Slow wine usa 2023 returns with a bang.

Slow Wine USA ’s annual tour returned with a bang to five American cities March 6 – 14 2023. Stops included San Francisco, Seattle, Dallas, Miami, and New York. This year’s event introduced almost 1,500 trade and media to wines listed in the guide.

slow wine world tour 2023

Selected cities reflect a changing US consumer market. For example, San Francisco replaced Los Angeles due to the former’s proximity to Napa and Sonoma.

Additionally, Seattle replaced Portland about three years ago. “Seattle has been great – and a great surprise for a lot of producers,” said Daniela Porro, senior account executive for Colangelo PR, which represents Slow Wine USA.

“Last year we did Austin, and we’re doing Dallas this year,” she added. “Texas is a huge market. And Miami has been a target city because of the influx of not only Italian people living [there], but post-COVID, so many people from New York have moved to Miami. They also have a huge Latin American community down there, which are big, big spenders and drinkers.”

The US first joined Slow Wine Guide six years ago, and published its first stand-alone version in 2021.“Over the last six years, the Slow Wine Guide USA has evolved to include criteria that wineries must meet to be listed in what is the only annual guide of its kind,” said national editor Deborah Parker Wong via email. Currently, the guide reviews approximately 289 US wineries, and over 2,000 Italian wineries.

Parker Wong and co-editor Pam Strayer, a noted sustainability expert, prove the backbone of the USA guide, overseeing field editors in California, Oregon, Washington, New York. “We list producers who farm without the use of synthetic herbicides, and whose wines are good quality or better,” explained Parker Wong. “Not only do we visit the wineries, but with our farming audit, we do the homework for consumers who want to support wineries that prioritize land stewardship as the foundation of their many sustainable practices.”

Effectively, the Slow Wine Guide USA serves as a greenwashing antidote, recognizing only “fully transparent certifications” such as CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers), USDA Organic, and Demeter in their audits. It also discusses merits of other methods. “Certification has never been required to be listed in the guide,” stressed Parker Wong,  “But in states like Oregon, Washington, and New York, where pesticide use reports are not public record, it certainly makes our job easier.”

The tour also presented seminars on emerging wine regions like Oltrepò Pavese, Asolo Prosecco, and Abruzzo’s Villamagna DOC, plus promising new producers. “For the people that come to our tastings, they can find producers that are family-based, and not so big – under 10,000 cases every year,” said Slow Wine Guide editor-in-chief Giancarlo Gariglio. “These small family-owned wineries also control all steps  of production, from farming to bottling to selling. And they are very focused on the terroir – so that you can find your wines very, very close to the place in which they are produced.”

Ultimately, the annual Slow Wine USA tour offers trade and media an easy way to discover terroir-driven, sustainably produced wines listed in the guide. “As we begin our seventh year of research for the 2024 guide,” concluded Parker Wong, “The best way we can support our wineries is for more consumers to use the guide to find them and their delicious wines.”

SLOW WINE-A Press and Trade Showcase of Top Producers and The Slow Wine Guide

The Slow Wine World Tour 2023 recently had their New York City event at Eataly Downtown. The press and trade gathering has toured the U.S. in cities that included San Francisco, Seattle, Dallas, and Miami.

We attended the NYC event and were delighted to engage with producers and experience the impressive wines that are produced in the states of California, Washington, and Oregon along with countries that include Italy and Argentina. The tour coincides with this year's publication of the Slow Wine Guide that is prized by wine lovers.

The Slow Wine Guide evaluates over 2,000 Italian wineries and over 289 American ones and treats them with the utmost respect and attention. Slow Wine takes the time to get personal with each winery to create a well-informed detail review of the wines and the people behind the production. For the first time, those wineries that receive the official Slow Wine seal are 100% free of chemical herbicides, a quality that the Guide continues to passionately support.

SLOW WINE-A Press and Trade Showcase of Top Producers and The Slow Wine Guide

The representatives we met at the Slow Wine Tour 2023 in NYC were pleased to present their wines for tasting, discuss winemaking techniques, and they all expressed great pride in their portfolios. With well over 100 wineries represented, there were endless possibilities to experience red, white, rose, and dessert wines with distinctive profiles. Some of the ones that we enjoyed were Ettore Winery in California; Ruby Vineyard in Oregon; Arnaldo Rivera in Piedmont, Italy; La Spinetta in Piedmont, Italy; Tenuta Gorghi Tondi in Sicily, Italy; Poggio La Noce in Tuscany, Italy; Baricci in Tuscany, Italy; Vinha Unna in Brazil; Tilia Wines in Argentina; and others.

