Todd Snider hits the road for 'Return of the Storyteller' tour: See the dates

todd snider tour bus

Nashville troubadour Todd Snider makes up for lost time with plans for an expansive North American tour that kicks off this week in rural Grundy County, Tennessee.

The singer-songwriter hits the road this summer and fall for his "Return of the Storyteller" tour, a run of 50-plus shows starting Saturday at The Caverns, an underground cave venue in Pelham, Tennessee, roughly 85 miles southeast of Nashville.

The tour takes Snider to concert halls across the United States, including The Gramercy Theatre in New York City, Great American Music Hall in San Francisco and Oriental Theater in Denver, among others.

Snider stops in Music City on Sept. 24 for a headlining gig at Ryman Auditorium, a show taking place the same week as AmericanaFest returning to downtown Nashville. Country songwriter Jack Ingram — known recently for releasing "The Marfa Tapes" with Miranda Lambert and Jon Randall — opens the show.

The tour makes a final Tennessee stop Nov. 17 at the Bijou Theatre in Knoxville.

And Snider pulled no punches in enlisting support talent for his upcoming run. Openers include songwriting treasures such as Ingram, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Jamie Lin Wilson, Darrin Bradbury and Ramblin' Jack Elliott, among others.

Snider plans to capture audio from the tour for an upcoming live album, "The Comeback Special," which aims for a 2022 release.

"After (c)oronavirus, I knew I wanted to release a live album of this tour and call it 'The Comeback Special,'" Snider said in a press statement. "Being unable to tour for more than a year has given me the opportunity to work on new songs and covers and practice old material. I want the people to be part of my upcoming album and to release something special for those that missed live concerts as much as I have."

Snider tours in support of his latest studio album, "First Agnostic Church of Hope and Wonder." He released the record earlier this year , exploring funk influence and paying homage to a trio of songwriting heroes — John Prine , Jerry Jeff Walker and Billy Joe Shaver — who died last year.

Todd Snider (born October 11, 1966) is an American alt-country and Americana themed singer-songwriter and musician who is best known for his string of albums on John Prine’s Oh Boy Records, hailing from Portland, Oregon, U.S.

Born and raised in Portland, Oregon, until his family moved to Houston, Texas, at 15 Todd Snider ran away from home, returning to his beloved Portland. Following a brief stint as a harmonica player in Santa Rosa, California, the budding musician moved to Austin, Texas, and began honing his live performance skills. Influenced by the solo efforts of Jerry Jeff Walker, Snider’s first break came when he was offered residency as the Memphis club Daily Planet, where he became acquainted with Coral Reefer Band’s Keith Sykes. Both Jimmy Buffett and John Prine subsequent heard demos of the singers and made efforts to aid the progression of his career.

In 1994 Snider released his debut studio album “Songs for the Daily Planet” on MCA Records. Led by the modest singles “Talkin’ Seattle Grunge Rock Blues” and “Alright Guy”, the record proved a popular local hit and led to two more albums with MCA “Step Right Up” in 1996 and “Viva Satellite” in 1998. Following the release of “Viva Satellite”, Snider moved to John Prine’s Oh Boy Records, and released his debut record on the label, “Happy to Be Here” in 2000. Whilst failing to chart, “Happy to Be Here” earned a host of positive reviews and paved the way for the subsequent releases “New Connection”, “Near Truths and Hotel Rooms”, and “East Nashville Skyline”. Showcasing the rugged singer’s croaky vocals which reveal his witty, and regularly heartfelt lyrics, in 2005 the Snider issued the best-of compilation “That Was Me: The Best of Todd Snider 1994-1998”.

Peaking at No. 4 on the U.S. Heatseekers chart, 2006’s “The Devil Know You” proved a favourite among fans and was followed by the live release “Live with the Devil You Know” in 2007. Snider’s 10th studio album “The Excitement Plan” maintained his signature country-influence, which included prominent slide guitar, however also included jazz and blues influences. Rising to No. 95 on the Billboard 200 and No. 6 on the U.S. Folk Chart, the singer-songwriter’s 11th full-length album “Agnostic Hymns & Stoner Fables” arrived in March 2012.

