Shimba Hills National Reserve Destination Guide Kenya Destination Guide

The Shimba Hills National Reserve being only 60km from Mombasa, is ideal for a day visit. It contains one of the largest coastal forests in East Africa and is where a great diversity of Kenya's plant species are found, many of which are endangered. The Shimba Hills National Reserve is home to many Elephant, and is the only place in Kenya where tourists can see the Sable Antelope.

Shimba Hills National Reserve is 300 Km2 and protected by the Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS). The reserve is well known for its large elephant population, which in the early 2000’s became unsustainable. In 2005 KWS translocated over 150 elephants to Tsavo East National Park, it was described at the time as “the single largest translocation of animals ever undertaken since Noah’s ark”.

There are still over 500 elephants in the reserve, which causes tense human wildlife conflicts with the subsistence farmers in the area. To help reduce this conflict the Mwalunganje Elephant Sanctuary was established and shares a boundary with Shimba Hills National Reserve providing the elephants a migration corridor.

The Reserve is also known for its excellent birding opportunities and twitchers can search for the Croaking Cisticola or the Zanzibar Red Bishop. Due to the thick nature of the forest, game viewing is not as rewarding as on the savannahs, as many animals spend their time deep in the forest. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as it makes the wildlife encounters that you do have, that much more spectacular. The best time of day to go for a game drive would be in the late afternoon, when the cooler temperatures lure the animals out of the shade and seek water.

The magnificent 21 m high Sheldrick Falls are in Shimba Hills; the late David Sheldrick, founder of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, once explored this area, whilst flying over the area he discovered a hidden waterfall within the Shimba Hills National Reserve, and subsequently had the falls named after him.

From Mombasa or Diani Beach the road is good, it is about an hours drive from Diani Beach.

What to do in the Shimba Hills National Reserve - The Kenya Wildlife Service offers guided walks to the Sheldrick Falls - a great opportunity to see the birdlife in the forest. Game drives are more adventurous than on the savannahs as animals are harder to spot.

You can also go for sundowners on Pengo Hill, which faces west and watch the sun drop down below the horizon. On a clear day you can see the Tsavo Plains and Mt Kilimanjaro.

The Experience

The Shimba Hills National Reserve is perfectly situated for a day trip if you are staying in Mombasa or Diani Beach. The Reserve is characterised by rolling hills which are covered in coastal forests which forms an important plant biodiversity area; as over 50% of the 159 rare plants in Kenya are found here including rare cycads and stunning orchids.

The Reserve is home to the last breeding herd of Sable Antelope in Kenya and you should keep a lookout for these large ebony coloured antelope with their scimitar shaped horns.

Explore the reserve on guided game drives with a local tour operator. The roads are undulating and steep and a 4x4 vehicle is needed to navigate them. One of the most memorable activities on offer is a guided walk through the forest with a Kenyan Wildlife Service's Guide - who takes you through the forest to the beautiful Sheldrick Falls.

There are also some great hiking trails you can follow for a pleasant afternoon ramble to the picnic sites and lookout viewpoints. As there are both elephants and buffalo in the reserve it is highly recommended to hire a guide to walk with you, plus of course the guide can point out a multitude of animals and plants that you may otherwise miss.

Shimba Hills National Reserve safari | Travel guide

The Shimba Hills National Reserve is a small National Reserve in the former Coast Province of Kenya, 33 km from Mombasa and 15 km from the coast. The reserve is an area of coastal rainforest, woodland and grassland. 

Located just 60km from Mombasa, the reserve is ideal for a day visit and contains one of the largest coastal forests in East Africa. 

This is not a Big Five reserve, but several of the usual safari animals, as well as some interesting forest animals, can be found here including the Roosevelt’s sable, a stronghold for this rare subspecies of sable antelope.

A safari game drive can be very rewarding at Shimba Hills NR as it is the only place in Kenya you can see Sable Antelope and visitors can go on guided forest walks up to the scenically beautiful Sheldrick Falls. 

The reserve is also known for its herds of elephants and visitors can find the enthralling Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary with nearby scenic viewpoints and five picnic areas. 

Shimba Hills has a big population of elephants. They disappear easily into the forest and close-up sightings are not guaranteed, but an eagle’s eye view over the forest from one of the lookout points – especially Elephant Hill – often proves productive.

