Plan an incredible itinerary with our favourite things to do in Napier.

We absolutely love Napier . Located in the stunning Hawke’s Bay (Te Matau-a-Māui as it’s known in te reo Māori ), and right beside Hastings and Havelock North, this region offers so much to visitors.

Whether you’re in town to sample wine from world-class vineyards or to experience the unique Art Deco architecture, this small town packs a surprising punch.

We suggest you soak up our suggestions before creating your own Hawke’s Bay travel wishlist.

Happy planning!

Some businesses are experiencing staffing challenges post-COVID. If you want to guarantee a space at a restaurant or attraction, we suggest pre-booking.

The Best Things to Do in Napier

Activities and attractions in napier, 1. wander along marine parade.

Located along the coast of the South Pacific Ocean you’ll find Marine Parade.

Stretching approximately 3km, no visit to Napier is complete until you’ve walked along this famous seaside path.

There, you’ll find a number of the attractions that we mention below, alongside a few others.

Whether you relax at the sunken gardens, snap a photo of Napier’s most famous statue (Pania of the Reef), grab an ice cream or challenge your travel companion to a round of mini-golf, be sure to check out Marine Parade whilst you’re in town.

2. Enjoy a Wine Tasting

The Hawke’s Bay is home to more than 200 vineyards, 70 wineries and 30 cellar doors, making this the perfect place to sample fine wine – right from the people that make it!

Best known for Chardonnay, Merlot Cabernet blends and Syrah, these vineyards are spread across Napier, Hastings and Havelock North.

Though it’s possible to drive yourself directly to a vineyard, we recommend hopping on a guided tour (by car or bike) so you can relax without worrying about having a sober driver.

Some of our favourite vineyards include:

  • Brookfields Vineyards : 378 Brookfields Road, Meeanee, Napier 4183
  • Mission Estate Winery : 198 Church Road, Poraiti, Napier 4112
  • Church Road Winery : 150 Church Road, Taradale, Napier 4112

3. Enjoy a Bike Ride Around Napier

The Hawke’s Bay Trails boast 200km of flat, easy-riding trails throughout the region, connecting award-winning wineries, unique cafés, quaint country pubs and artisan outlets.

For the more adventurous, our mountain bike parks are very highly-regarded and take in some spectacular scenery. Little legs are also catered for, with a selection of cycle skills tracks to impress even the most discerning mini-riders.

Here are their cycling guides and a copy of your own Hawke’s Bay trail map for more great outdoor experience.

  • Water Ride : Between 15 and 35km return depending on your route [Napier].
  • Wineries Ride : Between 30 and 60km return [Hastings].
  • Landscapes Ride : Between 15 and 42km return [Hastings].

4. Visit the Region’s Incredible Art Deco Buildings

Sadly, Napier was devastated by an earthquake in 1931 .

Not long after, the city was rebuilt in the architectural style of the time — Art Deco.

In town, there are three buildings that demonstrate Art Deco particularly well. They are the:

  • Art Deco Masonic Hotel : 2 Tennyson Street, Napier South, Napier 4110
  • Daily Telegraph Building : 49 Tennyson Street, Napier South, Napier 4110
  • National Tobacco Company Building : 1 Ossian Street, Ahuriri, Napier 4110.

Keep your eyes peeled though as these stunning buildings are all around the town.

In fact, it is said that Napier is the best example of Art Deco architecture anywhere in the world — only ours has a unique twist with the inclusion of some Māori designs.

This makes Napier all the more special.

5. Take a Step Back in Time at the Napier Prison

If you’re looking for a unique experience in Napier, head along to the old prison.

The Napier Prison was the oldest penal complex in Aotearoa, having opened in 1862. It was eventually shut in 1993, but affordable self-guided tours (using a map and audio device) are now available through the facility.

Throughout the experience, you’ll learn unforgettable stories and be transported back in time. Walk through undulating corridors (which managed to survive the massive earthquake of 1931), get dressed up in prison gear, have a mugshot snapped, take your fingerprints and much more.

This informative tour is fun for everyone and totally unique to the area.

55 Coote Road, Bluff Hill, Napier 4110

Did you know? The prison also offers a self-guided tour aimed at younger members of the family.

6. Learn From the Past at MTG Hawke’s Bay

The MTG (which stands for Museum, Theatre, Gallery) is the home of art, culture and history in Napier.

Telling the story of the 1931 earthquake, whilst showcasing a range of interesting exhibitions (including a range of Māori artefacts and local collections), the MTG is open to all visitors and is free to visit.

If you’re travelling in Napier with kids , be sure to pay a visit to the MTG. They host a family-friendly drop-in zone each weekend, along with fun and interactive activities and workshops aimed at kids.

There really is something for everyone at this unique museum.

7. Warm-Up at the Ocean Spa

The Ocean Spa is Napier’s premier hot pool complex.

It has a range of pools, allowing visitors to unwind with incredible views of the ocean right in front.

The pools are part of an open-air complex and feature heated, chlorinated water, allowing visitors to enjoy facilities year-round.

For peace of mind too, you’ll feel confident knowing they have qualified lifeguards on patrol at all times. This is a real bonus if you’re travelling with children.

8. Enjoy the Botanical Gardens

The Botanical Gardens in Napier are the perfect place to relax whilst visiting town.

