Where are the Best Aussie Giveaways and Competitions?

How and Where to Win Competitions in Australia

We see cars, appliances, cash and other giveaways everywhere but who is winning them?

Some of my wins last year include a $1,000 Into The Wild travel voucher (March 2023), a $500 Endota Spa Voucher (May 2023), a $400 Adore Beauty voucher (November 2023), 6 month magazine subscription, a $100 fuel voucher, $50 food voucher, $1,500 photography package and another $800 one, a beauty pack and a few other things.

In other years I have won things including a Phillips Air Fryer, a set of Stanley Rogers knives in a gorgeous wooden block, numerous food prizes etc.

Entering competitions can be so quick and it is amazing what you can win. With Maccas Monopoly, my friends Josh and Naomi won a car !

So how can you win and which ones are the best to enter? Here are my tips and some places to find them.

How I Win Competitions

Currently, we are entering every competition we come across and are paying closer attention to how we spend our money.

For example, Justin wanted a 6 pack and liked a specific one.

Last year, we bought one and I noticed the competition so I sent him back into the store to get a receipt so we could enter.

I popped in my purse and forgot about it.

A few weeks later, I remembered but I had thrown out the box with the details so had to Google it, then entered. March 2023, I woke up and surprise, we won!

There were 30 x $1,000 vouchers to be won and we did a glamping holiday we’ve always wanted to do.

In May, I won a $500 Endota Day Spa voucher then in July a photography session with a photo, as well as smaller prizes throughout the year.

Being aware, and entering everything relevant to brands we buy or our regular shopping has helped us secure a few great prizes recently.

5 Tips For ‘Comping’ aka Entering Competitions

Comping is a term people use for entering giveaways and competitions. For some, it is almost a full-time job and they love it.

Given how many competitions and giveaways there are, statistically, if you enter a lot, you could win something.

Previously, I won thousands of dollars worth of stuff when I was actively entering competitions as you saw above.

This year (2024) there haven’t been many

1. Get a Different Email Address

Have a competition-specific email address or your regular one will get overloaded.

I have an email address I use specifically for competitions and online surveys (find the best Aussie online surveys here ).

You will get inundated with marketing because it is often a condition of entry. A separate email address saves your inbox.

Make sure you check the inbox and confirm subscriptions to email lists if it is a condition of entry for the giveaway. Otherwise, your entry won’t be valid.

2. Be Active on Social Media

Some people set up separate social media accounts purely for entering competitions and giveaways. Facebook is strict about this but Instagram allows multiple accounts.

However, being active and involved with a regular-looking account can increase your chances of winning rather than a comping account.

Some competitions now have it in their terms and conditions comping profiles are excluded from entering.

Also, social media has some incredible giveaways.

3. Don’t Fall for Scams

If something appears too good to be true, it probably is.

Many of the competitions you see on Facebook where you share and could win an iPad, $10,000, tickets from an airline etc are fake.

Thoroughly check the account hosting or promoting the giveaway before you share anything.

Any account with . or _ in the name probably isn’t the official one.

Scammers are extremely good at copying entire accounts to appear as if they are legit. Don’t be fooled. Always research it further.

Never click on links sent to you in email, messenger etc. Check the email address sending you the prize to see if it matches the competition or brand it claims to represent and check online to see the announcements for winners to confirm all is good.

4. You have to be in it to win it!

As basic as it sounds, you don’t win if you don’t enter. It can take time but it is something you can do while watching TV, waiting at school pick up or at similar times.

Put your scrolling to good use and enter comps where possible instead of mindlessly watching reels.

You could end up winning some incredible prizes.

5. 25 Words or Less

The more effort someone has to put into entering the less likely they are to do it.

As a result, competitions or giveaways with numerous steps or requiring an answer always have fewer entries than those which are just like and share or random selection.

Ones with 25 words or less about something as a requirement get the lowest amount of entries.

Also, the more people you have to follow or the more friends you have to tag etc the fewer individual people enter.

Personally, I have found social media competitions and product purchase competitions to be good.

Meaning, blogger/influencer giveaways or brand giveaways where you enter after buying the item.

Be sure to keep receipts and enter correctly, read the terms and conditions and don’t throw anything away until well after the competition has ended.

I have had to provide the receipt again via email when they said I won, even though it had been uploaded as part of the entry.