Other wildlife that can be found at Shimba Hills includes the endangered Sable Antelope, Giraffes, Leopard, Genet, Civet cat, Hyenas, Waterbuck, Bush pig, Buffalo, African Bush Baby, Bushbuck, Black and white Colobus and Blue Duiker. 

Also found here are the Red Duiker, Greater Galago,Black-faced Vervet Monkey, Sykes Monkey, Serval cat, Black and Red Shrew, and Knob-bristled Suni Shrew.

111 bird species have been recorded at Shimba Hills NR, of which 22 are coastal endemic among them are: Ostrich Eagle, African Hawk; Falcon, Cuckoo; Guinea-fowl, Kenya Crested; Honey guide, Greater; Hornbill, Crowned; Quail, Blue; Sunbird, Uluguru.

How to get to Shimba Hills National Reserve?

By plane .

Most people fly from Europe or North America to Kenya via Nairobi. Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) is located 15km/9mi southeast of Nairobi for visitors wondering how to get to Kenya .

Kenya’s second international airport is Moi International Airport (MBA), located 9km/6mi west of Mombasa. From Nairobi you can take a domestic flight to Mombasa or Diani, which can be your base for Shimba Hills.  A Kenya visa will most likely be required to enter the country.

Shimba Hills is an easy day trip from Mombasa, Diani Beach or any of the other beach resorts south of Mombasa. 

Many hotels in Mombasa or Diani offer day trips to Shimba Hills, or you could rent a vehicle for the day.

Temperatures are around 29°C/84°F in the afternoon. It cools down a bit at nighttime, but it’s still warm at around 20°C/68°F. 

Best time to go

Understanding the best time to visit Kenya is important as this will impact accommodation, flight prices, availability and the weather that visitors can expect on their safari vacation. A visit to Shimba Hills is usually best in the drier months from June to September and December to March. 

Health 

Shimba Hills lie in a malaria zone thus taking antimalarials is recommended. Other precautions are covering up at dusk and using mosquito repellent (those containing DEET are most effective).

Everything about Shimba Hills National Reserve  is unexpected – it’s one of the largest coastal rainforests in Africa. Just a short distance from the sunny Kenya coast, offshore breezes cool safari-goers in this small reserve of woodland and dense green forest. And then there is the unexpected animal life.

Shimba Hills is home to about 700 elephants, the greatest density of African elephants in the country. But just as unexpected are the park’s unique numbers of sable antelope – a magnificent creature found in no park in Kenya.

Of course, being a rainforest, you’ll encounter hundreds of species of birds, butterflies, and some larger wildlife like buffalo, Masai giraffe, monkeys, impala, waterbuck, and even an occasional leopard.

The Wildlife of this Forest

You’re sure to spot some of the many elephants inhabiting this compact park. Their numbers are almost unsustainable, so a sanctuary was established nearby for the elephants to find new areas in which to forage. The park also hosts about 100 big-horned sable antelope, the only place in Kenya you’ll find them.

And while you may not see Africa’s big cats here, you might spot the smaller serval, genet, or civet cats and other small carnivores like mongoose. As expected in a rainforest, the birdlife is rich and plentiful – over 230 species. In the thick woods and forests look for African hawks, fish eagles, falcons, hornbills, and guinea-fowls.

A Most Unusual Environment

Perched 400 m (1312 ft) above the coast near Mombasa and Diani Beach , the park is an easy visit from the Kenya coast and a cool, sometimes misty getaway. As befits a rainforest, Shimba Hills offers trekkers a refreshing world of waterfalls and rich plant life – many of Kenya’s rarest species are found here including endangered cycads and orchids.

Sharing this land flocked with distinctive acacia trees are the Maasai people, nomadic herders from whom the park takes its name. They construct traditional villages surrounding the reserve and live as they have for eons, herding their cattle and pushing back at an ever-encroaching modern world.

Known for their brightly colored shukas and deft beadwork, the Maasai are a living link to a past that stretches back beyond colonial Africa, to an era when the entire continent was wild and untouched.

Survey: Shimba Hills National Reserve

One of Kenya’s small parks at 320 sq km (123 sq mi), it is an equatorial rainforest with offshore breezes contributing to its cooler temperatures.

Location: Close to the coast, the reserve is just 30 km (18 mi) from the city of Mombasa. So near the beach resorts, it’s an easy one-day safari from the ocean.

