Beautiful forest with so much to explore. Guide had great communication ahead of tour. Met me at the bus station and drove us straight to the forest. Friendly and knowledgeable about the forest itself and local history. Special interest in birds if that is something you're keen on. He helped me spot all kinds of wildlife and vegetation. We also had a lovely homemade lunch and swim next to the river, and then relaxed and watched a family of rare birds frolic around us. One of my most memorable afternoons on my trip to Sri Lanka. It was really great. He is a funny guy and we laughed much together. He told us much about the nature, culture and people. We enjoyed trekking with him very much. [...] -->

Knowledgeable guide to the forest. He knows everything, the best swimming holes, english and latin names for most plants and animals (great and small) and has a keen eye to spot motionless critters in the shade, including leeches. The cost of the guide includes the fee for park entry so you won't get it much cheaper elsewhere. [...] -->

I already given a 5-star rating , but I also wanted to provide my two cents in case anyone is unsure about purchasing this theme. Biodiversity of Sinharaja rainforest

Sinharaja forest reserve of Sri Lanka  is a paradise owing to its depth of endemic fauna and flora collection. Sinharaja rainforest is a UNESCO world heritage site and the last remaining primaeval rainforest with about 50% of its fauna and flora endemic to the island.

Bird watching in the Sinharaja rainforest

Birds both resident and migratory flock to the canopy, especially between December and April. A large number of foreign travellers as well as local tourists come to explore the Sinharaja rainforest every day, Sinharaja is a part of most nature tours and bird-watching tours and is also included in most Sri Lanka adventure tour itineraries because it is one of the best places to enjoy the fauna and flora of Sri Lanka including a large number of birds, butterflies, insects, and vertebrates. If you are interested in Bird watching it is strongly recommended to start the trip early morning from Colombo.

We are using the Kudawa-Sinharaja trail on this one-day trip, which is the most scenic and popular trail among travelers. This trail is about 8 km in length and takes you past some of the most scenic areas of the Forest. The trek leads to Sinhagala, a high-altitude peak in the Forest. This is an advanced trek and it requires a good amount of physical and mental fitness to cover.

Robert – February 16, 2024 :

Beyond description would be the extent to which my spouse and I delighted in our Sinharaja rainforest excursions. We have not previously embarked on such an excursion nor experienced such an exceptional experience. Our guide was an absolute delight to be around and was incredibly laid-back and courteous. Our time spent with him enhanced our vacation and rainforest experience tremendously.

Ganga – January 10, 2024 :

The excursion was precisely as planned, and we had just completed the walk prior to the deluge; Kamal, our guide, was exceptionally kind and accommodating.

lemanski – November 16, 2023 :

Our experience with the Sinharaja forest tour, which was a one-day excursion departing from Colombo, was quite satisfying. Entering the breathtaking Sinharaja Rainforest was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that was truly unforgettable. It is not a good idea to travel to the forest without a guide because there are hundreds of different species of trees, plants, birds, insects, lizards, spiders, and other creatures that you may encounter there. You need someone to give you some insight into some of these things. During our time in the forest, our guide not only spoke English quite well but also discovered a great number of small animals that I would have never seen otherwise. There were a great number of blue butterflies there, and the waterfall was just stunning. Did some swimming in this refreshing pond. Because the excursion was so effectively organized, I would unquestionably suggest that these individuals go on the Sinharaja trek; they are really great.

Chiara Usman – November 9, 2023 :

We wanted to have private and short trip from our beach resort we wanted to do something different from the usual beaches and temple tour of Sri lanka. Before arrive in Sri Lanka we had explored about Sri Lankan forests and was impressed by the reviews of this tour. We are super happy with the trip and had a thoroughly enjoyable 4 hours of trekking as part of quick tour package.

Ramidu – August 9, 2023 :

The hike was not as difficult as I thought, but you do need to step over logs occasionally. I saw a large mnumber of creatures during the hike.

Rudmila – May 2, 2023 :

Our day trip to rainforest started from Colombo early morning and it was just a 3 hours drive to the rainforest from Colombo. We were able to explore the rainforest at our own face as there was no other guests in the group on that day. It was bit raining and ground was soaked with water but it was fine as we were wearing shoes. Our guide Rita gave a a magical mix which kept the leeches away from us.

Manfred – April 25, 2023 :

  • Lankagama – Entry to 5 waterfalls, namely Brahmana Waterfall, Uran Watunu Waterfall, Gal Oruwa Waterfall, Thattu Waterfall, and Duuvili Waterfall. If you want to know more about the hike to these waterfalls, you can check the waterfall tour guide .
  • Petedenia entrance – The second most popular entrance after the Rathnapura Kudava entrance. Great for bird-watching tours.
  • Wathugala – Entry to 3 waterfalls Kekuna Ella Waterfall, Pathan Oya Waterfall, and Malmora Waterfall.
  • Rathnapura Kudawa entrance – The main and popular entrance to two hiking trails, the short Mulawella and the longer and epic Sinhala trail.
  • Morning side (Bungalow entrance) – We don’t have many details about this entrance.

The 3 entrances of Lankagama, Petedenia, and Wathugala are at a walkable distance from each other. I visited all the 3 entrances during the hike. However, I’m not familiar with the other two.

Related: Sinhraja Rainforest also offers a night hike or night tour . So we went for it, and it was perhaps one of the most thrilling and profound experiences we’ve ever had. Know more about what went down and how you can experience the same in this guide .

Where To Eat?