Where To Enter

Personally, I have won the most through companies I already use e.g. HelloFresh , Endota, drinks etc or blog giveaways. Here is a list of places recommended by myself and my readers.

Brands You Use

We all have certain brands we buy for everything from food to beauty products. How often do you enter the competitions they run?

It wasn’t until my kids got to be around 8 or 9 and started noticing the competitions and asking to enter that I got serious about it.

Then as we travelled and the world shut down, we kind of stopped.

At the end of last year, we decided to get started again and so hard have won a $500 day spa gift card, a $1,000 gift card, another $200 gift card for a store, numerous drinks/food prizes and we are in the running for items all the time now.

Check the social channels, catalogues and promotions for any brands you like and enter.

Be sure to keep receipts when you buy them and follow the steps properly.

Terms and conditions can be tricky at times but this has been the best way for me to win stuff lately.

Many bloggers run giveaways regularly for anything and everything. Companies know bloggers have great audiences and want to get in front of them.

Quite a few bloggers share their giveaways in this Aussie Facebook group .

Generally, if you follow bloggers you like they will share on their social pages when they are running giveaways.

Social Media

Instagram and Facebook have been amazing for giveaways.

Local businesses often run small giveaways which have fewer entries as they are open only to locals or only of interest to locals.

Follow some of your favourite businesses on social media or look up your local area hashtags to see what competitions are around. E.g. if you are in Canberra, look up #Canberra or #CBR or #CanberraGiveaways and tags like that.

As a teen, I had a friend who entered That’s Life and Take 5 every week.

All those puzzles, crosswords and opportunities to pitch stories, send in photos etc. It was popular.

While you can still get magazines at the shops, you can also enter numerous comps on the magazine websites. Mindfood is one I have liked and know a few people who have won things there.

Competition Sites

This is listed last as many of the competitions on comping sites now are spam. They used to be good but most just want your details.

The most popular and genuine competition sites we’ve come across are Mum Central , Mouth Of Mums , girl.com.au and for broader ones, Competitions Guide .

Read the terms and conditions of any competition thoroughly as sometimes you need to keep the receipt, live in a certain location or meet other conditions.

Thanks for this post. I usually find lower value giveaways on Facebook either from their recommendations or sponsored links in my news feed. For higher value prizes I always look to AussieComps.com as they have a good range of competitions available and post new giveaways every day. The "you have to be in it to win it" thing is so true. I enter heaps of comps from Facebook and AussieComps.com and do usually win something each month - no cars, houses or large cash prizes yet but I'm always hopeful :)

The first thing is to FIND a stack of family travel competitions (or competitions where you can win things of value that you can then sell to fund a family vacation!).

This is where many people trip up.

It’s easy to enter holiday competitions that come our way without any effort.

These are the competitions:

• we see pop up in our facebook feed
• or a sponsored giveaway hosted by someone we follow on Instagram.

But the trick to winning competitions is to think like a ‘comper’ and enter the obscure competitions.

Compers, those mystical people whose favorite hobby is to enter competitions, know THIS is the secret to winning good things, often. 

OBSCURE COMPETITIONS on smaller, less public blogs and websites mean less entries, simply because their audience is smaller, or their target market is harder to reach.

You might not win a holiday to Europe straight away, but you do have more of a chance to win:

• a self-drive weekend getaway
• flights to a local city combined with a fun hotel stay, or
• a package of free entry to a bunch of local attractions.

Even better for those who truly want to win, MOST of these competitions have few barriers to entry.

No.1: Win a Trip Competition Websites

The most obvious place to start is at competition directory such as:

• a sweepstakes directory in the USA
• a contest directory in Canada or the UK, or
• the best Australian competitions and giveaways websites

These websites gather a huge list of current competitions in one place.

Bookmark these pages. 

It’s a good place to try and win a trip to Bali, or win a trip to Singapore. 

The problem with giveaway directories is that lazy compers head straight to these big mainstream sites, and enter competition, after competition, after competition. 

That means there’s more challengers in the count, the main reason we don’t just rely upon these sites to find new competitions going live.

But they do find some competition sources (or are alerted by the giveaway host) that you might not find so easily on your own hunts, so they are worth a quick look each week.

