star trek strange new worlds season 1 soundtrack

The full announcement from Lakeshore Records, which includes commentary from primary series composer Nami Melumad as well as main title theme composer Jeff Russo.

Lakeshore Records is set to release Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 1—Original Series Soundtrack digitally on April 28 with original music by award-winning composer Nami Melumad –she recently won the David Raskin Award for Emerging Talent at this year’s SCL Awards for this score. Emmy Award-winning and Grammy-nominated composer Jeff Russo, known for his definitive scores to several Star Trek series in including Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Discovery, created the main title and end credits themes.   Notes Melumad: “Creating the ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ score has been one of the biggest honors of my life. A captain is nothing without her crew and I’d like to thank the artists, musicians, and friends that made this Season 1 score album possible: Matt Decker, Jeff Kryka, Tracie Turnbull, Natalia Goldstein, Dennis Sands, Brian Vibberts, Vincent Cirlli, Jamie Olivera, Tom Hardisty, Rich Wheeler, Whitney Martin, Gina Zimmeti, Nick Cazares, Lisa Janacu, Booker White and our wonderful orchestra musicians. Also, many thanks to Alex Kurtzman and the Secret Hideout, Paramount+ and Lakeshore records! Happy listening!“   Adds Russo: “Being asked to write the theme for the show that was going to directly precede the original series was such an honor. Tying into the sound of the iconic theme while creating something unique for our new adventure was such a fantastic artistic experience.”

Strange New Worlds‘ Season 1 Soundtrack in Review

There’s nothing strange about the sounds of Strange New Worlds …

Strange New Worlds may have seriously taken Star Trek fans by storm, but it doesn’t take itself too seriously, and nor does the recently released full-length soundtrack album by composer Nami Melumad . The music itself retains flavours of the previous Star Treks and their themes (except maybe Enterprise — no pop ballads here!), while showcasing an original composition style that brings Strange New Worlds boldy into the modern frontier of the Trek universe.

At first glance, the impeccable cover art shows our crew headed by Captain Christopher Pike, ready to take on the universe and carry out the mission of the USS Enterprise . However, the titles of the tracks, in contrast, explore their own strange new world of puns and wordplay. They are both a nod to the subject of each piece and a piece of known pop culture.

Audio-wise, orchestral strings make up the backbone of the album, and there is a lot of use of heavy brass, while the orchestra’s wind section trickles through like the stars sparkling in a vast, unknown expanse. Large percussion adds some drama in certain tracks, where a softer, slower start builds a more dramatic climax with thicker musical textures.

As for particular selections, fans of our favourite Vulcan couple will enjoy the romantically influenced “Put a T’Pring On It” (with its subtle woodwind stylings over strings) or “T’Pring It On” — two musical pieces that could both be considered “love themes.” Undeniably, “Chris Crossed” , “Everyone Wants a Piece of the Pike” , and “The Pike Maneuver” are both bold and determined — with a quiet, firm, confident sound — while the first of these also musically sets up some of the conflict we know our captain faces within himself. “Pirates In the Sky” is a much more energetic and dare we say swashbuckling track, while “Gorn With the Wind” and “Gorn But Not Forgotten” combine drama, urgency, and a sense of loss at the hands of a ruthless adversary. “When the Hemmer Falls” is both dramatically darker, with lower brass over strings, and incorporates some sadness with a few sprinkled piano notes over steady strings, while coming to a bolder finish that nods back to some of the TNG-style fanfare, a worthy send off for a beloved character.

As stated earlier, the soundtrack does incorporate many variations of familiar Trek motifs, particularly those heard during the Original Series and TNG eras. In contrast to the steady and solemn themes of Deep Space Nine and Voyager , this soundtrack includes many examples of the much more regal-sounding fanfare of the older shows. That’s not to say that Strange New Worlds simply copied and slightly altered a few elements (like how Star Trek: The Motion Picture ‘s theme became the Next Generation theme), but rather Nami Melumad has taken just enough inspiration from the past, and following in the footsteps of many fellow great composers, created variations on familiar Trek motifs and melodies that are recognizable, yet new and unique.

Last but not least, the album features Jeff Russo ’s work as the show’s opening and end themes. These combine many elements of The Original Series ’ opening, such as the chimes and the fanfare that fans know, but with the majestic and bold style of the Motion Picture and Next Generation musical voicing.