Covering an impressive 18 acres, this floral oasis is home to an aviary, duck pond and two historic wells.

Visitors can enjoy walking a number of tracks, each of them weaving their way through beautiful plantings.

We were surprised by the size of this colourful garden. We also enjoyed walking in the old cemetery where most tombstones have been there since the 1800’s. Easy parking, families bring their picnic and eat on their gorgeous lawn surrounded by majestic old trees. Daniele

19 Spencer Road, Hospital Hill, Napier 4110

Pro Tip: The Botanical Gardens are built into a hill so be prepared with a water bottle and comfortable walking shoes — and expect plenty of steps. Don’t let that put you off though as the gardens are beautiful.

9. Check Out the National Aquarium of New Zealand

Located on Marine Parade, the National Aquarium hosts a range of native and exotic sea life.

Visit Penguin Cove and watch the famous little penguins (from the Good and Naughty Penguin of the Month social media fame) feed and play. Each of these little guys was rescued and given a safe new home in the aquarium. They’re a real highlight of any visit!

You’ll also see sharks, stingrays and fish swimming over you in the 1.5 million litre oceanarium tunnel and have the chance to spot New Zealand’s native wildlife — including tuatara, kiwi and eels.

Discover an exciting world both above and below the water at the National Aquarium of New Zealand.

546 Marine Parade, Napier South, Napier 4110

Pro Tip:  Try to time your visit to coincide with daily feeding times. 10.00 am for the reef fish, 2 pm for the sharks and the little penguins at 9.30 am, 1.30 pm and 3.30 pm.

10. Take a Step Back in Time at the Faraday Centre

Centrally located in Napier, the Faraday Centre is Hawke’s Bay’s Museum of Technology.

It’s a place of discovery where history comes alive through hands-on experience. Rather than reading and looking at pieces of history, they encourage visitors to touch and hold items, pull levers and truly discover how things would’ve been in days gone by.

The Faraday Centre is an amazing place to experience the evolution of technology in a hands-on, meaningful way.

With interactive displays and surprising exhibits, this is one museum that’s sure to hook in both children (wanting a glimpse into the past) and people who’ve lived through these incredible times.

11. Climb Bluff Hill

Bluff Hill is undoubtedly home to the best views in all of Napier.

This hill sits just beyond the main town, overlooking the bustling Port of Napier.

You can choose to drive up the Bluff Hill Domain Lookout to enjoy views out over the water, or walk to the top.

If you choose to drive, be sure to take your time — though the drive is short, the roads up are steep and have tight corners.

If you’d rather walk, allow approximately 30 minutes from town and be prepared for lots of steps on the way to the lookout. We recommend you find the path up through Sturm’s Gully via the Lighthouse Road entrance, though there are a number of ways to access the lookout.

On a clear day, it’s possible to see the Mahia Peninsula, Wairoa, Ruahine Range and Cape Kidnappers (which is home to the gannets which we’ll soon discuss).

Relax at the top of Bluff Hill where you’ll be treated to the sound of native birdlife (including tūī , pīwakawaka and bellbirds ).

Did you know? The lookout was built on the concrete remains of two 6-inch gun emplacements that were built on Bluff Hill in preparation for World War II.

12. Take a Guided Tour of Napier

Though it’s possible to plan your own self-guided tour of Napier with the ideas on this list, sometimes it’s nice to sit back and relax whilst someone else shows you the sights.

Thanks to the incredibly unique history in this area, Napier is a great place to join a guided tour.

Whilst on board, you’ll learn about the 1931 earthquake that shaped the city (and its rebuild) whilst also visiting a number of the stops on this list.

You will also benefit from commentary, as shared by a local.

13. Visit a Local Art Gallery

Napier is home to more than its fair share of art galleries and exhibition spaces.

Whether you’re keen to peruse local art whilst visiting or want to purchase a piece to take home as a reminder of your visit, the following galleries are worth checking out.

  • Boyd-Dunlop Gallery and Ahuriri Contemporary : 4 Hastings Street, Napier South, Napier 4110
  • SPA_CE Napier : 3 Market Street, Napier South, Napier 4110
  • Creative Arts Napier : 16 Byron Street, Napier South, Napier 4110
  • Tennyson Gallery : 63 Hastings Street, Napier South, Napier 4110
  • The Art Shed : 511 Main North Road, Bay View, Napier 4104.

We took a piece home on our last visit to Napier — you might like to do the same.

Pro Tip: Whilst in town, be sure to check out the community outdoor art installations too.

Visitors enjoy looking at the art displays.

14. Hit Napier’s Op Shops & Antique Stores

As a town, Napier looks very much like the past. It’s unsurprising then, to learn that this unique town is also home to a thriving retro scene that includes quality op shops and antique stores.

If you’d like to take a piece of the past home with you, be sure to pay a visit to one of the following stores.

  • Napier Antique & Jewellery Centre : 65 Tennyson St, Napier 4110
  • Whales Tale Antiques : Cnr Bridge Street Cnr Bridge & Waghorne Street, Ahuriri, Napier 4110
  • Decorum of Art Deco Napier : 4 Herschell Street, Napier South, Napier 4110.

15. Marvel at New Zealand’s Largest Collection of Irons

Whilst you’re in the Art Deco capital, of both New Zealand and the world, and surrounded by retro items, you may as well go all-in.

