Reacher, a mysterious former Army investigator, is convinced that the authorities have the correct suspect, but he still agrees to work with the sniper’s defense attorney (Rosamund Pike). However, the more Reacher investigates the situation, the less black and white it seems to be.

Jack Reacher returns to enforce his bold brand of justice in the action-packed sequel based on the 2013 novel Never Go Back by Lee Child.

In the films, Jack Reacher, a former soldier and drifter, completes his mission to dismantle a human trafficking organization, he travels to Washington, DC, to meet with his liaison, Major Susan Turner, for dinner. But instead, he runs into her replacement, Colonel Sam Morgan, who tells him that Major Turner has been arrested on espionage charges.

Jack consults with Colonel Bob Moorcroft, her seasoned attorney, who reveals that Major Turner is also under suspicion for the deaths of two American servicemen in Afghanistan. In addition, he informs Jack that a woman has filed a lawsuit against him, claiming that he is the father of her fifteen-year-old daughter, Samantha.

Jack is thrown in jail after being falsely accused of murdering Moorcroft. He realizes that he and Turner are both in the crosshairs of two assassins and that they have been set up. But he comes to her aid, and they make their escape. It doesn’t take long before they figure out that army personnel and a powerful government contractor/arms dealer are involved in a plot.

Additionally, Jack finds out that Samantha is in danger, and he and Turner end up saving her. While they investigate the source of the conspiracy, they decide to keep her safe from the assassin who is after them. What or who can we put our faith in?

Jack Reacher 2 Director Explains Why Tom Cruise’s Sequel Flopped

He's right... but also a little harsh.

It’s kind of funny seeing how Lee Child’s Jack Reacher stories are  succeeding on Amazon Prime Video , because when Hollywood took a shot at adapting the stories, they crashed and burned after only one winning feature. The streaming series Reacher is currently in production on Reacher Season 3 , with viewers praising the approach to the material, and the casting of Alan Ritchson in the lead role. So, what went wrong with the movies, which had Tom Cruise in the lead (and should have worked better than they did)? If you ask Ed Zwick, the director of Jack Reacher: Never Go Back , he’ll tell you that he was the problem . 

Ed Zwick has written a terrific book about his film career called Hits, Flops, and Other Illusions . It’s a terrific tell-all about some major movies we grew up on, and eventually, Zwick gets to his contribution to the Jack Reacher film series. Zwick took over for Christopher McQuarrie , who actually turned Jack Reacher into a formidable adaptation of the Lee Child book One Shot . And when opening up about the experience in the book , Zwick revealed:

‘Jack Reacher: Never Go Back,’ which Tom Cruise and I made in 2016, fizzled at the box office. I blame myself (and my willing accomplice, Don Granger) for thinking the audience might enjoy a mash-up of ‘Jack Reacher’ and ‘Paper Moon,’ when in fact they just wanted more red meat. I had a wonderful time working with Cobie Smulders, and I certainly don’t blame Tom for not being six two — as the novelist Lee Child described his protagonist — and should Tom happen to call about making a third movie together, I’ll definitely pick up.

The Jack Reacher series started behind the eight ball because die-hard fans of the novels instantly thought Tom Cruise was wrong to play the part. Reacher, as we can now see in Alan Ritchson , is meant to be a 6-foot-5 giant – a mountain of a man who deals with problems as bluntly, intensely, and physically as possible. Cruise is ideal for Ethan Hunt. He;s not Jack Reacher. 

Also, as Ed Zwick notes, there’s no real room for nuance in the Reacher stories. He calls it “red meat,” but really, fans of the stories just want hard-hitting action. This is why Alan Ritchson always looks like he has been through the wringer when he shares set visit photos , or talks about the demanding physical nature of the part. 

Not that he’s complaining much… unless you talk to him about filming in Canada . Then he might have some choice words. If you forget what Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher: Never Go Back looked like, revisit this trailer.

And then go rewatch the first two seasons of Reacher , on Amazon Prime Video, while we wait for news on the eventual Reacher Season 3. Since it has been confirmed that Reacher season 3 is adapting Lee Child's Persuader , it is hard not to be curious about who will play the book's gigantic villain, Paulie, in the Amazon series. Serving as the seventh installment in Lee Child's Jack Reacher book series , Persuader presents itself as a revenge story in which the titular character sets out to avenge the death of one of his colleagues. Unlike Lee Child's Bad Luck and Trouble , which was adapted by Reacher season 2, the seventh book does not focus on a high-stakes drama where Reacher gets embroiled in an international conspiracy.

However, Persuader features one of the most compelling and intimidating villains in the Jack Reacher series, Paulie. Paulie, who is one of the two main antagonists in Persuader , is close to 7 feet tall in the original Lee Child novel. Even when it comes to strength and physical ability, Paulie is even more muscle-bound and intimidating than Reacher, making him a worthy opponent to the otherwise invincible character. Paulie's massive stature makes it difficult to find the right actor to accurately portray him on screen, but a few stars may perfectly fit the bill.

