Why You Shouldn’t Point Your Smartphone Camera Directly at the Sun During Today's Solar Eclipse, According to NASA
And what to do instead.
LeoPatrizi/Getty Images
It’s eclipse day, and while you may want to take photos of the rare phenomenon, NASA warns it could actually damage your smartphone camera.
Ahead of the eclipse happening on Monday, the agency warned on X that the bright sun could damage the phone sensor, just like any other camera when pointed directly at the sun
“This is especially true if you’re using any sort of magnifying lens attachment on the phone. You would need to utilize the proper filters just like on any other camera,” NASA wrote in its post. “The best practice would be to hold a pair of eclipse glasses in front of your phone’s lenses when photographing the Sun at any point other than totality.”
The total solar eclipse , which has been dubbed the Great American Eclipse, is expected to cross the country from Texas and go all the way to Maine, starting near Eagle Pass, Texas, at about 1:30 p.m. CT. The eclipse is an especially big deal since the next total solar eclipse won't be visible from the contiguous U.S. until 2044, according to NASA .
For those who do want to capture the phenomenon on film (or camera roll), NASA does have a few tips to save your lens.
First, use a filter. A filter for your camera is just as important as wearing good solar eclipse glasses to protect your eyes — and NASA said you can even hold those same glasses up to the camera to capture photos. But if you’re in the path of totality, remember to remove the filter when there is 100 percent coverage “so you can see the Sun’s outer atmosphere – the corona.”
Second, remember there’s more to photographing a solar eclipse than the actual sun.
“The real pictures are going to be of the people around you pointing, gawking, and watching it,” NASA photographer Bill Ingalls said in a statement. “Those are going to be some great moments to capture to show the emotion of the whole thing.”
Lastly, remember any camera can be a good camera, but there are certain pieces of equipment that can help like a tripod to steady your shots (especially in low lighting).

I'm not going through the details. I just want it known that Lenore ( if I remember her name correctly) was completely rude from start to finish. I don't like leaving bad reviews but I can't shake this one off. The agent across from me was all smiles and respectful to her clients. I got the complete bitter opposite. I simply got the wrong agent.

We appreciate your feedback, Dennis and apologize that you felt you were treated with disrespect. After speaking with Lenore, we are unsure of when you were in the office. I would appreciate you contacting me at [email protected] with more details (the day you visited, what destination you were interested in, etc.), so that your comments can be addressed. Thank you!
DO NOT book any travel with this agency. My family and I booked a trip last year with them and encountered nothing but problems. They booked a hotel almost an hour away from our vacation spot. We attempted to switch our hotels but received no assistance from them nor from the onsite agency that is partnered with them. We asked for assistance with the reimbursement from the first hotel and for assistance with getting the second hotel at the agency rate, but no help. This issue has gone for months now. It will be easier if you book travel on your own or trust another agency. If you do end up going with this agency make sure every single piece of communication is in writing, because they will twist things if you don't have any.

Hi, Ed - In looking through our database, I can only find one trip booked between August of 2016 and February of 2018 by someone whose names begins with Ed and whose last name begins with a C...but it doesn't fit the kind of trip you are describing at all. We would certainly like to get more information from you, even though we are just seeing this post now. We see every complaint as a learning opportunity to improve our services - and it sounds like we had some improving to do with your travel plans. Please feel free to reach out to us at [email protected] with more information. We look forward to hearing from you!
So despite the reviews I decided to try. The agent was not very helpful nor knowledgable. I let her know what I was looking for and her answers were, I don't know instead of let me research that. I called a travel agent because I thought they would have some insight. Disappointed.
Ann Sparks & Liz Deaner are the absolute best !!! Liz is great, organized and professional. Worked with her at UTEP and she made every trip extremely easy. Ann just did our honeymoon in Moorea and Bora Bora and everything was top class. So easy and smooth! Best trip of our life and couldn't be more thankful for Sun Travel
Wow, Keith! That's some high praise - thank you!
I have had Maria Maldonado of Sun Travel on Mesa set up several European trips for me and just recently a Hawaiian trip. Every trip I've been on has just been wonderful. Everything ran so smooth with no problems. Maria organized everything perfectly. I highly recommend her for future travel.
Thank you for your kind words, Judy! We agree that Maria does a great job!

