings you and a group (max six people total) through the snaking waterways of Lost Eden, a narrow, flooded canyon. Hearing the calm quiet of the canyons (broken with the inevitable yell “ECHO!!”, and the reverberation that follows) and seeing the canyons jut up above your heads, makes this tour completely unique and awesome. Private Boat Tours are operated from Bullfrog Marina.

3-hour Navajo Canyon Boat Tour

We were picked up at the Lake Powell Resort lobby and transferred to a big jet-powered boat with a toilet and upper deck which was uncovered. When the boat moves fast, it can be rather cool. There were about 2 dozen people, and I heard that the boat was only a third full. There was complimentary coffee, lemonade, and water. We covered the Glen Canyon Dam, the Navajo Canyon where the tapestry wall was, and passed the Antelope Canyon. I wish there was more history in the narration. The lower deck has a cooling system. No food is available for sale.

scenic boat tour lake powell

We took the trip to Navajo Canyon with Captain Elaine and Captain Ursula. The two captains, both Navajo women, were terrific! Captain Elaine was the first Native American woman to receive a captain's license, according to Ursula, who related the information about the lake with humor and excellent storytelling. Very much enjoyed the trip. BTW, the young woman who assisted us at the desk at the resort was also knowledgeable and excellent at her job.

What a wonderful tour with amazing views from the boat! Captain Doug is a fantastic Captain! He’s been doing this for nearly 30 years and he knows the history and details to share in a fun way! Lots to learn! Very sad to see how much water they’ve lost, but you get to see the beautiful side views of the sand stone mountains and shapes that come alive for your view and pictures! Leave it to Captain Ursula to show you some pictures from her personal binder! History in the making!! You have a choice to sit and watch in comfort, or stand in the back or upstairs to get a 360 view. Captain Doug goes slow where he needs to allow you to take beautiful pictures, and a little faster to get to other parts! You cross to Utah as well! You can say you visited two states on a boat tour! After hiking around the canyons and to top of mountains, it sure is nice to get a view from below! Enjoy your trip!

We had The most enjoyable experience on our boat tour of Navajo Canyon. The tour captain Elaine and cocaptain for the day Ursula were very knowledgeable of the Canyon tour. We just got off an informative and amazing three hour Navajo Canyon boat tour on Lake Powel. Our captain Elaine (1st Native American Navajo to get her captains license) and Assistant Ursula are experts in steering the large boat. We were in good hands!! The crew is very upbeat and able to answer all the hard questions. They spoke about the history of the Lake as well as challenges of today. Our first time in the desert, they patiently explained how a canyon lake is different. We left feeling exhilarated and excited to have learned and seen so much. We also have a new respect for Lake Powel. Thank You!!

Lake Powell Boat Tours

Rainbow bridge national monument.

One of the natural wonders of the world, Rainbow Bridge has been formed by erosion of the sandstone by water flowing from Navajo Mountain towards the Colorado River. It is the largest natural bridge in the world at 290 feet/88 meters tall and 270 feet/83 meters across. Rainbow Bridge National Monument is considered sacred by the Navajo culture as a symbol of deities responsible for creating clouds, rainbows, and rain--the essence of life in the desert.

Rising up at the edge of Lake Powell, Rainbow Bridge may be reached by  private boat tour or power boat rental . Rainbow Bridge is located 50 boat miles northeast of Wahweap Marina. Lake Powell Resorts & Marinas, managed by Aramark Leisure, offers boat cruises daily from Wahweap Marina... tour offerings, schedules and pricing are listed below.

RAINBOW BRIDGE CRUISE

For tour questions, please call: 1(888)896-3829.

For those looking for a relaxing way to spend the entire day on Lake Powell and to experience the geologic and spiritual wonder of Rainbow Bridge, this tour offers you the opportunity to relax and take it all in. Your US Coast Guard licensed Captain and crew will host you as you skim along the smooth waters of Lake Powell, 50 miles up the original path of the Colorado River, from Wahweap Bay to Rainbow Bridge National Monument. En route, your crew will share with you, via public address system and personal discussions, many compelling stories rich in the cultural and natural history of this region. You will sail pass numerous famous landmarks, and witness first-hand the power of wind and water and their role in sculpting the remarkable landscape. The 3 hour up Lake Journey permits you time to explore why Glen Canyon is such a special place.

At Rainbow Bridge National Monument, you will walk a maintained, fairly easy trail round-trip 1.25-mile hike to Rainbow Bridge. The bridge itself reaches 290 feet into the sky, and it 270-foot span is supported on each side by its own canyon. While the bridge is visually amazing, your visit to the monument is also your opportunity to stand in the shadows of native peoples who have celebrated the spirit and sacredness of the place for centuries. You may wish to take the time to explore many of the meanings the monument has to share.

You will spend about 1 hour at the Bridge then make your return hike to the tour vessel. After departing, as your crew winds the vessel back through the canyons and waterways, you may hear more stories regarding this region's human and natural history.

While the tour returns to Wahweap via the same route, the homeward journey permits you to hear more of the crew's stories, spend time talking to others, relax and absorb for yourself the day's experience, or make your own additional discoveries as the vessel heads for port.

Canyon Adventure Boat Tour on Lake Powell

NAVAJO CANYON BOAT TOUR

Spend half of a day on Lake Powell exploring the richness of color found in this region by taking a tour of the Lake's "Navajo Tapestry". This tour leaves Wahweap Bay, following the original path of the mighty Colorado River to Navajo Canyon, located on the Navajo Nation.

During your journey to the side canyons, your US Coast Guard licensed crew will share with you, via public address system and personal discussions, many compelling stories rich in the cultural and natural history of this region. You will pass a number of famous landmarks, including Glen Canyon Dam.

Approximately four miles past the Dam your crew will point out the entrance to Antelope Canyon by water. This high-walled Navajo Sandstone side-arm of Lake Powell is famous for not only its coloration but also for its slot canyons, found at its head, about two miles east. During heavy summer rain, this canyon is known to experience flash flooding, due to its narrow width and high walls. Antelope Canyon has become a popular kayak destination !

You will sail another 6 miles up the lake to Navajo Canyon, an exciting example of "Navajo Tapestry", the mix of colors found on its sandstone walls. Deep purples, burnt reds & oranges, and shiny blues are created by a natural mineral process, resulting in a "tapestry" of visual experience. This special patina takes centuries to form and is in a constant state of change.

While the tour returns to Wahweap via the same route, the homeward journey permits you to hear more of the crew's stories, spend time talking with others, relax and absorb for yourself the day's experience, or make your own additional discoveries as the vessel heads for port.