Live reviews

What to expect from Todd Snider? A little bit of everything. Some folk, a little rock, maybe some blues, a few rants, several great stories. each show is different.

I've seen him solo a few times and he puts on just as good a show as with a full band. Greatest singer in the world? No. Greatest musician in the world? No. But he makes up for it with his pure will to entertain.

For his career status, it concerns me that Snider is on the other side of Nashville (from Oregon, via, Texas); never to become as popular and known as he should be. the scope of his connections from artists like Cody Canada to Widespread Panic should excite an audience, but a lot of time it just baffles most people who are stuck in a genre rut.

Snider is not afraid to cover a song from an idol like Jerry Jeff Walker or John Prine, or too proud to let others cover his material (and have hits with them), like Robert Earl Keen or Gary Allan.

With his biting lyrics and social commentaries, this is a guy that should be heard. But by his admission, he's not trying to change your mind, he's just trying to get things off his chest and maybe make you think in the process while you're tapping your toes.

Todd’s show at the Boulder Theater started with the humor he’s become famous for - self deprecating and able to catch you off guard. He apologized for not being barefoot but shared that his doctor told him a lot of his health woes come from not wearing shoes.....and then of course drugs. “Talk Blues” has replaced “Grunge Rock Blues” in his song line up and is every bit as funny. And he expresses his opinion only because....it all rhymes. Best song of the night? “I Think I’m an Alright Guy”. Every one knew the words and sang along. I have loved Todd’s music for 23 years and couldn’t be more for finally having gotten a chance to see him live!

First time seeing Todd Snider. Drove down from London.Ontario .Canada. About eiight hours.Fantastic show. everything I had hoped for.I really enjoy his music and storytelling.Good sound and venue. Wish I didn't have to travel so far to see him but it is what it is.Met a lot of nice people at the concert and bought a couple of t-shirts as well as his latest C.D. Rorey Carroll was also very good but I came to hear Todd. Was pleasantly surprised to hear him sing a couple John PRINE TUNES.Have seen J.P. play about six times. Great Show Todd. Thanks and keep it up. Would love to see you in London some time. And Oh. Happy Birthday.

Don't know where to start. Put it this way, if he played 7 nights in a row, I'd go every night. He'd probably play a different set each night, he has so many great songs.

Crowd was lame, but it was hurricaney and this is a red state, and Todd's pretty open and unapologetic about his lifestyle. He is a national treasure in my opinion/

Not a show for the uptight!

Opener was great too and the did a sweet duet to end the show.

Saw Todd on March 18th at the Oriental Theater in Denver, CO. Absolutely fantastic show! Played a great setlist!!! There were a couple of songs I wish he would've played but not at the expense of any of the ones he did play. Rorey Carroll kicked ass too! Was pleasantly surprised by her. I'd definitely go see her again. I'd honestly describe the show as perfect. Go see Todd Snider at a venue near you!!!!!

Todd Snider was absolutely amazing. This was he first time I had ever been to one of his shows and he did not disappoint. He was everything I had been told and then some. The way he interacts with the crowd and tells stories is second to none. He finished the show by bringing out John Prine!! Definitely a night I will not forget

I really love this guy.

As I try to explain to my friends ...

"anyone can pick up a guitar, strum a few chords and sing some stuff .... some people are just better at it."

todd is very empowering about life and generally makes you feel like an 'all right guy'.

Thanks Todd.

ps. wearing my t-shirt! ha !!

Saw him in Nashville with the Hard Working Americans. They were amazing!!! Can't watch Todd perform without a smile on your face and your butt shaking. Got tickets for the Ryman Birthday show and I cannot wait. Don't believe it would be possible for him to put on a bad show.

