travel talk egypt and jordan

An honest review of Travel Talk Tours; Egypt and Jordan

Hello friends! It’s been a while. We’ve been some busy little travelers this past year that we’ve been away. We have a quite a bit to catch up on, that’s for sure! We’re gonna make this first blog post fairly simple. We’ll get into the nitty gritty details in the next few posts about our recent trip to Egypt, Jordan, and Israel. For today, I just want to get started on a little review of the company we chose for that trip – Travel Talk Tours .

We ended up choosing to do a tour of Egypt and Jordan, then traveled through Israel on our own. We’ve never done a tour before, but it seemed like an easy choice for this trip since there is SO much to see. Visiting Egypt has been a childhood dream of mine. It just seemed like such a daunting task trying to fit everything. There is a lot to do and see in these countries. Since it is a much different type of trip than visiting somewhere like Europe, it gave us peace of mind having the transportation and planning figured out for us.

We’re very glad we ended up doing a tour and 100% recommend seeing this part of the world in this way. We brought along two friends on this trip and I think we all agree that this was the trip of a freaking lifetime ! It was so fun to experience it all with each other! If you’re on the fence about visiting any of these 3 countries, I can confidently say that you should definitely GO!

Since I couldn’t find a ton of resources on this specific tour, I’ll breakdown what we did, how much it cost us, and all the things I wish we would have known ahead of time. I hope this is helpful and I hope one day you all make it to see this part of our world!

Travel Talk

We chose Travel Talk Tours for our Egypt and Jordan adventures. We ended up going with them for a couple of reasons.

They offered the most options when it came to itineraries and the routes that they followed throughout Egypt and Jordan.

They cater to a younger, more adventurous crowd which appealed to us since we love meeting other likeminded travelers. Their demographic is 18-39, although we did have a couple travelers who went over this age range. They got along just fine, so if you happen to not meet that age criteria, don’t let it deter you!

The other reason is their price point. Travel Talk’s base price is pretty cheap for what is offered. They basically cover all hotel rooms, breakfasts, and the transportation between stops. Compared to a few other tour companies this is the best bang for your buck. We’ll get more into the pricing in a bit.

Egyptian Hieroglyphics

We chose the 15 day Egypt and Jordan discovered by Nile Cruise . We were choosing between the Nile Cruise and the Felucca tour and we’re VERY grateful we went with the cruise. I’ll definitely go in to more detail in the next post about our actual days spent in Egypt, but lets just say that when we were all needing a toilet every 15 minutes, it was really nice to retreat to our own room to do so. 🙂 The felucca is basically a sailboat that they turn into a big bed that sleeps 10-15 people. A lot of our group went with the felucca and loved it, although it was a bit more of a rugged experience. The bathroom is located on a little motor boat that follows the felucca and will come close when you need it. The felucca group did get to swim in the Nile and have beach bonfires, so it just really depends on what kind of experience you want.

Egypt Cruise

The accommodations of Travel Talk are exceptionally nice and most of them are 3-5 star hotels. A few of the places we stayed were the nicest hotels we had ever been to. Which was a nice surprise because I’ll be honest – I didn’t expect that in Egypt. A lot of our preconceived ideas about the country were shattered, in the best way!

We started in Cairo and ended in Amman, Jordan. We spent 11 days in Egypt – about 9 days on the Africa side and 2 days on the Asia side on the Sinai Peninsula. Then we journeyed to Jordan for the last 4 days. Although there’s always places you wish you had a little extra time in, I think this amount of time in each place was really adequate for all the major sites and monuments. Here’s a look at how our route went with the number of days we spent at each stop.

travel talk egypt and jordan

Along with that, they do a great job of showing you all the touristy and famous sites, along with experiences you wouldn’t normally know about or see online. They mix the tourist and local stuff really well to make it still feel like you’re getting a unique experience instead of a super generic tour. For example, we went to a lot of local bazaars and had dinner with local families. For the price, we felt like we got the most convenient and compre hensive tour of Egypt and Jordan.

Egyptian Pyramids

Price Breakdown

Travel Talk actually does a decent amount of discounted pricing throughout the year and it’s worth it to wait for that. We bought our tour when they were doing a 2 for 1 sale, which gave us a significant discount. I recommend signing up for their email subscription so you know when their next sale is coming. We got our tours for $1260 per person, saving us almost $500 on each tour. On top of this price we paid $250 per person in cash when we checked into Cairo. I’m still unsure what this totally went to, although it was described online as a local payment.

The pricing of our same tour is currently $1700, but now includes the local payment. The biggest thing to note is that the tour is not all inclusive. It doesn’t include any of your entrance tickets, meals outside of breakfast, tips, visa, or transportation to the airport. This isn’t the case for all of the tours, so look into the fine print when deciding on which suits you best. We didn’t have to figure out our transportation from the Cairo airport to our first hotel, but did find transportation out of Jordan. Make sure to factor a taxi price into your budget as well.

I’ll be completely honest, there was a lot of extras that we paid for on our own. There was about 6 optional activities in Egypt and 4 in Jordan. We knew we probably wouldn’t be back to this area for a while so we partook in everything! This added to the feeling that everything was a “once in a lifetime” thing. We did almost every single activity and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend you do the same! Be prepared to pay a decent amount on top of your base tour price and budget for the extra expense. If you’re a single person, it won’t be as bad. As a couple we paid quite a bit more than we had initially anticipated – but still recommend doing everything extra!

Hot Air Balloon Ride

We paid for all of our lunches and most of our dinners, averaging about $10-12 per person per meal. Breakfasts were almost always provided and they were always a large spread. Our cruise meals were included, so for 3 days we didn’t worry about buying any meals.

Another thing we didn’t initially realize we were paying for was our entrance tickets to the monuments. This ended up being a pretty significant amount of money. Again, if you know how much to budget for it, it doesn’t have to seem like so much. That’s why we’re here to help, since we had literally no idea what we needed to save!

On our first night in Cairo, we were given a list of the optional activities that we paid for in advance that night. As well as paying for the activities, Travel Talk also collects a mandatory tip for the hotel staff and the drivers. This goes for Egypt and Jordan. At the end of our time in Egypt, we gave a cash tip to our guide Mo and another cash tip to our guide in Jordan. Although this is technically optional to tip your tour guide, we recommend budgeting this in because your guide is well deserving! It’s up to you how much to tip, although Travel Talk recommends $3-5 a day as a fair price.

Backsheesh In Egypt, NOTHING is free. Culturally, there is a tipping system called the backsheesh. You will hear it for just about everything. Someone opens the door for you, tip. Someone offers to take your photo in front of a monument, tip. It can be really overwhelming and at times pretty annoying, but it’s part of the Egyptian culture! We just made sure to ask Mo when it was actually appropriate and when we should give someone a backsheesh. Make sure to keep some small bills and coins on you when the backsheesh occasion occurs.

Price  Breakdown Per Person Tour: $1260 Local Payment: $250 Travel Insurance: $182

Egypt   Visas: $25  Entrance Fees: $140 Optional Activities: $360 Meals : $60 Snacks/Alcohol: $68 Souvenirs: $55 Tips: $80 Approximate Egypt Total: $758

* Approximate Total per person : $2,802 – this will depend on the extras you choose, souvenirs, etc. and doesn’t include your flights!

