AUSTIN, Texas ( KEYE ) — Thousands were in attendance at the opening of Tesla’s Giga Factory in East Austin . The invite-only event attracted many far and near to get a glimpse of some of the action even if they weren’t able to make it inside. CBS Austin covered the grand opening and spoke to some who shared their thoughts on the Cyber Rodeo.

“I think that anywhere Elon shows up bring a lot of energy,” said one visitor.

Tesla’s billion-dollar factory opened its doors on Thursday welcoming nearly 15,000 people to enjoy music, food, and a tour of one of the largest buildings in the world by footprint.

Ashley Sansalone was one of many that came from out of town in hopes of joining the party. Sansalone drove all the way from Arizona aiming to catch the attention of Tesla CEO Elon Musk. He’s the co-founder of Elon GOAT Token a cryptocurrency that is 100% focused on building a $600,000 steel monument of the billionaires head.

“So it's Elon’s head on a goat body riding a rocket and it says the greatest of all time. We’re going to deliver it over here probably within the next six weeks.

So I just wanted to get a layout of the land and see what’s going on because we're super fans,” said Sansalone.

The factory is expected to come with benefits like creating thousands of jobs and economic growth. But realtor Ashti Shana says he wants to make sure those employees have somewhere to live.

“Jobs are going to be available but are homes ? So that’s key. Nobody could come to work unless there are homes and we really need to get on top of that,” said Shana.

Shana says he plans to use his resources to make sure people moving into the area can find housing that matches their criteria.

Those who didn’t receive an invite like Somer Addljawad who came from Washington stood near the factory on the feeder road to take in the action.

“Were here today because we wanted a trip and we knew Austin was having this event and were big fans of the brand,” she said.

Travis County Sheriff’s office said they anticipated mild traffic but we didn’t see any delays while out there. The party ended at midnight and although many traveled from all over, one thing everyone had in common was their love for Tesla and the man behind the brand.

“He’s doing something special here. I think Texas is a great state and he chose to be here for a lot of reasons versus California or anywhere else,” said Sansalone.

Tesla opened its Austin, Texas-based Gigafactory on Thursday, a crucial step in the company’s delayed plans to begin production of its electric Cybertruck. To celebrate the opening, Tesla held an event, billed as a “Cyber Rodeo,” to which it invited 15,000 people to listen to live music, eat food, and pay homage to Elon Musk and his company.

“We are really entering a new phase of Tesla’s future,” Musk told the audience. Clad in a black cowboy hat and aviator sunglasses, Musk said he was excited to begin working on Cybertruck production at last. “I can’t wait to see this baby in production, it’s going to be epic.”

Along with a new version of the Cybertruck, Musk also showed off a new Roadster vehicle, which is slated to begin production next year. He also teased a robotaxi he said would look “quite futuristic” but didn’t elaborate or provide any details.

It is the company’s fourth factory in the US, following the vehicle factory in Fremont, California, battery factory in Sparks, Nevada, and solar factory in Buffalo, New York. Tesla also has a vehicle factory outside Shanghai, China, and recently opened its first European factory near Berlin, Germany. Tesla spent an estimated $5 million purchasing the land outside Austin, plus another $1.1 billion to build the plant.

“We need a place where we can be really big, and there’s no place like Texas,” Musk said. “We going to move to a truly massive scale.”

The milestone was achieved less than two years after Musk declared that Austin would be the site of the company’s next Gigafactory and less than one year after Tesla officially moved its headquarters to Texas from California. In addition to the new Gigafactory, Musk also operates a SpaceX facility in Brownsville, Texas, and he reportedly has been living at the multimillion-dollar home of a friend along a lake in Austin. ( Musk denied that report , claiming he currently resides in a “tiny home” in Boca Chica.)

The addition of the new Gigafactory is expected to boost Tesla’s capacity in the US, which has been long constrained by space limitations. In 2018, the company famously erected a tent outside its factory in Fremont, California , to help meet production goals of the Model 3. At the time, Musk said the company’s California factory was “bursting at the seams.” Tesla has said it expects to make 1.5 million vehicles in 2022, after producing slightly less than 1 million vehicles last year — a 50 percent increase.

The Texas factory is expected to be the site where, starting in 2023, Tesla will make its long-delayed Cybertruck . Indications that the Cybertruck would be delayed first emerged last year, when the online reservation page  was changed  and then later withdrawn from the site. Musk had said that he expected a few trucks to be delivered to customers by the end of 2021, but no deliveries were ever made. The Cybertruck has already gone through some changes since its initial reveal in 2019 — including the addition of a comically oversized single windshield wiper, traditional folding mirrors, and invisible door handles.

In addition to the Cybertruck, Tesla also plans to build Model Ys and Model 3s destined for the East Coast, as well as the long-delayed Tesla Semi. The company has already started to build Model Y crossovers at the unfinished Texas Gigafactory in the fourth quarter of 2021, according to the company’s latest earnings report.

US-AUTOMOBILE-INDUSTRY-TESLA-ECONOMY

The Texas Gigafactory is located on about 2,100 acres of land east of the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport , with about two miles of exposure to Texas’ Colorado River. The company has said it will hire up to 5,000 workers at an average salary of $47,147, with entry-level positions starting at $35,000. Today, Tesla employs about 10,000 people at its only US car plant in Fremont.

In exchange, Texas’ local government has lavished tax breaks and incentives on the company worth millions of dollars. In 2020, the local school district voted to approve $50 million in tax breaks for Tesla, while Travis County commissioners approved a deal worth at least $14.7 million, according to Reuters .

