Flying high: how we’ll be travelling in 2024

It’s time to start plotting when, where and how you’ll be holidaying next year

There’s nothing like a good holiday. It’s not just the actual trip that brings us joy, but the time we spend planning it: the fun of picking out the perfect hotel, the lunch breaks looking up amazing restaurants to visit, and the soul-soothing feeling that comes from knowing you’ve got a vacay on the horizon.

So exactly what is going to be big in travel next year? Thanks to the annual Skyscanner Travel Trends report , which polls travellers on their holiday plans, we can already see where Aussies are headed next. And it looks like we’ll be doing things a little differently.

Japan is back, baby

No, you’re not imagining it. Everyone on your Instagram feed really is in Japan at the moment.

Osaka is the number one buzzing destination for Australian travellers right now, having experienced a 455% year-on-year increase in searches on Skyscanner . Sapporo (the gateway to Japan’s ski resorts) and the inimitable capital city of Tokyo are also among the top five buzziest spots.

There are good reasons for this. The Land of the Rising Sun only reopened its borders to travellers last year, so many of us are catching up on Covid-delayed plans, or just keen to get back to one of the most rewarding destinations on Earth. And it just might be the best foodie destination there is. There are a whopping 92 Michelin-starred restaurants in Osaka alone, including 80 one-star establishments, many of which make fine dining genuinely affordable. Arrive hungry.

We’re staying (kind of) close to home

Japan isn’t the only Asian destination popular with Australian travellers. Many of us are seeking the big city atmospheres of Chinese destinations such as Chengdu and Beijing, which round out the top five destinations that have had the biggest year-on-year increase in searches.

With the cost of living spurring many of us to try to holiday for less [link to article 1] , the entire top 10 is made up of destinations in Asia and the Pacific. The beautiful beaches of Krabi in Thailand and Cebu in the Philippines are soaring in popularity, while the French island of New Caledonia – about a three-hour flight from Sydney, or just two hours from Brisbane – is also on the rise. Many of us are also choosing to jet to the affordable (and unforgettable) shores of Vietnam.

Bougie on a budget is in

While the cost of living may be inspiring us to seek better deals and destinations closer to home, we’re not scrimping on every portion of the trip.

More of us are seeking luxe for less by making small shifts such as upgrading a flight to business with a savvy use of points, or treating ourselves to airport lounge access; 29% of us even said we’d pay more for better quality food on flights. It’s the little things, right?

We’ll be travelling with mates

Bust out the shared Google spreadsheet – many of us are keen to jet off on a group trip in 2024.

Skyscanner found that 46% of Australian travellers have taken a group trip to celebrate a birthday or anniversary, with a further 28% saying it’s something they’d love to do. It’s all about marking milestones surrounded by the people you love.

Those of us who are gathering the troops for an overseas trip next year are most likely to head to New Zealand, Indonesia and Japan.

We’ll be vibe hunting

Skyscanner found the real trend of 2024 is going to be cultural exploration.

Many of us will jet abroad seeking incredible food: 56% of Aussies say eating the local cuisine and trying authentic food is their favourite activity when travelling, and 39% say they want to book a destination purely based on a specific restaurant they want to visit. Others will travel in search of a big gig, with 32% of Australian travellers willing to hop on a short haul flight to see their favourite artist live.

And many of us want to follow in the footsteps of characters from TV shows, with Emily in Paris top of the list. Almost 50% of travellers say they’d like to experience Paris like Emily, the survey found, and one week after the season three premiere in December 2022, Skyscanner saw a 65% increase in searches from Australia to the City of Love.

Then there’s that less tangible but oh-so-important “vibe” of a destination – something 29% of us rate as important when choosing where to travel. We want to get out there, soak it up and see what the world has to offer.

Skyscanner releases 2023 travel trends report

Skyscanner releases 2023 travel trends report

Posted by Claudia De Brito on 2 December 2022

The report shows that UAE travellers are seeking experiences grounded in nature and wellbeing

Travel marketplace Skyscanner has published a new report exploring the latest trends in global travel.