Having a guide

This one doesn’t need too much explaining. A guide felt essential, especially in Egypt and was also nice in Jordan. We just couldn’t have gotten the same background history on our own. Our experience in Egypt really wouldn’t have been the same without our tour guide, Mo. He was local to the area, born and raised in Aswan and had studied immensely to be a tour guide. We got to explore a lot more on our own in Jordan but our guide Osama was very helpful when it came to the history of the country and the attractions we visited.

Tour size vs. group size

This one is a little hard to explain but I’ll try my best. Since there are so many different options for tours, Travel Talk breaks people up in to smaller groups based on your itinerary. Lets say there was 100 of us that started our journey in Cairo all together. We got broken up into 3 groups – A, B, and C – of around 30 people. Most of our group (B) was on the same tour through Egypt, but some split up before we headed to Jordan. Some people from group C ended up on our Jordan tour – so we got new friends for that leg of the trip. This smaller size group ensured none of us could really get lost and we got a more intimate experience with our guide and each other.

Having the itinerary taken care of/ease of travel

I mentioned this above already, but it cannot be understated. Egypt was a daunting place to plan and the fact there was an itinerary that felt just for us was amazing. Our itinerary hit everything I wanted to see and even things I didn’t know I would’ve missed seeing. The fact that all of our inner city and inner country transportation was taken care of gave us total peace of mind. Especially since the public transportation is basically non existent. Having a nice air conditioned bus in 100 degree weather was the cherry on top.

We felt very safe

This could have been due to the fact we had a really nice bus (the nicest out of all 3 groups!) or maybe that we had a security guard on board with us at all times. Either way, Egypt and Jordan were both 10 times more safe than we anticipated. Cairo was probably the place we felt most unsafe – but in a city of 21 million people, I think that’s normal. We also had a full blown police escort when the 3 tour groups caravanned to southern Egypt and back. The Egyptian Tourism Board actually requires this for tour groups. They are definitely taking precautions to make tourists feel safe!

Meeting new people while still getting privacy

You guys know we are big proponents of hostels, we love them. We love the experience that hostels bring us getting to meet new people. This tour gave us the luxury of having our own room but still getting that hostel style experience with our group mates. This was probably one our favorite elements of the tour. If you’re a single on this tour, Travel Talk will bunk you up with another single, most of the time. Maybe you’ll get lucky and get your own room for a night or two! Either way, everyone will be meeting up in the common areas to hang out so you’ll get a chance to meet new people no matter what.

travel talk egypt and jordan

The extra expenses

This can be avoided when you know ahead of time how much to budget or at least a ballpark range. You also don’t have to partake in every optional activity and can save money by not doing lunches with the group. We recommend not doing that, but if you’re really on a tight budget it might help.

The time spent traveling between places

This just comes with the type of trip this is. I’m not sure there’s a way to avoid this unless you have an unlimited amount of time to visit these countries. Even then, you’re probably not interested in doing a tour if that was the case.

Not enough time in some of the monuments

This one comes with the territory too. It’s already hard to herd a group of 30 or so people through a monument. Then add the time explaining to them the vast history and then also giving them free time to explore on their own. We spent extra time in some places we wish we didn’t and didn’t get enough in the places we really wanted. Sometimes it just works like that. Our guide was really gracious to our group and let us go off on our own if we didn’t want to listen to his explanation. He always gave us a time to be back at the bus and let us make our own decisions.

travel talk egypt and jordan

Final Thoughts

Go in with an open mind! Like I mentioned above, sometimes we can’t get the best of both worlds. Yes we spend a lot more time in the bus than we initially anticipated, but your options are seeing the most you can or spending an extended amount of time in Egypt. Given the timeframe, we had to maximize our time the best we could. This also goes with your preconceived ideas about the country of Egypt itself. We had our own ideas about its safety, culture, people, religion, etc. We learned a LOT and we’re really grateful we had a local guide to show us the good, bad, and ugly of his country. He really changed our view of the Egyptian people.

Egypt and Jordan are both Muslim countries. If you’ve followed this blog or know Kenny and I at all, you know we love to find the best local beer when we travel. This was probably the biggest culture shock we experienced – alcohol is almost NON EXISTENT. Egyptians smoke like its a national pastime, but you won’t find a corner bar anywhere in the country. Now, they know that most tourists aren’t Muslim. There are duty free stores to buy booze, open at very specific times. For certain times, like the cruise or felucca, your guide will get a list of alcohol you want and bring it for your convenience to enjoy. Don’t plan on finding anything you’re used to in the States, and to be honest, don’t even plan on liking what you’re drinking. But if you really have a hankering for a beer or liquor, there will be at least one option from the duty free stores. Just something to be aware of, since it was very different than anywhere we’d ever been. We’re gonna talk a lot more about this in our podcast episode on Egypt, coming soon!

If you’re on the fence between the Nile Cruise and the Felucca, I’d still say go with the Cruise. Most of our group went with the Felucca and had a great time, but we loved our intimate and relaxing time on the river boat. The felucca is definitely a very unique activity, but if having a bathroom close by is important to you, go with the cruise. We might have missed the beach bonfires but I think we got just as fun of an experience with the cruise staff and small group activities.

Do all the optional activities! A lot of them are things you might not ever get to do again in your life so why not live it up while you’re here!

At some point during your time in Egypt, you will probably get sick. Almost everyone on our tour got sick. Drink only bottled water and for the first couple days try not to eat anything raw or uncooked. Travel insurance was mandatory on our tour but I’m so glad we had it just in case. We went with World Nomads and definitely recommend having insurance for this trip!

15 Day Egypt And Jordan Tour – The Ultimate Guide

Egypt and Jordan are two countries that have fascinated me for years!

Since watching Hollywood feature films such as ‘The Mummy’ and countless documentaries on ancient Egyptian history, it’s a whole different level seeing it all in the flesh and by far exceeding all expectations.

I have put together this 15-Day Egypt and Jordan Tour Itinerary based on my trip with Travel Talk Tours , one of the most reputable tour companies in Europe and the Middle East.

Here is an overview of all the places we visited in this exact order on the 15 Day Egypt and Jordan Tour:

15 DAY EGYPT & JORDAN TOUR

Day 1:  arrival in cairo.

I arrived at Cairo International Airport for the beginning of the 15-Day Egypt and Jordan Tour. A driver from Travel Talk was conveniently awaiting my arrival and from here we drove directly to the hotel in Cairo.

I met the other tour members and our guide for a group briefing on the tour before we all headed out for a fantastic dinner cruise on the Nile River.

DAY 2:  GIZA PLATEAU

A 7 am start to explore the first exciting locations on the Egypt Itinerary, The Great Pyramids Of Giza, Saqqara, and the Great Sphinx, all of which reside in the Giza Plateau .

THE GREAT PYRAMIDS OF GIZA

The 3 Pyramids of Giza Mykerinos, Cheops, and Chephren are hands down the most incredible structures I have ever seen in my life.

