Tour de France 2023 route: Everything you need to know about the men’s and women’s editions

Felix Lowe

Updated 30/06/2023 at 16:07 GMT

A Basque Grand Depart, four summit finishes, the return of the historic Puy de Dôme, and the fewest individual time trial kilometres for 91 years, the 2023 Tour de France route is a mecca for climbers as Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar look set to battle for victory. For the women’s peloton, a penultimate day showdown on the Tourmalet takes centre stage.

Tour de France 2023: The Route

Tour de France 2023

It will be the second time the Tour de France starts in the Basque Country. In 1992, Miguel Indurain won the prologue in San Sebastián.

Stage 1 will be a race of 182 kilometres with five classified ascents, three of which inside the last 45 kilometres. The steep Côte de Pike – 2 kilometres at 10% – marks the finale before a flying descent into Bilbao. After the flamme rouge the road kicks up to 4.6% in the last kilometre.

The 2nd stage is also promising for fast descenders. The 208.9 kilometres route takes in five classified climbs. After the Jaizkibel – 8.1 kilometres at 5.3% – the riders plunge down to the line in San Sebastián.

Stage 3 kicks into gear in Amorebieta to travel to the French part of the Basque country. A bunch sprint in the streets of Bayonne is the most likely outcome.

The racing circuit of Nogaro is expected to see the second bunch sprint in a row at the end of stage 4 , while the Tour enters the Pyrenees as early as the fifth day of action. Stage 5 sets off from Pau to finish in Laruns, where Tadej Pogacar won a five-up sprint in 2020, before Le Cambasque in the mountains above Cauterets will be the end station of stage 6 after a race featuring the Col du Tourmalet. Bordeaux hosts the finish of stage 7 , which is yet another chance for the sprinters.

The 8th stage runs from Libourne to a false flat finish in Limoges before stage 9 heads to the Puy de Dôme department. In fact, the finish will be situated on the volcano with the same name in the Massif Central for the first time since 1988. The final 5 kilometres go up at over 11%.

Week 2 More volcanos are on the menu after the first rest day, as stage 10 sets off from amusement park Vulcania in Saint-Ours-les-Roches and travels through the Auvergne region to finish in Issoire. Stage 11 will see a first ever Tour de France stage finish in Moulins, where Sam Bennett outsprinted Caleb Ewan and Fabio Jakobsen in Paris-Nice 2019. Stage 12 travels on hilly terrain to the Beaujolais vineyards for a finish in Belleville.

What to expect on Bastille Day then? On Friday 14 July the Grand Colombier is going to be the focal point of the 13th stage of La Grande Boucle. Three editions ago Tadej Pogacar took the spoils on the 17.4 kilometres climb at 7.1% in the Jura Mountains, besting Primoz Roglic in a two-up sprint, while the other GC contenders finished close behind.

Morzine returns as the end station of stage 14 . In 2022 it was a starting venue, while Ion Izagirre took the win in the ski resort in 2016 after a daring and rain soaked descent from the Joux Plane. The recipe is the same this time – a Joux Plane descent in the finale – but let’s hope for better conditions.

The day before that Ion Izagirre win in 2016 the Tour finished in Saint-Gervais Mont Blanc. Romain Bardet soloed to victory that day. The ski resort is the end station of stage 15 on the 2023 Tour. The riders face a finish climb of 9.8 kilometres at 8% with the first part the brutal Côte des Amerands.

Week 3 The final week opens with an ITT for climbers. Stage 16 takes in the Côte de Domancy – 2.5 kilometres at 9.4% – before the route continues to climb at more gentle gradients in the last 3 kilometres.

The 17th stage tackles the Col de la Loze – 28.1 kilometres at 6% – in the finale, but not, like in 2020, as the finish climb. That will be a steep ramp at the nearby altiport of Courchevel.

Stage 18 and stage 19 are going to finish in the Bourgogne region before the penultimate – and possibly decisive – stage finish will take place in the Vosges Mountains. The Col du Platzerwassel – 7.1 kilometres at 8.3% – serves as the last climb of Le Tour before ski resort Le Markstein is the end station of stage 20 .

As always, the Tour de France finishes on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. Stage 21 starts at France’s national velodrome in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines.

A brutally mountainous route awaits riders in the 110th edition of the Tour de France next summer while the second Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift heads for a dramatic climax on the summit of the Tourmalet.

