SINGAPORE, 3 April 2023 – Changi Airport Group (CAG), Singapore Airlines (SIA) and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) re-launched the Free Singapore Tour today after a three-year hiatus due to Covid-19. Three of the existing tours available since pre-Covid-19 - the City Sights Tour, Heritage Tour and Jewel Tour – have been refreshed to include new points of interest. A brand-new Changi Precinct tour will introduce travellers to the interesting sights and sounds of the eastern region surrounding Singapore Changi Airport. Each tour lasts 2.5 hours and will be available daily, with plans to progressively increase to nine tours a day.

With transit and transfer passengers accounting for about 30% of passenger traffic at Changi Airport pre-pandemic, the tour was first introduced in 1987 to enhance the airport’s attractiveness as a transfer hub and to entice transit and transfer passengers to visit Singapore as a holiday destination. In 2019, over 80,000 passengers went on the Free Singapore Tour. The top markets were India, Australia and Indonesia, with Indian and Australian travellers making up more than one third of the total participants.

New Changi Precinct tour to showcase eastern Singapore

The Changi Precinct Tour is a new itinerary that will bring participants to the eastern part of Singapore to visit local community spaces such as the Tampines heartland, and to admire the rustic charms of Changi Village and Changi Beach. It offers a glimpse of how local residents live, and tells the tale of Singapore’s history on this part of the island, away from the usual hustle and bustle of Singapore’s city centre.

Refreshed itineraries to offer travellers new experiences

At the Jewel Tour, in addition to visiting popular attractions like the Shiseido Forest Valley and the HSBC Rain Vortex, participants can now discover more about Singapore’s food heritage through local brands such as Bee Cheng Hiang and Tong Garden, and sample local snacks at the same time. Another new component of the tour is a free guided walkthrough of a digital attraction - Changi Experience Studio - for participants to experience some of its airport-themed games and interactive exhibits.

New pit stops in the City Sights Tour include the Civic District, where travellers will get an introduction to Singapore’s urban development through visits to various national monuments including the National Gallery Singapore, Anderson Bridge and The Padang. The bus route will also pass through the new Marina Bay Financial District enroute to Gardens by the Bay. The Heritage Tour, available from June, will feature places of interest such as the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple in Chinatown, Arab Street and Haji Lane, for participants to gain a more in-depth understanding of Singapore’s unique and diverse multi-cultural heritage.

The refreshed itineraries also highlight sustainability features at some of the locations featured in the tours, to give participants an overview of Singapore’s sustainability efforts. These include the Eco Community Garden at the rooftop of Our Tampines Hub (as part of the Changi Precinct Tour), environmental sustainability initiatives implemented at Gardens by the Bay (as part of the City Sights Tour) and Jewel (as part of the Jewel Tour).

Monster Day Tours has been appointed by CAG, SIA, and STB to run the Free Singapore Tours.

Mr Lim Ching Kiat, Executive Vice President of Air Hub & Cargo Development at CAG, said, “The Free Singapore Tour was very popular among our transit and transfer passengers prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, and we are happy to bring it back with the resumption of travel. For travellers who choose to transit or transfer at Changi Airport, the Free Singapore Tour is designed to give them a glimpse of what Singapore has to offer, including the unique attractions and offerings at Jewel Changi Airport and the neighbouring Changi Precinct which has a rich cultural and historical heritage. Together with our partners, SIA and STB, we hope to welcome more passengers who fly through Changi Airport to enjoy a slice of Singapore through our new tours and world-class attractions and facilities.”

Mr Lee Lik Hsin, Executive Vice President Commercial, Singapore Airlines, said, “We welcome the timely relaunch of the enhanced Free Singapore Tour, which offers a unique transit experience for our customers. We are pleased to continue working closely with CAG and STB to promote the sustainable growth of travel to and through Singapore.”

Mr Chang Chee Pey, Assistant Chief Executive, Marketing Group, Singapore Tourism Board , said, "We are delighted to bring back the Free Singapore Tour through our long-standing partnership with CAG and SIA. It is imperative for us to refresh our tourism offerings to meet the demand for wellness and eco-conscious travel, and cater to travellers seeking deeper experiences. We hope that the tour will inspire transit and transfer passengers to plan a longer trip to Singapore in future, and discover much more of what our vibrant city has to offer.”

Book a tour in advance on new portal

Advance booking is now available on Changi Airport’s website. Transit and transfer passengers who wish to join the Free Singapore Tour must have a layover period of at least 5.5 hours but less than 24 hours. Participants will need to have a valid entry visa for Singapore to take part in the tours.

Free Singapore Tour for layover travellers resumes, visits to local residences now included

singapore transit tours

SINGAPORE - After a three-year hiatus because of the pandemic, the Free Singapore Tour for layover travellers resumed on Monday, comprising four daily guided tours of less than three hours each.

For the first time, visits to local community spaces and residences will be among the itinerary options for transit and transfer visitors who are here for 5½ to 24 hours.

The newest addition is a 2½-hour-long Changi Precinct Tour, which includes stops at Tampines New Town to see local housing, and at Tampines Central Park to catch uniquely designed playgrounds.

Other stops include Singapore’s first integrated community and lifestyle hub, Our Tampines Hub; Changi Chapel and Museum; Changi Village; and Changi Beach Park.

Three returning tours – City Sights Tour, Heritage Tour and Jewel Tour – will have new points of interest.

The City Sights Tour will now include a stop in the Civic District to take in the National Gallery Singapore, Anderson Bridge and the Padang. The bus route will also take visitors through the Marina Bay Financial District en route to Gardens by the Bay.

The Heritage Tour, which will be available from June, will stop at multicultural destinations such as Chinatown, Arab Street and Haji Lane.

On the Jewel Tour, tourists will visit popular Changi Airport attractions such as the Shiseido Forest Valley and the HSBC Rain Vortex, as well as sample snacks and learn about Singapore’s food heritage through local brands such as Bee Cheng Hiang and Tong Garden.

The free tours, which will be run by home-grown company Monster Day Tours, can be booked on the Changi Airport website.

The bus tours – Changi Precinct, City Sights and Heritage – take up to 40 visitors each session, while the Jewel Tour, a walking tour, accepts up to 25 persons for a round.

