Acer Predator Orion 7000 (2023) review

This noisy rtx 4090-powered beast is great for 4k gaming.

Tom's Guide Verdict

The Acer Predator Orion 7000 (2023) delivers killer gaming performance at 4K when equipped with top-tier internals like an RTX 4090—but all that power comes with a high price and lots of fan noise.

Great 4K gaming performance

Beautiful, easy-to-open case

Hot-swappable drive on top is great

Obnoxiously loud fans

Outperformed in some areas by cheaper PCs

The Acer Predator Orion 7000 ($3,799 to start) is Acer's premier gaming PC, and the new 2023 model has arrived with the latest Nvidia GeForce RTX 4000 series GPUs and Intel Raptor Lake 13th Gen chips.

After spending a week with a top-tier 2023 model I'm confident the Orion 7000 remains a great gaming machine—and you should expect no less when you're paying nearly $ 4k or more for the privilege of owning one.

And while the Orion 7000 looks as imposing as ever in its all-black chassis, the fans get so loud there's no chance you'll be able to sneak in gaming time without everyone in the house knowing because this machine gets loud. The configuration we tested is one of the loudest gaming PCs I've ever reviewed, and our testing team agrees. You'll likely hear this PC before you see it, even when it's sitting idle.

But if you can stomach the loud fans and eye-watering price tag, I'm pleased to report the Acer Predator Orion 7000 (2023) remains one of the best gaming PCs you can buy—here's why.

Acer Predator Orion 7000 review: Price and availability

  • Predator gaming PCs start at $1.2k, Orion 7000 series starts at $3.7k
  • Our top-of-the-line Predator Orion 7000 review unit costs a cool $4.5k

The Acer Predator Orion 7000 is the top dog in Acer's Predator series of gaming desktops, and you can buy one at Acer's website as well as at third-party retailers like Amazon.

A new Predator Orion 7000 can be yours for as low as $3,799, which is hardly cheap. But you get what you pay for, because that model comes with a liquid-cooled 13th Gen Core i7 CPU, an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080, 32GB of DDR5 RAM, a 2TB HDD and a 1TB SSD for storage.

Acer Predator Orion 7000 on a desk, side on

The PC we reviewed is even more powerful, which explains why it costs nearly $5k. Our Acer Predator Orion 7000 (2023) review unit arrived with a liquid-cooled Intel 13th Gen Core i9 CPU, an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card, 32GB of DDR5 RAM and the same 2TB HDD/1TB SSD storage arrangement.

If you were to buy the same machine yourself direct from Acer it would cost $4,499, which is a lot to drop on a new PC. But you get your money's worth from this machine if you're planning to play the latest games at 4K resolution or higher, as this review will show.

Acer Predator Orion 7000 review: Design

The Acer Predator Orion 7000 series PCs have traditionally been housed inside big, monolithic full tower cases, and the 2023 model is no exception.

I'm a big guy, and even I have to take a deep breath and brace myself before hefting our Acer Predator Orion 7000 review unit to move it around during the setup process. The tall, deep tower cases measures roughly 19.9 x 19.1 x 8.6 inches, so it takes up quite a bit of space on a desk. While I did set it up and use it as a literal desktop during the review process, I much prefer keeping it tucked away underneath the desk.

Acer Predator Orion 7000 (2023) review unit on a desk

Speaking of, the Predator Orion 7000 case remains a gorgeous piece of work. The tempered glass panels on the side and front give you an enticing view of the innards, which are illuminated with customizable RGB lighting and cooled by fans at the top and rear of the case.  The glass panel is easy to open when you want to get inside the PC, though you do need to unscrew a pair of screws on the rear first.

The big fans at the front, top and rear of the case do a great job of looking cool as they cool your PC, though they do get incredibly loud under heavy load.

Acer Predator Orion 7000 review: Ports and upgradability

  • Plenty of ports on front and top, but still not enough USB-C jacks
  • Top-mounted hot-swappable drive is a nice touch

The Acer Predator Orion 7000 offers a plethora of ports, as befits a PC of this size and price.

Acer Predator Orion 7000 (2023) review unit on desk, rear facing camera

The lion's share of the ports are mounted on the rear, including two USB 2.0 Type-A ports, three USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports, three more USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports, and a single USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port. There's also an RJ-45 Ethernet jack and a triptych of audio ports for microphone, audio in and audio out.

The  Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card in our review unit gives it an additional four ports for hooking up displays: 3 DisplayPorts and a single HDMI out.

Acer Predator Orion 7000 (2023) review unit on desk, interior showing

Up front you'll find a complement of USB ports and audio in/out for easier cable routing, as well as a hot-swappable drive bay. Specifically, there's a set of 3 USB 3.2 Type-A ports (one Gen 1, the other pair Gen 2), one USB Type-C port, a microphone jack and an audio out.

Acer Predator Orion 7000 (2023) review unit on desk

There's also a USB3.2 Gen 2 Type-C hot-swappable drive bay on the top of the case, which is a nice bonus that lets you quickly swap SSD drives without much trouble. If you're the type of person who likes to keep a drive full of your Steam games handy, this PC case makes it easy and fun to quickly swap them out.

Acer Predator Orion 7000 review: Gaming performance

  • Great for 4K gaming
  • Demolishes any game at 1080p

The Acer Predator Orion 7000 we received for review is great for 4K gaming and an absolute monster at any lower resolution, to the point that if you've got a 1080p monitor you can likely count on getting 100+ frames per second in your favorite games.

That's the least you should expect from a gaming PC that costs nearly $5k, of course. I'm pleased to report our Orion 7000 review unit had no trouble running all my favorite Steam games at 4K resolution with all the settings cranked to max, though I sometimes had to rely on Nvidia's DLSS upscaling tech to get great 60+ FPS framerates in demanding games running at 4K.

