B2K Adds Career-High $5M to The Millennium Tour

B2K is back on the road, headlining The Millennium Tour, alongside Mario , Ying Yang Twins , Chingy , Pretty Ricky , Bobby V and Lloyd . The tour impacts the Hot Tours tally dated April 27, 2019, at No. 2 with performances at The Forum in Inglewood, Calif. (April 13-14), State Farm Arena in Atlanta (April 4-5), and Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif. (April 12). According to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore, the tour grossed $2.2 million, $1.7 million and $1.2 million, respectively, combining for $5 million earned and 56,542 tickets sold.

These three engagements are, quite simply, the biggest of B2K’s career. They are the three highest-grossing and most-attended engagements for the reunited foursome and mark B2K’s first appearances in the top 20 of the Boxscore chart .

Pink Turns 'Trauma' Into Triumph With the Top Grossing Tour of March

In all, The Millennium Tour has grossed $6.7 million from its first eight reports, already outperforming their last headlining jaunt, the Scream III Tour in 2003 ($4.7 million; 22 shows). While the latest recap reflects five sold-out arena dates, the Scream III Tour sold out two of its 22 shows. B2K’s recent earnings at The Forum represent a stunning 618% growth over the $351,000 they grossed at the same venue in 2003. The Scream III Tour similarly earned $370,000 in Atlanta and $338,000 in Oakland, small fractions of their 2019 grosses at the same venues.

These record grosses for B2K are perfectly timed as the nostalgia train rolls into the 2000s. On the heels of bolstered figures for ’80s heroes New Kids on the Block and ’90s phenomenon Backstreet Boys , B2K is leading the charge with a host of other early-to-mid-2000s R&B/hip-hop acts, back on the road after a long hiatus. Like The Millennium Tour, NKOTB found the biggest gross of their career deep into their reunion, earning $2.9 million at Boston’s Fenway Park on July 8, 2017 — nearly 30 years after their Billboard Hot 100 debut, and almost 25 years after splitting up in 1994.

The 10 Greatest Boy Band Videos of the TRL Era

B2K also owes some of their re-energized success to the ever-growing ticketing market across the touring circuit and changing demographics of their fanbase. Playing to a generally young audience, tickets mostly topped out at $40 for 2003’s Scream III Tour. Sixteen years later, they’ve scaled to be more elastic, as their fans grow with more disposable income. In an era of meet & greet packages, album and merch bundles, and other VIP add-ons, The Millennium Tour has tickets set at $45.50 on the low end, scaling up to $150 and beyond.

The Millennium Tour will continue before closing May 26 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Elsewhere on this week’s recap, Justin Timberlake wraps the Man of the Woods Tour , Billy Joel continues his residency at Madison Square Garden , and Pink soldiers on through the second North American leg of the Beautiful Trauma Tour . See below for the full tally.

Why The Millennium Tour Matters in 2019

BBMak, B2K, Avril Lavigne, Backstreet Boys—lately it feels like every turn-of-the-century act is hopping aboard the Y2K-nostalgia train

No, your G-SHOCK isn't malfunctioning: We're smack dab in the middle of a turn-of-the-millennium nostalgia-fest.

You don't have to search high and low to find proof—just turn on your TV, where Chance the Rapper can be seen hamming it up with the Backstreet Boys while shilling for Doritos. Or look at the top of the pop charts, where the boy-now-man band recently resided with their ninth studio album,  DNA , their first #1 on the Billboard 200 in nearly 20 years. Avril Lavigne's back too , with a new generation of indie scions claiming her as influence —and even pop artists who were barely in baby Jncos are toasting the time period. "1999," last year's retro-tastic single and video from Charli XCX (age: 26) and Troye Sivan (age: 22), was loaded with enough charmingly dated pop culture references to fill an entire bottle of Surge.

        View this post on Instagram                   #TheMillenniumTour #B2K #Omarion #Boog #Fizz #RazB A post shared by B2K Official Page (@b2k) on Jan 2, 2019 at 8:30pm PST

If there's one thing you can typically count on the music industry for, it's finding ways to monetize overarching societal trends relevant to popular culture. Beyond the third-gen legacy-relaunches of BSB and Lavigne's respective careers, the touring industry is starting to find a market in mining this nostalgic ore; music festivals have occasionally popped up to celebrate this era (as well as, somewhat alarmingly, more current eras ), and even bands with just one or two hits in their entire careers are hitting the road with little else to promote . To wit: at the top of March, The Millennium Tour starts making its way through North America, a two-month jaunt toplined by R&B outfit B2K —marking their reunion after 15 years of inactivity—as well as support acts and '00s R&B and hip-hop fixtures ranging from Pretty Ricky and Chingy to Lloyd and Ying Yang Twins.

The title of the tour itself contains multitudes; for one, it gestures towards the meaning behind the headliners' names, "B2K" standing as shorthand for "Boys of the millennium"—itself referencing the simple fact that the band was formed and at the peak of activity during the turn of the new millennium itself. But the word "Millennium," which most targeted consumers readily associated with the mega-successful 1999 Backstreet Boys album of the same name—is also meant to trigger a response in our collective frontal lobe bolstered by the other '00s-centric names on the bill: remember when this was the music of our lives?

