Editorial Reviews

PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED JOURNEY RADIO BROADCAST FROM 1980 Journey s story is one of massive success. This superb live broadcast recording, from Houston s The Summit during the Departure tour in 1980, catches the band amidst their most creative and successful period. Between 1978 and 1987 Journey had no less than seven consecutive multi-platinum albums. They have also had a staggering 18 Top 40 singles, six of which reached the Top 10. By the time of this concert, the band had already been through six different line-ups, although guitarist Neal Schon, keyboard player Gregg Rolie and bassist Ross Valory remained central to the group and had all been founder members. Journey had been formed in San Francisco seven years earlier, in 1973, by ex-members of Latin rock superstars Santana (Schon and Rolie) and cult West Coast psychedelic band Frumious Bandersnatch (Vallory and original rhythm guitarist George Tickner). In their first few years the band released three well-regarded, but not particularly successful albums, Journey (1975), Look Into The Future (1976) and Next (1977). But it wasn t until 1978 that the band really began to hit the big time, after the addition of vocalist Steve Perry, who introduced a much more Pop-oriented and commercial element to the band s previous Progressive Rock sound. Infinity (1978), the first album to feature Perry broke into the charts, it soon reached number 21 and eventually went platinum; the band also had hits with both singles Lights and Wheel in the Sky, featured here. Highly-regarded English producer Roy Thomas Baker, who had been responsible for overseeing Queen s majestic studio recordings, was in the chair for this album - and the result was quite clearly Journey s most commercially-appealing record thus far! The album is heavily featured in this concert recording: there are great versions too of Feeling That Way, Anytime, Winds Of March, Patiently and Opened the Door. By the time of the next album, Evolution , the following year, British drummer Aynsley Dunbar had been replaced by Steve Smith, who was previously with Ronnie Montrose s band. The album was another excellent Baker-produced platinum-seller and the single Lovin , Touchin , Squeezin went Top 20 - a fine live version is featured here, together with Just The Same Way, Lovin You Is Easy and Too Late. The same line-up held together for the next recording, the band s most successful album to date, Departure (1980) which also spawned the hit single Any Way You Want It. It is this line-up that is featured on this broadcast, playing superb versions of several cuts: Where Were You, People and Places, Walks like a Lady, Line of Fire and Precious Time. Unlike its predecessors, this album was largely recorded live-in-the-studio, which lent a great dynamic edge to the music. Whilst the set list here concentrates almost exclusively on Journey s three most successful alums to date, the band do delve back into the more distant past to spotlight a version of the instrumental Kohoutek from their eponymous debut album.

Meaning of The Summit by Spiritbox

"The Summit" by Spiritbox seems to be a song about pushing oneself to climb to the top, both metaphorically and literally. The lyrics suggest that the narrator has been looking for a way out, which seems to suggest that they are trying to escape from something in their life. However, they realize that if they stay in their current situation, they will continue to face doubt and criticism from others. The references to the setting sun and serpent tongue suggest that these criticisms are coming from negative people.

The chorus of the song emphasizes the idea that the narrator is driven by venom, which seems to represent their inner strength and determination. They are desperate to find the beating heart that always makes them run, suggesting that they are motivated by a deep sense of purpose or passion.

The bridge seems to suggest that the process of climbing to the summit is a difficult one, and that the narrator may need the support of others to get through it. The repeated line "I could not go on/ Break me down and hold me 'til the dawn" suggests that the journey has taken a toll on the narrator, but that they are determined to push through it.

Overall, "The Summit" seems to be a song about the determination to succeed, even in the face of criticism and hardship. The reference to venom suggests that the narrator is fueled by a powerful force within themselves, and that they are willing to do whatever it takes to reach their goals.

Park City Song Summit Spotlights the Artist’s Journey Up the Mountain

Park City Song Summit is a cross between a mountain retreat for music fans and a SXSW-style event with insightful talks followed by live performances at night.

This has been a boom year for the music industry with national touring moving back into full swing after touring was brought to a halt in 2020 by the COVID-19 pandemic. There have also been some new events with delayed debuts that have finally been able to spring to life, notably including the Park City Song Summit in the famed mountain town of Park City, Utah.

Advertised as something like a cross between a mountain retreat for music fans and a South by Southwest-style event with insightful talks from artists and industry pros during the day followed by live performances in downtown clubs at night, the Song Summit delivered over four nights and three days from Wednesday, 7 September to Saturday, 10 September. The Summit had a loose theme billed around being “a place to examine the struggles and breakthroughs that artists face on their creative journey”,  including issues ranging from drug addiction and mental health to creative challenges and the pressures of being in the spotlight.

“We would love it if more people were thinking of who our artists are,” Park City Song Summit CEO/Co-Founder Ben Anderson says as MC at the opening night dinner on Wednesday, regarding mental health issues for musicians. The festivities then kick off with solo acoustic sets from rising blues artist Adia Victoria and Jason Isbell , which epitomizes how Song Summit’s lineup mixes fresh voices with some well-known stars.

Adia Victoria

“It’s kinda like whatever you can find, you take it and try to make a whole song out of it before you lose it or forget it,” Isbell says regarding the question of which comes first between music or lyrics. Well known for his sobriety from drinking, Isbell notes that his song “What Have I Done to Help” was sparked by inspiration from a chocolate mushroom experience.

Exploring different concepts about how artists tap creativity and spirituality to make themselves feel whole becomes a running theme at Song Summit. Having Isbell cap off the opening night feels fitting since he and his wife Amanda Shires performed a noble service to help music fans feel more whole in 2020 when they streamed live jam sessions from their barn on a daily basis in heroic fashion during the earliest and loneliest days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jason Isbell

The Song Summit format from Thursday to Saturday features “labs” in roughly one-hour blocks from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm each day, followed by evening performances at the clubs on Main Street. Here follows a PopMatters special report on the best of what we saw go down in Park City, jumping around through time and space to hit the moments that made the biggest impressions.

