How to plan an awesome Aussie ski trip from Sydney

' src=

Some of you might be surprised to discover that there is actually snow in Australia.

With an international reputation as a hot country filled with desert and lined with beaches, it can be a pleasant shock to learn that Australia has an impressive set of snow-covered mountains, too.

There are a handful of places to go skiing in Australia, mostly located in the southeast corner of the country where the Great Dividing Range cuts through the states of Victoria and New South Wales. When Australians decide to take a trip to these parts, we affectionately refer to it as “going to the snow” as this really is the only destination to see white-capped mountains on the Australian mainland.

I’ve now visited two of Australia’s ski resorts: Mt Buller, where I learned to ski with my family at the age of 13, and Perisher, where I recently had a much more adult version of a weekend on the slopes (which included numerous espresso martinis) with Rob and two of our friends.

Perisher, which is located in the NSW Snowy Mountains, is the largest ski field in the Southern Hemisphere and is a popular destination for both locals and international visitors. This post is going to focus on planning a ski trip to Perisher, though most of this information will also be relevant for the neighbouring Thredbo ski field which is only 15-minutes further along Alpine Way.

Sydney to Perisher ski trip map

Perisher Valley, NSW, Australia

When to go skiing in Australia:

Australian winter is from June to August. Ski season at the Snowy Mountains is generally between two New South Wales public holidays – starting on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend (mid-June), and ending on the Labour Day long weekend (early October).

Altitudes at Perisher range from 1640 metres to 2054 metres. The resort has 12.45 sq kms (1245 ha) of skiable area, 47 lifts from rope tows to high-speed chairlifts, and 240 snow guns that build on the natural snow cover overnight.

Perisher Snow Resort, NSW, Australia

Where to stay in the Snowy Mountains:

It takes around 5-hours to drive to the Snowy Mountains from Sydney, so while it is possible to do it in a day trip , most travellers will choose to make a weekend of it. It’s best to travel down in the afternoon or evening, then stay overnight and hit the slopes the next morning. We stayed three nights and got a 3-day lift pass to maximise our ski time.

Perisher Valley accommodation:

Perisher Valley has a handful of hotels that are located on the snow such as the Marritz Hotel or the Man From Snowy River Hotel . Of course these ski village hotels are generally pretty pricey at around $400-$1000 per night, but they are also super convenient if you don’t want to be commuting between the nearby towns and the ski fields every day.

Jindabyne accommodation:

Most people who are heading to the snow choose to stay in the town of Jindabyne. This is the closest major town to the ski fields (a 20-minute drive) and is a popular spot for the thousands of skiers and snowboarders that come through each winter. The town has loads of accommodation options, and while it’s cheaper to stay here than on the slopes at Perisher Valley, it’s still not entirely budget-friendly.

A discount option would be the Discovery Parks caravan park on the foreshore, which has a range of basic cabins available. For something a little nicer, go for the Jindy Inn or Panorama Jindabyne which have simple hotel-style rooms.

Berridale accommodation:

Seeing as Rob and I had a rental car, we decided to stay a little further out in the town of Berridale. It did take some extra effort to drive to the ski fields each day (a 40-minute drive each way) but we did save loads on the accommodation costs for our three night stay. We chose to stay at Cottonwood Lodge , which was a simple but nice motel filled almost entirely with fellow skiiers!

Hume Highway to Canberra

How to get to the Snowy Mountains:

The options for getting to the Snowy Mountains from Sydney include driving, hopping on a group tour, getting a bus transfer, or a regional flight. We chose to drive as this option offered us the most flexibility, but I’ll give you an overview of all four options.

Driving to the Snowy Mountains:

If you’re comfortable with driving in Australia, this option is a great way to get to the Snowy Mountains. Rob and I rented a car in Sydney in the late afternoon (making sure it had folding back seats to fit our ski gear) then began the 4.5-hour drive to our accommodation in Berridale, stopping in at Canberra for dinner along the way.

Group tours to the Snowy Mountains:

Group tours are a good option for backpackers or solo travellers. Our two friends chose to join a weekend snow trip as they were on a budget and liked the idea of having someone else organise the entire itinerary. The group tours depart from Sydney or Canberra and usually include bus transfers, dorm room accommodation, and some meals. The tour company may also organise lift passes and ski hire for an extra fee.