Acer Predator Orion 7000 (2023) review unit on desk playing Cyberpunk 2077

Case in point: Even our beefy, expensive Acer Predator Orion 7000 review unit struggles to maintain 30-40 FPS when running Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K with all the graphical settings cranked to max and no help from DLSS. But when I flipped on DLSS 3 the game began running at a smooth 60+ FPS, with barely any noticeable change in image quality.

But even without a boost from Nvidia's upscaling tech, our Orion 7000 unit is a bona fide beast in the gaming department. Our performance testing lab put it through its paces by running benchmarks for a variety of games at both 1080p and 4K resolutions, and as you can see from the results (charted below) it demolishes most games at anything below 4K.

To give you a sense of what kind of power you're getting for the (admittedly eye-watering) price we charted the performance of our 2023 Acer Predator Orion 7000 against the performance of the Alienware Aurora R15 I reviewed earlier this year, which costs roughly the same and has basically the same components inside. I also included the performance test results from last year's Orion 7000 with its 3090 and 12th Gen Intel CPU, to give you a sense of what kind of performance boost you're getting from the 4090 over last year's model.

As you can see, it's quite a boost. Even in 4K our Orion 7000 managed to deliver a steady 100+ FPS in games like Assassin's Creed Valhalla, DiRT 5, Far Cry 6 and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, making this a great machine for 4K gaming.

Acer Predator Orion 7000 (2023) review unit on a desk

And when you dial the resolution down to 1080p it can run anything you care to play at incredibly smooth framerates, to the point that we clocked it running Total War: Warhammer 3 at over 250 frames per second at 1080p with all settings cranked to Ultra. When we cranked the settings down to Low just for funsies, this Orion 7000 with its RTX 4090 and 13th Gen Core i9 CPU managed to run the game at an incredible 559 frames per second . If there's a monitor on the market that can refresh that fast, I've yet to see it.

Acer Predator Orion 7000 review: Overall performance

  • More than enough power for most day-to-day work and play
  • Outperformed slightly by a smaller, quieter Alienware Aurora R15

When you're paying upwards of $4k for a PC you darn well expect it to handle day-to-day tasks with ease, and that's eminently true of the new Acer Predator Orion 7000.

I used our review unit for all my work, play and day-to-day tasks for over a week, and not once did I experience any crashes, stuttering or performance issues. This PC arrives running Windows 11 and if you don't mind working next to fans that occasionally sound like jet engines it's a great machine for getting things done.

Acer Predator Orion 7000 (2023) review unit on desk running Windows 11

I could easily imagine someone using the top-tier components inside to power through some video edits or game development work, and our testing suggests it's well-suited to the task.

As you can see from the chart of results below, our Acer Predator Orion 7000 (2023) review unit blows past last year's model yet falls a bit short of matching the performance of Alienware 's smaller, lighter Aurora R15. And while it generally blew past its predecessor, in our drive speed test (which clocks how fast the system drive copies 25GB of multimedia files) the 2023 Orion 7000 was actually slightly slower than the 2022 model (1,233.8 MBps vs. 1,495 MBps).

In every other test, however, our review unit blew past its predecessor. The 13th Gen Core i9 CPU in the Acer Predator Orion 7000 sped through the Geekbench 5.5 multi-core CPU benchmark, earning a score of 21,380. That beats last year's Orion 7000 by a solid 6,000 and gives you an idea of the raw CPU boost you're getting by investing in a machine with the latest 13th Gen CPUs instead of last year's 12th Gen chips.

However, the similarly-priced Alienware Aurora R15 with the same Intel Core i9-13900KF CPU earned a slightly higher score (22,494) in the same test. In day-to-day usage you likely wouldn't notice the difference, but it's worth knowing.

Acer Predator Orion 7000 (2023) review unit on desk

A similar story played out when we put the new Orion through our video encoding test, which times how long it takes the PC to transcode a 4K video file down to 1080p using Handbrake. Our review unit completed the task in 2 minutes and 26 seconds, a solid minute faster than its predecessor. However, it still couldn't quite match the speed (2:17) of the smaller, faster Aurora R15.

Since every PC mentioned in this section is optimized for gaming and costs over $4k these minor differences in benchmark performance shouldn't give you much cause for concern. The Acer Predator Orion 7000 remains an absolute beast in 2023, and while it sometimes falls behind similarly-priced and -specced gaming PCs you should have no trouble using it for both work and play.

However, keep in mind it will get hot and loud even when you're just writing and answering emails, as I discovered while writing this review.

Acer Predator Orion 7000 review: Keyboard and mouse

  • Included keyboard and mouse are unremarkable but nice to have
  • Customizable RGB lighting on both

The Acer Predator Orion 7000 (2023) comes with a wired keyboard and mouse that are serviceable and nice to have. While they can't match the quality of the best keyboards and the best mouse you can buy, the fact that Acer includes them at no cost is a welcome addition.

Acer Predator Orion 7000 (2023) on desk with keyboard and mouse

Both keyboard and mouse sport customizable RGB lighting, and they each offer extra which make them slightly better than basic USB peripherals. The full keyboard has big keys with nice travel that feel satisfying to type on, as well as a row of four media controls. The mouse, meanwhile, has two extra buttons mounted above the thumbrest and a DPI switch for quickly shifting sensitivity on the fly.

Neither is likely to outclass your favorite mouse and keyboard, but having both included at no charge is a nice bit of added value.

Acer Predator Orion 7000 review: Software

  • Little bloatware
  • PredatorSense and PredatorArc are the utilities to pay attention to

The Acer Predator Orion 7000 comes with a pretty clean Windows 11 install marred only by a handful of Acer apps which are easy to ignore or uninstall.