But the welcome hasn’t been entirely free of conflict. Last week, local conservationists sought to block Tesla’s Cyber Rodeo celebration, citing traffic congestion, construction dust, and water pollution, according to Bloomberg . The company has also faced criticism from environmental groups for its Berlin factory project.

More broadly, Tesla has faced criticism over its labor practices and workplace safety concerns, mostly focused on its factory in Fremont. The company was sued by California’s civil rights agency for operating what it describes as a “racially segregated workplace.” And last year, a judge awarded a Black former Tesla employee  $137 million in damages  after he reported a hostile work environment where he heard “daily racist epithets” including the n-word and was told to “go back to Africa” by colleagues.

Tesla began scouting the US for a spot to build a new factory back in early 2020. “Scouting locations for Cybertruck Gigafactory. Will be central USA,” Musk tweeted  on March 10th . Nashville, Tennessee,  was reportedly an early candidate , before Austin and Tulsa ultimately emerged as the finalists. Officials in (and residents of) Tulsa put on a lot of flashy moves, like  painting a 70-foot-tall statue of an oil driller to look like Musk .

The new facility opens as the company continues to struggle with shutdowns of its Shanghai factory as the city deals with strict lockdown measures brought by an uptick in COVID-19 cases. Despite this, the company is reporting vigorous sales in the first quarter of 2022, with 310,048 vehicles reaching customers.

Tesla has added factory tours, a perk it used to offer to all owners long ago, as a new award in its owner referral program.

After an extended pause, Tesla relaunched its owner’s referral program earlier this year.

Referrers and buyers earn credits when referring buyers and when the buyers use referral links. Those Tesla credits can be redeemed for free Supercharger miles, items in its online store, and entries in a Cybertruck raffle.

Over the last few months, Tesla has adjusted the rewards on both sides. It used the program to offer more discounts and benefits to new buyers, and it has increased and decreased the number of credits referrers get per referral.

The automaker has also gradually added new awards that can be acquired by exchanging credits.

The most notable one has been an invite to the upcoming Cybertruck delivery event .

Now Tesla has added a new “Factory Tour” award available at both Fremont factory and Gigafactory Texas:

Tesla used to have a team specifically to arrange tours at the Fremont factory for owners. I took advantage of this myself, and I’m glad I did, but the automaker eventually discontinued the program.

Tesla Giga Berlin is one of the manufacturer's newest factories and builds vehicles using the latest technology. As soon as the construction of the main building and visitor area are completed, Giga Berlin will open tours for visitors. Built in record time by German standards, Giga Berlin continues to ramp up production. The factory has several times opened its doors to visitors and held a few events, including informational events outside its walls. To be even more open to the public, it looks like the company is planning to open the factory for tours that will help anyone familiarize themselves with the latest manufacturing processes used to build cars. On September 11, Tesla held an information event in Germany. 40 employees of the company shared important information with the public at 10 booths. These include the factory's water consumption, logistics, the battery plant that Tesla is currently building, and more. All this information was extremely important for local citizens, since the factory is located in their country. However, @Gf4Tesla /Twitter, who also attended the event, drew attention to information that would be of interest to everyone, regardless of their country of residence. Giga Berlin will offer public tours of the factory to visitors once the main building and visitor area are fully completed. The Tesla employee did not provide any more information, so any additional details will be announced later.

As one of the leading EV companies, Tesla has a fairly expansive global manufacturing set up. 

Tesla’s original factory, in Fremont, California, opened in 2010 and remains one of the state’s largest manufacturing sites. Back in 2021, it produced the first Model S which went on to be the fourth best selling EV in the US in 2022.

Also in the US is Tesla’s New York Gigafactory, opened in 2017, which makes Powerpack batteries as well as solar panels and parts for Supercharger stations, and Giga Texas in Austin (opened 2022) which is now the company’s headquarters as well as an assembly site. 

Giga Shanghai opened in 2019, Giga Berlin opened in 2022, and Giga Mexico is planned for opening in 2025. 

The Shanghai factory has evolved into a vital component of Tesla's supply chain, accounting for more than half of the company's vehicle deliveries in 2022.

The company has posed plans to open further gigafactories, the location of which has been heavily debated with options including the UK , India, South Korea and Indonesia.

"It would take 100 Gigafactories to transition the whole world to sustainable energy,” CEO Elon Musk said in 2016, sharing the sustainability focus at the heart of the facilities. 

Austin, Texas: Home to Tesla’s headquarters 

Covering 2,500 acres along the Colorado River with over 10 million square feet of factory floor, Gigafactory Texas is a US manufacturing hub for Model Y and the future home of Cybertruck.

The site isn’t just a manufacturing hub, however — it also includes the production of battery cells and even cathode material. 

It’s also Tesla’s headquarters, and the company plans to turn the entire campus into a public space. 

Musk has, famously, not given a lot of information about this “ecological paradise” outside mentioning “a boardwalk, hiking, and biking trails, and access to a stream.” 

The company is also planning to build something called “Giga Water Loop” which again, there is little information about. Mass speculation currently predicts that the project will be large, possibly a water recycling system, and maybe part of the wider campus ecological vision.

Experience the Tesla Giga Berlin Tour in this nearly 1-hour long video

The Tesla Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg County Fair was a huge hit yesterday, showcasing the company’s latest technology when it comes to vehicle manufacturing.

In the days and weeks leading up to the event, we knew Tesla was going to be holding tours of the massive factory. It was unclear however how much the company was going to show off.

As it turns out, it was a lot.

The several thousand lucky fans that were able to attend got an up-close look at the Model Y structural battery pack with 4680 cells , several Giga Press machines in action, a demonstration of the new matrix-LED adaptive headlights that will be on the made-in-Germany Model Y, and much much more.