There are plans to progressively increase the frequency to nine tours a day, from the three starting on Monday, said Changi Airport Group (CAG), Singapore Airlines and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) in a joint statement.

Transit and transfer passengers accounted for about 30 per cent of passenger traffic at Changi Airport prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, they said.

Over 80,000 passengers went on the free tours in 2019, with travellers from India and Australia making up more than one-third of the total participants.

“The Free Singapore Tour was very popular among our transit and transfer passengers prior to the pandemic, and we are happy to bring it back with the resumption of travel,” said Mr Lim Ching Kiat, executive vice-president of air hub and cargo development at CAG, adding that the tour is designed to give travellers a glimpse of what Singapore has to offer.

Mr Chang Chee Pey, assistant chief executive of the marketing group at STB, said: “It is imperative for us to refresh our tourism offerings to meet the demand for wellness and eco-conscious travel, and cater to travellers seeking deeper experiences.

“We hope that the tour will inspire transit and transfer passengers to plan a longer trip to Singapore in future, and discover much more of what our vibrant city has to offer.”

Before the start of the pandemic, Changi Airport was the world’s seventh busiest in terms of international passenger traffic, managing a record 68.3 million passenger movements in 2019.

The recovery of passenger traffic is on track, with Transport Minister S. Iswaran saying in March that it is expected to return to pre-pandemic levels by 2024.

STB’s forecasts for visitor arrivals in 2023 are bullish, with 2022’s 6.3 million figure expected to double and hit 12 million to 14 million.

Singapore’s international visitor arrivals grew to 957,605 in February, up from 931,652 in January.

While the February figure set a new record since the start of the pandemic in early 2020, it is still significantly below the 1.7 million visitors recorded in January 2020.

Passengers with lengthy layovers at Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) can now embark on free tours of the city-state once again as the airport resumes the service after a two-year hiatus.

Called the Free Singapore Tour, the scheme is operated by Changi Airport Group (CAG), Singapore Airlines (SIA), and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB). The program offers a range of tour itineraries, which was first introduced to transit and transfer passengers in 1987 but was suspended for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Three of the excursions—the City Sights Tour, the Heritage Tour, and the Jewel Tour—have all been revived from before the pandemic but with extra sights added, while an entirely new tour has also been added—the Changi Precinct Tour.

The City Sights Tour will whisk passengers around Singapore, visiting many of the city’s most famous landmarks, including the National Gallery Singapore, the Anderson Bridge, Gardens by the Bay, and the Marina Bay Financial District. The Heritage Tour, meanwhile, will take travelers to see some of Singapore’s more historical and traditional sights, visiting distinctly cultural areas such as Chinatown and Arab Street.

For travelers wishing to stay within the airport, the Jewel Tour will take tourists to some of Changi Airport’s world-class attractions. This includes the Shiseido Forest Valley, a tranquil indoor forest featuring plants from all over the world, and the HSBC Rain Vortex – the world’s largest indoor waterfall.

Meanwhile, the newly curated Changi Precinct Tour will showcase attractions in the airport’s local area, including popular destinations such as Changi Village and Changi Beach. At the same time, the tour guide will give tourists a rundown of the district’s history and traditions.

“We are delighted to bring back the Free Singapore Tour through our long-standing partnership with CAG and SIA,” said Chang Chee Pey, Assistant Chief Executive of the Singapore Tourism Board’s Marketing Group. “It is imperative for us to refresh our tourism offerings to meet the demand for wellness and eco-conscious travel and cater to travelers seeking deeper experiences. We hope that the tour will inspire transit and transfer passengers to plan a longer trip to Singapore in the future and discover much more of what our vibrant city has to offer.”

According to the airport, each tour lasts up to 2.5 hours and is open to all passengers, with a layover at Changi Airport lasting between 5.5 hours and 24 hours. The tours run every day, including weekends and public holidays. They are free and can be booked now on the airport’s official website.

Lim Ching Kiat, Executive Vice President of Air Hub & Cargo Development at Changi Airport Group, explained that the Free Singapore Tour was very popular among transit and transfer passengers prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, “and we are happy to bring it back with the resumption of travel.”

Ching Kiat adds that the Free Singapore Tour is “designed to give them a glimpse of what Singapore has to offer, including the unique attractions and offerings at Jewel Changi Airport and the neighboring Changi Precinct, which has a rich cultural and historical heritage.”

“Together with our partners, SIA and STB, we hope to welcome more passengers who fly through Changi Airport to enjoy a slice of Singapore through our new tours and world-class attractions and facilities.”

Singapore Airport Layover Sightseeing

Airport Overview

Singapore Changi International Airport is consistently ranked a favourite among travellers participating in our annual Best Airport Survey. Layovers of less than five hours are happily spent exploring the depths of this world-class airport. The five airport gardens are a few relaxing places to visit, and the entertainment options are plentiful. Couple that with Wi-Fi and snooze chairs, and this Singapore layover is off to a good start. For more information on the airport, check out our Singapore Changi Airport Guide .

Singapore Sightseeing Attractions

Below are a few of the top things to do in Singapore:

Transit Tour

Together, Singapore Changi Airport and Singapore Airlines offer a FREE two-hour city tour to people with layovers of a minimum of 4 hours. A Heritage Tour and a City Sights Tour run at select times during the day. Registration can be completed at the airport at the Free Singapore Tours desks in Terminals 2 and 3.

Marina Sands

A spin through Marina Bay is an exercise in extravagance and modernity. The area is most famous for the Integrated Resort Marina Bay Sands , which houses the city’s largest casino and shopping mall. With gondola rides, skyscrapers and the world’s highest rooftop pool (on the 57th floor!), this resort is sure to amaze. Within Marina Bay, you will also find several spas offering the city’s famous fish pedicure, where Garra rufa fish nibble away at dead skin. Be sure to walk along the massive pedestrian Helix Bridge as you wander the perimeter of this DNA-inspired piece of architecture, pausing on the viewing platforms for stunning glimpses of the Singapore Skyline.

  • Time Required: For some, visiting Marina Bay is a multi-day adventure. For layover purposes, we recommend budgeting at least 2 hours to explore a few areas of the park – though more time is always better. Note that this does not include travel time to and from the airport.
  • How to Get There: Check out this Google Map for details on public and private transit options and the required time.
  • Plan Your Visit : Visit Tripadvisor for more information about visiting Marina Bay, book a tour or read traveller reviews.

