  • 2 Get around

Teknaf Upazila is the southern-most city on the mainland in Bangladesh , on the narrow strip running along the coast of Myanmar . It's a dusty featureless frontier town - this is remote Bangladesh and it feels like it. Electricity can be scarce, so having a flashlight for the dark evenings is wise.

Get in [ edit ]

teknaf tourist spot

  • Buses running from Cox's Bazar (Tk 70-120, 2 hours) are crowded and pass through nice scenery as you get closer to Teknaf. If you're trying to head straight to Saint Martins Island and don't want to stay the night in Teknaf, try for a 6AM bus from Cox's Bazar and specify which ferry port you want to get off at - you may make it.

You can take a bus straight from Dhaka to Teknaf. Saudia: Leave at 8.30PM daily (to Dhaka 6:30PM) S. ALAM: leaves Dhaka daily at 10:30PM (to Dhaka 6:15PM)

  • The main ferry port is about 5 km north of town on the road to Cox's Bazar . Eagle I leaves here at around 10AM daily.
  • Keari Sindbad (+8801727 266077) has its own port about 3 km further north from the main port on the same road. Their service is a little more reliable and costs about the same. The ferry leaves at 9:30AM daily (during peak season, or Thursday & Friday only during off peak season), then leaves Saint Martins Island around 3:00PM. Roundtrip tickets to Saint Martins Island run Tk 650 for main deck, 700 for open deck and 750 for bridge deck.

Get around [ edit ]

Auto-rickshaws (babytaxis) can be found near the bus stop. To the main ferry port should costs Tk 50 and to Keari Sindbad's port Tk 70. Cycle-rickshaws may be cheaper but the road north can be steep and you'll end up walking a good deal of the way. The Bangla word for port is "Bondor".

See [ edit ]

teknaf tourist spot

  • Take a walk over the bridge, passing the river filled with colorful fishing boats, makeshift houses filled with curious children, and beautiful farmland looking out towards Myanmar, dotted with patrolling soldiers.
  • Teknaf beach is a large beach about 5km west of the center of town, very popular with locals at sunset. It's much quieter than Cox's Bazar , though the 50+ motorcyclists racing back and forth along the shoreline won't help you to relax, nor will all your new friends. There's a small snack shack where the road meets the beach.

Do [ edit ]

Buy [ edit ].

There's a market down the road behind the bus stop and over the bridge in which can be found goods smuggled from Myanmar, possibly even beer.

Eat [ edit ]

There's a largish restaurant tucked behind the bus stop that serves decent food at decent prices, and several more similar restaurants along the road behind the bus stand en route to the bridge. None are signed in English.

Drink [ edit ]

Inquire at your hotel or at one of the local restaurants and you may be able to score some beer from Myanmar.

Sleep [ edit ]

It's likely that you'll have to spend a night here en route to Saint Martins Island, since the ferries leave so early.

  • Sky View Hotel , across from the bus stop . It's dark and musty, but probably the best budget option. Double rooms are Tk 150, but possible to bargain to Tk 100 .
  • Hotel Raj Mahal , north of the bus stand on east side of street . Tk 80-150 .
  • Hotel Hilltop , north of the bus stand on west side of street . Another cheap option, it's tucked back off the street a little so might be quieter than some others. Tk 100-200 .
  • Hotel Dip Plaza , a little south of Sky View . A little larger, cleaner and more expensive than Sky View. doubles from Tk 400 .
  • Hotel Ne-Taung , across the road from Keari Sindbad port , ☏ +880 1911 346427 . This government owned hotel is the nicest in the town, and it's right near the Keari Sindbad port, so handy if you're not interested in staying in the town itself. It's also got a decent restaurant. Tk 1400-3500 .

teknaf tourist spot

Teknaf Wildlife Sanctuary

This rarely visited wildlife reserve is home to some of the country’s few remaining wild elephants. Your chances of seeing one of them are slim (the best chance is in the evening), but hiking into the hilly forest is an adventure in itself. The Nishorgo Network (www.nishorgo.org) keeps a list of local guides, although few speak English. The trails, though, are marked on wooden signboards (albeit in Bengali only), so it’s reasonably easy to find your way around.