Of course, the question of what "legacy" constitutes in situations like these—tour packages and, more broadly, pop-cultural events intended to reconstitute and re-canonize entire career arcs—is ever present. The original lifespan of B2K—specifically, Omarion, Lil' Fizz, Raz-B, and J-Boog—was shorter than most trampled-upon insects, with two albums released in the same year that eventually went platinum and a one-week stay at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 with the Diddy -featuring "Bump, Bump, Bump." Since group Svengali and record producer Chris Stokes announced the group's split in 2004, he's addressed sexual molestation allegations from several of B2K's members; along with maintaining a solo career since the band breakup, Omarion appeared on several seasons of Love & Hip-Hop Hollywood in 2014, one of his plotlines centering around a potential B2K sorta-reunion with Boog that would've also welcomed Ray-J into the group's ranks.

<iframe width="620" height="349" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/CgiX53hjAPc" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

As for the support acts: after spending most of the decade operating sporadically, St. Louis spitter Chingy recently re-signed under the Universal umbrella for the third time in his career, and Miami R&B group Pretty Ricky haven't released an album in 11 years. New Orleans crooner Lloyd returned last year with the Lil Wayne -featuring TRU LP , his first album in seven years; Jackson, Miss. singer/songwriter Bobby V (more widely known as Bobby Valentino) has kept a relatively low profile throughout the 2010s, and Atlanta rap duo Ying Yang Twins more or less dropped off the face of the earth save for the occasional mixtape appearance. In all of these acts' collective heyday, only B2K managed a chart-topping single. To the casual observer, the question might arise: Why is this tour even happening?

Again, nostalgia comes into play here. The Bush II era might've been bad, but many (rightly or not) consider the Trump era to be far worse, and it's impossibly easy to imagine potential ticket-buyers of a certain age immersing themselves in warm, fuzzy musical memories from either side of the 9/11 divide—regardless of how cherished those memories actually were in the moment—simply to forget about the present for a few hours. There are worse ways of doing so than spending a night out with your friends at a concert!

The Bush II era might've been bad, but many (rightly or not) consider the Trump era to be far worse, and it's impossibly easy to imagine potential ticket-buyers of a certain age immersing themselves in warm, fuzzy musical memories from either side of the 9/11 divide.

The presumed audience for events like these weren't old enough to drink during these acts' salad days, but they sure are now, which makes for another revenue stream appealing to the concert industry at large. Also, tours like these (along with era-spanning compilations that are less common in the streaming era) have happened for decades, excavating aging hair-rockers and '90s alt-rockers alike for the sake of an easy profit; enough time simply has passed that it's the late-'90s-to-mid-'00s' turn now. This is simply how things work, and how they'll continue to work as long as the music industry itself exists.

But there’s another, more genre-specific element of the nostalgia that surrounds the Millenium Tour, too. Of all the sounds and subgenres that make up mainstream pop as we know it, R&B and hip-hop are by far the most rapidly changing and trend-reliant. By the time you’ve heard the "new" sound, it’s likely already a little old, which means that the sounds of 10 or 20 years ago might as well been from the Stone Age. For some listeners, the chore of keeping up can be exhausting and create fonder memories towards the past by sheer virtue of familiarity. This is an undoubtable boon to the musicians from that past, especially if they’ve found themselves in a position unable to monetize the present. By the end of the night, everyone at least appears happy—just like the good old days.

25 Years Of Backstreet Boys' "I Want It That Way": 10 Covers By Ed Sheeran, Lil Uzi Vert & More

To commemorate the anniversary of Backstreet Boys' biggest hit, take a look at 10 clever ways it's been covered and sampled — from Ed Sheeran's karaoke bit to a Weird Al special.

When the Backstreet Boys released "I Want It That Way" on April 12, 1999, they likely had no idea how beloved their smash hit would still be a quarter-century later.

Written by the Swedish powerhouse team of Andreas Carlsson and Max Martin , "I Want It That Way" is undoubtedly BSB's signature hit, particularly thanks to its memorable undulating melody and its long-debated cryptic meaning. But perhaps the most surprising part of the song's legacy is how it has resonated across genres — from a TikTok cover by Korn to a hip-hop sampling by Lil Uzi Vert .

As the Backstreet Boys celebrate the 25th anniversary of "I Want It That Way," take a look at how the song has been diversely covered, lovingly lampooned and karaoke jammed by an array of voices in the business.

Weird Al Yankovic (2003)

When the king of parody songs selects one to skewer, you know it's an iconic song. Weird Al Yankovic paid tribute to the largeness of the Backstreet Boys classic when he used "I Want It That Way" as the basis of a song called "eBay" in 2003.

Yankovic's chorus replaces the original's with, "A used pink bathrobe/ A rare mint snow globe/ A Smurf TV tray/ I bought on eBay." The Backstreet Boys send up appears on Yankovic's album Poodle Hat , which won Best Comedy Album at the 2004 GRAMMYs.

One Direction (2013)

Three years One Direction formed on "The X Factor," the five lads — Harry Styles , Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson — included a cover of "I Want It That Way" on their 2013 concert set lists, the young boy band paying homage to the ones that came before them. Though their English accents poked through at times, their version was loyal to the original, and got their crowds singing along.