Mederipitiya is a small village where there are not many dining options available. But some shops sell snacks, cool drinks, and other necessities. Dishes like Kothu, fried rice, rotis, rice, etc., are available in a nearby village called Pallegama.

The best option for you is to get food from your place of stay. For example, if you’re in a homestay, you can get fresh food there. On the other hand, if you’ve put up in a resort, you can check out their menu and get what you want. However, the food served by your accommodation will be a bit expensive.

Where To Stay?

If you opt for the tour from Mederipitiya (Which includes Lankagama, Petedenia, and Wathugala entrances), there are many homestays and resorts in the region. I stayed at Hostel 114 , a walkable distance from Mederipitiya. The hospitality was excellent, and we highly recommend you stay here. Another place you can stay is the Sinharaja Forest Gate Hotel.

Some things to check before booking accommodation in Sinharaja Rainforest.

  • Some budget stays don’t offer Wi-Fi. So be sure to check that.
  • Few of them provide FREE Breakfast. You get to taste the local homemade cuisine.
  • If your stay is in a remote location, ensure dining options are accessible to you. Otherwise, choose a stay near the bus stop where you can get some snacks and rotis, at the very least.
  • If you’re traveling with friends, kids, or family, ensure you can access the local tuk-tuk services.

Here are a few other recommendations.

  • Sinharaja Vini Villa ($)
  • 360 Rainforest ($)
  • Sinharaja Forest Gate ($)
  • Cinnamon Village Sinharaja ($$)
  • Sinharaja Kurulu Ella Eco Resort ($$)

Best Time To Visit

Fallen trees at Sinharaja Rainforest

Although you can visit the tropical rainforest throughout the year, the best time to visit Sinharaja is between December and March. The weather is perfect for going on hikes, watching birds, and visiting the waterfalls. However, between May and September, the forest sees heavy rainfall, which increases Gin Ganga’s water flow. Due to this, you can’t go near the waterfalls but only admire them.

The entry fee to the Sinharaja Rainforest for foreigners is LKR 1200 for adults and LKR 600 for children. No discounts for SAARC countries. For the Sri Lankan nationals, the entry fee is LKR 120 for adults and LKR 60 for children.

The Sinharaja Rainforest opens at 8 AM and closes at 6 PM. The tickets are strictly checked at all the entrances upon entry.

The Guide Charges

You cannot enter the Sinharaja Rainforest without a guide. Guides are mandatory. You can arrange for the guide by requesting the accommodation. They usually have contacts of the local guides or ask for one at the ticket counter.

My guide was Hemal. He has been serving as a guide for 13+ years now and has very good knowledge of the flora and fauna. He is sharp and points out wild animals from a great distance.

Contact Number: +94 705989717 (Hemal speaks Sinhala and English)

Below are the charges mentioned on a per-person basis. The fare includes the entry fee, guide charges, leech socks, snacks, and a rain jacket.

  • Short tour for 3-4 hours that covers 6 Km – LKR 6250
  • Medium tour for 5-6 hours that covers 10 Km – LKR 8250
  • 5 Waterfalls tour for a full day – LKR 9500
  • Long tour for 7-8 hours that covers 14 Km – LKR 11250
  • Lion’s Rock hike for 8-9 hours that covers 24 Km – LKR 15250
  • A birdwatching tour for half a day costs LKR 5000, and for a full day, it costs LKR 10000
  • Night tour for 3 hours – LKR 5000

I opted for the night tour and waterfall tour , the best choices ever.

Parking Facilities

There are no dedicated parking facilities available near the entrances. You’ll have to park by the side of the road, not hindering the other vehicles that pass by.

Restroom Facilities

There are restrooms available at all the entrances of the Sinharaja rainforest. They are clean and well-maintained.

Network Availability

Dialog and SLT Mobitel have very good internet connectivity inside the rainforest. Unfortunately, Airtel doesn’t work here.

ATM Availability

There are no ATMs available in the village of Mederipitiya. You have to go to Deniyaya, which is about 40 minutes away.

Important Things To Remember

Gin Ganga river

  • It rains throughout the year, all 365 days, in different parts of the rainforest. So carry your raincoats with you while visiting.
  • There are freshwater streams to refill your water bottles. Carry at least a 1L reusable water bottle with you.
  • Do not litter. Bring back the waste with you and dispose of it properly.
  • Do not pluck the leaves or flowers or do any activity that might harm nature. Be responsible for conserving nature and wildlife.
  • The rainforest is full of leeches. Learn how to get rid of them the right way .
  • Bring your swimsuits as you might cross waterfalls during your journey where you can swim.
  • You are going to hike inside the dense rainforest. So, make sure to dress appropriately. It is recommended to wear full pants and T-shirts covering your shoulders.
  • The terrain is slippery, with wet leaves, tree branches, boulders, and water streams. Make sure to wear shoes with good traction and grip: no slippers or sandals.

Author richard wilson, guide | nature | water falls | wild life, november 11, 2020.

Sinharaja Rainforest

Some people want to be close to nature and want to bathe in natural water bodies. If that’s YOUR plan, then you must go to Sinharaja Rainforest. Break free from the plastic world, and enter the most promising island. Sinharaja Rain Forest is known for its oozing beauty. The flowing streams and lush greenery are calling you!

Sri Lanka is an island that offers you a multitude of activities. If you are a wildlife enthusiast, there are a number of national parks. In case you enjoy drinking tea, the tea estate is a fabulous place to be. Just in case you want some beach fun, there are a number of beaches. Some couples and families want to experience true luxury and so, they can stay in one of the prime resorts that has private pool villas.