US eclipse travelers met with sky-high prices – and reservation snafus
Travel agency rearranged lodging for dozens of people after two-year-old bookings were canceled – and resold at higher rates
- If you missed the total solar eclipse just wait … until 2044
- Total solar eclipse over Mexico, US and Canada – in pictures
Hotel rates in states in the path of the solar eclipse on Monday have surged to astronomical prices, with some eclipse watchers traveling from across the country to find their reservations canceled and sold for several times the original price.
Millions of Americans are expected to travel to witness one of the most spectacular celestial events in recent memory, with the moon’s path of totality set to sweep across 15 states, along with parts of Mexico and Canada, bringing with it more than a billion dollars for local economies.
Those looking to book accommodation in the center path of the “ great American eclipse ” have seen rates soar and hotels sold out, with analysis from the New York Times showing one hotel in Grayville, Illinois, advertising rooms for nearly 10 times their usual nightly rate.
In Buffalo, New York, where as many as a million visitors are expected to flock for a prime viewing spot during the eclipse, hotel and flight bookings were up four times from a similar time period last year, according to analysis by Chase Travel.
Amid the clamor for accommodation, one travel agency said it had been forced to rearrange lodging for more than 150 people after bookings made two years earlier at two Buffalo hotels were canceled. Rooms that had cost $129 to $159 were canceled and resold at $450 or more, according to Sugar Tours, owner, Chris Donnelly, who said it was “total price gouging”.
“Of course this was all about the profits,” Donnelly said. “I have a feeling that they never even entered our rooms into the system and just sold them and waited until 30 days prior to let us know. Thirty years in the business, have never had this happen.”
Manga Hotel Group, who owns the Aloft Buffalo Airport and Hampton Inn & Suites Buffalo Airport, said the cancellations of the rooms had been due to a mistake with overbooking. No canceled rooms were resold as new reservations, it said.
The region’s tourism bureau, Visit Buffalo Niagara (VBN), said it worked with the individuals who had received cancellation notices and that it “does not condone this business practice of canceling room bookings”.
“We find it shameful that longtime customers and new visitors are being treated this way,” Patrick Kaler, president and CEO of VBN, said. “Putting greed before the visitor’s experience and the destination’s reputation is unacceptable.”

The one thing you'll want to do is the only thing not to do while driving during solar eclipse
The 2024 solar eclipse will shroud much of the United States in darkness on Monday, leaving many people to wonder: Is it safe to drive during the celestial event?
We know Americans should wear certified eclipse glasses when looking directly at the eclipse. And millions of Americans are in the eclipse's path of totality , the moment that occurs when the moon completely blocks the sun's light from reaching us. During totality, the eclipse can be viewed with the naked eye.
The eclipse will begin in Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT and end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. EDT, but the exact time of the eclipse varies by where you are in its path. If you plan to drive during this time, you may not only have to contend with traffic , but need to take steps to stay safe.
Here's what to know about driving during the eclipse.
Where to get free solar eclipse glasses: Libraries, Warby Parker and more giving glasses away
Is it safe to drive during an eclipse?
It's safe to drive during an eclipse as long as you don't look up at the sky. AAA is telling drivers to be focused on the road if they are operating a car during the total solar eclipse.
"Anyone operating a vehicle should not be attempting to look up at the sky during the eclipse – their eyes should be on the road," said Aixa Diaz, a spokeswoman from AAA.
The automobile insurance company is advising Americans who want to safely view the total eclipse to "find a safe place to park (not on the side of a road or highway) away from other traffic and then wear your eclipse glasses," Diaz said.
Do not wear eclipse glasses while driving
It should go without saying, but authorities are also reminding people to not drive while wearing eclipse glasses .
The Missouri and Texas departments of transportation are both advising drivers to not wear eclipse glasses during the natural phenomenon and to focus on the road.
"Do not wear eclipse glasses while driving," reads a list of safety tips from the Texas department. Thousands people are expected to drive to towns along the path of totality, including Dallas, ahead of the eclipse.
Several state transportation departments released similar warnings ahead of the 2017 total solar eclipse. Wyoming's, for example, warned people traveling to the state about how they wouldn't be able to see the road with solar eclipse glasses on.
"When the glasses are worn, a person shouldn’t be able to see anything except the solar eclipse, which is why it is unsafe for a person to wear them when driving," the warning reads.
"Eclipse glasses are for eclipse viewing, not driving. They shouldn’t be treated like normal sunglasses," Diaz said.