"Glee" (2013)

Poking fun at the presumed rivalry between *NSYNC and Backstreet Boys, a medley of the former's "Bye Bye Bye" and "I Want It That Way" was featured in Season 4, Episode 16 of "Glee." In the episode — aptly titled "Feud" — choir director Mr. Schuester (Matthew Morrison) and glee club heartthrob Finn (Cory Monteith) face off in an epic boy band battle, which ultimately proved the groups' respective music was more cohesive than divisive.

Brittany Howard and Jim James (2016)

The lead singers of Alabama Shakes and My Morning Jacket covering a boy band classic. It doesn't sound real, but Brittany Howard and Jim James did just that in 2016 when they recorded "I Want It That Way" for an animated short cartoon called "A Love Story."

Released by the fast food chain Chipotle Mexican Grill, the clip was part of a creative campaign to showcase the company's focus on natural ingredients. Howard and James highlight the poignancy and versatility of the song by adding lush string arrangements and dramatic beats.

Backstreet Boys x Jimmy Fallon and The Roots (2018)

The 2018 live performance of "I Want It That Way" by the Backstreet Boys, Jimmy Fallon and The Roots for "The Tonight Show" is arguably the sweetest rendition of the song — and not just because they're using a mini xylophone, baby tambourine and other toy classroom instruments. It's even more endearing than the previous collaborations between Fallon and Backstreet Boys: a barbershop singing version of Sisqo's "Thong Song" and a "Bawkstreet Boys" version of "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)," with everyone dressed like fluffy birds.

The 1975 (2020)

British rockers The 1975 performed a fairly faithful cover of "I Want It That Way," hitting all the high notes at several of their 2023 world concert tour stops. But it's not the first time frontman Matty Healy has hinted at the Backstreet Boys' influence on his band: he told Pitchfork in 2020 that " College Dropout -era Kanye West meets Backstreet Boys" was part of their veritable moodboard at the time when working on their own song called "Tonight (I Wish I Was Your Boy)."

Lil Uzi Vert (2020)

In 2020, Lil Uzi Vert released a rap song called "That Way" that includes a refrain of "I want it that way" sung to the tune of the Backstreet original, but with an AutoTune twist. From there, the lyrics become quite a bit naughtier than anything the BSB guys have uttered in any song.

"I don't know how [the idea of] Backstreet Boys got involved in this song, I really don't," the song's producer Supah Mario told Splice at the time. "I think it was all Uzi. But it was a game changer."

The interpolation was so good, in fact, that Nick Carter even invited Lil Uzi Vert to collaborate: "Now you're gonna have to be featured on our next album bud," he tweeted upon the song's release.

Korn (2022)

Fans of Korn know that the nu metal band has a sense of humor, but few could've expected that Jonathan Davis and crew would post a TikTok of themselves singing "I Want It That Way" in 2022.

"I never wanna hear you say… 'Worst Is On Its Way,'" reads the caption on the post, a tongue-in-cheek reference to Korn's 2022 song of the same name.

Backstreet Boys responded on the app via a hilarious Duet video with Nick Carter. In the video, Carter — who sports fabulous metal eye makeup and a long silver wig — doesn't actually say or sing anything, he just drops his jaw in amazement.

Backstreet Boys x Downy (2022)

Downy hired the Backstreet Boys to poke fun at "I Want It That Way" with the now-viral "Tell Me Why" commercial in 2022. All five members — Nick Carter, Howie Dorough , Brian Littrell , AJ McLean and Kevin Richardson — appear as a Backstreet Boys poster on the wall that comes to life, using the "tell me why" hook of their hit to engage a woman doing laundry in a conversation about washing her clothes.

As Saatchi group account director Jen Brotman told Muse at the time, the nostalgic ad also spawned some memories for the folks working on the ad campaign.

"The moment [BSB] stood in front of the camera, they rehearsed 'I Want It That Way' just to get the notes right, and we felt like we were getting serenaded on set," Brotman recalled. "We couldn't believe how emotional we all got — there may or may not have been tears in some eyes. The song has always been a karaoke favorite of the team, so we knew which 'tell me whys' we wanted them to hit, and we still can't get it out of our heads."

Ed Sheeran (2023)

When he fancies singing a bit of karaoke, Ed Sheeran loves leaning on "I Want It That Way," as the star showed at his favorite Nashville bar in July 2023. A patron caught him on camera and his happiness level is undeniable when belting out this enduring pop classic.

As Sheeran told CBS News a few months later, he grew up on the pop hits of everyone from Backstreet Boys to Britney Spears . But what he said about "I Want It That Way" specifically may be the best way to describe its long-lasting impact: "You can't be in a bar, a couple of beers in, and 'I Want It That Way' comes on and not be like, 'This is a good song.' You can't."

GRAMMY Rewind: Kendrick Lamar Honors Hip-Hop's Greats While Accepting Best Rap Album GRAMMY For 'To Pimp a Butterfly' In 2016

Upon winning the GRAMMY for Best Rap Album for 'To Pimp a Butterfly,' Kendrick Lamar thanked those that helped him get to the stage, and the artists that blazed the trail for him.

