A girl's adventure in food and travel around the world, review: tokyo bay sunset cruise with the symphony.

For the past few years, I ended up spending my birthday in Tokyo . It coincides with the holiday season and that’s when we would do our annual pilgrimage back to our second home. On one of the years, my husband decided to surprise me with… a sunset cruise at Tokyo Bay!

There are a few cruises in Tokyo, but the most popular one is probably The Symphony, and that’s the one we went with. This post details our experience on the cruise!

About Symphony Cruise

Symphony Cruise is a cruising company that runs multiple cruises out of Tokyo Bay. Symphony Cruise has two ships: Symphony Moderna and Symphony Classica .

Symphony Moderna started sailing in 1992 and can carry 600 passengers, including crew and employees. Symphony Classica, on the other hand, started sailing in 1989 with a capacity of 450 passengers.

Symphony Cruise Route and Schedule

Symphony Cruise runs four cruises a day, with the following schedule:

Each cruise will follow a slightly different route as pictured below. But generally, the route sails under the Rainbow Bridge and Tokyo Gate Bridge. You’ll also be able to see Tokyo Skytree from afar and planes landing or taking off from Haneda Airport.

It is possible to book a guaranteed window seat for Sunset and Dinner Cruise. You just need to book a specific meal that will guarantee you a window seat, which will be indicated upon booking – usually, this is the Japanese Beef Steak set or the Royal French set.

Another note on seating – for the Sunset and Dinner Cruise, your seating is determined by which meal you booked. You cannot book different meals as you will be seated on different parts of the ship.

Children are allowed onboard for some of the cruises. For the lunch, afternoon, and sunset cruise, you can purchase discounted tickets for children aged 6-11. Small children 5 and below can be brought onboard for a further discounted fare, provided they don’t occupy any seats and don’t require food. However, for the dinner cruise, only children over 7 years old are allowed.

The cruise I went on was the Sunset Cruise , which runs for 2 hours in the late afternoon. But because I went during winter, the days are short and the sun sets about 20 minutes after we’ve started cruising… so it really felt like a dinner cruise.

Boarding Symphony Dinner Cruise

Symphony Cruise leaves from Hinode Pier , just a few minutes away from Hinode Station on the Yurikamome line.

Be there early. Get to Hinode Pier 15 minutes before the cruising time to be on time for boarding! The ship leaves on time right on the dot and they will not wait for late passengers.

We actually almost missed our cruise because my husband tried to keep the cruise a surprise for me. On the way to the pier, I kept getting distracted by other things and he couldn’t discreetly tell me to hurry up (bless him, it must have been stressful for him). Then to top it off, we went to the wrong pier! We had to quickly grab a taxi to drive 2 minutes down to the correct pier.

Thankfully, we were able to get on the cruise just as it was about to leave. By the time we finally got to Hinode Pier, everybody had already been checked in and seated on the ship. We were literally the last passengers to board and they closed the doors behind us as the ship was about to leave within the next minute. 😰 So learn from our close call and be there early!

After escaping the blunder, we were quickly seated in our dining area in the Four Seasons room.

The 5-Course Meal Experience on The Symphony Cruise

My husband wanted to guarantee a window seat, so he booked the Japanese Beef Steak set for us, which is a 5-course meal served in French style. I think the window seat is worth it. As you can see from my photo, the window was large and offered an unblocked view for the entire cruise.

The exact menu changes per season, so I will not go into too much detail, but the photos below should give you an idea of what to expect from the meal.

And yes, all of the dishes were delicious!

And because the entire occasion for this cruise was for my birthday, they gave us an extra sixth course – a mini Japanese strawberry shortcake!

Needless to say, I was very stuffed by the end of the meal service. And happy, of course!

Exploring the Symphony Moderna Cruise Ship

The Symphony Moderna is a big ship, so in between the courses of our meal, we snuck out of our seat to explore all the levels on the ship.

Here is a quick glance at the ship’s floor plan. You can also view a 3D scan of the ship floor map here .

Aside from the room we were in, there were a few more rooms on the ship. Since the seating are determined by the type of meal, I’m guessing those rooms are for guests who did not order the steak meal.

Most notably, there is a bar lounge called Arabesque and a Japanese sushi restaurant called Kanon on the 3rd floor. Looks like a nice place to hang out!