Todd Snider: The American Troubadour Tour

With special guest Tommy Prine

  • Music + Concert
  • Singer/Songwriter
  • Country + Folk

This event has passed. View Upcoming Events.

Todd Snider is known for humorous, though often poignant, lyrics delivered in classic troubadour style. A slyly intelligent songwriter, his live shows combine acclaimed musicianship and endearing storytelling for a one-of-a-kind night of modern folk music.

“Playing live is the only chance for me to show, ‘This is what I really do.’ I’ve never thought of myself as a recording artist. I’m someone who gets over by traveling around, telling stories, making up new songs and singing them alone onstage.”

Tommy Prine is a Nashville-native, singer-songwriter, and performer. He picked up a guitar at age 10 and started picking melodies. Though he has crafted his own unique sound over the years, he learned from observing one of the best. He is the son of the late legendary multi Grammy award-winning artist, John Prine.

The watermark of Tommy’s sound comes from his unique finger-picking style combined with soul-stirring songwriting. His debut album has been recorded and is yet-to-be released.

Troubadour, meaning an itinerant singer of songs, is a word that dates back centuries, and comes from the French verb “trouver,” which  is to find. These musical wanderers would find and invent stories humorous and intellectual, romantic and earthy, performing them as they went from town to town. Troubadour is also the word that acclaimed musician-raconteur Todd Snider leans on to describe himself and his latest release, Live: Return of the Storyteller .

“I think my first thought with this record was I wanted to remind people really quickly that I’m a troubadour,” says Snider. “Playing live is the only chance for me to show, ‘This is what I really do.’ I’ve never thought of myself as a recording artist. I’m someone who gets over by traveling around, telling stories, making up new songs and singing them alone onstage.”

Before he even made his professional debut with Songs For The Daily Planet in 1994, Snider already knew that he wanted to be part of this time-honored tradition. “I like the romantic notion of drifting around and laughing your way through life,” he says. “Like Jim Croce or Mark Twain. I felt like I was half-doing that anyway. When I was 19, I was a real drifter and a sofa circuit person. Then when I first saw Jerry Jeff Walker and John Prine play, I became obsessed. I followed them both around like The Grateful Dead. I saw that the difference between a free spirit and a free loader was three chords.”

“And as soon as I figured that out, I knew that it would help me as a person who didn’t have a plan. Just to be a busker. I didn’t want to sign up for normal life. I wanted to do another thing, and then it turned into a real gig. I was really surprised. It’s still funny to be getting away with it.”

That speaks to Snider’s modesty about his singular talent and deep catalog of songs of every emotional stripe. Rolling Stone has called him “America’s sharpest musical storyteller” while the New York Times described him as “a wryly quotable phrase maker and worthy antagonist.” Live: Return of the Storyteller– his third live album and nineteenth overall- plays like a masterclass by one man with a guitar and a freewheeling imagination. Threading his husky-voiced phrasing through a likable cosmic cowboy manner, he invites you on a tour of tunes humorous (“Big Finish,” and the have-meets-have-not “In Between Jobs”), Proustian (“Play a Train Song,” “Too Soon To Tell,” and the lump-in-the-throat snapshot of John Prineon “Handsome John”) and heart-worn (“Like a Force of Nature,” “The Very Last Time,” “Roman Candles”). As the fifteen-song set unfolds, you can feel a tangible bond building between Snider and his fans.

But the songs are only half of what makes the connection so compelling.

Acting as palate cleansers and putty, the stories between numbers offer colorful glimpses into Snider’s interior life. Whether he’s talking about being mistaken for a homeless guy in a nice hotel, searching for a song in the woods while tripping or the poetry of one of his heroes dying on stage, his spoken interludes are delivered with both meandering charm and deadly comic timing.

Snider credits an unlikely source of inspiration for both. “The comedian Richard Lewis is a friend and a mentor, and we talk almost every day,” Snider says. “We met about six or seven years ago through a drummer who’s a mutual friend, and really hit it off. I feel like since I’ve known him, my story telling has evolved. I don’t know that I’ve gotten better, but a lot of the ways I approach my shows is from learning things from Richard. Especially this idea of being able to go on and on without just going on and on. To ramble without getting boring.”