Jeremy Ivey and Margo Price join together onstage for a semi-secret team-up

The Thursday night lineup at the O.P. Rockwell Cocktail Lounge & Music Hall is stacked with a bill of Jeremy Ivey , Celisse, and Warren Haynes. Many music fans have probably come to know Ivey through collaborations with his budding superstar wife Margo Price , but the man is a talented singer/songwriter himself. It was interesting to see the Song Summit put Ivey on stage here, with Price billed only to appear in two of the labs. Would Price make a guest appearance with Ivey? Modern music theorists who’ve been following the ascent of the couple’s careers over the past few years have reason to suspect the answer is yes.

Ivey comes out solo acoustic and opens with “Tomorrow People”, one of many zeitgeisty tunes from his great 2020 album Waiting Out the Storm (which Price produced.) The song wryly comments on modern problems by asking future folks about their nuclear threat level, virtual sex, and if they still blame shit they do on different colored people. Some new songs follow, including a charming tune about musicians titled “Snowball’s Chance in Hell” and “Orphan Child”, co-written with Price. Ivey jokes about how she has a better voice than he does and so it seemed odd that the Song Summit asked him to sing and her to talk, as he humbly laces self-deprecating humor through the set.

the journey summit song

“My wife looked at the setlist and asked if I was going to play anything anyone knows,” Ivey says, kidding himself a bit more before Price soon joins him for the rest of the set. The collaboration is a special treat for Song Summit since these two don’t often perform together for the public these days.  “Revelations” is a heartfelt gem about if Jesus was a traveling musician and had been dropped by his label, with Price singing about how she needs saving too. Then there’s the title track from Ivey’s 2019 album The Dream and the Dreamer , a melancholy number that benefits from Price’s harmonies. The energy level surges on the rocking “All Kinds of Blue”, a shimmery single they wrote together and released in 2021 that shines as they sing it out in tandem.

The honky tonk blues of “Greyhound” is another winner as the dynamic duo harmonizes on both the verses and choruses again. Ivey introduces the last song as one he put together when he was asked to take a shot at writing a Christmas song for the Amazon corporation. He goes on to satirically wonder why he never heard back from them on the tune titled “Christmas Time in Tent City”, a typically Jeremy Ivey type of tune in how it aims to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.

Lab: Maybe We’ll Make It | with Margo Price & Marissa R. Moss

The afternoon labs are held in three tents on the grounds of the Lodges at Deer Valley, the Song Summit’s headquarters. The day after Price performs with Ivey, she’s interviewed by Nashville-based journalist Marissa R. Moss on the topic of her impending memoir, Maybe We’ll Make It . Both Ivey and Price’s mom are in the front row as she speaks about the ups and downs of her quest for artistic freedom and career success. “There’s always the joke; see you on the long climb back to the middle,” Price says in one of many sincerely candid moments.

PCSS Margo Price lab

Moss notes how honest the book is, praising Price for her perseverance through an array of challenges. Price admits she’s struggled to stay grounded at times but starts to tear up a bit when speaking of how she’d still be writing songs in a cabin somewhere even if her career hadn’t taken off with some timely support from Third Man Records. She talks about how she was burning the candle at both ends and decided to stop drinking after learning that women who have three drinks a week are apparently twice as likely to get breast cancer. She says she feels really good now and still dabbles in psychedelic mushrooms, which led to her epiphany about drinking (as well as apparently catalyzing the writing of the scintillating new banger “Been to the Mountain” from her impending new album.)

Other interesting tales include anecdotes about how their house was a very social part of the Nashville scene in the earlier years of their careers when artists like Brittany Howard from Alabama Shakes and Alynda Segarra from Hurray for the Riff Raff would come through and stay over. Then there were hard times after she and Ivey lost a baby, were cheating on each other and writing songs about it they would play at the breakfast table before they could even talk about it. Price describes friends referring to them as “Kurt & Courtney” due to all their drinking, carousing, and arguing. She also notes that the first draft of the book didn’t have as many personal details, like the “White Claw Tuesdays” where she’d drink ten of the inexplicably popular hard seltzers and wake up in the bathtub.

During the Q&A, Price is asked about being an artist in residence at the recent Sacred Rose Festival in Chicago and says she loved the role. She says her collaboration with Goose was “amazing” and that it was her second time performing with Phil Lesh , following the 2018 Outlaw Festival show at the Hollywood Bowl where she was secretly pregnant and Lesh charmingly helped her out onstage after she’d been puking backstage. The fact that Price seems equally at home with a rising buzz band like Goose, as with a living legend like Lesh only seems to confirm further that this very talented woman is all about the music.

Rising Appalachia dazzle Song Summit at the intersection of art & activism

Margo Price was a well-known star coming in, whereas Rising Appalachia had previously flown under this reporter’s radar and are a revelation at Song Summit. The band gets a primetime slot on Friday night at O.P. Rockwell, in between sets from Bonny Light Horseman and Father John Misty . In this case, their performance is preceded by two labs that delve into the long and winding road of the band’s artistic journey.

Rising Appalachia

“Melody for the Roots of Us” on Thursday afternoon turns out to be one of the more insightful labs, as grassroots festival organizer JK McKnight interviews sisters Leah Song and Chloe Knight on how their band Rising Appalachia combine folk music traditions with wider influences from urban culture and their longtime devotion to social justice activism. The sisters relate how their mom was obsessed with Appalachian folk music and so they grew up immersed in that world, yet were also influenced by the more modern sounds they heard growing up in Atlanta.  Leah relates how they never really even decided to start a band, that it was other people believing in them and coaxing them along into the performing realm, such as teachers, activists, and elders.