These catalog sites also categorise competitions:

• by vacation (eg Win a Trip to the USA, or Win a Trip to Peru)
• by cash prizes
• by tickets or gift vouchers etc

We LOVE winning tickets to events, to the cinema, to sports games, and especially VIP experiences.

These are easy quick wins, especially if you enter local comps on the radio or in your local newspaper.

These small wins keep us in the game, trying for the big ticket wins. 

We also save the money we would have spent if we were going to buy tickets to the event or show in any case.

These savings go straight into our Bucket List travel fund.

Hot sauce, table tennis duels, and the haka: Team traditions that help surfers ward off homesickness

Join Team Peru's card tournament, jump inside Australia's Ring of Fire, go donut shopping with Nicaragua's pastry connoisseurs, and look inside the kitchen cupboards of Team Italy. Olympics.com takes you behind the scenes of different national surfing teams and their squad traditions.

There was an emergency on Team Mexico on the eve of the 2024 ISA World Surfing Games in Puerto Rico.

When the athletes' luggage was opened, a crucial item was discovered missing.

“We forgot to bring the hot sauce!” Shelby Detmers Cesenas recalled of how she and her teammates scrambled to fix the situation. “Some of the boys came later and we're like, ‘Bring the Cholula, bring the Tapatio!’ We need spicy. We need some spice in our life.”

Familiar food is one way to keep homesickness at bay during lengthy surf trips. So are team activities and - given how competitive the athletes who participate in them are - those have plenty of spice as well.

Card games with house chores on the line, carbonara contests, and haka rehearsals - Olympics.com went behind the scenes with surfing teams from five continents to discover how they bond and stay connected to home while on the road.

Home spice: How Team Mexico and Team Jamaica bring flavour oversees

When the hot sauce finally made its way to Arecibo, the Mexican team breathed a sigh of relief.

“We always bring hot sauce because a lot of countries don't have hot sauce, especially here in Puerto Rico. They don't like spicy food and in Mexico, we like spicy food,” Detmers Cesenas told Olympics.com. “Most countries don't do hot sauce. They'll do some type of salsa, but it's not quite the same as in Mexico.”

Jamaica’s Icah Wilmot can relate. His packing list for long surf trips includes pepper sauce , a Caribbean staple that has proven as hard to find abroad as Team Mexico's beloved condiment.

“Most places you go, the flavour of the food is so much different,” Wilmot said. “In Jamaica our famous dish is called jerk - jerk chicken, jerk pork. The sauce that they make for the jerk, to season the chicken, it's so rich in flavour and spice... Normally, if I'm going somewhere for a long time, I bring a bottle of jerk sauce and just take a spoonful and add it to something and mix it up. It makes it so much better, reminds me of home.”

For Team Mexico, a dab of hot sauce is the magical ingredient that can transform a foreign dish into something that tastes like their national cuisine.

The surfers sometimes even bring a bottle with them to restaurants they visit while abroad. However, as Detmers Cesenas admitted, that is not always practical.

A more travel-friendly solution is required, and her team may have discovered just the thing.

“Most of the time we'll be coming from surfing, going to eat, so we don't have it on us. But it would be a good idea to put a little mini bottle in someone's bag to always have it,” Detmers Cesenas said. “It could be a little Tapatio keychain .”

Jerk chicken on the road? Team Jamaica has all the ingredients.

Team Italy’s best chef and Rio Waida’s plate-cleaning duties

If there was a competition for how much local food a team brings with them on the road, the Italian surfers would probably win by a large margin.

“We have a lot of pasta , a lot of Parmigiano cheese ,” Giada Legati told Olympics.com. “We even bring our own coffee (machine) . We call it moka , to make our coffee from Italy. We do everything to make it feel like home here.”

With the right ingredients in place, there is only one dilemma left for the Italian surfers to solve: Who is the team’s best cook?

The rivalry is fierce, but there is a clear frontrunner.

“ Matteo Calatri , for sure. Hands down, he's the best cook,” Legati said. “There's a bit of competition there for who makes the best carbonara , but everyone knows Matteo is the best one.”

It helps, no doubt, that Calatri cooks for the team almost every day while on the road.

Rio Waida , on the other hand, prefers to eat rather than busy himself at the stove of Team Indonesia’s lodgings.