The million-dollar question is how were they built and a question that may never be answered.

The Great Pyramids of Giza are classed as one of the Seven Wonders of the World, which are now the oldest and the longest surviving archaeological sites in existence.

I was left speechless and absolutely mind-blown as I wandered around the Giza Plateau. Gazing upon the Great Pyramids with my own eyes was ten times better than I had imagined it to be.

So much history and conspiracy theories lie behind the walls of the Great Pyramids, which are said to have housed the remains of deceased Pharaohs who ruled over ancient Egypt.

Interesting fact: The construction of the Great Pyramid of Giza would have taken approximately 30 years and 100 thousand men to have conveyed, carved, and carefully placed 2.3 million blocks of stone with an average weight of 2.5 tons to complete this perfect pyramid structure.

Believe it… or not?

Saqqara is a burial ground in the Giza Plateau and it holds the oldest stone building complex known in history.

The stepped Pyramid of Djoser is the most appealing attraction at Saqqara which is also known as the Step Tomb due to its rectangular base.

The Step Pyramid was exposed from under the sand in 1924 and it is under constant restoration.

My favorite spot in Saqqara was the funerary complex of Djoser because of its high walls, cubic-like structure, and vibrant orange colors throughout.

THE GREAT SPHINX

The Great Sphinx of Giza is a mythical creature that has the head of a human and the body of a lion that lies in the Giza Plateau directly in front of the Great Pyramids.

The Great Sphinx is mythicized as treacherous and those who cannot answer its riddle suffer the fate of being killed and eaten by the monster.

The Great Sphinx was one of my favorite locations to shoot in the Giza Plateau as the head of the Sphinx lines up perfectly in the center of one of the Great Pyramids.

After a full day of exploring the Giza Plateau on day 2, we headed south on the bus for a 10-hour journey to Luxor, arriving at the hotel around midnight.

DAY 3:   LUXOR

Karnak temple.

Day 3 on the Egypt itinerary kicks off with an early start for exploring Karnak Temple in Luxor .

Karnak in Arabic means ‘fortified village’ and the complex is a mix of tall pylons, decayed temple structures, and detailed hieroglyphs.

It is said that the Karnak Temple was built by thirty Pharaohs, enabling it to reach a complex size and such diversity that is not seen anywhere else in Egypt. Karnak Temple was also the main place of worship in Theben times.

At the heart of the complex, the Temple of Amun dominates the hypostyle hall made up of enormous pylons. The enormity of these pylons is absolutely insane and it makes you question the construction and placement of them all in ancient times.

The Karnak Temple was one of my favorite locations to explore in Luxor and it is clear why it is a must-see attraction on the Egypt Tour.

After exploring the Temple of Karnak in Luxor we stopped at a local restaurant for lunch, which was delicious, before continuing on the bus to Aswan which is the next destination of the trip.

DAY 4: ASWAN

Abu simbel temple.

A 4 am wake-up call to make the 3-hour drive south of Aswan to Abu Simbel.

The archaeological site of Abu Simbel is very famous for its two magnificent temple structures that were built by the Egyptian king, Ramses II.

One temple features statue figures of Ramses that have been carved into the limestone cliff, which was built in dedication to the sun gods, Amon-Re and Re-Horakhte.

In fact, on two days of the year, February 22nd and October 22nd, the sun penetrates the entire length of the temple and illuminates the shrine in the holy of holies.

The second temple at Abu Simbel is dedicated to Ramses Queen, Nefertari. The outside of the temple features six carved statues of the Queen and King that stand 10.5 meters tall.

When I was exploring the Abu Simbel complex I couldn’t stop imagining what it would have been like to be present during ancient Egyptian times.

The long and rich history of this country fascinates me more than any other country has before.

From Abu Simbel, the Travel Talk Tours squad and I jumped back on the bus and made the 3-hour return journey to Aswan to explore the island temple known as Philae.

abu simbal 8

PHILAE TEMPLE

Philae Temple, also known as the Temple of Isis, is one of my favorite temples we got to visit.

Only accessible by boat, this island temple features a mix of courtyards, high walls, pylon structures, rubbled terraces, and ancient hieroglyphic carvings.

Philae Temple, built in 690 AD, is dedicated to the goddess Isis and the temple serves as an example of the cult that was built around her story which also includes Osiris and Horus.

After a long day of temple hopping, we returned to the hotel in Aswan briefly to get ready for the 2-nights and 1-day Felucca cruise on the Nile River.

A short walk across the street to the pier to board the Felucca and we were off with the wind down the Nile as the sun began to set over the horizon.

The boat operators are local Nubians that took care of us over the 2-day Felucca adventure.

They cooked up a traditional-style dinner and we enjoyed the night listening to tunes, drinking beers, and smoking the flavored tobacco sheesha!

philae temple

DAY 5: FELUCCA CRUISE

Another early rise on day 5 as the sun peeped through the curtains of the Felucca.

For those of you who don’t know what a Felucca is, it is a traditional wooden sailing boat with one sail and no motor.

They have a large open seating/sleeping area padded with cushions and blankets and a sturdy mast that holds the large canvas sail in place.

We spent the day cruising ever so slowly and peacefully down the Nile as we shared stories, played cards, took photos, and maxed relaxed.

It was a super chill day that was much needed after zipping around to all the awesome sites over the previous 4 days.

Our captain beached the boat on the edge of the Nile so we could enjoy a refreshing swim/shower in the river and sunbake on the sand.

After lunch, we sailed a little further down the Nile to another spot to park up for the night.

The Nubians sparked up a bonfire, pulled out their djembe drums, and played some traditional Egyptian music as we all danced and chanted around the campfire.

The Felucca cruise was definitely one of the biggest highlights for me on the Egypt Itinerary.

DAY 6: LUXOR

Edfu temple.

We farewelled our captain and his Nubian team and made our way to Edfu Temple, or as our tour guide, Mustafa calls it, the Hangover Temple 😉 .

Edfu Temple is one of the best-preserved archaeological sites in all of Egypt and the largest temple dedicated to the falcon god, Horus.

Inside the walls of the Edfu Temple are hieroglyphic inscriptions and scenes which contain important information on language, myth, and religion during ancient Egyptian times.

We were all given some free time in the afternoon to chill at the hotel in Luxor before visiting the Luxor Temple by night.

LUXOR TEMPLE

Unlike most temples in Egypt, the Luxor Temple is not dedicated to a cult god but instead dedicated to the rejuvenation of kingship where many Egyptian Kings were crowned.

Exploring the Luxor Temple by night was incredible. You can’t miss the hypostyle courtyard at the back with enormous pylons illuminated by light!

DAY 7: LUXOR

A sunrise hot air balloon flight was planned on Day 7 but unfortunately, due to unsuitable weather conditions, we weren’t able to take flight.

HATSHEPSUT TEMPLE

After a buffet breakfast, we checked out of the hotel and made our way to the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir El-Bahri.

This temple is one of the most distinctive temples in Egypt which is made from limestone, not sandstone.