Sinharaja Rain Forest , considered as the last primary forest on the island, is located in the low-lying wetland of southwestern Sri Lanka. This rainforest, which contains an incredible variety of flora and fauna, stretches over a series of valleys and ridges crossed by a multitude of rivers, between 200 and 1300 meters above sea level.

A walk in this evergreen rainforest and a swim in the waterfall will leave you with an unforgettable experience! Here is an elaborate post on Sinharaja Rainforest. We would be delighted to share all the information with our beloved readers!

It will help you to plan your tour in a systematic fashion. So, gear up for the upcoming adventure and grab a bowl of popcorn. We promise to fill your mind with useful information. Plus, you might just get tempted to visit Sri Lanka just to see the beauty of Sinharaja Rainforest.

About Sinharaja

Sinharaja has long withstood logging because of its inaccessibility, before becoming a world biosphere reserve in 1978, then a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. Before that, this strip of forest (21 km long and 3.7 km wide) was only a tiny part of the great jungle that covered the hills of southwestern Sri Lanka over more than 100,000 hectares.

The Sinharaja Rain Forest reserve is a miraculous sketch of what was once the forest cover of the island, before it gave way to the large plantations of coffee, rubber and tea. The average height of the trees varies between 30 and 45 meters, and the proportion of endemic species is staggering. Of the 211 trees and lianas identified, 139 are endemic to Sri Lanka, while of the 25 endemic ferns in the country, 13 are in the reserve.

If we talk about the animal species, there are in total 830 species of flora and fauna at Sinharaja. In other words, this rainforest holds sheer beauty. You will find birds and reptiles of all kinds! Bird photographers will be overjoyed to be here because they can spot birds of different colors. You might even hear a bird singing here!

Birds sing when they are relaxed and chirpy. They might be calling their mate or they are just in a good mood! Ornithologists believe that birds sing early in the morning because there is less activity and noise outside. At Sinharaja, the birds get plenty of reasons to sing. Maybe they are just trying to attract their mate or want to put up a show for you.

No matter what the reason is, Sinharaja will welcome you with open arms. The question is – How to reach Sinharaja? There are many questions hovering over your mind. We shall be answering every query in this post. Let’s begin with modes of transportation.

How to Reach Sinharaja?

There are two entrances: Waddagala and Deniyaya .

The first entrance is easier to access if you arrive from the North-West, the second is best if you come from the South.

If you are away from the pre-mentioned entrances, you can opt for taking a bus to get to Sinharaja. The price would be about 180 roupees ($2.4) per person. A journey may take long hours depending on where you are staying.

If you are staying inside Deniyaya or Waddagala , you will then go for a tuk-tuk. It will cost you about 200 rupees ($2.7) to get to the Rainforest Lodge.

In case you are in Colombo, plan a day tour to Sinharaja Rainforest. Choose a legit tour guide operator and they will show you the best Sinharaja has to offer. To reach the entrance of Sinharaja, it takes about 3 hours. Ideally, most of the Sinharaja tours start early in the morning. You will be leaving from Colombo at 5 AM.

Note – Please have your breakfast before leaving or carry your breakfast along with you. Ideally, eat it while you are traveling. Eating in the rainforest and littering is not recommended. The Sinharaja Rainforest trekking trip lasts for about 5 hours. Since you will be walking inside the rainforest, make sure you wear comfortable clothing and shoes.

This brings us to another question – Why should you be visiting Sinharaja Rainforest? We will give you five reasons to visit the rainforest.

Five Reasons to Visit Sinharaja Forest

Since this is a complete guide, we would like to share each and every detail with you. Sinharaja Rainforest is undoubtedly beautiful, but there is more to it.

Unspoiled Natural Beauty

Among the forests of Sri Lanka, it is certainly the most beautiful. Start by a simple walk in Sinharaja and you will be immediately amazed! The fabulous characteristics of Sinharaja result from exceptional natural benefits. Dependent on an important hydrography, it has many valleys. The micro-flora present in the soil is very adapted to the proliferation of plant species.

You will find mammals, reptiles, insects, birds, and all kinds of flowers and trees here. It is a visual treat for sore eyes! If you ever plan to head to Sri Lanka, this is the place you need to explore. Yes, it requires a lot of walking, but you will enjoy the process. Since the natural beauty is intoxicating, you will not even feel tired.

Its flora is extraordinary

Why do you think people go to a forest? Isn’t it to see plants, among others? The main richness of Sinharaja is its superb vegetation, indeed. Extremely lush, it will charm you every time. If Sinharaja were a football team, his jersey would be green. You will be full of admiration for his fantastic canopy.

There you will be privileged. You will see 16 very rare endemic species like calamus, caryota, and shorea . It is almost a record. For those who have already been to West Africa, you will see among the 830 flora species of the forest the famous oil palm. It is an invaluable and highly sought after wealth that will be within your reach.

An adorable fauna lives there

Similar to a humanitarian center, the bright vegetation of Sinharaja welcomes a bunch of animals. Forest density can easily scare away an uninformed visitor. Yet, your ability to read between the lines will allow you to discover a magical show! You will witness an exceptional zoology. Imperial leopards will be visible, which generally do not allow to be disturbed by the movements of footsteps and the crackling of the cameras.

However, do not let yourself be overwhelmed by the swells of admiration, they remain wild animals! In heaven, it is an incessant ballet of contingents of birds that will keep you breathless. Reptiles, butterflies and amphibians will also be in the game. Bird photographers will get a visual treat here. There are a number of birds that fly around in the dense rainforest. Do you want to get a glimpse of the beautiful birds? Here’s a video that showcases the different birds you can find within the rainforest. Notice the colors on them and the peace in their eyes.