Each track of this soundtrack, when paired with its moment in the franchise, helps to paint a much more evocative set of scenes, which can be relived through listening. So sit back, relax with your favourite Romulan ale or bloodwine vintage and let Strange New Worlds take your ears and imagination to the final frontier.

Can you tell me which orchestra plays the beautiful music of Strange New Worlds? Especially for “Everyone Wants a Piece of Pike”? It’s an incredible piece.

Guitarist Jeff Russo is an award-winning film and TV composer, also known for his work as a founding member of the band Tonic. Russo emerged to chart success, nabbing a mainstream rock hit with "If You Could Only See" off Tonic's 1996 debut, Lemon Parade. The group also picked up two Grammy nominations for 2002's Head on Straight. Russo expanded into soundtrack work, scoring film and television productions, including winning an Emmy for his work on FX's acclaimed drama Fargo. He has supplied the music to shows like Star Trek: Discovery, The Umbrella Academy, and Legion. He also scored director Noah Hawley's 2019 film Lucy in the Sky and the 2021 drama Oslo.

Born in 1969, Russo started playing guitar in his teens, inspired by his love of bands like the Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin. In 1990, he formed the alt-rock outfit Tonic with his childhood friend singer/guitarist Emerson Hart. They broke through with 1996's Lemon Parade, which went platinum, buoyed by the hits "If You Could Only See" and "Open Up Your Eyes." Sugar followed in 1999, spawning the hit "You Wanted More," which was also included on the American Pie soundtrack. With 2002's Head on Straight, Tonic received two Grammy nominations. The group's fifth album, the eponymously titled Tonic, arrived in 2010.

While continuing his work in Tonic, Russo began branching out, writing music for commercials and producing. In 2014, he gained wider recognition winning an Emmy for his score to FX's Golden Globe-winning series Fargo. He has remained a sought-after composer, scoring Starz's Counterpart, starring J.K. Simmons, Neftlix's sci-fi series Altered Carbon, and HBO's Golden Globe- and Emmy-nominated series The Night Of, starring John Turturro and Riz Ahmed. He also picked up a BAFTA nomination for Best Music for Annapurna Interactive's video game What Remains of Edith Finch.

In 2017, Russo scored the Marvel-based FX show Legion. In addition, he supplies the music for the Peabody Award-nominated Star Trek: Discovery and Netflix's The Umbrella Academy, based on the Gerard Way comic book series. Russo has also scored for film, including Mark Wahlberg's 2018 action-thriller Mile 22 and the 2018 Lizzie Borden biographical thriller Lizzie, starring Chloe Sevigny and Kristen Stewart. In 2019, he scored director Noah Hawley's film Lucy in the Sky, starring Natalie Portman. Russo also supplied the soundtrack to the 2021 TV movie Oslo, based on the negotiations surrounding the 1993 Oslo Accords. ~ Matt Collar

Star Trek's Scotty played by a Scot for first time

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

For the first time in almost 60 years Star Trek character Scotty is being played by a Scottish actor.

Previously the role has been filled by Canadian actor James Doohan and Englishman Simon Pegg.

Now Scottish actor Martin Quinn is portraying a younger version of the character in the prequel series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

"We are rebranding him," Martin told BBC Scotland news. "He's from Paisley now."

Montgomery "Scotty" Scott has been a character in the science fiction franchise since it first began in 1966.

Doohan played Scotty in the original series and seven Star Trek films before Pegg took on the role for director JJ Abrams' reboots from 2009.

Martin's young Scotty appeared as a surprise cameo at the end of the second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and he will play a recurring role in season three.

The 30-year-old, from the Gallowhill area of Paisley, says he hopes even more Scottish people will watch Star Trek now that they have cast a real Scot.

"It's the power of representation isn't it?" he said.

"I was always into Star Wars because Ewan McGregor was there. It's because there was a Scottish guy in Star Wars.

"Even though he was doing an English accent, I was like 'that's so cool, he's from here and he's in Hollywood'."

While neither Doohan or Pegg had a natural Scottish accent, both actors and their character were beloved by fans.

Martin says: "I think James Doohan based the character off some Aberdonian he had heard, and even Linlithgow has claimed him, but I'm not sure what that's from."

In 2022, when Martin was auditioning for the series, producers gave the show a code name so he would not know it was Star Trek.

"I suppose that helped because you weren’t putting pressure on yourself to emulate James Doohan," he says.