Climate: In contrast with the hot, sunny coast, the climate is humid and misty. Expect temperatures of about 24 0 C (75 0 F).

When to go: Anytime during the year, the park is always open.

Best time to visit: As with many parks, the best wildlife viewing is during the dry season from June through October. Being a rainforest, there is some rain activity throughout the year but the heavier rains occur in April/May and during November.

“Paradise of the Sable antelope”

As one of the largest coastal forests in East Africa after Arabuko-Sokoke Forest, this reserve is rich in flora and fauna and hosts the highest density of African elephant in Kenya. Other animal species found in the area are Sable antelope, elephant shrew, bushy tailed mongoose and other small mammals like fruit bats. The forest is an important bird area and is endowed with forest birdlife while the grasslands hold localized species such as red-necked-Spur fowl, Croaking Cisticola and Zanzibar Red Bishop. The scenic Sheldrick Falls and the dense Mwaluganje Forest are also found here along with four campsites.

Shimba Hills National Reserve has exceptionally magnificent scenery and is the sole place in Kenya where you can come close up to the Sable Antelope. It is located about 60 km from Mombasa which makes it suitable for a day visit. It has among the biggest coastal forest in East Africa as well as a variety of Kenya’s plant species most of them being endangered. Large herds of elephants reside in Shimba Hills National Reserve and it is the sole place in Kenya where you can visit the Sable Antelope. Shimba Hills National Reserve sits on an area of 300 square kilometers and is under management by the Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS). The reserve is popular for its high concentration of elephants that became too many in the early 2000’s. In 2005, Kenya Wildlife Services transferred about 150 elephants to Tsavo East National Park which was considered the largest transfer of animals in history since Noah’s ark. There are about 500 elephants in the reserve however this has caused some friction with the farmers in the area. Shimba Hills Reserve is popular for its amazing bird watching moments and bird enthusiasts can look for the Zanzibar Red Bishop as well as the croaking Cisticola. As a result of the forest being dense, game viewing is not as easy as it is on the savannahs since a few animals stay deep in the forest. Game drives at Shimba are better in the afternoon since most animals leave the shade to look for some water to quench their thirst.

The beautiful Sheldrick falls that stand at 21m tall are situated in Shimba Hills national reserve and  got their name from David Sheldrick, the creator of Sheldrick Wildlife Trust after he came across this hidden gem while flying over the area.

DESCRIPTION: 

A 1 day shimba hills safari is a full day trip that starts early in the morning at dawn and ends in the evening. this 1 day safari to shimba hills is a short scenic safari where you will have about five hours on a game drive including a bush walk looking for animals and birds while also enjoying the spectacular coastal forest landscapes of shimba hills national reserve. this wild kenya safaris day trip starts from diani beach, tiwi and also other areas on the kenya coast., 1 day shimba hills safari itinerary: .

We pick you up from your Hotel at about 6:00am and drive along the Mombasa – Diani highway towards Kwale town to Shimba Hills National Reserve. Upon arrival at the parks main gate, we begin your game drive searching for the few shy animals such as forest elephants, sable antelopes, buffalo, warthogs, impala, baboons and other types of animals and birds. Unlike other the national parks, shimba hills is more densely covered by forest so is more of a scenic safari than a wildlife safari, consider spotting the hidden wildlife as a plus.

At about 10.00am we stop at a look out point where we join a ranger for a bush walk to the Sheldrick Waterfalls, its quite a long and interesting hike so a good pair of walking shoes is recommended, you can also take a dip under the falls so do remember to bring a towel and a change of clothes. After a few minutes enjoying the waterfalls, you walk back uphill to the vehicle and continue the game drive drive until you reach the main gate. We then exit the park and proceed for lunch and rest at Shimba Hills Green Safari Lodge or similar.

After lunch, enjoy the views and swimming pool at the lodge and later in the afternoon we drive back to your beach hotel arriving in the evening.

On this day, you will depart from your hotel and drive to the Shimba Hills Park, which is just a mere 45km from the gorgeous coastal city of Mombasa. You will also get to visit the stunning Sheldrick waterfalls. The your delicious lunch will be served at the Shimba Hills Tree Lodge, which is set in the middle of a gorgeous tropical rain forest. After filling up on some delicious food, there will be an afternoon safari game drive in the Shimba Hills National Reserve from around 4 in the afternoon. Our dinner and overnight stay will then be courtesy of the Shimba Hills Lodge, where we can witness the many nocturnal animals which visit the lodge's waterhole during the evening.

