Best Things to do in Port Alfred
Situated on the scenic Sunshine Coast of South Africa’s Eastern Cape province, Port Alfred has rightfully earned its reputation as a beloved holiday destination. It’s also conveniently located equidistant from the cities of Port Elizabeth and East London , making it easy to reach. With its extensive stretch of sandy beaches and idyllic location along the Kowie River , Port Alfred is a beautiful destination that offers plenty of recreational fun for visitors.
Take a short road trip to Bathurst
A brief history of port alfred.
Port Alfred traces its roots to the early 19th century when British settlers established it as a military and naval base. Originally named Port Frances, it gained strategic importance due to its harbor on the Kowie River. In 1860, the town was officially renamed Port Alfred in honor of Prince Alfred, the second son of Queen Victoria. Thriving in the late 19th and early 20th centuries through trade, agriculture, and timber, Port Alfred evolved into a cultural and recreational hub, drawing tourists and retirees with its historical architecture and the scenic Kowie River. The establishment of the Royal Alfred Marina in 1989 brought upscale residential development, revitalizing the town and solidifying its status as a sought-after destination. Today, Port Alfred continues to be a popular destination for tourists and retirees seeking a tranquil coastal lifestyle.
Best Things to See and Do in Port Alfred
Whether you love nature, enjoy history, or just want to relax by the sea, Port Alfred has activities for everyone. Keep reading to discover the best things to do in this beautiful place.
Enjoy beach days in Port Alfred
Port Alfred’s beaches stand out with their beautiful scenery, gentle waves, and soft sands. Because of this, the beaches here are great for both swimming and water sports. Some of the beaches are also surrounded by dunes, giving you a chance to try your hand at sand boarding.
East Beach is a favorite among families and dog lovers . With its long stretch of sun-kissed, golden sands, it is a wonderful beach for swimming , walking and soaking in the sunshine. It’s also a renowned surfing spot, with excellent waves! Ever wanted to try sand boarding ? The dunes surrounding East Beach provide the perfect opportunity for that, too!

While strong rip tides at West Beach make it less suitable for swimming, it remains an excellent family-friendly destination, featuring a scenic, extensive stretch of sand that’s perfect for leisurely strolls, sunbathing, and fun beach activities.

Kelly’s Beach
Kellie’s Beach proudly holds the prestigious Blue Flag status. This means safety, cleanliness, facilities, and lifeguard services are top-notch. The 400-meter-long beach provides lots of space for activities and sunbathing. Kids can enjoy playing in the rock pools on the west side of Kellys. Surfing is a hit here too, with beach breaks that offer both right and left-hand waves.
Walk along the pier at West Beach
The West Pier provides great views across both the ocean and West Beach. I found it fascinating how forcefully the waves crashed against the pier – it certainly made for an impressive sight. For the history buffs, it also has quite an interesting story. The pier was originally constructed in an effort to create a harbour, thereby encouraging trade. However, its original purpose was short-lived. The Harbor, operational for just two decades, fell into disuse during the 1800s. The advent of the railway line connecting Port Alfred and Grahamstown made the harbor obsolete, leading to its abandonment.

Enjoy a meal at one of Port Alfred’s restaurants
Port Alfred has lots of seafood spots thanks to its coastal setting, with fresh catches served daily. There are also cafes, bistros, and relaxed pubs and grills around town. But, my two best picks in Port Alfred are Tash’s Restaurant & Craft Bar at the Royal Alfred Marina and Guido’s at West Beach.
Tash’s Restaurant & Craft Bar
I really enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of Tash’s Restaurant & Craft Bar , as well as its prime location at the Marina . The outdoor seating area provides lovely river views in a comfortable and casual setting. The menu has a variety of choices, including steaks, hamburgers and seafood dishes. Tash’s also serves an impressive range of craft beers, wines, and cocktails.
Where to find Tash’s: Click here for precise Google Map Directions.
Guido’s
Right by the West Beach parking lot, there’s a popular restaurant known as ‘ Guidos ‘ where you can enjoy great food in a casual, family-friendly atmosphere. Guidos is famous for its delicious wood-fired pizzas, so it’s the perfect place to enjoy some food after a day at the beach.

After your meal, you can head to the beach bar next door for some enjoyable downtime, where you can have a cold beer and a game of pool.
Admire the boats and houses at the Royal Alfred Marina
The Royal Alfred Marina in Port Alfred is a high-end residential project that radiates luxury and exclusivity. Lying in a network along the river, the marina features five artificial islands linked by bridges. Residents of the Royal Alfred Marina enjoy a waterside life style, with private waterways for peace and privacy. Strolling around and looking at the houses and boats in the small harbor is a nice way to spend time in Port Alfred.

