Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08

The links effect.

Is it that time of year already? The time when another Tiger Woods golf game ambles onto the fairway of life, prompting us all to chuckle at how it's the same as the last one and who buys these things and blah blah blah? Such cynicism is understandable, given the rather lazy port which heralded the series' next-gen debut with PGA Tour 06. Last year's update improved on that uninspiring start (not a difficult task) and, inevitably, this latest variation offers an even more tweaked and buffed experience.

But is it enough to entice the suspicious multitudes into making a purchase? The answer: probably.

Gameplay, for once, has undergone some obvious changes. The biggest additions to the game - the much vaunted GamerNet and Game Photo Face functions - are sort of sitting off to the side of the main game itself, so let's do a quick recap of the mostly positive enhancements made to the actual gameplay before we tackle those features.

The most sweeping change in this regard is the one that you probably won't notice until you've created your own golfer and played with them for a while. As with 07, all new golfers are rubbish. I mean, really. They're embarrassing. Fudging putts, hooking drives and generally making you wonder if your fingers have been replaced with sausages filled with wool. Tackling the PGA tournaments with such a golfer is a waste of time, so you're forced instead to spend your time in the additional game modes - especially Tiger Challenge - to build up your skills.

Whereas the tradition in previous games was to allow you to earn and allocate points to increase your different skills, this time EA has taken a more organic route to self-improvement. Your skills are automatically enhanced whenever you play well so, even if you lose a round, provided you were getting better at, say, driving then your skill in that area goes up regardless. It's a long and often arduous process, and one that will inevitably frustrate many. It's also refreshingly realistic, meaning you have to approach the game as you would in real life.

tiger woods pga tour 8

If you want to improve your putting, you need to practice putting. And keep practising. Play, play, play. The more you play the better you get, and while it'll be a lengthy wait before you can challenge the pros, it also eliminates the super-golfer syndrome that kicked in during previous Tiger Woods games, where shrewd upgrading could turn a wannabe into a champ far too quickly. If you're hitting good shots here it's because you're good at those shots, not because you bribed the game into making them easier.

This is all backed up by the new Shot Confidence system, which constantly monitors how you perform with different clubs, strokes and conditions and gives you a skill boost should you find yourself in a situation that matches your natural aptitude. It's always there, silently judging like an ex-girlfriend, and while the hardcore players can summon up the related stats to see where practice is needed, it's perfectly possible to just leave it ticking away, adding an almost invisible but notable element of human chemistry to the cold physics calculations.

Also of noteworthy newness is the return of the 3-Click feature, an absolute boon for those who struggle with the analogue stick system for taking shots. It's the tried and trusted method of hitting balls in golf games - click once to start the meter, click again to set the power, again on the way back for direction. A prod of the right stick switches between the systems whenever you need, so you can use the stick for a powerful drive, then swap to a 3-Click shot for added accuracy for a medium shot onto the green, and then back to the stick for putting. Or whatever combination works for you. Given that judging power levels on the stick can be something of an arcane art, being able to choose on the fly is most welcome.

tiger woods pga tour 8

Additionally, the left and right bumpers are now used to draw and fade your shots - sort of like curling a shot past the keeper in FIFA. Especially handy for negotiating dogleg fairways, or shaving past a hazard, you can now dictate the curve of your shot by shunting your target circle before lifting the club, an idiot-proof visual system far more reliable than trusting in your thumb to do the work on the swing itself. Spin can be added to the ball in the air, which - yes - is rather unrealistic but it reduces the pre-stroke clutter to a minimum and keeps you engaged once you let fly.

Also new is the Putt Preview, which overlays the trajectory of your putt over a topographic grid of the green before you commit. Another traditional feature of golf games past, it's just enough help without making things stupidly easy. Unavailable in the higher rankings, and only available once per hole even in basic play, you can't aim during the preview - only see what would happen if you took the shot now. For make-or-break long putts, it's a valuable safety net. There's also a new game mode (the amusingly titled Bingo Bango Bongo, in which points are scored for being first to the green, closest to the hole and for winning the hole) but, for a series so often derided for its lack of innovation, I'd say that's a decent amount of evolution on display.