Updated Friday Oct. 13, 2023 to include info about Kendrick Lamar's most recent GRAMMY wins, as of the 2023 GRAMMYs.

A GRAMMY veteran these days, Kendrick Lamar has won 17 GRAMMYs and has received 47 GRAMMY nominations overall. A sizable chunk of his trophies came from the 58th annual GRAMMY Awards in 2016, when he walked away with five — including his first-ever win in the Best Rap Album category.

This installment of GRAMMY Rewind turns back the clock to 2016, revisiting Lamar's acceptance speech upon winning Best Rap Album for To Pimp A Butterfly . Though Lamar was alone on stage, he made it clear that he wouldn't be at the top of his game without the help of a broad support system.

"First off, all glory to God, that's for sure," he said, kicking off a speech that went on to thank his parents, who he described as his "those who gave me the responsibility of knowing, of accepting the good with the bad."

Looking for more GRAMMYs news? The 2024 GRAMMY nominations are here!

He also extended his love and gratitude to his fiancée, Whitney Alford, and shouted out his Top Dawg Entertainment labelmates. Lamar specifically praised Top Dawg's CEO, Anthony Tiffith, for finding and developing raw talent that might not otherwise get the chance to pursue their musical dreams.

"We'd never forget that: Taking these kids out of the projects, out of Compton, and putting them right here on this stage, to be the best that they can be," Lamar — a Compton native himself — continued, leading into an impassioned conclusion spotlighting some of the cornerstone rap albums that came before To Pimp a Butterfly .

"Hip-hop. Ice Cube . This is for hip-hop," he said. "This is for Snoop Dogg , Doggystyle . This is for Illmatic , this is for Nas . We will live forever. Believe that."

To Pimp a Butterfly singles "Alright" and "These Walls" earned Lamar three more GRAMMYs that night, the former winning Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song and the latter taking Best Rap/Sung Collaboration (the song features Bilal , Anna Wise and Thundercat ). He also won Best Music Video for the remix of Taylor Swift 's "Bad Blood."

Lamar has since won Best Rap Album two more times, taking home the golden gramophone in 2018 for his blockbuster LP DAMN ., and in 2023 for his bold fifth album, Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers .

Loving Olivia Rodrigo's "Vampire"? Check Out 15 Songs By Alanis Morissette, Miley Cyrus & More That Reclaim The Breakup Narrative

From the soft hums of Carole King's "It's Too Late" to GAYLE's fiery rage on "abcdefu," these 15 songs encapsulate the expansive emotions of women who put problematic exes in their place — far behind them.

Since the 2021 release of SOUR , critics and listeners alike have touted Olivia Rodrigo for her knack to eloquently pen the relatable woes of adolescence and the pitfalls of falling in love too hard. Her latest single, "vampire," is no different.

Despite trading in her "drivers license" teenage loverboy for an older man, the perfectly executed expression of agony remains. As Rodrigo wails on the chorus, "You made me look so naïve/ The way you sold me for parts/ As you suck your teeth into me/ Bloodsucker, famef—er/ Bleeding me dry like a g——n vampire."

But before there was Rodrigo, there was Avril Lavigne , Taylor Swift , and Alanis Morissette — none of which would be where they were without pioneers of diaristic songwriting, Carole King and Carly Simon . Thanks to the immortalization of their music, we can relive the shift from poetic disclosures of hurt, which King exemplifies on "It's Too Late," to more unrepentant, straightforward jabs (like Kate Nash says on "Foundations," "Don't want to look at your face 'cause it's making me sick") and harrowing battle cries (as Miley Cyrus roars, "I came in like a wrecking ball").

Below, revisit 15 songs by empowered women, from 1971 all the way to 2021, who reclaimed the breakup narrative with their fervent sentences of damnation — because, as the age-old saying goes, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

Carole King — "It's Too Late" (1971)

When Carole King released "It's Too Late" in 1971, it marked a new era of songwriting. Discussions about divorce were generally unheard of, but even more so when initiated by a woman. Yet, King carried on to unapologetically release "It's Too Late," which later won a GRAMMY for Record of the Year and is lauded by Rolling Stone as one of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

On this folky track, King and her husband's inevitable parting is on the horizon, but she isn't resentful per se. Instead, she's more troubled by the embarrassment of her husband's growing discontent, admitting, "I feel like a fool." And at this point, she's ready to move on and can be grateful for the times they've shared.

Carly Simon — "You're So Vain" (1972)

In her '70s chart-topper, Carly Simon narrates the tale of an arrogant man who believes every woman is enchanted by his aura. But the folk songstress wants to make it very clear she's not impressed by his embellished stories or luxurious closet.

Usually, it's easy to guess the subject of a breakup song, but "You're So Vain" has led to decades of speculation. Many have assumed it could be about James Taylor , who Simon married in 1972 and divorced in 1983, or Mick Jagger , who provided vocals to the track (a theory that was later debunked). To this day, she has only revealed the track's inspiration to a select few, including Taylor Swift, who names Simon as one of her role models.

Joan Jett And The Blackhearts — "I Hate Myself For Loving You" (1986)

Joan Jett might not give a damn about her bad reputation, but she despises nothing more than her ex-lover making her look like a lovesick fool.