Since taking the role, he says he has been working with writers to suggest authentic Scottish changes to his character.

"They let me put in the word 'baw-heid' instead of 'turnip-heid," he says.

"Maybe they think all Scottish people are farmers? But they were very gracious about it.

"And [the writers] are wanting to be authentic to Scotland as well, and that's really nice - not everyone's like that."

Martin says his accent has caused occasional confusion with the North American cast and crew on set.

"I'm constantly having to enunciate because I don't think they know what I'm saying," he says.

"It’s trying to find the balance, because it’s not just Scottish people watching this TV show, but I want to be as authentic as possible to how I speak."

Martin began his acting career when he was six years old at PACE Youth Theatre in Paisley.

The theatre school's alumni also include actorJames McAvoy and singer-songwriter Paolo Nutini.

When he was 18, Martin was cast in the lead role in the National Theatre of Scotland production of Let The Right One In.

It took him to the Dundee Rep and eventually to London's West End where he was spotted by the actors Richard Wilson and Alan Rickman.

They funded the last portion of his scholarship that let him attend Guildhall drama school in London.

However, it was Martin's first paid role in BBC comedy Limmy's Show that he says he owes "everything to".

"It meant I got praised for doing acting as opposed to a slagging" by his classmates, he says.

He also says there can be a working-class boy stigma that if you prefer acting to football there is something wrong with you.

"We’re potentially missing out on the next generation of really good Scottish actors and that is a bit of a worry," he says.

  • Is Strange New Worlds the Most Innovative Star Trek Series Since the Original?

star trek strange new worlds season 1 soundtrack

As Star Trek is almost 60 years old, the latest series from this iconic Sci-Fi series may be the most groundbreaking since the original series.

The refreshing and entertaining storyline will please both newer fans of Star Trek and even the fans of the original Star Trek series that aired back in 1966.

The first season of Star Trek Strange New Worlds first premiered on the fifth of May 2022. It is actually a sequel to the slightly controversial Discovery series that didn't follow some of the known or established lore in the Star Trek universe.

Captain Pike Strange New Worlds Star Trek - Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

How Does Strange New Worlds Fit Into The Star Trek Universe

The original Star Trek series takes place in 2265, while the Strange New Worlds series starts in 2259. This means the iconic Captain Kirk is not the captain of the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701), which means the current captain will be Captain Christopher Pike .

Star Trek New Worlds Poster - Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

This may be a bit of a change for some Star Trek fans, but it's a good change.

Star Trek's iconic characters from the original series, such as Spock, Scotty, and Nyota Uhura, are also in the Strange New World series.

Some minor characters from the original show also appear throughout the new series, making Strange New Worlds feel like the show was meant to be.

Why is Strange New Worlds The Most Innovative Star Trek Show In Many Years

As the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds series shows us the adventures of Captain Christopher Pike and the crew at the start of USS Enterprise, it will immediately be compared to the original series.

Uncontrollable Song - Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

The cast of the new Star Trek show has a compelling story arc, which can make fans of the show feel attached and almost there with them during the crew's many adventures.

The new show takes many elements of the original show, such as the optimism and fun that the crew seems to lavish on.

This does not mean the Strange New Worlds series doesn't have any heart-wrenching moments. The show does have some heavy hitters, as any Star Trek fan knows the fate of Captain Christopher Pike.

Spoiler warning for new Star Trek fans who haven't watched the original series or finished Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 1 :

Captain Christopher Pike will die.

Captain's Orders - Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Episode 10

Captain Christopher Pike's death happened in 2266, seven years after the Strange New Worlds series started and two years after the original series.

Christopher Pike dies during an accident while trying to save a handful of trainees on a Class J Starship.

Strange New Worlds doesn't shy away from the fact that Captain Christopher Pike will die; during the show, he learns that he will die and that he has to learn to face his future.

Anson Mount , who plays Christopher Pike in the Strange New Worlds series, gives us one of the best Star Trek captains who has even been in the series.

The Captain and Number One - Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Episode 8

Anson Mount conveys the essence of how a Star Trek captain should act and treat his crew during any situation, even during a stressful situation.

This doesn't mean this captain doesn't break the rules; he just bends them when there is a need to do so.

Another great reason many Star Trek fans hold Strange New Worlds in such high regard is that it is family-friendly.

This alone is why the show is so popular, as families who grew up watching Star Trek can now spread the joy of Star Trek to their children without worrying about any taboo subjects or vulgar words popping up in the episode.