The routes for both races were unveiled by the Amaury Sports Organisation in Paris on Thursday, with the rumoured severity of the men’s race confirmed.

The 3,404 kilometre route will tackle all five of France’s mountain ranges and include only 22 kilometres of time trials – suiting the pure climbers but perhaps persuading the likes of Geraint Thomas , Primoz Roglic and Vuelta a Espana champion  Remco Evenepoel  to race the Giro d’Italia instead.

There are eight flat stages for the sprinters – with  Mark Cavendish  hoping to be among them as he chases what would be a record-breaking 35th Tour stage victory.

The 37-year-old Manxman is yet to confirm his team for next season – a scheduled announcement from B&B Hotels-KTM on their plans for 2023 was postponed earlier this week.

But it was the mountain goats who were licking their lips as Tour director Christian Prudhomme unveiled a route which includes four summit finishes – at Cauterets-Cambasque in the Pyrenees, the Puy de Dome in the Massif Central, the Grand Colombier in the Jura and at Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc in the Alps.

Reigning champion  Jonas Vingegaard  was not at the route announcement in person but he would have liked what he heard, while former winner Tadej Pogacar sat smiling in the audience.

In all there are eight mountain stages – including stage 20 from Belfort to Le Markstein which packs five categorised climbs into only 133 kilometres before the peloton heads to Paris.

The only time trial is on stage 16 in the Arve valley, covering 22 kilometres between Passy and Combloux.

“The Tour de France is always hard, isn’t it?” Cavendish said. “I think the start is going to be the hardest one I’ve seen in my career but it’s exciting.

“It will change things up with the (general classification) riders dictating things pretty early on instead of settling in. But if the sprinters can survive the mountains, there’s ample opportunity for real bunch sprints.”

Fellow Brit Tom Pidcock, who won the stage on Alpe d’Huez last year, has his eye on the opening days in the Basque Country.

“For sure there are going to be super hard early stages,” he said. “There are more sprint stages than last year so (the route) is more to the extremes. I’ve not raced much in the Basque Country but I think this terrain suits me.”

The second edition of the relaunched women’s edition, the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, will again begin on the same day the men’s race finishes but this time the opening stage will be far away from Paris, starting and finishing in Clermont-Ferrand in the centre of France.

Over the following week the 956 kilometre race will wind its way south west towards the Pyrenees, with four flat stages and two hilly days before the race is decided over the final weekend.

The highlight will come on the penultimate day with a 90km stage from Lannemezan to the summit of the mighty Tourmalet via the Col d’Aspin, before the overall winner will be crowned after a 22km individual time trial around Pau the following day.

Reigning champion Annemiek Van Vleuten said: “I’m happy to see the famous climbs in the route for next year. The Tourmalet finish is exciting and it’s important they have a big uphill finish on this sort of climb.

“I’m happy to see a time trial in this Tour. Last year was an awesome start and this year they’ve fine-tuned it a little bit and I think they’ve done a good job.”

Lotte Kopecky to skip Tour de France Femmes after Olympics, SD Worx confirm

SD Worx manager Danny Stam confirmed that World Champion Lotte Kopecky will not take part in the Tour de France Femmes this year.

Kopecky was unsure whether she could race the Tour this year because the Olympic Games in Paris finish one day before the Tour de France Femmes Grand Départ in Rotterdam. Winning a medal at the Olympic Games is one of Kopecky's top priorities this season.

"The omnium ends on Sunday afternoon, the Tour starts on Monday morning. It is almost impossible to do that properly," Stam told Sporza .

"Combining those two events would also be a very difficult task mentally."

Kopecky won the opening stage of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift in 2023 and held the maillot jaune until the penultimate stage to the Col du Tourmalet when she lost touch on the final climb and the overall lead passed to teammate Demi Vollering.

At the Tour de France route presentation, Kopecky said she wanted to race the Tour because it has two stages that run on Belgian roads - stage 3 uses part of the Liège-Bastogne-Liège course and stage 4 departs from Bastogne.

"When I see the course, I definitely want to ride. The fact that it goes through Belgium is also a very nice thing. On the other hand, the Tour is every year while the Olympic Games are only once every four years. There are also very nice goals coming up after the Tour, so it is very unclear at the moment," said Kopecky.