Titled  Skyscanner Horizons: Outlook in 202 3 as travellers redefine value, the report explores a combination of consumer survey and proprietary search and booking data to provide a view of how travellers are thinking about their plans for the next 12 months.

A survey of 11,000 travellers from 10 countries also reveals insights about key indicators such as travel propensity, spend, trip type and social media preferences.

The research found that UAE holidaymakers are expecting another strong year of travel despite economic uncertainty, but price-led decision making will drive change in 2023. Although 88% of UAE travellers are planning to spend the same if not more on travel abroad next year, how they are going to spend is projected to differ.

RELATED: Skyscanner reveals winter travel trends for UAE and Saudi Travellers Skyscanner shares travel insights ahead of FIFA World Cup Qatar Booking.com's travel predictions for 2023

Key trends include a desire to extend holidays by combining leisure and work, a desire to seek grounded in nature and wellbeing and growing demand for solo adventures.

Skyscanner VP of strategy Naomi Hahn said: “It is clear that we’re hungrier than ever to discover something new – even though we might have less in our pockets next year. The aftermath of a pandemic has made travellers look for ways to make up for lost time and create new experiences and memories.

“Consumers have become savvier to value post pandemic – the squeeze on personal spending has shown that consumers will still prioritise getting away but are increasingly shopping around on metasearch platforms like Skyscanner and employing simple travel hacks to ensure they get the most for their money, like being flexible in terms of dates and destination.

“The year looks set to be a year of new discoveries as emerging, pocket friendly destinations come to the fore.”

Vice-president of Flights Hugh Aitken added: “2022 has not only marked a return to 2019 levels of travel demand in many parts of the world, but also demonstrated the resilience of the sector.

“Travellers have shown a sustained desire to travel as networks are restored, as well as a willingness to upgrade their airfares. Despite current global economic pressures, there is reason for cautious optimism in 2023 as international travel continues its resurgence and travellers indicate their appetite to put their discretionary spend towards it.

“However, travel patterns will continue to vary as travellers increasingly look for value – and a mobile-first experience – to build itineraries and choose destinations that best suit their individual needs.”

  • Solo travelling is no longer a niche: 69% of travellers from the UAE are considering going on holiday on their own in 2023
  • Mobile's resurgence for trip planning and booking: 50% growth in travellers accessing Skyscanner via mobile devices since the start of the year
  • Instagram is the most influential social media platform for inspiration: TikTok not far behind

Arabian Travel Market 2024 welcomes 41,000 attendees

Travel Experiences in Demand: Survey of 18,000 Travelers Reveals Preferences

Selene Brophy , Skift

October 31st, 2023 at 12:33 PM EDT

A massive survey of 18,000 travelers worldwide suggests that 2024 is shaping up to be a year when tours, activities, and experiences are decisive. Now if only marketers will catch up to reality.

Selene Brophy

So much of travel marketing focuses on the transactional, with tons of airtime and budget given to selling hotels and other classic travel products. Yet a mammoth survey of 18,000 travelers underscores how experiences are rising in importance.

Experiences, such as food, concerts, art, and hiking, increasingly help drive trip-planning decisions — though in different ways for different nationalities. Clues to the importance of the experiential in travel appeared in a striking chart released on Tuesday.

The data came from surveys in 15 markets by Skyscanner , a price-comparison service run by the Trip.com Group .

Experiences to Drive Travel Choices

This chart lists countries where Skyscanner surveyed travelers, followed by each nationality’s average interest in different experiences.

Take UAE residents: When going abroad, only about 26% of Emirati travelers are interested in sampling local food. In contrast, 57% of Spanish and French travelers say culinary exploration is an important consideration in their trip planning.

Rising Destinations

Destinations that successfully market themselves as offering unique experiences may punch above their weight in the travel recovery.