Soak in some history along Wharf Street
Wharf Street, Port Alfred’s first street, was once the heart of commerce when the river was a bustling port for ships in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, it’s a popular spot for both tourists and locals to visit. There are a few shops and well-preserved old buildings to explore along this street, including an art gallery, fish market and a brewery.
Where to find Wharf Street: Click here for precise Google Map Directions.
Warf Street Brew Pub
The Wharf Street Brew Pub is situated in a building dating back to 1853, which originally served as the customs hut for the harbor master. It is, in fact, regarded as the oldest continuously used building in Port Alfred. The staff at the Wharf Street Brew Pub are welcoming, the food is delicious, and their craft beers are fantastic. What’s not to love?
The Little Brewery
Right next door to the Wharf Street Brew Pub, you’ll find the charming Little Brewery , complete with its own dedicated brewing and fermentation rooms, as well as a bottling corner. The brewery invites visitors to come in and take a look around if they wish.
Cruise the Kowie River
Exploring the picturesque Kowie River, which offers a 22km navigable route winding from the river mouth to Waters Meeting, is a great way to see the natural surroundings of Port Alfred. One of the popular activities is to take a guided barge river cruise , with several tour operators offering choices that vary from one-hour trips to personalized cruises of different lengths.
Get your Adrenaline pumping with Watersports on the Kowie River
If you’re a watersports enthusiast, the Kowie River is the place to be. Try your hand at kayaking, paddleboarding, or even hire a boat for a day of fishing. The river provides a dynamic setting for various water-based activities.
Be mesmerized by spectacular sunsets
The sunsets in Port Alfred are out of this world. When the sun sets, the sky lights up with a beautiful blend of oranges, reds, and pinks, casting a golden glow on everything. No matter where you choose to watch the sunset – be it from the beach, your lodging, or along the river – the experience is truly magical.
Get your coffee fix at the trendy Kong Coffee
With its distinct style and ambiance, Kong Coffee brings a fresh and innovative approach to the local coffee scene. It’s more than just a coffee shop, though. There’s also an attached Vintage Jewellery shop, a plant nursery, and a gift shop. It’s cool, it’s trendy and if you love coffee, then this is the place to be.

Only 15 kilometers from Port Alfred, you’ll find the charming village of Bathurst. Established in 1820, it is one of the oldest settler villages in the region. Bathurst is known for its historic charm, with well-preserved buildings dating back to the 19th century. It is also home to South Africa’s oldest continuously licensed pubs, the iconic Pig & Whistle Inn . You can explore the village’s unique attractions, such as the enormous Big Pineapple , which houses an informative exhibit about the local pineapple industry. Every Sunday, there is also a farmers’ market, selling local produce and crafts.