On "I Hate Myself for Loving You," the '80s chanteuse wraps herself around a classic glam rock beat, unveiling her contempt for a man who's neglected her. Stripped of her pride, Jett begins to resent herself for holding onto her feelings — as evidenced by the song's title.

She tries to hide her dwelling desires ("I want to walk, but I run back to you") but ultimately fails to rid herself of the emotions, leaving her to fantasize about the sweet justice of one day roping him back in, just to leave him.

Alanis Morissette — "You Oughta Know" (1995)

It's impossible to talk about scathing breakup songs without acknowledging Alanis Morissette's quintessential heartbreak anthem, "You Oughta Know." At the time of its release, the Jagged Little Pill single contained some of the most honest and vitriolic lyrics in existence.

Morissette begins with an illusive statement, "I want you to know that I'm happy for you," which, by the second verse, crumbles into a revelation, "I'm not quite as well, you should know." As she culminates into her most confessional, the instrumental rises into an addicting ruckus, with Morissette revealing the thoughts most of us would be too ashamed to admit: "It was a slap in the face how quickly I was replaced/ And are you thinkin' of me when you f— her?"

Shania Twain — "That Don't Impress Me Much" (1997)

Shania Twain has a particular superpower of delivering each of her lyrics with an air of lightheartedness and confidence. So, when you hear a track like "That Don't Impress Me Much," her disappointment and irritation becomes undetectable.

A quick examination of Twain's story proves — despite the song's bouncy melodies — she's jaded by her ex's preoccupation with his vehicle, appearance and intelligence. Sure, he might be perfect on paper, but he lacks the qualities of a forever lover, and his unmerited ego should be reserved for true big shots like Elvis Presley and Brad Pitt.

Michelle Branch — "Are You Happy Now?" (2003)

In the opening verse of "Are You Happy Now?," Michelle Branch pleads, "No, don't just walk away/ Pretending everything's okay, and you don't care about me." At first, she is in disbelief that her once admirer would swiftly brush her off, but as she reaches the chorus, she begins to question whether his actions were a lie all along.

Her mind racing, Branch teeters between shameless questions of "Do you really have everything you want?" and "Could you look me in the eye and tell me you're happy now?" But by the song's end, she gets the most satisfying payback of all — peace without him: "I'm not about to break/ 'Cause I'm happy now."

Avril Lavigne — "My Happy Ending" (2004)

"My Happy Ending" finds 2000s pop-punk maven Avril Lavigne grasping onto the shards of a broken relationship and trying to pinpoint where everything went wrong. She could have said the "wrong" thing, or her partner's misfit friends might have spoken negatively about her. But there is one thing she does know with certainty: there is no way to pick up the pieces.

Coming to terms with the truth, Lavigne repositions her anger toward the other person for stripping her of her fairytale ending, sarcastically acknowledging him for their time spent together over a somber piano: "It's nice to know you were there/ Thanks for acting like you care/ And making me feel like I was the only one."

Kelly Clarkson — "Gone" (2004)

Kelly Clarkson has traversed almost every emotion in love, from her epic breakup anthems like "Behind These Hazel Eyes" to her most recent LP chemistry . But "Gone" may just be her most unrelenting to date.

Introduced by its Breakaway counterpart "Since U Been Gone," the mononymous "Gone" extends Clarkson's journey of healing — this time, with a more explicit and mature diatribe against her ex's character. Rather than using trivial attacks, Clarkson instead chooses to call out his assumption she'd run back into his arms, later declaring an end to her toleration: "There is nothing you can say/ Sorry doesn't cut it, babe/ Take the hit and walk away, 'cause I'm gone."

Lily Allen — "Smile" (2006)

With "Smile," Lily Allen gets her sweet revenge through the sight of her former flame's tears and misfortune. But the lyrics of Allen's breakthrough single doesn't exactly clarify the specifications of her antics, only an explanation for its origins.

After a cheating scandal ends her relationship, her mental health plummets — until he comes crawling back for her mercy. Upon hearing his pleas, she comes to a realization: "When I see you cry, it makes me smile." And as the conniving music video shows, anyone who cheats on her will get their karma — perhaps in the form of organized burglary, beatings, and a laxative slipped into their morning coffee.

Kate Nash — "Foundations" (2007)

Following in the footsteps of her mentor Lily Allen, Kate Nash vividly paints the tragedy of falling out of love, made prismatic by her plain-spoken lyrics ("Your face is pasty 'cause you've gone and got so wasted, what a surprise!") and her charming, thick London accent.

In this story, Nash has not quite removed herself from the shackles of her failing relationship. In fact, she'd like to salvage it, despite her boyfriend's tendency to humiliate her and her irresistible urge to sneer back with a sarcastic comment. By the end of the track, Nash, becoming more restless, packs on new ways to inconvenience him — but in the end, still wonders if there's any saving grace to preserve their once blazing spark out of a fear of loneliness.

P!nk — "So What" (2008)

The year P!nk wrote "So What," she already had a bevy of platinum singles under her belt. With a gleaming social status and peaking career, she was apathetic to the temporary separation from her now husband, Carey Hart. Feeling the highs of newfound singlehood, P!nk was ready to incite personal tyranny, whether that meant not paying Hart's rent, drinking her money, or starting a fight.