SLOW WINE-A Press and Trade Showcase of Top Producers and The Slow Wine Guide

A fascinating Master Class that focused on the Oltrepo Pavese region in Italy was presented by Susannah L. Gold of Vigneto Communications. The region is located south of Lombardy just 40 km from Milan. Grapes that are grown in the area include Pino Nero, Croatina, Barbera, Riesling, and Pino Noir. There are 1,700 wineries that operate in Oltrepo Pavese. The wines we tasted offered diversity and a great deal of finesse. They included Oltrepo Pavese Metodo Classico Brut Moratti Rose 2015 by Castello di Cigognola; Pinot Nero dell'Oltrepo Pavese Noir 2018 by Tenuta Mazzolino and Sangue di Giudi dell'Oltrepo Pavese 2021 by Francesco Quaquarini.

We encourage our readers to explore the vast wine choices that are available and to learn about wine producers from regions around the globe.

Slow Wine USA Tour at Eataly, NYC, NY, USA

Slow Wine USA - Photo By Luxury Experience

On March 14, 2023, I attended the 2023 Slow Wine Tour at Eataly NYC Downtown in New York. This was my first experience with the Slow Wine World Tour, and it was also my first visit to Eataly NYC Downtown located at 4 World Trade Center on the 3 rd floor. In addition to the New York show, the Slow Wine Tour was also presented in Dallas, Miami, San Francisco, and Seattle on various dates throughout the month of March.

Over the course of several hours in the afternoon, I was able "to travel via my palate and without a passport" and experience delicious wines from across Italy from the regions of Abruzzo, Campania, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Liguria, Lombardy, Marche, Piedmont, Puglia, Sardinia, Sicily, Trentino Alto Adige, Tuscany, Umbria, and Veneto.

I also tasted excellent wines from Argentina from the regions of Mendoza and Patagonia, from Bolivia from Valle de Cinti, Chuquisaca; from Brazil from Pinto Bandeira and Rio Grande do Sul; from Chile, and from Mexico from the regions of El Marqués, Queretaro, and San Miguel de Allende.

From the United States there were wines from Oregon from Southern Oregon and the Willamette Valley, and from California from the Central Coast in Santa Barbara, and from the North Coast from the regions of Mendocino, Napa, and Sonoma.

Paired with Eataly NYC Downtown’s delectable assortment of cheeses: Housemade Mozzarella, Gorgonzola Dolce and marmalades, Olive Marinate (a selection of house-marinated olives), charcuterie: Bresaola (beef), Finocchiona (pork), Mortadella (pork), Prosciutto di Parma (pork), Speck (pork), salads, pasta: Tortiglioni Ai Funghi, made with Di Martino Tortiglioni, Mushroom Ragu, and Parmigiano Reggiano DOP, and assorted pizzas: Margherita Pizza alla Pala which was Roman Style Pizza with Tomato Sauce, Housemade Mozzarella, and Fresh Basil, and Pepperoni Pizza. It was a perfect day for drinking and eating well.

About Eataly

"In November 2002, the Eataly concept was born from Oscar Farinetti’s idea sketched on a piece of paper. The idea was simple: to gather under one roof high-quality food at sustainable and reasonable prices for ALL, celebrate Italian biodiversity, and create an informal, natural, and simple place to eat, shop, and learn. Eataly stands for "Eating Italian" which encompasses the history and the food culture of Italy, the ease to prepare its dishes, and the many qualities that Italy has to offer. After five years of research and hard work, the first Eataly opened its doors in Torino on January 27, 2007, when an old vermouth factory was transformed into Eataly Torino Lingotto – the very first multifunctional marketplace dedicated to Italian excellence in the world. The rest is history! Since then, Eataly has expanded, with more than 40 locations throughout Italy and the world."

The soil, like food, should be considered a right to be guaranteed for all, not a commodity to be exploited. #SlowWineFair2024 shares a radical message that resounds beyond the wine world: we need a shift from conventional viticulture to an agroecological approach that considers the planet ... before profit. We must contain the spread of monocultures, curb the indiscriminate use of synthetic chemicals, protect the soil with mulch, and reduce or eliminate unnecessary plowing. Troubled times for wine in 2023: global production and consumption shrinking.

In 2023, the world wine production declined by 10% to reach 237.3 million hectolitres. Most major wine countries experienced a very difficult year. France regained its position as the world’s biggest wine producer. Wine consumption worldwide also declined. It reached 221 million hectolitres in 2023, which is a decrease compared to 2022 with 2.6%. Equally, the world's vineyard surface area shrunk in 2023, but only modestly, with 0.5% to 7.2 million hectares. Thanks to the decline in both production and consumption, the market is still in balance but has suffered significant inflationary pressure.