7 Unforgettable Things You Can Do Only in Port Alfred
Until now Port Alfred’s byline has been ‘retirement village’. But this is changing fast as a younger set and their children move into the portside village seeking an alternative and slower lifestyle.
As a result, it’s inspiring to discover that the town has its own micro-brewery alongside the river, a trendy courtyard lifestyle centre, a marina with blue flag status, a handful of really good restaurants, and a series of activities to keep you busy for a week.
Port Alfred lies bang smack in the middle of the Sunshine Coast with typically mild weather that translates into beach days, even in winter. Named after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s second son, Prince Alfred, it’s been here almost 200 years…
Once it gave up on the idea of functioning as a major seaport, thanks to the sandbank at the mouth of the Kowie River, its navigable river and great beaches began to function as a mini Riviera on the Sunshine Coast.
Here’s our list of 7 things you can do only in Port Alfred
Wharf street.
Wharf Street is a little collection of 19 th -century buildings, some of them restored others in need of a bit of attention. It’s a busy little slip road that functions as a pedestrian thoroughfare on the river wharf, upstream from the river mouth. The Wharf Street Brew Pub is here, its dining room a vast space of exposed stone and brick, wooden floors, huge photos and craft brew on tap.
Next door is the Little Brewery with its own brewing and fermentation rooms and a bottling corner. Pop in for tasters of their pilsner and ale. The two lie in the only stone building in town and an historical landmark that functioned as a harbour master’s, a city hall, a goods store and a cinema. This was the original commercial street of Port Alfred back in the 1820s.
The Courtyard
Across the river, in Van De Riet Street, is another row of characterful, historical buildings. A few of them now function collectively as The Courtyard – a delicious blend of antique store, restaurant, bakery, home décor shop, florist, and tiny streetside Greek delicatessen – around a central courtyard with flagstone floors, fuchsia bougainvillea, and tables and chairs in nooks and crannies plump with cushions and zany lightfittings (at least indoors).
Zest’s food line-up is an easy companion to the distinctly Mediterranean vibe with imaginative salads, homemade pizzas, cakes, great coffee, Wi-Fi and a wooden canteen that once belonged on Grahamstown’s railway station. The Courtyard is a local favourite with accessible owners who are happy to chat.
The restaurant (and the lack of swimming) at West Beach
I can’t vouch for the food, but Guido’s setting right at the Kowie River mouth at West Beach is unbeatable, and on sunny days a drink on the decks upstairs is mandatory. Sundowners is best with views out over the Kowie River and East Beach beyond. Food includes wood-fired pizzas and curries.
The interesting thing about the beaches on either side of the Kowie River (aptly named East and West beach) is that rip tides make swimming here almost impossible – for that you need to head a little further west to Kelly’s beach, where it’s more protected (a mere 1 km further west). But surfers enjoy East beach, particularly in summer.
Cruising the Kowie River
Port Alfred’s marina holds blue flag status, the heart of the river its 250-berth small boat harbour alongside the Royal Alfred Marina. It’s home to private boats of every shape and size, from private ski boats to yachts and canoes. The Kowie has 22 km of navigable river making a boat trip from here as easy as pie, particularly as there are daily cruises from the Halyards.
Make enquiries. Either you can hire your own boat and set sail yourself, or you can join a scheduled cruise. The Kowie River isn’t only navigable upstream, cruises also head downstream to the sea, particularly at sunrise and sunset. There’s no waterskiing on the river and jet skis can launch, but they’re only allowed downriver and out to sea.
Postmaster’s Village
On the opposite side of town from The Courtyard is something vaguely similar, although it’s got a quality of its own. Just a couple of blocks in from West Beach the Postmaster’s Village is termed a ’boutique shopping centre’ with a little coffee shop, talk radio station, a wine shop, art gallery, hair dresser’s and tiny little zen fountain in a postage stamp garden, tucked away just beyond the coffee shop’s courtyard.
As its name suggests, the little village is on the premises of the original Settler’s post office.
Only 15 km inland, and slightly uphill, of Port Alfred is the village of Bathurst . It’s an absolute must-visit in terms of historical buildings and quaintness; you’ll feel as though you’ve stepped into a little English village set on a hillside (CNN labelled it South Africa’s most eccentric town in 2014).
The people who live here tend to congregate around the Pig & Whistle (the country’s oldest pub) , whether it’s meeting up for a beer at lunch time, or bumping into one another outside the general dealer, the town has the sense of being well lived in.
On the way in you pass the giant pineapple , which is fun to do, particularly if you have children along, and then there are a handful of old buildings to visit, quirky shops to visit, or a meal at which to while away the time on one of the restaurant’s stoeps.
Make sure to make the weekly Sunday farmers’ market.
Waters Meeting Nature Reserve
Whilst you’re out at Bathurst, you may as well include Waters Meeting Nature Reserve in your rambles because the aerial view of the Kowie River loop (one of very few river loops in the country) has become quite a showstopper – it’s something of a mini Blyde River Canyon – known as Horseshoe Bend.
The loop almost closes at the neck of the bend, forming a U-shape where fresh water meets sea water, which is how it got its name.
If you’re doing a cruise of the Kowie River you can get here by boat, but you’ll have to climb to see the aerial view. It’s probably just easier to follow the R67 through Bathurst and on for about 4 km to the reserve.