Don't ignore Acer's PredatorArc and PredatorSense apps, though, because those are what you use to customize things like the PC's fan speeds, RGB lighting and overclocking profiles. You'll generally use PredatorSense to dial in these settings on your PC, while the PredatorArc app is for customizing the look and bindings of the included mouse and keyboard.

Acer Predator Orion 7000 review: Verdict

The Acer Predator Orion 7000 has long been one of the company's premier gaming PCs, and the 2023 model we reviewed proves it's still a stylish beast of a machine that will make nearly any game you throw at it look great and run smooth.

Our test results and my hands-on experience prove this rig is great for 4K gaming, because the RTX 4090 and 13th Gen Core i9 CPU inside are powerful enough to deliver silky-smooth 60+ FPS framerates at 4K in just about any game, even with all the settings cranked to the max.

That's still a rare feat in PC gaming, and you start to understand why when you look at the $4.5k price tag on our Orion 7000 review unit. At that price you damn well expect a great PC, and weak points like underwhelming drive speed or obnoxiously loud fans start to feel a bit grating.

If those issues sound like dealbreakers, you might also consider the Alienware Aurora R15. You can get one with the same components as our Acer Predator Orion 7000 review unit for basically the same price, and performs nearly as well in games ( and even better in some performance benchmarks) yet runs quieter and takes up less space on a desk.

But if you've got the cash and don't mind a loud PC, the Acer Predator Orion 7000 is a great choice that can be configured to be a beast of a 4K gaming PC. Those looking to spend less can get plenty of fun gaming at 1080p on a great entry-level gaming PC like the Acer Predator Orion 3000 , but if you want killer framerates at high resolution the 2023 Acer Predator Orion 7000 delivers—you just might want to invest in a good pair of noise-cancelling headphones to go with it.

The acer predator orion 7000 is both power and beauty.

Acer predator orion 7000: two-minute review.

The Acer Predator Orion 7000 is an absolute beau of a gaming machine, with gorgeous RGB lighting and exquisite cable management. Of course, its massive size and heavy weight are also nothing to sneeze at, making it difficult to move around or lift without a second person. Once it’s in place, however, the massive chassis will be most likely under your desk meaning that it shouldn’t be an issue. And it’s designed to pull apart easily for tool-less access to the insides.

The internals aren’t just for show, though they make quite the gorgeous one, as the state-of-the-art fans and liquid cooling system ensure that this PC will never overheat even when overclocking it with high-end titles. And if you need a handy way to overclock and ramp up the fans in response, the PredatorSense feature allows for precise control over both.

Here is the Acer Predator Orion 7000 configuration sent to TechRadar for review:

CPU : Intel Core i7-12700H Graphics : Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 RAM : 32 GB DDR5 Storage :  1TB M.2 PCIe Gen 4 SSD and 2TB 7200RPM SATA III hard drive Optical drive : 2.5-inch USB 3.2 Gen2 Type C hotswap drive bay Ports : 6 USB 3.2 Type-A, 2 USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C, 2 USB 2.0 Type-A, 1 Universal Audio Jack, 1 HDMI 2.1 port, 3 DisplayPorts 1.4a Connectivity : Intel Wireless WiFi 6E AX211, Bluetooth 5.2

In terms of pure performance, the Predator Orion 7000 is a top contender for the best gaming PC you can buy off the shelf out there, with some truly solid benchmark performances. For instance, it completely blows away the Maingear Turbo in both the Geekbench5 and CinebenchR23 benchmarks thanks to its more powerful processor, and it more or less matches the Turbo across the 3DMark suite of GPU tests.

However, those same impressive scores don’t translate to improved gaming performance, since even though the general performance is excellent it doesn’t reach the standards of the Turbo’s extremely high framerates playing the best PC games . But gaming is still effortlessly smooth on the Orion 7000, even when pushing it to the max, so only those running endless benchmarks will notice any nuances in the performance

For all these premium specs and features built into the PC, you’re sure to pay a premium price for them. The setup we were sent will set you back $3000 and includes an Intel Core i7-12700H, Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080, 32GB DDR5 RAM, and 1TB of storage.

The configurations being offered in Australia and UK are quite different from the US ones, with the former offering an Intel Core i9-12900K, Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080, 16GB DDR5 RAM, and 512GB of storage. The latter has an Intel Core i9-12900K, Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090, 32 GB DDR5 RAM, and 1TB of storage. This means that the configurations outside the US are more powerful and expensive machines at the cost of more choices in the configuration.

But considering what’s under the hood, the starting prices are mostly a steal. As, despite falling prices for the best GPUs and best CPUs, these prebuilt and customizable PCs are the best value ways to get your hands on some top-tier specs.

Acer Predator Orion 7000: Price and availability

An Acer Orion 7000 on a desk

  • How much does it cost?  $3,000 (£3,300 / AU$5,500)
  • When is it out?  It is available now
  • Where can you get it?  You can get it in the US, UK, and Australia, though it's difficult due to low stock

As expected from a high-end gaming PC, the Acer Predator Orion 7000 fetches a pretty penny on the market. In the US, the one we received is $3,000, while the cheapest ones in the UK and Australia respectively are priced at £3,300 and AU$5,500, with prices going as high as AU$7,200 for the latter region.

However, considering the chips, cooling system, and aesthetics we would argue that this is a PC worth investing in if you want to essentially future-proof it. There may be Acer promo codes out there to help you save a little more too.

Acer Predator Orion 7000: Design

An Acer Orion 7000 on a desk

  • Stunning RGB lighting and see-through chassis
  • Great port selection and cable management

Watching the glow of the RGB lighting illuminate the RTX 3080, fans, and beautifully managed cables never gets old. Then there’s also the fact that said chassis is built for practicality as well, as it can be pulled apart without the use of tools.