Esk-Ironz is the largest collection of laundry irons (and related memorabilia) in the country and what a collection it is! Privately owned, this extensive exhibit shows the evolution of domestic laundry chores, with examples from around the world.

They are open by appointment and your entry includes a personalised, guided tour by the owners. Suitable for all ages (and wheelchair-friendly). this is a great opportunity to learn about this quirky collection.

16. Treat Yourself to a Locally Made Ice Cream

Lick this! have been serving delicious fresh ice cream, gelato, sorbet and ice blocks for almost 20 years. It’s one of those New Zealand foods that you really have to try!

Made mostly on-site using local ingredients, they serve up more than 40 different flavours — many of which have a distinctly kiwi twist.

If you ask us, a frosty treat from Lick this! is the perfect afternoon tea treat.

This place is always on our “must visit” list when we are in Napier. It is usually quite busy but the friendly and efficient staff seem to keep everything moving. There are so many flavour choices and while we tend to stick to old favourites, it pays to try something new as sometimes there’s a flavour you just never knew you’d love! I love how unique it is in that most is made on-site, can’t be bought anywhere else in NZ, and is clearly made with a lot of love and passion for quality ice cream. Amy

17. Shop at a Local Farmers’ Market

The Napier Urban Farmers’ Market is smaller than the more established Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Markets (which feature next on our list) but they’re a convenient option for those wanting to stay within Napier.

There you’ll find a collection of fresh pastries, coffee and produce to help stock your fridge and pantry from the source.

Located in central Napier, not your usual Farmers Market but a small version with an emphasis on local produce. Amazing selection of fruit, veg and plants. Cupcakes were a highlight with the kids and the best bacon sandwiches we have ever had. Victoria

Worthwhile Things to Do Near Napier

18. visit one of the oldest and best farmers’ markets in new zealand – hastings.

The Hawke’s Bay Farmers Market is world-famous in New Zealand, and an absolute must-see if you’re in the region on a Sunday.

Just a 12-minute drive from Napier, these are widely regarded as being the best farmers’ markets in the country.

As the original market in the area, they have operated for 20 years. Since then, they’ve consistently served a wide range of the freshest produce and a selection of delicious treats.

Meet the growers and producers as you wander the market, enjoying live music in the sunshine.

19. Cool Off at Splash Planet – Hastings

Splash Planet is only a 15-minute drive from Napier, located in neighbouring Hastings.

This is now New Zealand’s only water theme park and it’s a heck of a lot of fun!

Originally opened in 1968 (as Fantasyland), it has been a family favourite in Napier especially with kids for generations.

Now, it is home to a wide range of awesome attractions, including water slides and swimming pools, making it perfect for a warm summer’s day.

Splash Planet is only open only in the summer season (and on either side of it) so be sure to visit their website to check their operating hours.

20. Visit the Gannets – Cape Kidnappers

Only 25 minutes from central Napier, you’ll find the largest mainland gannet colony in the world.

These quirky birds are entertaining to watch and the scenery on the way out to the colony is every bit as worthwhile.

To visit the colony you have two options – both of which require joining a guided tour.

  • Option 1:  Hop on the back of a tractor-trailer and ride along the shoreline to the gannet colony. Upon arriving at the end, you’ll climb up the side of the cliff to the gannet colony. This is a great option for those looking for an adventure, but is tide-dependent and requires a reasonable level of fitness.
  • Option 2:  Join a guided tour and travel over two local stations to access the gannet colony by land. This tour runs regardless of the tides and gives much better protection to guests in poor weather. They get you nice and close to the gannets so next-to-no walking is required.  This is the tour we joined when visiting and we can’t recommend it enough – book your spot below.

The gannets themselves are graceful in the air but incredibly clumsy on land – keep your eyes peeled for their crash landings!

21. Check Out the Views from Te Mata Peak – Havelock North

Less than 30 minutes from Napier you’ll find the towering Mata Peak.

Offering 360° views of Hawke’s Bay, this 399m high landform draws visitors in from all around. In fact, it’s even possible to see Mount Ruapehu in National Park on a clear day.

Accessing Te Mata Peak is easy. It’s possible to drive right to the top, though if you’re in a campervan we suggest you stop before the top car park (where the road really does narrow).

The park is made up of almost 100 hectares of parkland that includes walking/running trails, mountain biking tracks and a large redwood grove.

At the top, you’ll even find a paragliding/hang gliding platform where you can watch brave locals take to the sky.

Whether Te Mata Peak is bathed in sun or peaking out through the fog, it’s well worth paying this lookout a visit.

The Māori creation myth of Te Mata Peak. “It is said that Maori chief Te Mata fell in love with the daughter of his rival, the Heretaunga chief. To prove his worthiness and win the beautiful Māori maiden’s love, Te Mata accepted a series of near-impossible challenges. The handsome chief choked and died attempting his final task, which was to eat his way through this rocky range. Te Mata Peak depicts the outline of his prostrate body and is called the Sleeping Giant by locals.” Hawke’s Bay New Zealand

Did you know? Two million years ago the seafloor tilted. This created the landform that we now know as Te Mata Peak.

Napier (and the Hawke’s Bay in general) is such a diverse and beautiful part of New Zealand.

Be sure to include it on your next North Island adventure.