The chances are you’ll be the only tourist walking the forest trails, although you may bump into local villagers as they venture into the hills to collect firewood. Deforestation caused by a growing but poor population has meant that the area has lost 90% of its forest cover in the last four decades.

Technically there’s an Interpretation Centre by the entrance and some basic accommodation, but both were shut when we visited.

Teknaf is the southern-most city of the mainland Bangladesh, it is a border town that lies in between Myanmar and beautiful sandy beaches by the Bay of Bengal. The famous Naf river is dividing the country from Myanmar. I have taken a flight from the capital city Dhaka to the resort city called Cox’s Bazar and from there a bus to Teknaf.

Regent Airways, Bangladesh

Helpful Information

Winter – The best time to visit Teknaf is between October – February when the weather is dry and cool, the sea is calm and the beaches are not so crowded. During this period, the day temperature is not so high, so it’s comfortable for day activities. This is the high tourist season so expect crowded beaches and sold out accommodations.

Summer  – It is too hot and humid in Southernmost part of the country, and the sea is rough due to frequent storms and rain. Therefore boat trips and day trip to the nearby island like St. Martin’s Island is closed to visitors between Many and August.

There are several ways to get to Teknaf from Dhaka/Chittagong/Cox’s Bazar.

By Bus to Tekanf from Dhaka

There are many bus services from Dhaka Saydabad & Fakirapul that goes to Teknaf. Most of the overnight bus arrives Teknaf early morning to make it a smooth transfer to the 9:00 AM Ferry for the St. Martin’s Island trippers. Get off at Teknaf port.  Or you can take a bus to Cox’s Bazar stay overnight. Enjoy the famous beach town, and then continue your trip towards Tekanf by Microbus or public bus.

From Dhaka by Air to Cox’s Bazar then by Road to Teknaf

There are daily flights available from Dhaka to Cox’s Bazar, and the flight time is about 65 minutes. From Cox’s Bazar airport, hire a Car or microbus with a driver to get to Teknaf Ferry Terminal.

Public buses are starting at 6:00 AM onwards from Cox’s bazar Bus Terminal to Teknaf. It’s important to know that for St. Martin’s Island travelers you need to get on one of these buses before 7:00 AM to catch the 9:00 AM ship from Teknaf to St. Martin. The bus will drop you off right at the Teknaf Ferry Port.

It’s a small border city walkable to most of the city areas of interest. Get a CNG or taxi to explore a few of the near by beaches. There are three wheels cycle-rickshaws are available all over the town.

Teknaf is a small border town that can be explored in a day if you plan not to spend overnight here in the town. But I highly recommend staying overnight. There are a handful of hotels in this town. So, I recommend one night stay in Teknaf.

Here Are Some Tips

  • Keep plenty of Cash you many not have access to ATM or Money Exchange at all the places.
  • If you are getting off at Teknaf port. Don’t forget to tell the bus staff ahead to let you down at the Teknaf Port Jetty from where all the ships leave.

Road Trip to Teknaf

There are public buses from Cox’s Bazar to Teknaf. The highway may surprise you but the road trip was definitely a great experience on those bumpy highways.

Bangladesh Highway

Visiting the Teknaf Beach

From Teknaf town center you can take an auto rickshaw (it is often called CNG as it is run by Compressed Natural Gas) to one of the near by beaches. If you walk on the beautiful beach you will definitely enjoy not only the beautiful scene but also come across local fishermen activities such as salting and drying fishes in the Sun called shutki and very popular in Bangladesh.

Day Trip From Teknaf

I did not have enough time during this trip to explore St Martin’s Island but it’s a must-go island if someone is in and around Teknaf. Even the 3 hours ship journey from Teknaf to the island is an interesting one.

It is definitely possible to explore and enjoy the things it has to offer as part of a day trip from Teknaf. Walk around and see the local fishermen village, have some seafood, soak up in one of it’s beautiful sandy beaches in a day since the island is only about 8 sq km, and shrinks to about 5 sq km.

On the other hand, if you are visiting Cox’s Bazar and having not enough time for the overnight stay in Teknaf, then exactly what I did during my recent 3 days trip to  St Martin’s Island .