Hopping from one branch to another, bathing in the rain, and trying to find the perfect fruit to feast on.

You can find the following birds here:

  • Emerald Dove
  • Orange Minivet
  • Sri Lankan Drongo
  • Square-tailed Bulbul
  • Legge’s Flowerpecker
  • Hanging Parrot
  • Lesser Goldenback
  • Yellow-fronted Barbet

The list goes on, actually. You will find a variety of birds here! Perhaps bird photographers would need to spend the entire day in the rainforest to capture the beauty of all the birds. Please ensure that you do not turn your flash on. Also, maintain safe distance from the birds and do not shout or scream. It is the habitat of reptiles and birds! Never disturb them while they are resting or enjoying the rain.

It is a magnificent botanical conservation site

Human encroachment on the land of biodiversity has created many problems. Countless species are threatened today. Science therefore needs a truly protected space to allow for the reconstitution of endangered plant populations. The Sinharaja reserve is the right place to do that. Hence, you can experiment and conserve. It is much protected and therefore very conducive. Many laws are made to make this reserve a real strength.

You can do trekking there

The illustration is the best way to appropriate certain situations. Nothing beats a hike in this reserve. It is the door open to all fantasies. An immersion that you will not soon forget! You will be in touch with many jewels placed at your disposal by nature! There are two villages to the west of the reserve, Parankandeniya and Kolomthota . You can visit there.

It will be an opportunity to see new lifestyles, while remaining in touch with biodiversity. The sharing of culture that you will witness will surely edify you! Although Sri Lanka is a wonderful destination to visit all through the year, but there is a specific peak season for every coast. The next question that comes to your mind is the following – When should I visit Sinharaja Rainforest?

Find the answer in the next section!

Before you move forward, check out this video which was shot in the year 2017. You can find that the travelers witnessed a number of birds and reptiles. Even though it is raining, the travelers are enjoying the brilliant weather and the lush greenery. That’s the USP of Sinharaja Rainforest – the never-ending greenery! It is breathtaking for anyone who enjoys watching nature from up close.

Here’s another video for all you readers!

The vlogger explored the rainforest and captured the true beauty of the rainforest. She has covered every beautiful aspect of Sinharaja. Don’t skip the video! When you see the vlog, you will find that the trek is quite exciting. Travelers have to trek till the waterfall! You can dip your feet in the water and even find some rare reptiles around the area. Once again, you should ensure that you wear trekking gear such as walking shoes and comfortable clothing.

Exploring The Rivers And Animals In Sinharaja

The waterways in Sinharaja flow into the famous Gin River. This is towards the Southern boundary of Sinharaja. It goes into Kalu Ganga via Kudawa Ganga, Napola Dola, and Koskulana Ganga towards the Northern boundary. You will find small water bodies as well as waterfalls within the acres of land. That’s why the mammals and birds enjoy being here because they have unlimited fresh water supply! On second thoughts, travelers love the waterfalls in Sinharaja. These are great spots to click Insta-worthy pictures.

Tourists from all over the globe visit Sinharaja and they demand to see the waterfalls inside the rainforest. It is a true highlight! You can dip in your feet, breathe fresh air, and sing with the birds. It is extremely peaceful and blissful for nature lovers! If you are wondering what animals are present within the rainforest, you can find wild pigs, mouse deer, Indian elephant, purple-face langur, and fishing cat. Yes, Sri Lanka houses the magnificent leopard too, but the sightings are rare within the rainforest.

Please note that it is safe to walk inside the rainforest, but you should take the help of a tour guide. The most commonly spotted animal in Sinharaja is the barking deer. Beware of the snakes that slither around the rainforest. They will not harm you unless you harm them. Cobras, lizards, and vipers are quite common in the rainforest.

Best Time to Visit Sinharaja

The Sinharaja Rain Forest is a tropical forest; there is not necessarily a better period. It can therefore be explored all year round, but it is true that if it rains, the visit will not necessarily be pleasant. On the other hand, your chances of spotting scorpions will be higher.

If we were to recommend a period, the driest months are August and September and from January to early April. It is relatively good in the Sinharaja forest, the average temperature is 24°C with a humidity of 87%.

What to Wear?

Among the friendly little beasts that live in the forest, there are leeches! So, if you are not fan of getting your blood sucked, cover yourself! Wear clothes that cover your arms and legs. If you are still insistent on wearing sleeveless blouses and shorts, you must ensure that you are taking careful steps. A tour guide will come along with you so it will be easy to navigate. Leech attacks are common, but travelers can wear whatever they like.

However, it is strongly recommended to wear long pants (leggings style) over a good pair of socks (diapers will prevent leeches from passing). Also, remember to take good walking shoes. Good-quality shoes matter! You will be walking around the rainforest for 4-5 hours which means you need the most comfortable pair of shoes. Avoid open shoes because the leeches can attack your foot. Also, there are stones, pebbles, and muck in the rainforest. You would not want your feet to get dirty or injured!

Finally, in a rainforest, your best friend will be your K-way. Wear whatever you like, but be careful. Since it is a rainforest, your skin is exposed to reptiles, moisture, and bird droppings.

Exploring The Five Entrances

In total, there are five entrances that you will discover.

2. Morning Side

3. Pitadeniya

4. Lankagama

5. Samangala (new addition)

The most famous is the Pitadeniya entrance. You need to come from Deniyaya. It is one of the most famous and oldest entrances of Sinharaja Rainforest. In this area, you will be exploring three waterfalls. That’s right!