“I don't cook. I don't cook at all. I only eat and clean the plates ,” the Tokyo 2020 Olympian said. “Everyone's good at cooking, just not me.”

Giada Legati said Team Italy travels to surf trips with pasta, cheese and coffee: "It's an important part of our culture".

Rice and donuts

As the sole Indonesian surfer on the WSL Championship Tour, Waida usually travels alone. But, as he quickly discovered at international events and training camps, travelling with the national team has many benefits.

Teammates who pack unlimited quantities of rice in their luggage is one of them.

“Always rice. We love rice,” Waida said. “I feel like we always get homesick. We love being at home, Indonesia, Bali, so we always try to find something that works for us. It can be the spicy sauce or whatever.

“I don't bring anything. I'm kind of easy. I can eat anything. But every time I travel with the Indonesian team, they're always bringing stuff and it feels like home, so I always enjoy when I'm with them.”

For Team Nicaragua, small gestures of care between teammates don't come in the form of rice or spicy sauce, but donuts .

“Something we like to do is we'll buy each other treats sometimes,” Candelaria Resano said. “Last night, I went surfing. The boys sat home and they're tired and I bought them a box of donuts. And then somebody else comes and we'll get more pastries. We do like to buy pastries for everyone. That's a little tradition we have.

“It's not healthy, but definitely good.”

Table tennis champions and air hockey wizards: Teammates who bond through battles

Donuts are good, but don’t be fooled - things are not always so sweet between teammates.

“I actually - not gonna lie - I kicked Alan's butt doing the air hockey ,” Detmers Cesenas said proudly of trumping Paris 2024 -bound* surfer Alan Cleland . “I'm pretty good at air hockey, so I was pretty confident in that and I just kind of destroyed him.”

Cleland may have lost in air hockey, but there is chance for redemption in table tennis – another favourite activity of the Mexican surfers.

The blue table also does not get much rest in Team GB’s quarters where Luke Dillon currently holds champion paddler status, much to the chagrin of his teammate Arran Strong .

“I want to beat him in the water and out of the water,” Strong said. “We're pretty competitive in everything we do.”

Team Peru also has a handful of table tennis aficionados . Card games are even more popular, and here the stakes are especially high.

“Sometimes if you lose, you have to do something,” Tokyo 2020 surfer Lucca Mesinas said. “Washing dishes or cooking or funny stuff like dancing.”

Friendly banter and competition is part of daily life at Team Mexico.

Cheering on teammates with chants and a haka

New Zealand surfers have a bit less time to play cards or table tennis than other teams.

When it comes to big international competitions, the Kiwis are busy rehearsing the haka, which they traditionally perform on stage during the opening ceremony.

“It's very powerful," Olympic surfer Billy Stairmand said. "It's quite spiritual and it represents New Zealand in an awesome way, and it gets us together as a team and builds that morale and energy within us. It's a way for us to start the event together and as a whole and let everyone know that we have each other's back and we're here for a reason.”

Maori surfers Elliot Paerata Reid and Kehu Butler typically lead the haka and also teach their teammates the meaning of the movements.

“They've got a pretty strong history and good background of Maori and it's cool to have them around and learn from them,” Stairmand said. “We'll have a few trainings beforehand just so we're all in sync and doing the right actions.”

While New Zealand’s Pacific neighbours Australia do not have a haka, they do have something that sounds almost as menacing – the “Ring of Fire” .

Tokyo 2020 Olympian and reigning ISA World Surfing Games champion Sally Fitzgibbons has stood inside this ring many times as her teammates chanted alongside her.

“Just to hear that, ‘Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, come on’, everything inside of you is buzzing,” Fitzgibbons said.

Team chants are a common sight at surfing competitions with each nation bringing their own character and energy into the mix.

The chants can be a series of powerful words that all team members shout simultaneously, as is the case with Australia, or a back-and-forth between the athlete who has just completed their heat and their teammates, as with Team Brazil.

In the end, however, the goal is the same – to feel as one with the athletes around you and the flag stitched on your jerseys.

“It's to bring the group together and give us energy and make sure that we're representing,” Puerto Rico’s Dwight Pastrana explained. “We are really close. It's like a family almost over here. We've probably been travelling together three, four years already doing the same thing. We all know each other pretty well. We get together pretty well, and it gives us energy and almost more power to overtake all these challenges.”