Leah goes on to explain how they grew up in a social justice environment, were more involved in activism than art as young adults, and were moved to blend this into their music. “You don’t all have to agree with each other to have a catharsis through music,” she says, explaining how they decided they wanted to pursue making music that matters but without alienating anyone. The sisters also speak of their path in concluding that you don’t have to be a starving artist, that you can have a day job, and how it’s been healthy to find a lifestyle where they don’t have to feel like their art is something that has to be desperately extracted from the muses (synchronistically touching on the moving episode 11 of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series on Netflix.)

RISING APPALACHIA

A second lab on Friday with Joe Pug for his podcast The Working Songwriter finds the sisters offering further insights. “If this doesn’t feel good and feel honest, then we don’t wanna do it,” they say of their process and being in it for the long haul as opposed to strategizing for a quick money grab. They talk about having experimented with a sliding scale for CD sales at their shows and finding that some people would give $20 instead of $10. Hearing the sisters speak about their artistic principles in the labs winds up really enhancing appreciation of Rising Appalachia’s dynamic performance on Friday night.

There’s a mesmerizing vibe throughout much of the band’s set as they blend various instrumentation with rich harmonies, deep songs, and vibrant jams. “Indigo Dance” from the band’s 2019 Leylines album is an early highlight, blending a quasi-shamanic vibe with vocals that mix hop cadences and folk harmonies. “Love Her in the Mornin’” provides a peak moment, starting with a bluegrass vibe before evolving into an extended jam over a rocking feel-good groove. “Catalyst” from 2021’s The Lost Mystique of Being in the Know album stands out as an empowering song with a mystical sonic landscape, as the sisters implore the listener to be an alchemist for change.  Both ladies have a charismatic aura that seems to emanate from their genuine compassion for the world and dreams of manifesting a more harmonious society through music, as they feed off each other and their bandmates for sonic synergy.

The upbeat “Resilient” takes the concept of musical empowerment further still, as the sisters sing out for “power to the peaceful” and a revolutionary sentiment to “see the system brought down to its knees.” They keep going, singing “What are you gonna do about it when the world comes undone? My voice feels tiny and I’m sure so does yours, But put us all together we make a mighty roar…”  After this set, one can’t help but feel like wanting to join Rising Appalachia in a movement for musical revolution to help save the planet.

The artist known as Father John Misty wasn’t booked for a lab per se, but his solo set that follows Rising Appalachia turns into a songwriting clinic thanks to his uniquely insightful lyrics on the modern condition and endearing banter between songs. He wins the audience quickly with “Total Entertainment Forever”, a forward-looking tune similar in vibe to Jeremy Ivey’s “Tomorrow People” except that it preceded it on 2017’s Pure Comedy album.

“I spend a lot of time staring into the middle distance and it’s pretty much worrying about never writing another song again,” Misty says in a revealing sentiment that many of the artists here at Song Summit can probably relate to. This prefaces his upbeat 2012 classic “I’m Writing a Novel”, a uniquely personal yet still universal tune about some misadventures with self-shamanism. He goes on to suggest that having some stupidity in your songs “helps the souffle rise”, and jokes about being recently taken with a Shania Twain documentary and the little comments she makes in some of her hit songs.

Father John Misty

Misty says his infectious 2016 hit “Real Love Baby” was a songwriting exercise on Ecstasy, “in a controlled environment” and that the song was rejected by Lady Gaga. He goes on to explain that the first part of “Pure Comedy” is from the perspective of a cavewoman and that the second part was written by aliens sent to decide if Earth should survive. The lyrics do go in that direction, with aliens justifiably wondering about the humans who “build fortunes poisoning their offspring” and wondering “where did they find these goons they elected to rule them?” Father John Misty shouldn’t worry about losing his muse, as there are few songwriters in modern music who can rival his insightful commentary on the bizarre contradictions of the modern age.

Top 10 Journey Songs

the journey summit song

From the ashes of Santana and Frumious Bandersnatch born this beast of a band in San Francisco in 1973. Full of artistic ups and downs, Journey’s strongest times were between 78′ and 87′ when Steve Perry was the lead vocalist.

For some of us, they are the band that wrote “that song from 80’s movies(Song #3),” and for some of us, they’re the summit of our teenage years. Let’s take a look at the top 10 songs of this amazing band!

Table of Contents

1. In My Lonely Feeling / Conversations

Released in one of their earliest albums ‘Journey’, the band influenced by the psychedelic feels of their previous bands, decided to take on a memorable riff that has you bobbing your head for days.

Here’s a link to the performance at Winterland:

2. Nickel & Dime

Journey got you covered with this 1977 instrumental, this track is filled with energy and real rock n’ roll. A classic hit from their third album that cannot be skipped!

Here’s a link to the instrumental:

3. Look Into The Future

We all like to reminiscence every now and then, or ‘reflect’ for those that don’t want to admit it. With all their emotions literally felt through the song, this song is probably the best option for a get together.

Here’s a link to the winner of the list:

4. It’s All Too Much

It’s summer, burgers are nearly done and in the meanwhile you’re nibbling on chips whilst you’re trying to dance in a socially acceptable manner. You just can’t help but shake it with this song!

Here’s a link to the track:

Released in their third album, this song meets the criteria of ‘I want a song that’s perfect start to my drive’.

Here’s a link to your new Sing-A-Long track:

6. Sweet & Simple

I mean, the song is sweet and simple…

Here’s a link to something that will have you in your feels:

7. Natural Thing

Soulful & genuine, the vocals alone will have you in a trance for the whole 3 mins.