Napier in New Zealand is the most consistently Art Deco city in the world, due to being largely rebuilt in the 1930s following a devastating earthquake in 1931. It is in Hawke's Bay , on the sunny east coast of the North Island .

Understand [ edit ]

travel centre napier

At 10:47 AM on 3 February 1931, Napier and the wider Hawke's Bay was struck by a magnitude 7.8 earthquake. The quake and subsequent fire killed 256 people and destroyed much of the central business district. The demolition rubble was dumped along the eastern foreshore and turned into gardens and a recreational reserve.

After the earthquake, the CBD and other areas were rebuilt in the Art Deco styles prevailing at the time. Today, Napier is billed as "the Art Deco capital of the world", with over 100 Art Deco buildings in the CBD alone, most of which have been restored and heritage-listed.

The earthquake raised the land by several metres, draining the Ahuriri Lagoon. The airport, the surrounding farmland, and the modern-day suburbs of Onekawa, Pandora, Pirimai and Tamatea all sit on the reclaimed land. Some streets still have the names they had when they were on the coastline – streets called a "quay" or a "bay" may be inland now.

The suburb of Taradale , a separate town until 1968, has the region's oldest and most famous wineries, which host concerts during summer.

The Hawke's Bay Regional Council runs a public bus service between Hastings and Napier via Taradale every 20 to 30 minutes on weekdays, hourly on Saturday and two-hourly on Sunday. Catch the number 12 bus from outside the public library in each city; adult single fares cost $5.40.

Air Napier flies from Gisborne . Sunair flies from Wairoa , Gisborne and Tauranga . There are two cafes in the terminal – they close at 6PM, so don't cater to evening flyers.

Art Deco Capital of the World

Napier (and Hawke's Bay's) iconic Art Deco architecture owes its existence to a 7.8 magnitude earthquake and the resulting fires which leveled the city in 1931.

Tasked with the reconstruction of their city, Napier citizens adopted the Art Deco style which was at the height of its popularity for buildings at that time. Its clean simple lines and base relief decoration suited the needs of the new city. It was also very fashionable. With its past destroyed, Napier looked ahead and chose a style associated with Manhattan, the movies and modernism.

TE MATAU A MAUI

In Maori mythology, the formation of Hawke's Bay's geography is found in the story of Maui, the most of the Maori gods, who hauled up the North Island while out fishing one day with his brothers.

Annoyed by the favouritism shown to Maui by the other gods, the brothers tried to sabotage his fishing efforts by refusing him a fishhook or some bait. But the resourceful Maui produced his own hook, made from the jawbone of his grandmother. He punched himself in the nose, coated his hook with the blood...

Napier's, art deco story.

Napier’s world-renowned collection of Art Deco buildings owes its existence to the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that devastated the Hawke’s Bay region in February 1931, killing 256 and injuring thousands more. "Art Deco Capital of New Zealand"

Napier tourism.

Burrowed into Hawke’s Bay on New Zealand’s North Island, Napier is the country’s 6th largest urban area. A romantically evocative city replete with buildings that ooze old-world charm and aesthetic, this port-city hugging the North Island’s east coast, lies 300 km away from the capital Wellington.

Heritage buildings rebuilt in the Art Deco styles of the 1930s, after the devastating Hawke’s Bay earthquake that crushed most of the surrounding area, point to the resilience of Napier and the collective Kiwi spirit.

Napier also has the distinction of being one of New Zealand’s most gastronomically diverse and celebrated regions and is home to some of the finest wineries in the country. Napier becomes abuzz with tourist flurry during February as it hosts the Napier Art Deco festival which draws large numbers of tourists from outside Napier and is indicative of Napier’s place as a hub of culture and art.

One of the first points of contact between the native Maori tribes of New Zealand and Captain James Cook and European settlers, Napier has always occupied a place of significance in New Zealand’s history. One of the most photographed and picturesque regions in all of New Zealand, Napier is also one of the most well-preserved cities, with many of its buildings recognized as heritage sites, making it a photographer’s paradise. It is also the centre for export for New Zealand’s world-renowned Merino wool.

More on Napier Travel

History of napier, culture of napier.

Napier’s biggest tourist attraction is the incredibly distinctive Art Deco style of architecture emblazoned across most of the city’s low-rise buildings. The seaport underwent most of its development during the 1920s, during which time the retro, Gatsby-esque style of architecture was in vogue and influenced much of the buildings’ design.

The Hawke’s Bay earthquake of 1931 laid waste to much of Napier and the nearby town of Hastings and killed more than 200 people. Most of the buildings were restored afterwards, keeping the Art Deco style they were built in firmly in mind, reviving the city and breathing new life into it.

Napier is also famed for its wineries and produces some of the best wine in New Zealand. A thriving wine culture is also paired with a vibrant culinary scene that makes Napier synonymous with good food and drink.

Nightlife in Napier

Festivals in napier.

Napier Art Deco Festival-  The month of February marks the busiest period in Napier’s tourist season as the city plays host to the Napier Art Deco Festival. Throngs of tourists flock to Napier during the second week of February to revel in the splendour of the Napier Art Deco Festival. The city transforms into a snapshot of the roaring 20s in America with vintage cars line the streets and people decked out in the garb of the times, looking like a scene out of the Great Gatsby. Pencilled in to be held on the 19th - 23rd of February, Napier becomes flooded with tourists to see the world’s biggest and best-preserved Art Deco city.