In the morning you drive towards the Shimba Hills National Reserve in the Kwale district, a district on Kenya’s south coast. From here you can spot the Indian Ocean and Chale Island to the East and the Tsavo plains and Taita hills to the West as well as enjoy several breathtaking vantage points with splendid views of the rolling hills and the forested countryside. You better not forget your camera!

The reserve consists of rainforest as well as wood­- and grasslands. As one of the largest coastal forests in East Africa this reserve is rich in flora and fauna with a high biodiversity. Animal species you might encounter during this safari are elephant shrews, giraffes, hyenas, bush pigs, buffalos, monkeys, leopards, genets, civet cats, water- and bushbucks, African bush babies, duikers and bushy tailed mongooses. It is also home to the last breeding herd of indigenous sable antelopes in Kenya and to 111 different bird species. Both the coastal forest and the grasslands hold many bird species such as the rednecked spur fowl, the croaking cisticola and the Zanzibar red bishop.

Waterfalls and views During this trip you also go to the famous Sheldrick waterfalls. Our driver will drop you at the viewing platform, after which you make your way down a number of stairs and through grasslands and forest to reach the waterfall. A ranger joins you on this 30 minute walk to protect you, allowing you to enjoy the beautiful scenery and eventually the freshwater pool at the foot of the falls.

When staying in Diani Beach it’s possible to make a daytrip to the Shimba Hills. However, it’s also possible to spend the night in one of the camps of Shimba Hills. Here you enjoy splendid views from the infinity pools that are built on the hills and overlook the coastline of the Kwale district.

Sables, squirrels and bush babies

Though it doesn’t compare with Kenya’s finest in terms of overall game viewing, this small hilly reserve offers much to wildlife connoisseurs and it’s also a great overnight add-on to a beach holiday, situated less than an hour’s drive from Mombasa and the resorts of Diani Beach. It is the only place in Kenya that supports the sable antelope, and I’ve successfully spotted the handsome male – with its black coat and backward-curved horns – on each of four previous visits. I’ve also had good luck here with elephant, buffalo and other antelope, but large predators seem to be very rare and/or secretive. A wonderful feature of the reserve is its only lodge, which feels like a rambling, overgrown tree house rising from above a jungle-swathed waterhole. which really does feel like an extension of the luxuriant jungle surrounding it. Elephant and birds such as forest hornbills and fish eagles are often seen here, but the real stars are the beautiful red-bellied coast squirrels that clamber around the building during the daylight shift, to be succeeded at night by a multitude of bug-eyed greater bush babies. Great fun!

Shimba Hills is less than an hour’s drive from Diani Beach and is characterised by coastal rainforest and patches of rolling grasslands. Its home to a variety of large mammals and is best-known for its herds of buffalo and elephant and being one of the few places in Kenya to see sable antelope. Our short safari was pretty eventful; our guide pointed out spoor and we saw monkeys and birds on our walk to the impressive Sheldrick Falls, on the Lango Plains we saw graceful sable, and from the look-out at Giriama Point, entrancing views of the Indian Ocean. A day trip here is rewarding and includes lunch at Shimba Lodge, from where elephant viewing is virtually guaranteed from the wooden balconies. The hills are much cooler than the coast making it a refreshing excursion.

Herds of sable antelope, close to the Indian Ocean

Despite being within easy driving distance of the hugely popular Indian Ocean resort of Diani Beach, Shimba Hills receives relatively few visitors. It’s a modest park, but I found it enjoyable for a quick visit, and a refreshing change from the coastal strip in every way – not least because it’s considerably less humid up here, and there’s an excellent forest safari lodge with a raised wildlife viewing platform. The hills are a lush and pleasant mixture of tropical woodland and grassland. You’ll definitely see elephants here – a translocation programme reduced their numbers in recent years, but there are still plenty left. It’s also fairly easy to see sable antelope – this is the only park in Kenya where these magnificent creatures are found. Other species you may encounter include ostriches and buffalo.