Day Trip from Teknaf

Sightseeing in Teknaf

The border town of Teknaf is located by the Naf river with beautiful rolling mountains with green forests in the backdrop. On the western side of the river is Bangladesh, and on the east is Myanmar. The famous river, filled with colorful fishing boats, makeshift houses filled with curious children, and beautiful farmland looking out towards Myanmar, and the scene are breathtaking. One of the most exciting things you could do during your trip to Teknaf takes a boat ride on the river.

Visit Teknaf Burmese Market

The Teknaf Burmese market is a good place for shopping located right behind the bus station. As a frontier town, its easy to find traditional Burmese clothing, saviors, items made from seashells, pearl jewelry, and much more.

Bongo Bazar, Dhaka

I still regret that I did not carry a good camera to capture some of the unforgettable moments, so I did not scratch it off from my to-do list as I plan to visit this beautiful place once again.

Known primarily for its unparalleled stretch of sandy shores, Cox’s Bazar boasts the longest sea beach in the world. There are different popular Places to visit in Cox’s Bazar, offering a treasure trove of experiences for travelers to explore.

Visitors can immerse themselves in the spiritual tranquility of the Himchari National Park, where verdant hills. For history enthusiasts, the ancient temples of Maheshkhali Island offer a glimpse into the region’s rich heritage. Whether relishing the serene beauty of Inani Beach, marveling at the panoramic vistas from Himchari National Park, or engaging with the vibrant local life, Cox’s Bazar promises an unforgettable journey.

Top 9 Places to Visit in Cox’s Bazar

Cox’s Bazar, a coastal gem in Bangladesh, entices travelers with the world’s longest sea beach. Beyond its sandy shores, explore Himchari National Park’s lush tranquility, delve into Maheshkhali Island’s historic temples, and relish Inani Beach’s beauty. Cox’s Bazar offers a rich blend of natural wonders and cultural marvels. Let’s explore some of the best Places to Visit in Cox’s Bazar:

Cox’s Bazar Beach

Cox’s Bazar Beach is an internationally recognized tourist hotspot, just a few kilometers from the town. Cox’s Bazar is the world’s longest ocean beach, and this fact makes it popular among those outside of Bangladesh. It is referred to be Bangladesh’s travel hub and features a 120-kilometer-long, gently sloping sandy ocean shore.

Because of its stunning natural beauty, this Tourist Spot in Cox’s Bazar draws travelers from all over the world all year long. Cox’s Bazar Sea Beach provides visitors with an outstanding experience being both the largest beach in the planet and the most well-liked tourist attraction in Bangladesh. It’s the ideal spot to unwind with its breathtaking vistas, inviting beach, and cooling waves.

Inani Beach

Inani Beach is 25 kilometers from Cox’s Bazar’s main town, and the entire beach is approximately 18 kilometers long. This breathtaking view is easily accessible in around 30 to 40 minutes using only a car, CNG, and a Jeep. The beach is covered in tons of coral stones, which are almost exclusively found in a black-and-green combination of colors. We advise caution because these stones are exceedingly sharp.

People prefer swimming and bathing at Inani Beach since the water there is much cleaner than the water at the nearby beaches in Cox’s Bazar. Furthermore, the view of the sunset from Inani Beach is breathtaking; we advise bringing a camera to record some of the priceless unspoiled moments.

Himchori

Himchori is a popular Cox Bazar tourist spot located 12 kilometers south of Cox’s Bazar seashore. This is a famous tourist destination in Cox’s Bazar for those who want less congested regions and more natural quiet. Himchori provides a variety of places for you to visit. A smaller beach nearby is less crowded than Cox’s Bazar.

There is also a lovely spring named Himchori Spring, with cool waters running through the hills. You will be fantastic at Himchori’s Cox’s Bazar tourist attractions. A bath in clean water would be a welcome bonus! The Himchori ecological park and a waterfall are among the popular attractions. The eco-park has an entrance price but will provide you with an unforgettable experience.

Maheshkhali Island

Nestled within Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, Maheshkhali Island stands out as a premier destination. Its proximity to the mainland doesn’t diminish its allure; rather, it amplifies its appeal to nature enthusiasts. The island is a sanctuary of natural wonders, bedecked with verdant hills, tranquil beaches, and enchanting vistas. A feast for the eyes, the island’s elevated points offer breathtaking panoramas of the Bay of Bengal.