Singapore Flyer

Singapore Flyer

Soar to the height of a 42-storey building as you circle on the world’s largest observation wheel: the Singapore Flyer . From the peak of the wheel, you will get some of the best panoramas of the city possible – with bird’s eye views of Marina Bay , the Singapore River , Empress Place and the Padang. Each capsule holds up to 28 people and serves cocktails, snacks and beverages during unique experience rides. Round off the experience with a 1-hour tour through the Journey of Dreams – a multi-media exhibit that shares the story of the wheel’s development about the city’s history, culture and aspirations. Discounts are available if you book ahead online.

  • Time Required:   each rotation on the wheel takes approximately 30 minutes, and you should also budget 15 – 20 minutes for wait times in line. Add another hour to visit the Journey of Dreams exhibit. Note that this does not include travel time to and from the airport.
  • Plan Your Visit : Visit Tripadvisor for more information about visiting the Singapore Flyer, book a tour or read traveller reviews.

Singapore Botanic Gardens

Craving some fresh air on your layover rather than the intensity of this world city? A trip to the planet’s most extensive botanic gardens may be the perfect antidote to a long Singapore layover. With over 600,000 specimens enclosed within the 74-hectare perimeter, these trails will help you unwind amidst the explosive gardens. Walking trails run throughout, carrying you through the Tanglin Heritage Core, the central belt of the Gardens and Bukit Timah, and the educational and discovery zone. The gardens also provide an interesting peek into the city’s history and development since they were founded in the early 1800s.

  • Time Required: Exploring the full breadth of the botanical gardens could take a lifetime. We might recommend a minimum of an hour to explore at least a section of the park. Free guided walking tours are run on Saturday mornings and afternoons. Note that this time estimate does not include travel time to and from the airport.
  • Plan Your Visit : Visit Tripadvisor for more information about visiting the Singapore Botanic Gardens, book a tour or read traveller reviews.

Airport Transportation

Singapore Changi (SIN) is connected to the city through several means. Driving in private transport to the city center covers 11 miles. Taxis take in the neighbourhood of 30 minutes, while public transit takes closer to an hour.

Public transit options include:

  • Buses (stations at Terminals 1, 2 and 3): Bus Service 36 connects the terminals to the city center.
  • Metro (Terminals 2 and 3): The MRT also connects the airport to the city center via the Tanah Merah station.

Private transit options include:

  • Airport Shuttles: The transit desk organizes fixed-fare shuttles to most downtown locations.
  • Car Rentals: Rental desks are in the Arrivals Halls of Terminals 1, 2 and 3.
  • Taxis: Available at the Arrivals Halls of all airport terminals.
  • Free Business Park Shuttles: Changi offers free shuttles between the Changi Business Park and the airport

Before You Go: Layover Tips

Now that you are motivated and excited about your mini layover vacation, check a few final logistical concerns off your list before you fully commit.

  • Do you need to organize a visa to leave the airport? Requirements change frequently and for each nationality, so be sure to seek out current details on the availability, cost, and procedures of obtaining a transit visa.
  • When is your next flight’s check-in time? Double-check with your airline exactly when you need to be at the airport – and plan your layover accordingly.
  • What are security wait times like at the airport? Some airports are notorious for extended security wait times, so research in advance and factor that into your overall time budget.
  • What’s happening with your luggage? When you check in to your first flight, confirm whether your luggage is checked through or needs to be picked up between your connecting flights. Visit our Singapore Changi Airport Guide for information on Luggage Storage.

Singapore is open to all transit travellers with no specific regulations or requirements. However, please note the following points on qualifying as a transit traveller, and possible foreign requirements, to ensure that you have a smooth transit experience.

Transit travellers are defined as those travelling to another country via Singapore,  without clearing Singapore arrival immigration .

Travellers who intend to clear arrival immigration to enter Singapore, or booked flights which require them to enter Singapore to collect tickets or baggage and check-in again for the connecting flight, are not considered transit travellers . Several Low Cost Carriers require travellers to clear immigration to collect their onward connecting tickets in the Departure Check-In hall. Such travellers should ensure that they fulfil all public health and entry requirements found on the “ Entering Singapore ” page.

If unsure, travellers connecting through Singapore should consult their airline on whether they need to go through immigration, or if they can remain in the transit area to connect to their next flight.

Travellers are advised to check with the appropriate authorities of your destination country/region on what requirements they impose on travellers transiting through Singapore.

Please note that pre-departure COVID-19 testing services are not available in the transit area of Changi Airport. If your destination requires you to take a COVID-19 pre-departure test, you should do so before your transit in Singapore.

Traveling to/from India via Singapore? You can Take a Free Singapore Tour or Explore Changi Airport during Layover

The Free Singapore Tour is back for international transit travelers after three years of the pandemic. Of all major airport layover tours, the Singapore Changi Airport transit tour is the most interesting one . A free city sightseeing tour or a walking tour across the airport is the best to kill a layover (minimum 5.5 hours) at Changi Airport while traveling on Singapore Airlines flights between India and USA . The Free Singapore Tour comprises two city sightseeing itineraries (City Sights Tour), one itinerary exploring the airport (Jewel Tour), and a newly added residential town & village beach tour (Changi Precinct Tour). You can pre-book either of the four tour itineraries.

What are the eligibility requirements for a free Singapore airport or city tour?

All international transit travelers are eligible for the Free Singapore Tour, regardless of their nationality. The first and foremost condition is the layover period or transit time that must be between 5.5 hours to 24 hours. Your transit schedule at Changi Airport should correspond with the tour timings.

How to register for a free Singapore transit tour?

You can register online for the Free Singapore Tour, a guided service. You can pre-book a tour itinerary of your choice under the ‘Airport Guide’ section of the website ChangiAirport.com. Do note that registration or booking is absolutely free.

Is an entry or transit visa required for the Free Singapore Tour?

US citizens do not need an entry or transit visa for a Changi Airport tour or a Singapore City sightseeing tour. Singapore offers 96-hour visa free transit facility (VFTF) to Indians in transit to or from any third country via Changi International Airport. Indian passport holders with a valid US/UK/Canada/Japan/Australia/NZ visa and valid onward flight tickets are eligible for 96-hour visa free transit in Singapore. An entry visa to Singapore is required for an airport layover/city transit tour, if Indian transit travelers do not meet the eligibility criteria for the visa-free transit facility.