There was so much to see it actually took close to one hour to complete the tour. And that was just a small section of the factory.

Fortunately for those of us who were not in attendance, a video of the entire tour has been posted to YouTube.

Tesla at 6 million cars: What it’s accomplished, what it hasn’t

Ahead of the release of preliminary Q1 2024 production and delivery figures, expected next week, it’s now official: Tesla has delivered more than 6 million vehicles since 2008, every one a battery-electric vehicle. 

Its 5 million total last September got a lot of attention. But 6 million is more important, because it cements Tesla as the first company in all but 100 years to achieve a remarkable milestone.

Nearly 10 years ago, Green Car Reports suggested Elon Musk had to deliver 6 million Teslas to become the highest-volume startup carmaker in the U.S. since the 1920s. That number today equates to what was done by the last U.S. startup to achieve significant volume production—more than 60 years ago. That would be Kaiser, a name now all but forgotten. Starting in 1945, Kaiser-Frazer (later Kaiser, then Kaiser-Jeep) built more than 700,000 cars.

Here’s how we got to that 6 million: In 1950, U.S. vehicle sales of 8 million cars represented 80 percent of total global production of just under 10 million. The market today is nine times that size—almost 90 million vehicles a year, according to J.D. Power. U.S. sales for 2023, at 15.6 million in 2023, are at just 17 percent of that total, with China far and away the world’s largest car market. So Kaiser’s 700,000-plus (over 10 years) roughly scales up to Tesla’s 6 million (over 15 years). 

With this latest milestone ticked off, it’s a good time to look at the things that Tesla has accomplished since 2008—and some of the things it hasn’t.

What Tesla Has Done

The company has launched and built hundreds of thousands of its first two models (2012 Model S, 2015 Model X) and millions of its smaller, less expensive pair (2017 Model 3, 2020 Model Y). Its fifth model, the 2024 Cybertruck, is ramping up to what would widely be called mass-production levels. But beyond those products themselves, Tesla has logged other notable accomplishments that have transformed the world’s vehicle business.

Tesla kicked the global auto industry in the backside, hard

The emergence of Tesla as a volume carmaker in 2013 and 2014 profoundly rattled most of the world’s automakers, who had viewed the limited-production, expensive 2008-2011 Tesla Roadster as an interesting science experiment.

The nervousness started in 2011, when Tesla showed a stripped Model S body shell at that year’s Detroit auto show. It was impossible to photograph the shell given how many engineers and executives from other makers swarmed around it— including Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda .

Ten years ago, a longtime insider in the German auto industry told us the story of what happened early in 2013 , when one of the German prestige brands got its hands on a Model S. First, it took the Tesla to its test track and teardown facility, where the company's test drivers hammered it around the track, recharged it, and hammered it again. Members of its product board were then told to come to the track and do the same. The Tesla was driven for several days at low speeds, high speeds, and everything in between; apparently it performed flawlessly. 

Then the executives responsible for that maker’s future products convened a meeting. They concluded the Model S electric luxury sedan—a sexy all-aluminum vehicle from a carmaker that hadn't existed 10 years before—provided a fast, comfortable, technologically advanced driving experience. No vehicle in their lineup, or even on the drawing board, could match the experience. That was deeply, profoundly unsettling to this particular maker of cars world-renowned for their brand image. 

And that, kids, is how we came to have the Porsche Taycan.

Tesla showed EVs could be fast, sexy, and desirable

In the late 2000s, when Tesla was struggling to get the Roadster into production, one auto reporter dismissed EVs out of hand. “The only people who care about electric cars,” this person said, “are annoying environmentalists and smelly hippies. And they don’t buy new cars.” That attitude, along with the image of EVs as glorified golf carts (not helped by low-speed neighborhood electric vehicles from the likes of GEM), presumed that EVs could never be alluring vehicles in their own right.

That was wrong, as the now-classic design of the Model S showed 12 years ago. That design, its startling performance, and the smooth, calm driving experience likely got some people to buy a Tesla despite its electric powertrain. It was the most tech-forward car on the market, sure, but more important, it was sexy and it was cool.

Tesla scaled up battery plants long before others

Tesla CEO Elon Musk first used the word “gigafactory” more than 10 years ago, in November 2013, as he discussed the company’s plans to scale up production to tens of thousands of cars a year, then hundreds of thousands. He had done the math and realized huge factories that built gigawatt-hours of battery cells every year would be needed for that many EVs. The first Gigafactory, outside Reno, Nevada, opened in July 2016, with the company’s cell partner Panasonic starting cell production in January 2017. 

Even so, it took roughly five years for Panasonic to turn consistent profits from that site—indicating the difficulty of producing a new cell format, with a new chemistry, in a new building, using a new workforce that had never worked on batteries before. How hard is that? According to a battery engineer, it’s “really, really, really, really, really, really, REALLY hard.”

Tesla has to build several of these plants globally, ideally one per vehicle factory. The industry as a whole has to build many dozens of them—and as GM’s very slow ramp of its Ultium cells and vehicles suggest, our battery engineer wasn’t kidding. Tesla was far ahead of that curve.

With ranges of more than 200 miles, every production Tesla easily surpassed the driving range of EVs from other makers, which spanned from 60 to 125 miles. But Tesla always intended its cars to be driven wherever any other car could go, including cross-country trips, so in 2012 it began construction of its first Supercharger DC fast-charging stations. Last September, it reached 50,000 Superchargers globally, of which roughly 21,000 of those were in the U.S.—and just six months later now, the Supercharger network stands at 25,000, according to the DOE. 