It’s a well-made machine, with a sturdy chassis that houses an excellent port selection. It includes six USB 3.2 Type-A ports, two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports, two USB 2.0 Type-A ports, one headphone jack, one microphone jack, one HDMI 2.1 port, and three DisplayPort 1.4a. Even better, three of the Type-A, one of the Type-C, the disc drive, and the headphone/microphone jack are located at the top front of the chassis for convenience.

The only real complaint against the Orion 7000 is its size and weight. This is a gamer’s gaming PC and as such all that hardware, including the state-of-the-art fans and liquid cooling system, plus the size of the casing itself makes it bulky and hard to transport. We found it requires at least two people to safely move the PC around.

With the powerful combination of fans and liquid cooling, near-perfect circulation is all but guaranteed. We didn’t notice as much as a whisper of heat coming from the PC, and this was on the standard settings without using the PredatorSense tool to further modify the fan speeds. The sound while wearing headphones is phenomenal, crisp and sharp audio that’s perfect for picking up subtle cues or for feeling dropped right in the middle of all the action.

And the fact that it comes with a decent gaming keyboard and mouse is just icing on the cake.

Acer Predator Orion 7000: Performance

An Acer Orion 7000 on a desk

  • No game can stand against it
  • No overheating issues
  • Has ray-tracing, HDR, and more

Here's how the Acer Predator Orion 7000 performed in our suite of benchmark tests:

3DMark: Night Raid: 75,573; Fire Strike: 32,056; Time Spy: 16,938 Cinebench R23 Multi-core: 21,288 points GeekBench 5: 1664 (single-core); 14,050 (multi-core) PCMark 10 (Home Test): 8874 points Total War: Warhammer III (1080p, Ultra): 97fps; (1080p, Low): 272fps Cyberpunk 2077 (1080p, Ultra): 63fps; (1080p, Low): 126fps Dirt 5 (1080p, Ultra): 82fps; (1080p, Low): 255fps

The Acer Predator Orion 7000 is a beast when it comes to playing PC games, no matter how demanding the task is. For instance, we completely maxed out every option in Final Fantasy VII Remake including 4k resolution, HDR , ray-tracing, and 120FPS.

To our extreme surprise, the Orion 7000 exceeded all of our expectations, performing at max 256FPS with all those settings turned on. Meanwhile, it runs Hitman 3 butter smooth, at 84FPS on average for the Dartmoor benchmark, and a whopping 103FPS on average for the Dubai benchmark.

Then there’s the PredatorSense tool, which allows you to both overclock your PC and increase fan speeds to overcompensate for it, to your exact specifications. It’s a great feature that’s incredibly easy to use and customize.

The Orion 7000’s configuration, which is equipped with the RTX 3080 and Core i7, churned out some phenomenal benchmark scores. Not even the Maingear Turbo, which uses a stronger graphics card, could beat this computer.

It’s interesting how the mostly tied or superior scores didn’t translate into superior framerates for the suite of PC games we benchmarked with, compared to the Turbo. Though considering the slight improvement in the chips department it makes sense.

That said, the Orion 7000 is still a high-quality, high-end gaming PC that eats demanding and poorly optimized games for breakfast. And thanks to the well-constructed cooling system, it keeps running smoothly without turning into a furnace under your desk.

  • Processeur Intel Core i9-12900K (3.2 GHz / 5.2 GHz)
  • Carte graphique Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 avec 10 Go de GDDR6
  • 64 Go de SDRAM DDR5 PC4800

Points forts

  • Processeur Intel Core i9-12900K
  • Carte graphique Nvidia RTX 3080
  • SSD 1To + 64 Go de RAM DDR5
  • Performances exceptionnelles
  • Connectiques nombreuses
  • Design engagé mais agréable malgré tout
  • La plupart du temps parfaitement silencieux...

Points faibles

  • Prix très élevé (trop?)
  • Clavier et souris qui ne rendent pas honneur au PC
  • ... Mais parfois très bruyant en mode jeu

Note de la rédaction

This ultra-fast 1440p Acer gaming monitor is an absolute steal at $150

Michael Crider

If you’re looking for a fast, accurate screen to go with your new gaming desktop or laptop, but you’re running a little light on funds (maybe because you just bought a new gaming PC ), this deal is for you. Acer is selling a refurbished 27-inch monitor on eBay for just $150 , $70 off its retail price. And not only is it fast enough for gaming, it’s rocking a high-quality 1440p panel.

The Acer Nitro XV272U V3 offers pretty much everything you could want in a new budget monitor. On top of the 27-inch 2560×1440 resolution, it boasts 180 hertz of refresh and just one millisecond of response time, meaning it’s fast enough to make the latest AAA games shine. And it’s not some cheap VA panel, either: the in-plane switching (IPS) LCD has enhanced color accuracy, so you can also depend on this screen for photo editing or media production.

The monitor is otherwise pretty basic, with just one DisplayPort 1.2 and one HDMI 2.0 port, plus two standard USB-A ports on the side for easy access to some extra gadgets. But it is packing a standard VESA mount , making this a great choice for a multi-monitor setup.

And though it’s marked as refurbished, it’s shipping direct from the manufacturer Acer, with a two-year Allstate warranty included in the price. Fear not. This is a killer gaming monitor deal, and it’s backed up with fine protection.

The best racing games on PC

The best racing games you can play on PC today, from hardcore sims to arcade racers.

Best racing games: Forza Horizon 5

Sim racing games

Arcade racing games.

The best racing games on PC have a rich history, with classics such as Need for Speed and Midtown Madness setting the pace, and more modern games like Forza Horizon 5 and The Crew Motorfest continuing the rich legacy of the genre. Whether you're after a realistic sim or an arcade racer, the options are endless, and we've pulled together all the best racing games you can play right now.