FAWC! - Food and Wine Classic- The bi-annual Food and Wine Classic festival is held once each during the New Zealand winter and summer, usually during the month of June and November. The festival celebrates Napier’s reputation for being one of New Zealand’s finest wine-producing regions. Pairing the complex notes of the wines with gastronomic delights that consists of classic and contemporary New Zealand fare, the Food and Wine Classic promises to be a culinary extravaganza not to be missed.

Best experiences at Napier

MTG Hawke’s Bay-  The sleek, resplendently white MTG building, which stands for ‘Museum Theatre Gallery’, is one of Napier’s enduring symbols. Consisting of three separate buildings, the MTG was first erected in 1865 and was renovated in 1936 after it was reduced to rubble after the 1931 earthquake. Open every day of the week from 9:30 AM - 5:00 PM, the MTG provides a platform for different media of art to be showcased and expressed and is a landmark building of Napier. Free entrey ensures that this is an experience that is open for anybody to go and enjoy.

National Tobacco Building Company-  The bright blue steps that lead up to the rose-pink arches of the National Tobacco Building, along with its cubist-inspired architecture and retro lettering scream Art Deco. The National Tobacco Building Company is one of the finest examples of the architectural style in Napier. Once the headquarters where Rothman’s cigarettes were manufactured, the building has now been turned into one of Napier’s most significant tourist attractions.

Napier Urban Farmer’s Market- Buy local and enrich the local economy by going on Sundays to the Napier Urban Farmer’s Market for some fresh produce and a great morning. Perk your senses up with some of the best dark or light roast coffee found in the country, and complement it with some boulangerie classics. Located on Emerson Street on Saturdays, get a true taste for the Napier flavour by taking home some of the freshest and organically sourced vegetables and meats here.

Napier Prison-  New Zealand’s first prison, Napier Prison has now been converted into a historical facility that offers both guided and unguided tours of the site. Established in 1862 on Napier Hill, the prison had a reputation for containing some of New Zealand’s most notorious criminals at the time and is even known for paranormal activity that occurs around its premises.

Pania of the Reef- One of the most iconic sights in Napier is of the bronze Pania of the Reef statue that adorns the Marine Parade. The story behind the statue is one of lovelorn and love lost. The legend goes that a beautiful maiden, Pania that used to swim in the waters during the day and went to meet her lover during the night. She had to go back to where she was from as dawn broke each day otherwise she would not survive. Frustrated by this, her lover fed her some cooked food while she was asleep, which would not allow her to go back to the sea. Heartbroken by this act of betrayal that endangered her life, Pania went back to the sea, never to be seen again. The bronze statue is a manifestation of the many sightings of Pania out at sea, arms outstretched, imploring her lover for an explanation on his betrayal.

Tom Parker Fountain- An evening walk down Marine Parade road in Napier would not be complete unless visitors walk past the vibrantly lit Tom Parker fountain. The kaleidoscopically vibrant fountain, named after a gentleman’s tailor of the time that donated significantly to the city of Napier, is a sight to behold after the sun sets. What better way to cap off a long day of walking through the city, marvelling at Art Deco buildings, than by taking in the colourful sights of the Tom Parker fountain.

Food and Drink in Napier

Emporium Eatery and Bar-  Napier is also known for its thriving culinary culture with the Art Deco movement and its proclivity for wine-making and tasting spilling over into its food. The Emporium Eatery and Bar is one of Napier’s landmark locations and has been a mainstay of the Napier food scene for some time now. It’s lovely retro setting within the Masonic Hotel, paired with its eclectic menu that features gourmet options and fine wines and coffees, ensures that it is the place to go, no matter what time of day it is.

MINT Restaurant-  One of the few establishments in Napier that isn’t housed inside an Art Deco building, the MINT Restaurant serves up some classic Kiwi fare featuring menu items like slow-braised lamb, and mussels from a Victorian-era building.

Mission Estate Winery Restaurant-  The Mission Estate Winery Restaurant is one of the longest-standing establishments in Napier and is one of its most highly-reputed wineries. The restaurant's mains of pan-fried fish is a local favourite and is sure to pair well with the fantastic options of their in-house wines.

FAQs on Napier

What is the best time to visit napier.

Since Napier is a coastal city, it is largely characterized by temperate weather. The best time to visit Napier would be during the summer season from December to February. This period allows for great weather and the major art deco festivals of Napier are held during this season. Be aware that this is also the peak tourist time for Napiers and flight tickets and accommodation options will be more expensive unless booked well in advance.

The months of September to November is the low-season and tickets and lodging options would be more affordable during this season. The weather is still very nice during this time and visitors can enjoy the cool springtime weather.

Napier Travel Guide: Top Things to do in New Zealand’s Art Deco City

To be completely honest, Napier was actually nothing more than a little detour on our New Zealand trip. It was thanks to the high rain forecast that we quickly chose a random place in the North Island that had the most hours of sunshine predicted. So this was all very spontaneous and we had no plans and zero expectations in Napier.

After a difficult and rainy start came the turnaround: Napier really surprised us – in a good way. We have not come across any other city quite like Napier. The city centre is like reminiscent of a movie set from the 1930s with its Art Deco elements. In this travel guide we share with you the top things to do we discovered in and around Napier.