Tesla’s Superchargers are reliable, easy to use (plug in, walk away), and benefit from the company having designed and built the hardware and software for both the charging stations and the cars that use them. It’s the model for a ubiquitous, reliable, seamless DC fast-charging network.

Other makers had no intention of spending the tens of billions of dollars to create such a network, and 10 years later, the result is a confusing collection of money-losing regional and national charging networks of questionable reliability. 

As EV production scaled up, carmakers’ frustration with their charging “partners” reached a boiling point in 2022. Ford, which had been the most proactive, already resorting to its own “charge angels” to do the in-person spot-checking the charging networks omitted, shocked the industry last May. Its deal with Tesla to provide charging adapters and adopt the latest Tesla charging connector, now standardized, will give owners of its current EVs—and all the brands that have followed—the ability to charge at Superchargers. As of yet, with Ford and Rivian owners already tapping into Superchargers, it’s working.

Tesla has sold more EVs than any other maker in the world

The idea that a scrappy startup could sell more battery-electric cars than the world’s biggest makers was laughable to those makers’ executives—until Tesla simply did it. It took the company from July 2012 to March 2020 to build its first 1 million vehicles. Then it added a factory in Shanghai, and the rocket ship took off. In the three years that followed, it built 3 million more. It hit 5 million last September, just five and a half months after reporting 4 million total vehicles. Now 6 million, and … how soon 10 million? 20 million?

The Nissan Leaf, which began deliveries 18 months before the Model S, took 10 years to reach even half a million sales . Nissan said last summer it had surpassed 1 million global EV sales —a milestone that required 12 years. General Motors sold 160,000 thousand Chevrolet Volts in two generations before killing the car (plug-in hybrids are very hard to explain , and there’s no guarantee they’ll ever be plugged in ). Meanwhile, its much-vaunted array of Ultium-based EVs is now far behind schedule amid production problems and product glitches.

Tesla may soon lose the EV portion of its title to China’s BYD, however. BYD said just last week that it had sold 7 million cumulative “new energy vehicles”—including plug-in hybrids. In sheer production of vehicles with plugs, BYD has surged ahead of Tesla. It reported sales of more than 3 million plug-in vehicles in 2023 alone, although it remained behind in battery-electric sales, at 1.6 million vs. Tesla’s 1.8 million.

Tesla followed a traditional innovation path

Historically, almost every major advance in automotive technology has come at the high end of the market—either in luxury vehicles or performance cars. From Charles Kettering’s electric self-starter for combustion engines (Cadillac, 1912) through air conditioning (Packard, 1939) and automatic transmissions (Oldsmobile, 1948), more expensive brands and models pioneer new features because they deliver more profit margin to offset the cost of the new technologies. Things like disc brakes (Jaguar, 1952), fuel injection (Corvette, 1957), and turbocharging (Corvair Monza, 1962) came from the performance end of the scale—but all of these innovations gradually migrated down the lineup as they were made simpler, more reliable, and less expensive.

Tesla followed this path to a T, versus Nissan and Chevrolet, which launched their EVs as compact hatchbacks under $40,000. The first Tesla, really a proof of concept, was the low-volume, high-performance 2008 Roadster, carrying a six-figure price tag. Then came the Model S and Model X in 2012 and 2015, higher volume and somewhat lower-priced. The Model 3 cost under $50,000 when it debuted in 2017, as did the Model Y in 2020. Cybertruck aside, it’s spoken of a cheaper, $25,000 Tesla (often called the “Model 2”) to boost its volume even higher.

What Tesla Hasn’t Done

Tesla CEO Elon Musk says many things. Some are verifiably true when he says them. A few are verifiably false. And many may be true at some point in the future but remain, at best, aspirational on indefinite timelines rather than being actual features or products with defined launch dates.

Tesla hasn’t offered hands-off automated driving

The development history, extravagant marketing claims, and misleading titles of Tesla’s “Autopilot” and “Full Self-Driving” automated driving assist systems are their story, if not book or perhaps multi-volume series. But while both add active lane control to adaptive cruise control, they remain “hands-on” systems in which a driver must keep their hands on the wheel and pay attention to the road ahead. This is noted on Tesla’s website, but not widely appreciated by those who believe it sells “self-driving cars.”

Tesla may get there one day, but it’s not there now, while other makers are. As for the company’s claim that owners would get paid for letting their idle Model 3s act as robotaxis when not needed, we’ll just move right along. It’s several years overdue now … and counting.

Tesla hasn’t proven it can compete in full-size pickup trucks

While North American full-sized pickup trucks are simply too large for much of the rest of the world, they remain the core source of profits for the two and a half surviving Detroit automakers. While the Cybertruck has innovative technology in multiple areas, even if Tesla can overcome the challenges of building a high-quality vehicle with angular stainless-steel body panels, it remains unclear whether truck buyers want a vehicle that looks like a prop from a dystopian movie.

Tesla didn’t eliminate franchised auto dealerships

When Tesla started, franchise laws in most states banned automakers from selling cars to retail buyers if those sales competed with their existing franchised dealerships. Tesla had none of those, so it saw no problems setting up its own Stores to educate shoppers about EVs and assist them in ordering the cars online directly from the factory. State auto-dealer lobbyists saw this as an existential threat, and swiftly got laws changed to ban all direct sales, period.

Fifteen years later, the result is a patchwork of different state laws on where Tesla can legally sell cars to customers and where it can’t. In Texas, where Tesla has its headquarters and where it built its second vehicle assembly plant, it is technically illegal for Tesla to sell cars to Texans . Workarounds exist, but it shows the enduring political power of auto dealers en masse and their lavish lobbying dollars. 

