Juegoal Wooden Cribbage Board Game Set

The foremost feature that sets this cribbage board apart is its 3-player capacity. While many cribbage boards are designed for two-player games, the Juegoal board accommodates 2 to 3 players with ease, adding a new dimension to gameplay. The board’s design and construction exhibit impressive attention to detail. Crafted from high-quality wood, the board has a smooth, neatly cut surface without any sharp edges. It feels sturdy, safe, and non-toxic. At 14.7″ x 4″ x 1.7″, the board is sufficiently large for easy play yet still portable enough for travel, making it a perfect game companion for any setting.

One feature that I especially appreciate is the clever storage solution. The lid of the board slides open to reveal compartments for two decks of playing cards and nine metal cribbage pegs (in chrome, brass, and black). Not only is this practical, but it also adds a touch of elegance to the board.

The soft, brown velvet felt covering the bottom of the board is a thoughtful addition. It offers protection against slippage during intense game sessions and prevents scratches on your tabletops.

The board’s design is striking, with its alternating tracks of light maple and dark red bloodwood inlay, giving it a unique visual appeal. The natural colors of the woods lend an earthy feel to the board, which complements any gaming setup beautifully.

One aspect of the board that stands out is its 3-track layout, designed to accommodate games for up to three players. This allows for a more dynamic and competitive game compared to the standard two-player variant. Each track is meticulously engraved, ensuring easy and clear peg movement, and the board overall scores 120 points in a continuous pattern.

The inclusion of nine brass pegs, plated in gold, silver, and copper, add a luxurious touch to the gameplay. The metallic sheen of the pegs contrasts nicely against the wooden tracks, making it easy to identify each player’s position during the game.

The front of the board features a cleverly designed drawer to store the pegs, each having its own dedicated slot. This not only keeps the pegs secure but also adds a pleasing symmetry to the design. The magnetic lock ensures the drawer stays closed, preventing any accidental peg loss, while the wooden knob adds a dash of elegance.

The board, measuring 12.4″ x 3.5″ x 1″, is finished with three coats of catalyzed lacquer in a satin finish. This not only enhances the beauty of the wood but also offers protection against spills and general wear and tear, ensuring your board stays in prime condition for longer.

The scratch-resistant maroon velvet felt pad on the bottom of the board is a thoughtful addition. It prevents any potential damage to the surfaces it is placed on and enhances the board’s stability.

A free velvet bag for the board’s protection is an appreciated extra, making the board easier to store or carry while travelling.

One point to note is that this board does not include a storage section for playing cards, so they will need to be stored separately. However, this minor inconvenience is far outweighed by the board’s overall quality and craftsmanship.

What is a Travel Cribbage Board and Why Should I Get One?

Travel cribbage boards are compact, portable versions of traditional cribbage boards, a staple for the card game cribbage. These boards have everything you need to keep score during a game, including numbered holes for pegs and storage for cards.

Why should you get one? Here are three main reasons:

  • Portability : Travel cribbage boards are typically designed to be lightweight and compact, making them ideal for on-the-go gaming.
  • Durability : These boards are often made with sturdy materials to withstand the rigors of travel.
  • Fun : Playing cribbage can be a great way to pass time during long trips.

How Portable are Travel Cribbage Boards, Really?

Travel cribbage boards are highly portable. Their size and weight are specifically designed for easy transportation. Most travel cribbage boards can fit in a backpack, handbag, or even a large pocket. Moreover, their built-in storage for cards and pegs eliminates the need for carrying extra bags or containers.

Key Features to Look for Before Buying

When purchasing a travel cribbage board, consider the following features:

It should be compact enough for easy transport.

The board should be lightweight to avoid adding unnecessary weight to your luggage.

Ideally, the board should be made from durable material to withstand the rigors of travel.

Look for a design that appeals to you aesthetically and functionally.

The board should have a place to store pegs and cards.

Differences Between a Standard Cribbage Board and a Travel Cribbage Board

Standard cribbage boards and travel cribbage boards serve the same purpose—to keep track of the score during a cribbage game. However, they differ in a few key ways:

  • Size and Weight : Travel cribbage boards are designed to be smaller and lighter than standard boards.
  • Material : Travel boards are usually made of more durable materials to withstand being carried around.
  • Storage : Travel cribbage boards often have built-in storage for pegs and cards, a feature not always present in standard boards.