1. Napier: New Zealand’s Art Deco City

2. napier travel guide: top things to do & see, 3. excursions around napier: our travel tips, 4. food & drinks in napier: culinary tips, 5. our hotel tip for napier new zealand, 6. more new zealand travel guides.

A devastating earthquake is responsible for making the walk through Napier feel like you’ve travelled back in time. In the 1930s, the city was destroyed and left in rubbles, but slowly built itself back up in the Art Deco style of the time.

Downtown Napier resembles a movie set from the 1930s. We did not expect the buildings to be so well preserved. From the street lamps to the lettering on the buildings: Art Deco is omnipresent in Napier.

Around Napier is also one of New Zealand’s most important wine regions: Hawke’s Bay. Since we were here, we didn’t want to miss this opportunity so we paid a visit to one of the famous wineries. This is not one of the cheapest activities, as alcohol is very expensive in New Zealand, but for us it was an experience we were happy to have had.

In terms of landscape scenery around Napier, Te Mata Peak was the most impressive by far. Watching sunset from the summit is without a doubt one of the most beautiful moments for us in New Zealand.

Art Deco in Napier: The Highlights

The great thing is, you don’t actually have to actively look for Art Deco buildings because you’ll come across these historic buildings as you walk around the town centre anyway! Especially if you explore the area around Emerson Street, you will notice that the 30’s flair is particularly predominant in that area of the city centre.

Napier’s most famous Art Deco building is just outside the centre: The National Tobacco Company Building is probably the most photographed house in the city. Also worth seeing is the “ Daily Telegraph Building “, which is located on Tennyson Street.

If you want to drink coffee in a historic atmosphere, then you are in good hands at the Emporium . If you are looking for souvenirs, “ The Art Deco Shop ” is a good place to go. Here you will find Art Deco souvenirs and a lot of memorabilia from the old days.

Napier Art deco

Marine Parade

You should definitely plan a walk along the Marine Parade. Although there are admittedly more impressive beach promenades , the Marine Parade with the sometimes very bizarre structures (including “The Colonnade”) is very worth seeing.

Unfortunately, you can’t go swimming here because the currents are a bit too strong. However, you can watch the breaking waves from the dock.

Tips Napier

Bluff Hill Lookout

Bluff Hill Lookout overlooks Napier Harbour and has sweeping views of the beach and surrounding areas. We personally found it rather interesting to watch the movements of the port harbour containers below, but there are certainly more spectacular viewpoints in New Zealand.

You can reach the Bluff Hill Lookout quite comfortably by car, it takes less than 10 minutes by car from the centre. Alternatively, you can get up the hill by foot. It will take you about 30 minutes to trudge up this short but relatively steep hike.

Bluff Hill Lookout

Te Mata Peak

Our personal highlight in Napier was experiencing a magical sunset from Te Mata Peak. If you’re lucky with the weather, the low setting sun will cast a fiery glow across the hilly landscapes. We would never have imagined that such a breathtaking backdrop existed in what is otherwise a very flat Napier.

We can highly recommend a trip to Te Mata Peak . If you are a bit tired from a day of exploring (like we were), then you can easily drive to the summit. Alternatively, you can climb the Te Mata Peak by foot.

Our tip: Take a blanket and your favourite drink with you so that when you get to the summit, you can snuggle up and enjoy your beverage while watching the sun go down. For us, this was one of the most magical and beautiful moments on the North Island.

Te Mata Napier

Wineries in Hawke’s Bay

Napier is located in the middle of Hawke’s Bay, one of New Zealand’s most important wine regions. So needless to say, most the travellers passing by will usually stop in one of the many wineries located here and sample a glass of white wine or two.

We certainly weren’t about to let this experience slip us by, so we decided to visit the Black Barn Vineyard , a well-known and beautifully located winery just south of Napier. Alcohol is relatively expensive in New Zealand, so expect to pay about 12 NZD for a glass of wine.

Our tip: We combined our visit to Black Barn Vineyard with the trip to Te Mata Peak. It was perfect that the Black Barn Vineyard happens to be located at the foot of Te Mata Peak.

Black Barn Vineyard

Lake Waikaremoana

A somewhat unusual tip, but if you know us – then you know we love going off the beaten track and Lake Waikaremoana is one of those places. To get there from Napier requires a 2.5 hour drive and it certainly does not count as one of our typical destinations.

On the west coast of Lake Waikaremoana runs one of the more unknown “ Great Walks ” (there are nine of these famous Great Walks in total). You need several days to complete the entire route, however you can decide to just do a small stretch and get a feel for the landscape. Fortunately, in this case, the most spectacular section of the track is actually right at the beginning.

Only one hour of strenuous uphill hike and you will be rewarded with stunning views over Lake Waikaremoana. We didn’t have the best weather for the occasion, but even that could not take away the mystical beauty   of this place. More information about this hike can be found in this travel guide: The most beautiful day hikes in New Zealand .

Lake Waikaremoana

Cape Kidnappers

Unfortunately, we did not manage to walk to Cape Kidnappers due to tidal constraints. The route there is only accessible at low tide, which did not coincide very well with the time we visited. Low Tide happened to be either very very early in the morning or again after nightfall.