Enveloped by dense mangrove forests, Maheshkhali Island emerges as a haven for ornithologists and those intrigued by local biodiversity. The exploration of indigenous flora and fauna becomes an adventure unto itself. Beyond its natural charm, Maheshkhali Island radiates with spiritual significance. This Tourist Spot in Cox’s Bazar houses a collection of temples, with the Adinath Temple reigning as the most renowned among them. Additionally, the ancient Ramu Monastery, a Buddhist treasure, beckons travelers and further enriches the island’s tapestry of attractions.

Sonadia Island

Sonadia Island is one of the most famous Places to visit in Cox’s Bazar, despite its modest size of about 9 square kilometers. It is located 15 kilometers northwest of Cox Bazar. The natural atmosphere and richness of this place remain untouched. This is why this area has many different creatures and plants.

The population of this little, picturesque island is roughly 2000 people. The island is separated into two sections: east and west. In comparison, the Westside is more appealing as a tourist destination. On this island, you will feel a sense of oneness with nature. Visitors who prefer a more natural setting will love their stay. Sonadia island may be reached through Moheshkhali from Cox’s Bazar’s 6th port.

Marine Drive Road

One of Bangladesh’s most stunning routes is Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf Marine Drive . It is a well-liked tourist site and renowned for its breathtaking scenery and vistas. The route connects Cox’s Bazar with Teknaf and is around 80 kilometers long. It is a road that many people use daily and is quite popular with visitors.

Numerous locals who reside in the neighborhood also utilize the route. Along the route, there are a lot of hotels and guest homes. Numerous individuals who work in the tourist sector also travel on this road. The region’s economy heavily depends on the road.

Laboni Beach

One of the most popular destinations in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar is Laboni Beach. It is the longest beautiful sandy sea beach in the world, measuring more than 120 kilometers of immaculate sand. Visitors get the chance to unwind, enjoy the sun, and take in the spectacular views of the Bay of Bengal at Laboni Beach.

This Tourist Spot in Cox’s Bazar is renowned for its calm waves and luxurious golden sand, which make it ideal for swimming and tanning. Long walks down the beach allow visitors to enjoy the fresh wind and the crashing sound of the waves slamming on the shore. Jet skiing, surfing, as well as banana boat excursions are some of the recreational options available to visitors.

Acuaholic Tourist Caravan

In this road, a brand-new open-roof tourist bus has been operating since 2020. Along the 80-kilometer-long Marine Drive route, tourists now have the chance to view the picturesque shoreline and mountainous regions. This bus left Cox’s Bazar’s Kalatoli point every morning at precisely nine. The Teknaf Peninsula is where we are going.

The day-long package includes a stay in Teknaf’s lovely Sabrang tourist park. The open roof, large windows, plush chairs, and library of travel-related publications are all features of this two-story decked tourist caravan. On one side, visitors may see mountains and fountains, while on the other, a turquoise sea with red crabs racing on a ledge in this Cox’s Bazar visiting place.

Kana Raja’s Cave

Kana Rajar guha is a further feature of a visit to Cox Bazar. Anyone may dive into the pothole’s 70-foot depth, which is at least 350 feet deep. According to a legend, this cave was built by a blind Marma King some 400 years ago for his private use. This area, which is 25 kilometers from Laboni Point on the Cox’s Bazar seashore, has been neglected for a very long time.

The authorities have been aware of this beautiful site for the past two or three years. There is an artwork on the wall of this cave. After 70 feet, the cave that Kana Raja created can become highly unstable and provide its own set of difficulties for spelunkers. The last portion of the cave is inaccessible by foot. Consequently, dragging the body across the ground while crawling.

In conclusion, Cox’s Bazar presents an alluring tapestry of experiences that cater to a diverse range of interests. From the endless stretch of its renowned sea beach to the serene landscapes of Himchari National Park and the cultural treasures found within Maheshkhali Island’s ancient temples.

The Places to Visit in Cox’s Bazar encapsulates the essence of both natural beauty and historical significance. Whether seeking relaxation on sandy shores or a journey through local heritage, Cox’s Bazar promises an enriching adventure that lingers in the hearts of all who are fortunate enough to explore its captivating offerings.