Ironically, Hart appears as the antagonist in the music video, which P!nk revealed via her official fan website was a testament of their growth: "Carey hadn't heard the song before he did the video. That's how much he trusts and loves me [...] He gets it. He gets me," she said.

Taylor Swift — "Picture To Burn" (2006)

Taylor Swift has long solidified herself as the reigning queen of love songs, from ballads honoring the most committed relationships to diss tracks of heartbreaking adolescent flings. The latter houses one of the earliest (and most twangy) hits in Swift's sweeping catalog: "Picture to Burn."

In this deceivingly upbeat tune, Swift vows to seek vengeance on a boyfriend after he leaves her to date one of her friends — from getting with his friends to having her father give him a piece of his mind. And along the way, she will gladly dish out a few insults: "You're a redneck heartbreak who's really bad at lying/ So watch me strike a match on all my wasted time/ As far as I'm concerned, you're just another picture to burn."

Miley Cyrus — "Wrecking Ball" (2013)

Closing the door on her Hannah Montana days, Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" saw the childhood pop star in her most grown-up and vulnerable state to date. Months before the release, Cyrus had called off her engagement to her longtime boyfriend, Liam Hemsworth, paving the way for her thunderous performance on the Bangerz single.

Just as affecting as Cyrus' belting vocals is the track's iconic music video. Cyrus climaxes with a deafening cry — "All you did was wreck me" — as she swings across the screen on an actual wrecking ball, breaking down all her physical and metaphorical walls.

Halsey — "You should be sad" (2020)

By the mid-2010s, the industry had put angst on the back burner in exchange for feel-good EDM and trap beats. Well, that is, at least, until Halsey entered the picture.

After just two years in the limelight, Halsey had cultivated a vibrant assortment of sonic melodrama — from the dirt and grime of toxic, failed love on tracks "Bad at Love" and "Colors" to the Bonnie and Clyde-esque heated passion of "Him & I."

In 2020, Halsey rounded out her discography with the genre-bending, introspective Manic , where a track like "You should be sad" commands your attention with matter-of-fact, vindictive comments: "I'm so glad I never ever had a baby with you/ 'Cause you can't love nothing unless there's something in it for you."

GAYLE — "abcdefu" (2021)

Unlike most love songs, GAYLE refuses to point her fury on "abcdefu" solely toward her heartbreaker. The then-16-year-old singer, instead, rages against his mother, sister and pretty much anyone (and anything) he's associated with — other than his dog — across a searing melody with a bewitching bassline.

Earlier this year, GAYLE revealed to GRAMMY.com that she was "angry at him and was angry at the people who enabled him and his behavior." That animosity was palpable in "abcdefu," creating a magic as empowering as it is cathartic — and, like many songs that came before it, proving that there can be power in pain.

9 Times Queer Artists Made History At The GRAMMYs: From Elton John's Collab With BSB To Kim & Sam's "Unholy" Union

In celebration of Pride Month, GRAMMY.com has collected nine of the most meaningful and thrilling performances by queer artists from the ceremony’s history, which helped uplift the global LGBTIQA+ community.

The 60-plus years of the GRAMMY Awards encompasses some of the most awe-inspiring and breathtaking moments in music history — and it should be noted that queer performers have produced some of the most dazzling highlights. From Elton John ’s 1999 GRAMMY Legend Award to Sam Smith and Kim Petras ’ 2023 performance of "Unholy," there is no shortage of iconic queer moments in GRAMMY history.

But more than merely honoring and showcasing queer artists, the ceremony is also the only major award to have moved beyond the outdated gender binary in its categories, an important step in ensuring that every artist feels welcomed. And as queer stars continue to deliver stunning performances in addition to award wins on Music's Biggest Night, young artists have meaningful representation and inspiration.

In celebration of Pride Month, GRAMMY.com has collected nine of the most meaningful and thrilling performances by queer artists from the ceremony’s history. These moments commemorate some of the most impressive artists of the last few decades and helped uplift members of the LGBTIQA+ community around the world.

Elton John & The Backstreet Boys - "Philadelphia Freedom" (2000)

When one LGBTIQA+ icon writes a song that honors another queer trailblazer, it’s bound to make for a special moment on stage.

Performed at the 42nd GRAMMY Awards — the same night the Rocket Man was honored as MusiCares Person Of The Year, and a year after taking home the Legend Award — Elton John performed the bright and swinging "Philadelphia Freedom." With backing from the Backstreet Boys , the performance filled the room with sunshine.

The song was inspired by John’s close friend, tennis icon Billie Jean King. His piano flanked by the five Boys, John delivers a rollicking take on the number one hit, the mythic megastar in top form from every swaggery vocal growl to each thumping piano chord.

Melissa Etheridge & Joss Stone - "Piece Of My Heart" (2005)

Melissa Etheridge has always been an incredibly vulnerable artist, but when she walked onto the stage during the 47th GRAMMY Awards, her head bald due to chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer, her legend of raw strength reached a new level.