It was built to commemorate the achievements of Queen Hatshepsut as well as a sanctuary of the god Amon Ra.

Hatshepsut Temple is situated at the end of a rocky valley and behind it is a mountainous backdrop known as the Peak of Thebes.

The temple is a 3-tiered structure joined by long ramps and a panoramic viewpoint of the region awaits you on the highest terrace.

VALLEY OF THE KINGS

From here we continued our tour and drove for a further 15 minutes to the world-famous Valley Of The Kings and the City Of The Dead.

It is here where the royal tombs of all the kings and high officials were found cut into the rock valley.

These once-hidden tombs are richly decorated from top to bottom with colorful hieroglyphs, painting a story of ancient Egyptian times.

It was so surreal walking through the Valley of the Kings, hopping between the royal tombs and it is an experience that I will never forget!

After a couple of hours of exploring the Valley of the Kings, we stopped at a local restaurant for a BBQ lunch before making the 10-hour bus journey back to Cairo.

DAY 8: CAIRO CITY

The tour continues with a jam-packed day of sightseeing in Cairo City.

Firstly, we visited the Egyptian Museum which is one of the most important museums on the planet, holding more than 150,000 relics of Egypt, followed by the Citadel of Saladin, the Mosque of Muhammed Ali, the Hanging Church, and the world-famous Kahn El Khalili Bazaar.

DAY 9 & 10: DAHAB

A 4:00 am start for a 10-hour bus ride to Dahab. We finally arrived and checked in to the Dahab Paradise Hotel, located a stone’s throw away from the Red Sea.

That afternoon we went on a 2-hour ATV adventure on the outskirts of Dahab. It was such a buzz convoying through the desert-like landscape, leaving a cloud of dust behind us.

We stopped at a desert camp surrounded by rocky mountains and hiked for 10 minutes to a small peak to watch the sunset.

I was blown away at the sight of this crazy and unique landscape, boasting enormous cliffs right on the edge of the Red Sea.

After an epic afternoon on the ATVs, we headed back to Dahab Paradise Hotel for dinner and drinks around the campfire.

egypt itinerary, egypt and jordan tour, egypt and jordan tours, egypt and jordan

On our second day in Dahab, we geared up to go snorkeling at the famous Blue Hole snorkeling/diving site, just a 10-minute drive from the hotel.

The water clarity at this specific location in the Red Sea is the clearest water that I have ever seen in my life!

Besides the insane clarity, there is a coral rock wall drop-off as soon as you step into the ocean, which is home to an abundance of brightly colored fish and other fascinating sea creatures.

I could have easily spent hours hanging out underwater here at the Blue Hole but it was time to head back to the hotel for lunch.

For scuba diving enthusiasts, beginner to advanced, there is the option to spend the afternoon diving in the Red Sea.

I personally didn’t go diving as I have had an ear injury in the past which prevents me from diving, but the others said it was the best diving experience they have ever had!

That evening, we drove 30 minutes into the desert to have a traditional Bedouin dinner by a blazing campfire.

The moon was full and the stars blanketed the sky as we chowed down on a delicious feast followed by a drumming performance and some party games.

DAY 11: WADI RUM

It was time to say goodbye to our Egypt guide, Mustafa and we headed to Nuweibaa Port to take the ferry across to Aqaba Port and see the best things to do in Jordan !

The ferry transit took quite a while and we didn’t arrive in Jordan until 5 pm. Unfortunately, my drone camera was picked up by customs security at Aqaba Port and confiscated after I was interrogated for 3 hours. So if you have a drone camera I would leave it at home for this trip.

We met with our Jordan travel guide, Faisal, who was waiting for us at the port and we hopped on the bus for a 1-hour drive to Wadi Rum for the night.

We arrived quite late at the desert camp, so it was a quick dinner and then straight to bed.

After a cozy night in the desert camp tents, we were up at the crack of dawn for a sunrise jeep adventure through the Wadi Rum desert, which was one of the best things we did on the tour.

I have three words to describe Wadi Rum – Vast, Echoing, and Mars-like.

We spent two hours cruising around this other-worldly landscape, stopping at several spots to explore and take photos.

I was in complete awe the entire time, gazing up at the monolithic rocks that surrounded us.

I wish we had more time here in Wadi Rum but we had to head back to the desert camp for a big breakfast before making the 2-hour bus journey to Petra.

We arrived in Petra around midday, dropped our bags at the hotel and we headed straight to visit the City Of Mysteries!

I had been dying to see this place for years and today was a dream come true!

Anything you have ever read or seen in movies about Petra doesn’t compare to seeing it in real life! This unique city is the biggest draw for tourists visiting Jordan and it is easy to see why.

Petra is one of the 7 World Wonders and it is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site!

We spent the entire afternoon and evening getting lost inside the City Of Mysteries and admiring all the epic rock-carved temples, especially The Treasury!

It is hard to believe that these temples were carved from the top down over 2000 years ago… Sounds very mysterious to me!

The Lost City Of Petra by night is one of the best experiences I have ever had.

A candlelit path leads all the way down to The Treasury for a 2-hour light show and music performance from the local Jordanians!

DAY 13 & 14: AMMAN

It was sad to leave Petra but it was time to make our way to Amman for the last leg of our 15 Day Egypt and Jordan Tour.

On the way to Amman, we made a quick stop at the Kerak Castle, an old crusader castle built in the 12th century. We then continued to Amman, arriving at the hotel around 5 pm.

On our second day in Amman, we spent the morning checking out the downtown market and the citadel before making our way to the Dead Sea, which is a one-hour drive from the city.

The Dead Sea was really something else! It happens to be the lowest point on earth at 400m below sea level.

The high salinity levels in the Dead Sea make it very easy to float and in fact, it is nearly impossible to sink.

There is no life in the Dead Sea and it is one of the world’s saltiest bodies of water.

We spent a few hours bobbing around on the hypersaline beach, enjoying our last day on tour!

Wow great pictures! How did u get it like there’s no other people on the shot? Do you avoid crowds and go to tge sites earlier? Is this part of the itinerary?

I am also planning to go next year and will go with this tour also. This post helped me greatly. Thanks!

Much appreciated! It was quite busy at most places and had to time the shots well to get no people in them. But yes the tour does consider this and we went to a lot of the spots quite early in the morning! You will love this tour! 🙂

oh well, your trip inspired us to make it as our honeymoon destination this November! loooove all the photos cheers from Indonesia 🙂

Thats awesome! You are going to love it and enjoy your honeymoon!

Hey Jonny! Great read!! My friends and I are planning on this exact tour in October. Aside from the actual cost of the tour, do you know about how much money you spent on the rest of your time here? Like for meals and entrance tickets to the sights? I didn’t realize until today that the entrance tickets weren’t included in the price of the tour so I’m just trying to get a gauge on how much we need to budget. Thanks so much. Feel free to email me separately in case you don’t want to put it out publicly.