"The switch from track to road is not a problem in itself, that is not my biggest fear. The Tour in itself is simply very tough and after such an omnium you have not only been physically very deep, but also mentally."

Kopecky put an emphasis on the Spring Classics this year knowing the decision on whether to race the Tour or not would come after. She won Strade Bianche, Nokere Koerse and Paris-Roubaix this year as well as the UAE Tour Women in February.

Her schedule includes the Tour of Britain Women (6-9 June) and Giro d'Italia Women (7-14 July) before the Olympics in Paris. She will set her sights on the World Championships in Zurich in the latter part of the season.

The Tour de France Femmes route will be unveiled first, followed by the details of the men's route.

Find out how to watch the route presentations with our handy streaming guide.

A little bit of information about the routes has already been made public, of course.

The men's race is set to start in Italy with three stages in Tuscany and a final stage in Nice – moved from Paris due to the Olympic Games.

The women's race begins with a Grand Départ in the Netherlands with the opening stage and then two half-stages held in the country.

Tour de France 2024 routes – All the rumours ahead of the official presentation

Demi Vollering and Jonas Vingegaard

Just a few minutes before the route presentation begins!

The presentation is underway in the Palais des Congrès in Paris.

To start things off, the riders are being welcomed onto the stage.

A long line of riders cross the stage as they're introduced to the crowd.

Bryan Coquard, Erica Magnali, Kevin Vauquelin, Benoît Cosnefroy, Silvia Persico, Audrey Cordon-Ragot among them and they're still coming...

Adrien Petit, Christine Majerus, Alexander Kristoff, Marta Cavalli, Mark Cavendish, Valentin Madouas, Yara Kastelijn, Felix Gall, Ricarda Bauernfeind...

Superstars Jasper Philipsen, Lotte Kopecky, Jonas Vingegaard, and Demi Vollering round out the procession of riders in attendance today.

A quick chat with the reigning champions Vollering and Vingegaard about winning last year's races but nothing revelatory.

Now it's time for some video highlights.

This is the route presentation but as ever there's a lot of faff and build-up before they actually show off the routes...

ASO president Jean-Étienne Amaury is taking the stage for a speech now.

He's talking about this year's Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes, boasting about the audiences and thanking law enforcement for keeping the races on track.

ASO have renewed their partnerships with France TV and Le Credit Lyonnais, he confirms.

He also says that a new trophy will be created for the Tour in honour of the partnership with LCL. That will be unveiled later.

No sign of the routes just yet, obviously.

Now time to thank Vollering and Vingegaard before another video package of highlights from the Tour de France Femmes...

Marion Rousse and Christian Prudhomme will be on stage to present the route of the women's race shortly...

Rousse and Prudhomme take to the stage.

Time for some more chat.

Some talk about the Dutch Grand Départ and now the mayor of Rotterdam, which hosts the opening stage, takes to the stage for a speech.

Speech over and now time for another video, this time around the Netherlands.

Now back to Rousse and Prudhomme for the Tour de France Femmes route!

After the start in the Netherlands, there's a stage to Liège, while the final two days head to Le Grand Bornard and L'Alpe d'Huez!

Here's the route map.

Stage 1, a pan-flat day from Rotterdam to The Hague.

A mountain-top finish at Le Grand Bornard plays host to the penultimate stage. The final climb measures in at 7km and a 5.1% average.

Tour de France Femmes 2024 stage 7 route profile

And here it is – the finale and the queen stage, with the Col du Glandon and L'Alpe d'Huez on the menu on the 150km stage. This is where the 2024 Tour de France Femmes will be decided.

Tour de France Femmes 2024 stage 8 route profile

The Glandon measures in at 19.7km and 7.2% while the famous finale is 13.8km at 8.1%.

Eight stages in seven days across three countries for a total of 946km.

The race is set to run on a later date next year, from August 12-18.

Now the route for the 2024 Tour de France Femmes has been unveiled, we're onto the men's race and yet another long highlight video of the 2023 edition.

We're still going with the highlights... A much-needed refresher on the events of all of three months ago.

Finally, the highlights are done with and now it's time for Prudhomme to get back on stage and give another speech.

A long talk about the Italian Grand Départ now. The race is set to start in Florence.

Now it's onto Italy's history at the Tour.

And now to introduce the Nice finale. The race finishes there this year due to the Paris Olympics. It's a very rare and special finishing stage with a time trial to round out the three weeks of racing.