How to Maintain Your Cribbage Board When Travelling

Maintaining your travel cribbage board is crucial for its longevity. Here are some tips:

  • Cleaning : Wipe the board with a dry cloth to remove dust. Use a damp cloth for stubborn stains, but avoid soaking the board as it may warp.
  • Storage : When not in use, keep the board in a cool, dry place. Avoid leaving it in direct sunlight or in extreme temperatures.
  • Handling : Handle the board with care. Although it’s designed for travel, it’s still a game piece that could break under harsh treatment.

In conclusion, travel cribbage boards are a fantastic option for game enthusiasts looking to take their cribbage gameplay on the go. With their portability, durability, and added features such as storage, they provide a convenient and engaging way to enjoy cribbage wherever you travel.

In this post you’ll learn:

  • What is a travel vision board
  • How does it work
  • 4 steps how to make a travel vision board that works
  • How to get my vision board template

If you’re looking for an in-depth travel dream to reality (143 proven & tested) , I HIGHLY recommend this travel dream to reality ebook.

What is a Travel Vision Board

A travel vision board is a collection of all the places that you’d dream to visit. Your vision board is a perfect way to organize the places, city names, airport names, food to try, adventures, and anything that is inspirational to your travel list.

It sounds simple but there is POWER in visualizing your travel dreams especially when you back them up with proper planning.

The vision board was a random collage of magazine cutouts, stickers, inspirational quotes (nothing fancy really).  Whether you want a physical collection or a digital collage it’s up to you. There are no rules for this.

The World is yours…Make it happen!

Below is an example of my own personal travel vision board.  On the left side, I simply get some photos online of  my travel dreams to travel in business class  and one of the places that I want to visit one day.   The colorful village called  Cinque Terre in Italy came into manifestation in 2019.

My travel dreams didn’t happen overnight but they transpire in a series of days, months, years, and actions of working towards it that I layout on my travel vision board.

How Does It Work?

I am sure that you have tons of places to visit, ideas of things to do, local dishes to try, and images spinning around your head.

Yes, a travel vision board works!

Vision board works to help you organize through the tangled thoughts, goals, and create a smooth process and the outcome you want. I’ve always been a strong believer in the power of visualization and goal settings  in organizing my entire life whether when it comes to my traveling dreams, career, and money matters.

Create your vision board that contains everything from broad to vivid details, like traveling in business class with a glass of champagne or caviar.

And know exactly the places that you dream to visit someday, the local dishes you wish to try,  and the adventures you want to do either as a solo traveler or with your loved ones.

I love my vision board because it gives me a daily visual reminder to work hard towards my goals. Even when it comes to my dream house, I constantly update my vision board.

Underneath is my dream house that I created on my vision board in June 2018. Despite of the uncertainties caused by  the COVID-19 pandemic where millions of people lost their job,  I am so blessed to manifest my dream house this year (2021).

Vision boards don’t work alone but   instead, y ou need to take  proper planning  and steps towards making that goal to fruition.

Creating a travel vision board relates to your life direction and mindset. T he more I do them, the more I believe in them, and the more I got so obsessed with them – a sort of dream manifestation  for me.

SMART goals stand for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound.  See if these goals can be realistically achieved with your resources like time, money, and other factors.

If you want to learn about how to set smart goals, check my article about the  ultimate goal setting guide with my own personal examples.

I am sure you will gonna love this step.  Look out for images, words, elements for your vision board. G o through online to look for images or look at a stack of magazines you have. Put everything you like that relates to the travel vision board you are making.

Then, you will need something to build your travel vision board on.  Begin with your vision board base. You can use the back of your room door, fridge, whiteboard, or simply use electronics like your computer screen or smartphone as your board base.

3. Construct

Allocate a time to construct your ideal travel vision board.  There are really no rules when it comes to the best time to do it. The most important is you should be feeling good, motivated, and energized in doing your vision board.

Now, it’s time to add all those images, your own words, stickers, or other elements over your vision board.

Once your collage is complete, have it frame it or put it somewhere where you will see it regularly!

Make sure that you set your intention, review your progress, and do proper execution on how to attain your goals.

Your travel vision board is your best tool to get clarity about those dream destinations and adventures you want to do. And make it easy for you to move in the right direction because w hen you want to make your travel dream a reality you have to create a clear vision of what it should look like.

The 13 Best Travel Board Games You Can Play Anywhere (Even on a Plane)

travel in board

If you buy something using our links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Thanks for your support!