Snider is also mindful about not repeating himself when he’s returning to a familiar venue, which can add a tight rope quality to his performances. “On this record, when I left Nashville, I didn’t know what I was going to say,” he admits. “I just knew that it couldn’t be the same shit that I’ve said. I was going to have to have some new stories to tell. That’s how it’s been for years. Then one night, I’ll get up there and open my mouth and something new comes out. And then I’ll just keep telling it and refining it. It happens under pressure.”

The timing of Live: Return of the Storyteller’s release has extra resonance in our post-pandemic era. Snider says, “I’m glad I recorded the tour last year, because that was the sound of the country getting to see live music again. It was unique and it won’t happen again. Everyone just hugs at the start of a concert- you can tell that they’re glad to see each other, and then they get more excited than they used to be about just being out and seeing music. I’m sure that it will go back to normal, but it hasn’t yet.”

While the album captures what Snider laughingly calls his “second tour-because I went out on the road in ’94 and never went home until the pandemic” – it acts as both a summing up of a thirty-year career and a look ahead.

“I always think that being a recording artist isn’t something that I’ve thrived at, ”he says. “I have fun with it and try all different kinds of music and try to learn more and more, but the only reason I get to do it is because of the main thing I do- which is travel around by myself and sing and tell stories. That thing works. Since I was twenty, that thing has worked. People come to see me do it and I love to do it.”

Moscow: City Sightseeing by Car/Bus

Visiting a new city is akin to going on a first date, it is something you will never forget. Many people imagine Moscow as just a bunch of sporadic landmarks: Red Square, the Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum and GUM. There is so much more to this wonderful city than that and even though we only have a few hours, we will do all we can to show you everything we know and love about our capital in one fell swoop. We will take you on a journey through the ages, from centuries ago, right up to the modern day, soaking in the sights of this vast and bustling metropolis. Bright, luxurious and both ancient and modern at the same time, Moscow invites you on a date you’ll never forget!

On our sightseeing bus tour of the city, you will see:

  • The wonderfully historic city centre and its unique museums, magnificent cathedrals, the exquisite Chambers of the Romanov Boyars and of course, the famous towering red brick walls of the Kremlin, The charming beauty of the Alexander Garden awaits the capital's guests - a lush green oasis in the midst of the glass and concrete clad metropolis, basking in the etherial aura emanating from the whitewashed stone walls of the restored Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the world- renowned fairytale onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedral and other impressive monumental buildings such as the library built in Lenin's honour - the Russian State Library - and the State Duma.
  • The Lubyanka KGB headquarters is notorious to members of older generations and although nowadays, the face of the secret police has changed dramatically, the looming enigmatic building on the waterfront maintains its aura of mystery, shrouded in a variety of murky rumours and dark myths. Then, there’s another of Moscow's main attractions - the marvellous Bolshoi Theatre, yew simply cant leave Moscow without taking in its breathtaking architecture. Engrained in the fabric of Russia's cultural heritage, virtuoso performers such as prima ballerina Galina Ulanova, opera singer Feodor Chaliapin and pianist, composer and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff once stood centre stage of this vaunted institution.
  • The memorial complex on Poklonnaya Hill was constructed in the glory and honour of our heroes who defended our nation in the many crucial battles of the Great Patriotic War (WWII). This is a place that embodies a particularly acute and inextricable link between older ancf younger generations. Moving on to the Moscow International Business Centre, not dubbed ‘Moscow City' for nothing, a true glimpse of the future in the present. This incredible, rather jaw-dropping project in the capital has shown that Moscow has come to accept the age of the skyscraper. Finally, the stunning views from the observation deck at Sparrow Hills will leave professional and amateur photographers alike itching to capture them. How could one resist?