We're still waiting for the route unveiling...

Finally, the mayor of Nice has finished his speech and now it's back to Prudhomme.

Here we go! It's the route map of the 2024 Tour de France!

It'll be a hilly opener on the road from Florence to Rimini as the riders tackle climbs of the Col de Valico Tre Faggi, the Côte de Barbotto, and the Côte de San Leo, among others. Look out for puncheurs, attackers, and GC men to battle over the first yellow jersey of the race.

Three stages in Italy to kick things off – the opener from Florence to Rimini, a hilly stage 2 from Cesenatico to Bologna which features the famous San Luca climb of the Giro dell'Emilia, then stage 3's sprint day from Piacenza to Turin.

Profiles for the 2024 Tour de France

Stage 4 crosses the Alps. A 138km stage from Pinerolo to Valloire takes on the climbs of Sestriere (39.9km at 3.7%), the Col de Montgenèvre (8.3km at 5.9%), and the Col du Galibier (23km at 5.1%).

Sprint stages follow on stages 5 and 6 to Saint-Vulbas and Dijon. Stage 7 brings the mid-race time trial – a 25km individual test – from Nuits-Saint-Georges to Gevrey-Chambert

Profiles for the 2024 Tour de France

Stage 8 is another day for the sprinters as the race heads to Combey-les-Deux-Eglises, while stage 9 is the big gravel day, featuring 14 sectors of rough roads across the 199km race around Troyes.

The final six gravel sectors are packed into the final 35km, making for a real test for the overall contenders.

Profiles for the 2024 Tour de France

The first rest day of the race comes after the day out on the gravel. The action gets back underway on stage 10 with echelons possibly a factor on the largely flat stage to Saint-Amand-Montrond.

The 211km stage 11 is a mid-mountain day to Le Lioran with four climbs packed into the final 50km and a total of 4,350 metres of climbing. Stage 12, meanwhile, looks to be another for the sprinters on the road to Villeneuves-sur-Lot.

Profiles for the 2024 Tour de France

Stage 13 is another spring chance in Pau before the race hits the Pyrenees on stage 14.

The riders will head 152km from Pau across the Col du Tourmalet (19km at 7.4%), the Hourquette d'Ancizan (8.2km at 5.1%), and the finish at Saint-Lary Soulan (10.6km at 7.9%).

Profiles for the 2024 Tour de France

Another hard Pyrenean stage comes up the next day. Five classified climbs are on the menu, concluding with the finale to Plateau de Beille (15.8km at 7.9%) at the end of 198km of action. A rest day follows on the Monday after the weekend.

Profiles for the 2024 Tour de France

Stage 16 looks to be one for the breakaway to battle the sprinters on the road to Nîmes.

As the race heads back to the Alps, the riders head into a brutal final week with a finish at Superdévoluy (3.8km at 5.9%) on stage 17. It's not the hardest stage of the Alps but a major challenge and a chance for the GC men to do battle, nonetheless.

Profiles for the 2024 Tour de France

Stage 18 from Gap to Barcelonnette is in the Alps but offers a reprieve from the high mountains, with a continuous series of hills making for a nervous day in the saddle and giving potential for further attacks between the bigger mountain stages.

A mini but mighty mountain stage from Embrun to Isola 2000 comes on stage 19. It may be only 145km but the climbs of the Col de Vars (18.8km at 5.7%), the Cime de la Bonette (22.9km at 6.9%), and the finisher at Isola 2000 (16.1km at 7.1%) should host a major GC battle.

Profiles for the 2024 Tour de France

The penultimate stage of the Tour is even shorter and sharper, even if it doesn't hit the very high peaks of the Alps. The 133km from Nice to the Col de la Couillole will take in the Col de Braus (10km at 6.6%), the Col de Turini (20.7km at 5.7%), the Col de la Colmiane (7.5km at 7.1%), and the Couillole (15.7km at 7.1%).

Profiles for the 2024 Tour de France

If that tough hard final week wasn't enough, then there'll be one last chance for the GC contenders to do their thing on the last day of the race.

Nice hosts the finale with a 34km final stage time trial taking in the climbs of La Turbie (8.1km at 5.6%) and the Col d'Eze (1.6km at 8.1%). Is this where the destination of the 2024 yellow jersey will be decided?