Changi Airport Precinct Tour

Among free Singapore airport layover tours for transit travelers, the 2.5-hour Changi Precinct Tour will take you away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The tour will let you explore a “uniquely designed residential town and a quiet village.” the tour starts with a visit to Tampines, the residential town which was once a forested area with swamps.  The town won the UN World Habitat Award for being an exemplary model of local Singaporean life.

The Changi Precinct Tour goes through Tampines Hub, Singapore’s largest integrated community and lifestyle hub with environment-friendly space for food and leisure services. The next stop on the tour is Changi Chapel & Museum where the story of the prisoners of World War II is preserved.

Changi Village and Beach Park is the most beautiful part of Changi Precinct Tour for international transit travelers in Singapore. It is a recreational getaway with pristine white beaches immersed in tranquility, where you can breathe in fresh air, listen to your heartbeats, and drink to natural beauty. This is also a popular place for plane spotting.

Changi Airport Jewel Tour

A 2.5-km walking tour across Changi International Airport. Exploring the world’s best airport (in 2023), from the Control Tower to Canopy Park to the forest valley and indoor waterfall in the Jewel complex, is the best thing to do during transit in Singapore if your layover falls short of city sightseeing. Changi Airport’s Jewel tour starts from the Jewel complex where you can breathe in the calm of the lush green landscape inundated with natural light.

The world’s tallest indoor waterfall at Singapore Changi Airport is the prime attraction of the Jewel Tour. The cascading waterfall doubles up as a light-and-sound show in the evenings. Family travelers with kids can see the magic of aviation through interactive games and immersive projections in the Changi Experience Studio. The Jewel tour ends at Canopy Park on the topmost floor of the Jewel complex sprawling 14,000 sqm. The Canopy Park is a recreational wonderland with a number of attractions for children.

Singapore City Sights Tour

A City Sights Tour makes the Free Singapore Tour a lot interesting for international transit travelers. The 2.5-hour City Sights Tour showcases the modern landscape of Singapore as a most vibrant city. The tour starts from City Hall where there are the Parliament House and the Supreme Court within spitting distance from. It takes travelers through the Civic District where the old national monuments are juxtaposed with the modern skyscrapers.

The Jubilee Bridge is a significant landmark that commands vivid views of the Marina Bay and the city skyline during the City Sights Tour. The tour includes a 30-minute stopover at the Merlion Park, a major tourist attraction without any entry fee. There are many beautiful spots to take photos and selfies for Instagram. Another 30-minute stopover is at the Gardens by Marina Bay where more than 500,000 plants make a horticultural oasis. The Avatar-like Supertrees that add to the dazzles of the night sky are a must see during this tour.

Singapore Heritage Tour

A 2.5-hour Heritage Tour transports you back to the colonial past of Singapore. It includes stopovers at Chinatown and Kampong Gelam home to many architectural marvels. A heritage tour for international transit travelers in Singapore starts from Marina Bay and continues through Central Business District where the city’s iconic hawker center and a thriving night street food zone are located amid modern high-rises.

Integral to the colonial history of Singapore, Chinatown is a 30-minute stopover during the heritage tour. Street murals depicting the lives of locals in the bygone decades do not go unnoticed. This free Singapore tour for transit travelers includes a visit to the Singapore River and its quays, where the economy of the country is believed to have been cradled. Glimpses of the bustling life in this part of old Singapore are simply unmissable.

The next stopover is Bugis, the early settlement of Europeans in Singapore during the colonial era. Some of the country’s oldest churches with towering spires are situated here. This area is also known as Arts District. The heritage tour culminates at Kampong Gelam where the lifestyle of locals is an interface between the traditional and the trendy. This neighborhood is home to some of Singapore’s swanky cafes and ultramodern art galleries.

I have a layover for about 10+ hours at Changi Airport, I’m a UK citizen holding a British passport. can I do immigration and go inside the city and do the tour on my own and come back to pick up my later flight? Please advise.

' src=

Hi Ramesh! In our knowledge, British citizens are eligible for visa-free entry to Singapore during transit/layover at Changi International Airport. Kindly note that this is subject to approval by the Immigration and Checkpoint Authority at the airport. We have little idea whether international transit travelers can go out of the airport for city sightseeing, without joining a free tour conducted by the airport.

We are going to India for US stamping, so we don’t have valid US Visa stamped on passport in that case we have to apply for Singapore e-visa or transit visa? Also while returning to US we will have valid US stamp in that case no need to apply for any Singapore visa? Please Advice.

Hi Harika! No Singapore visa is required while returning to the USA with a valid US visa. You may not need a Singapore e-visa or transit visa if you stay within the transit area of Changi Airport and do not go through immigration while traveling to India via Singapore.

It’s no news that travelers detest long flight stopovers — but, if there is one place that I wouldn’t mind having a transit or long layover in, it would be Singapore! After all, with the country’s relaxed immigration and fast transportation, it’s quick and easy to get out of the airport and into the center in order to witness its vibrant “City in a Garden” expanse that’s brimming with an eclectic mixture of cultures, cuisines , energies, sights, and sounds. (Singapore Layover)

…Though if the layover hours won’t make the cut, Singapore Changi Airport in itself is worthy of being a ‘separate destination’ because as one of the largest transportation hubs in Southeast Asia, it has over 4 terminals that houses a wide array of shops, services, theaters, gardens, entertainment centers, and more! Besides, did you know that this is the world’s top-ranked airport for six years running?

So if you’ve got a Singapore layover ahead of you, prepare to be utterly awed — and of course, look no further because, with this comprehensive transit guide, I will show you the vast options that you have in order to make the most of your brief stay!

Singapore Layover

To start off, I have sectioned the following Singapore Layover guide into three (3)…

  • Go Outside (DIY): Advisable to follow if you have at least 6 hours of total Singapore layover time. The ‘safest’ is if you have at least 8 hours of a stopover — this is considering traffic during rush hours, etc. Of course, you can also do the suggestions listed under this section if you have lesser hours BUT only if you’re really fast and efficient (…and if you’re willing to take the risk of missing your flight). .
  • Go Outside (FREE Tour): You can only do this outside tour if you have at least 5.5 hours of total layover. This service won’t be given to you if you have less. .
  • Stay Inside (Airport): Obviously, this is best if you don’t have the time to go through immigration and back; hence, it’s ideal if you have 6 hours or less of Singapore layover time — rest assured, there are so many fun things to do inside the airport!