We headed up to the 4th floor, where the open observatory deck is located. Although we went during the winter and it was cold, the deck is worth checking out. Just make sure you have a proper winter coat because it is freezing up there!

We kept going back and forth between the top deck and the meal for the entire 2 hours of our cruise.

Overall, I think the cruise is a great option for activities in Tokyo. While I think the window seat is worth it, you don’t need to book the window seat because you can just spend time on the open deck or other parts of the ship.

What other types of cruises are there?

Aside from the large cruise ship, you could try Yakatabune House Boat Cruise , which is a much smaller and more traditional type of boat. I have gone on one of these in a team bonding outing with my work, and it was a lot of fun!

Note: My husband took me on the dinner cruise and paid for it from his own pocket. As always, all thoughts and opinions are honest and remain my own.

Luo Jingmei

Moto Azabu is an upscale residential neighbourhood in Tokyo. Along its quaint pavements, there is a house that displays a reticent face to the street, with a two-storey blank, silvery-grey wall. There are no windows on this elevation to give clue to the domestic happenings, but within is an inviting sanctuary for the family who relocated to the city several years ago.

Designed by Japanese firm SAAD (Sudo Associates, Architecture and Design), the owner runs an international property development company Zekkei Properties. The business is particularly invested in Hokkaido, where they entered the scene early in 2005, creating many hotels and luxury properties including Elevation – Upper Hirafu’s first gated estate designed by renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma.

“The company also owns Fenix Furano and Fenix West – two hotels in Niseko that we designed. It is now focusing on developing residential works of a smaller scale in Tokyo,” shared SAAD’s founder Tomoyuki Sudo. The house – the owner stays here with her husband and two children – is the perfect showcase of her portfolio. Her family fits the profile for her target clients who want homes with well-designed spaces, a sense of refined luxury and exceptional quality.

“Real estate prices in this area are among the highest in Tokyo, attracting demand from both within Japan and internationally,” Sudo commented. A small apartment building used to stand on the 278.1 sq m plot. The house, with a built-up area of 614.78 sq m, is considered generous in the city where most detached houses average a floor area of 98.3 sq m, according to the Statista Research Department.

The area is home to many houses such as these, aside from numerous foreign embassies and luxury apartments. “There are also many cafes opened by foreign brands, restaurants and art galleries, exuding an atmosphere of sophistication,” described Sudo. Other well-known buildings in the area include Tokyo Tower, Roppongi Hills and the newly completed Azabudai Hills.

When designing the house, Sudo had to address several constraints. These included the need for privacy from passers-by and buildings nearby – typical in Tokyo, where the walls of houses next door can be an arm’s length.

The footprint follows the shape of the plot, which stretches longer at the rear behind a neighbour’s house. Views were limited at the two sides, but the back of the house faced courtyards of buildings within proximity , so Sudo created large openings on the lower levels in this direction, aiming for “an urban architecture with a sense of openness”.

Sudo set back the house’s main entrance, creating a breather from the general urban density with a double volume space. The garage fronts the street as a buffer to the lift core and a guestroom, a wine room and utility functions located on the first storey. On the second floor are the master bedroom and children’s bedrooms, while the basement contains a guestroom, 18m-long pool and gym.

Gathering spaces are revealed on the third storey, where ample windows in the living-dining-kitchen area open the house up to expansive city views. On the rooftop terrace, this openness is magnified with all-round views and plenty of space for lounging and entertaining.

“Despite being in the dense urban centre, the terrace, laid with wooden decking, offers a private outdoor space. At night, the plants are illuminated, providing a relaxing atmosphere,” Sudo commented. A small kitchen here allows for barbecues should the need arises.

There is even a fireplace so that guests can enjoy the mesmerising view of twinkling city lights in cold weather. “Spending time by a fireplace, enjoying the spectacular views of Tokyo Tower and the surrounding skyscrapers, is undoubtedly a luxurious experience,” described Sudo. 

Compared to other parts of the house, the third storey also features higher ceilings that make the space feel commodious. “Roller screens and lighting boxes at the windows are both aesthetically pleasing and functional,” said Sudo. Two sides of the house on this level are set in from the perimeter, creating balconies where plants become a privacy shield and visual respite.

“Enveloped in plants, the spaces don’t feel urban,” Sudo remarked. A large tree in the neighbour’s courtyard forms a pretty composition outside the kitchen window, he added. At the rooftop terrace, plants include herbs for the family’s meals.