Subscriber only, travel | 8 new ships coming to norwegian cruise line, sister brands plus dock at great stirrup cay.
The parent company to Norwegian Cruise Line announced Monday a major order for eight new ships among its three brands as well as the construction of a pier to allow its cruise ships to dock instead of tender to its private Bahamas island for the first time.
Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings said it was planning to bring on four new ships for NCL, two new ships for upper premium brand Oceania Cruises and two ships for luxury brand Regent Seven Seas, all to be built at Fincantieri shipyard in Italy and debut during a 10-year run from 2026-2036.
The NCL ships would be the largest ever built for the line at around 200,000 gross tons and capacity of about 5,000 guests. They won’t arrive until after the final delivery of its Prima-Plus class ships expected between 2025-2028, the larger sister ships to the Norwegian Prima and Viva that debuted in the last couple of years. The four ships from the unnamed class of vessel would arrive in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036.
The new class for Oceania Cruises, which in 2023 debuted its first new ship in more than a decade — the Oceania Allura — will also be the largest ever built for the line at 86,000 gross tons and a capacity of 1,450 guests. They’re expected in 2027 and 2029.
And the Regent Seven Seas fleet’s new vessels will also be larger coming in at 77,000 gross tons with a capacity of 850 guests. They’re expected in 2026 and 2029. Regent just debuted the third of its Explorer class ships in December 2023.
“This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth,” said NCLH president and CEO Harry Sommer in a press release. “It also allows us to significantly leverage our operating scale, strengthen our commitment to innovation and enhance our ability to offer our guests new products and experiences, all while providing opportunities to enhance the efficiency of our fleet.”
No other details about the ships were released. Financing is already in place to fund 80% of the cost for the four ships among the Oceania and Regent orders, but financing for the four NCL ships is not finalized.
The eight ships expects to add 25,000 more to the three cruise lines’ passenger capacity.
In addition, the line is set to construct a multi-ship pier at Great Stirrup Cay, the popular Bahamas private destination visited by all three brands. The move follows the introduction of a dock that can support two Oasis-class vessels at neighboring Perfect Day at Coco Cay for Royal Caribbean while other private Bahamas destinations including Disney’s Castaway Cay and its new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point feature tenderless docks for easy access.
“We are likewise excited with the addition of a new pier at Great Stirrup Cay to support our increased capacity in the Caribbean and multiple ships to call on the island, enhancing our guest experience and bringing seamless and reliable access to our private island year-round,” Sommer said.

Heavy traffic fails to cast shadow over eclipse travel experience: ‘It was 100% worth the trip’
A few hours after the total eclipse brought thousands of spectators to downstate illinois, traffic remained heavy on some interstates..

After viewing the spectacle that was a total solar eclipse in southern Illinois, some travelers were met with a less-incredible sight — bumper-to-bumper traffic.
The Illinois Department of Transportation estimated crowds of 100,000 to 200,000 would descend on prime viewing areas downstate ahead of the event , and told those making the trek to expect congestion.
A few hours after the eclipse reached totality in southern Illinois on Monday, IDOT said traffic remained heavy “in pockets along the length of I-57 northbound, north of Marion to Champaign, I-64 westbound west of Mt. Vernon to the Metro East St. Louis area, and all of I-24.”
Traffic is moving out post-eclipse, but slowly, with reports of crashes on some heavily traveled routes. Tom Purdy, 42, headed from his home in Janesville, Wisconsin, to Mount Vernon in southern Illinois.
He said the worst traffic heading home was south of Effingham, but overall he expected the traffic to only tack on an additional half an hour to the usual five-hour drive.
"It was 100% worth the trip," Purdy said.
He said he missed the total eclipse in 2017; he decided he would make the trip this year "one way or another," ending up in a park in Mount Vernon with a few hundred other spectators.
He said he'll be in his 60s when the next total eclipse graces North America in 2044, but he expects to make the trip again.
Jason Wright from Atlanta, Georgia, took a detour with his family to Marion on their road trip back home from a trip to St. Louis.
The trip from Marion to Atlanta was expected to take nine to 10 hours, but after a 50-mile stretch that took him three hours to get through, Wright expected the trip to take closer to 12 hours.
Despite the traffic, Wright said the experience was "spectacular."
"I don't have any regrets at this point, I'm glad we did it," Wright said. "Now, ask me at 1 o'clock this morning when I'm still an hour from home, I may think differently."
Chicago saw a partial solar eclipse, peaking at 2:07 p.m. with 94% coverage.
Chicago's Office of Emergency Management and Communications encouraged spectators to take public transportation to viewing events around the city.