Silicon Valley types often say dealers are unnecessary friction, intermediaries who serve no purpose beyond service and repairs, an anachronism that will inevitably fade away. Dealers have other ideas, and so far—despite their well-documented problems of knowledge, understanding, and ability to sell EVs—the dealers are still standing.

Tesla hasn’t shown battery swapping makes sense

As of earlier this month, Nio claimed to have opened over 2,300 swapping stations in China and Europe, conducting over 40 million battery swaps to date. 

But Tesla’s one foray into battery swapping— previewed with much hoopla in June 2013—never succeeded. The single swap station in Harris Ranch, California, was built by early 2015 but quietly shut down the next year, with Musk claiming customers weren’t interested. 

EV advocates suggested it had been largely an effort to gain extra ZEV credits for Tesla under California laws that awarded more credits for faster “fueling,” largely intended to give hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles an advantage. Those laws were later changed.

Tesla hasn’t moved beyond Musk

Elon Musk has always been the most public of CEOs, with huge followings on social media and in the news. He runs multiple companies simultaneously (Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, The Boring Company, and now X nee Twitter). His pronouncements are treated as gospel by his fans, and his political leanings seem to have become more extreme of late. He has been taken to court by numerous parties, from the Securities and Exchange Commission to a private citizen whom he called a pedophile in a tweet. 

The question for Tesla, though, is what would happen to the company and its image for innovation, advanced technology, and general coolness if Musk were unexpectedly out of commission. It’s unclear when or even whether Musk will relinquish the reins—though his workload seems more suited to five separate CEOs—despite his off-hand mention on an investor call that he had internally identified a replacement. Companies the size of Tesla have considerable momentum to carry on with business as usual during executive transitions, but continuing to bank mainly on the Musk factor remains a major business risk, one its Board is surely aware of.

What Tesla's troubles tell us about the EV industry

Tesla's 'unmitigated disaster' exposes trouble ahead for the electric vehicle market.

Tesla's disastrous earnings report this week has sparked a sell-off of the world's largest electric vehicle manufacturer and widespread skepticism about the state of the EV industry as a whole.

"This is a fork in the road, not just for Tesla, but for the entire industry," said Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives in an interview on Wednesday.

Tesla's stock sold off sharply this week after its earnings report showed the company was on track for its slowest quarter since 2022.

Elon Musk's company blamed the lower production and deliveries at least in part on what it called temporary logistical issues.

Those temporary factors include shipping disruptions in the Red Sea and an arson attack on its new German battery plant.

Analysts were expecting softer numbers, but Ives called it "an unmitigated disaster."

Tesla stock has fallen more than 33 per cent this year. Back in January of 2022 it was trading for more than $400 US. By the beginning of April its stock was worth a mere $167 US.

Tesla's bad news often acts as a sort of proxy for how people feel about the broader state of the EV market.

On that front, recent headlines have not been encouraging. 

EV market in 'limbo'

In the United States, car-rental giant Hertz is selling about 20,000 electric vehicles due to higher expenses related to collision and damage, and replacing them with cars using internal combustion engines.

In October, General Motors announced it would cut production of EVs, citing slowing demand.

In January, Ford slashed production of its electric pickup truck in half.

"It's true, the pace of EV growth has slowed, which has created some uncertainty. We will build to demand," GM's CEO Mary Barra said on an earnings call.

But at the same time, Barra said she was "encouraged" by industry forecasts that showed EV sales in the U.S. were set to rise at least 10 per cent this year.

Longtime automotive industry analyst Joe McCabe says the EV market is in a sort of "limbo" right now.

He says growth is still in the forecast, but that significant challenges stand in the way of automakers taking advantage of that growth.

He says there were eight different kinds of electric vehicles for sale in North America in 2020; this year, there are 53. But his company, Auto Forecast Solutions, says there is a wave of new choices coming to consumers in the next six years.

"We have 141 unique battery electric vehicles in our forecast in 2030 in North America alone. Same consumer, all saying, 'Which one do I want?'" he said.

Right now, he says the EV market is still being dominated by early adopters. A broader market may exist, but to pull them in, electric vehicle manufacturers have to address some key challenges.

"There are many hurdles in EV adoption: there is cost, there is range, there is infrastructure and raw materials. They're getting better, but they still exist," McCabe told CBC News.

Add to all those concerns the recent spike in borrowing costs.

As interest rates soared, consumers were suddenly less interested in getting a newer vehicle.

"They go: no, I'm going to go buy a $40,000 internal combustion engine vehicle because my price now per month compared to COVID times is going to be $200 more for the same vehicle because the interest rates are up," said MCabe

Growth potential

Still, by most forecasts, the broader EV market is set to grow. By some measures, it's set to grow substantially.

The federal Liberal government is hoping to pass legislation requiring all new vehicles sold in Canada to be zero-emissions by 2035.

"So 12 years from now, 100 per cent of new vehicles sold would have to be electric vehicles. But people who have gas-powered engines would be able to continue using them past 2035; they just won't be able to buy new ones," Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault told CBC's Power and Politics.

Other countries have seen the share of EVs sold soar in recent years.

But the bulk of global growth will come via mass production and adoption of EVs in China

The China Passenger Car Association says shipments of all electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles to dealers are projected to increase 25 per cent in 2024. Last year saw a 36 per cent increase.

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has seen its total profits rise by more than 86 per cent year-over-year. The EV company is in a pitched battle with Tesla for top spot in terms of global EV market share.

Still, analysts say the EV market is going through an important test. And Ives says the electric vehicle industry needs Tesla.

