Browder

Anthony T. Browder knows about all there is to know about African and African American History and Culture. He’s an author, publisher, cultural historian, artist, and an educational consultant. He’s lectured throughout the United States, Africa, Caribbean, Mexico, Japan, and Europe. As the founder and director of IKG Cultural Resources, Browder has spent 30 years researching ancient Egyptian history, science, philosophy, and culture. He is currently director of the ASA Restoration Project, which is funding the excavation and restoration of the 25 th dynasty tomb of Karakhamun in Luxor, Egypt.

Through IKG, Browder hosts lectures, seminars, cultural field trips of Washington, D.C. He also publishes his research through IKG as well as conducts study tours to Egypt, West Africa, South Africa, and Mexico since 1987. Browder’s publications are used in classrooms worldwide.

Here are 10 things you should know about Anthony T. Browder.

Howard Alum

Browder studied at HBCU Howard University’s College of Fine Arts. On his own, he learned about African history. “Browder’s three decades of study have led him to the conclusion that ancient Africans were the architects of civilization and developed the rudiments of what has become the scientific, religious, and philosophical backbone of mankind,” according to the IKG website.

Founded in 1981 by Browder, IKG is an educational organization that is “devoted to the re-discovery and application of ancient African history, culture and wisdom” and “to challenge the distorted perceptions of Africa that are perpetuated in the media and in classrooms worldwide,” according to the website.

IKG hosts lectures, workshops, and conferences that have featured presentations by renowned historians, scientists, psychologists, and scholars discussing aspects of African, African American and world history, culture and philosophy.

Listen to GHOGH with Jamarlin Martin | Episode 60: Jamarlin Martin “Jamarlin goes solo and talks about Facebook’s ban on Minister Louis Farrakhan and whether or not Barack Obama’s pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, was always right. “

Africa Bound

Browder has traveled to Egypt more than 54 times since 1980. Having conducted more than 23 archeological missions to Egypt since 2009, he is the first African American to fund and coordinate an archeological dig in Egypt.

In The Books

Browder is the author of six publications (including the best sellers, “From the Browder File” and “Nile Valley Contributions to Civilization”) and the co-author of six publications, including two written with his daughter, Atlantis Tye.

A First & A Discovery

Browder is the first African American to lead and fund an archeological excavation project in Egypt. “In May 2018, Browder, his daughter Atlantis Tye Browder, and the ASA Restoration Project excavation team discovered 2700-year-old Kushite artifacts that were recently installed in the Egyptian Museum in Luxor,” The Los Angeles Sentinel reported.

Currently, Browder is excavating and restoring two 25th dynasty Nubian Kushite Tombs built 2700 years ago for the Kushite noblemen and priests Karakhamun and Karabasken, the mayor of Luxor and assumed member of the Royal Kushite Family.

Lectures & More

Browder sponsors lectures, seminars, and cultural field trips of Washington D.C., and continues to publish research and to conduct study tours to Egypt/Kemet, West Africa, South Africa, and Mexico.

Browder on “Avatar”

For Browder “Avatar” was more than a film. He said it was full of symbolism.

“As an African-American male, I’m always very conscious of how we’re depicted,” Browder told AL.com after a lecture he gave at Alabama A&M University campus. “A lot of my friends and family members get sick of me sometimes because films that they like, I tell them why I didn’t like the film.

“African-American males, specifically, are shown in a demeaning light. If we don’t voice our displeasure with something, people will continue to do it.”

But he was impressed with “Avatar,” the highest-grossing movie in history, surpassing “Titanic,” another James Cameron film.  “The film is about race,” Browder said. “But it’s not a racist film.”

“I saw over and over again that Cameron was making a conscious effort to depict aspects of African and indigenous culture in this film,” Browder said after the lecture. “That gave me greater respect and appreciation for Cameron as a filmmaker and a writer.”

Explaining Agitprop

At the same Alabama A&M  lecture, Browder explained “agitprop” — a combination of propaganda and agitation used to influence moviegoers.

“Propagation acts on the mind,” Browder said. “Agitation acts on emotion.”

According to Browder, director James freely used “agitprop” in making “Avatar.”

“It’s a common Hollywood tool, Browder said, pointing to such movies as ‘Gone With The Wind,’ ‘Network,’ ’Platoon,’ and ‘Michael Clayton’  as being films where ‘agitprop’ is prevalent,” AL.com reported.

