Description [ ]

Summary [ ].

Spock is on the mountain where Kirk was buried by Captain Picard. Sitting , begins to reminisce about the final adventure of James T. Kirk before being lost on the maiden voyage of the Enterprise -B.

The memory starts out with Kirk running a holo simulation trial for Starfleet Technicians in the Cochrane Physics Hall of Starfleet Academy. The simulation was of one of Kirk's earlier missions dating back to when he was a Lieutenant on the Farragut . Beamed down to Tycho IV, Lt. Kirk and the away team including Androvar Drake, Weapons officer Faith Morgan and Ensign Galt are being hunted by a Dikironium cloud creature that feeds off of the corpuscles of iron-based blood until its victims have died. So far Faith Morgan and Ensign Galt have both died leaving only Drake and Kirk on the surface. On the Farragut , Captain Garrovick orders Kirk to provide the coordinates for a phaser barrage to take out the being. Providing the coordinates to his captain, the Farragut fires her phasers at the beast. Attracting the attention of the beast, it goes into orbit and destroys the ship before coming back down to finish of the away team.

excerpt: Drake laughed beside Kirk. "Great instincts, Jimbo. See you in Hell"

With that, Jim ends the holo simulation and returns to the real world. While speakings with the Techs about the HoloSuit he wore for the simulation, the Techs question Kirk on his exploits and refer to Kirk as a hero. Jim states that he was just doing his job, but the techs don't understand the statement and continue with their hero worship. More than anything Kirk is annoyed with the hero worship but humors them up to a point. He feels frustrated, a "Starship Captain without a Starship" as well as trapped with nowhere to go.

Later on in the evening, Kirk is at Carol Marcus's place in San Francisco drinking scotch and watching a thundershower. He feels the pull of the Enterprise -A up in Spacedock, The need to take her out one more time. More than anything Jim is feeling his age, and the need to do something, anything. Again Kirk begins to feel his age, he feels old. Carol approaches and questions him on the Kirk Farm, they place where Jim grew up. Advocates handling his parents estate wanted him to make the final decision, as to what he should do with the property. In the end, he and Carol get into an argument and Jim returns to drinking and watching the thundershower.

During this time, Chekov and Uhura are on a old space station: Dark Range Platform. Chekov and Uhura's mission is to find Klingon arms dealers who are willing to sell K'tinga -class cruisers. The Two pose as two ex-Starfleet officers, Chekov being the one who was drummed out of Starfleet by punching an Admiral in the face.

In 79 television episodes of Star Trek and six feature films, they grew to know each other more than most friends could ever imagine. Over the course of half a century, Shatner and Nimoy saw each other through personal and professional highs and lows.

Shatner brings to life an amazing tale about a talented, hardworking man!

Long before Gene Roddenberry put him on a starship to explore the galaxy, long before he actually did venture to space, William Shatner was gripped by his own quest for knowledge and meaning. Though his eventful life has been nothing short of extraordinary, Shatner is still never so thrilled as when he experiences something that inspires him to simply say, “Wow.” Within these affecting, entertaining, and informative essays, he demonstrates that astonishing possibilities and true wonder are all around us.

A very personal reflection of William Shatner at this moment in time.

The Devil's Heart is a legendary object of unsurpassed power and mystery. Worlds that believe in magic consider it Darkness's mightiest talisman; and worlds of science consider it a lost artifact of some ancient and forgotten race. Some say the Heart enables its possessor to control people's minds and to amass wealth enough for a dozen lifetimes, while others think it capable of raising the dead, perhaps even changing the flow of time itself. But to all, the location of this fabled object has remained a mystery, until now.

Not a bad Star Trek story....

But not a great one either. My issue with this (and it is mostly one of personal taste)is that it is very character-centric, specifically the Kirk Character, which I find a bit tiring. While the plot progresses nicely, it still seems a little heavy on the examination of inner workings of this "great hero", and tends to trump the story a bit. However, as I said, this is mainly my personal taste. It's a good story though, especially if you are a ST fan

This is a great dramatization. The sound effects are superb! Chekov's Russian accent was a little of, but it did not detract from the enjoyment of this mini audiodrama.

Star Trek at it's Best!

having been a fan of Star Trek since it began so many years ago, this story captures the essence of what Star Trek is all about!. Having it read by William Shatner and hearing his voice again, takes it to the next level. Highly recommend this book! The audio version is tremendous with special effects and storyline, I have listened to it several times.

An Interesting ST Story

This story by Shatner is interesting mainly because if takes place in STOS time and fits in well with the TV show. The story plays out like many ST novels and works well with Shatner's reading. As a fan of STOS novels I have been wanting to read Shatner's work for a while, and this book did not disappoint me.

The ashes of eden.

For almost three decades, millions of television viewers and moviegoers around the world have thrilled to the exciting adventures of the most successful science fiction creation of all time—Star Trek. And during all that time, William Shatner has portrayed Star Trek' s most dynamic hero—Captain James Tiberius Kirk, a gallant commander of the legendary starship Enterprise and her crew.
Now William Shatner brings his unique blend of talents as an actor, writer, director, and producer, as well as bestselling author and creator of the acclaimed TekWar novels and television series, to tell the story only he can, of Captain Kirk's greatest adventure.
The time—six months prior to the launch of the USS Enterprise-B and the tragic loss of Captain James T. Kirk in deep space.
The place—Earth, where the galaxy's most renowned hero must now face the spectre of retirement and a life devoid of challenge and excitement.
But in the apparent twilight of his career, Kirk's path takes an unexpected turn when a mysterious young woman offers him an irresistible adventure—a perilous voyage to an uncharted planet where he will confront the ultimate threat to the fragile peace between the Federation and the Klingon Empire, and the ultimate temptation—a chance to actually recapture his youth.
Turning his back on his friends, Spock and McCoy, and hunted by Captain Sulu's USS Excelsior , Kirk soon stands alone as defender of a world of incredible vitality and sensual beauty where he must choose between conquering the gravest challenge of his career, or surrendering to the greatest passion of his life.
What arises from The Ashes of Eden is no less that a new understanding of one of science fiction's greatest heroes, and one of the most gripping—and personal— Star Trek stories ever told.

Very good review. I also enjoyed the podcast review. The other reviewer's enthusiasm for the book convinced me to check it out. The first 90% of the book is excellent. I do wish there had been more time exploring Chekov's anger toward Sulu. I understand why he initially lashed out but found his holding a grudge harder to believe. Where the novel goes off the rails, imo, is in the last few chapters. I have absolutely no idea what Drake's plan was. He wanted a Doomsday weapon to reignite hostilities betwen the Federation and the Klingons - I get that. He also hated Kirk -I get that. But why the heck did he give Kirk the Enterprise AND involve all of Kirk's closest allies in his plot? It's more than hubris, it's nonsensical. And what was he up to on Chal? He didn't know the planet's location, but he knew how to send out invites to his party to the colony's leader? Once he knows it's a lightly defended planet ,why the heck didn't he just use mercenaries or SI to get the dope on what was in the Armoury? And how is it possible that the second generation of hybrids didn't know there origins when all of their parents did? Would Romulans and Klingons ever join forces in this way? I'm skeptical. And since when can you go to warp inside a planet's atmosphere? Rating: First 90% of book = 5 Elasian tears Last 10% = 1 moldy packet of powdered Mugato horn Kirk picked up on Neural 30 years ago. An average 3 23rd century aphrodisiacs out of 5.