When you're stuck in a plane, train, or even the backseat of a car, you need a way to kill time... and board games are great for that!

Of course, mobile games are more convenient—unless you're like me and prone to motion sickness. Plus, these days I much prefer the tactile experience of cards and pieces, and we could all stand to spend less time staring at digital screens.

So, I think everyone should have at least one portable board game or card game that they can take with them while traveling!

What makes a great travel board game?

  • Small box. When you're traveling, space is at a premium. Carrying the game around shouldn't be a nuisance and it should fit comfortably inside a carry-on bag. If the entire game can fit inside your pocket, that's as good as it gets!
  • Minimal footprint. It can't take up too much table space. (Ideally, no table space at all!) Plus, it should have very few components. Not only are game pieces hard to handle while traveling, they're easy to accidentally bump off and lose forever.
  • Length and replayability. Whether your flight is 1 hour or 12 hours, the game should keep you engaged and help make time fly by. But it should also be under an hour per game so you aren't forced to cut it short if it happens to run too long.

Here are my picks for the best travel board games that are tiny, portable, and able to be played pretty much anywhere!

Note: You'll notice a distinct lack of Button Shy games on this list. While Button Shy games are famously tiny—each game is only 18 cards—they tend to take up a lot of table space. I've yet to find one that can comfortably play on an airplane tray.

13. The Mind

travel in board

Designed by Wolfgang Warsch

Supports 2 to 4 players

About 15 to 20 minutes

The Mind is a cooperative card game where everyone has their own hand of cards—from a deck numbered 1 through 100—and the goal is to play all cards in ascending order... without ANY communication.

With larger starting hands, the game gets more difficult. You start on Level 1 with one card each, then Level 2 with two cards each, up to whatever Level you can reach. Or you can just play (and replay) it on whatever Level you want to see how often you can win.

The Mind is a great card game for planes because it's mainly held in your hands (all cards played to a single pile) and the no-communication rule is a good fit when you're stuck in a loud plane with others around you.

travel in board

Designed by Mark Tuck

About 5 to 15 minutes

Grove is a brilliant solo puzzle-style card game that only consists of 18 cards and 15 dice that are used as point trackers.

The cards are basically tiles, which you place by overlapping previously played cards. When you overlap trees of the same color, you increase the value of those trees (which are tracked using the dice).

How bountiful will your grove be? Grove is a beat-your-own-score type game with a lot of replayability. The backs of each card have different victory conditions for variety.

Each game of Grove is relatively short but punchy, and it's a fantastic game to play while traveling.

11. Timeline

travel in board

Designed by Frédéric Henry

Supports 2 to 8 players

Timeline is a compact card game about figuring out where different events belong on a timeline.

Players have a hand of cards that each depict a specific event. Cards are played to a shared timeline and on each turn you have to place one card into the timeline. If it's not placed correctly, you draw another card. Otherwise, first to get rid of their cards wins!

Timeline is less about knowing the exact years when things happened and more about logically reasoning when things happened in relation to events already in the timeline. It's fun even if you know zero history!

Note: Timeline comes in several themed packs, which can be mixed and matched for more variety and difficulty. In addition to Timeline Inventions , there's also:

  • Timeline Classic
  • Timeline Events
  • Timeline British History

Similo is a deduction game where one player is trying to get everyone else to guess the right character from a grid of twelve.

On each turn, the active player plays a card and marks it as either SIMILAR or DIFFERENT. Based on that, the other players have to eliminate characters from the grid. If the correct character remains at the end, everyone shares victory!

Similo is like a better, more compact, and more fun Guess Who . The grid is randomized every time so there's replayability, plus the discussions that arise during elimination can be surprisingly funny.

Note: Similo comes in several themed packs, which can be mixed and matched for more variety and difficulty. In addition to Similo History , there's also:

  • Similo Myths
  • Similo Fables
  • Similo Animals
  • Similo Wild Animals
  • Similo Harry Potter

9. Hive Pocket

travel in board

Designed by John Yianni

Supports 2 players

About 20 to 40 minutes

Hive is one of the best head-to-head two-player board games if you want a pure abstract strategy game—and Hive Pocket is the portable travel edition that you can take anywhere.

There's no board in Hive ; the pieces ARE the board! As you place pieces and move them around, they dictate where future pieces can be placed and moved to. Each insect type has its own rules for how to move.