Tiger Woods' 82 PGA Tour wins by the numbers

tiger-woods-tour-championship-2018-sunday-arms-raised.jpg

Tim Bradbury/Getty Images

Tiger Woods' pursuit of Jack Nicklaus' record 18 major championships has always drawn more focus than his chase of Sam Snead's 82 PGA Tour wins for two main reasons: 1.) It's a bigger deal; and 2.) It's a lot easier to understand. In the modern era, golf's four majors have been long established, while the criteria of what constitutes an official PGA Tour victory has been somewhat of a moving target. Snead's case , in particular, required a panel of golf historians put together by former commissioner Deane Beman in the late 1980s. That group combed through the Slammer's records and concluded he had 81 wins instead of 84. No, wait, make that 82. They eventually settled on 82, a total with which Snead wasn't pleased.

RELATED: Why Tiger Woods should get credit for passing Sam Snead long ago

Regardless, Snead won a LOT. Over a long period of time. And now over his own long period of time, Woods has also won a LOT. And until Woods wins again or another panel is created, they are officially tied at 82. So instead of digging into a comparison of these two legends— we've done that already —let's look closer at how Tiger got to No. 82.

20: Tiger's age when he won his first PGA Tour title (1996 Las Vegas Invitational).

43: Tiger's age when he won his 82nd PGA Tour title (2019 Zozo Championship). Snead was 52 when he won what would be officially his 82nd and final PGA Tour title at the 1965 Greater Greensboro Open.

3: Number of Woods' wins that have come in his 40s.

More From Golf Digest

33: Number of Woods' wins in his 30s.

46: Number of Woods' wins in his 20s. Just this total would rank him No. 7 on the PGA Tour's all-time wins list.

175579707

Gregory Shamus

15: Number of major championships Woods has won. Woods has also completed the career Grand Slam three times.

18: Number of World Golf Championships Woods has won. Dustin Johnson is second with six.

10: Number of seasons Woods has won at least five times, a PGA Tour record. Snead is No. 2 on the list with eight five-plus win seasons.

7: Number of tournaments Woods has won at least five times, a PGA Tour record. Snead and Jack Nicklaus have the next most with three.

8: Number of times Woods has won his first event of the season, the Zozo victory bumping him from seven. For comparison, Rickie Fowler has six PGA Tour titles total in his career.

164622089

David Cannon

5: Number of times Ernie Els and Vijay Singh have finished runner-up in a Woods win, the most of anyone. Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk and Davis Love III have each finished runner-up to Woods four times.

16: Number of different states Woods has won in. Woods has also won 16 times in Florida alone.

Chris Condon

22.8: Woods' winning percentage in his 359 career PGA Tour starts. Ben Hogan is second all-time at 21.3 percent. Snead won 14 percent of his career starts.

79: Number of Woods' PGA Tour wins that have come in stroke-play events. Woods has also won the WGC-Match Play three times.

243: The aggregate number of strokes Tiger has won his 79 tour stroke-play titles by. That comes out to a little over three shots per win.

4: Number of times Woods has won by at least 10 shots.

15: The largest margin of victory during Woods' career, his romp at Pebble Beach in the 2000 U.S. Open.

11: Number of Woods' wins that have come in playoffs. More incredibly, Tiger's record in extra holes is 11-1 with his lone loss coming to Billy Mayfair at the 1998 Nissan Open. Woods' first tour win in 1996 also came in a playoff against Davis Love III in Vegas.

963416

24: Number of Woods' wins in which he trailed after 54 holes. Woods' biggest come-from-behind win was five shots, done at the 2000 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and at the 2009 Arnold Palmer Invitational.

2: Number of times Tiger hasn't won when holding at least a share of the lead after 54 holes. He has converted 46 of 48 of these chances, a staggering 96 percent.

7: Woods' longest winning streak, which spanned parts of 2006 and 2007. Woods also has winning streaks of six and five tournaments. No one else since 1953 has ever won more than three PGA Tour events in a row.

$120,954,766: Career earnings by Woods on the PGA Tour. This has come in 373 starts, meaning Woods has earned $324,275 per start, or $1,475,058 per victory.

With 3 unwavering words, Tiger Woods puts PGA Tour on notice

Tiger Woods addresses the media during a press conference at this week's Hero World Challenge.