A loving grin plastered on her face and chopping out an explosive guitar riff, Etheridge didn’t waste a second, joining soul pop star Joss Stone for a tribute to queer icon Janis Joplin. Every syllable of "Piece of My Heart" coming out of Etheridge’s mouth shines sharply like a rough-cut gem, but her explosive howl as the song comes to its climax is the stuff of legend.

The fact that Etheridge made it through her cancer treatment and can still rock stages to this day is only further testament to just how powerful this moment of defiance turned out to be.

Lady Gaga - "Born This Way" (2011)

While the conversation surrounding Lady Gaga ’s early ‘10s award ceremony run will always center on her extravagant and boundary-pushing attire and stagecraft, she made sure to put her queer advocacy at full volume during her take on "Born This Way."

Sure, she entered the 53rd GRAMMY Awards in an egg and took time in her performance to play a snippet of Bach made famous in "The Phantom of the Opera" on a keyboard topped with mannequin heads. But in the very next moment, she ensured that the whole track slowed to a righteous halt to deliver a core message: "No matter gay, straight or bi/lesbian, transgender life/ I’m on the right track/ I was born to survive."

The white latex and space egg are important, but Lady Gaga wants to make sure you understand that the art is all in support of a message of inclusion, that stripped down to our strangest basics we’re all human.

Frank Ocean - "Forrest Gump" (2013)

Frank Ocean has proven to be one of the most mercurial stars in R&B, releasing just two studio albums since 2011 despite some of the most rabid anticipation in the music world. His changed plans, canceled performances, and vague updates only fuel that fire — but it’s performances like "Forrest Gump" that encapsulate that whole fandom experience.

The 55th Grammy Awards were a big night for Ocean, with six nominations and two golden gramophones coming his way, but his tender, raw love song was perhaps the most memorable of a night full of impressive tributes and star power. Homosexual love songs don’t get televised too often, and that’s what "Forrest Gump" is: pure, unabashed and straightforward; a young, mesmerizing vocalist and songwriter laid bare, playing a keyboard and backed by a video screen. There’s nothing to distract from his voice and his words: " You run my mind, boy/ Running on my mind, boy/ Forrest Gump ."

Macklemore, Ryan Lewis, Mary Lambert, Madonna & Queen Latifah - "Same Love/Open Your Heart" (2014)

There may not be a bigger performance of queer love in awards history than Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ elaborate staging of "Same Love" from the 56th GRAMMYs . Their performance of the anthem included lesbian vocalist Mary Lambert and queer icon Madonna — oh, and Queen Latifah literally overseeing marriage ceremonies for 33 couples of varying sexual identities and orientations, when same-sex marriage hadn’t yet been federally recognized.

Macklemore and Lewis won big at the ceremony, thanks in large part to inescapable upbeat hip-hop like "Thrift Shop" and "Can't Hold Us." But instead of getting everyone in the room with some easy fun, the duo opted for "Same Love" — a track in support of marriage equality and a protest to a tendency towards homophobia in the genre. Together, they provided a powerful statement of acceptance and love that surely opened eyes for audiences around the world.

Kesha, Camilla Cabello, Cyndi Lauper, Julia Michaels, Andra Day, and Bebe Rexha - "Praying" (2018)

The whole world was changing for Kesha on the runup to the 60th GRAMMY Awards. After years of struggle against her alleged abuser and an attempt to fully reclaim her career and life, she had not only taken powerful steps in that direction — she was doing so on Music's Biggest Night.

Her new album, Rainbow , had netted two nominations, and she was asked to perform. She opted for "Praying" (co-written by Ryan Lewis ), a paean to the power of change and hope, even in the darkest hours. Surrounded by a cadre of powerful women and clad in white and embroidery of blooming flowers, Kesha’s performance shows a moment of new life and transformation, an inspirational moment that continues to grow with promise of even more new music.

J anelle Monáe - "Make Me Feel" (2019)

Janelle Monáe ’s performance at the 61st GRAMMY Awards felt like a celebration of her quest to share her truest self. During a performance of the sensual, stylized, sci-fi epic take on "Make Me Feel," Monáe incorporated snippets of other Dirty Computer highlights into the breakdown — including the line "let the vagina have a monologue" from "Pynk" ( probably the first time that request had been made on the GRAMMYs stage).

Her black-and-white clad synchronized backup dancers gave shades of Robert Palmer, but Prince (another Black icon comfortable in gender-fluidity) was the true touchstone. But that’s in no way to say that Monáe is anything but an unparalleled icon of her own, whether on the guitar, in her dance steps, or on the mic.

Lil Nas X - "Dead Right Now"/"Montero (Call Me By Your Name)"/"Industry Baby" (2022)

After years of controversy and criticism (notably from talking heads and members of the public who had or would not listen to his music), Lil Nas X ’s performance at the 65th GRAMMY Awards had a real sense of catharsis.

Not that the Georgia-born rapper necessarily needed it — he’s proven plenty capable of pushing back and insisting on his identity on the daily, in social media and interviews. Still, the wide range of styles (both musical and visual) and performance versatility on display that evening felt special. His interstellar take on "Dead Right Now" proved he was capable of rising above all the noise; the hip-swiveling dazzle of "Montero (Call Me By Your Name)" showed he was unafraid to show his sensual side; and the stomp-along "Industry Baby" (complete with an appearance from Jack Harlow ) demonstrated that Lil Nas X is just flat-out one of the most exciting vocal talents in hip-hop.