John Barker, director general of The International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), presented today the estimates for the wine industry in 2024. (All numbers given here are preliminary estimates by the OIV.)

World Wine Production — shrinking

The world’s total wine production declined dramatically in 2023, shrinking by 10% from 2022 to reach 237.3 million hectolitres (Mhl). This is a two-decade-long trend. In 2004, the world's wine production reached around 295 Mhl. Today, it is around 20% lower.

The volume in 2023 is the lowest wine production since 1961. The picture varies from country to country, but most big wine producers saw a decline. Some countries experienced very dramatic declines.

France regained its position as the world’s biggest wine producer and actually increased the volume by 4%. However, both Italy and Spain, the number two and three, saw very significant reductions in wine production, minus 23% and 21% respectively.

The Best Romantic Comedy Of The Last Year Just Hit Netflix

Apple iphone 16 unique all new design promised in new report, rudy giuliani and mark meadows indicted in arizona fake electors case.

The decline is mainly due to the extreme climate conditions that several countries experienced, including rains, floods, fires, etc., and the ensuing problems with vineyard diseases.

World wine production 2023

Of the top ten countries for wine production, only France, the USA, and Portugal increased output.

It is worth noting that these changes mean that the USA has significantly narrowed the gap to “the big three” (France, Italy, and Spain). Next year (2024) will show if this is a permanent rapprochement or if it was temporary. Following those, we have the traditional southern hemisphere “gang of four”, Chile, Australia, South Africa, and Argentina, which are close to each other in wine volume, but Germany is catching up on them.

The world’s three biggest wine producers, France, Italy and Spain, together only have a hair’s breadth from making half of all the world’s wine.

The world’s top ten countries with the biggest production of wine are:

  • France, 28 Mhl, +4%
  • Italy, 38.3 Mhl, -23%
  • Spain, 28.3 Mhl, -21%
  • USA, 24.3%, +9%
  • Chile, 11 Mhl, -11%
  • Australia, 9.6 Mhl, -26%
  • South Africa, 9.3 Mhl, -10%
  • Argentina, 8.8 Mhl, -23%
  • Germany, 8.6 Mhl, -4%
  • Portugal, 7.5%, +10%

World wine production, top countries, 2023

World Vineyard Surface Area — shrinking

The world’s total acreage of vineyards declined moderately, by 0.5% to 7.2 million hectares. Even if a loss of 0.5% may seem modest, the decline in “wine production capacity” is a trend that has been going on for more than twenty years since a peak in 2003. The global vineyard acreage was then just over 7.8 million hectares. Almost 8% has been lost.

Spain remains the biggest country with almost one million hectares. France is second; China is third and Italy is number four.

The world’s top ten countries with the largest vineyard area are:

  • Spain, 945 Mha (million hectares), with a declining ten-year trend and a decline in ‘24
  • France, 792 Mha, stable trend, decline in ‘24
  • China, 756 Mha, uncertain trend, stable ‘24
  • Italy, 720 Mha, slightly upward trend, stable in ‘24
  • Türkiye, 410 Mha, strongly declining trend, decline in ‘24
  • USA, 392 Mhl, significantly declining trend, stable ‘24
  • Argentina, 205 Mhl, declining trend, decline in ‘24
  • Romania, 187 Mhl, declining trend, decline in ‘24
  • Portugal, 182 Mhl, declining trend, decline in ‘24
  • India, 180 Mhl, growing trend, growth in ‘24

The EU countries have 45% of the world’s total acreage and five of the top ten countries. The six biggest countries represent 56% of the total.

It should be noted that these numbers include all vineyards, including those producing grapes for other uses than wine, such as raisins and fruit juice.

World Wine Consumption — shrinking

The world’s wine consumption follows the same negative trend: global wine consumption declined in 2023.

The world’s wine consumption reached 221 million hectolitres (Mhl) in 2023, which is a decrease of 2.6% compared to 2022. This is also a long-term trend. Consumption reached a peak in 2007 when it reached around 250 Mhl. It is now down around 12% from that level.

OIV estimates that the decline in consumption is due to the covid effect and inflation, leading to higher consumer prices.

World wine consumption 2023

Most countries have only seen moderate changes in consumption. The exceptions are China, where wine consumption dropped by a quarter, and Romania, where it increased by one-fifth.

The USA remains the world’s biggest wine-consuming country. It is followed by the big European wine-producing countries France, Italy and Germany. Then we have the UK, Spain and Russia.

World wine consumption, major countries, 2023

But this is not the end of the bad news for the global wine industry.