Cape Kidnappers is home to the world’s largest gannet colony , a very special species of bird. It is only possibly to visit Cape Kidnappers by foot or as part of a guided tour. If you are going on a jeep tour with Gannet Beach Adventure, you are also dependent on the tides, as you drive along the beach. However, overland tours with Gannet Safaris start every day at the same time.

Cape Kidnappers

Like Napier, the small town of Hastings is often referred to as Art Deco City. To be honest, if you’ve seen Napier, visiting Hastings is pretty unnecessary. Napier is much nicer and just has more to offer.

If you’re rushing to Hastings, you can visit the region’s most famous ice cream parlour just outside the city centre: ice cream has been produced at Rush Monro’s Icecream Gardens for generations. We tested it: It was very good, but not as good as our Stammeissalon (Ice Cream) in Vienna!

Organic Shop at Chantal Organics

This rather peculiar place comes highly recommended from us. Located in the same health food store is the Chantal Cafe. You choose your food directly from the cabinet and they offer a great selection of healthy dishes including salads, quiches and even a soup of the day. Then you simply take a seat at one of the large tables.

Apart from us, the majority of the guests were mainly pensioners and local families. We possibly ordered more than we could handle but everything just looked so tempting! In the end we settle on three dishes (shared between the two of us) and cleaned everything except the last bit of crumb. The food was fantastic and easily a clear recommendation!

Address: 45 Hastings Street, Napier

Hapī Clean Kai Co-op

In search of a snack, we landed at Café Hapī. The tiny little hipster cafe is mostly visited by young people and families. They serve mainly vegan food, healthy dishes and drinks.

You can choose from sandwiches, salads and cakes. There are also plenty of smoothies, freshly squeezed juices and different drinks made from alternative milk (such as almond). We went there for lunch, but it’s also well suited for a healthy breakfast. Oh yes, a big plus: the coffee is excellent.

Note: Like many cafés in New Zealand, Café Hapī closes very early. Every day at 4 pm!

Address: 89 Hastings Street, Napier

Are still looking for the perfect hotel for your time in Napier? Then we can warmly recommend the 415 Marine Parade . A historic villa has been restored and now houses a gorgeous boutique hotel.

The rooms are very tastefully furnished and luxuriously equipped. There is really nothing missing here. The hosts are incredibly welcoming and have great tips.

Our conclusion: A feel-good place to stay! Great location, great breakfast, wonderful hospitality. It doesn’t get any better than that.

You can book the hotel here: 415 Marine Parade

I’m disappointed they didnt see the 50 Pangeaseed Seawalls murals around Napier city and the harbour… quite stunning and accessible!

Oh no, we missed it :(

Yes, maybe they’re next visit

25 Best Things to Do in Napier 💠 [2024]

Nz pocket guide is 10 years old. thank you for trusting us with your trip for over a decade, the top activities and attractions in napier.

Some amazing experiences await in Napier ! The North Island city is not only the largest city in the sunny Hawke’s Bay region, but it’s also the quirkiest with its fascination with all things “Art Deco”. Art Deco is a style taken from the 1920s with geometric patterns and symbols of freedom that was chosen to decorate the city after a devastating earthquake destroyed the city. Needless to say, exploring Napier city is a must but also the wider region with famous wineries to visit, Maori cultural experiences, breathtaking landscapes and wildlife, and so much more. We’ll go through all the highlights in this list of super fun things to do in Napier!

1. Do a Self-Guided City Tour…

Let’s kick off our list of the best things to do in Napier with a classic. Napier is one good-looking city thanks to its Art Deco-style architecture. After an earthquake that devastated the city in 1931, the city was rebuilt in this quirky and vibrant style. Learn about the history and stories behind Napier’s architecture on a self-guided tour of the city. Interpretation panels can be found all around the city giving context to key sights. Either go for a walk and see what you discover (it’s a small city and you’ll get around easily) or pick up a self-guided walk brochure from the Art Deco Trust Centre or Napier i-SITE .

Location: All over Napier city centre. Art Deco Trust Centre – 7 Tennyson Street. Napier i-SITE – 100 Marine Parade.

2. … Or a Guided Art Deco Tour

Experiencing the “Art Deco” town is one of the most popular Napier activities. Several tour operators offer guided tours of the city centre focusing on its history and local stories through Art Deco architecture. It’s a great way to discover the city if you have just arrived with an easy-to-digest way to learn about the city. Book your walking tour with the Art Deco Trust or a vintage car tour with Avantogo Tours or Deco City Discoverer .

Location: Art Deco Trust – 7 Tennyson Street. Other tours – accommodation/cruise ship pick-ups available.

3. Check Out the Views from Bluff Hill

The most prominent Napier attraction is Bluff Hill . Get your bearings and a few awesome photo opportunities from the top! The steep climb (don’t worry, you can drive it) takes you to the site of a World War II battery. A plaque commemorates the presence of the soldiers at the site, while there are plenty of seating areas and garden displays to enjoy while taking in the views of Napier city and the Port of Napier. The lookout is about 7 minutes’ drive/35 minutes’ walk from the city centre.

Location: End of Lighthouse Road, Bluff Hill, approximately 2 km (1.2 mi) from Napier city centre.

