Die restaurierte Altstadt von Freinsheim, die eine imposante Stadtmauer mit Türmen und Toren umgibt, lockt das ganze Jahr über viele Besucher an. Wein- und Obstanbau prägen das Umland der 5.000 Einwohner zählenden Kleinstadt. Gemeinsam mit sieben weiteren, zur Verbandsgemeinde Freinsheim zählenden Gemeinden reicht die Urlaubsregion vom Pfälzerwald über das Rebland an der Weinstraße bis zu dem Obst- und Spargelanbaugebiet. Etwa zwei Dutzend thematische Wanderwege erschließen die Region. Auf die Gäste warten zudem zahlreiche Weinfeste und weinkulinarische Angebote.

Freinsheim — Characteristic Old World Charm

With a Collective Municipality of the same name, it might be kind of confusing when talking (or, in this case, writing) about the town of Freinsheim — located right on the edge of the Palatinate Forest , in the Upper Rhine Valley .

As much as I’d love to delve deeper into the natural beauty of the place, it seems as if there’s too much historical stuff to distract me. Freinsheim is a characteristic Old World town, with remnants of its medieval days — but also has things to see from later periods.

Being a lover of the Middle Ages, I was excited to see pieces of its Old Town Wall. The Eisentor , one of the town’s gates, was built somewhere in the 14th or 15th century. The Herzogturm , or Duke’s Tower, was constructed during the same time — and is believed to have been a dungeon at one time.

Freinsheim — Top Areas Of Interest

Old defense walls aren’t the only thing typical to the medieval period. Because what are the Middle Ages without a castle, I ask you? As the medieval period was drawing to an end, Freinsheim’s castle (with a moat no less) was built, way back in 1471.

And I ask you, what would the Middle Ages be without a church? There is one here, by the way, the Evangelical Church, whose Romanesque tower is all that’s left from its medieval beginnings — but I’m still technically counting it as a medieval building.

We can debate it later, ’cause right now I’m thinking about all the fun festivals and cultural events taking place throughout the year. Like clockwork, you can count on the Altstadtfest (Old Town Festival) taking place on the first weekend of June, the Rotweinwanderweg on the 4th weekend of June, and the Stadtmauerfest on the third weekend of July. That’s in addition to the Christmas Market taking place over the four weekends of Advent.

And to go back to the pretty natural beauty of Freinsheim, you’ll find little fruit farms and a Baroque garden to wander around. Sounds idyllic, doesn’t it?

Famous Lorelei Rock

 The most famous of all Rhine legends has its origin at the only 130-metre wide narrow part of the Rhine near St. Goarshausen. Steep cliffs leave no room for the current here and many ship accidents nourished the fairy tale of the fair blonde who, high up on the rock, confused the boatmen's senses. Many myths entwine themselves around this place. In the 19th century Clemens Brentano transferred the name of the rock, which pushes far into the river bed, to the enchanting blonde woman. Pure Rhine romanticism.

A very special highlight along the Romantic Rhine from May to September is the annual, Rhine in Flames‘ fireworks spectacle held in five different locations with aerial fireworks, riverside promenades illuminated with flares and festively illuminated ship fleets.

Wine hike: Freinsheim - Erpolzheim - Bad Dürkheim - Kallstadt

Short description: An eventful round tour through the vineyards. From Freinsheim you walk to Erpolzheim and via St. Michael's Chapel to Bad Dürkheim's sausage market square with its giant barrel and saltworks. You walk back via the Roman excavation site "Villa am Weilberg" and Kallstadt.

Freinsheim railway station, regular connections from the Rhine-Neckar triangle, from the direction of Neustadt/Weinstraße and Bad Dürkheim as well as from Grünstadt. Timetable information: www.vrn.de

From the north: A6 motorway (Mannheim/Kaiserslautern, Grünstadt exit) towards Bad Dürkheim, on B271 (German Wine Route) via Herxheim am Berg to Freinsheim.

From the south: Motorway A61 at the Ludwigshafen junction onto the A650 towards Bad Dürkheim. At the end of the extension, go straight on in the direction of Gewerbegebiet Trift/Grünstadt. At the 2nd traffic light, turn right towards Ungstein. At the roundabout, take the 1st exit towards Freinsheim.