To get a sense of which destinations are on the rise, Skyscanner’s latest travel report combined survey data with its search and booking data over the next year.

Many American travelers are looking for the experience of either a tropical island or an urban escape in a culture they lack familiarity with. Search queries and bookings for 2024 are disproportionately up for the Cayman Islands and French Polynesia, as well as Japanese cities such as Osaka and Tokyo.

In Europe, some travelers are opting for both lesser-known and popular tourist areas. The top five destinations for travelers from this region ranged from Rayong’s beach retreats in Thailand to the shores of Klagenfurt set along   Austria’s Lake Wörthersee and small towns like Castletown in the Isle of Man.

Morocco is the leading destination for travel to Africa. Low-cost airlines adding new routes from Europe, are driving demand with better affordability, Skyscanner said. It highlighted Ouarzazate in Morocco as receiving notable interest.

Perhaps the ultimate overall takeaway is that, in 2024, experiences will drive travel decisions differently, as the euphoria of “revenge travel” will give way to more intentional journeys.

That could include “gig trippers” traveling to see their favorite musicians perform, foodies looking to discover parts of culture through local cuisine, or art aficionados visiting museums and landmarks.

These Are The 6 Most Popular Destinations For Americans This Summer According To Skyscanner

Spring has sprung, which means many travelers are off to the beach for a fun Spring Break getaway. But not all travelers are focused on the ‘here” and ‘now'.

According to Skyscanner's new Horizons Regional Travel Outlook 2024 Report, many U.S. travelers already have their set their sights on some awesome summer trips across the globe, ranging from lesser-known to iconic to historic.

Most travelers seem destined to put their passports to use , while one mega-popular U.S. city is just too good to pass up.

These are the 6 most popular destinations for Americans this summer according to Skyscanner.

The concrete jungle of the Philippines is well worth a trip on its own or as a gateway to island-hopping.

One of the most affordable cities in Asia, Manila has become quite popular for digital nomads.

Despite the drawbacks of high humidity, any type of traveler is well-suited to this city as it's cheap, cultural, and offers many attractions.

Perusing the streets immediately transports you into a completely different culture where you'll find bustling street markets, beautiful historic architecture, and remnants of its Spanish colonial past like the Intramuros district.

Perhaps Spain's artsiest city, Americans are craving culture through Spain's phenomenal food, world-class museums, and mesmerizing architecture.

As one of the most popular countries in Europe, it seems travelers are skipping out on Barcelona as their gateway and using Spain's capital instead.

A recent report by Design Rush named Madrid as the top city in the world for digital nomads, with some of the highlights being a reliable metro, reasonable pricing, lovely climate, and endless attractions.

No matter if you're here for a quick trip or long-term, Madrid is never a bad decision.

Florida, in general, is having a moment this spring with incredible beach getaways, cultural cities , and of course, all that Orlando has to offer.

Backed by multiple reports, Orlando keeps making its name as one of the best travel destinations.

Orlando is one of few places in Florida not to be considered a beach city per se, but beaches are always within reach no matter where you are in the state.

The major draw to Orlando is, no surprise, the number one amusement park in the world-the magic of Disney World. But that's not all.

This pretty city is full of surprises as a very affordable sunny getaway safe for all ages where the whole fam can have fun during the day and the grown-ups can go out for an underrated nightlife scene.

3) San Carlos de Bariloche

Undoubtedly the biggest surprise on Skyscanner's list is that more Americans are seeking an off-path adventure.

San Carlos de Bariloche, in the Patagonia region of Argentina, is a real beaut. It's also more commonly known as simply ‘Bariloche', but adding the extras sure makes it sound nice!

This area is super popular for hiking and taking in some of the world's most stunning natural sites, and the town itself is quite delightful as it surrounds a gorgeous glacial lake.

But, surely the main reason to visit Bariloche in our summer is to ski in their winter as it is one of the top ski destinations this side of the world.

Rome is one of the oldest continuously occupied cities in Europe, and it shows in the best of ways as its preservation is remarkable.