Reacher Season 3 Gets Promising Update: When Will It Release?

Reacher fans may have reason to celebrate thanks to a new update on when Season 3 may be released on Amazon Prime Video .

Reacher did not have to wait very long for a renewal update, as Season 3 was confirmed to be filming just before Season 2 began streaming on Prime Video in December 2023.

A January update also confirmed that Season 3 would adapt Lee Child's seventh "Reacher" book ("Persuader") , teasing a thrilling new adventure for the large lone wolf in his adventure.

Reacher Season 3 Filming Update

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter , Head of Amazon and MGM Studios Jennifer Salke and Reacher star Alan Ritchson provided an exciting update about Season 3's release.

Following his filming schedule for Playdate , which ends on Friday, April 19, Ritchson will head back to Toronto, Canada, to finish filming Reacher Season 3.

Salke touched on Amazon's relationship with Ritchson, noting that he has "movies in the works with [them]" along with other ideas. She also hopes to have him in tow "as long as he will play Jack Reacher," which she wants to see for many years to come:

"He’s got movies in the works with us, series ideas. It’s not about the volume but about picking a few really special things. We’ll have Alan as long as he will play Jack Reacher. No end in sight for that, hopefully that’s for a very, very, very long time."

Richston also expressed a duty to the viewers "to explore as many of these books" as he possibly can while sharing gratitude for the team that cast him when he "was a huge risk:"

"I owe it to the audience to explore as many of these books as my body will allow, and I owe it to the people that took a shot on me when I was a huge risk for them. They have given me a real career."

When Will Reacher Season 3 Be Released?

Taking into account that filming for Reacher Season 3 started back in December, even with a break for another project for Ritchson, the new season likely is not far off from finishing its shooting schedule.

Richson also teased that "quite a bit" of Season 3 had already been shot during a chat with Retro Cool Nerd in late December while hyping it to be "the best season yet:"

"People are saying this is gonna be the best season we’ve had yet, and we’ve shot quite a bit, so that’s promising."

He also shared an Instagram post in January showing off his work on Season 3, noting that he was "crustier than ever" as fans saw him covered in mud and grime.

Should Reacher Season 3 finish filming sometime in late spring or early summer, there is still a chance that the new episodes could come to Amazon Prime Video before the end of 2024.

For reference, Season 2 finished its filming in February 2023 before debuting on Prime Video on December 15 . With so much of filming already having finished before Ritchson's temporary departure, much of the new season could already have been edited, speeding up the timeline for Season 3's debut.

The first two seasons of Reacher are streaming on Amazon Prime Video, and Season 3 will return to filming later in April.

Right-Wing 'Reacher' Fans Flip Out After Alan Ritchson Calls Trump A 'Rapist And A Con-Man'

“Reacher” star Alan Ritchson is receiving a whole lot of attention for some harsh words he had for Donald Trump and his devotees.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter published earlier this month, the action star explained why he’s confused by Christians who support the former president.

“Christians today have become the most vitriolic tribe,” said Ritchson, who himself identifies as a follower of Jesus. “It is so antithetical to what Jesus was calling us to be and to do.”

“Trump is a rapist and a con man,” he went on, “And yet the entire Christian church seems to be treat him like he’s their poster child and it’s unreal. I don’t understand it.”

Ritchson’s comments largely flew under the radar for right-wingers, until Trump Cabinet alum Sebastian Gorka addressed the interview during a segment on his radio show “America First” last week.

During his five-minute-plus rant, Gorka told Ritchson to “shut your pie hole” when it comes to “political views” and “keep doing your play acting.”

Many conservatives seemed incensed by Ritchson’s remarks and vowed to boycott “Reacher,” which follows a brawny vagabond ex-Army police officer with a taste for vigilantism.

While the backlash from the MAGA sect was loud, there were also plenty of people who applauded the star for speaking his mind.

Based on the best-selling “Jack Reacher” book series by Lee Child, the show has been an undeniable success for Amazon .

Last December, “Reacher” debuted its second season at No. 2 on Nielsen’s overall streaming charts, with a total of 1.2 billion viewing minutes.

1985's Legend Is a Cult Classic Movie for Tom Cruise Fans

The 1985 fantasy-adventure film Legend had everything going for it. Ridley Scott had made his mark with The Duellists , then turned to science fiction with the Academy Award-winning Alien and the multiple versions of Blade Runner , before aiming at fantasy filmmaking. Tom Cruise had just finished football drama All the Right Moves and was a year away from mega-star status thanks to Top Gun . With tremendous talent in front of and behind the camera, Legend felt like a sure thing.. until it wasn't.

With special effects wizard Rob Bottin ( Robocop ) burying actors beneath prosthetics and Oscar-nominated production designer Assheton Gorton ( The French Lieutenant’s Woman ) creating this world from the ground up, Legend certainly looks amazing. Cinematographer Alex Thomson is also no stranger to fantasy, having been Oscar-nominated for his work on Excalibur . All that creativity, plus an immense amount of money and time, amounts to something -- even if it's not commercial success. Rather, Legend became a cult hit and it deserves all of the appreciation that's been lobbed on it since.