It had been a long time since Tiger Woods sat in front of a microphone. Sure, there are the mic’d up range sessions and event galas where he speaks with fans. But actually sitting in front of a mic, answering questions from the media? The last time that happened, he was at Augusta National, nearly eight months ago. Much has happened since.

So it was natural that one of the first questions Woods received Tuesday at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas started with an apology: “Tiger, I’m sorry to kind of go back, but we haven’t really spoken with you. What was your reaction to the June 6th framework announcement?”

That’s right, Woods hasn’t spoken publicly about the seminal day that defined much of the 2023 golf year — and could define much of the golf world moving forward.

“Well, going back to that,” Woods started, “I would say that my reaction was surprised as I’m sure a lot of the players were taken back by it, by what happened. So quickly, without any input or any information about it, it was just thrown out there. I was very surprised that the process was what it was.”

It’s not surprising that Woods was surprised. So was every pro golfer on the planet. But Woods — the global face of the game, who decried LIV Golf and rallied the top pros into creating a Signature Events system — also wasn’t going to let the Tour’s secret backroom dealings with its one-time Saudi rivals pass, or further develop, without closer inspection.

That’s why Woods is now one of six players on the PGA Tour’s all-important Policy Board. He never once held that position during the peak of his playing days, but he does now, thanks to a late-summer quasi coup during which 41 pros demanded Woods be granted a place on the board.

Why did that happen? Woods is never keen to dive into detail, but for a man who doesn’t say much, it’s often telling when he repeats himself. Tuesday’s phrase of the day was just three telling words: Can’t happen again . As in, what happened in the weeks leading up to maybe the most pivotal decision in PGA Tour history can’t…happen…again.

When asked about Jay Monahan’s role as commissioner, Woods said, “I think Jay has been a part of the direction, he understands what happened prior to that can’t happen again and won’t happen again.”

When asked for the emotions that drove him to join the board, Woods said, “I think the overall emotion is…we can’t let that happen again. ”

When asked about his confidence in Monahan, Woods said, “That was part of why I came on to the board is I did have faith in Jay and in what he could do going forward and what can’t happen again. ”

After more than a year of telling PGA Tour players that leaving for LIV Golf and a Saudi-backed payday was the wrong decision, Monahan and two non-player directors on the board — Jimmy Dunne and Ed Herlihy — agreed to finally take meetings with the Saudi PIF. The plans were cooked up almost entirely in secret , with only a few PGA Tour executives brought into the fold in the late stages of developing the Framework Agreement — essentially a deal that dropped active lawsuits and set a Dec. 31 deadline for a Definitive Agreement.

That Woods — who more than any other player over the last two decades made the Tour what is today — was surprised by the June 6 announcement tells you how much he was made aware before it all happened. Rory McIlroy, who was on the board alongside Herlihy and Dunne, only heard about the news on the morning the proposed deal was announced. And yet negotiations had been taking place for six weeks. The response from Tour membership was a fiery cocktail of confusion, anger and disappointment, and led to plenty of regret on Monahan’s behalf.

“My biggest regret was…I would have flown up to Toronto and would have communicated directly to the players that day before anything was said publicly,” Monahan said two months later. In other words, he wished he would have been more patient and brought the information to players more directly. That’s part of what Woods and the membership is still reeling about. Player involvement, or lack thereof.

Tiger Woods smiles during a press conference at the Hero World Challenge on Tuesday.

Tiger Woods targets surprisingly ambitious playing schedule for 2024

Woods is able to speak definitively now — “can’t happen again” — in part because players now have a 50 percent share of the policy board. Even though the board has never made a decision that went against unanimous player support, there has always been at least as many non-player seats as player seats. The membership, at least optically, wanted a change to that system. The board grew to 12 members, six of them being Tour pros. The players also now have a major window into the negotiations happening between the PGA Tour and outside investment.

As part of the demands for Woods to join the board, Collin Neville, a partner at Raine Capital, was guaranteed full access to documents and decisions made in the negotiations between the PGA Tour and the Saudi PIF, as well as extra investment interest via private equity firms. Neville, who manages Raine’s sports division, has overseen some of the biggest investment deals in recent sports history, including the record sale of Chelsea Football club and the ongoing interest in Manchester United. He understands Woods, he understands McIlroy, he understands major investment, and even understands deriving a league with player equity, a rare thing in sports but one of the topics being discussed in the negotiations. Neville helped launch the Premier Lacrosse League in 2018, which has a player equity system.