Hi Sadie, glad you enjoyed the article! I can’t remember exactly but off the top of my head, I would say between AUD $300-$500 on top of the tour price for extras not included. Hope this helps and enjoy your trip 🙂

your trip and your photo is amazing ,less with powerful short ,there are a lot of things to discover

do you mind if I will use some part of your trip for myself? I also need the contact of your guide for both

Glad you love the photos and blog! Yes all information is in the article including the tour company I went with. Just click on the links to check them out!

I loved reading your post. Your pictures are amazing and gives me a sense of being there. Egypt is high on my bucket list and I hope to visit in the near future. Keep up the great writing!

Hey Karen, stoked you loved the read! You must visit for sure, it was absolutely incredible! Enjoy.

  • Tour Extensions

Visit the great sun temples of Abu Simbel, built by Ramses II at the height of his New Kingdom reign. In one of the world's greatest cooperative preservation efforts, these temples were dismantled and moved in 1968 to save them from the flooding of the Aswan Dam. The Temple of Ramses II was constructed so that the sun's rays would illuminate four statues of Egyptian deities within the sanctuary on his birthday and on the anniversary of his coronation, October 20 and February 20. The temple is fronted by four colossal figures of Ramses II seated with the gods and attended by his Queen and daughters. The smaller temple is dedicated to Queen Nefertari, who appears as Hathor, the goddess of love, joy and fertility.

Dive into Egyptian culture before your tour even begins. Get your first taste with lunch at a local restaurant, featuring traditional Egyptian cuisine. After, move on to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization. This contemporary 5,300,000 square foot space sits in the historic neighborhood of Fustat. The museum first opened in 2017 and is home to a collection of 50,000 artifacts, tracing the Egyptian civilization from prehistoric times to today. On April 3, 2021 the world watched in awe as the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities relocated here the Royal Mummies during the stunning Pharaohs’ Golden Parade. The 22 mummies (18 kings and 4 queens) of Egypt’s most important pharaohs and queens were displayed on the streets of Cairo as they were transported from the Museum in Tahrir Square to their new home in the Museum of Egyptian Civilization. This large collection of royal mummies includes the likes of King Ramses II, the most famous pharaoh of the New Kingdom, and Queen Hatshepsut, who came to rule at a time when women did not become pharaohs. With the expert guidance of a local Egyptologist, enjoy a visit of this impressive museum – a perfect introduction to your exploration of Egypt. This optional tour is operated by a local representative and requires guests to have a pre-night hotel stay in Cairo. The optional is available from January 1, 2024 onwards.

My travel talk experience was great and memorable.

My travel talk experience was awesome and fantastic. Me and my husband was on their Morocco and Turkey tours in 2019, they operated their tours in a culturally fun manner and the tour guides were very nice and very approachable. It exceeded our expection, we love to come back with them in our future travel. Thank you travel talk you made our 2019 as one of our memorable year!

One of the best holidays I’ve had

We went on a tour of the Balkans and it was above our expectations. Bojan was the best tour leader gave us so much information about the places we were visiting but also a great laugh! The tour ran so smoothly and was the perfect way to see the area in a little amount of time. It was one of the best holidays I have been on, I loved every minute of it and I can’t wait to book another tour with travel talk. They are great value for money!

Just completed the exotic Morocco...

Just completed the exotic Morocco tour with our excellent guide Abdul! He was one of the best tour guides I have met, he brought so much energy and knowledge on the tour and could not imagine doing the tour without him. The tour itself was so diverse, seeing so many different landscapes. It has been one of the best trips I have done. Would highly recommend!

My partner and I thoroughly...

My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed our 9 Day Essential Turkey tour with Mustafa as our guide. His attentiveness to the group's needs was amazing, going above and beyond to ensure an stress-free experience. Mustafa provided valuable local insights, guiding us on the best areas to visit and helping us find good local deals. Overall, we found the tour to be excellent value for money, and we were particularly impressed with traveltalks accommodation choices—clean, spacious, and offering great meal options. Additionally, the inclusion of two drivers for our safety during long journeys added an extra layer of reassurance to our memorable trip. Thank you to Mustafa!

Fantastic tour, personable experiences

My first tour with Traveltalk to Jordan was fantastic. Everything was very well planned, the itinerary was timed to perfection and jam packed with amazing experiences. The tour guide Issa went above and beyond to make everyone happy and have the best experience possible, taking us to local restaurants and telling us the best things to eat. Our bus broke down on the way to the Dead Sea and he dealt with it really quickly, and a replacement bus arrived in less than an hour. He treated us all like his friend rather than just a job which make the tour even more special. The hotels were fab and had everything that we needed, all I great locations to local attractions. I booked another tour but had to cancel due to Covid and Traveltalk have placed my deposit aside ready to use on the next trip. I can’t wait to book again with them.

We did the 12 day...

We did the 12 day Turkey tour with the Gullet option, and loved it! The price was super reasonable, Travel Talk was always extremely responsive whenever I reached out. Most importantly, we visited an amazing array of impressive historical sites, saw the profound and varied natural beauty of Turkey and enjoyed incredible experiences like hot air ballooning and paragliding. Mustafa was the best tour guide we have ever had. His knowledge and organizational skills were top notch, he helped with everything (even with arranging laundry services) and was hilarious as well. The food was tasty, the hotels were good and the boat trip was fun and relaxing with beautiful scenery and a lot of swimming. The cabins on the boat weren’t air conditioned and were pretty hot at night, so some people slept on deck where there were plenty of places with cushions where you could stretch out and get a good nights rest. I highly recommend this tour!!

The 9-day Turkey Essentials tour...

The 9-day Turkey Essentials tour with Travel Talk Tours exceeded our expectations! The well-crafted itinerary showcased Turkey's best, complemented by excellent hotel choices. Mustafa, our guide, added depth with his rich knowledge, engaging storytelling and brilliant sense of humour. The seamless experience, from transportation, meals, accommodations, sightseeing and optional activities made this tour unforgettable. Highly recommended for those seeking a perfect blend of culture and comfort in Turkey.

Wow. 9 Day Essential Turkey...

Wow. 9 Day Essential Turkey Tour with Mustafa from Travel Talk Tours. Absolutely exceeded all expectations. I am in love with Turkey! The sights, the places, the hotels, the food, the bus and the antics of our amazing guide was seriously fantastic. This was an unforgettable experience and I am so glad I stumbled across Travel Talk and chose them. Mustafa you made me laugh and made us all feel so safe and welcome.. best guide I've ever had. ❤️

Mustafa is the key to a fantastic Essential Turkey tour

My partner and I did the Essential Turkey tour in November/December 2021. We had a fantastic time, and can both only recommend Travel Talk and this tour. Mustafa Kurt, our incredible guide, is really who sets this tour apart from any competition. He conducts the majority of Travel Talk's Essential Turkey, so you may get lucky if you book. Mustafa is an extremely qualified tour guide, with an extraordinary tourism CV, who wholly commits to ensuring that those on his tour have the very best Turkey experience possible. The man goes well above and beyond, without even thinking twice. He is a natural leader, whilst also being a friend. He was hilarious to have around us, bringing all the laughs and very much aiding in bringing the group together. His knowledge of Turkey is second to none, and he never lets this or his jokes get stale. The minibus that we used was better than expected - modern and comfy. We also had two drivers, adding to safety and ability to cover the long distances required. The hotels on the tour do vary, but are generally good. Travel Talk were responsive during booking, and flexible when it came to us having to delay due to Covid.