"Clearly others could benefit from Tesla's demise. But just like Apple is to the smartphone market and Meta is to social media, that's what Tesla is to electric vehicles," said Ives.

'Fork in the road'

Even after this week's disappointment, Ives has listed Tesla stock to "outperform" — meaning he predicts the company can and will turn things around. He says there's a "Category 5 storm" ahead, but that's why this week is such an important moment.

He says Tesla hasn't had a new model in years, it still doesn't advertise and, above all, it's no longer the only game in town. Ives also says he believes Tesla CEO Elon Musk has plenty of ways to adjust to the changing market.

"I think there's a long-term growth story here," said Ives. "It's a fork in the road where either they turn this around and this was a bad nightmare or there are darker days ahead."

What Tesla’s Troubles Signal for the E.V. Revolution

The carmaker’s disappointing results point to slowing demand and a “sharp deterioration in growth” that extends beyond Elon Musk’s company.

Tesla’s woes prompt an E.V. reassessment

Wall Street has sounded the alarm for weeks that the transition to electric vehicles may be stalling, despite billions in government subsidies and huge investments by auto giants.

Tesla’s latest sales figures suggest that the pullback may be worse than thought — and beyond one company’s ability to fix.

Tesla’s numbers undershot forecasts. The car maker’s stock fell nearly 5 percent on Tuesday after it reported deliveries of 387,000 cars worldwide in the first quarter — the Evercore ISI estimate was 443,000 — in its first year-on-year quarterly decline since 2020.

That has contributed to a more than 30 percent decline in Tesla’s stock, which has made it one of the worst performers on the S&P 500 this year.

Tesla had warned of “ notably lower ” growth this year. The company has faced setbacks including a suspected arson attack on its German gigafactory and shipping delays tied to the turmoil in the Red Sea. Meanwhile, high interest rates and the rise of cheaper Chinese E.V.s are sapping global demand and eating into Tesla’s once dominant market share.

Some Elon Musk critics — including Ross Gerber, an outspoken Tesla investor — laid the blame squarely on the company’s C.E.O., saying that his “toxic behavior” had “ absolutely damaged the brand .” (Musk has said little about the Tesla numbers, except to call Gerber “ an idiot ,” and to note “it was a tough quarter” for all E.V. makers.)

Musk isn’t wrong on that front. China’s BYD, which briefly dethroned Tesla as the world’s biggest E.V. maker, on Tuesday reported sales of roughly 300,000 last quarter, a 13 percent gain from the same period earlier but a quarter-on-quarter dip. The Warren Buffett-backed carmaker has gained market share in Europe and Asia by appealing to more cost-conscious buyers, though it doesn’t sell cars in the U.S. because of tariffs.

Kia, Toyota and Volkswagen have reported better sales growth, though all are coming off smaller bases than Tesla or BYD.

Analysts are worried that E.V. demand may cool further . Government credits for car buyers in the U.S. and Europe have expired in recent months. And concerns about charging times and battery range are pushing some consumers to pick hybrid-engine vehicles or stick with less expensive gasoline-powered ones.

Is it a blip? Over all, E.V. sales were flat in the fourth quarter of 2023, despite being up 40 percent year on year, “suggesting a sharp deterioration in growth,” Tom Narayan, an auto analyst at RBC Capital Markets, wrote to investors on Tuesday.

HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING

President Biden talks trade, TikTok and more with China’s Xi Jinping. In a call on Tuesday, the two leaders covered trade policies , the detainment of U.S. nationals and China’s support of Russia despite its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The conversation precedes Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s visit to Beijing this week , where she is expected to address China’s dominance over raw materials essential for E.V.s and solar panels.

Fed officials warn that they’re in no hurry to cut interest rates. Two voting members of the central bank’s rate-setting committee, Loretta Mester and Mary Daly, said that they saw three cuts as likely this year — but added that, with the economy growing, there’s no rush to do so. Investors on Wednesday penciled in a 66 percent chance of a June cut, down slightly from the prior week.

Taiwan is rocked by its worst earthquake in decades. The 7.4-magnitude tremor , which struck shortly before 8 a.m. local time, occurred in the country’s east coast but could be felt in the capital, Taipei; at least nine are dead and hundreds are wounded. TSMC , the world’s biggest maker of advanced semiconductors, briefly evacuated some factory workers, amid worries about potential harm to the country’s chip manufacturing sector.

Can going private fix Endeavor’s problems?

After years of complaining that public investors didn’t understand what they were building, Endeavor executives, led by the Hollywood superagent Ari Emanuel, are finally getting their wish: a breakup with Wall Street.

But will taking Endeavor private — with the help of Silver Lake, its longtime financial partner — actually make help the company grow?

Endeavor was built on serial deal making. Emanuel and his team believed that their company could be not just be a talent agency, but an entertainment hub that supplied media companies with content (and the talent that created it) as well.

With the help of Silver Lake, which invested in Endeavor in 2012, Emanuel bought an array of assets: IMG, the sports- and fashion-focused talent agency, Professional Bull Riders; New York Fashion Week; and sports-betting technology.

The crowning achievement was buying Ultimate Fighting Championship and World Wrestling Entertainment, combining them into TKO Group, a publicly traded combat-sports company that Endeavor controls.

But investors were unimpressed, with Endeavor often trading below its I.P.O. stock price.

Going private means that Emanuel and Silver Lake are freer to pursue their vision: “We are all in on working with the Endeavor team and our trusted anchor investors to create value by accelerating growth at scale,” Egon Durban , Silver Lake’s co-C.E.O., said of the deal announced on Tuesday, which values the company at $13 billion, including debt.