Throughout the house, strategically placed openings build connection between the interior and exterior. For example, the hallway where the elevator and staircase are located has large, glazed openings on the east and west direction.

“This allows natural light to brighten each floor and offer views of the city from the upper floors. At the basement’s elevator hall, the pool is visible through glass with natural light pouring in from the plants  on the west side ,” said Sudo.

In the basement, gardens along the perimeter, open to the sky, bringing in light and views. “To avoid the claustrophobic feel of underground spaces, the basement has been designed to mimic a secluded waterfront oasis, ensuring privacy while offering an open space surrounded by greenery and bathed in sunlight from above,” mentioned Sudo.

At the same time, ambient lighting also creates a cosy, cavernous atmosphere that augments the sensation of being underground. In the gym, a fully mirrored wall not only facilitates activities like yoga and weightlifting, it also “expands the perception of the space,” said the architect.

He shared that the children and their friends who visit use the pool sometimes , but the primary users are the owner and her husband. The owner was especially happy with the pool. “She used to swim 10km frequently in public pools when she lived in New York, and expressed delight that this activity is available to her in her private home in Tokyo,” said Sudo.

Sudo’s carefully planned layout means even areas deeper in the house  enjoy some daylight and a sense of openness. For example, the master bedroom suite faces the street, so it is closed up with a blank wall. Sudo set in a corner of the block to create a small balcony for the adjacent walk-in wardrobe and master bathroom. When the two sliding doors between the bathroom and bedroom are opened, the latter enjoys the natural light that spills in from the balcony windows.  Another window in the master bedroom is placed above the main door, facing the double-storey entrance foyer. A metal mesh, flushed to the front facade, affords privacy.

The strict form of the orthogonal house form is emphasised by minimal materials. But the ample plants poking out of the balconies bring some softness to the hard edges.

Sudo chose materials that are subtle and tactile, befitting a tranquil domestic environment that contrasts with the glossy, artificial materials cladding the luxury residences and hotels nearby.

For example, the exterior silver-grey silicate paint’s uneven finish offers a sense of depth. “The paint integrates with the concrete, enhancing the surfaces while preserving the natural texture. This accentuates a handcrafted sensibility. The silver layer captures and reflects the surrounding hues, resulting in a distinctive expression where a gradient emerges from the bottom to the top of the building.”

The interior is finished in dark textured tones so that the natural light at the windows is augmented – except the third storey, where white plaster and paint reflect the abundant natural light. Sudo added: “The kitchen is finished with ceramic tiles that matches the wall's colour and enhances durability. ”

After living here since December 2023, the owner and her family are more than satisfied with their new home. Besides the swimming pool, the owners’ other favourite spots are the living room and rooftop terrace. “The rooftop view exceeded their expectations,” Sudo commented. “Given that this area is subjected to building height regulations, the stunning views will most definitely enhance the value of the building.”

The best compliment was when the owner proudly showed off her architect. Sudo shared: “We were honoured to be invited along with the owner’s close friends to her housewarming party, where she graciously introduced us as the architects of her house.”

North Korea says it tested ‘super-large’ cruise missile warhead and new anti-aircraft missile

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea said Saturday it tested a “super-large” cruise missile warhead and a new anti-aircraft missile in a western coastal area as it expands military capabilities in the face of deepening tensions with the United States and South Korea.

North Korean state media said the country’s missile administration on Friday conducted a “power test” for the warhead designed for the Hwasal-1 Ra-3 strategic cruise missile and a test-launch of the Pyoljji-1-2 anti-aircraft missile. It said the tests attained an unspecified “certain goal.”

Photos released by the North’s official Korean Central News Agency showed at least two missiles being fired off launcher trucks at a runway.

North Korea conducted a similar set of tests Feb. 2, but at the time did not specify the names of the cruise missile or the anti-aircraft missile, indicating it was possibly seeing technological progress after testing the same system over weeks.

KCNA insisted Friday’s tests were part of the North’s regular military development activities and had nothing to do with the “surrounding situation.”

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula are at their highest in years, with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un dialing up his weapons demonstrations, which have included more powerful missiles aimed at the U.S. mainland and U.S. targets in the Pacific. The United States, South Korea and Japan have responded by expanding their combined military training and sharpening their deterrence strategies built around strategic U.S. assets.