IMPORTANT : If you want to GO OUTSIDE , no matter if it’s the DIY or FREE Tour option, you need to have a valid visa to exit the Singapore Changi Airport and clear immigration. Depending on your nationality , you will need a visa to enter Singapore (e.g. if you’re from the Philippines like me, we are issued visas on arrival for stays of up to 30 days) . . Take note that one of the requirements for entry into Singapore is to provide proof of onward travel — or basically, proof of a flight ticket back home or to another destination after your stay in Singapore. If flight reservations are enough, you can easily purchase this from OneWayFly for only $16, and then present it to the immigration counter.

The following section is in a tabbed format. Simply click the corresponding heading to see its contents.

Explore Singapore on your own!

Before you get drawn into the next tab that says the magic word “ FREE “, I recommend doing this DIY Singapore layover tour by yourself if you rather want the flexibility to choose the places that you actually want to go to.

After all, the free tours offered by Singapore Changi Airport typically don’t give you enough time to explore the city and its stops. This is aside from the fact that they have limited tour time slots.

IMPORTANT TIPS: – Much like I’ve already mentioned above, this kind of Singapore layover itinerary is ideal if you have at least 6 hours in between your flights (8 hours being the safest) — this is taking into account traffic, transit, check-in, and immigration times. . – Don’t forget to leave your luggage at the airport. It’s best to leave your carry-on too, as well as any other heavy backpacks because they will be a pain to carry when you explore the city. . – It’s also best that you have all of your flights under the same airline, if not operated by airline partners so that you can have your checked-in luggage go all the way to your destination. (This saves you the hassle of checking in your luggage again after your Singapore layover or stopover). . – To know how to get in and around the city, scroll up and check the “Travel Guide” section below. . – Check out this great-for-value Singapore Pass that will allow you to visit 2, 3, 4, or 5 attractions in Singapore for a discounted package deal! Choose from any of these places: Universal Studios Singapore, Gardens by the Bay Singapore, Singapore Cable Car, Skyhelix Sentosa Singapore, Singapore Flyer ticket, Singapore Zoo, Singapore River Cruise, Big Bus Singapore tour, and many more! The pass has a long validity period of 30 days so it will offer you some flexibility on your schedule.

The Fun Top Things to Do in Singapore?

Come and check out this list of the top things to do in Singapore which features the best activities and tours in the city and more! (Use code AILEEN5OFF to save 5% off when checking out!)

Now, I’m NOT telling you to do all of the below activities in one go, because that’s just impossible. Sure, Singapore may be a small mega city but it still holds tons of attractions and activities.

So what I suggest instead is that you pick 1 or 2 categories below (colored green, depending on your preference), and then you either do all the activities under it or a few (depending on how long your layover is).

◘◘ The Typical Hotspots

Singapore Layover: Marina Bay Sands

Marina Bay Sands: This is an iconic resort complex that faces Marina Bay in Singapore and it features The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands Mall, a museum, two large theatres, restaurants, Crystal Pavillions, art-science exhibits, casinos and so much more!

  • SkyPark Observation Deck = Providing breathtaking panoramic views over the city, this observation deck also has the world’s longest elevated swimming pool with a vanishing edge (a.k.a. infinity pool) that’s located 191 meters above the ground. (You can only swim in it though if you’re a guest of the hotel; but still and the same, this is a great spot to be in and you can buy entry tickets through this link ).
  • Spectra Light Show = This is an amazing outdoor light and water show that’s displayed along the promenade. The show happens at 8PM and 9PM on Sunday to Thursday, and at 8PM, 9PM and 10PM on Fridays and Saturdays. (If you ask me, it’s better to watch this show from the other side of Marina Bay Sands).

Gardens by the Bay: This mystical oasis features more than 500,000 plants and about 18 Avatar-like Supertrees that will take your breath away! To book entrance tickets for this as a part of your Singapore layover, go here . Take note that there are a LOT of attractions here but notable of which are the following…

  • SuperTree Grove: These Avatar-ish trees light up at night and have a music and light show at 7:45PM and 8:45PM daily! It’s even possible to have your dinner inside this SuperTree and feel like a modern Tarzan and Jane (or Jake Sully and Neytiri, in line with the Avatar feel).
  • Cloud Forest: This features the world’s tallest indoor waterfall at 35 meters as well as a scenic mist-filled Treetop and Cloud Walk!
  • Flower Dome: This is the largest glass greenhouse in the world as listed in the 2015 Guinness World Records!
  • OCBC Skyway: Placed 22 meters above the ground, this is an amazing stroll that goes through the Gardens and gives you a great view over the Marina Bay skyline as well.

Merlion Park: A landmark that you must NOT miss! Located at One Fullerton, you will find here the iconic Merlion, a mythical creature with a lion’s head and the body of fish — a widely used mascot of Singapore

Singapore Flyer: Reaching a height of 40 stories, I recommend riding this Ferris Wheel at night to have an amazing view over the entire Marina Bay. You can also try their signature drinks here such as the famous ‘Singapore Sling’ that dates back over 100 years! Also, unlike typical Ferris Wheel rides, the capsules here are huge. (Book your tickets here ) .

Singapore Botanic Gardens: A 158-year-old tropical garden that is honored as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Singapore’s first!). You will love the fact that entrance here is FREE from 5AM to 12AM (except for the National Orchid Garden – the park’s crown jewel – which is open 8:30AM to 7PM and charges SGD 5).

ArtScience Museum: This place is that giant white flower-like building that you see on Marina Bay and it is famous for its varied art and science exhibitions. One of the most popular of which is the Future World exhibition for its impressive light set-ups (in collaboration with teamLab, a renowned Japanese interdisciplinary art collective). Entrance here typically starts from USD $9~ and you can grab discounted rates if you book online .

S.E.A. Aquarium: This is said to be the biggest aquarium in the world that features state-of-the-art facilities that let you explore the depths of the oceans and glimpse at several sea creatures. (Book your tickets here ).