The waterfalls you will discover from Pitadeniya entrance is:

  • Pathan Waterfall
  • Malmora Waterfall
  • Kakuna Waterfall

You can also visit Lankagama entrance just by walking through the rainforest. It is indeed a wonderful experience!

How to Discover Sinharaja?

There are many possibilities of treks, 3 hours, 6 hours or even the whole day. Just tell your guide what you want to see.

The guide, precisely! It is indispensable! It is simple; he knows the forest and knows very well where the animals live. For example, he can easily spot a viper that may be sitting quietly in some place there. Also, do not forget that you are in a rainforest and therefore some animals can be very dangerous. The guide knows how to react to problems.

We have seen travelers who set out on an expedition alone. It is not the wisest idea! You must take a tour guide with you. They will tell you about the best entrance and will also take you to the best waterfalls. Ideally, you must be exploring every waterfall in Sinharaja.

Where To Stay?

There are some options for travelers to stay near the Sinharaja Rainforest. You can also stay in Colombo and come for a day tour. But, if you want to stay close to nature, there are a couple of lodges around here. We can recommend some to you! You can choose as per the budget and personal preferences.

1. Rainforest Eco Lodge – Did you know that the villas are made of containers? That’s right! The villas are comfortable and are quite spacious. All you can hear is the chirping of birds.

2. Rainforest Mount Lodge – This is a nature-loving lodge located in Deniyaya. You can also go for guided nature walks. The rooms have massive balconies through which you can see the mist outside. On second thoughts, it can be a wonderful place to stay for a romantic getaway.

3. Sinharaja Vini Villa – You will get complimentary transport till the Sinharaja rainforest entrance gate. The villa is owned by a family and they offer generous services to the guests. If you want a peaceful abode the for the next 3-4 days, choose Sinharaja Vini Villa.

4. Blue Magpie Lodge – This is another option for tourists. It is closer to the North entrance and offers a stellar view to the guests. The cool breeze and humming of birds will fill your heart with fond feelings. You can stay here with your group as the rooms are decent and are not as expensive. Some of the units have a terrace or a balcony. You can check with the property!

If you want to visit Sinharaja for half a day, consider staying at Colombo or any other place. You can choose a tour guide who would pick you up from the hotel and drive you till the rainforest. Everything can be planned as per your convenience!

But, if you find time, do stay at one of the hotels/lodges in the area. You cannot miss the misty weather near Sinharaja Rainforest. It is a beautiful sight for travelers. You might not even feel like going back where you came from.

Concluding Thoughts

Let’s summarize the elaborate post for you. We will take you through the important details.

You will explore the following inside the rainforest:

  • 150+ species of birds (singing birds, colorful birds, and more)
  • Over 19 species of fishes (present in the rivers of Sinharaja)
  • 7 waterfalls inside Sinharaja Rainforest
  • Rare and common reptiles
  • Lush greenery (your guide will tell you about all the famous trees and flowers inside the rainforest)

You must beware of the leeches inside the rainforest.

Speaking of leeches, there are some pointers that you need to keep in mind (about rainforests):

  • Rainforests have a tropical climate. The name itself is a giveaway. ‘Tropical’ means the weather remains humid and warm. However, in Sinharaja, there is mist and rain time and again.
  • Always get in touch with a guide. Although there are signs that guide you to different spots at the rainforest, but it is advisable to take a local guide along with you. They have been doing the job for years and can tell you more about the plants and trees at Sinharaja.
  • Do your homework before heading to a rainforest. Even though the guide will tell you everything about the rainforest, but never have a clean slate before going. To have a general familiarity is important!
  • Enjoy the experience but also be cautious. The surroundings are new to you! You can have fun, but since it is a rainforest and all types of species can be found here, you need to be careful.
  • Maintaining silence in the rainforest is one way to enjoy yourself. You are not in a club! How about witnessing nature’s beauty? Loud talking can scare the animal species around you. Be quiet and hear the sounds of nature. It is quite satisfying.
  • Animal encounters can be scary. It is good to start for your hiking trip in the morning hours. In the dusk and dawn, there are more chances of coming in contact with insects and snakes. Here’s another reason for you to take a guide along: for your safety.
  • Wear supremely comfortable shoes because it will be a long walk. Ideally, wear something that does not give you a shoe bite. Open shoes should be avoided at all costs! An insect or leech can attack your feet. Some insects love the taste of human blood! Hence, wear shoes that give you a snug fit.
  • Never jump in any lake or waterfall. It is not allowed! Yes, you can dip your feet into the water body, but usually swimming under waterfalls is considered safe. Ask your guide whether you can swim in the water body or not. They will give you the best advice! The rules differ from one place to another.

It is important to hire a good tour guide operator because the rainforest is massive. We hope the article helped you to get a gist of what to expect from Sinharaja Rainforest. So, book a day tour to Sinharaja and don’t forget to carry your NO-FLASH cameras. Please remember to be respectful towards the birds, reptiles and mammals.

Additionally, you must never venture out on your own. A tour guide explains everything that is within the rainforest. Plan your tour and get ready for one of the best tours of your life.

Trip Itinerary

2.00 AM You will be picked up from your hotel in Colombo

6.00 AM Reach Deniyaya/Kudawa

6.30 am Start the tour and prepare for a 4km trek in the gloomy and misty rainforest, where you can find endemic trees, insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Put salt on your shoes beforehand to keep the leaches away – they don’t like it!