Here’s a link to that long needed shower song:

Compared to the likes of Hendrix, this rockin’ piece will help you move on and let go of whatever it is that made you want to listen to this in the first place.

Here’s a link:

9. Any Way You Want It

This opening track of Departure is an immense, energy-filled, good vibes track. It is usually used as the last song on any Journey show. Finishing in a  high tune like that is an experience that sticks in a good way. If you haven’t heard this song in 2010 during the heavily saturated world of Glee advertisements everywhere on your screen, then you’re quite lucky.

Here’s a link to probably one of the second most famous Journey songs:

10. Keep on Runnin’

You’re missing out on that Journey tribute that’s going on in town? Don’t fret, this performance will have you feeling like you’re back in 1981!

Here’s a link to the song:

11. Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’

From the romantic mind of Perry, this extremely personal song about a relationship (which is believed to be inspired by true events) was the band’s first song to break into the Billboard top twenty, and It peaked at number 16.

12. Only The Young

As you can guess from the title, this song is about the infinite promise and freedom of youth. Unfortunately, there’s a sad story about this song; this song was played to a 16-year-old fan with cystic fibrosis as part of a request from Make a Wish Foundation. Unfortunately, the fan died a day later, leaving the band with a broken heart.

13. Wheel In the Sky

Started slowly by peaking at number 57 in the US – this song has gone on to become one of the strong Journey classics.

14. Lights

One of the first Journey songs featuring Steve Parry, this one also started as a minor hit (#68 on charts) but became one of the signature songs.

15. Who’s Crying

This soulful piece is Dressed in a beautiful piano riff. It is one of the most successful songs of the band. Peking at #4 in the US and becoming the highest UK charting Journey single at the time.

16. Open Arms

This track is also one of the most successful songs of the band, earning them their highest position on the Billboard 100 (#2). Song was introduced to a wider and more contemporary audience by becoming a staple of many pop artists’ covers, including Mariah Carey.

17. Faithfully

One of the most powerful Journey songs. Written by Jonathan Cain on the road and was completed very quickly (which the religious Cain puts down to divine intervention).

18. Separate Ways

The song tells the story of a couple who have broken up and gone their separate ways but will still always share a connection because of the time they spent together. As some of us know as ” that song from the 80s’ movies.”

19. Don’t Stop Believin’

The most iconic song of this band. This amazing song taken from 1981’s Escape is one of the most anthem-like catchy rock songs of all time.

About TOTO:

The members of TOTO are celebrating an accomplishment few bands have achieved in the modern era. Cumulative streams of the ensemble’s repertoire now exceed 3 billion plays. Amongst the most listened-to recordings, “Africa” accounts for over one billion streams at Spotify alone. This year the song was recertified by the RIAA 8X Platinum. Over the past decade, the band has had a major renaissance in popularity like few bands at this point in their career. The audience is truly multi-generational, becoming younger with each passing year. Joining Steve Lukather and Joseph Williams are band members bassist John Pierce (Huey Lewis and The News), drummer Robert “Sput” Searight (Ghost-Note, Founding member Snarky Puppy, Snoop Dogg), keyboardist Dominique “Xavier” Taplin (Prince, Ghost-Note), multi-instrumentalist / vocalist Warren Ham (Ringo Starr) and keyboardist / background vocalist Steve Maggiora, This line-up marks the fifteenth incarnation of Toto in consideration of band members or side men who joined or exited. Individually and collectively, few have had a larger imprint on pop culture than the members of TOTO. The family tree can be heard on an astonishing 5000 albums that together amass a sales history of a half a billion albums. Amongst these recordings, NARAS applauded the performances with hundreds of Grammy nominations. With now 45+ years together and literally thousands of credits, including the biggest-selling album of all time: Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and accolades to their names, TOTO remains one of the top-selling touring and recording acts in the world. They are the benchmark by which many artists base their sound and production, and they continue to transcend the standards set by the entire music community, being simply synonymous with musical credibility. They are pop culture and are one of the few 70’s bands that have endured the changing trends and styles continuing to remain relevant.

Sure, "Don't Stop Believin'" -- but there's a whole lot more.

Journey

Though it arrives amidst lawsuits , social media sniping and infighting, Journey is turning 50 this year.

During that half century, the group has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, logging 11 platinum-or-better albums (including Diamond certifications for 1981’s Escape and 1988’s Greatest Hits) , earning eight top 10 albums on the Billboard 200 and 25 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. It’s also been a reliable ticket-selling act for most of its career, and in 2017, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Journey’s is the story of eras. When the group originally formed in San Francisco in 1973, original manager Herbie Herbert helped bring together guitarist Neal Schon and keyboard player/vocalist Gregg Rolie from Santana, bassist Ross Valory and rhythm guitarist George Tickner from Frumious Bandersnatch and drummer Prairie Prince from The Tubes. Prince would be replaced by David Bowie/Frank Zappa skins man Aynsley Dunbar, while Tickner would leave after Journey’s self-titled first album in 1975. The remaining quartet recorded two more albums before Steve Perry came on board for 1978’s Infinity, which began the band’s run of multi-platinum smashes — also marking the first appearance of Alton Kelley and Stanley Mouse’s iconic scarab logo for the band. Dunbar was replaced by Steve Smith for 1979’s Evolution , and Rolie would leave in 1980 with Jonathan Cain of The Babys joining to help elevate the band to even greater fortunes on Escape and Frontiers .

The palette has been diverse, but there are common elements among Journey’s best songs — sturdy melodies and sing-along choruses, usually leading into one of Schon’s majestic guitar solos. But within that mold there’s also been plenty of invention and clever arrangements that have never been as formulaic as some of the band’s detractors (particularly during their early ‘80s heyday) would have you believe.