Cruise missiles are among a  growing collection of North Korean weapons  designed to overwhelm regional missile defenses. They supplement the North’s vast lineup of ballistic missiles, including intercontinental ballistic missiles aimed at the continental United States.

Analysts say anti-aircraft missile technology is an area where North Korea could benefit from its  deepening military cooperation with Russia , as the two countries align in the face of their separate, intensifying confrontations with the U.S. The United States and South Korea have accused North Korea of providing artillery shells and other equipment to Russia to help extend its warfighting in Ukraine.

Stock market today: Asian benchmarks mostly slide as investors focus on earnings

TOKYO (AP) — Asian shares mostly declined Thursday as investors awaited a flood of global earnings reports, including updates from U.S. tech companies known as the “Magnificent Seven.”

Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 slid 1.4% in morning trading to 37,931.81. South Korea’s Kospi dropped nearly 1.0% to 2,649.96. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng gained 0.5% to 17,282.67, while the Shanghai Composite edged 0.2% higher, to 3,049.90.

Trading was closed in Australia for a national holiday, Anzac Day.

Attention is also turning to the Bank of Japan, whose two-day monetary policy meeting started Thursday.

“For the record, heading into tomorrow’s policy decision, exceptional Japanese yen weakness is the agitated elephant in the room for the BoJ,” Tan Jing Yi of Mizuho Bank said in a commentary.

In currency trading, the U.S. dollar rose to 155.46 Japanese yen from 155.31 yen. The euro cost $1.0707, up from $1.0697.

The yen has been trading at 155 yen-levels lately, its lowest level in 34 years. That helps Japanese exporters by raising the value of their overseas earnings, but it also raises the price of imports. Speculation has been growing Japan may intervene to prop up the yen.

On Wall Street, the S&P 500 was virtually flat and edged up by 1.08, or less than 0.1%, to 5,071.63. It had jumped sharply in the first two days of the week to claw back nearly two-thirds of last week’s steep loss .

The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 42.77, or 0.1%, to 38,460.92, and the Nasdaq composite added 16.11, or 0.1%, to 15,712.75.

Tesla jumped 12.1% after saying the night before that it would accelerate production of new, more affordable vehicles , which investors have been hoping will kickstart growth. The announcement helped investors look past the 55% drop in profit that Tesla reported.

Tesla is the first of the group of stocks among the Magnificent Seven to report its results for the start of 2024. The focus is on the small group of stocks because they drove most of the U.S. stock market’s gain last year, and they’ll need to perform to justify their high prices.

Meta Platforms also reported its latest results after trading ended Wednesday. Alphabet and Microsoft will follow it a day later.

The hope is that profit growth will broaden beyond the Magnificent Seven to other types of companies, in large part because a remarkably solid U.S. economy. They’ll likely need to deliver fatter profits if they want their stock prices to rise. That’s because they’re unlikely to get much help from the other lever that can lift stock prices: interest rates.

“A strong earnings season looks likely to help restore market confidence,” according to Solita Marcelli, chief investment officer Americas at UBS Global Wealth Management.

A report Wednesday said orders for machinery, airplanes and other long-lasting manufactured goods were stronger last month than expected. A recent string of such reports has quashed hopes that the Federal Reserve may deliver the three cuts to interest rates this year that it had earlier signaled.

Boeing lost 2.9% despite reporting results that weren’t as bad as analysts feared . The company, which is battling criticism about the safety of its airplanes, said it’s taking steps to improve its manufacturing quality, which has slowed down production.

Teledyne Technologies tumbled 10.9% for one of the market’s largest losses after the seller of digital imaging sensors, cameras and other equipment reported weaker profit and revenue than forecast. It said demand from the industrial automation and test and measurement markets was weaker than it expected.

On the winning side of the market, Hasbro jumped 11.9% after the toy and game company reported better profit and revenue for the latest quarter than analysts expected. It benefited from growth delivered by its Baldur Gate 3 and Magic: The Gathering games, as well as by its Peppa Pig content.

Texas Instruments climbed 5.6% after reporting stronger profit and revenue for the latest quarter than forecast. Boston Scientific was another one of the stronger forces pushing upward on the S&P 500. It rose 5.7% after topping forecasts for profit and revenue.

In energy trading, benchmark U.S. crude declined 15 cents to $82.66 a barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, fell 14 cents to $87.88 a barrel.