7.00 am There’s no mistaking that you’re in the Sinaharaja rainforest when you hear its chorus – no matter what time of year, day or night, there is a constant buzz from the millions of creatures that call it home. Out of all the insects, the cicada might be the loudest. In the gloomy atmosphere, millions of these creatures form the rainforest’s heavy metal rock concert – with an aim of attracting mates with their 100-decibel sound! Their never-ending mating songs regularly confuse birds and other predators, and are a wonder to hear.

9.00 am Expect high humidity and sudden rainfalls in this biome (Rain jackets will be provided). Walk the slippery path under the four-layer canopy at a slow pace and be sure to look out for animals – due to the high density of flora and fauna, they’re not easy to spot, but the Sinaharaja rainforest contains the most diverse range and highest volume of plant and animal life on the island. Try to find the endemic green pit viper, hump nosed viper and marvel at the variety of amphibians, including tree frogs. Invertebrates that can be found include the common birdwing, butterflies and leeches.

11.00 am Enjoy Packed lunch at a stone terrace after diving for a refreshing bath at waterfall – although it’s colder than the sea, which is at least 28 degrees Celsius, it is still lovely. You can also enjoy the jump from the top of the waterfall and impress your friends!

12.30 pm On your way back, target it to spot birds, the giant squirrel and perhaps most observable of mammals - clear views of purple faced leaf monkey as groups of 10-14 high up in the forest. Sinharaja wilderness is rich in birds, recorded 186 species to date. 25 out of 27 species of endemic birds in Sri Lanka may be viewed. Late evening transfer to Colombo.

Sinharaja Forest Reserve

Spanning over 88.64 square kilometers, Sinharaja Forest Reserve is Sri Lanka's largest forest. Famous for its exceptional biodiversity, this majestic tropical rainforest has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as well as a Biosphere Reserve. Sinharaja is a treasure trove of flora and fauna and a precious ecological asset for Sri Lanka. This travel guide will give you an overview of visiting and exploring this remarkable rainforest.

Significance of the Sinharaja Forest Reserve

The Sinharaja Forest Reserve holds great ecological importance for Sri Lanka, playing a crucial role in water security and contributing to the fight against climate change. It serves as a vital water source for two major rivers in the country, the "Gin Ganga" and the "Kalu Ganga," supporting both wildlife and local communities that depend on these rivers.

In addition, Sinharaja makes a significant contribution to Sri Lanka's efforts to combat climate change. The rainforest acts as a "carbon sink," absorbing carbon dioxide emissions and producing fresh oxygen. This becomes increasingly important as the threat of climate change continues to grow.

The rainforest provides an exceptional environment for research and education. Its extraordinary biodiversity and many endemic plants and animals make it a natural laboratory that allows scientists to study unique ecosystems, evolution processes, and the impacts of climate change.

Flora and Fauna

Sinharaja tells a magical tale about the natural history of Sri Lanka. It is home to a wide range of plants and wildlife, many of which can't be found anywhere else on the planet.

The forest is filled with dense and diverse vegetation. More than 60% of the tree species found here are unique to Sri Lanka, and some are extremely rare. The forest boasts tall trees that can grow over 40 meters in height. Beneath these towering trees, you'll find smaller trees, shrubs, ferns, and herbs, creating a lush green tapestry.

The wildlife in Sinharaja is equally fascinating. You can spot many endemic birds of Sri Lanka, such as the Sri Lanka Blue Magpie and the Green-billed Coucal. Mammals like the Purple-faced Langur and the famous Sri Lankan Leopard also call this forest their home. In addition, there is a diverse population of insects, reptiles, and amphibians, adding more layers of complexity to the forest's ecosystem.

Sinharaja's diversity extends to its microhabitats as well. From the high canopy of the forest to the understory and from freshwater streams to rocky areas, each microhabitat supports its own unique set of organisms. These ecosystems within ecosystems contribute to the overall resilience and liveliness of Sinharaja.

Exploring the Sinharaja Forest Reserve

Sinharaja is a destination that offers a unique blend of adventure, relaxation, and education. The main reason people visit is to see and interact with the incredible variety of plants and animals in the forest. Whether you're a birdwatcher, a wildlife enthusiast, or a nature lover, Sinharaja offers a rich array of flora and fauna to discover.

If you like adventure, you can take thrilling hikes on the different trails in the forest. These hikes not only let you see animals but also give you stunning views of the forest and surrounding areas. The Sinhagala and Mulawella peaks are particularly special spots that offer breathtaking views and are worth the climb.

If you prefer a more relaxed experience, consider joining guided nature walks. These walks let you enjoy the forest's beauty at a slow pace while learning about its ecosystems. And remember to take a dip in one of Sinharaja's clear streams to cool off after a long walk.

For those interested in learning, Sinharaja is like a natural classroom. The forest's diverse plants and animals provide valuable lessons about nature and conservation. Most guided tours include informative explanations that help you better understand the forest and its inhabitants.

Exploring Sinharaja is not just about sightseeing; it's about immersing yourself in a rich ecological space, witnessing the majesty of nature, and understanding our role in its preservation. It's an experience that leaves you with a deep appreciation for nature and memories to last a lifetime.

Photography Opportunities

Sinharaja Forest Reserve offers plenty of opportunities for photography enthusiasts. The diverse wildlife, set against the dense greenery and stunning landscapes, presents countless unique scenes waiting to be captured.

The forest is home to various vibrantly colored bird species, including endemic ones like the Sri Lanka Blue Magpie, the Green-Billed Coucal, and the Red-Faced Malkoha, making them excellent subjects. Additionally, the rainforest houses elusive mammals such as the Purple-faced Langur and the Sri Lankan Leopard, which are equally captivating.