Baldur's Gate 3 - Jaheira with a glowing green sword looks ready for battle

2024 games : Upcoming releases Best PC games : All-time favorites Free PC games : Freebie fest Best FPS games : Finest gunplay Best MMOs : Massive worlds Best RPGs : Grand adventures

We've selected various racing games worth playing, including sims like Project CARS 2, or more offbeat, underrated choices like Driver: San Francisco. Generally, we play it pretty loosely with the definition of 'racing game' to ensure we've got games that appeal to all players—anything with wheels counts. But, even with our blurred guidelines, these games all have one thing in common: they all offer a fantastic driving experience in one way or another.

If you're looking to take your driving simulation experience to the next level it's worth checking out our guide to the best steering wheels for PC .

Best racing games - a red car races on the outside of a track

Release date: 2017 | Developer: Slightly Mad Studios | Steam

This is the racing sim that attempts to do it all: ice racing on studded tires around Swedish snowdrifts. Karting in the Scottish highlands. Rallycross within Hockenheim’s infield section, mud splattering across everything and everyone. LMP1s hurtling through Imola, Indycars defying gravity at Daytona Speedway - and when you really get bored, Honda Civics trying to make it up Eau Rouge without stalling.

More miraculous than the sheer breadth of content in Slightly Mad’s sim sequel is the fact they pull it all off. Loose surface racing feels just as convincing as hitting the track in a road-legal car, and the fidelity it conveys to your hands as you try to bully a car into the apex with its force feedback support is best-in-class stuff. Several racing drivers across numerous disciplines acted as consultants during development, and it really does show. A strong eSports scene is now solidified around Project CARS 2, and such is the depth of simulation that for young aspiring drivers, this might well be a fitting substitute for time on track.

iRacing - an indycar corners on the inside of a track

Release date: 2008 | Developer: iRacing Motorsport Simulations | iRacing

With its regular online racing leagues and meticulous car and track modelling, iRacing is as close to real racing as you can get on the PC.

That also means iRacing is something you need to work up to. It has no meaningful single-player component and, with its subscription fees and live tournament scheduling, it requires significant investment. Oh, and a force feedback wheel is quite literally required here - that's not us saying the gamepad support is poor. The game just won't let you race unless you have a wheel.

But for a certain class of sim racing fan, there is nothing that compares. The very best iRacing players often compete in real motorsport too, and make a career out of eSports sim racing. And having first released now over a decade ago in 2008, it's consistently stayed astride with the latest simulators each year. Quite an achievement.

F1 23

Release date: 2023 | Developer: Codemasters | Steam

Rather than redefining what the F1 racing experience feels like, F1 23 reinforces what makes the series worth playing in the first place. It's a fast-paced, technical racer with enhanced AI racers that make your time on the track more tense—able to push you to your limits. Paired with its photorealistic environments, it's incredibly easy to sink yourself into the world of F1 racing in the newest release.

The return of the iconic Braking Point story is a welcome addition to F1 23 as well. Even though you're probably questioning how much there is to do with a Formula 1 story, F1 23 offers a narrative that is as engaging as it is exhilarating, much like the original story found in F1 21. Despite there being a lot of similarities between the original Braking Point, which long-term players will recognise, F1 23 manages to offer some originality through its characters, which present more convincing responses than before and help you feel more connected to the story.

Assetto Corsa Competizione

Best racing games - racing in first person

Release date: 2019 | Developer: Kunos Simulazioni | Steam

To be brutally honest, the sim racing world probably wasn’t on the edge of its seat for an officially licensed game of the Blancpain World Endurance series. As motorsport licenses go it’s a bit on the niche side, but as it turns out it was just what the Assetto Corsa franchise needed.

Kunos Simulazioni’s 2014 game had a lot going for it, including a handling model to rival the very best and excellent wheel support, but there wasn’t much singleplayer structure. As for polish, forget about it. What this license gives its successor is an inviting championship structure with different vehicle categories and highly scalable endurance racing across treasured circuits like Paul Ricard, Spa Francorchamps and Circuit de Catalunya. The handling is better than ever through a good force feedback wheel, and it nails the day/night cycles - a must for an endurance racing sim, really.

Read more: Assetto Corsa Competizione is a rigorous, authentic racing sim, but only the hardcore need it right now

Best racing games - side view of racing motorcycle in motion

Release date : September 2018 | Developer : Milestone | Steam

Two wheels might be considered blasphemy in some corners of the racing community, but for all those willing to divide the usual wheelbase by half, Milestone’s licensed MotoGP sim offers quite a rush.

Motorcycle racing is inherently exciting - the lean angles, suicidal overtakes and acceleration rates just make for a great spectator sport. And Italian superbike specialists Milestone really nail that feeling of terror and bravery of being on a factory MotoGP bike. The Codemasters F1 games are obviously a big inspiration, to put it politely, but the upshot for anyone playing it is a layer of career simulation on top of the racing. Work your way up through slower categories, build a reputation, and hold out for that big team ride.

RaceRoom Racing Experience

Best racing games - three cars astride race on a track towards the camera

Release date: 2013 | Developer: Sector3 Studios | Steam

This is the descendant of SimBin's once-mighty racing empire. Think of it as GTR Online: it's the ruthlessly-authentic car sim you remember, but retooled for online free-to-play. The GT racing is beautifully modelled and captured through a good force feedback wheel, the online competition fierce and well-structured, and the catalog of cars and tracks deep enough to really specialise in a certain series thanks to that free-to-play model.

...Which is also its weakness. Once you get the cars on the track, it's all terrific and familiar. But off-track, RaceRoom is all about selling you bits and pieces of the game. Pick a series you want to race, and immerse yourself in it. There's more than enough to learn about vintage touring cars to occupy you for months, if not years, before you need to go dribbling over the in-game store menu again.