Hive Pocket has a tiny footprint and the tiles are made of durable plastic resin that's satisfying to play with. Moreover, Hive Pocket comes with two expansion insects already included!

travel in board

Designed by Kei Kajino

Supports 2 to 5 players

Scout is a ladder-climbing card-shedding game in the style of Crazy Eights or Chinese Poker , but it has a few twists that take it to the next level and make it one of the best in the genre.

First, you can't re-order your hand once it's dealt. Second, when you play cards, you collect the cards played by the previous player. Third, if you can't play any cards, you "scout" by taking a card from the previous player and adding it to your hand—and they earn a point.

When someone empties their hand, the round ends. Each player scores a point for each card they collected plus any scout points they earned.

Scout is a simple but deep card game that feels like an old-school card game but plays like a modern classic. It's the perfect travel card game for families who want something a little meatier.

7. The Crew: Mission Deep Sea

travel in board

Designed by Thomas Sing

The Crew: Mission Deep Sea is a cooperative trick-taking card game—a lot like Euchre or Hearts , except everyone is trying to accomplish certain tasks and helping others to achieve their tasks.

Examples of tasks in this game: "Win exactly 2 Blue cards" or "Win only the last trick" or "Win at least 1 card of each color." There are nearly 100 task cards and a random set is chosen every game.

The hard part is, there's no communication allowed! Except using the one-time communication token. With that token, you can reveal one card and mark it as either your HIGHEST of that color, your LOWEST of that color, or your ONLY card of that color.

Trick-taking card games have been a staple of societies for centuries, but the cooperative twist in The Crew: Mission Deep Sea makes it one of the best of its kind. It's so addictive!

6. Zombie Dice: Horde Edition

travel in board

Designed by Steve Jackson

Supports 2 to 100 players

About 10 to 20 minutes

Want to play a travel board game that's literally nothing but a set of 13 custom dice? Then Zombie Dice is your jam. ( Zombie Dice: Horde Edition includes the base game plus both expansions!)

In Zombie Dice , you're rolling and re-rolling three dice at a time, trying to score as many Brains as you can on your turn. Dice with Footsteps can be re-rolled, but dice with Shotguns can't—and if you ever have three Shotguns showing, you lose all the Brains from that round.

This is one of the purest push-your-luck games in existence, and it's so compact that you can play anywhere. Just make sure to roll inside the box cover to minimize the risk of losing any dice!

travel in board

Designed by Steffen Benndorf

Qwixx is what's known as a "roll and write" game: you roll dice, then use the results to write on your score pad.

In Qwixx , you're trying to fill out blocks 2 to 12 for each of four colors. The thing is, once you fill in a block, you can no longer fill any blocks to the left of that block for that particular color.

Once a player has five blocks filled in a color, they can choose to lock that color (no one else can fill that color anymore). Once two colors are locked, the game ends. The more blocks you've filled, the more points!

Ultimately, this game is a balancing act between smart decisions and pushing your luck. Qwixx packs a ton of fun into such a small box, and it's so easy to play anywhere—even on a plane.

4. Love Letter

travel in board

Designed by Seiji Kanai

About 15 to 30 minutes

Love Letter is one of the best portable card games of all time. It consists of a deck of 16 cards numbered from 1 to 8, with higher-value cards rarer than the lower-value cards.

This is a game of deduction and hand management. Each player starts with 1 card and the entire game is played like so: draw a card, play a card. The winner is whoever has the highest-value card in hand at the end.

But here's the twist: each card also has a special ability that triggers when played. One lets you peek at another's hand, another lets you trade hands, another lets you name a player and a card—if they're holding that card, they get eliminated from the round.

A round of Love Letter plays in just a few minutes, and whoever is first to win a predetermined number of rounds wins the game.

travel in board

3. Fantasy Realms

travel in board

Designed by Bruce Glassco

Supports 2 to 6 players

Fantasy Realms is my ultimate choice for portable card game. It's easy to learn and compact in size, with tons of gameplay packed in.

The game consists of a deck of 53 cards: 10 suits of 5 cards each, plus 3 wild cards. Each card has a base point value as well as a scoring mechanism that grants extra points (or loses points) depending on what other cards you have in your hand.

Players start with a hand of 7 cards, then turns are as a simple as drawing a card and discarding a card. Your hand at the end of the game determines your score and highest score wins.

Fantasy Realms can be taken anywhere and plays quickly. Every game is different as you try to figure out the best way to manage your own hand, and you can kill so much time without getting bored.