However, it's important not to overlook the smaller, quieter elements of the rainforest. Take a moment to admire the beauty of the plants, the subtle interplay of light and shadow on the forest floor, and the animals in their natural habitat. These often unnoticed moments of magic add depth to the experience. When attempting to capture the essence of Sinharaja, remember that patience and respect for wildlife are very important. Approach animals quietly to avoid causing distress, and always remember to leave no trace behind.

Tours and Trails

Exploring Sinharaja Rainforest is a journey of discovery, and guided tours offer the best means to unlock the forest's secrets. These tours are led by local guides who know the forest's trails and animals very well. They share fascinating information about the ecosystem of Sinharaja.

Depending on how fit you are and how curious you are, you can choose from different trails. The Sinhagala Trail is more challenging but offers incredible views and the chance to see many different animals. The Moulawella and Kekuna Ella trails are easier options that still give you a great rainforest experience.

If you prefer to explore at your own pace, there are self-guided trails available. However, keep in mind that the forest can be confusing, with many paths that look similar. Having a guide can help you stay aware of your location.

How to Get There

Getting to Sinharaja is relatively easy whether you're starting your journey from Colombo or Galle. If you're coming from Colombo, the most common route is to take a bus to Kalawana or Ratnapura. From there, you can take a taxi or tuk-tuk to Kudawa, the main entrance to the forest.

If you're in Galle, you can use the Southern Expressway to reach Matara. From Matara, there's a route that will take you to Deniyaya, another access point to Sinharaja.

Although these routes may seem a bit winding, they offer scenic views of landscapes that add to the excitement of your Sinharaja adventure. If you prefer a more comfortable journey, you can hire a private vehicle from major cities in Sri Lanka, which can take you directly to the forest.

When to Visit

Sinharaja Forest Reserve is open to visitors throughout the year. Still, it's recommended to plan your trip considering the rainforest's climate. The months from January to early April and from August to September are generally drier, which makes it easier to explore the trails and increases your chances of seeing wildlife. However, it's important to note that Sinharaja is a rainforest, so occasional showers may still occur during these months.

During the wetter months, the rainforest takes on a different charm. The trees are lush green, the water bodies are full, and the sound of raindrops creates a beautiful symphony throughout the forest. If you are okay with getting a bit wet and muddy, visiting during the wet months can be an exciting experience. Just remember to pack appropriate clothing and gear to handle the rain.

Packing Essentials

  • Go for lightweight, earth-toned clothing to blend in with the surroundings and minimize disturbance to wildlife.

  • Carry a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated during your explorations.
  • Bringing binoculars is an excellent idea for birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts to spot distant or shy creatures.
  • Lastly, take your camera to capture the breathtaking moments that Sinharaja has to offer.

Accommodation Options

There are different types of accommodation options available around Sinharaja to suit various budgets and preferences. If you want to fully immerse yourself in the rainforest experience, you can choose eco-lodges or homestays where you can wake up to the sounds of the forest. These accommodations often follow sustainable practices that align with Sinharaja's conservation values. If you prefer a more luxurious stay, there are boutique resorts nearby. These resorts offer high-quality amenities and can arrange guided tours of the forest. For travelers on a budget, guesthouses and affordable hotels in nearby towns provide comfortable stays at reasonable prices.

No matter where you decide to stay, booking early, especially during busy months, is advisable to secure your preferred accommodation.

Conservation and Responsible Tourism

As a visitor to Sinharaja Rainforest, you have a crucial role in conserving this precious ecosystem. It's important to follow the principles of Leave No Trace to help preserve it:

  • Stick to marked trails.
  • Keep noise to a minimum.

View when driving from Yelisovo airport to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky

The first myth I want to disprove is that getting to Kamchatka is extremely costly. It’s not. Going between February and April, a return flight from Moscow can be had for 11,000 roubles (US$380 / £220). Not bad for 18 hours total flying time. In summer the flights are more expensive but still, if you book them a few months in advance, can be got for 16,000 roubles return.

It’s true, many people will tell you that March and April are the worst months to visit because the snow is starting to melt and everything’s a bit sloshy and dirty in settlements. On the other hand, these are great months for the independent traveller! During winter zimniki (temporary winter roads made of compacted snow or simply frozen river surfaces) open up all over Kamchatka, granting access to communities that in summer are totally isolated. Hitch hiking is possible right from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to the very north of the peninsula. Alternatively, vehicles can be hired in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky from tour firms. Also in the winter or early spring months places can be reached that are away even from the zimniki, either by snowmobile or by the use of cross country skis. For example, Klyuchevskaya Sopka, Eurasia’s largest active volcano, can be accessed from the village of Klyuchi without the need even for a guide by a traveller with a pair of cross country skis. Bears do not wake up until mid-April so this is not a danger, but bears almost never attack anyone anyway.

The main disadvantages of winter travel in Kamchatka are that it is cold, there is no greenery and there are no bears, which some people come here especially to see.

The second myth I’d like to dispel is that travel around the peninsula requires hiring a helicopter. As mentioned above, in winter you can get almost anywhere by hitch hiking. I even hitched a lift with bear hunters on snowmobiles from their village to a reindeer herder encampment 100km away. In summer snowmobiles are replaced by horses, and transport is reduced from long distance ice-road journeys to irregular inter-settlement all-terrain vehicle trips. Hitch hiking is possible on these all-terrain vehicles though.