2 Week Egypt and Jordan Itinerary: What to See, Where to Stay, How to Get Around and More!

Looking to tour Egypt and Jordan in 14 days? It’s never been easier to explore these neighboring countries .

Jordan and Egypt are separated only by the Gulf of Aqaba, and for many people making the long journey over to the Middle East it often makes sense to visit multiple countries in the same trip.

For us, it was a no-brainer to combine the two – we love cultural travel, visiting UNESCO Heritage Sites and exploring archaeological ruins. Luckily, it is very easy to explore Egypt and Jordan’s top highlights in 2 weeks.

Collage of travel photos from Jordan and Egypt with text overlay

Egypt and Jordan are not only home to thousands of years of history and culture, the countries also offer visitors the opportunity to stand at the foot of the last remaining Wonders of the Ancient World as well as marvel at one of the new Wonders of the World .

The Monastery Ad Deir in Petra Jordan

Though these countries are only a hop and skip away from one another, Jordan and Egypt are fairly different in terms of how to get around, ease of independent travel, currency and visa policies.

If you’re planning a visit, read on for our 2 week Egypt and Jordan itinerary and essential travel tips to know before your trip.

Quick tips for your first trip to Egypt and Jordan

🌤️ Best time to visit Egypt and Jordan: The weather in Egypt and Jordan is the most pleasant from September to November or March to early May . Egypt and Jordan can be too warm in the summer months from June to August, and while Egypt experiences mild weather from November to February those months can be bitterly cold in Jordan. Some parts of Jordan even receive snow in the winter months!

☪️ Visiting Egypt and Jordan during Ramadan: Both Jordan and Egypt have majority Muslim populations, and Muslims fast from dawn to sunset during the holy month of Ramadan. The tourist landmarks are all open during this month though opening hours may vary slightly – otherwise, it’s pretty much business as usual. You should be aware that as a sign of respect, you should try to avoid eating and drinking (even water) in public, and many restaurants may cease serving alcohol.

🗣️ Language in Egypt and Jordan: Arabic is the most spoken language in both Jordan and Egypt, and most people (especially those in hospitality or food & beverage) speak English well. You shouldn’t run into any major problems with communication.

💲 Currency in Egypt and Jordan: The two countries use their own currencies – the Egyptian Pound (LE) in Egypt, and Jordanian Dinar (JOD) in Jordan. You can easily exchange money at Queen Alia International Airport in Amman, or at Cairo International Airport. Cash is king in both Jordan and Egypt though credit cards (mostly Visa and Mastercard) are accepted at international hotel chains. I recommend making sure that you have plenty of small denomination notes.

🛬 Egypt and Jordan visa policies: It is easy to purchase visas on arrival in both Jordan and Egypt. The visa on arrival in Jordan costs 40 JOD (approximately US$56) and the visa on arrival for Egypt costs US$25. If you are spending 1 week in Jordan then you should purchase the Jordan Pass . A Jordan Pass is a city pass that grants you entry into over 40 attractions across Jordan and costs between 70-80 JOD (US$99-113) depending on how many days you want to spend in Petra Archaeological Park . The great thing about buying a Jordan Pass is that you do not need to buy a separate visa on arrival – your entry into Jordan is covered by the Jordan Pass as long as you spend more than 3 nights in Jordan. There is no “city pass” equivalent in Egypt.

👚 Dress code in Egypt and Jordan: There aren’t specific dress codes at major tourist landmarks in Egypt and Jordan, although it is best to dress on the conservative side to be respectful. Female visitors are not required to wear scarves on their heads when walking around in cities; however, you should cover your shoulders and knees if you are visiting Coptic churches and places of worship in Egypt, and women will be required to wear an abaya when visiting certain mosques such as the King Abdullah I Mosque in Amman.

💧 Water in Egypt and Jordan: It is not safe to drink tap water in Egypt or Jordan. You should boil water before drinking or use a water purifier bottle.

🧳 What to bring to Egypt and Jordan: Plenty of sunscreen, a hat, refillable water bottle, wet wipes and/or hand sanitizer, a few packets of pocket tissue (for the public toilets), comfortable walking shoes or sandals. I used my Canon 6D for most photos, though these days many smartphones can take incredible travel photos as well. Don’t bother packing a drone if you’re a recreational drone user as Egypt and Jordan both have strict drone laws and many people end up having their UAVs confiscated at the airports.

Is it safe to visit Jordan and Egypt?

Police in Cairo Egypt

The vast majority of visits to Jordan and Egypt are trouble-free. However, there are certain things you should know before you go. Read on for more information about safety and security in Jordan and Egypt.

Though Jordan shares borders with Iraq and Syria, it has been relatively immune to the instability plaguing the region with the exception of a few isolated events. You can read more about safety and security in Jordan here , here and here . In general, tourism in Jordan is straightforward and the country has managed to make it easy for visitors to get around.

There is a high security presence in many hotels throughout Jordan, and tourist police patrol most major attractions and their surroundings. We traveled through Jordan independently with a rental car without a guide or organized tour, and highly recommend exploring Jordan this way.

First time to Jordan? Read this first for things you should know before you travel to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan!

Egypt experienced a military coup in 2013 and there has been a number of terrorist attacks by extremists across Egypt over the past three decades. Egyptian security forces as well as tourists have been targeted by terrorists, and attacks have taken place at tourist landmarks, religious sites, large public gatherings and hotels.

Egyptian Security at the Great Pyramids in Giza

In the past few years alone there has been two roadside bombs and a deadly car bomb attack in Cairo. There are security checks and road barricades at most major tourist sites and hotels, as well as security forces around the cities. I encourage you to stay abreast of news concerning Egypt ahead of your trip, and check Egypt travel advisories for the latest updates and developments. You can read more about safety and security in Egypt here , here and here .

While it is easy and very do-able to travel through Jordan independently, I highly recommend enlisting an experienced travel company in Egypt to help you plan and organize your tour itinerary.

First time to Egypt? Here’s what you need to know ahead of your trip.

There are tons of options when it comes to private Egypt tours and reputable tour companies – I understand that it can be overwhelming. We used Your Egypt Tours and would recommend them for their incredible Egyptologists, helpful customer service representatives and experienced drivers. You can read more reviews from other travelers here or get in touch with them at [email protected] .

2 Week Jordan and Egypt Itinerary

Inside Kom Ombo Temple in Egypt

There are several combined Egypt and Jordan tours out there, but I don’t believe that it is necessary to use a tour company for Jordan. If you do not want to self-drive in Jordan, it’s easy to organize a private driver or point-to-point transportation within Jordan – get in touch with your hotel for recommendations. I do not recommend self-driving in Egypt due to traffic and road conditions.

Road to Petra in Jordan

Driving in Jordan is very manageable – the drive between each of the stops on our 7 day Jordan itinerary took no longer than 3-4 hours, and the highways are in good condition (though there is the occasional pothole and hidden speed bump). Google Maps gave accurate directions and parking was free in most cities and hotels (with the exception of Petra, where we chose to park in a secured lot for a small fee).