The big question: Will Endeavor’s strategy make sense now? Profiting from content deals hasn’t always worked out. TKO’s stock tumbled after W.W.E. scored a better rights agreement for its SmackDown franchise.

But Endeavor and Silver Lake appear to be betting that they’ll benefit from giving their premium strategy more time to play out. They also believe that the sum of Endeavor’s parts are greater than yesterday’s deal valuation.

Silver Lake has gotten rich from this kind of deal before. It partnered with Michael Dell to buy out other investors in Dell, then a mostly unloved maker of personal computers. That deal was bitterly contested by the activist financier Carl Icahn, who accused the two of buying the computer maker on the cheap .

Dell Technologies eventually returned to the public markets — and Dell, Silver Lake and their partners are believed to have made a profit exceeding $40 billion .

The deal hurdles facing Paramount’s board

Merger talks between Paramount, the media company that’s the home of the “Top Gun” franchise and Nickelodeon, and the studio Skydance are heating up, with the two discussing entering into exclusive talks , DealBook’s Lauren Hirsch and The Times’s Benjamin Mullin report.

Such a move would be a big step forward in a process dogged by uncertainty for months. But many questions, and obstacles, remain.

The Paramount special board committee is under extra pressure to be fair. Shari Redstone controls Paramount via special shares held by National Amusements, her family’s holding company. Under the terms being discussed, Skydance would buy National Amusements and then combine with Paramount.

But virtually every time there’s a controlling shareholder, companies appoint a group of directors to ensure that any offer treats all investors fairly.

Given the shareholder litigation over the merger of Viacom and CBS that created Paramount, the special committee here has been especially cautious, DealBook hears. Some investors have expressed concern that a Skydance deal would benefit Redstone more than other shareholders.

Then there’s the question of cultural fit. Personality matches matter in any deal, but are especially pertinent when it comes to media companies that tend to have executives with outsize personas.

How will that play out in the potential union of an old-school company like Paramount and Skydance, a much-younger studio led by David Ellison , the son of the tech billionaire Larry Ellison?

Don’t forget that there are others interested in Paramount. They include the investment firm Apollo, which has offered $11 billion to buy Paramount’s movie studio, and the media mogul Byron Allen.

— Jon Stewart , a host of “The Daily Show.” On his most recent episode, he told his guest, the F.T.C. chair and aggressive antitrust enforcer Lina Khan, that when he had an Apple TV+ show, the tech giant urged him not to interview her.

Behind Biden’s love-hate approach to corporate America

President Biden has taken aim at big companies in recent months on issues including rising prices, tax breaks and big mergers. But he has also introduced huge corporate subsidies via his climate and manufacturing laws, and presided over an enormous increase in oil production.

In short, he has sought to walk a fine line between challenging corporate America and courting it to help carry out his policy goals, The Times’s Jim Tankersley writes. His re-election chances may depend in part on how well he manages that balance.

Democratic pollsters have encouraged Biden to hit big companies for political gain, particularly by emphasizing his plans to raise corporate taxes and call out companies for so-called shrinkflation and junk fees.

The hope is that those attacks will expose a vulnerability for Donald Trump, whose policies as president largely benefited companies — and who is currently leading Biden in key battleground states , according to a new poll.

Biden has also sought counsel from C.E.O.s. He regularly asks their advice on issues including supply chains and worker training. Key initiatives like infrastructure improvements and increased domestic manufacturing rely on cooperation with the private sector.

Not all corporate leaders buy his approach. C.E.O.s including Jamie Dimon of JPMorgan Chase and Ken Griffin of Citadel have criticized Biden’s economic policies, while oil and gas executives have denounced an administration pause on the permitting of new liquefied natural gas export terminals.

Some may favor the likely chaos of a potential Trump return. “You can look at a Trump administration with a lot more uncertainty, but directionally, the regulatory effort was moving to lighten the regulatory costs,” Neil Bradley, the chief policy officer at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, told The Times.

While the Biden administration has been clear about what regulations will look like, they’ll still be onerous, Bradley added. “And so, interestingly, there’s a lot of people saying, ‘The chaos is better,’” he said.

Janet Yellen’s food tour in China sets social media ablaze, one year after she accidentally ate a psychedelic mushroom

Ever since she ate mushrooms that can have psychedelic effects in Beijing last July,  Janet Yellen  has united Americans and Chinese in wanting to know what she will eat next.

And now that the U.S. Treasury secretary is  back in China this week,  having stopped in Guangzhou and Beijing, many people are less interested in her travels to rebuild relations between the world’s two biggest economies, and more fascinated with what she’ll eat next and where.

From her forays into Sichuan dumplings to Peking duck, mouth watering chicken or twice cooked pork — even Chinese politicians at the highest ranks of the party are taking notice of her popularity on the culinary arts scene.

Ahead of a highly anticipated bilateral meeting Sunday between  Yellen and Premier Li Qiang  at the Great Hall of People, he noted in his opening remarks that Yellen’s visit has “indeed drawn a lot of attention in society” with media covering her trip. She prefers to dine among other patrons and doesn’t like partitions keeping her from other diners — making her silver hair highly recognizable when she’s out and about.

The use of her chopsticks at a restaurant in Guangzhou has also been a particular observation.

A social media account run by Chinese state media posted a catchy video of Yellen on her first night in China, eating with the U.S. ambassador and other officials at Tao Tao Ju, a Guangzhou restaurant that dates to 1880.

The post, one of the most viewed on the Weibo microblog app the next morning, praised Yellen for holding chopsticks well but added, “as a U.S. official, Yellen needs to know more about China than just food. Only by knowing more about China can we set right the American view of the world, of China, of China-U.S. relations.”