◘◘ For Shopaholics

Singapore Food

The Shoppes in Marina Bay Sands: As one of the largest shopping malls in Singapore, this should be on your Singapore layover itinerary if you want to do some luxurious shopping

Orchard Road: This is a 2.2-kilometer-long major road in the city that is regarded as a famous shopping street. It holds a lot of fashion favorites, specialist stores, and so much more

Haji Lane: Considered a ‘hipster’ neighborhood, you will love the boutique shops in this area (not to mention the impressive wall art).

◘◘ For Nightlife

Clarke Quay: This is a historical riverside in the city that is now a hotspot for bars, clubs, and restaurants

Orchard Road: After dark, the party animals come out to play at Orchard Road too! Be sure to check out Emerald Hill Road.

◘◘ For Foodies

Singapore is passionate about food and you will find some of the best places in the following areas:

The Old Airport Road Hawker Centre: This is one of the biggest hawker centers and which a lot of Singaporeans swear by given its long history! You can never go wrong in any of the stalls as you try some of the famous Singapore food items such as chili crab, chicken rice, char kway teow (stir-fried rice cake), lor mee (noodle dish), satay (skewered and grilled meat), and rojak (salad dish) among many others.

Kampong Glam: This is a neighborhood in the city that’s filled with watering holes, cafes, and restaurants to fill up your tummy. One of the places you must not miss is Zam Zam in order to try their murtabak (stuffed pancake) that has been famous since 1908.

Chinatown: This ethnic enclave is also a place that you must witness, other than its distinct Chinese cultural elements, you should enjoy the area by grabbing a bite at one of the hawker stalls and a drink too in places such as Tea Chapter. Don’t forget to buy some Chinese souvenirs! (Want a guided tour? Reserve your spot online now! )

Little India: As the name suggests, this is the center of the Indian community in Singapore. While here, head over to Serangoon Road to enjoy the atmosphere, and don’t forget to try fish head curry!

Singapore Cable Car and Sky Dinner: If you’re still in the city during nighttime, I suggest riding the Cable Car Sky Network to soar above the city’s views and then have a romantic dinner. (Book this experience here ) .

Wondering what Singapore food or dishes that you must absolutely try? Check out this blog post to find out: Top Singapore Food Dishes to Try & Where

◘◘ For Out-of-the-City Places

Universal Studios Singapore

Pulau Ubin: If you’ve got the time during your Singapore layover, go ride a bumboat to reach Pulau Ubin, a nearby island that is famous for its wildlife, cycle trails, and footpaths. Truth be told, this might just be the last real ‘kampung’ (village) in Singapore and you will love its unspoiled and rustic charm.

MacRitchie Nature Trail: This is a gateway to the city’s natural reserves and it is a well-known spot for nature lovers and exercise enthusiasts. One of the things you must try here is their Treetop Walks, a 250-meter aerial suspension bridge that spans the two highest points within MacRitchie. (Nearest train station: Marymount).

◘◘ For Families

Sentosa Island: Not only for the kids but also for the ‘kids-at-heart’, this island resort off the southern coast is a leisure place filled with fun and recreation! (Nearby train station: Harbourfront). Here are just some of the many things you can do here…

  • (Book your tickets here .)

Singapore Zoo: Occupying 28 hectares of land within the city’s heavily forested area, this zoo has an “open concept” which means that you and your kids will get to closely experience the wonders of nature given that the animals here roam freely in their natural habitats. (Book your tickets here ).

Night Safari: This is the best way to see the world’s nocturnal animals. As a unique night safari experience and the world’s first nocturnal zoo, you can also board a tram that goes through the 86-acre rainforest! Don’t miss out on this unique experience! (Book your tickets here ).

River Safari: Can’t get enough of the wildlife? Make a stop at Asia’s first and only river-themed wildlife park where you can encounter manatees, giant pandas, and other creatures! (Book your tickets here .)

◘◘ NEW: Visit Changi Airport’s Jewel

Jewel Changi Airport

Opened in 2019, Jewel Changi Airport is the newest 10-level glass-dome complex that has an array of attractions not limited to gardens, a hotel, aviation facilities, and 300 retail and dining facilities. Some things that you must NOT miss out on are…

  • HSBC Rain Vortex : The world’s tallest indoor waterfall at 40 meters high and the nucleus of Jewel. Open daily from 8AM to 12:30AM.
  • Canopy Bridge: Suspended 23 meters above ground, with a glass bottom at the center portion for a gripping vantage point, the Canopy Bridge is sure to thrill and impress.
  • ManuLife Sky Nets: Experience the thrill of being almost weightless as you leap about this giant net! Stretching 250 meters long, even little ones can safely indulge in free play. At its highest point 8 meters above Canopy Park, you’ll feel like you can reach the sky.
  • Discovery Slides: As the name implies, this is a fun playground but also an amazing work of art!

Singapore Travel Guide

» best time to visit.

Much like most of Southeast Asia , Singapore is customarily hot and humid all year long but with the following months having pronounced differences:

  • October to January : Wettest months
  • February to April: A bit more pleasant
  • May to June: Hottest months
  • July to September: Most festive season and typically the best months

» Getting in to Singapore

By air. As Southeast Asia’s (SEA’s) largest aviation hub, the main airport, Changi Airport (SIN), is known to many. In order to find the best flight deals from your point of origin, I recommend browsing through Skyscanner .

From the airport, there are a number of ways to reach the city:

  • Airport Shuttle : There are Ground Transport Desks in every terminal with different transport options (limousine, 4-seater, etc.) , but if you want to avoid the lines, you can already book online .
  • Private Transfer : Apart from taxis, you can get round-trip transfers from the airport and also book this arrangement online .
  • You can purchase an SG Tourist Pass to get unlimited travel on MRT and LRT lines as well as buses for a number of days.

By land. The country is linked by 2 land crossings to Peninsular Malaysia namely the Causeway and the Second Link. You can drive in your own car, ride a bus or even a taxi (but only specially-licensed ones) . Otherwise, there is a shuttle train service from Malaysia through Keretapi Tanah Melayu (Malayan Railay or KTMB).

By sea. Singapore has 5 ferry terminals: HarbourFront (formerly World Trade Centre) near Sentosa, Marina Bay Cruise Centre in Marina Bay, Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal on the East Coast, as well as Changi Ferry Terminal and Changi Point Ferry Terminal, both at the eastern side of the island near the airport. These terminals all link to Indonesia’s province of Riau Islands and the Malaysian state of Johor.