We rented a small car in Jordan through Budget and paid around US$210 or 175 Euros for 7 days of rental. The car had a low excess/deductible of 350 JOD as Budget purchases basic insurance for their fleet, and we did not have to stop and pay any tolls in Jordan. Jordanian Dinars in Jerash

You can start this itinerary in either Jordan or Egypt – think of it as doing a loop around Jordan and a separate loop around Egypt. To travel from Jordan to Egypt you can take a short 1.5-hour flight between Amman and Cairo.

Our return Jordan to Egypt flights between Queen Alia International Airport in Amman (airport code: AMM) and Cairo International Airport (airport code: CAI) cost approximately US$250 or 210 Euros per person via Royal Jordanian Airlines (EgyptAir also flies direct flights between the two countries).

I do not recommend taking the ferry from Jordan to Egypt (or vice versa) unless you are traveling to Sharm El-Sheikh or Dahab in Egypt as the ferries travel between Nuweiba in Egypt and Aqaba in Jordan. This particular itinerary does not include traveling to Sharm El-Sheikh or Dahab and if you take the ferry you will need to take an additional flight to and from Cairo. Based on previous research the ferry timing can be iffy and often gets into Egypt in the middle of the night.

Day 1: Land in Amman

Amman Citadel in Jordan Temple of Hercules

Fly into Queen Alia International Airport in Amman and pick up your rental car. Kick off your 2 days in Amman by checking into your hotel before hopping into an Uber to visit Amman Citadel , one of the most incredible archaeological sites in the country.

Roman theatre and Amman landscape in Jordan

From there, stroll downhill for 10 minutes until you get to the dominating Roman Theatre dating back to the 2nd century. If you have enough time, visit the King Abdullah I Mosque , an iconic landmark in Amman that can host up to 10,000 people.

Amman skyline in Jordan

For dinner, head to Rainbow Street , a vibrant neighborhood featuring a number of restaurants. For snacks and a glass of wine with a view, head to Cantaloupe Gastropub. Click here for more Amman travel tips!

Where to stay in Amman: I recommend staying at the Amman Rotana , a luxury hotel on the outskirts of Amman’s city centre and a stone’s throw from the King Abdullah I Mosque. The hotel offers incredibly spacious rooms with a beautiful view of the city, free valet parking, a rooftop pool and a number of in-house restaurants. Make sure you get a room rate that includes breakfast. Click here to check availability at Amman Rotana . Looking for more options for where to stay in Amman? Based on extensive research we would also consider staying at these properties, or you can also check out some other highly rated hotels in Amman here . Nu Fifty Two : Perfect for independent travelers who value space and privacy, Nu Fifty Two offers 1-bedroom apartments with a living room and kitchenette just minutes away from Rainbow Street. The apartment complex also has free on-site parking so you can keep your rental car safe and sound. Click here to check availability and rates at Nu Fifty Two. Hilton Amman : If you want a hotel with all the facilities including 24-hour concierge and reception, another luxury Amman hotel option to consider is the Hilton Amman. The rooms are modern and classy, and the hotel offers a gym, pool, on-site restaurant and valet parking. Click here to check rates and availability at Hilton Amman.

Day 2: Explore Jerash

Temple of Zeus in Jerash Jordan

On day 2 in Jordan, venture out to explore the ancient ruins of Jerash , a Roman city dating back to the 3rd century B.C.

Nymphaeum in Jerash Jordan

Jerash is a 45-minute drive from Amman and is one of the best day trips for history lovers.

Jerash Oval Plaza and Temple of Zeus in Jordan

Set aside no less than 2-3 hours to visit the various landmarks within Jerash on foot – don’t miss the Oval Plaza , the Temple of Hercules , the Sanctuary of Artemis and the North and South Theatres.

Lions at Al Mawa Sanctuary in Jerash Jordan

After your visit to Jerash, hop back in the car to tour the Al Ma’Wa for Nature and Wildlife Sanctuary . The animals are rescued from poorly-run zoos in neighboring war-torn countries and the illegal animal trade in the region.

Rescued bear at Al Mawa Sanctuary in Jerash Jordan

Animals are returned to their native country if they can be returned to the wild and animals are desexed when they arrive so they do not breed into captivity. You can e-mail Al Ma’wa ahead of time to schedule a 1-hour tour of the sanctuary at 10 JOD per adult.

Day 3: Drive to Petra via Shobak and Um ar-Rasas

Umm ar-Rasas in Jordan

Head south towards Wadi Musa (the closest town to Petra) from Amman. The drive will take just over 3 hours but there are 2 quick pit stops that you should make on your way, the first being Um ar-Rasas (or Um er-Rasas) , a UNESCO World Heritage Site and archaeological site about an hour away from Amman.

Umm ar-Rasas in Jordan

This site began as a Roman military camp and grew to become a town from the 5th century; today, it features ruins of churches and military camp – don’t miss the mosaic floor of the Church of Saint Stephen .

Shobak Castle in Jordan

Another must-visit attraction on your way to Petra is the Shobak Castle , a towering Crusader fortress perched on top of a mountain.

Shobak Castle in Jordan

Including these 2 quick detours, you should be able to get from Amman to Petra in less than 4, 4.5 hours.

Petra By Night in Jordan

Once you’ve arrived in Wadi Musa, check into your hotel (I recommend the Petra Marriott ) and either settle in for the night, or if you’ve timed your trip properly you can attend “ Petra By Night ”, an evening show hosted in front of The Treasury 3 times a week on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday; it is an incredible way to see part of the rock city and starts with a candlelit walk along the entire Siq to the Treasury!

Where to stay in Wadi Musa: We loved our stay at the Petra Marriott , a 5-minute drive away from the Petra Visitor Centre. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, and some even offer a stunning view across the valley. The sunset view from the pool can’t be beat, so grab a seat (and a bottle of beer) in the late afternoon. Click here to see current rates and availability at Petra Marriott . Looking for more options for where to stay in Petra? Based on extensive research we would also consider staying at these properties, or you can also check out some other highly rated hotels in Wadi Musa here. Mövenpick Resort Petra : If you prefer to stay within walking distance of the Petra entrance then you really can’t get closer than this. The 5-star Mövenpick Petra is directly across the street from the Petra Visitor Centre, and boasts several on-site restaurants and facilities. Reviewers love the rooftop restaurant and helpful staff. Click here to check rates and availability at Mövenpick Resort Petra. H Luxury Hotel : A brand new luxury hotel in Petra, H Luxury offers modern and comfortable rooms about 5-minutes away on foot from the Petra Visitor Centre. There is a rooftop terrace and indo or pool, and previous guests rave about the excellent service and value-for-money. Click here to check rates and availability at H Luxury Hotel.

Day 4: Explore Petra Archaeological Park

The Royal Tombs in Petra Jordan

Get an early start and head to Petra Archaeological Park first thing in the morning when it opens.

