The Route of the Rio Grande
Rio grande route to taos, the rio grande is one of north america’s longest and most important rivers..
This great, gentle river has nourished the lands and valleys through which it passes since time began. Tracing its route by car is extraordinarily scenic. This is an easy one-day journey.
Begin your day in Santa Fe with a walking tour of the historic district. Be sure to visit the oldest house in America and The Palace of the Governors, then pick up a box lunch for the day ahead. Velarde is an especially scenic and interesting old Hispanic settlement. You may wish to leave the highway and explore the village's many unpaved roads. Your reward will be many fine examples of distinctive tin-roofed Northern New Mexico architecture. Just north of Velarde, you'll encounter the Rio Grande on your left. Several miles into the gorge, you may wish to stop at Embudo Station, a historic site from the Denver & Santa Fe Railroad's "Chile Line" days along the banks of the river. In warm weather, Embudo is an excellent picnic site. At the northern boundary of the Rio Grande gorge you will pass through the town of Pilar and the Orilla Verde Recreation Area. If you're the adventurous sort, you might wish to take a rafting trip down the Rio Grande. The gorge offers world-class whitewater rafting.
Travel north from Santa Fe on St. Francis Drive, Highway 285, to Española.
Continue north on NM 68 through the old settlements of Alcalde and Velarde. This is apple orchard country. A side trip to Dixon during fall harvest time is very rewarding. Stop at the Oñate Monument Visitor Center which chronicles Spanish colonization of North Central New Mexico. Continue north on NM 68 through mountain country. On your last descent to the Taos plain, there is a breathtaking panorama of the mesa and tableland north of Taos. The trace of the Rio Grande is clearly visible to the north as it cuts through this vast, arid territory.
Arrive in Taos at the terminus of your trip.

Discover the Agricultural Side of the Rio Grande Valley on a Farm Tour
It surprised me a little bit to learn that the Rio Grande Valley is one of the richest farming areas of Texas. I guess it shouldn’t have because I am literally surrounded by farms. The field next door, during the growing season, has either corn or cabbage planted. Sugar cane is grown down the road and cotton around the corner. The cotton gin is across the street and the sugar cane factory is only about 10 miles away. Although I moved to California from Missouri as a young child, I was born on a farm and I think it is just in my blood. I wanted to know more but I didn’t know where to start. Then I discovered that a couple of local tour companies offer a Rio Grande Valley farm tour. I booked with Viva Tours because their schedule fit best for me.
Family owned Viva Tours has been in business for more than 30 years and Tomas and Aida Gonzalez provide top-notch service. Tomas picked me up right on time in a spotless van. He’s an awesome tour guide with so much knowledge about the area. He was more than happy to be sure everyone had all the time they needed at a location for photos or any other personal need. They offer a week-long Copper Canyon tour and I would so love to do that! Me and trains, you know.
The Rio Grande Valley Farm Tour
Tropical star.
We started our farm tour at Tropical Star in Alamo. What an impressive place! Owner Bob Huck produces seedlings for farms all over the Rio Grande Valley. Currently, most of the seedlings are watermelon. He told us that they might have up to 14,000,000 seedlings at one time. That number can double when he does tomatoes. I don’t know about you but that is pretty mind-boggling to me.
Apparently, farmers, just like pretty much everyone, are very competitive. Seeds are color coded and markers have no discernible details about who any particular seedlings belong to for confidentiality.

View this post on Instagram Imagine walking into a greenhouse with rosemary as far as the eye can see. Then imagine the aroma from that rosemary heavy in the air because they are “mowing” it to keep it healthy and from getting leggy. It was divine! Some of it was destined for your dinner table and some for your essential oil diffuser. #rosemary #greenhouse #herb #essentialoil #farming #agriculture #farmtour #agribusiness #seasoning #riograndevalley #rgv #foodblogger #travelblogger #lifeofablogger #GoldCountryCowgirl A post shared by Gold Country Cowgirl ??✈️ (@gccowgirl) on Feb 6, 2020 at 10:11am PST

Tommy Hanka Farm
From Tropical Star, we went to a field where workers were cutting and packing napa cabbage and bok choy. We heard first-hand what it’s like to work in the field. Each person has a specific job for the day. They only work if the farm has an order and they work until the order is complete, no matter how many hours that is or what the weather is like. Some days, they may only work a few hours but they are still grateful for any work.
Lunch and Other Stops
We had all been up for hours by now and were getting hungry. Next stop was a feast of a lunch (included in the tour) in Escobares near Roma. They were ready for us and started serving us as soon as we were seated. Out came soup, huge plates of meat and fixings for tacos, house-made corn and flour tortillas, quesadillas, and baked potato.
Other stops on the Rio Grande Valley farm tour included:
Roma Chamber of Commerce and the Roma Bluffs Observation Deck From the observation deck we could see the International Bridge and across the Rio Grande to Ciudad Miguel Aleman. Tomas assured us that the city is safe for US tourists so I have a new town in Mexico to explore.
Fort Ringgold Historic Site Built just after the end of the war with Mexico. We didn’t get out of the van here – just drove through.
Falcon Lake Sadly, a couple of women behind me were talking and I couldn’t hear much of what Tomas said about the lake – one of the drawbacks of a tour. Again, we did not get out here. Note to campers and RVers: Falcon State Park is here with full hook-up campsites. Tomas pointed out a primitive area where overnight parking is allowed and is free.
A Bakery in Rio Grande City Did I mention that the weather had turned bitterly cold? I always check the weather before I leave home and temperatures in the 60s was the prediction for the high. When I left home, the sky was cloudy and black and that never improved. The high predicted for the day changed to the mid 50s with a 15 mph wind! Needless to say, we all appreciated the stop for coffee and dessert.
Our Final Farm Tour Related Stop
All water in the Rio Grande Valley comes from the Rio Grande. We stopped to see a pumping station where up to 3,000 gallons per minute are pumped to irrigate the fields.
My Final Thoughts
I really enjoyed this Rio Grande Valley farm tour, in spite of the weather. I learned so much and got to see some behind-the-scenes things I had been curious about. Some of the other participants were farmers, or retired farmers, so it was especially interesting listening to their questions and stories.