Mathiner Kup (মাথিনের কূপ) is a historical and interesting tourist spot. It is a reminder of immortal love. Apart from the coral island of St. Martin , this tourist spot in Teknaf still captivates people. The story of Mathiner Kup grows the curiosity and interest of any traveler from home and abroad. It is a strange love story between Mathin, the Mugh daughter of the Rakhine community , and Dhiraj Bhattacharya, once a popular actor & Police Officer. This Mathiner Kup is inside Teknaf police station near Naf river .

The love story of Dheeraj-Mathin is no less emotional than the love of Yusuf-Zulekha, Shahjahan-Mumtaz, Shiri-Farhad or Laili-Majnoor. Hundreds of years ago, police officer Dhiraj Bhattacharya and Rakhine zamindar’s beautiful daughter Mathin co-wrote an immortal love epic.

The well of Mathin

The daughter of a Rakhine Zamindar fell in love with a police officer. The police officer was also in love with her. However, he did not get the taste of the fullness of love. The love of the lover lost to the family. In it, the lover made an eternal companion. The boyfriend was defeated under pressure, but the girlfriend was not defeated. Rather, he sacrificed herself to love. That separation is immortal and the story is spreading from generation to generation.

Mathiner Kup (মাথিনের কূপ)

By the end of the eighteenth century, Teknaf was in dire need of potable water. There was only one fresh water well in the police station premises which is the only one in the whole of Teknaf. Every day Rakhine young women used to come to fetch water from the well.

Dhiraj Bhattacharya was transferred here from Calcutta . Mathin, the daughter of a Rakhine zamindar, used to come with other Rakhine girls to fetch water. In this way, Mathin’s love affair with Dhiraj started. The two also decided to get married. But suddenly a letter from Calcutta informs Dhiraj that his father is seriously ill.

As a result, Dhiraj prepared to return to Calcutta. But Mathin did not agree. Her idea was that once the foreigner left, he would never return. So Dhiraj left for Calcutta without informing Mathin. Mathin suffered a lot and gave up eating and drinking. In no way could she be understood. At one point, Mathin fell to his death.

World News | Taliban hopes to make Afghanistan a tourism hotspot

The Taliban hopes to remedy Afghanistan’s many woes by making the highly conservative, poverty-stricken, war-torn country a tourism destination.

Would-be bookers understand they have their work cut out for them.

Visas are hard to procure. The Taliban’s treatment of women is famously abhorrent. None of the the country’s airports have direct flights to Europe, India or China, which the Tourism Directorate in Kabul hopes to make a large market. There’s also an absence of foreign embassies.

But there’s reason for guarded optimism.

In 2021, only 691 foreign tourists visited Afghanistan. The Taliban took control of the Middle East nation in September of that year when U.S. troops withdrew after 20 years of war. The following year, the number of foreign tourists more than tripled to 2,300. That number skyrocketed to 7,000 visitors in 2023.

“They hear that Afghanistan is backwards, poverty and all about war,” business school graduate and aspiring hotelier Samir Ahmadzai told The Associated Press.

He was one of 30 men who recently attended a Taliban-run class in Kabul that trains tourism and hospitality professionals.

“We have 5,000 years of history,” Ahmadzai said. “There should be a new page of Afghanistan.”

No women attended that class with Ahmadzai. The Taliban forbids females from studying past the sixth grade. The strict Islamic leadership also has a dress code for women and requires they travel with a male guardian. Only men go to gyms.

However, the Kabul Serena Hotel — Afghanistan’s sole five-star hotel — recently reopened a women’s spa and salon that’s accessible to foreign females. Its website also advertises a poolside bar and a pastry shop.

According to the Associated Press, aspiring tourism officials quietly contemplate how men in Afghanistan might engage publicly with foreign women in a fashion the Taliban and traditionalists would find acceptable.

Tourism Directorate in Kabul leader Mohammad Saeed told The Associated Press that Taliban officials clearly believe there’s a middle ground to be found.

“I have been sent to this department on the instructions of the elders (ministers),” Saeed said. “They must trust me because they’ve sent me to this important place.”