Read more: RaceRoom Racing Experience: Simbin's attempt to leave no vroom for improvement

Best racing games - stock cars racing around a track

Release date: 2012 | Developer: Image Space Incorporated | Steam

rFactor will probably always feel rough around the edges, but it's the heir to one one of the PC's great racing games and one of the most impressive modding communities in the world. rFactor 2, like its predecessor, just keeps growing even years after launch as new car and track packs come out across all kinds of different series. It's not a cheap habit, but it will please serious racers.

That's only half the story, though. The sheer volume of user-created mods is enormous, and while the focus is on Formula One throughout the years those with an itch to be scratched in DTM, WTCC, GT racing and other open wheelers will be satiated too.

Grand Prix 3

Best racing games - an in car view of an indycar

Release date: 2000 | Developer: Microprose

Venerated for decades and still playable in 2019, Grand Prix 3 was a turning point in racing games. Geoff Crammond’s MicroProse had already made waves with Formula One Grand Prix and Grand Prix 2 in the early ‘90s, but hardware limitations meant they could only push the simulation so far at the time. Grand Prix 3 was a new level of fidelity. It modelled things like tyre wear, wet weather grip, and tiny setup tweaks - things that games had only been able to approximate in the broadest manner previously. Simply put, it felt like sitting inside a Formula One car.

And to look back on today as a playable museum piece, it has the added incentive of capturing the sport at an especially exciting time, when legends like Schumacher and Hakkinen were battling for top spot and previous champions Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve struggled at the back of the pack. It’s also been modded to high heaven in the 19 years since it’s release, so with committed googling you can play through nearly two decades of F1 history.

The Crew Motorfest

Cars racing along an island road in The Crew Motorfest.

Release date : 2023 | Developer : Ivory Tower | Epic

The Crew Motorfest brings better vehicle handling and more detailed graphics than previous The Crew games, which helps to put it above the rest. Although we argued in our review that there is a decent amount of Forza Horizon mimicry throughout the game, that doesn't stop it from offering a lively racing experience that's worth picking up. Sure, its overly-enthusiastic voice cast may seem a bit intense when you start, but before long you'll be using their encouragement to perform at your very best.

As we stated in our review , the game is at its best when it "dares to do something that Horizon doesn't" through its use of playlists that transform the landscape in response to the theme of your current challenge. These offer a variety of beautiful environments to help keep your time on the track exciting, while also putting your driving to the test since you don't know what may lurk around each twist and turn.

Forza Horizon 5

Forza Horizon 5 - a car speeds by with the sun's glare in the background

Release date: November 5, 2021 | Developer: Playground Games | Steam , Microsoft Store

With Phil's review of Forza Horizon 5 , he zooms in on the level of refinement that's taken place in the Forza series. No sweeping changes have been made in the newest entry in the series, but a meticulous level of craftsmanship is on display. The Playground team has spent countless hours polishing the hoods of 500 cars until they gleam, and the same is true of the environments in the new setting: Mexico.

The seasonal playlist is present and prominent from the beginning, forming the heart of the gameplay. You'll find yourself taking on unexpected challenges, and utilizing your entire stable of cars in pursuit of new rare additions, as Phil put it: "We've had plenty of looter shooters, but Forza Horizon is slowly turning into the first looter racer."

Dirt Rally 2.0

Best racing games - a rally car races in an autumn forest

Release date: 2019 | Developer: Codemasters | Steam

The first Dirt Rally was a revelation when it arrived in 2015, departing from the snapback caps and energy drink ads that erstwhile came to define the Dirt series and renewing its focus on the staggering challenge of - well, just keeping a car on the track of a rally course. Dirt Rally 2.0 does that too, and its’ better at it in every way.

Rallying is an incredibly high-skill discipline, and Codemasters don’t ask any less of you than a real 4WD WRC vehicle would. At least, that’s how it feels - in truth none of us have firsthand experience of how it feels to fling a Citroen through Finland’s dirt roads as quickly as Sebastien Ogier can do it, nor will we ever. But the transfer of weight in Dirt Rally’s cars, the feeling of raw power while the wheels scrabble for traction under you, feel utterly convincing.

Forza Motorsport

Forza Motorsport best cars

Release date: 2023 | Developer: Turn 10 Studios | Steam

Forza Motorsport is a step up for Turn 10's storied series. Even if the series isn't as absurdly varied and full of personality as the Horizon spin-offs, Motorsport is one of the best pure racing games around. Vehicles here have a newfound weight which feeds into a more detailed experience since you'll have to consider things such as traction and wear on your tires depending on where you are. Everything just feels more precise than it did in Forza Motorsport 7.

As we stated in our review of Forza Motorsport, the handling is absolutely wonderful, which is where this game excels. Driving feels fast and fluid both on and offline, and you feel immersed in the landscapes you're speeding through, which marks a fantastic racing game. Races feel tense and exhilarating, and you feel in complete control of your vehicle at all points which helps drive you (no pun intended) to beat your own records.

TrackMania 2

Best racing games - low angle view of race cars coming down a half pipe

Release date: 2020 | Developer: Ubisoft Nadeo | Steam , Ubisoft Store

Almost a decade after the release of Trackmania 2, Ubisoft Nadeo debuted its semi-reboot of series with Trackmania 2020. The new game features some significant graphical upgrades, but the real treat is the addition of daily featured tracks, new track pieces like ice, and improved checkpointing. Most importantly, it's a fresh start for Trackmania detached from Nadeo's strange Maniaplanet platform.