Journey has gone through its fair share of lineups, with singer Arnel Pineda on board since 2007 — the longest continuous tenure of any Journey frontman. The group released Freedom , it’s first new studio album in 11 years, in 2022, and despite the current legal fractures (which you can read about in detail here ), still they ride, as the Escape track says — and may they keep on runnin’ for a long time.

With all that in mind, here are our picks for Journey’s 10 best songs — not all of which come from the biggest hits.

"Someday Soon" ( Departure , 1980)

This album track from Rolie’s finally studio effort with the band is a hypnotic tone poem, with a ringing, cushy ambience and a hippie kind of optimism – not to mention the best give-and-take Perry and Rolie achieved during their time together in the band. It’s of course been eclipsed by Journey’s myriad hits (“Any Way You Want It” is the enduring top 40 Hot 100 hit from Departure ), but it’s a gem worthy of discovery.  Listen here.

"Escape" ( Escape , 1981)

The title track from Journey’s Billboard 200-topping studio album straddled the hard rock/pomp attack of the group’s mid-‘70s output with the melodic sensibility of the Perry-Cain axis. Its five-minute length provides room for the arrangement to stretch out and flow from one song part to the next, with a crunch that was part of Journey’s palette at the time. Listen here.

"Of a Lifetime" ( Journey , 1975)

The Journey of 1973-77 was certainly a different creature than the hitmaking colossus so many know and love. The group’s initial lineups flexed instrumental muscles, smoothly knitting together a number of styles more interested in the journey (ba- dum ) than any commercial destination. The first track from its first album is a prototype, leaning into blues, psychedelic rock and a touch of Latin, with the first of what would become many standout Schon solos, and a tuneful sturdiness delivered by Rolie’s soulful vocal. Listen here.

"Faithfully" (Frontiers , 1983)

Journey "Faithfully"

The melody of this top 20 Hot 100 hit came to Cain in a dream on a tour bus, and his paean to the struggle between home and the road was written in a half-hour. The result was a swoon-inducing ballad tailor-made for a sea of lighters (back then) and cellphone flashlights (now), capturing one of Perry’s best recorded performances and one of Schon’s most inspired solos. One of its great side stories is that Prince contacted Cain after he wrote “Purple Rain,” concerned that it might be too similar to “Faithfully.” Cain determined it wasn’t, but joked to Billboard that, “After seeing what it became, I should have asked for a couple of points….”

"Ask the Lonely" (single, 1983)

Recorded for Frontiers , this one wound up in the romcom Two of a Kind (starring the Grease duo of John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John) and rocked its way to No. 3 on the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart. Like “Only the Young,” which wound up in Vision Quest two years later, it showed that Journey was on roll – and well-suited for big soundtrack moments. Listen here.

"Who's Crying Now" ( Escape, 1981)

The best of Journey’s swoon songs — started by Perry while driving into Los Angeles and finished with Cain — has a subtlety and dynamic build that sets it apart from the many others of its ilk they’d create. The verse slips into the chorus with a soulful ease, and Schon’s guitar accents deftly build up to his searing solo at the end. The Escape single reached No. 4 on the Hot 100. Listen here.

"Feeling That Way" ( Infinity , 1978)

If fans at the time wondered how Steve Perry and Gregg Rolie would co-exist, this was the answer — an ebb-and-flow tradeoff that proved they could complement each other as lead singers as well as harmonize smoothly together (first evidenced by Infinity ‘s lead track “Lights”). Its medley-like pairing with the next track, “Anytime,” was gravy that would become a motif on the next few Journey albums. Listen here.

"Just the Same Way" ( Evolution , 1979)

Journey’s fifth album had a punchier sound than Infinity — though they shared producer Roy Thomas Baker — which worked to the benefit of the album’s first single. Led by Rolie’s piano and muscular lead vocal, with Perry responding on the choruses and bridge, it reached No. 58 on the Hot 100 in 1979. In a perfect world this would have been as big as anything from Escape or Frontiers, but it’s still a convincing introduction to the Rolie era of the band. Listen here.

"Don't Stop Believin'" ( Escape , 1981)

Journey "Don't Stop Believin'" (Live 1981: Escape Tour - 2022 HD Remaster)

More than a billion Spotify streams, a Library of Congress National Recording Registry placement and plays at virtually every sporting event around the world don’t lie — this one is Journey’s pinnacle of success. Created during a rehearsal at the group’s warehouse HQ in Oakland, Calif., it gave us the “streetlight people” of Hollywood’s Sunset Strip and put the non-existent South Detroit on the map. And it saves the chorus for the song’s end, after the guitar solo. A cross-generational hit? Believe it, gleefully.

"Stone in Love" ( Escape , 1981)

Schon reportedly called this “Stoned in Love” when he wrote the riff, and it’s certainly an addictive track that’s the best roll-down-the-windows-and-crank-it-up Journey fix you could ask for — not to mention a frequent show opener. A No. 13 Mainstream Rock Airplay hit in 1981, the song is practically a deep cut today. But its anthemic chorus is a spirit-lifter and the dynamic breakdown that segues into the song-closing guitar solo harks back to the ambitious musicality of the first few albums. “Stone” is a gem that still shines bright. Listen here.

Summit Pins - All Levels

The Summit Award for all of the levels was never updated as new Journeys were introduced. Initially, there were only three journeys for each level and you had to complete each of them to earn the Summit Pin for that level. Since then, there have been an additional 4 journeys introduced at each level, and you can earn any combination of three out of the seven in order to earn the summit pin. They can of course also be completed independently. Can the Summit pin requirements be updated to include the four additional journeys, which should be update in both locations when entered either under the summit heading or the individual journey. (On a side note, it would be nice if the Outdoor journey could be tied to the individual badge completions and update automatically there instead of having to track when a girl has completed all 2/3 badges and update an achievement.)