Throughout the year there are fairly expensive public helicopter flights to all settlements which are nevertheless much cheaper than hiring your own helicopter. There is also one permanent, year-round dirt road leading halfway up the peninsula. Some distance after the town of Milkovo, about 350km north of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky , it forks. The right fork leads to Klyuchi , site of Eurasia’s largest active volcano, and further to the port town of Ust-Kamchatsk. The left fork leads to the indigenous Even villages of Anavgay and Esso. Daily buses go from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to Klyuchi , Anavgay and Esso, costing about 1000 roubles each way. In winter a zimnik passable by lorries heads north from Anavgay 36 hours to the otherwise isolated town of Palana. From Palana more zimniki head further north to yet more isolated settlements. From the peninsula’s very northernmost settlements there are even EXTREMELY irregular snowmobile and all-terrain vehicle connections with Magadan Oblast and Chukotka. Another zimnik, only passable by all-terrain vehicle, heads from Anavgay to the village of Ust-Khayryuzovo on Kamchatka’s west coast.

Archstoyanie Festival (July 26-28)

One of the most remarkable festivals in Russia, Archstoyanie is a land art event which takes place in the Kaluga region, 200 km from Moscow at Nikola Lenivets , which is a beautiful architecture park in the middle of nature.

Archstyoanie spans across several villages, fields and forests of the Ugra national park. There’s a different theme each year, which participating artists and architects must reflect in their objects. They can only use natural materials which are available in that region. After presentation most of the objects become an interactive playground. This year the festival will unite 321 participants and one of the main act will be an installation of the monumental architectural piece “Ugruan” while new sounds of music are being born during the days of the event. Five new operas will be presented in different picturesque locations. Archstyoanie is a unique festival where you can reunite with nature deep in the forest and participate in art process at the same time.

There is also a kid’s version of the festival from June 28th to 30th where families can camp in the woods and fields with their kids while later take various exciting and handy workshops.

Another special feature of the festival is the accomodation: unique houses of abstract forms made out of wood with the glass walls, a fireplace, and sustainable design. One can choose different style of the housing depends on the budget. For low-cost travelers there is a camping site equipped with a field kitchen.

Most Beautiful Metro Stations in Moscow

Most Beautiful Metro Stations in Moscow

Visiting Moscow? Get yourself a metro card and explore Moscow’s beautiful metro stations. Moscow’s world-famous metro system is efficient and a great way to get from A to B. But there is more to it; Soviet mosaic decorations, exuberant halls with chandeliers, colourful paintings and immense statues. Moscow’s metro is an attraction itself, so take half a day and dive into Moscow’s underground!

The best thing to do is to get on the brown circle (number 5) line since the most beautiful metro stations are situated on this line. The only exception is the metro stop Mayakovskaya one the green line (number 2). My suggestion is to get a map, mark these metro stops on there and hop on the metro. It helps to get an English > Russian map to better understand the names of the stops. At some of the metro stops, the microphone voice speaks Russian and English so it’s not difficult at all.

Another thing we found out, is that it’s worth taking the escalator and explore the other corridors to discover how beautiful the full station is.

Quick hotel suggestion for Moscow is the amazing Brick Design Hotel .

These are my favourite metro stations in Moscow, in order of my personal preference:

1. Mayakovskaya Station

The metro station of Mayakovskaya looks like a ballroom! Wide arches, huge domes with lamps and mosaic works make your exit of the metro overwhelming. Look up and you will see the many colourful mosaics with typical Soviet pictures. Mayakovskaya is my personal favourite and is the only stop not on the brown line but on the green line.

2. Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya metro station is famous for its yellow ceiling. An average museum is nothing compared to this stop. Splendour all over the place, black and gold, mosaic – again – and enormous chandeliers that made my lamp at home look like a toy.

The pillars in the main hall of Novoslobodskaya metro station have the most colourful stained glass decorations. The golden arches and the golden mosaic with a naked lady holding a baby in front of the Soviet hammer and sickle, make the drama complete.

5. Belorusskaya Station

Prestigious arches, octagonal shapes of Socialistic Soviet Republic mosaics. The eyecatcher of Belorusskaya metro station, however, is the enormous statue of three men with long coats, holding guns and a flag.

6. Kiyevskaya Station

The metro station of Kiyevskaya is a bit more romantic than Belorusskaya and Prospect Mira. Beautiful paintings with classical decorations.

7. Taganskaya Station

At the main hall Taganskaya metro station you will find triangle light blue and white decorations that are an ode to various Russians that – I assume – are important for Russian history and victory. There is no need to explore others halls of Taganskaya, this is it.

8. Paveletskaya Station

Another and most definitely the less beautiful outrageous huge golden mosaic covers one of the walls of Paveletskaya. I would recommend taking the escalator to the exit upstairs to admire the turquoise dome and a painting of the St Basil’s Cathedral in a wooden frame.

It’s absolutely beautiful! Moscow is a great city trip destination and really surprised me in many ways.

My partner and I did a self guided Moscow Metro tour when we were there 2 years ago. So many breathtaking platforms…I highly recommend it! Most of my favorites were along the Brown 5 line, as well. I also loved Mayakovskaya, Arbatskaya, Aleksandrovski Sad and Ploshchad Revolyutsii. We’re heading back in a few weeks and plan to do Metro Tour-Part 2. We hope to see the #5 stations we missed before, as well as explore some of the Dark Blue #3 (Park Pobedy and Slavyansky Bul’var, for sure), Yellow #8 and Olive #10 platforms.

That’s exciting Julia! Curious to see your Metro Tour-Part 2 experience and the stations you discovered.