Kim Petras and Sam Smith - "Unholy" (2023)

Trans representation on the GRAMMYs stage took a big step forward at the most recent ceremony, thanks to Kim Petras. Not only did the German-born pop star become the first openly trans woman to win a GRAMMY Award, but her blistering performance of "Unholy" with Sam Smith likely ignited more than a little bit of inspiration, intensity, and passion in the viewing audience.

Cast in a red glow, the duo embraced the fires of lust, Petras playing the fiery cage dancer to Smith’s devilish ringmaster. Every second of the performance dripped with sweat and sex, refusing to bow to any expectation or censure, Petras humping a corner of the cage as Smith gyrated around a cane. The smoking hot fever dream more than earned the FCC complaints and the zealous fans who went on to devour more of Smith and Petras’ music.

Pleasure P, Bobby V, Ray J, and Sammie of RSVP pose for group photo at Millennium Tour 2022

There was a distinct high that cocooned the first Millennium Tour in 2019. It was a moment for girls-turned-women to travel back to a time when they were screaming teenagers who collected Word Up! posters. The boys we once fawned over had reminded us that they were grown men now, that time was simply a social construct. For all intents and purposes, a perfectly frozen moment in time was thawed out right when we needed.

Victoria Monét Opens Up About PCOS Weight Gain

Despite Day26’s long-awaited reunion being filled with minor technical difficulties, the quintet powered through like the professionals they were molded to be. Their brief set prompted two questions though: when is their next Bryan-Michael Cox-produced album coming and why isn’t Making The Band available to stream? In hindsight, some parts of the concert should’ve been cut to make room for them to have a longer set.

The “Tell Me” crooner channeled his combative Verzuz energy as he declared, “n****s told me I couldn’t sing,” while finishing an acoustic run of “Turn The Page.” He was also the first act of the night to include background dancers, jumping off the stage platform as “Pimpin’ All Over The World” blared throughout the arena. To say he was doing a lot is an understatement. He ended his set with a mic drop after proclaiming, “‘ Verzuz ’ ain’t over. N****s can’t f**k with me.”

With similar exuberance, his RSVP bandmate Pleasure P used a movie trailer to usher in his set. Rocking a red fur coat, black leather pants, and a new blonde look before diving into his solo records, the Miami-bred singer branded himself the new “bad boy of R&B” with co-signs from Keith Sweat and Teddy Riley. The first surprise guest of the show was his brother, Spectacular, who aided him in performing their Pretty Ricky records “Grind With Me,” “Your Body,” and “On The Hotline.”

After thrusting the air and breaking out into a glisten, RSVP— Ray J , Sammie, Bobby V, and Pleasure P—recreated the “One Wish” viral moment from Verzuz before announcing their debut single , “Money Everywhere.” Their album’s release date was not announced.

Despite the brief escapism experienced with Thicke’s cooing of “Lost Without You,” the turn-up continued with the South taking over for the ‘99 and the 2000s. The Travis Porter -Crime Mob portion of the evening was evocative, transforming the room into a HBCU Homecoming afterparty. Between twerking in the aisles and all of us rapping along to “Knuck If You Buck” live as though it was a Sunday service, this is community personified. A personal apex was the present and the past coming together as Trillville performed “Some Cut” as their dancers hit Victoria Monét ’s viral choreography.

Later, Lil Jon popped up for a few songs while the Ying Yang Twins dedicated their set to “ the spirit of Takeoff. ” By the end of their set, the high energy declined at lightning speed. It seemed that many people tuned out Keri Hilson and Mario,  who are mostly known for their ballads. Even Mario’s featured guests Ty Dolla $ign and O.T. Genasis couldn’t reignite the show’s spark.

Bow Wow, the night’s main headliner, did his best to hype the crowd up with fan-favorites. His unfiltered 2005 diss track, “Fresh Azimiz,” was the perfect way to crank things back up. Dem Franchize Boyz—Parlae and Pimpin’—took centerstage to join Bow for a lively rendition of their collab, “I Think They Like Me (Remix)” sans Da Brat. The now-duo then performed their hit single, “Lean Wit It, Rock Wit It.” As the child prodigy took us on a ride with timeless gems like “Take Ya Home” and “Bounce With Me” before his daughter, Shai in lieu of Ciara, appeared for “Like You.” It may have been inching towards the end, but the rap phenom kept his set confined to the strict midnight deadline.

Despite Bow alluding to a potential Millennium Tour IV in 2023, the concert series either needs to end or change—no in-between. There are so many artists to be called upon for a tour that celebrates the 2000s. Both Chris Brown and Ne-Yo can have full sets based on their debut albums alone. Call upon Ginuwine, Donnell Jones, Mýa, or Monica. The era of the heartthrob may be dormant with current acts, but it’s clear authoritative veterans can still sell out shows.

Another idea might be is to hone in on quality over quantity by having less acts on the bill. Nonetheless, this tour needs to grow up—its fans already have.