But don't worry, Trackmania is still incredibly weird. I've already played tons of nonsensical tracks that require pinpoint timing, endless repetition, and a little bit of luck. Nadeo is also taking a more hands-on approach to post-release content by releasing new tracks made by the studio on a seasonal basis. Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit

Best racing games - police supercar chases a racer

Release date: 2010, 2020 (Remaster) | Developer: Criterion Games | Steam (Remastered)

Hot Pursuit is a driving game frozen in a particularly special time for arcade racers. The purest essence of Need for Speed before the series went all open-world, it delivers exactly what the title promises, in race after race, with no downtime. Enjoy the simple life as you aim a European exotic down a stretch of hauntingly beautiful Pacific coast highway with a train of police cars following in your wake.

It's aged like an oak-smoked A-lister too. The roadside textures and car poly counts might not be able to compete directly with the latest releases, but the overall aesthetic in Hot Pursuit still looks luxurious. And above all, fast.

My Summer Car

Best racing games - a tiny beat up car parked in a driveway

Release date: 2016 | Developer: Amistech Games | Steam

At least half your time in My Summer Car is spent outside of a car. In fact, it’s as much a car mechanic game and a simulator of being a teenage layabout in 1990s rural Finland as a racing game per se. It makes its way on this list, however, because for anyone with a passing interest in cars it’s an essential experience.

It all begins with a note from your parents telling you to rebuild the junked car in your garage. From there you construct a driveable, moddable vehicle down to the most minute nuts and bolts, teaching you exactly what an exhaust manifold looks like and what happens when it rattles loose along a lakeside single lane road at 70mph. Car ownership has never felt more satisfying and personal in driving games than in this slightly janky but beautifully esoteric builder-meets-racer.

GRID Autosport

Best racing games - behind-the-car view of racecars in motion

Release date: 2014 | Developer: Codemasters

Autosport is Codemasters' easiest, most entry-level track racing game. The car handling is very forgiving, but with just enough fight in it to teach you the basics of corner-braking and throttle-control. Outside the car it does as deep as you're up for, though. It's got full-race weekends, typically strong opponent AI for Codemasters, and tons of variety in its racing formats.

Although the super-satisfying team management elements from previous Grid games are pared back here (who didn't swell with pride when they finally got that B&O sponsorship in Grid 1?) it's still a great point-of-entry for people curious about sim-style racing, and fun for more hardcore drivers who just want to relax.

Driver: San Francisco

Best racing games - a muscle car zooms down city streets

Release date: 2011 | Developer: Ubisoft Reflections

With a retro-chic ‘70s vibe, one of the best soundtracks in games, and a truly original twist on the open world racer, Driver: San Francisco just radiates style and cool in a way that no other game on this list can match, despite its advancing years.

With the ability to "shift" between NPC cars at-will, Driver:SF is one of the only post-Paradise open-world racers to think of something fresh and new to do with the freedom of the open world. In truth the brilliance of its central idea does outweigh the feel of its handling, which aims for Need For Speed but doesn't quite excite in the same way. It's still rough and ready enough to power a brilliantly odd story and bring San Francisco to life, though.

Split / Second

Best racing games - several cars slide through corner in front of explosions

Release date: 2010 | Developer: Black Rock Studio | Steam

Welcome to the Michael Bay Motorsports Hour, where fake sports cars will rocket through desolate, orange-filtered urban wastelands at blinding speed while drivers accumulate enough energy to trigger bomb-drops from overhead helicopters, vicious sweeps from out-of-control cranes, and even the odd explosion of an entire city block.

Nearly 10 years on, Split/Second remains the perfect chaser to a lot of open-world arcade racers: it's laser-focused on absurd automotive chaos and increasingly improbable tableaus of bloodless mechanical carnage.

Burnout Paradise Remastered

Best racing games - a car races on streets while another crashes

Release date: 2018 | Developer: Criterion Games | Steam

Racing games aren't often treated to remasters. The big franchises iterate so often that there rarely seems much point, but in the case of Burnout Paradise everybody was happy to see an exception to the rule. In 10 years, there's been nothing quite like it.

And yet the original model still surpasses its imitators. It's so much purer and more exciting than the games it inspired. It doesn't have any licensed cars, so instead it features car-archetypes that crumple into gut-wrenchingly violent wrecks. Compare those to the fender-benders that wipe you out in Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Criterion's attempt at topping themselves and where you get the sense that just depicting a shattered headlight would have entailed hundreds of meetings with Lamborghini's lawyers.

Paradise isn't an online "social" experience. It's not all about collectibles and unlocks. You get new cars, but they're not the point of the game. It's about driving around a city populated entirely by cars, listening to a drivetime DJ spin classic and pop rock tracks while you drive hell-for-leather through twisting city streets, mountain passes, and idyllic farmland. It's violent, blindingly fast, and endlessly entertaining. It's created the modern arcade racing genre, but the joke is on us, because all we've done ever since is try to get back to Paradise.

Acer predator orion 7000 (2023) review.

This noisy rtx 4090-powered beast is great for 4k gaming.

Acer Predator Orion 7000 (2023) review unit on desk playing Cyberpunk 2077

Tom's Guide Verdict

The Acer Predator Orion 7000 (2023) delivers killer gaming performance at 4K when equipped with top-tier internals like an RTX 4090—but all that power comes with a high price and lots of fan noise.

Great 4K gaming performance

Beautiful, easy-to-open case

Hot-swappable drive on top is great

Obnoxiously loud fans

Outperformed in some areas by cheaper PCs

Price:  $4,499 as reviewed Processor:  Intel Core i9-13900KF Graphics card:  Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 RAM: 32GB DDR5 Storage:  1TB PCIe SSD, 2TB HDD Accessories:  Keyboard and mouse Ports:  2x USB 2, 3x USB-A 3.2, 3x USB-A 3.2, 1x USB-C 3.2, 1x USB-C 3.2 2x2, 1x RJ-45, HDMI, DisplayPort, audio in/out Size:  19.9 x 19.1 x 8.6 inches Weight:  18-24 lbs

Acer G550 Nitro gaming projector

A relatively speedy projector that's lacking a lot of modern features., our verdict.