Note: Scoring can be unwieldy in Fantasy Realms , but the scoring companion app makes it much easier—just pick the cards in your hand and it'll spit out your score.

2. Palm Island

travel in board

Designed by Jon Mietling

Supports 1 to 2 players

There's one thing about Palm Island that makes it so perfect as a travel card game: it can play entirely in the palm of your hand. You don't even need a table or a lap! No other game is this portable.

Palm Island consists of 17 double-sided cards, with each side split into top and bottom halves. You'll go through the deck several times, tapping cards into resources then spending resources to upgrade cards (i.e. rotating and flipping them to their better actions).

It's a simple but thinky solo game that's played in a beat-your-own-score manner, so there's plenty of replayability.

But the key feature of Palm Island truly is its portability. Hand-only games are exceedingly rare and very few of them are worth playing long-term. Palm Island is the best of its kind.

1. Dungeons, Dice & Danger

travel in board

Designed by Richard Garfield

Supports 1 to 4 players

About 45 to 60 minutes

Dungeons, Dice & Danger is the meatiest experience you'll find for a game that's nothing more than a sheet of paper, a pencil, and five dice. You can really play it anywhere and lose yourself in it.

On your turn, you roll the four white dice and split the results into two pairs. Then, everyone uses those two pairs to mark off rooms on their personal dungeon sheet. (The active roller can also use the fifth black die to substitute one of the whites, but no one else can.)

You can only mark rooms that are adjacent to rooms you've already visited, and if you have no rooms to mark on a turn, you lose health which will reduce your score at the end.

You'll also be finding gems, looting treasure, unlocking special actions, and fighting monsters for more ways to earn points.

It's both surprising and impressive to get this much game out of just five dice. If you're going to be traveling a lot—especially on planes—I highly recommend Dungeons, Dice & Danger above all else.

Travel Vision Board: How to Organize Your Bucket List

Collage of printed Iceland travel photos, with text overlay - "how to make a travel vision board".

Is your bucket list overflowing with dream destinations? A travel vision board is the perfect way to organize your ideas and help make them a reality.

Collage of printed Iceland travel photos pinned to travel vision board.

My very first travel dream board was a haphazard collage of magazine cutouts and blurry printer photos. Not bad for a tween in the 2000s, but not exactly wanderlust-inspiring quality either.

Thankfully, modern technology has made it easy to create a beautiful travel vision board quickly and cheaply–no glue sticks required. Whether you want a physical collection or a digital collage, here are the steps to design your own vacation vision board.

Create a list of dream destinations and experiences

You probably have tons of trip ideas and images swirling around in your head. To sort through the jumble and create the perfect travel vision board, start by listing out your bucket list destinations and experiences.

There are no rules for this list. It can contain everything from broad locations to specific elements, like a luxury hotel room with a big bathtub. At this point, your only task is to get your thoughts down on paper (or computer screen).

It’s also helpful to write down the overall mood of the trip. For example, is it romantic? Relaxed? Adventurous? Include a few notes that set the scene, like “quiet sunsets on the beach”.

Here’s a list snippet from the travel board I made when planning a trip to Japan :

  • Snow monkeys
  • Hotel room with private onsen and nature views
  • Zenko-ji temple at sunrise
  • Relaxed evenings in bed

If you prefer digital lists, you can snag a free copy of my travel organizer by subscribing to my newsletter below!

Source photos for your travel vision board

Once you have a list of the key parts of your trip, it’s time to source the visuals that go with them!

There are tons of free online resources for travel photography. Here are some of my favorites:

  • Stocksnap.io

You can download printer-quality versions of photos from these sites, or save them on your computer for digital travel boards. As long as you’re keeping your board private (i.e. only for your personal use), you don’t need to worry about attribution.

Aside from stock photos, here are some other places to scout for travel images:

  • Magazines ( CN Traveller , National Geographic , etc.)

Find a few inspiration quotes

A travel vision board full of photos is fine, but adding extra elements turns the design up a notch.

Some people think travel quotes are cliche, but as an English major, I love a thoughtful passage. A quick Google search will turn up all sorts of inspiration, but these living abroad quotes and short travel quotes are good places to start.

You might also want to include some quotes about the specific destination you’re visiting. Doing a search of “books set in (destination)” or “books about (destination)” will give you the titles, which you can then search on Goodreads to find people’s favorite quotes.

Compile your favorites and set them aside until you decide if you’re going physical or digital with your board.

Save me for later!

