We will be staying in Cascais for several days in late March and plan to drive to Sintra one of those days. We are an older couple so walking up a long hill is not really doable for us. Can we park at the train station and get either the 434 bus or a taxi? How close would the bus leave us to the Pena Palace? Would a taxi get us closer? Thank you.

We were just there today. The bus was right at the train station. It takes you to the base of the Pena Palace grounds. As we were running late we grabbed a cab which by the meter charged €10.05. It seemed like he was taking a circuitous route. The bus back cost two of us €8.20 and seemed faster and more direct. You can take a shuttle bus for €3 each way from the entrance up a very steep hill to the palace entrance. A special place worth the trip.
How long should we allow to get from the train station to where you go into the palace?

- Sintra: Overnight...
Sintra: Overnight stay, or day trip from Lisbon?
I'm hoping to get advice on whether we should cut a day from our Lisbon stay to overnight in Sintra. We're currently staying in Lisbon for 3 nights, and visiting Sintra as a day trip (via rental car). However, it sounds like there many worthwhile sights in/around Sintra (incl. nearby Estoril and Cascais), so we're now debating cutting Lisbon short by a night and staying at Tivoli Palacio de Seteais near Sintra town to visit more of the area. That said, we worry that we're selling short on Lisbon. We're not into museums and prefer to explore different neighborhoods, gardens, and generally being outside. Any advice you can share would be greatly appreciated!
Following to see the replies.
In my opinion, you need the time in Lisbon. So much to see and do there. If you really want to carve out time, just do Sintra as a day trip. And by the way, I wasn’t impressed with Cascais. Enjoy Portugal! One of our favorite trips!
Three nights in Lisbon equate to 2.5 days. If you take one day for Sintra you have only 1.5 days for Lisbon. In my opinion that's not enough time but it's your trip. Do some research and make a list of what you want to see and do in Lisbon. There are many worthwhile sights and neighborhoods. Organize your list and figure out how much time it will fill. Then you can decide how many nights to spend in Lisbon.
It's always a hard decision: how to spend limited time when there's so much to see and do. Good luck!
I absolutely love Sintra and have been there 3 times. But for the amount of days you have in Lisbon, I would do it as a day trip. There's not enough time to see Sintra and Cascais/Estoril in one day. There's not enough time in a day to see much of Sintra.
Regarding gardens, take a look at Monserrate, and Quinta da Regaleira is fun with their caves etc. Pena is the palace that a majority of individuals go to. It's interesting to look at from the outside, but I very much preferred the other two. I love the outdoors and gardens. https://www.parquesdesintra.pt/en/parks-monuments/park-and-palace-of-monserrate/history/
As a side note, a rental car can be a hassle when visiting Sintra as a day trip and best to take the train. If you do drive, leave early and park it in a lot outside of town.
And I suppose, you could decide to skip Lisbon and just stay in the Sintra-Cascais area. I understand there is some hiking in the area that a car would be helpful to get to. I've thought about spending some time in that area myself for a future trip, but then, I've also spent 7 days in Lisbon on my last trip.
Thank you so much for the insight! I'm quite torn at how to approach this, as I find myself attracted to what seems a more nature/outdoor focused experience in Sintra, but there's a long list of sights in Lisbon that we'd love to visit. Looking closer at our itinerary, would the following be too aggressive:
Day 1: Depart Porto (early morning) via rental car, with stops in Nazare (2 hours) and Obidos (2 hours). Arrive early evening in Sintra.
Day 2: Explore Sintra, specifically Pena Palace, Monserrate and Quinta da Regaleira. Stay in Sintra overnight.
Day 3: Depart Sintra (early morning) to Lisbon
Day 4: Lisbon; walking tour (any recommendations??)
Day 5: Lisbon; food tour (any recommendations??)
Day 6: Depart Lisbon (early morning) for Algarve
This plan would give us roughly 2.5 days in Lisbon.
I have always visited Sintra as a day trip. Earlier in the day is better. It is a unique and beautiful location. A different day trip from Lisbon is Evora ,about 1.5 hours by train and is well worth the trip. Évora, World Heritage Site | www.visitportugal.com
Since you're driving from Porto to Lisbon, take a look at some of the towns/beaches along the way (Silver Coast). Nazare gets a lot of tourists. And since you have a car, have you considered the monasteries, Batalha or Alcobaça? I liked Obidos, but liked the monasteries much more.
All 3 palaces in a day are doable, but can be exhausting. If it ends up being a long day, perhaps you can visit one of the palaces in the morning before leaving for Lisbon.
Edit to add: For Sintra, the only ticket that is timed is if you want to go inside Pena Palace. Otherwise Park of Pena (gardens, all of the outside including turrets) and the other tickets can be used within a year. This is to say, you have some flexibility and I would recommend enjoying yourself at each palace and don't feel the need to rush to the next one.