At some 82 miles total distance, this trip is not suited for everyone, and 7-10 days is the time frame needed to accomplish this run.
Difficult and strenuous portages are neccesary for 2-3 rapids, each requiring several hours to complete.
Paddling skills are also essential, the technical nature of this trip plus the number of days required must be considered before committing to the Lower Canyons, since once you start you must finish, quitting is not an option.
If, however, you want to challenge yourself and hone your paddling skills into the next level, all the while traversing thru one steep-walled canyon after another, then here is the once-in-a-lifetime, bucket-list river trip.
We’ll provide you with the boat, gear, and guides to help you navigate the most remote stretch of river in Texas.
Call or email for more info and pricing, and please watch our videos posted to get the feel of what you may encounter on this trip.
If you’re not sure, try a shorter trip with us for starters and we can help get you acquainted with what to expect for a Lower Canyons float.

Rio’s Olympic Golf Course is the main attraction this week
Change Text Size
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Known as Brazil’s wonderful city – ‘ Cidade Maravilhosa’ – Rio de Janeiro provides a one-of-a-kind setting for the 69 th playing of the ECP Brazil Open, the first PGA TOUR Americas event in South America. Starting this afternoon, the tournament is being hosted by the Gil Hanse-designed Olympic Golf Course, the venue where Justin Rose became golf’s first gold medal winner in 112 years during the 2016 Rio Games.
With the Brazilian Golf Confederation and the Rio Olympic Course partnering with PGA TOUR Americas, the ECP Brazil Open is coming here for the third time. The tournament was played at this venue in back-to-back PGA TOUR Latinoamérica seasons in 2016 and 2017.
“I have great memories from this place, and I was very pumped to get back here this week and play it,” said Joseph Winslow, who tied for ninth the one time he played here in 2017.
“When you get to play a place that was designed specifically for the Olympics, you know it's always going to be a pretty special course to go out there and play. I’m very excited to be a part of PGA TOUR Americas’ playing at this place this week”, added the 31-year-old from Overland Park, Kansas.
At 7,163 yards long and playing at a par 71, the Olympic Golf Course was created to challenge the world’s best golfers at the Rio Games, but it was also meant to serve the development of golf in the region. The course has welcomed the Brazilian Amateur Championships for the past few years, and it remains in championship shape.
“It’s my first time here and the course surprised me for the better. Some holes play pretty tough, but others provide scoring opportunities depending on the way the wind is blowing. It’s a course that demands some good strategic plan,” said Jesús Montenegro of Argentina, who holds the third spot in the Fortinet Cup standings after back-to-back top-10 finishes to start the season.
Built on a former sand quarry along saltwater marshes and lagoons near the Atlantic Ocean, this golf course is pretty unique within the region. Although it resembles the typical links courses, Hanse’s inspiration was drawn from the classic Sandbelt courses outside Melbourne, Australia. Greens are slanted, with several hole locations demanding precise tee shots to set up an unobstructed approach. There is no rough, but there are several other challenges as the wind.
Born and raised in Te Puke, New Zealand, Harry Hillier feels right at home playing down here. “I played a lot of junior golf in Melbourne and a lot of the shots, you kind of nailed on the head with it, it's very familiar for me. It's the lies, the way the ball is bouncing, the way the ball reacts, it's very familiar to me. I am looking forward to competing out here. It's one of the better golf courses we get to play and exciting to see how the game will hold up throughout the week,” said the 24-year-old.
With his older brother moving up to the Korn Ferry Tour after winning this event last year at Fazenda Boa Vista, outside the city of Sao Paulo, Harry is a sort of designated defending champion. “We were sitting in our apartment last week and he said, ‘You better bring home the silverware.’ So, there's no pressure on his part, he's just putting it all on me. So, I'm looking forward to seeing if the Hillier name can hold up two years in a row,” added the University of Kansas alum.
In all, 22 players in this week’s field have made at least one ECP Brazil Open start at the Rio Olympic Course. Mexico’s José de Jesús Rodríguez, who is coming off a win at the Totalplay Championship at Atlas Country Club and holds the Fortinet Cup standings lead, has the best record among them. He tied for eighth in 2016 and then shared runner-up honors in 2017.
“We played here a few years ago and although I kind of forgot some holes, it brings back great memories,” said the 43-year-old veteran. “It is a tough course, one that will require a lot of patience because the wind plays a fundamental factor.”
The 69th ECP Brazil Open is the third event of the PGA TOUR Americas inaugural season. Originally scheduled to begin at 6:40 a.m. Thursday, its opening round start was pushed to 1 p.m. due to inclement weather early in the day.