Battle Pike - Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Episode 10

Why Does Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Look So Good?

Strange New Worlds does a great job of using the older elements and designs of the original series while still finding new ways to improve the show's look and feel.

For example, during the Star Trek: Discovery series, the USS Enterprise does make an appearance in the show.

However, the design elements did not match how the starship was supposed to look during the original series.

The latest Star Trek series did a great slight remodel of the starship hull to bring it closer to the original designs while still giving the design a modern feel.

Command - Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Episode 10

Some fans of the original series may think that the "new" USS Enterprise may look too modern and have lost the charm of the '60s version; this can be seen with the bridge of the Enterprise.

The bridge of a starship in Star Trek is the most important room on all Star Trek shows; this means they are iconic, and many fans know exactly how they look.

The Strange New Worlds creators revamped the bridge with its own elegant and unique design, but it still has many elements of the original set.

The Strange New Worlds series also relies heavily on props and filming sets that help the actors easily immerse themselves in their roles.

This allows the acting and chemistry between the actors to flow naturally.

Trio in Engineering - Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Episode 9

How Will the Show Progress?

As the Strange New Worlds series is a prequel to the original series, there is only so much time before they reach the original series starting date.

But don't worry because this doesn't mean that the show will not have any compelling stories or familiar faces for fans to enjoy.

As the series continues on Paramount+ , we'll surely see some exciting and unique storylines.

What do you think about the two shows?

‘Star Trek: Discovery’ S5 Review: Final Season Is Its Best

This season has a brisk pace and the sense of fun that in the past has been crushed under the weight of grave galactic stakes..

star trek strange new worlds season 1 soundtrack

Star Trek: Discovery occupies an interesting place in the celebrated franchise. It was the first Trek series of the streaming era, the first to debut behind a paywall, the first produced after J.J. Abrams’ big screen reboot, and the first to put a woman of color in the captain’s chair. Discovery redefined the look and feel of the franchise on television, bringing Trek into the modern world of feature-level photography, effects, and pace of story. It blazed a trail for a new generation of Trek media, like direct spin-off Strange New Worlds and the upcoming Section 31 TV movie. It is also not terribly popular amidst the old guard of Trekkies, nor is it a mainstream hit or a critical darling. Discovery has struggled to find its footing from the very beginning and is still uneven after years of retooling. I do not consider its cancellation after five seasons to be a tragic loss for television. However, Discovery may still have one “first” left to achieve: It may be the first Star Trek series whose final season is its best.

(A quick personal note to the handful of Trekkies who just clutched their pearls: Season 4 of Enterprise is not better than Season 3, it merely has more familiar stuff for fans to point at with childlike glee. And you’ve likely already read my thoughts on Picard ’s final season .)

Even as a critic of the show, I have to acknowledge that every season of Discovery has started with a bang. It’s the nature of a serialized, season-long story arc to kick off with something resembling the first act of a feature film, and Season 5 is no different. The opening chapter, “Red Directive,” is a fast-paced space adventure packed with flashy action set pieces. The illustrious Captain Michael Burnham ( Sonequa Martin-Green ) and her crew are on the trail of Moll (Eve Harlow) and L’ak (Elias Toufexis), a spacefaring Bonnie and Clyde who have stumbled across a secret with enormous implications for the future of the galaxy. Just like the previous three seasons, this sets Team Disco off on another cosmic scavenger hunt, jumping to a new world each week to find the next clue to the season’s grander mystery.

star trek strange new worlds season 1 soundtrack

Historically, this is where Discovery has run into trouble. While each chapter tends to have its own contained adventure plot or even a classic Trek “message of the week,” they’re rarely that memorable and they advance the season’s overarching storyline without adding much depth. This season, though, has a brisk pace and a sense of fun that, previously, has been crushed under the weight of grave galactic stakes. Paramount has promoted this season as having an Indiana Jones energy to it , and that’s a fair comparison. The characters are enjoying themselves more, and for the first time since Season 2, the story isn’t built around some unfathomable tragedy. T o my best recollection, none of the episodes provided in advance to critics feature any crying. That’s four consecutive episodes, possibly a new track record.