4. Tour the Hawke’s Bay Wineries

Napier is the hub of the Hawke’s Bay region, one of the most popular winemaking regions in New Zealand! It would almost be a sin to not get out there and taste the local wines in the heart of where it is all made. Plenty of tour operators, such as Vines and Views  or Hawkes Bay Scenic Tours , can take you on a winery crawl from Napier. Alternatively, do a self-guided tour by bike or car (just don’t drink and drive) to cellar doors offering tastings and tours, such as Church Road , Mission Estate and Brookfields Vineyards , as listed in the 10 Best Wineries in Hawke’s Bay . After a few glasses, this will be your favourite thing to do out of all the Napier activities! See more experiences ideal for couples in the 10 Romantic Things to Do in Napier .

Location: All over the Hawke’s Bay region. See the link above for specific winery locations. Wine tours usually offer pick-up.

5. Get Spooked at the Napier Prison

The scariest, spookiest and funniest Napier attraction is the Napier Prison . That’s right, Napier is home to one of the creepiest places in New Zealand ! Napier Prison offers self-guided tours with audio handsets to make your way through New Zealand’s oldest prison, established in 1862. Learn stories of famous New Zealand prison inmates and visit their old cells. There are costumes to get dressed up for some hilarious photos!

The coastal forest, a typical landscape of the east coast of New Zealand, leads to those views that you “only see on postcards”. While you’re in the area, there’s the 45-minute drive to the Waipapa Falls Track featuring a 5 m (16 ft) high waterfall. It is worth the 2-hour loop walk found around 13km (8 miles) down Aropaoanui Road. Find out more about the walks in the 10 Best Walks in Hawke’s Bay .

Location: Waipatiki Road, approximately 65 km (40 mi) north of Napier. The walk starts just before the beach.

Beautifully preserved 1930s architecture is Napier's special point of difference.

View from Te Mata Peak

View from Te Mata Peak, Hawke's Bay

By Tour Napier

Street after street of stunning and beautifully-restored Art Deco buildings have made Napier famous as one of the most complete collections of Art Deco buildings in the world. In 1931 a massive earthquake rocked Hawke's Bay for more than three minutes, killing nearly 260 and destroying the commercial centre of Napier.

Rebuilding began almost immediately, and new buildings reflected the architectural styles of the times - Stripped Classical, Spanish Mission and Art Deco. Napier is often referred to as a 1930s film set, and one of the best ways to enjoy the streetscape is on a self-guided walk - ask for a map at the information centre or at the Art Deco Trust. Guided walks (opens in new window) around the city are also available every day rain or shine (except Christmas Day!). Every February, Napier celebrates its heritage with the Art Deco Festival - a stylish celebration of all things 1930s, including vintage cars, fashion and music.

Napier is home to many fine wineries, fabulous restaurants, bars and cafes. The boutique shops are a must-visit, as is the Sea Walls collection of magnificent murals painted on more than 50 walls around the city. Grab a map and walk or ride around the city to see them up close.

The beautifully restored Marine Parade serves as a scenic and popular bridge between the city and the Pacific Ocean, with a wealth of family-friendly activities sure to keep the kids entertained for hours. Napier’s iconic Norfolk Pines, Deco Soundshell, Tom Parker Fountain and ‘Pania of the Reef’ statue are a visual reminder of the city’s past. Drive just outside the city centre to the historic fishing village of Ahuriri to check out the growing list of cafes, bars, restaurants, galleries and boutique stores.

For the perfect photo opportunity, visit the Viewing Platform located on the Marine Parade foreshore, just down from the Pania statue. Napier is also the perfect base from which to explore the wider Hawke’s Bay region.

Frequently asked questions

Your appetite and your stretchiest pants, after all, Napier’s visitor slogan is Food & Wine Country. The rest will depend on the time of year you plan to travel as well as the activities you hope to do while you’re in town.

This North Island gem is full of amazing sights and experiences. One of the most popular things to do is to stroll along Marine Parade and gaze at the incredible Art Deco buildings, as Napier is home to some of the best-preserved architecture of this style in the world. Other must-do activities include taking a dip in the Ocean Spa, wandering around the MTG Hawke’s Bay museum, and checking out Ahuriri – a historic fishing village, which is home to some of Napier’s best cafes and restaurants. Just a short drive away, you’ll find Hawke’s Bay’s world-renowned wineries where you can take a guided tour, sample some of the local vino or just enjoy beautiful views of the countryside.

Life happens - we get it! Read more here .

This charming coastal town has plenty to offer year-round, so it all depends on personal preference. Summer (December to February) is undoubtedly the most popular time to visit and is the perfect opportunity to hit the beach and enjoy some of the town’s outdoor events and festivals. As the weather begins to cool and roll into autumn (March to May), the vineyards come to life with the harvest season. During this time visitors can enjoy tastings, tours and plenty of delicious wine-centric events. Winter (June to August) is a great time to throw on a coat and scarf and explore the town’s galleries, shops and cafes, while spring (September to November) is a great time for taking a walking tour of the Art Deco architecture or enjoying a scenic drive.

Take a guided tour of Art Deco architecture, roll out a towel on the beach, visit the National Aquarium of New Zealand, sip your way around the nearby wineries, wander along Marine Parade, check out MTG Hawke’s Bay museum or just eat (and drink) your way around. One thing is for certain, you won’t be bored in Napier.