World Wine Exports and International Trade — declining

Wine exports saw a decline in both volume (-6.3%) and in value (-4.7%) in 2023 compared to 2022.

The OIV also tracks another interesting number that they call “the market internationalisation index”. It indicates how much wine is consumed in country other than where it was produced. In other words, it is another way of looking at domestic consumption compared to exports; an illustration of wine globalisation. It is also something that sends a message to wine producers: “export markets are increasingly important”.

The “market internationalisation index” has seen a rapid increase, meaning that more and more wine is consumed somewhere else than in its home market. Twenty-four years ago, in 2000, the market internationalisation index was around 27%. Well over two-thirds of all wine was consumed on the “home market”. Twenty-one years later, the index had reached 48% - almost half of all wine is consumed in another country than where it was produced.

But the last two years, 2022 and 2023, have seen a decline in the internationalisation index. In 2023, it was 45%.

There is no obvious explanation for this. Small harvests or inflationary pressures would likely affect both domestic and international markets, so the answer is probably not there. The OIV pointed to one possible explanation: destocking, particularly in the North American market. Have (primarily) US importers bought too much wine in the two first covid years (2020 and 2021) that they are now releasing into the market, and thus need to buy less from abroad? Possibly. We will see what happens over the next few years.

Some good news for the world wine industry after all

The numbers paint a bleak picture of the world wine industry in 2023. However, there are some bright spots.

With total production dropping significantly in 2023, one might have feared a potential shortage looming. But the parallel drop in consumption negates that. Production and consumption are still in balance, with production exceeding consumption by 5-10%. This difference is needed to satisfy the demand for other uses, such as vinegar production and distillation.

From a producer perspective, the price evolution has also been positive. The average export price for wine reached a record 3.62 euros per litre, an increase of 2% from 2022. Some countries have fared particularly well. Both France and the USA have almost doubled the average export price over ten years. For France, it is now 9.4 euro/l, and for the USA, it is 5.5 euro/l. Most other big exporters have seen a similar evolution over the last ten years. With the exception of Canada.

This is, of course, a clear illustration of the inflationary pressure on the wine industry. And it is, of course, less good news for the consumers.

Global wine consumption continues to decline in 2023

According to the International Organization of Vine and Wine, consumption fell by 2.6% year-on-year to 221 million hectoliters. Similarly, on the production side, indicators are also negative.

Global wine volumes evaporated again in 2023. Global consumption fell by 2.6% year-on-year to 221 million hectoliters, according to data published on Thursday, April 25, by the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV). The last time levels were this low was in 1996.

The OIV estimates that the decline really began in 2018, prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, which triggered profound changes in consumer habits due to the repeated closure of bars and restaurants. This was before the outbreak of the war in Ukraine in February 2022, which amplified the phenomenon of inflation and supply chain tensions.

The epicenter of the phenomenon can be found in China, where consumption has fallen by 2 million hectoliters a year since 2018. The deceleration was even more brutal in 2023, as volumes plunged by 24.9%, to 6.8 million hectoliters. China is now in ninth place in the ranking of the most wine-hungry states. Six years ago, it ranked fifth.

Unfavorable weather conditions

However, similar trends are evident in other countries as well, where people are choosing moderation and making trade-offs due to rising prices. Even the US, the world's leading consumer, has not been spared, with a decline of 3% to 33.3 million hectoliters. France, ranking second, also saw a decline of 2.4%, dropping to 24.4 million hectoliters. Italy also had a drop of 2.5% to 21.8 million hectoliters.

And yet, some are sailing against the tide. Spain, Russia, Romania, Japan and Brazil are all examples, where glasses of wine were more plentiful in 2023. It was a craze that failed to counterbalance the general downturn.

On the production side, too, the lights are red. Unfavorable weather conditions affected many vineyards. As a result, the harvest was meager, even historically low. The OIV estimated it at 237 million hectoliters, down 10% from 2022, marking the lowest level since 1961. Beyond the occasional adverse climate events, the slow shrinkage of the world's vineyards, which decreased 0.5% in 2023, is contributing to the lower volume of grapes harvested.

Europe, the sector's main driver, which accounts for 60% of global wine volumes, clearly illustrates this deteriorating situation. The collection is the second worst of the century, behind the black year of 2017, with a plunge in production of 10.6% to 144.5 million hectoliters. However, the fate of the wine-growing triplet – Spain, Italy and France, who vie for the world podium every year – was not comparable. Drought and extremely high temperatures on the one hand and torrential rain on the other dashed the hopes of Spanish and Italian winegrowers. Both vineyards suffered losses of over 20%.