This is not the only way in which Discovery ’s new season throttles back on the show’s occasionally cloying sentimentality. The season premiere introduces a new character, Captain Rayner ( Callum Keith Rennie ), a gruff pragmatist who serves as a contrast to Burnham’s soft-spoken, personable, firmly feminine command style. At first, Rayner appears to be a straw man representing aggro, entitled white male authority, a trope Discovery goes to often. As the season progresses, Rayner acquires some depth and even some likability. It’s fun to watch this grumpy old guy interact with a cast full of characters who are totally in touch with their feelings. Most importantly, Rayner provides something that the series has needed ever since Burnham took command of Discovery: a professional peer with whom to disagree and occasionally compromise. It’s an essential role that her first officer, Saru ( Doug Jones ), has become too adoring and loyal to play. Burnham has earned the devotion of her crew, but watching her gracefully manage dissent only enhances her aura of strength and leadership.

star trek strange new worlds season 1 soundtrack

Even though production was wrapped before Discovery was canceled (with additional shooting after that announcement to tie up loose ends), Season Five feels like a finale from the very beginning. A few characters are moving on with their lives, pursuing new interests and relationships. There are more fun, non-intrusive callbacks to Treks past than in the last two seasons, which makes it feel a bit like a victory lap for the streaming era’s flagship show. Above all, there is a sense of ease, as if the cast and crew have finally got their engine running smoothly and can cruise to the finish line. It’s the energy a series possesses at its peak, a point to which fans will often look back and say “They probably should have stopped there.” Barring a significant misstep in its final six episodes, Star Trek: Discovery will never be past its prime, and that’s a distinction its creators can wear with pride.

Star Trek's Jonathan Frakes Calls One Strange New Worlds Season 3 Episode His 'Best' Ever

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" has a knack for proving skeptics wrong. You say Paramount+ can't do a prequel "Star Trek" series that reimagines iconic characters like Spock, Kirk, and Uhura with a cast of new actors? Watch them. Think it's impossible to strike the original series' balance between earnest pathos, sci-fi geekery, warm-hearted hijinks, and indelible camp? Think again. Don't even get this show started on which genres do and don't check classic "Star Trek" boxes; it'll blow your personal definition of classic "Trek" wide open with a Medieval costume drama, an animation-live action crossover, a musical, or -- in the upcoming season, according to Variety  -- a "Hollywood murder mystery."

In Variety's new cover story about the future of the franchise Gene Roddenberry first created in 1966, the future of "Star Trek" is bright. The dynamic, weird, hilarious, and sometimes heartbreaking prequel series "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" comes across as the central star in that constellation, and the powers that be don't seem inclined to stop trying new things with the series anytime soon. "As long as we're in storytelling that is cogent and sure-handed, I'm not sure there is [any genre 'Strange New Worlds' can't do]," says series co-showrunner and executive producer Akiva Goldsman. "Could it do Muppets? Sure. Could it do black and white, silent, slapstick? Maybe!"

That's High Praise

Thrillingly, the show is bringing Jonathan Frakes, the actor and filmmaker behind season 2's "Star Trek: Lower Decks" crossover episode "Those Old Scientists," on to direct the murder mystery episode of season 3. Frakes, who played William Riker for seven seasons of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" as well as several movies and the final season of "Star Trek: Picard," says the upcoming genre outing is "the best episode of television [he's] ever done." That's certainly saying something coming from the actor-turned-director, as he's stepped behind the camera for 29 episodes of "Trek" and counting.

In addition to "Those Old Scientists," Frakes' past "Star Trek" directorial efforts include several standout episodes of "The Next Generation," from the trippy time loop story "Cause and Effect" to the courtroom drama "The Drumhead" to "The Offspring," a one-off in which Data (Brent Spiner) raises a child android. Other well-received "Trek" episodes directed by Frakes include the Odo-centric "Deep Space Nine" premiere "The Search, Part II," the intense Section 31-set "Star Trek: Discovery" episode "Project Daedalus," and two of the best episodes of "Star Trek: Picard" season 3  -- and the show in general, for that matter.

With so many epic "Trek" episodes under his belt, the fact that Frakes thinks his return to "Strange New Worlds" is a career-high makes us all the more excited for it. Elsewhere in the cover story, the actor-director spoke positively about the behind-the-scenes teams that have brought the Paramount+ era of "Trek" together. "The scope was so much different than anything we had ever done on 'Next Gen,'" Frakes said when talking about the property's epic return to TV in the 2010s. "Every department has the resources to create." Fans will get to see just what they've created with the new murder mystery episode when "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" returns to the streamer sometime in 2025.