Teeming with rich history, gorgeous architecture, and ancient ruins such as the Colosseum and Palatine Hill, Rome is one of the most accessible true bucket-list destinations.

And no matter where you're from, the food is to die for. This iconic global city is astounding at every turn, and it's no surprise that more Americans are already making summer plans to visit.

Japan's most renowned city is a perpetual playground where it seems like you could stay for years and never find yourself bored.

Luckily for U.S. travelers, there are ample flights to reach this Asian powerhouse, including Japan's budget airline ZIPAIR.

Although Japan is asking tourists to explore the country's lesser known gems, it's hard to pass up Tokyo.

A new world awaits you in this city, but Japan is definitely worth exploring outside Tokyo's city limits like other popular cities such as Kyoto, Osaka, or perhaps take a chance on the new bullet train route to relatively unknown side of Japan – Fukui.

Sam, our Lead Writer & Journalist based in San Diego has visited 30 countries and written over 400 articles with a focus on sharing his own travel experiences and shining a light on lesser-known gems.

The Digital Travellers

India’s leading b2b travel trade digital media, skyscanner travel report: data reveals what made indian travellers tick in 2023.

Skyscanner unveils the most budget-friendly flight, hotel stay, and car rental destinations from India for 2023.

  • The top holiday destinations for Indian travelers include New Delhi, Dubai, and Bangkok.
  • March emerges as the most favored month for travel among Indian travellers in 2023.
  • Skyscanner has introduced several enhancements in 2023, including an AI-inspired tool, new languages, and accessibility improvements.
  • The much-loved ‘Cheapest Month’ feature makes a return with new functionalities.
  • Skyscanner introduces a true total cost display to assist global travellers in finding their ideal flight, hotel, and car rental options.

Top spots for Indian travellers in 2023

Skyscanner, the global travel marketplace, looks back on a year of assisting a record number of travelers in exploring the world and provides a summary of India’s travel trends in 2023. Here are the top destinations for Indian travelers in 2023.

In 2023, Dubai secures its position as the most sought-after international destination. Renowned for its contemporary opulence and top-tier attractions, including artificial islands, mega malls, and towering skyscrapers, Indian travellers were drawn to the gleaming city throughout the year.

Following closely, Bangkok emerges as the second most popular international destination for Indian travellers. From relishing street food delights in lively markets to exploring intricate temples like Wat Pho and immersing themselves in the vibrant nightlife along Khao San Road, the city’s dynamic energy and cultural richness captured the hearts of Indian travellers in 2023.

Cheapest flights, hotels & car hire of 2023 revealed

In 2023, a growing number of Indian travellers are choosing alternative and budget-friendly cities within India that offer rich cultural experiences and diverse cuisine. Skyscanner data highlights Jagdalpur in India as the most economical flight destination, with an average return flight cost of just ₹3,035.

Skyscanner’s infographic also reveals the most cost-effective destination to book each month for Indian travellers throughout 2023. Additionally, the data identifies the cheapest three-star hotel stay and the most budget-friendly city for car rentals in 2023:

  • Cheapest Three-Star Hotel Stay: After analyzing prices across numerous global destinations, Nha Trang in Vietnam emerges as the most economical city for a three-star hotel stay for Indian travelers. Known for its picturesque coastal beauty and cultural richness, Nha Trang offers affordability combined with a delightful stay enriched by Vietnam’s diverse experiences.
  • Cheapest Car Hire Destination: Doha in Qatar claims the top spot as the city offering the most affordable car hire, with Indian travelers paying only ₹2,198 per day on average. Doha serves as an excellent starting point for a road trip adventure, allowing travelers to explore the city’s modern marvels, visit iconic cultural sites, and venture into the scenic desert landscapes.