Bush and Beach

This very underrated reserve is less than an hours drive from Diani Beach, the biggest beach resort in Kenya, and is ideal for an easy morning game drive. True the wildlife variety and concentrations don’t come close to Kenya’s big name parks and reserves but for a break from the beach and a taste of the bush it couldn’t be better. Many hotels in Diani and elsewhere along the south coast organize half or full day packages to the reserve which often includes (a very mediocre) lunch at the Shimba Lodge. I’ve always enjoyed my visits to Shimba Hills and the quantity of wildlife has generally exceeded expectations. The park is best-known for the huge, graceful sable antelope and indeed this is the only place in Kenya that they can be seen. The park is also known for its elephant as well as a good mix of antelope. Whilst I have only ever seen a couple of elephants here I have seen sable antelope on each visit as well as plenty of buffalo, warthog, impala and a few giraffe. One of the highlights of a visit for me is the short (ranger-led) walk through the forest to the impressive Sheldrick Falls. There aren’t many parks or reserves you can walk in so don’t miss this opportunity. If you come to Shimba Hills expecting wildlife on the scale of the Masai Mara then you will leave disappointed but lower your expectations somewhat and you’ll likely find this a highly rewarding park. I would say that it’s best for those with limited time and who just want a little sample of the Kenyan bush, but most of all I would recommend this park to anyone with younger children: the short distances, good roads and low costs combined with just enough animals to keep interest levels from flagging put this park alongside Nairobi and Nakuru national parks as the best for families.

Hilltop retreat

This little jewel of a reserve is nestled among attractive hills just an hour’s drive inland from some of Kenya’s most popular beach resorts. It can’t offer the Big Five drama of Tsavo or Masai Mara, but you will see plenty of wildlife – from colobus monkeys in the forest clefts to Kenya’s only sable antelope in the rolling grassland. Most significant, perhaps, are the 600-plus elephant: this growing population is damaging much of the precious indigenous forest, so a corridor has been created to allow the pachyderms access to land outside the park. Big game aside, this is a great place to get to know smaller wildlife, from monitor lizards to warthogs. To get a good feel for the landscape I highly recommend the 2km hike to Sheldrick Falls – escorted by a ranger, if you’d rather not risk a solo meeting with the odd buffalo or elephant. The falls are impressive, the forest bird life rich, and it’s a rare chance to feel the bush underfoot – something that may not arise during the rest of your Kenyan safari. My one visit was a day-trip, so I did not stay overnight at the Shimba Hills Lodge. But this old timber construction is known for its pleasant bush ambience, especially after dark, when game visits the floodlit waterhole and nocturnal species, including bushbaby and genet, swing by the terrace in search of snacks.

Shimba Hills, the last refuge for sable antelopes in Kenya

This very accessible coastal reserve is a real gem. Sables are one of my favourite antelopes and this park, the only sanctuary in Kenya for these majestic antelopes, is one of the best places to see them in Africa. The sable antelopes here are in fact localized sub-species under the name of Roosevelt’s sable. The park is small and you should be able to take most of it in during a day visit from any of the coastal resorts nearby, but if you stay the night at Shimba lodge you’ll get a real feel for the surrounding forest. The stilted lodge overlooks a waterhole, which attract a stream of forest dwellers including elephant and buffalo. A real delight for me, are the striking red-bellied coast squirrels and the nocturnal greater galagos, which seem to have taken resident around the lodge.

Guests who wish to enjoy our safari tour from the comfort of their vehicles can do so with our self-drive-thru option.  VEHICLES WITH HARD DOORS AND HARD TOP ROOFS ONLY. Those interested in this experience should first read the Drive-Thru Rules to ensure their safety and the wellbeing of our animals. You will be required to sign a vehicle waiver prior to entering the safari fields.

The Drive-Thru Safari pre-season/post-season option is available on select weekends only in April and November, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The cost of admission is $9 per person for all ages three and older.

Please note: Only the Safari Tour Fields are open for the Drive-Thru option. Zoo exhibits are open from May 1st through October during the regular season.

Things to Keep in Mind for Your Next Safari Tour

To help guests get the most out of their animal safari in Pennsylvania, we encourage all to be mindful of when the tours begin. Rides go out right when the park opens, and guests are welcome to come early to avoid crowds or waiting in long lines. Our tours last around 45 minutes, providing plenty of time to take in the entire tour without tiring out the youngest in your group. The last tour departs our Safari Station one hour before closing.

Please be advised that we do not accept reservations for our tours as they are offered on a first come, first serve basis. However, even if you miss your preferred time, another is coming up shortly!