With Neville’s oversight role, Woods’s spot on the Policy Board and the belief that “Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me,” it’s likely that Woods’ “can’t happen again and won’t happen again” mandate will come to fruition.

But will a deal between the PGA Tour and the Saudi PIF happen in 2023, ahead of the New Year’s Eve deadline? Even Woods doesn’t sound sure of that.

“I’m pleased at the process and how it’s evolved,” he said. “Also frustrated in some of the slowness and the governance change that we want to have happen. And December 31st is coming up very quickly.”

Report: Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy among big PGA Tour payouts

Rory McIlroy explains why the PGA Tour's equity figures are insufficient to compete with LIV Golf's payouts. (0:19)

Tiger Woods , Rory McIlroy and other PGA Tour stars are about to receive massive bonuses for their loyalty.

The Telegraph reported Wednesday that Woods will receive up to $100 million in equity as part of the newly created for-profit PGA Tour Enterprises, with McIlroy getting about half that amount.

The payouts, which are set to be disclosed to the players by PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan on Wednesday, are a way to thank players for sticking with the PGA Tour instead of jumping to the rival LIV Golf League and huge paydays from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.

Nearly 200 players will receive a stake, with $750 million of it going to the top 36 players based on a formula that weighs career success and cultural popularity, according to The Telegraph. Other notable payouts include $30 million each for Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas , while $75 million is targeted to go to notable retired players.

To receive the money, players would have to continue to remain loyal to the PGA Tour, with the funds vesting over the next eight years, according to The Telegraph. And going forward, the PGA Tour plans to award $100 million per year to the players.

McIlroy, playing this week in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, was asked Wednesday how much would make players feel validated for their decision to stay with the PGA Tour.

"I think the one thing we've learned in golf over the last two years is there's never enough," said McIlroy, who also said that he's interested in returning to the PGA Tour's policy board, as has been reported and is pending a board vote that could take place this week.

"At the end of the day, it's not quite up to me to just come back on the board," McIlroy said. "There's a process that has to be followed."

The other board members are Patrick Cantlay , Peter Malnati , Adam Scott , Spieth and Woods.

PGA Tour Enterprises received an investment of up to $3 billion earlier this year from Strategic Sports Group, a consortium of sports team owners that includes the New York Mets ' Steve Cohen and the Atlanta Falcons ' Arthur Blank.

A week later, Monahan outlined the first-of-its-kind equity ownership program in a Feb. 7 memo to players.

Any deal with PIF would most certainly increase the value of the equity shares.

A source with knowledge of the Player Equity Program told The Associated Press that the equity money is not part of the SSG investment. That money was geared toward growth capital.

Golf.com, which received a series of informational videos on the Player Equity Program that was sent to players, reported only 50% of the equity would vest after four years, 25% more after six years and the rest of it after eight years.

The 36 players from the top tier were judged on "career points," such as how long they were full members, victories, how often they reached the Tour Championship and extra points for significant victories, Golf.com reported.

"It's really about making sure that our players know the PGA Tour is the best place to compete and showing them how much the Tour appreciates them being loyal," Jason Gore, the tour's chief player officer, said in one of the videos obtained by Golf.com.

Emails also were sent to 64 players who would share $75 million in aggregate equity based on the past three years, and $30 million to 57 players who are PGA Tour members. Also, $75 million in equity shares was set aside for 36 past players instrumental in building the tour.

The program has an additional $600 million in equity grants that are recurring for future PGA Tour players. Those would be awarded in amounts of $100 million annually started in 2025.

Players only get equity shares from one of the four tiers now, although everyone would be eligible for the recurring grants.

Even with equity ownership geared toward making the PGA Tour better, the concern was players questioning who got how much and whether they received their fair share.

The PGA Tour and LIV are in merger talks, but they have been protracted, with no clear end in sight. Both tours have continued to operate independently, keeping many of the top names in golf from competing against one another for most of the golf calendar -- major tournaments (Masters, US Open, British Open and PGA Championship) excepted

"I think I could be helpful to the process," McIlroy said of a formalized unification of the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. "But only if people want me involved."