Choose between digital and physical travel vision board ideas

There are a few different ways you can form your vacation vision board. Each has their pros and cons, and there are no “best” answers: the choice is yours.

We’ll dive into the specifics of how to create your board in the next step. For now, here are the tools you’ll need, as well as some physical and digital travel vision board ideas.

Physical travel boards

A physical travel board opens the door to endless possibilities. Will you go for the classic cork board collage? Or perhaps something more quirky, like a hanging mobile?

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Display your images and quotes on a cork board with clear push pins
  • Tape or glue your content and write/paint quotes onto poster board or canvas board
  • Hang everything from a photo mobile or photo strip
  • Form a border of images and quotes around a scratch-off map

Using a physical travel board gives you the option to display your board as art. You’ll also have more creative flexibility to use different mediums (ex. magazine clippings, vintage paper, etc.). The only downsides are that you’ll need to buy materials and print out photos.

Digital travel boards

If you’re looking for a fast and free way to make a travel vision board, digital is the way to go. All you need is a platform or software to organize everything into one image.

Here are some free options that have built-in collage templates:

  • Canva (my top recommendation–they also have tons of free photos!)
  • Google Slides

If you don’t care much for design and just want a space to organize your ideas, Pinterest is a great option. You can upload images or save them from the web, and even link them to travel resources to reference in the future.

Making a beautiful digital travel board is easy with the help of online templates. You also don’t have to worry about printing photos. However, your display options are limited–you’ll either need to view the board on your phone or computer when you want some inspiration, or figure out how to print a copy to display at home.

Arrange your content

Travel vision board layout with pastel beach photos and quote - "you don't have to be rich to travel well".

It’s time to flex those creative muscles! You don’t need to be an artist to pull together a beautiful travel board. Just follow a few basic rules to keep it cohesive and eye-pleasing:

  • Identify one image to be the focal point, and arrange everything to complement it
  • Choose a general color scheme–sites like Coolors can even generate a palette based on a photo you upload
  • Mix up the sizes and orientations of your images
  • Use a blend of close-up shots and zoomed out scenes

Here are a few more ways to add creative flair to your board:

  • Write your quotes on colorful or vintage-looking paper (or use a textured digital background to achieve the same effect)
  • Make a “days until departure” section (sticky notes work well for this)
  • Add magazine or newspaper clippings (or screenshots) from articles you read about the destination

Display your travel board in a strategic location

You’ve worked hard putting together your travel vision board, so why not display it in a prominent place? This is easier with a physical board, but there are ways to ensure digital versions get plenty of your attention.

I display my travel board in the living room, which is where I spend the most time (yes, I work from the dining table instead of a proper desk). It’s a nice source of comfort and inspiration when I’m feeling tired or overwhelmed. Plus, keeping it front-and-center helps curb impulse buying and delivery spending–I can’t afford to travel if I order takeaway three times a week!

For digital boards, I recommend making them your desktop background or phone wallpaper. If you have dynamic wallpaper, you could even split the board into multiple sections and have them rotate across your screen. You can also create a shortcut to the image location and put the icon on your home screen or desktop.

Planning to Fly? You’ll Need This ID.

For years, the government has warned travelers they will need a security-enhanced Real ID to board domestic flights, and for years the requirement has been delayed. Now they mean it.

By Debra Kamin

It’s a change nearly 20 years in the making: a post-Sept. 11 law requiring that U.S. travelers carry more than a standard driver’s license to board a domestic flight. Now, after years of delays, it is finally kicking into gear.

Beginning May 3, 2023, U.S. travelers flying within the United States will need to show Transportation Security Administration agents either a security-enhanced driver’s license that’s Real ID-compliant or another T.S.A.-approved form of identification like a passport. A state driver’s license that does not contain the Real ID seal will no longer be accepted.

What is Real ID, anyway?

Real ID is a driver’s license or identification card that bears a special seal, which signifies that the bearer of the card has been screened and approved according to a standard set by the federal government, rather than just by the state issuing the license.

Why is this change taking place?

In the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks, the U.S. government realized that nearly all of the hijackers who boarded commercial planes and crashed them into the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and a field in Shanksville, Penn., were carrying U.S. driver’s licenses and state IDs, and most of those documents had been obtained fraudulently.

In the years that followed, the federal government began an effort to tighten national standards for state-issued documentation, and in 2005, Congress passed the Real ID Act. The act sets minimum standards for driver’s licenses and other types of identification cards. Once the law kicks into gear, any traveler who wishes to use a driver’s license or state-issued ID at a T.S.A. checkpoint must make sure that it is Real ID-compliant.