The Comprehensive Guide to Moscow Nightlife

Moscow’s nightlife scene is thriving, and arguably one of the best the world has to offer – top-notch Russian women, coupled with a never-ending list of venues, Moscow has a little bit of something for everyone’s taste. Moscow nightlife is not for the faint of heart – and if you’re coming, you better be ready to go Friday and Saturday night into the early morning.

This comprehensive guide to Moscow nightlife will run you through the nuts and bolts of all you need to know about Moscow’s nightclubs and give you a solid blueprint to operate with during your time in Moscow.

What you need to know before hitting Moscow nightclubs

Prices in moscow nightlife.

Before you head out and start gaming all the sexy Moscow girls , we have to talk money first. Bring plenty because in Moscow you can never bring a big enough bankroll. Remember, you’re the man so making a fuzz of not paying a drink here or there will not go down well.

Luckily most Moscow clubs don’t do cover fees. Some electro clubs will charge 15-20$, depending on their lineup. There’s the odd club with a minimum spend of 20-30$, which you’ll drop on drinks easily. By and large, you can scope out the venues for free, which is a big plus.

Bottle service is a great deal in Moscow. At top-tier clubs, it starts at 1,000$. That’ll go a long way with premium vodka at 250$, especially if you have three or four guys chipping in. Not to mention that it’s a massive status boost for getting girls, especially at high-end clubs.

Without bottle service, you should estimate a budget of 100-150$ per night. That is if you drink a lot and hit the top clubs with the hottest girls. Scale down for less alcohol and more basic places.

Dress code & Face control

Door policy in Moscow is called “face control” and it’s always the guy behind the two gorillas that gives the green light if you’re in or out.

In Moscow nightlife there’s only one rule when it comes to dress codes:

You can never be underdressed.

People dress A LOT sharper than, say, in the US and that goes for both sexes. For high-end clubs, you definitely want to roll with a sharp blazer and a pocket square, not to mention dress shoes in tip-top condition. Those are the minimum requirements to level the playing field vis a vis with other sharply dressed guys that have a lot more money than you do. Unless you plan to hit explicit electro or underground clubs, which have their own dress code, you are always on the money with that style.

Getting in a Moscow club isn’t as hard as it seems: dress sharp, speak English at the door and look like you’re in the mood to spend all that money that you supposedly have (even if you don’t). That will open almost any door in Moscow’s nightlife for you.

Types of Moscow Nightclubs

In Moscow there are four types of clubs with the accompanying female clientele:

High-end clubs:

These are often crossovers between restaurants and clubs with lots of tables and very little space to dance. Heavy accent on bottle service most of the time but you can work the room from the bar as well. The hottest and most expensive girls in Moscow go there. Bring deep pockets and lots of self-confidence and you have a shot at swooping them.

Regular Mid-level clubs:

They probably resemble more what you’re used to in a nightclub: big dancefloors, stages and more space to roam around. Bottle service will make you stand out more but you can also do well without. You can find all types of girls but most will be in the 6-8 range. Your targets should always be the girls drinking and ideally in pairs. It’s impossible not to swoop if your game is at least half-decent.

Basic clubs/dive bars:

Usually spots with very cheap booze and lax face control. If you’re dressed too sharp and speak no Russian, you might attract the wrong type of attention so be vigilant. If you know the local scene you can swoop 6s and 7s almost at will. Usually students and girls from the suburbs.

Electro/underground clubs:

Home of the hipsters and creatives. Parties there don’t mean meeting girls and getting drunk but doing pills and spacing out to the music. Lots of attractive hipster girls if that is your niche. That is its own scene with a different dress code as well.

What time to go out in Moscow

Moscow nightlife starts late. Don’t show up at bars and preparty spots before 11pm because you’ll feel fairly alone. Peak time is between 1am and 3am. That is also the time of Moscow nightlife’s biggest nuisance: concerts by artists you won’t know and who only distract your girls from drinking and being gamed. From 4am to 6am the regular clubs are emptying out but plenty of people, women included, still hit up one of the many afterparty clubs. Those last till well past 10am.

As far as days go: Fridays and Saturdays are peak days. Thursday is an OK day, all other days are fairly weak and you have to know the right venues.

The Ultimate Moscow Nightclub List

Short disclaimer: I didn’t add basic and electro clubs since you’re coming for the girls, not for the music. This list will give you more options than you’ll be able to handle on a weekend.