Port Alfred, Sunshine Coast
Port Alfred, with its stretches of sandy beach that extend for miles, lies on the banks of the Kowie River. Port Alfred was established by a group of English settlers in the early 1800s and, although now an active commercial and residential town, it has retained most of its English fishing village feel. Port Alfreds former thwarted attempts at becoming a major seaport, impossible due mainly to the sandbank at the mouth of the Kowie, have given rise to a huge yacht harbour and residential marina.
Port Alfred is known fondly as the heart of the sunshine coast and lies on Route 72 equidistant from Port Elizabeth and East London . Port Alfred boasts a wonderfully temperate climate - never too hot or cold - with rainfall in the spring and autumn months. This makes it an ideal water sports destination enhanced by the fact that the Kowie is navigable for about 28 kilometers upstream. The Kowie River, which flows into the Indian Ocean, divides the town in two and the banks are linked by a couple of bridges. Boat cruises and various hiking trails navigate this river region, rich in indigenous vegetation, fauna and bird life.
It is also the venue for the Kowie River Canoe Trail - a 40km-long return paddle and a 12km hike. Participants navigate the river to Waters Meeting Nature Reserve near Bathurst and then hike through forests famous for sheltering endangered barred owls.
The town of Port Alfred is now much sought after and it attracts holiday makers to its shores, not least because of its wonderful swimming beaches. Much like Jeffreys Bay , you can collect shells on the beaches and over 1800 different types of seashells have been spotted, including perlemoen. Water sport abounds here and you can swim, surf, boat, water-ski and scuba dive when youre not fishing.
For those seeking dry land, there is always the Gary Player golf course at the Fish River Sun hotel, just 20 minutes drive from the town and neighbouring game reserves such as Shamwari. There are a few shopping centres, although not very large, cinema, restaurants and a marketplace in Port Alfred.

"It's pure luck": Inside the life of world's oldest man as he takes title aged 111
111-year-old John Alfred Tinniswood from England is now the world’s oldest living man , following the death of 114-year-old Juan Vicente Pérez (Venezuela) .
112-year-old Gisaburo Sonobe from Japan was initially expected to be the new record holder, but he was recently confirmed to have passed away on 31 March.
Born in Liverpool on 26 August 1912 – the same year the Titanic sank – John’s exact age is 111 years 223 days as of 5 April 2024.
John is a great-grandfather and currently resides at a care home in Southport, where staff describe him as “a big chatterbox”.
After confirming him to be the oldest man alive, Guinness World Records Official Adjudicator Megan Bruce travelled to Southport to present John with his certificate and learn more about his long life.
Despite his advanced age, John can still perform most daily tasks independently: he gets out of bed unassisted, listens to the radio to keep up with the news, and still manages his own finances.
According to John, the secret to his longevity is “pure luck”.
He said: “You either live long or you live short, and you can’t do much about it.”
Beyond eating a portion of battered fish and chips every Friday, John says he doesn’t follow any particular diet: “I eat what they give me and so does everybody else. I don’t have a special diet.”
John doesn’t smoke and rarely drinks alcohol. His main advice for staying healthy is to practice moderation: “If you drink too much or you eat too much or you walk too much; if you do too much of anything, you’re going to suffer eventually,” he said.
A lifelong Liverpool FC fan, John was born just 20 years after the club was founded in 1892. He has lived through all eight of his club’s FA Cup wins and 17 of their 19 league title wins.
John has also lived through both World Wars; he was 27 when the second one broke out, and despite having eyesight issues, he found purpose by working in an administrative role for the Army Pay Corps. In addition to accounts and auditing, his work involved logistical tasks such as locating stranded soldiers and organizing food supplies. As such, John is the world's oldest surviving male World War II veteran.
After the war, John worked in accounts for Shell and BP up until his retirement in 1972.
When asked how the world around him has changed throughout his life, John replied: “The world, in its way, is always changing. It’s a sort of ongoing experience. […] It’s getting a little better but not all that much yet. It’s going the right way.”
John met his wife, Blodwen, at a dance in Liverpool. One of his fondest memories is of their wedding in 1942, a year before having their daughter, Susan. The couple enjoyed 44 years together before Blodwen passed away in 1986.
John now has four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Since turning 100 in 2012, John received a birthday card each year from the late Queen Elizabeth , who was John’s junior by almost 14 years.
Having become the UK’s oldest man in 2020, John is unfazed by his new-found status as the oldest in the entire world. “Doesn’t make any difference to me,” he said. “Not at all. I accept it for what it is.”
His advice for younger generations is: “Always do the best you can, whether you’re learning something or whether you’re teaching someone.
“Give it all you’ve got. Otherwise it’s not worth bothering with.”
The oldest man ever was Jiroemon Kimura (1897–2013) from Japan, who lived to the age of 116 years 54 days.
The world’s oldest living woman and oldest living person overall is Spain’s Maria Branyas Morera , who recently celebrated her 117th birthday .

Bathurst. Only 15 km inland, and slightly uphill, of Port Alfred is the village of Bathurst. It's an absolute must-visit in terms of historical buildings and quaintness; you'll feel as though you've stepped into a little English village set on a hillside (CNN labelled it South Africa's most eccentric town in 2014).