“The findings of the 9/11 Commission clearly identified gaps in security management of state-level procured identity cards and driver’s licenses,” said Frank Harrison, the North America regional security director for World Travel Protection , a risk management company. “The Real ID Act provides a national framework of screening and approval to ensure consistency and integrity of programs. In other words, each state will maintain authority over their ID issuances, but they collectively will adhere to one standard of practice.”

The Real ID Act was initially set to be enforced in 2008 and has been delayed a number of times.

“It’s remarkable how long it has taken for this to come into effect,” said Scott Keyes, the founder of the travel platform Scott’s Cheap Flights . “It’s been decades in the making.”

How do I know if my license is a Real ID?

The easiest way to tell is just to look at it. Real ID-compliant driver’s licenses have a star, usually in gold or black. The stars look slightly different on each state’s licenses — in California, it sits on top of an image of a bear, which is the state animal.

A license that is not Real-ID compliant will not have a star in the corner, and some will also have the words “federal limits apply.”

Can I get a Real ID regardless of where I live?

Real ID-compliant licenses and identification cards are now being issued in all 50 states as well as the District of Columbia and the majority of U.S. territories. American Samoa is not yet issuing them.

What do I need to get a Real ID?

Each state has a different process for applying for a Real ID, so applicants should check requirements online. New Yorkers can visit a special Department of Motor Vehicles page detailing the process; many other states, including California and Texas, offer similar sites either through their D.M.V. or government portals. In most instances, you can get a Real ID by visiting your local D.M.V., either as part of a standard license renewal or by filling out a special application.

But no matter where you live, to apply for a Real ID or change your license over, you’ll need to provide a Social Security number, prove your address through documents like a utility bill or bank statement, and verify your identity through a handful of additional documents like a birth certificate or passport.

In many instances, there is no additional cost to receive a Real ID if you’re already renewing your license, although some states charge extra — in Pennsylvania, for example, it’s an additional $30 on top of the renewal fee.

If I don’t get a Real ID, can I still fly?

Yes. There are a number of other forms of identification that T.S.A. agents will accept for domestic air travel starting in May. These include a passport, a permanent residency card (also known as a Green Card), or the card for trusted traveler programs, including Global Entry and NEXUS , which allows pre-screened travelers to transit quickly across the United States-Canada border.

In addition, a handful of states — Minnesota, Michigan, New York, Washington and Vermont — offer Enhanced Driver’s Licenses , or E.D.L.s. Some travelers may prefer to opt for these over a Real ID because they can also be used at some land or sea border crossings. They provide proof of U.S. citizenship, much like a passport, and are equipped with a radio-frequency identification (RFID) chip that can display biographic and biometric data on the owner, including facial image, gender, date of birth and citizenship status, to U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents.

E.D.L.s are Real ID-compliant, as well, although instead of a star, they have an American flag. The flag’s location varies by state.

E.D.L.s can be used by travelers crossing land and sea borders to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean, but they can’t be used in lieu of a passport if you’re traveling anywhere by air.

Do children need a Real ID?

No. The T.S.A. doesn’t require kids under the age of 18 to show any identification right now when they’re traveling domestically with an adult.

For international travel, children of all ages are required to carry passports and that will continue.

Can a Real ID be used as a replacement for any other form of identification, like a passport?

It can’t. For the vast majority of travelers, becoming Real ID-compliant will be a matter of simply updating their driver’s licenses. Real IDs cannot be used at any international border, including land crossings with Canada and Mexico, and they can’t be used for sea travel on a cruise, either. International travelers will still be required to carry a passport.

Should I be concerned about my personal privacy?

Maybe. Many organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union of New York, have decried the Real ID Act as a threat to personal privacy and an overstep of information gathering on the part of the federal government.

“A lot of the security and privacy concerns revolve around the fact that it’s pushing every state’s D.M.V. into a national database,” said Anaya Robinson, a senior policy strategist for the A.C.L.U. of Colorado. “If someone were to hack that singular database, they could get the personal information of anyone.”

For undocumented immigrants who seek out driver’s licenses so they can legally operate a motor vehicle, the shift to Real ID also presents a threat, Mr. Robinson added. “There’s a severe privacy concern in the immigration space of the federal government, Homeland Security and I.C.E. being able to access that information,” he said.