Field Trips

Browder’s IKG offers several tours, including: “Secrets Hidden in Plain Sight,” which unveils the ancient African culture and influence is found in and around DC; “Study Tour in Egypt,” an annual trip to the Nile; and “Excavation in Egypt,” an ASA Restoration Project was established in 2008 to honor the work of Dr. Asa G. Hilliard, III and support the archeological research of South Asasif Conservation Project, which she directs.

Egyptologist Dr. Anthony ‘Tony’ Browder tells it like it is

The Torch met with Anthony ‘Tony’ Browder via Zoom in anticipation of LCC’s virtual event, Putting the African in Black History Month.

Browder is the first African American to fund and coordinate an archeological dig in Egypt. He is the founder of IKG Cultural Resources and has lectured around the world.

Born and raised in Chicago, Browder moved to Washington D.C., to attend Howard University over 50 years ago.

“Chicago when I was growing up was the most racially segregated city in the United States. So coming of age in the 1960s left an indelible impression on me and shaped the way I negotiate,” Browder said.

On February 21, 1977, Broward heard Dr. Ivan Van Sertima for the first time, and it changed his worldview. Sertima had just published his book They Came Before Columbus ,” and Browder realized how little he learned about Africa in school.

“Sertima talked about ancient Egyptians who navigated the Atlantic Ocean and brought technology and culture to the Americas 2,500 years before Columbus. He said that the ancient Egyptians were Black. That was the first time in my life I had ever heard anyone say that the ancient Egyptians were Black. It contradicted everything that learned,” Browder said.

Browder realized early in life that if he was going to make a difference, he would have to assume responsibility for doing that himself. “I began to do the things that gave my life meaning, and that was learning about African history and culture,” Browder said.

Browder founded IKG Cultural Resource Center 39 years ago. “EKG had led to me writing, organizing conferences, lectures and seminars. It culminated financing my excavation of three tombs in Egypt for the last 12 and a half years,” Browder said.

The Torch then asked Browder the hard question: How do we get Black people to embrace this knowledge?

“You get black people or any people, in general, to embrace this information by presenting it to them in an easy-to-understand and digestible manner,” Browder said. “Repetition, repetition, repetition.”

“Find ways to pique their curiosity, then lead them to information that will expand their curiosity until they find something they admire, and they will take a greater interest,” Browder said. “For me, it’s simply a matter of opening the door and reaching out to those people who are ready to learn.”

“My very first book, From The Browder File, is still a perennial bestseller after 34 years,” Browder said. “It’s a good beginner book. It’s 22 short essays with a bibliography at the end of each essay.”

“If you don’t know yourself or who you are, you can harbor feelings of inferiority,” Browder said. “One of the most important things you can learn to do as a person of African ancestry is to know the history of your people.”

“Not just the struggles of your people here in America over the last 401 years. But to know what we did 4,001 years ago,” Browder said. “That requires that you invest some time in yourself.”

Browder is LCC’s special guest for a virtual event Thursday, February 18, at 730 p.m. For more information, email Dr. Lawrence A. Rasheed [email protected].

Howard university alumnus anthony browder shares insights as first to direct egyptian archeological excavation funded by african americans.

tony browder egypt tour

WASHINGTON, D.C. (December 5, 2018) — Howard University alumnus Anthony Browder, Ph.D. has been leading groundbreaking work in Egyptian archaeology as the first African American to fund and coordinate an archaeological dig in Egypt. Browder is director of the ASA Restoration Project, which recently celebrated its 10th year, and is responsible for the excavation and restoration of the 25 th dynasty tombs of Karabasken and Karakhamun in Luxor, Egypt. This year, his excavation team discovered 2700-year-old Kushite artifacts that were installed in the Egyptian Museum in Luxor on August 19.