A one trick projector made for speed-running and competitive retro gamers. It's got a great refresh rate and low input lag, but very little in the way of future-proofing.

  • Impressive 8.3ms input latency for a projector
  • Smooth 120Hz performance
  • Versatile 2x digital zoom fir long/med throw
  • Good colour accuracy
  • Haven't seen it available in the US
  • No smart features
  • No DisplayPort or USB Type-C
  • Speakers are weak and only produce limited range
  • Super basic keystone correction

PC Gamer's got your back Our experienced team dedicates many hours to every review, to really get to the heart of what matters most to you. Find out more about how we evaluate games and hardware.

The Acer G550 Nitro was designed for speed and smooth frames, and while it does manage to hit that particular mark with flying colours—1.07 billion of them to be exact—there's more to gaming on a projector than speed. Imagine going into a projector purchase expecting all the modern features they come with nowadays, only to end up with an abundance of essentially obsolete ports, a distinct lack of smart features, sub-par sound, and a frankly worrying lamp life rating.

Sadly, this is the story with the Acer G550 Nitro, which only manages to hit a few bars for gaming, and low ones at that. The main takeaway is not to be blinkered by the speedy specs, as there are plenty of non speed-related features users should demand from a gaming projector, nowadays.

Speaking of being blinkered, before we go any further I'll make one thing clear: while you may have spotted 4K in the G550 Nitro's description, this is not a 4K projector. It does support 4K input, but since you have the ability to switch down the output on most input devices to the projector's native 1080p, there's hardly ever going to be a situation where this is useful. There's no upscaling to an approximation of 4K like the BenQ TK700STi does either, just downscaling. Essentially, if you're doing this you're just drawing more processing power than necessary, for what you're getting out of it.

Display Technology: DLP Resolution: 1080p HDR Contrast ratio: 1,000:1 (dynamic) Input Lag: 8.3ms Throw ratio: 1.21 - 1.59:1 Brightness: 2,200 ANSI lumens Lamp Life: 3,500 hours Ports: 2 x VGA in │ 1 x VGA out │ 1 x composite video input - RCA │ 1 x HDMI │ 1 x Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) / HDMI │ 3.5 mm audio 2 x in 1 x out │ 1 x DB-9 │ 1 x USB Type-A │ 1 x 3D sync Size: 313 x 240 x 111mm Price: £421

The G550 Nitro runs pretty warm. Thankfully it doesn't blast out hot air from the back end right into your eyes, and there's actually a warning light to let you know if the lamp temperature is getting too much—all through my hours of testing the light didn't blink once. Sadly, though, the lamp life still doesn't cut it.

When you do the calculations, its 3,500 hours is just shy of two years, provided you use it around 5 hours every night. That's nowhere near the 20,000-30,000 hours you can expect from some of the best gaming projectors we've tested. Acer claims 'extreme economic mode' can push the lamp life up to 12,000 hours, but you still only get a 1 year warranty on the lamp. I also haven't been able to find any replacement lamps in online stores.

Pitting the Acer G550 Nitro against the similarly specced £1,200 BenQ X1300I , sure, you can get it a heck of a lot cheaper nowadays (£420 at time of writing). And while the two are essentially a match with 120Hz refresh rate and 8ms response times, and both come touting HDMI 2.0, the Nitro fails to reach for other important quality-of-life features that the BenQ does.

As for software options, there's not much on the thing itself. To access gaming modes and the like, you need to download the Acer Display Widget to whatever device you're using it with, which is not great if you're on console. There's at least some rudimentary form of keystone correction, but it's so basic compared to many projectors today. Plenty of the competition will even work automatically.

Clever keystone correction and smart features are sort of essential today, and the lack of Android TV is fine if you've got your gaming PC hooked up to it all the time, but if you just want to watch the odd movie on Netflix without switching on your PC, this isn't the projector for you.

That's not least because the built-in speakers are weak enough that you can't hear a thing below 100Hz, or above 15kHz. The brightness and contrast are a little lacking, too. Images can look a little washed out in a room with a fair amount of ambient light; in the dark though, the Nitro does its job well. The colours are vibrant; playing Divinity: Original Sin 2 on it made that abundantly clear, and I was able to see for myself how impressive the low input lag was. Ghosting was pretty minimal, too.

Still, despite the Acer G550 Nitro touting a few impressive qualities that make it great for competitive gaming, there are so many things holding it back in today's market. Simply put, the G550 Nitro is kind of past its prime. It's covered in VGA ports, and even has an old DB-9 port on the back, too. Since these kinds of connections are now phasing into legend, there's a lot of mostly useless gumpf on the back where a preferable DisplayPort or USB Type-C would be sitting in a more modern piece of kit.

Sure, you can pick it up nowadays for a much lower price than its more recent counterparts, but it's not going to last much longer as an option in this era. If you've a one track mind for retro and competitive gaming, this is a nice budget option, but if you want to make the most of your money, spend a little more on something like the Xgimi Halo . The input lag is a little higher, and the refresh rate is capped at 60Hz, but for a couple of hundred quid more, you get something portable, smart and modern, with a much longer lamp life.

Honestly, if Acer thought it could distract me from the Nitro's downfalls by offering a little carry bag and a plastic shield for the lamp, it had another think coming.

Screw sports, Katie would rather watch Intel, AMD and Nvidia go at it. Having been obsessed with computers and graphics for three long decades, she took Game Art and Design up to Masters level at uni, and has been demystifying tech and science—rather sarcastically—for three years since. She can be found admiring AI advancements, scrambling for scintillating Raspberry Pi projects, preaching cybersecurity awareness, sighing over semiconductors, and gawping at the latest GPU upgrades.