» Visa for Singapore

Most nationalities can enter Singapore without a visa. For more information, you can check this link. But if you’re from the Philippines like me, we are issued visas on arrival for stays of up to 30 days, whether it’s for touristic or business purposes.

Meanwhile, passengers of eligible nationalities may also qualify for VFTF (Visa Free Transit Facility) if the prevailing entry requirements are met. Assessment for this entry is determined by the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers at the point of entry. (For more information, please see here ).

  • Check full visa requirements here as per your nationality.

» Where to Stay (Singapore Accommodations)

To search for the best hotel accommodation in Singapore at the best prices, I suggest cross-checking hotel prices between Agoda and Booking.com . But if you’re rather interested in renting comfortable houses or apartments, you should search through AirBnB .

» Singapore Currency

Singapore dollar (sign: S$; code: SGD) wherein USD$1 is equal to about SGD 1.30~ or Php 48~ (this is as of 2021). In the event that you want to exchange your money for SGD, I highly advise that you do NOT exchange your money at the airport since the rates there are not competitive.

  • How to best exchange your currency? Either exchange it at a bank or at a money exchanger in your home country or in the city center. Better yet, just withdraw from an ATM with your debit/credit card — however, you must do one big withdrawal to minimize fees with your bank. Speaking of cards, a lot of establishments accept credit cards but it’s always advisable to have cash on hand because a lot of smaller shops do not accept international credit cards.

» Cost of Travel in Singapore

To give you an idea, you should expect to travel in Singapore with an average daily cost of about USD $45~ per person on a budget, or at least $120~ if you want to experience more comfort in activities, tours, hotels, and more. (Values below show low budget to medium budget ranges).

  • Hotels: $25 to $75 USD / day
  • Food: $8 to $20 USD / day
  • Fun: $10 to $25 USD / day
  • Transport: $3 to $8 per ride

» Leaving Luggage at Changi Airport

All terminals in Singapore Changi Airport have baggage storage and counters — plus, they are available 24 hours! Prices for this typically start at USD$4, so it’s great when you have a Singapore layover. For more information, see here .

» How to Get Around Singapore

Singapore is a small metropolis, so you can either walk (depending on the locations you’re going to) or take the following options:

  • Rail: MRT and LRT trains are cheap and reliable modes of transportation. It’s best to get an EZ-link or Nets FlashPay farecards (this can be bought either from the station or at convenience stores or online ), and fares usually cost from $.80 to $2.20.
  • Bus: These are a bit slower but still great for shorter distances. You can pay in cash or coins but it’s best to pay with your Ez-link or Nets FlashPay card , just don’t forget to tap out or you’ll end up paying the maximum fare.
  • Taxi: The flag down rate starts at $3, anyhow you also opt for an Uber-like service by downloading the Grab ride-hailing app (you can pay by cash or credit card).

Meanwhile, when you’re mapping out your day-to-day route, just use Google Maps because it will show in detail the fastest connections you can do (by walking, by car, by bus, and by train).

» Staying Connected in Singapore

Singapore has one of the fastest internet connections in the world so you’ll be assured of great connections wherever you go. To add, most places even offer FREE WiFi — but in order to consistently stay connected online during your Singapore trip, get your own pocket WiFi or SIM Card .

» Safety in Singapore

Singapore is one of the safest countries in the world with very low crime rates — however , this is NO excuse to get too complacent. ‘Little crime’ does not mean ‘no crime’, so stay vigilant and be “street smart” by using your common sense at all times. Nevertheless, solo travelers don’t have much to worry about in this amazing country.

» Helpful Singapore Phrases

English is widely spoken and it is one of the 4 official languages (the other three being Mandarin, Malay and Tamil). That being said, you won’t have difficulty going around Singapore because everyone speaks English. Nevertheless, below are some helpful Mandarin and Malay phrases.

Yes, immigration usually asks for proof of onward travel — or basically, proof of a flight ticket back to your home country or to any other destination after your stay in Singapore. If flight reservations are enough, you can easily purchase this from OneWayFly for only $16, and then present it to the immigration counter.

You should make your way to your departure gate at least 60 minutes before your flight departure time.

All visitors to Singapore must have a passport that is valid for at least 6 months after their date of arrival in the country.

Singapore typically uses plug type C (two round pins), type G (three rectangular pins in a triangular pattern), and type M (three round pins).  The country operates on a 230V voltage and a frequency of 50Hz.

It is not customary in Singapore to tip. In hotels and some restaurants though, you will sometimes see a 5-10% service charge on your bill.

From LRT to ART: Johor switches gear to autonomous rapid transit system to ease congestion, spur development

analysis Asia

Transport experts believe that in order for the Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit (ART) network to be viable in the long term, it must be integrated with the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link, due to be completed by end-2026, and a possibly revived High-Speed Rail (HSR) project.

JOHOR BAHRU: An autonomous bus-train network running on virtual tracks across roads, bridges and viaducts is Johor’s latest idea to tackle the state’s congestion woes and also boost its economic development.

On Apr 16, Johor Chief Minister Onn Hafiz Ghazi announced that the state government has received royal consent to propose the implementation of a multi-tiered Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system in southern Johor, with the final decision now resting with the federal government.

If confirmed, it will replace the existing plans for a Light Rail Transit (LRT) system as the main spine of the state’s public transport network, a change that transport analysts have called for in an earlier report by CNA .

singapore transit tours

Together, experts add, these transportation systems will offer travellers from Singapore and within southern Johor a desperately needed alternative to choked highways and a public bus network plagued by poor frequencies and long waiting times.

However some raise concerns over how the ART system could incur “unnecessary” construction costs compared to the LRT.

Observers also say an improved transportation network could transform connectivity and supercharge plans for the Iskandar region as an investment metropolis, with a proposed Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (SEZ) on the horizon set to increase traveller numbers. The region includes four major districts in the southern state - Johor Bahru, Iskandar Puteri, Pasir Gudang and Kulai.

Beyond that, Johor is also on the cusp of implementing the special financial zone (SFZ) in Forest City - which Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said could allow Johor’s economy to outpace that of other Malaysian states in the next one to two years.

With the changes afoot, the various transportation systems will offer travellers from Singapore and within southern Johor a desperately needed alternative to choked highways and a public bus network plagued by poor frequencies and long waiting times.