He said he aims to promote compromise while also trying "to help people see the benefits of what unification could do for the game and what it could do for this tour in particular."

"We obviously realize the game is not unified right now for a reason, and there's still some hard feelings and things that need to be addressed," McIlroy said. "But I think at this point, for the good of the game, we all need to put those feelings aside and all move forward together."

The Associated Press and Field Level Media contributed to this report.

Report: Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy will get huge loyalty bonuses from PGA Tour

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are among the golfers expected to be given equity in PGA Tour Enterprises as a thank you for sticking with the Tour instead of jumping to rival LIV Golf, the Telegraph reported on Wednesday.

Woods will receive a $100 million and McIlroy a $50 million stake in the newly-formed enterprise for not taking lucrative offers from the Saudi-backed LIV as merger negotiations between the two circuits continue to drag on.

A substantial portion of current PGA Tour members will be rewarded with equity in the new for-profit entity, according to a memo sent out in February by commissioner Jay Monahan and seen by Reuters.

PGA Tour Enterprises is majority owned by the Tour and bolstered by a $1.5 billion investment by Strategic Sports Group, a consortium of sports team owners, the memo said.

The program will reward top performing members and legends who helped build the modern PGA Tour, the memo said.

The initial round of player equity grants will total $930 million and will be awarded to 193 PGA Tour members, with the majority of that going to the top 36 players as determined by a performance-based formula, the memo said.

All initial grants will require players to compete in 15 or more events on the PGA Tour and/or complete service requirements commensurate with the value of the grant.

A spokespersonfor the PGA Tour said the Tour could not comment on any detail of the Telegraph report due to U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission regulations and private financial information.

Tiger Woods' son, Charlie, fails to advance for U.S. Open in his first attempt, with a 9-over 81

tiger woods pga tour 8

PORT ST. LUCIE — Charlie Woods boasted recently how had achieved something his famous father, Tiger , never had … win a high school state championship.

On Thursday, Charlie was hoping to the take the first step toward more bragging rights in the Woods household … youngest to play in a major.

Charlie, though, had a rough start at the local qualifying event for the U.S. Open and never recovered, finishing with a 9-over 81 at the Legacy Golf & Tennis Club.

Woods, 15, was one of 84 entries competing in the local event, with five advancing to 36-hole qualifying in June. Woods' score was five shots better than his first attempt to qualify for a PGA Tour event. He shot an 86 in February at the Lost Lake Golf Club in Hobe Sound in a pre-qualifying round for the Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches .

The odds are long for anyone attempting to qualify for the championship. According to the The United States Golf Association, Woods was one of 10,084 entries looking to fill about 80 spots for the tournament that will be at Pinehurst in June. Sites in 44 states and Canada are conducting 109 local qualifiers through May 20.

Those who advance will play in one of 13 36-hole qualifying events in June, including June 3 at the Bear's Club in Jupiter.

Tiger, who lives on Jupiter Island but was not in attendance Thursday, was 19 when he competed in his first major, the 1995 Masters. Since, has won15 majors, second only to Jack Nicklaus' 18 major championships, including the U.S. Open in 2000, 2002 and 2008.

Charlie Woods helped Benjamin win 2023 Florida state golf championship

Charlie , who helped The  Benjamin School win the 2023 state championship , had three double bogeys, four bogeys and a birdie Thursday. On the par-3 No. 5 he dropped a putt from about 15 feet, pumping his fists as the ball disappeared into the cup.

After starting with a bogey, Woods hit his second shot into the water on the par-5 second hole. After his drop, what saved him from back-to-back water balls was the seasonal drought when his third shot landed short of the green and rolled back toward the lake. It stopped about a foot before the water in the muddy edge.

After making the turn in 40, Woods had a rough stretch from the 11th to the 16th hole, going 5-over. He appeared especially frustrated after his second shot on No. 14 sailed left of the green, Charlie then turned to his caddy, Benjamin teammate Luke Wise, and said something about the "worst golf."

He hit 9 of 14 fairways but just 8 of 18 greens in regulation.

Woods' next qualifying rounds will be for the 2024 U.S. Junior Amateur Golf Championship and the 2024 U.S. Amateur Golf Championship, both this summer.