Insights from Skyscanner’s Travel Trends and Destination Expert:

Reflecting on the year of travel, Skyscanner’s Travel Trends and Destination Expert, Mohit Joshi, notes how Indians have enthusiastically embraced global exploration despite tightened budgets. This traveler behaviour aligns with emerging trends revealed in the recent Travel Trends 2024 report. The report emphasises that the value of experiences and cultural exploration will become key considerations, with price no longer being the sole factor influencing decision-making for Indian travellers.

Joshi anticipates this momentum to continue growing in the coming year. The 2024 report indicates that 86% of Indian travellers plan to take the same number, if not more, trips abroad in 2024 compared to 2023. Additionally, Nice in France is predicted to be a great-value destination for Indian travellers in 2024, with airfares having dropped by over a third in the past 12 months.

In 2024, Skyscanner foresees Indian travellers heading abroad to attend live performances of their favourite artists. A third of fans express their willingness to travel to short-haul destinations for live performances, while 20% are open to flying long-haul for the same purpose.

Skyscanner’s Role in Supporting Global Travel in 2023:

Skyscanner has played a pivotal role in assisting over 100 million users every month from around the world in finding their perfect flights, hotel stays, and car rentals in 2023. • Experimenting with alternative options on the results page for flexible travellers, showing if a direct flight is available on an alternative day.
  • Enhanced traveler ratings and reviews, incorporating Expedia and TripAdvisor reviews in hotel results and simplifying airline and online travel agent ratings with emojis on the mobile site.

Ensuring the Best Price for Travellers:

3 expert tips on what to do in Edinburgh, Scotland

To take in the destination's historic charm, visit Edinburgh Castle during your trip to the city.

"As interest in travel amongst Canadians increasingly grows, a majority of destinations are chosen based on a variety of characteristics, with attractions accounting for 61 per cent," Lindsay stated.

"One of the oldest fortified places in Europe, Edinburgh Castle has a long rich history as a royal residence, military garrison, prison and fortress."

With the Scotland capital being among Europe's most walkable cities, that includes some unique city parks, like Holyrood Park.

"Atop Holyrood Park as the park's highest point, Arthur's Seat is an ancient volcano, and sits 251 metres above sea level giving excellent view of the city; it is also the site of a large and well preserved fort, one of four hill forts dating from around 2,000 years ago," Lindsay advised.

If you really want to immerse yourself in Scottish culture, don't miss out on trying local cuisine, including haggis.

"The national dish of Scotland, haggis is a type of pudding composed of the majority of sheep or calf offal and has been recognized as a Scottish delicacy since the mid-18th century," Lindsay highlighted. "Fit right in with the Scots and enjoy haggis with turnips (called 'swedes' or 'neeps') and mashed potatoes ('tatties'), as well as Scotch whisky."

Where to stay in Edinburgh, Scotland

The Balmoral is a five-star landmark, identifiable by its clock tower, in a prime Princes Street location. The hotel also feature The Balmoral Spa with an indoor pool and multiple dining options.

Market Street Hotel brings contemporary design to your stay in Edinburgh. It also has a rooftop champagne lounge with views across the city.

Tips for finding the cheapest flights

If flight costs are getting you down, there are a few things Canadian travellers can do to ensure they're getting the best deal possible for their next vacation, both on the Skyscanner platform specifically and when looking for flights more generally.

Beat the crowds: For flights that are filling up fast, you'll want to make sure you're looking at the monthly view on travel search sites like Skyscanner to see the best possible option available for flight dates.

Set up alerts: Prices are always changing, so if you're hoping to travel to a specific destination, or on specific dates, set up a price alert so you can be quick if a deal comes up. Skyscanner specifically has a price alerts system for any cost changes.

Consider "Everywhere": If you're hoping for a new adventure, or a little rest and relaxation, but you don't have a specific destination in mind, the "Everywhere" search on Skyscanner may be your new best friend to discover the most affordable vacation destination possible.

Flexible dates: There may be certain times where you need to travel for specific dates, but the best deals are really revealed when you open yourself up to some flexibility. Even changing your travel dates by a day, or a week, can result in significant savings.