Bus transfers to the Snowy Mountains:

If you want to travel independently, you can book a bus transfer and organise your own accommodation. Greyhound Australia has a Snow Express bus service that departs from Sydney Central Station to the Snowy Mountains (via Canberra). This leaves daily at 7AM and takes 6 hours and 45 minutes to get to Jindabyne, or you can take the bus straight to the ski fields. Murrays also offer a similar bus service that will take you from Sydney to the Snowy Mountains.

Flying to the Snowy Mountains:

Regional Express Airlines offers flights to Snowy Mountains (Cooma) airport, which is a 50-minute drive from the ski fields. The flight takes 1-hour and costs anywhere between $150-$350 each way. On arrival there are a handful of transport options for onwards travel, including car rental or private bus transfers. This is definitely the most expensive way to get to the Snowy Mountains, so not many people will choose to fly.

Perisher Skitube alpine railway, NSW, Australia

Getting to Perisher ski field:

Getting to the ski field at Perisher might be somewhat confusing for those who haven’t done it before. Here are the drive and bus options:

Drive to Perisher Valley:

Perisher Valley has an access road but it requires snow chains for cars, and the resort has limited parking. As the ski field is within Kosciuszko National Park, this option also means that you must pay the daily $25 per vehicle fee for entering the national park.

Drive to Bullocks Flat for the Skitube:

The alternative way to access the ski field (and this is by far the most popular option) is taking the Skitube alpine railway from Bullocks Flat. There is loads of free parking here where you can leave your car for the day. Once you find a spot, you’ll just need to carry your ski gear to the terminal then catch the train directly to the ski resort.

The Skitube is quite an adventure in itself – the train is a rack-railway that takes you through a long tunnel under the mountain and drops you off at the base of the ski field. When you get off at Perisher Valley terminal, it’s only a short walk to the chairlifts where you can hop on to your skis and hit the slopes.

Tickets for the Skitube can be purchased with Perisher lift passes. It’s not particularly cheap, but it’s definitely convenient. We ended up paying $90 each for the Skitube tickets along with our 3-day lift passes, so the price was $30 per day for the return trip up and back down the mountain. This price also included the national park fee.

Get a bus transfer from Jindabyne:

There are also daily bus transfers from accommodation in Jindabyne to the ski fields. Snowy Mountains Shuttles and Alpine Charters both offer daily shuttle services.

Perisher ski lift, NSW, Australia

Where to hire ski gear:

We chose to go with Jindy Snow in East Jindabyne to rent our skis, boots, and poles. The store was easy to access on our way to the slopes, their service was great, and there was a nice cafe next door where we could grab our essential morning coffees. We paid $64 each for our 3-day hire – make sure you book online as you’ll get a 20% discount on your rates!

If you’d prefer to collect ski gear from Jindabyne, there are loads of options – just do a Google Maps search for ski hire in Jindabyne and you can compare a range of outlets.

There is also the option of hiring your gear from Bullocks Flat or Perisher Valley , which can be added on to your lift pass purchase. These options are obviously more expensive at around twice the price of the Jindabyne outlets, but the location is convenient and you might also be able to avoid lugging your ski gear to and from the slopes each day.

Perisher ski lift, NSW, Australia

How to buy Perisher lift passes:

You can buy lift passes for Perisher online . If you purchase them in advance, the tickets are discounted. We ended up buying our 3-day lift passes a few weeks ahead and paid $348 each ($116 per day). If you buy the lift passes on-site, expect to pay up to $146 per day. The passes can be collected from a counter at Bullocks Flat terminal or at Perisher Valley.

It’s important to consider whether you will be using the Skitube when booking your lift passes. The tickets are added on as an extra when you proceed through the checkout, and if purchased separately they cost an insane $85 per day!

You will also be prompted to add on a Perisher Card through the checkout process. This card is for first timers to Perisher who have not purchased a lift pass previously. If this is you, then you will have to pay the $5 for a Perisher Card.

Planning your trip to the snow

A trip to the Snowy Mountains in winter is an unforgettable experience, from the spectacular snow swept vistas to the skiing, snowboarding and après ski entertainment.

Which resort is right for you?

There are four ski resorts in Kosciuszko National Park: Thredbo , Perisher , Charlotte Pass and Selwyn Snow Resort . Thredbo and Perisher are the largest, with plenty of on-snow accommodation, thriving après ski options, as well as wide terrain parks and ski schools.