Here are the journeys for reference - as noted in previous posts, there is not a consistent entry on how the requirements are listed for the similar journeys at each level.

Hi @MegJakubik ,

What year were these updated? That way when I create the new updated badge I can put a year on it to differentiate between the old and the new ones.

Let me know, and I can start putting these in for you!

David Keener TroopTrack

They aren’t updated or changed badges, they just aren’t entered consistently in all of the levels. The only thing that is “changed” is the expansion of the summit pin to accept any 3 journeys out of the 7 available at each level. And that happened once they new journeys were released.

So these are all summit awards for the different levels that need to be updated/made to match to these requirements then? And the summit award is one award correct? Like for example the “Daisy” would need to complete all those 5 flowers, between earth and sky etc to earn the summit award?

I’m not familiar with Girl Scouts so I’m sorry for all the questions. I’m understanding what you’re saying more but just want to get it all correct when correcting these awards so I don’t cause a new issue for everyone.

For each level, a girl has the opportunity to earn each of the seven journeys for that level (i.e. Daisy, Brownie, Junior, Cadette, Senior, and Ambassador). While the journeys are listed under their respective levels, how the requirements are listed in the badge book vary. For example some just have Think Like an Engineer as a single requirement. Some would have a check for the individual component projects and a requirement for the Take Action project. My point in writing out the requirements as I did was hopefully to get some consistency on how they are listed in the badge book. For instance, since my troop worked on the Junior Think Like An Engineer over multiple meetings, I couldn’t record the projects completed based on attendance since it wasn’t split out as an option. That means I’m tracking it offline so that I can let those that want to make up the journey know what they are missing instead of them being able to check their badge book independently.

For the summit pins - The pins themselves are only earned through the completion of three of the respective level journeys. It can be earned once each level. When they were initially released, there were only 3 journeys per level. Those are the ones that are listed as the requirements in troop track currently. Since that time, there have been 4 journeys added per level. Now to earn the pin, a girl only needs to complete any 3 journeys out of the seven. For example, while my daughter did earn the traditional journeys of Get Moving and Amuse, her third journey was the newer Outdoor Journey. In order to document the summit pin, I had to use the override completed date in recording the progress to document. But it also means I have to check each girls individual progress to count journeys to see when they have earned summit. The summit pin in dependent on the tracking of the stand alone journeys. It would be nice if the requirements for the journey components/summit progress were linked so that they could be entered in either place (either under the journey requirements or under the summit pin).

I’m also happy to speak with you to try to clarify this as I know it’s confusing.

Okay I get it! Previously there were 3 requirements (things they could do) for the Summit Pin, and now there are seven, so those extra 4 requirements need to be added. But when those are added they still only need 3 to complete the award, the girls basically just have more options.

I can definitely get those added for you. Thank you for your patience in this matter, and for your explanation. I know that probably took a little while to write out.

I will see if it’s possible that both can be updated together, however; I know that currently that’s not the case. Whenever awards are added they’re seen as separate inside the TroopTrack system.

If I’m still not getting this you can call us at:

Customer Support 385-208-4352 Mon - Thur: 9:00 - 5:00 MST Closed on Weekends

Thanks again,

I have added those awards in as new updated awards. This way girls who have already earned them don’t get those taken off in the TroopTrack system.

To me it seems redundant to put all the Journey requirements into the Summit Pins. Perhaps if nobody has used the updated ones yet, they could be changed to just list the names of the Journeys and not all the requirements.

I’m open to other ideas, but wanted to share my thoughts on this.

If they requirements can’t update simultaneously, that is actually a better option.

@Keener-Trooptrack , any update on this? The request is to reduce the requirements of the Summit Awards to:

Complete 3 of the following Leadership Journeys:

  • It’s Your World, Change It (Journey has a different name at each level)
  • It’s Your Planet, Love It (Journey has a different name at each level)
  • It’s Your Story, Tell It (Journey has a different name at each level)
  • Outdoor Journey
  • Think Like a Citizen Scientist
  • Think Like an Engineer
  • Think Like a Programmer

Since the requirements can’t be updated simultaneously, this is actually the best solution.

@Keener-Trooptrack , I noticed that the Journey Summit Awards have been updated according to the original suggestion, rather than the consensus recommendation. Is there any way we can get the simplified requirements on the Journey Summit Awards?

I have a corollary request for the “Think Like a…” badge requirements to be listed under the “Think Like a…” badges. I currently have three levels of girls (Daisy, Brownie, and Junior) earning their Think Like a Citizen Scientist badges; and I can’t enter the progress for any of them. I’m currently keeping track of it on a separate sheet.

Ping… This is still an issue. The current entries make these awards very difficult for leaders and parents to track.

Donna Kelce is in her Swiftie era. Travis Kelce 's mom is sharing her review of Taylor Swift 's new album, The Tortured Poets Department , and responding to questions about the songs fans suspect may have been written about her son .

"I listened to the whole album, and I listened to it all morning long when it was released," Donna told People   at QVC's The Age of Possibility summit in Las Vegas on Wednesday.

"I was just very impressed," she added. "She is a very talented woman, and I think it is probably her best work."

Donna also spoke with Us  Weekly   at the event, telling the outlet she planned to connect with Taylor to talk about the music.

Swift surprised fans on Friday with a double album drop, releasing 31 brand-new tracks. Listeners were quick to zero in on two new love songs, " The Alchemy " and " So High School ," which many believe are odes to her relationship with the Kansas City Chiefs tight end.

In signature Swift style, the album is also chock full of heartbreaking songs -- including  "So Long, London " and "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived" -- which are rumored to be about her previous relationships with  Joe Alwyn  and  Matty Healy . She also dropped a diss track titled " thanK you aIMee ," which had fans  rehashing her years-old feud  with  Kim Kardashian  due to the obvious capitalization spelling "KIM" in the title.