“By carefully planning and integrating the ART system with the RTS Link and potentially the HSR, southern Johor can create a robust and efficient public transportation network that benefits residents, businesses, and the overall economy,” Associate Professor Nor Aziati Abdul Hamid, senior researcher at the Universiti Tun Hussein Onn’s Centre of Excellence for Rail Industry (ICoE-Rail), told CNA.

WHAT IS A MULTI-TIERED ART SYSTEM?

Transport experts CNA spoke to said that the ART system conventionally is an autonomous train-bus hybrid network running on roads. The carriages, which run on rubber wheels, use sensors to allow the vehicle to automatically follow a route defined by a virtual track.

They cited how the ART system is developed by China rail manufacturing company CRRC, and being used in some cities including Shanghai, Xian, Perth in Western Australia as well as Monterrey in Mexico.

singapore transit tours

Within Malaysia, Sarawak is expected to start running an ART system line from early 2026, with the first phase spanning 27.6 kilometres.

The system has also been trialled in Putrajaya, the country’s administrative centre.

Transport experts added that the multi-tiered system mentioned by Mr Onn Hafiz refers to a hybrid network. Some parts of the system, where traffic is less crowded, will run on the ground while other parts will run on elevated structures like viaducts and bridges.

Assoc Prof Nor Aziati said: “This separation from ground traffic allows for faster speeds and avoids interference with cars and pedestrians.

“Elevated ART is more efficient for high-density areas with frequent ridership such as Johor Bahru,” Assoc Prof Nor Aziati added, while explaining that for lower-density areas such as Kulai and Nusajaya, the ART network may run on the roads.

Public Transport Users Association president Ajit Johl told CNA that the multi-tiered aspect is key to the success of the implementation of the ART due to the congestion during peak hours in southern Johor.

He added that public buses in Johor Bahru currently run on a poor frequency of every 45 minutes, and this can largely be attributed to the congestion.

“The traffic is a bit of a bottleneck in many parts of JB, especially Jalan Wong Ah Fook in downtown JB and the surrounding expressways. So this form of mass transport such as the ART, with proper frequencies and reasonable fares, could encourage many Johoreans to stop driving and switch to public transport instead,” said Mr Johl.

“If you drive it takes 45 minutes but if you use ART it will be 20 minutes hopefully. People will switch away from cars, especially with the government reportedly keen on removing fuel subsidies,” he added.

ART COULD BOOST JOHOR’S LONG-TERM GOALS AS INVESTMENT DESTINATION

Mr Johl highlighted that good connectivity and lower congestion are key factors that influence a company’s decision to invest, and with both the SEZ and SFZ on the horizon, the potential implementation of the ART is timely to alleviate these concerns.

“If I’m an investor and I’m going to open a plant that requires 1,000 workers and with congestion there will be mobility issues and they might report late, this is going to be an issue. Imagine every worker reports 10 minutes late, there will be (a) productivity dip,” he said.

“The availability of a good public transport system is quite basic for any city that wants to become an international metropolis. It will be good if Johor gets this box ticked,” added Mr Johl.

Transport analyst Rosli Khan echoed similar sentiments, stressing that the ART network could be the game-changer that resolves southern Johor’s transport concerns and shows foreign investors that they mean business.

However, the managing director of MDS Consultancy told CNA that this is contingent on the fact that the ART network is seamlessly linked to the RTS station in Bukit Chagar, similar to how the Mass Rapid Transit system is linked to the RTS station on the Singapore side in Woodlands North.

He added that the network must also be connected to other key landmarks such as Senai International Airport as well as Larkin, a densely populated town close to the city centre.

“That is the correct way of looking at it from providing connectivity and seamless travel point of view. It has to be integrated and if at all possible, (the ART station) must be maintained on the same floor (as the RTS station) for ease of access. Otherwise escalators and lifts need to be provided,” said Dr Rosli.

Assoc Prof Nor Aziati agreed that the ART stations and RTS stations must be near or directly connected for the system to be useful for business travellers or workers from Singapore.

“This would allow for seamless transfers between the two systems, encouraging travellers from Singapore to explore Johor further using the ART. The ART could act as a feeder system for the RTS Link, bringing passengers from suburbs and outlying areas to the main connection point with Singapore,” she added.

Art over lrt: the right choice .

While pivoting from a much faster LRT system to an ART network may be underwhelming for some, transport experts told CNA that the Johor state government has made the correct practical choice taking into consideration costs as well as the needs of southern Johor.

Citing ballpark estimates from industry sources, Assoc Prof Nor Aziati outlined that the multi-tiered ART system with elevated structures could cost around US$100 million (RM476.50) per km while large-scale elevated LRT systems could cost up to US$200 million per km.

She added that ART systems which operate on the ground level are much cheaper at US$20 million per km.

Assoc Prof Nor Aziati noted however that the LRT is able to travel at higher speeds than the ART. She noted that based on industry estimates, the LRT speed range is between 40 to 80 kilometres per hour while that of the ART is between 30 to 60 kilometres per hour.

She added that the LRT is also able to handle a larger passenger volume of around 200-300 passengers per train while ART capacities are generally between 100-200.

However, she maintained that an ART system could suffice for southern Johor given that the population density of the area is much lower than the Klang Valley and that some areas such as Kulai and Nusajaya are not very crowded.

The researcher also outlined that ART takes a much quicker time to construct, with projects able to be completed within three years. Meanwhile, she added that LRT construction timelines could span between five to 10 years.

Assoc Prof Nor Aziati said that since the RTS Link is due to be completed soon and the SEZ could be implemented in the short term, the Johor state government might have decided on ART as it is crucial to have a good public transportation in place in time for these initiatives.

MDS Consultancy’s Dr Rosli agreed that ART was the right choice over LRT due to cost concerns and how the federal government’s priorities are to reduce national debt and alleviate cost of living issues across the country.

However, he maintained that the decision to build a multi-tiered ART system rather than a normal ART system which operates on the ground was perplexing.

“This is unnecessary - an ART system does not require an overhead track to operate. If done in this way, the dedicated overhead road will be expensive and more challenging to build, and will require more space for stations (and) escalators for passengers to access,” said Dr Rosli.

“Plus we don't want an ugly city full of structures and columns that block our views, shophouses and buildings,” he said.