  • Perisher contains four linked resorts, including Perisher Valley , Smiggin Holes , Guthega and Blue Cow , offering plenty of runs accessed by 47 lifts.  Perisher has hotels and a range of lodges dotted around Perisher and Smiggin Holes.
  • Thredbo is a vibrant alpine gem featuring Australia’s longest runs and highest lifted point, an alpine gondola and the Thredbo Leisure Centre for fun off the slopes.
  • Charlotte Pass is Australia’s oldest ski resort, with a charming, intimate feel, making it a great choice for families starting out. It’s also the highest resort in the mountains and is completely snowed in during the season.
  • Selwyn Snow Resort is set for a grand reopening for the 2023 snow season after closing in 2020 due to severe bushfire damage. The reopening includes the new Selwyn Centre and a relocated and expanded Toboggan Park.

Snowy Mountains town options

The nearby Snowy Mountains towns of Jindabyne or Berridale also offer a wide choice of accommodation, from lodges to inns, homes to holiday parks, as well as plenty of dining options. You also get to enjoy the beautiful view of Lake Jindabyne. If you choose to stay in one of these picturesque villages, you can access the resorts by driving to the Skitube .

Getting there

There are a number of ways to get to the Snowy Mountains . You can fly into the Snowy Mountains Airport   near Cooma or choose to fly into Canberra , around 2 hours 30 mins away. You can hire a car or arrange transfers from both these airports. There are also frequent bus services to the region.

If you are going to drive, all 2WD vehicles in Kosciuszko National Park must carry snow chains between the months of June and October. All vehicles must pay to enter the park. It is a good idea to purchase a digital annual pass, which allows entry to all the national parks in NSW, from the NPWS website before you arrive. Annual passes are not available for purchase at the park entry gates.

You can drive right into the centre of Thredbo and Perisher, though parking at Perisher is limited. If you’re staying at Perisher or Charlotte Pass, you can also park your car at Bullocks Flat outside Jindabyne and catch the Skitube , which runs through Perisher Valley and Blue Cow. For Charlotte Pass, take the snowcat from the Skitube terminal at Perisher Valley.

Prepare for the slopes

It’s important you’re wearing the right gear for the snow, so make a checklist before you leave. For beginners, the best option is to hire your skis, boots, snowboards, and outer clothing. You can do this in Cooma or Jindabyne , or at the resort. You don’t need to commit to buying expensive gear and it’s easy to change or adjust things if they’re not right.

If you have your own skis or snowboard, have them waxed and double check your gear in advance. You’ll need to buy your own goggles, socks, and gloves, and don’t forget a helmet – it’s compulsory for kids and recommended for all. Don’t forget to pack sunglasses, sunscreen, snow boots for walking around off the slopes, a beanie or hat, and plenty of layers.

Other top tips:

  • Take snacks to stick in your ski jacket.
  • Remember to drink plenty of water.
  • See if you can store skis/boards in a locker rather than your room.

Children skiing, Perisher

Take a lesson

Having a lesson is highly recommended for all levels, especially for absolute beginners and children. It is also beneficial to have a lesson if you haven’t been on the slopes for a while.

Resorts offer group or private lessons, which should be booked in advance, and check to see they offer childcare should you need it. It’s also wise to book other activities before you go, such as snowshoe tours, cross country lessons, backcountry lessons and so on.

The best ski resorts in Australia

Australian snowfields offer a unique experience for skiers and boarders looking for fresh snow with a beautiful bushland backdrop.

By Rachael Oakes-Ash and Carly Spek

Fireworks, Thredbo, NSW © Thredbo

Whether you're zipping down Australasia’s longest ski run, cruising intermediate slopes or finding your feet in the beginner's area, Thredbo has it all. You can choose to indulge in exclusive experiences like their Sunrise Session to snag the first run of the day. Après the nights away at Alpine Bar , then rejuvenate with a night in at cosy accommodation options like The Eastern or The Denman . Those with access needs can also check out Thredbo’s Adaptive Snowsports Guide to prepare for epic adventures on the slopes.

Blue Cow, Perisher, NSW © Perisher

If you like your ski resorts big, then Perisher is for you. The resort boasts the largest terrain in Australasia and some of the best terrain parks in the country. You can stay on-mountain at Perisher without the crowds of a ski village with options like the Marritz Hotel and The Man From Snowy River Hotel . Many skiers opt to stay in the nearby town of Jindabyne, where you'll find classic country pubs, a range of restaurants and a welcoming, laid-back vibe.