10 Best Fantasy Movies That Aren't Based on Fairy Tales

Tim Curry is the centerpiece around which Legend revolves. A preening, elegant and animalistic creation, his eight-foot-tall villain Darkness is an example of great 1980's practical movie effects . Curry -- encased in a full-body prosthetic -- creates an oppressive presence that dominates Legend from the shadows. Cloven hoofs, manicured talons, and a rich baritone distinguish this denizen of the underworld from the innocence above, while the actor towers over his co-stars. Even though Darkness only appears in the later part of Legend , Curry's performance is the most memorable. He elevates overly elaborate pantomime villainy to legendary status.

When Legend was released in 1985, Curry was best known as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in Frankenstein -inspired The Rocky Horror Picture Show , both on stage and on screen. There is no denying the theatrical element that comes through in his portrayal of Darkness, yet there is nothing camp or melodramatic about it. In fact, considering Legend is in a genre that has traditionally aimed at children, he certainly scares audiences by giving them something grotesque. This shocking difference is hammered home in the film's final act, when animal sacrifice and devil worship throw Legend into freefall. But Curry overshadows Cruise, both literally and figuratively.

Tom Cruise Makes an Early Impression - By Not Making One

The true test of any actor is their ability to make an impression. Legend pushes that idea to breaking point with Tom Cruise, who does less than zero throughout the film. Scott captures him amid pollen with glitter glistening on his skin opposite an equally perfect Mia Sara, and the heightened lovefest between their characters Jack and Lili lasts throughout the movie. Nothing more is asked of Cruise acting-wise, apart from the occasional action sequence; Legend is far from the best Tom Cruise performance .

However, there still are glimpses of the movie star he would become. Cruise has an on-screen presence that is impossible to mimic. He may not make a wonderful impression like other fantasy movie heroes, but he walks away from Legend almost unscathed. That's impressive, since at one point he faces off against a towering Tim Curry wrapped in bright red skin and brandishing a broadsword. Less than a year after Legend , Cruise was winning over film audiences as Lt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in Top Gun -- proving how much bigger he was than any one movie.

Legend's Uneven Story Kept It From Being a Box Office Hit

There is no denying that Legend lacks a story of any substance . There is so little for audiences to hang onto dramatically that the movie soon becomes an exercise in artistic appreciation. Scenes either feel stretched out too long or lack meaningful dialogue, and writer William Hjortsberg ( Angel Heart ) turns every fairy exchange into rhyming couplets that soon become distracting. But that's not the only way in which the movie wanders off in its own direction -- feeling more like an arthouse film than anything else.

Between the endless shots of Lili running in slow motion, or Jack breaking through sheet ice as the world is plunged into darkness, Legend loses its way. Moments of visual genius are overshadowed by artistic overindulgence, meaning that scenes simply do not work. Whether the fact that the movie's primary set burned down affected the finished product is up for debate, but Legend suffers from tonal inconsistency throughout. Thankfully, Bottin and his team of visual effects boffins manage to turn this turgid trifle into a cult classic, thanks to some groundbreaking techniques.

How Did Legend Become a Cult Classic?

From another cult hit in John Carpenter's The Thing to winning an Oscar for Total Recall , Rob Bottin has elevated every movie he touches. In the case of Legend , he designed, implemented, and engineered some of the most intricate practical effects ever seen on film. He was rewarded for his efforts with another Academy Award nomination in the Best Makeup category. Beyond the creation of Darkness, Bottin also brought to life another creature ripped from the pages of a fairy tale nightmare called Meg Mucklebones, played by future Star Trek fan-favorite Robert Picardo.

Encountered by Jack on his way to the underworld, Meg is a marvel of prosthetic make-up and hydraulic invention. Buried beneath this terrifying disguise, Picardo embraces his inner swamp monster. Gnarled, nasty and after a tasty morsel, Meg Mucklebones is the perfect combination of visual effects and acting prowess. Her leering over her intended victim surrounded by a putrid bog is one of the most powerful moments in this disjointed movie.

There is no doubting the ambition behind Legend , which oddly comes off like a cross between Blade Runner and Someone to Watch Over Me . Legend has some of the most impressive visuals Ridley Scott has ever shaped -- including towering trees, woodland glades and awe-inspiring set designs. Those who helped create its world -- including Bottin, Thomson, Gorton and composer Jerry Goldsmith -- made something truly dazzling. Legend might be flawed, but there are elements that shine through the visual distractions, wafer-thin plotline and overly engineered acting. Hiding therein are moments of sheer filmmaking genius. With numerous cuts to choose from and an endless array of interpretations to draw from them, Legend is the cult classic that keeps giving.

In a fantastical realm, a young hero embarks on a quest to rescue a princess and recover the last of the unicorns from a malevolent figure who seeks to plunge the world into eternal night. Joined by allies from the forest, he confronts dark forces in an epic battle to restore balance to the land.