In addition to centralizing personal data like addresses and citizenship status into a federal database, the cards also carry a machine-readable zone that can be scanned for information on the card owner’s identity, which detractors say also presents a risk of identify theft.

But only 37 percent of Americans have a passport, according to estimates from the U.S. State Department, so if you plan to fly after May 2023 and don’t want to scramble with alternative documentation, you’ll need to update your driver’s license.

An earlier version of this article misstated the location of the American flag on Enhanced Driver’s Licenses. While the flag often appears in either the upper right corner or the bottom right corner of a driver’s license, in some cases it appears elsewhere on the license, depending on the state.

An earlier version of this article misstated the location of the star that indicates a driver’s license is Real ID-compliant. While the star is usually in the top upper corner of the license, occasionally, as in the instance of Alabama licenses, it is not.

How To Travel With A Longboard: The Only Guide You Need

travel with longboard

If you’ve ever been on a trip and come across the perfect longboarding spot, you know the feeling of longing that can arise. “If I’d only brought my board,” you think out loud. Of course, the reason you left your board at home is because you didn’t want to be tethered to a three-and-a-half-foot wooden anchor. But in truth, having a longboard when you want one is worth carrying one. If you’re just starting out in longboarding, you shouldn’t have a giant board anyway. There are great longboards for beginners aren’t too long .

Don’t get it twisted. It’s not that the word longboard is a misnomer. No, some of them are definitely long. What people who have not traveled with one often fail to understand, though, is that they are not as cumbersome as they appear. You can bring your board with you on your journey, regardless of your means of transport. You will barely notice it until you set urethane to concrete, and then you will be thrilled that you brought it. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you trek with your setup in tow.

When traveling with a longboard, it is wise to have a way to bind it down and stow it. Skateboard backpacks work great for street and park boards but, these are usually too small to be effective longboard bags. Recently though, a few manufacturers have begun to cater to this niche in their market. Backpacks with straps large enough to hold a longboard are available.

Another tip is to simply pass a longboard through the shoulder straps of any backpack so that the bottom is facing your back. Once you put on the backpack, you will hardly notice the board. Just remember not to overstuff the backpack with gear, which makes riding and carving on a longboard much more difficult. Travel light to remain light on your board.

There are only so many ways of getting anywhere and, though each may seem more burdensome with a longboard, the truth is less daunting. Longboards are more common than ever, and carriers have made traveling with them simple. No matter the hurdles, riding fresh surfaces in new places is worth the added time it takes to tote a longboard.

In the modern age, air travel is by far the most complicated way to get anywhere. The long lines and the security is enough to give anyone pause, especially someone flying with a longboard. To make matters worse, carriers demand that travelers check longboards with their luggage — no carry-ons. So, you can’t even use it to see the sights on a layover. That said, it is almost always better to have a longboard when you get to your destination, regardless of where it is. The freedom of movement longboarding brings is best enjoyed in unique locales.

Trains and Buses

Ground-bound public transport is where having a longboard pays dividends. Lengthy layovers are common on wheeled transit, providing the perfect opportunity to peel some urethane trails. It affords the ability to see things in a short time that would have otherwise gone unseen, and you’ll make memories that might have been a terminal bore. Your arrival at your destination might not be the experience it would have, but you will never look at layovers the same way again.

One thing to remember when traveling by public transportation is to bind your board securely to your pack. Bungee cords work great for this, because they come apart as easily as they go together, but rope will do in a pinch. When stowing a loose board, look to put it under your seat, and be sure to place it grip tape down so it doesn’t roll around on the floor.

Hiking and Hitching

Of course, traveling by mass transit need not be the only way one gets places. Properly set up, longboards are capable of being the mode of long-distance travel rather than the baggage. Large, soft longboarding wheels smooth out rough and uneven highway surfaces with ease, and quality bearings make for as much coasting as pushing. If we see more of a country on trains than on planes, we see it all on a longboard. Suddenly, a cross-country trip becomes a story to tell the grandkids.

If you are about to set out on a journey, and you’re thinking of making it an adventure, consider bringing a longboard along for the trip. Throwing it over the shoulders for carrying is as easy as hooking it up to a backpack, and it is a set of wheels when walking becomes monotonous. The things that are just out of range on layovers become experiences, and the unique terrains of destinations emerge as the whole point of travel, rather than the regret they are when we’re boardless. With a little forethought, your longboard will be that one travel companion that always spurs you to get moving, to see new things and to live a little.