Falls Creek, Alpine National Park, VIC © Chris Hocking

Falls Creek is a pedestrian-only ski village, where all the accommodation, dining and snow activities are ski-in/ski-out – so bring your après boots! The largest ski resort in Victoria , it's also great for families, with a thriving ski school and child-dedicated runs. If you fancy adventuring beyond the park, take a Hakuba Backcountry Tour with Australian Olympian Steve Lee to find fresh powder snow. Visit Elk or Astra Lodge for quality food by the slopes.

Hotham Alpine Resort, Mt Hotham, VIC © Hotham Alpine Resort

The ski village at Mount Hotham is perched on top of the mountain, meaning your first ski of the day is down to the chairlift. This is a mountain for those who like their runs steeper and deeper, with an impressive mix of intermediate, advanced and expert terrain as well as a separate beginners' area. For something truly unique, take a husky sled dog tour of the backcountry trails before bar-hopping in nearby Dinner Plain .

Skiing, Mount Buller, VIC © Mt Buller/Peter Dunphy

Melburnians love Mount Buller , with 80km (49mi) of beginner to advanced trails and the largest lift network in Victoria –  enough to keep your thighs burning all day! Many of Australia’s winter Olympians ski here and you can sometimes see them in action at the resort's competitive events. When it's time for a break, take your pick of restaurants and après bars.

As the temperatures rise in the Northern Hemisphere, Australia gears up for winter. Hit the slopes as skiing and snowboarding season kicks in in Victoria and New South Wales, usually in mid June until late September. The Australian ski industry has taken pains to ensure a top-notch skiing experience, having spent a pretty penny on world-class snow machines to ensure that every day on the slopes is an exceptional one. Ski shuttles to most ski fields are available throughout the day and ski lifts usually operate from 8.30am to 4pm.

Ferry crew have been praised online after they were filmed rescuing a struggling kayaker who capsized in Sydney Harbour.

Staff rushed to help a man who appeared distressed in the water while they travelled from Manly to Circular Quay on the 7.10am service on Saturday.

General Purpose Hand Colin Gawthorne said the ferry was halfway across the heads when he noticed a bright orange and red coloured surf ski kayak manoeuvring in the rough waters.

“I said to the captain, Carlos, ‘there’s something strange about that surf ski kayak over there’. So he had a look and said ‘we might go check it out’,” Mr Gawthorne told 2GB radio.

The crew ran downstairs to retrieve a long pole and hook to fetch the kayak and bring it aboard, unable to see its owner anywhere.

“Then when I had another look, probably another 100m to port, I noticed another little bright orange (life) jacket and it was a bloke going up and down in the swell,” he added.

The ferry quickly headed towards the man as the crew got their rescue ladder ready.

Video footage, shared by the Manly Observer, shows two crew members leaning over the vessel to hand the kayaker a rope in the water.

Moments later, the kayaker, dressed in a brightly coloured hat and life jacket, looked relieved as he was seen climbing up the ladder onto the ferry with the rope hooked around his arm.

Mr Gawthorne said the kayaker, who had separated from his group, was “pretty puffed and shaken” when he was taken aboard.

“He was very grateful. It turns out he was definitely worth saving because he was one of our regular passengers,” he joked.

Mr Gawthorne said the crew are “forever” pulling out empty kayaks and other objects from the harbour but were “not expecting to be picking up a human”.

“Anything can happen in the water, anything, and the wind picked up so quickly that it became pretty hazardous.”

After making it aboard, the kayaker was checked over by the crew before he was ushered upstairs and offered a hot coffee.

The kayaker, Michael Finn, later revealed on social media he was surf skiing when he experienced an issue with his leg leash.

“Lesson for all surf ski-ers – make sure your leg leash is not ageing,” he commented on the video on Facebook.

Mr Finn praised the praised the crew’s “professionalism and care”, sharing “Carlos hosted me on the bridge and Col made me a cracking coffee!”

Others online also commend the “sensational” work of the quick-thinking captain and crew.

“Great work by all involved especially the expert work of the captain,” passenger Steve Roulston told the Manly Observer.

“Great skills by the captain. Not (an) easy task,” another person commented online.

“The crew on these ferries are always so awesome, so helpful. Well done to everyone involved,” another wrote.