“The ASA Restoration Project is named after Dr. Asa Grant Hilliard, III who was instrumental in shaping my development as a young man, father, and researcher,” says Browder. “We’ve funded three quarters of a million dollars to fund archeological excavation in Egypt. Working in concert with the Egyptian government and Egyptologist Elena Pischikova, we have now proven that the 25 th Dynasty, the only dynasty in Egyptian history that contemporary Egyptologists acknowledge as a “negro” dynasty, were responsible for innovations that were credited to the 26th and 27th dynasties.”

tony browder egypt tour

“In 1987, we started doing lectures at the Harambe House, which is now the Howard bookstore. We did our lectures there for about a year and a half until we outgrew the space,” says Browder. “The Howard University Blackburn Center and other departments helped to coordinate tours for visitors and students. Another beautiful thing about the evolution of my career is that it really coincided with Howard University Television.”

Browder explains how WHUT programming and the presence of African American journalists on Howard’s campus who were impacting Washington, D.C. media helped facilitate a growing interest in the D.C. metropolitan area. Browder credits shows like “For The People” that aired on WHUT and publications like The Washington Afro-American newspaper for helping to promote a renewed interest in African-centered knowledge.

“In January 1993, we held a three-day event at Cramton Auditorium with a special tribute to Listervelt Middleton, the host of “For the People”. We raised $40,000 cash from over 900 people,” says Browder. “This was one of the highlights of my career and in my relationship with Howard. It definitely helped to increase my following, and helped popularize African American history.”

In 2002, Browder’s company began sponsoring annual Kemetamorphosis Conferences. The term “kemetamorphosis,” was coined by Lisa Douglass and refers to the process of evolution and transformation through learning about Kemet (Ancient Egypt). Sharon Pringle, Howard University alumna and co-founder of the conference , co-hosted the very first conference at Howard’s Blackburn Center after joining a study tour to Egypt with Browder in 2000.

The IKG Cultural Resource Center will sponsor the 2018 Kemetamorphosis Conference from Dec. 7 — 9 at the Thurgood Marshall Center in Washington, D.C. The conference will feature a powerful lineup of guest speakers including Browder and celebrity author, performing artist and human rights activist Jennifer Lewis.

“We have to be totally cognizant of the fact that Egypt is the oldest civilization known to mankind and the longest existing civilization in the history of humanity. It thrived for 3,000 years,” says Browder. “Anyone who is a student of African American history knows that during the time of slavery it was illegal for people of African ancestry to read or write, and the past was erased. The work we are doing is modeling for ourselves and our children what we can accomplish when we choose to assume responsibility, to love ourselves and love our history.”

(Black PR Wire) — Washington DC’s own, Anthony “Tony” Browder makes history as the first African American to lead and fund an archeological excavation project in Egypt. In May 2018, Mr. Browder, his daughter Atlantis Tye Browder, and the ASA Restoration Project excavation team discovered 2700-year-old Kushite artifacts that were recently installed in the Egyptian Museum in Luxor. Mr. Browder and his team are continuing the difficult work of bringing to light ancient knowledge that will dramatically change our understanding of Nile Valley history and culture forever.

A Rich Legacy

Anthony Browder has an extensive portfolio as a celebrated cultural historian, Egyptian archeologist, author, and educational consultant. He is a Howard University graduate who lives in Washington DC. Two of his most recent noteworthy accomplishments include the 10-year anniversary of the ASA Restoration Project and the upcoming 2018 Kemetamorphosis Conference.

ASA Restoration Project Celebrates its 10th Anniversary

This year is the 10th anniversary of the ASA Restoration Project that was established to honor the late Dr. Asa G. Hilliard III, an esteemed psychologist, historian, master teacher, and author who was internationally recognized for his outstanding scholarship regarding ancient Egyptian history.

Following in the tradition of Dr. Hilliard, Mr. Browder and his team have made significant discoveries that will change our understanding of Egyptian history and culture:

He is currently excavating and restoring two 25th dynasty Nubian Kushite Tombs built 2700 years ago for the Kushite noblemen and priest Karakhamun and Karabasken the mayor of Luxor and assumed member of the Royal Kushite Family.

Karakhamun’s Tomb is over three times the size of King Tut’s tomb and contains priceless literary and architectural treasures.

Atlantis Browder was the first African American to enter Karakhamun’s burial chamber; where a 20,000-pound, red granite sarcophagus was discovered.

This year he discovered a complete set of limestone canopic jars in the Karabasken Tomb of a Kushite princess known as “Amenirdis-Lady of the House” that are on display in the Luxor Museum in Egypt.

Mr. Browder’s work is celebrated throughout the world from Egypt to America as the first African American to engage in such a historic undertaking.