"Expressing herself through her music has always been therapeutic for Taylor," ET's source said. "It gives an outlet to move forward, feel empowered and turn her experiences into art."

The album is already on its way to a historic debut , reportedly selling 1.4 million copies in its first day alone. On Wednesday, Spotify announced that the album had surpassed 1 billion streams since its release.

Jon Bon Jovi Weighs Touring Future After Vocal Cord Surgery: ‘I Won’t Present Anything Less Than 102%’

“I’ve had a great life and I’ll still make records and still write songs. I intend to be the best version of me in 2024,” the rock and roll icon tells TheWrap

the journey summit song

In celebration of Bon Jovi’s 40th anniversary, Hulu is taking fans behind the scenes in a new four-part docuseries that charts the iconic rock and roll band’s rise to fame.

In addition to reliving the group’s triumphs and setbacks, greatest hits, biggest disappointments and most public moments of friction, “Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story” follows the band on tour in February 2022 as they attempt to chart out their future. The docuseries includes 40 years’ worth of personal videos, unreleased early demos, original lyrics and never before seen photos that chronicle their journey from Jersey Shore Clubs to the biggest stages on the planet.

“The look back is a celebration more than it is a discovery,” Jon Bon Jovi told TheWrap in an interview at the Television Critics Association Winter press tour in February. “I do recollect the journey and not all of it has been pretty. But it’s the truth and I’m glad [director Gotham Chopra] was able to capture that.”

One of the major topics covered in the docuseries is the vocal cord surgery the singer underwent in 2022. Bon Jovi said he’s aiming to get back into the full swing of performing in the fall and that he’s hoping to eventually do another tour.

“I won’t present anything less than 102%. I’m working very hard on it on a daily basis and I’m not even ashamed to tell everybody this truth,” he emphasized. “I’m not Superman, it’s a hard slog to expect that of you. But I won’t ever be the fat Elvis, you’re just not going to see that unless I go out there and I’m great. I’ve had a great life and I’ll still make records and still write songs. I intend to be the best version of me in 2024.”

Check out the rest of the conversation with Jon Bon Jovi and Gotham Chopra, below.

Jon Bon Jovi

TheWrap: During your panel, you talked about how the project started out as a look back that went through the ups and downs of the band, but later evolved to include following the group in real time. When did you realize that it was going to be bigger than you initially anticipated?

Gotham Chopra: I think the process of making these things is they call it unscripted for a reason and the story starts to tell you what it wants to be. You have a vision and intent at the beginning. But I mean, there’s just so much there, so there’s probably a whole shadow version that we could do but you have to make choices.

That real-time thread was really dramatic. It was telling itself as we went forward. So we were working on two different planes and had an amazing creative team and this incredible editor piecing it together the whole way. Originally, we were talking about there are four decades, so that became an organizing principle. But over time, you could start to see the ebbs and flows in those 40 years that made sense to build around.

What influence did growing up in New Jersey have on your career? How does it feel knowing you helped pave the way for artists in the state?

Jon Bon Jovi: Frank Sinatra paved the way before any of us did, right? Frankie Valli did it between Sinatra and Bruce Springsteen. As far as rock and roll, it was Bruce obviously, and to a lesser degree, but nonetheless, Southside Johnny and then I’m after that.

But here’s how I think of New Jersey: That was our breeding ground, it was the place where we are from and I wouldn’t have changed that for anything. It defines who I am as a man. We grew up in the shadow of the great New York City. But it was the shadow, it was an hour and a half away. You could take your dreams when they were fully baked to Manhattan for presentation, but they were carved out of the stones in New Jersey and that was a benefit to us.

In my era, it was also beneficial that 18 was the drinking age. This is integral because at 16, I could slip into a bar and learn how to play and perform without the responsibility of a day job or a college career yet. So you could start to piece this puzzle together because that drinking age didn’t change until after I was of age. So all of those things were instrumental for who and what we were to become.

Bon Jovi backstage at the Monsters of Rock Festival

What was the most challenging song for you to write?

Bon Jovi: Every record has its challenges because you want to put your best foot forward on every record. And when you do finally finish it, you never leave that record and say, ‘Oh, I could have done better.’ In and of that moment, at least on the day that you turn it in, you say, ‘That’s the best work I could do at this time.’ Every one of them has its challenges, but the process should be a struggle. If it was easy, everyone would do it. You’ve got to get it right and that’s part of the artist’s struggle.

Did going on tour post-COVID change the way you view performing?

Bon Jovi: It didn’t. The only thing that benefitted us was that it was a quieter backstage. But when you’re out on the stage, it was the show. So the rest of it was the norm. COVID was a crazy time for the entire planet. It’s one experience in our lifetimes that no matter who you are experienced together. I was able to write about some of that on the album in 2020. Fortunately, for the planet, it’s all behind us. We can move on from it and you write the next record. But COVID, other than that, didn’t shape where I am today.

Megan Thee Stallion

You’ve mostly worked on projects related to sports, but you also love music and have previously worked with Wiz Khalifa. How do you find musicians that you want to work with?

Chopra: Jon in a way found me and then we got deeper into this, but I have been very focused on sports. I would say now I’ve got the bug, but this is a pretty high bar to me. But I don’t know that it’s athletes or musicians, it’s stories. It’s storytelling. Underneath the rock star there’s a human being and that amazing backstory. It was really this current story that’s very relatable. That’s the thing I think hopefully elevates this and separates it from a lot of what’s out there, and that’s what I found in athletes.