And during a Sunday meeting with Dean of Peking University, Huang Yiping, he joked that China has been watching the news of her arrival as well as her dining, to which Yellen interjected: “My chopstick skills!”

In the U.S., Yellen also often stops for fast food and at local eateries during domestic trips ahead of events to promote Biden administration policies like the Democrats’ Inflation Reduction Act and the infrastructure law, and becomes the news.

A stop last November at In-N-Out burger in San Francisco before heading to the airport to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting also became a viral moment.

In China, her very first viral moment happened when she unknowingly ate mushrooms than can become psychedelic when cooked improperly at a Yunnan restaurant called Yi Zuo Yi Wang during her first trip as Treasury secretary last July. Mushroom-gate went viral across the internet and the restaurant has since dedicated a part of its menu to Yellen’s visit, where diners can order what she ate.

She told CNN at the time, “There was a delicious mushroom dish. I was not aware that these mushrooms had hallucinogenic properties. I learned that later.”

In China for a second time this week, Yellen is hoping to make headway on the issue of what she calls Chinese overproduction of solar products, electric vehicles and lithium-ion batteries that she warns threaten global economic stability if left unchecked.

And this time around in Beijing, Yellen ate at Lao Chuan Ban, a popular Sichuan restaurant. She also had lunch with Beijing Mayor Yin Yong at the Beijing International Hotel.

On Monday evening, her last night in China, Yellen visited Jing-A Brewing Co. in Beijing — co-founded by an American — where she ordered a Flying Fist IPA, a beer made with American hops.

She took a sip and called it “excellent.”

We can see a Ferris wheel on site for its up to 9,000 visitors, tours of inside the factory watching robots make Tesla vehicles, the Giga Press machines in action, tours and rides of the Tesla Model Y, plus a dance party as well.

Visitors also saw a preview of the Model Y with Tesla’s upcoming 4680 structural battery pack , adaptive headlights on display, a preview of a possible new colour (deep crimson), and more.

While Tesla said it was limiting visitors to residents only, numerous others from outside Berlin were able to attend, as some Tesla clubs received tickets, while other YouTubers were also on site.

Giga Berlin is set to start production of the Model Y for Europe, slated to begin by year’s end.

Tesla shares fall after deliveries drop 8.5% from a year ago

Tesla  on Tuesday published its  first-quarter vehicle production  and deliveries report for 2024 that showed deliveries fell 8.5% from the year-ago quarter and about 20% from the fourth quarter. Here are the key numbers:

  • Total deliveries Q1 2024: 386,810
  • Total production Q1 2024: 433,371

Vehicle production declined 1.7% year over year and 12.5% sequentially for Tesla.

Shares dropped about 6.5%.

Tesla doesn’t break out sales by model but reported that it produced 412,376 Model 3/Y cars and delivered 369,783. It produced 20,995 of its other models and delivered 17,027.

In the same period last year, the electric automaker reported 422,875 deliveries and production of 440,808 vehicles. In the fourth quarter of 2023, Tesla reported 484,507 deliveries and production of 494,989 vehicles.

Deliveries are the closest approximation of sales reported by Tesla but are not precisely defined in the company’s shareholder communications.

Tesla’s deliveries fell below even the lowest analyst estimate.

According to a mean of 11 estimates compiled by FactSet, analysts were expecting deliveries of around 457,000 for the period ending March 31. Estimates ranged from a high of 511,000 deliveries to a low of 414,000 for the first quarter, with estimates updated in March ranging from 414,000 to 469,000 deliveries.

Independent auto industry researcher Troy Teslike, whose work is closely followed by Tesla fans, had expected deliveries to come in around 409,000.

Tesla’s head of investor relations Martin Viecha sent around a company-compiled consensus based on 30 analysts’ estimates over the weekend to select investors. The consensus, which was viewed by CNBC, said analysts were expecting a mean of 443,027 deliveries and a median of 431,125 deliveries for the quarter.

Tesla faced numerous challenges in the first quarter.

“Decline in volumes was partially due to the early phase of the production ramp of the updated Model 3 at our Fremont factory and factory shutdowns resulting from shipping diversions caused by the Red Sea conflict and an arson attack at Gigafactory Berlin,” Tesla said in a statement.

Houthi militia attacks on shippers in the Red Sea disrupted Tesla’s component supply and temporarily suspended production at its German factory outside of Berlin in January. In March, environmental activists set fire to infrastructure near that same factory, depriving Tesla of sufficient operation power and again causing a pause in production.

In China, Tesla faced an onslaught of competition from domestic EV makers, including BYD and newcomers such as the phone maker Xiaomi. After sluggish sales numbers for its China-made cars in January and February, Tesla reduced production of its Model 3 and Model Y at its Shanghai plant and slashed workers’ schedules to 5 days a week from 6 and a half days.

In the U.S., reviews were mixed for Tesla’s newest model — an angular pickup dubbed the Cybertruck — which the EV maker only began to sell in small numbers in December last year.

A series of discounts and incentives appeared to be less effective in driving sales volume than in the past for Tesla.

During the final days of the first quarter, Tesla CEO  Elon Musk  mandated that all sales and service staff  install and demo  the newest version of the company’s premium driver assistance system for customers in North America before handing over their cars. The system is marketed as Full Self-Driving but doesn’t make Tesla cars autonomous. They require a human at the wheel, ready to steer or brake at any time.

Shares of Tesla dropped 29% in the first quarter, the biggest decline since the end of 2022 and the third-steepest quarterly plunge since the company’s IPO in 2010.

The company scheduled an earnings call for April 23 to discuss quarterly results.