Sintra is a lovely place. It is easy to get to on a commuter train from Lisbon. If you are staying in Lisbon, I would do it as a day trip from there. One day should be enough. Even if you visit Sintra during low season, you will find it very touristy during the day. So, to feel the real charm of the place, I believe you should stay the night there.
12/24/22 08:38 AM. 5202 posts. My daughter and I went straight to Sintra on our day of arrival, took a nap at our hotel, then visited the Pena Palace in the afternoon without the crowds. You may consider spending your first night in Sintra, and that way you'll have some time the following day to visit more of the sites.
Sintra is a beautiful city, very romantic. Its palaces, castle and gardens make it unique. To visit Sintra and all its palaces you need at least 2 days, but you can have the feeling of the city with just 1 day trip. At night Sintra is asleep ;) Everything is closed after 7pm. You will be better off sleeping in Lisbon.

Posted by kathrynj. Cascais, Portugal. 12/28/23 06:33 AM. 1663 posts. Do a day tour to Sintra. It makes the logistics of getting from place to place so much easier. There are many companies offering tours. The reviews on trip advisor are pretty good IMO. Sintra and Lisbon will be crowded.
For centuries, Portugal's aristocracy considered Sintra — just 15 miles northwest of Lisbon — the perfect place to escape from city life. Now tourists do, too. Sintra is a mix of natural and man-made beauty: fantasy castles set amid exotic tropical plants, lush green valleys, and craggy hilltops with hazy views of the Atlantic and Lisbon. It was the summer escape of Portugal's kings, and ...
Apr 30, 2023, 11:23 PM. Hello everyone…I just wanted to share my observations from my day trip to Sintra from Lisbon. For reference, we are a well traveled couple in our 30s and traveled to Sintra on a Sunday in March. I had been checking the website for Peña Palace tickets almost daily (for five months) leading up to our visit as I was not ...

Touring Sintra. Hello, we are using a travel planner who is recommending a full day side trip to Sintra, from Lisbon,, which include going to Cascais and Estoril. A very reputable tour company I was in touch with felt strongly that it was wrong to include these three stops in one day and to spend the entire day just on Sintra, or do just a half ...
Dallas, Texas. Level Contributor. 19 posts. 1 review. Sintra Tours vs. doing it on your own? HELP! 4 years ago. Hi friends, we will be going to Sintra via Lisbon on Thursday 9/12 or Friday 9/13. Individual tickets are from €3.90 for a single trip on the 434 bus, while a 24-hour ticket costs €15.10. 3. By Car. Finally, if you're already driving over to Sintra, it makes sense that you use your car to get from one attraction to the next. It will certainly help with outlying ones like the Convent of the Capuchos.
Midwest. 04/29/22 03:47 PM. 2768 posts. Definitely buy the Pena Palace tickets ahead of time. Note that you can choose to buy entry into the palace or just the park. The park includes most of the famous colorful terraces of the palace, just not the interior. Lines are long to enter the interior - not the ticket line (though that is long if you ...