The greatest compliment usually is, ‘Oh, I’m not a fan of the Patriots, but I watched that thing and I really liked it. Maybe Bon Jovi is not my favorite rock star of all time, but I’ve got to watch that thing.’ And I was inspired, I was really there for the ride.

Music is a great, vibrant, exciting, dramatic world and you have a band with a 40-year history. I think one of the things he says in one of his interviews is marriages, divorces, births, deaths: That’s the scope of this thing. It was just so exciting and that’s what made it exciting. I’m sure there’ll be other projects, but its going to be hard to hit this bar.

What was the biggest challenge for you shaping this story?

Chopra: It’s a band with a lot of different characters and voices and not all of them line up because it’s a lot of time, so everyone’s recollection of what happened is different and it’s so emotional. You want to tell that truth, but the truth can be different to people. So you want to honor all of it but also find it and that’s an exploration, but it’s fun.

It’s also not just voices, but it’s different life experiences. Dave [Bryan] and Tico [Torres] have such different personalities and they were there pretty much at the beginning. So it’s really feeling your way out. It’s understanding the backstories even how they came into the band. It was beautiful in a way. Richie [Sambora] was there at the beginning and had an incredible role to play in the formation of the band, but he hasn’t been there for a long time. So it was just weaving that all together and finding the threads that meet up.

I love non-scripted because there’s something really pure about it and you’re discovering it. What I remember from those first days is we shot the tour in April of 2021, I guess. It was right at the beginning. I barely knew Jon and I was on the road and it was COVID and it was just pretty tense and Jon was going through it at that point. And now I look back and I feel like the relationship we’ve built, the relationship with the band is so radically different. It’s a radically different feeling, but it’s a discovery and that’s actually the best part.

What do you hope new artists can take away and learn from your career and this docuseries?

Bon Jovi: Stay true to who and what you are. You can grow with your public and that’s all good. You don’t have to try to hold on to what was then because if you’re blessed enough to have been around for 40 years, hopefully, you’ve changed, you’ve matured. Anyone that would expect us to rewrite ‘You Give Love a Bad Name,’ they should be thinking about that before just saying that because you should change in 40 years.

So I would tell any new artists today to be true to who and what they are. Because if you have success, I pray that you’re blessed enough to have the opportunity to sing that song in 40 years. But don’t sing something that isn’t true to who and what you are, because your audience will allow you to grow. But just be sure that you tell your truth.

Minnesota Vikings

Subscriber only, minnesota vikings | the incredible journey that led cornerback khyree jackson to the vikings, after almost giving up football for good, jackson was selected by the vikings with the no. 108 pick in the 2024 nfl draft..

A football player in a green jersey

In an alternate universe, Khyree Jackson might be working as a manager at the local grocery store, or maybe playing video games professionally as a member of the NBA 2K League.

Seriously. Both options were on the table when he stepped away from football as a teenager.

Eventually, Jackson returned to the game he loved, parlaying his undying determination into an opportunity to play at the highest level  The cornerback was officially rewarded for his hard work on Saturday when the Vikings selected him with the No. 108 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

He wouldn’t change his journey for the world.

“I feel like it taught me a lot of perseverance,” Jackson said. “It helped turn me into the man that I am today.”

After signing to play at Arizona Western College, Jackson dropped out before playing a single snap. He secretly returned to his hometown of Upper Marlboro, Md., picked up a job behind the deli counter at the nearby Harris Teeter, and played NBA 2K to pass the time. He told his friends he was still in school.

“Nobody knew,” Jackson said. “It was kind of eating away at me.”

He finally came clean to his friends and realized the embarrassment he was feeling was a big enough reason to give football another shot. Though he still proudly flaunts the time he was named Employee of the Month at Harris Teeter, and he claims he got so good at NBA 2K that he legitimately could have gone pro, Jackson couldn’t escape the gravitational pull football still had on his life.

It started with Jackson attending Fort Scott Community College in Kansas, where he initially played wide receiver. After earning the trust of the coaching staff, Jackson asked if he could switch to cornerback. He felt that position change would put him on the best path to advance his career.

“I felt like at cornerback at least I can kind of control my own destiny,” Jackson said. “That’s why I ended up switching.”

After transferring to East Mississippi Community College as a top recruit, Jackson arrived on campus only to have things canceled due to COVID. He wound up at Alabama the following year playing under legendary head coach Nick Saban before transferring once more, to Oregon.

That’s where everything started to click for Jackson. He credited head coach Dan Lanning for helping him thrive at Oregon. He was able to play with a ton of freedom while starting 12 games and finished with 34 tackles, two sacks, three interceptions and seven pass break ups on his way to being named First Team All-Pac 12.

That performance earned Jackson an invite to the Senior Bowl, where he got to meet with the Vikings. He had a message for defensive coordinator Brian Flores, defensive backs coach Daronte Jones and anybody else who would listen.

“I told them I was the best cornerback in the draft and I thought they were probably going to be getting me for cheaper because of some of the politics that go into it,” Jackson said. “Just being honest. I felt confident in my ability. The numbers spoke for themselves.”

Now he’s on an NFL roster, and bringing that same level of confidence with him.

“I watch a lot of the names that called before me recently in this draft.” Jackson said. “Maybe it shouldn’t have went like that.”

As much as he’s looking forward to getting the last laugh after so many teams passed on him, Jackson was feeling gratitude more than anything else after getting the call from the Vikings.

“Honestly, I wasn’t even at home,” Jackson said with a laugh. “I was at the mall.”

Either way, it was fitting that Jackson was back in his hometown for the occasion. He returned there when he almost gave up football for good. It’s only right that he was also there when his childhood dream came true.

“I missed the first call, and then my phone rang again and I picked it up and it was the Vikings,” Jackson said. “I told the lady in the store, I was like, ‘Well, I’ve got go.’ ”

He had some celebrating to do.