Preparty – start here at 11PM

Classic restaurant club with lots of tables and a smallish bar and dancefloor. Come here between 11pm and 12am when the concert is over and they start with the actual party. Even early in the night tons of sexy women here, who lean slightly older (25 and up).

The second floor of the Ugolek restaurant is an extra bar with dim lights and house music tunes. Very small and cozy with a slight hipster vibe but generally draws plenty of attractive women too. A bit slower vibe than Valenok.

Very cool, spread-out venue that has a modern library theme. Not always full with people but when it is, it’s brimming with top-tier women. Slow vibe here and better for grabbing contacts and moving on.

High-end: err on the side of being too early rather than too late because of face control.

Secret Room

Probably the top venue at the moment in Moscow . Very small but wildly popular club, which is crammed with tables but always packed. They do parties on Thursdays and Sundays as well. This club has a hip-hop/high-end theme, meaning most girls are gold diggers, IG models, and tattooed hip hop chicks. Very unfavorable logistics because there is almost no room no move inside the club but the party vibe makes it worth it. Strict face control.

Close to Secret Room and with a much more favorable and spacious three-part layout. This place attracts very hot women but also lots of ball busters and fakes that will leave you blue-balled. Come early because after 4am it starts getting empty fast. Electronic music.

A slightly kitsch restaurant club that plays Russian pop and is full of gold diggers, semi-pros, and men from the Caucasus republics. Thursday is the strongest night but that dynamic might be changing since Secret Room opened its doors. You can swoop here but it will be a struggle.

Mid-level: your sweet spot in terms of ease and attractiveness of girls for an average budget.

Started going downwards in 2018 due to lax face control and this might get even worse with the World Cup. In terms of layout one of the best Moscow nightclubs because it’s very big and bottle service gives you a good edge here. Still attracts lots of cute girls with loose morals but plenty of provincial girls (and guys) as well. Swooping is fairly easy here.

I haven’t been at this place in over a year, ever since it started becoming ground zero for drunken teenagers. Similar clientele to Icon but less chic, younger and drunker. Decent mainstream music that attracts plenty of tourists. Girls are easy here as well.

Sort of a Coyote Ugly (the real one in Moscow sucks) with party music and lots of drunken people licking each others’ faces. Very entertaining with the right amount of alcohol and very easy to pull in there. Don’t think about staying sober in here, you’ll hate it.

Artel Bessonitsa/Shakti Terrace

Electronic music club that is sort of a high-end place with an underground clientele and located between the teenager clubs Icon and Gipsy. Very good music but a bit all over the place with their vibe and their branding. You can swoop almost any type of girl here from high-heeled beauty to coked-up hipsters, provided they’re not too sober.

Afterparty: if by 5AM  you haven’t pulled, it’s time to move here.

Best afterparty spot in terms of trying to get girls. Pretty much no one is sober in there and savage gorilla game goes a long way. Lots of very hot and slutty-looking girls but it can be hard to tell apart who is looking for dick and who is just on drugs but not interested. If by 9-10am you haven’t pulled, it is probably better to surrender.

The hipster alternative for afterparties, where even more drugs are in play. Plenty of attractive girls there but you have to know how to work this type of club. A nicer atmosphere and better music but if you’re desperate to pull, you’ll probably go to Miks.

Weekday jokers: if you’re on the hunt for some sexy Russian girls during the week, here are two tips to make your life easier.

Chesterfield

Ladies night on Wednesdays means this place gets pretty packed with smashed teenagers and 6s and 7s. Don’t pull out the three-piece suit in here because it’s a “simpler” crowd. Definitely your best shot on Wednesdays.

If you haven’t pulled at Chesterfield, you can throw a Hail Mary and hit up Garage’s Black Music Wednesdays. Fills up really late but there are some cute Black Music groupies in here. Very small club. Thursday through Saturday they do afterparties and you have an excellent shot and swooping girls that are probably high.

Shishas Sferum

This is pretty much your only shot on Mondays and Tuesdays because they offer free or almost free drinks for women. A fairly low-class club where you should watch your drinks. As always the case in Moscow, there will be cute girls here on any day of the week but it’s nowhere near as good as on the weekend.

In a nutshell, that is all you need to know about where to meet Moscow girls in nightlife. There are tons of options, and it all depends on what best fits your style, based on the type of girls that you’re looking for.