800 steps to The Monastery in Petra Jordan

Petra Archaeological Park covers an area of 264,000 square meters…it would take weeks to explore the entirety of the complex.

The Treasury in Petra Jordan

If you only have 1 day in Petra then don’t skip the Siq , the Treasury and the Royal Tombs .

The Monastery with bougainvillea in foreground Petra Jordan

If you’re feeling ambitious you can trek 800 steps over to the Monastery or Ad Deir , one of the largest monuments in Petra. You can click here to read more about visiting Petra.

Day 5: Visit Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum Desert in Jordan

On day 5 in Jordan, head south for 1 hour towards the vast open desert of Wadi Rum . The 74,000 hectare protected area was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011 and features narrow gorges, sandstone arches, towering cliffs, rock carvings and previous archaeological remains.

Desert safari in Wadi Rum in Jordan

Its unique landscape has been used as a backdrop in a number of Hollywood hits including The Martian, Aladdin and Lawrence of Arabia.

Wadi Rum desert tour in Jordan

Make sure you go on a jeep safari in the desert, and ask your guide if you can stay for the sunset!

Martian Dome in Wadi Rum Jordan

Where to stay in Wadi Rum: We stayed in a “Martian Dome” at Sun City Camp , one of the first luxury camps in Wadi Rum. The air-conditioned rooms are spacious with a transparent panel at the front for stargazing, and each of the tents have en-suite bathrooms. Glamping in the desert comes with a hefty price tag, and you might not feel that the experience is worth the (fairly significant) nightly rate – ultimately, this is for you to decide! Read more about what I thought of glamping in Wadi Rum. The camp also offers traditional Bedouin tents if you are after a more “authentic” desert experience. You can check current rates and read more reviews here . Looking for more options for where to stay in Wadi Rum? Based on extensive research we would also consider staying at these properties that offer bubble tents, or explore the other options for glamping in Wadi Rum . W Camp : The Superior King Room bubble tents in Wadi Rum are highly rated for cleanliness, water pressure and the hospitality and warmth of the staff. Previous guests also rave about the desert tours that W Camp organized for them. Check rates and availability at W Camp here . Zeina Desert Lodge : Sold as “Luxurious mountains panoramic view dome”, the bubble tents at this Wadi Rum camp are extremely spacious – but just be aware – some previous guests say that the view from the tents are not all equal! Some domes offer a better view of the desert so be sure to note that in your booking request. Check rates and availability at Zeina Desert Lodge .

Day 6: Swim in Aqaba

Snorkelling in Aqaba Jordan

Aqaba is a port city in the south, and a popular resort destination for travellers visiting Jordan. Aqaba is approximately 1 hour away from Wadi Rum by car. The coast is teeming with vibrant marine life in the Red Sea and is one of the best diving and snorkeling destinations in the world.

Beach in Aqaba Jordan

Spend the day soaking up the sunshine and going for a dip!

Where to stay in Aqaba: We loved our stay at Hyatt Regency Aqaba Ayla Resort in Aqaba – everything is brand new, stylish, and the facilities and hospitality are top notch. You can make use of the hotel’s man-made private beach, multiple pools and fitness centre. Click here to check current rates at the Hyatt Regency Aqaba . Looking for more options for where to stay in Aqaba? Based on extensive research we would also consider staying at these highly-rated properties, or head on over here for more hotel options in Aqaba ! Kempinski Aqaba : I love the look of the bright, beachy rooms at this luxury beachfront resort in Aqaba. It has glowing reviews and previous guests rave about the wonderful staff and hospitality. It has all the facilities you would expect from a 5-star property including a 24-hour gym and luxury spa – families love the on-site kids club. Many rooms offer private balconies overlooking the Red Sea! Check rates and availability at Kempinski Aqaba . Mövenpick Resort & Spa Tala Bay Aqaba : The rooms are spacious but basic at this Movenpick Resort in Aqaba, but what really stands out are the multiple pools on offer – one even has a huge water slide. Guests also like the easy access to snorkeling in front of the resort. Click here to check rates and availability at Mövenpick Resort & Spa Tala Bay Aqaba .

Day 7: Float in the Dead Sea

Floating in the Dead Sea in Jordan

On your last full day in Jordan, drive northbound from Aqaba to the Dead Sea region in just over 3 hours. Though Aqaba has an international airport and you could technically hop straight on a plane to go from Aqaba to Cairo (via Amman), the flight prices are pretty extortionate for this route and rental car companies also charge a hefty one-way fee.

For this reason, we chose to drive back towards Amman and the Dead Sea so that we could drop the car off at the pick-up location.

Dead Sea warning sign in Jordan

The Dead Sea is located only about 50 minutes away from Amman. It is a salt lake that sits over 400 metres below sea level, and the mineral-rich water allows you to float weightlessly – it’s pretty much impossible to sink!

Many hotels will also offer mud from the Dead Sea that you can rub onto your body – the mud is known for being extremely soothing and makes your skin silky smooth.

Where to stay at the Dead Sea: We stayed at the Hilton Dead Sea Resort for 1 night, though it is also possible to stay in Amman and do a day trip to the Dead Sea instead. There aren’t a ton of hotel options in this area, and the Hilton was one of the higher-rated properties with private access to the Dead Sea, a swim-up bar and a handful of dining facilities. The location can’t be beat, but we experienced some inconsistency in the staff service at the hotel. Some other guests echoed the experience, but others found the staff to be helpful – I guess it’s all down to the luck of the draw. They are also extremely strict and forbid guests from bringing any food into the property. You can click here to check out other guest reviews and current rates . As an alternative option, we would also seriously consider staying at Dead Sea Marriott Resort & Spa just up the road. The rooms are spacious and clean, and previous guests love having access to multiple swimming pools. The resort is also now a smoke-free property. Check rates and availability at Dead Sea Marriott Resort & Spa , or head on over here for more options in the Dead Sea region .

Day 8: Travel to Cair o

View of the pyramids from Marriott Mena House restaurant in Cairo Egypt

There are multiple direct flights between Cairo and Amman every day, and we hopped on an afternoon flight with Royal Jordanian Airlines from Queen Alia International Airport to Cairo – the flight time is just under 90 minutes and the one-way direct flight in economy class cost us approximately US$250 or 240 Euros. The drive from the Dead Sea region to the airport should only take about 50 minutes to an hour.

Streets of Cairo in Egypt

I recommend budgeting an extra 20-30 minutes to return your rental car – we left the hotel a little late and were cutting things close at the airport. Thankfully, the guys at Budget car rentals were understanding and let us jump the queue to quickly sign off on the remaining paperwork and run to the check-in counter.

The Pyramids of Giza in Cairo Egypt

We landed in Cairo in the evening and were met by a representative from Your Egypt Tours, the luxury tour company we used for our 1 week in Egypt . They organized all land transport by private van, booked our Nile cruise and provided experienced Egyptologist guides.

Citadel of Salah el Din in Cairo Egypt

Using a tour agency in Egypt is the easiest way to explore the country. Begin your Egypt trip by exploring some of the key highlights and landmarks in Cairo , the capital city.

Sphinx of Memphis in Cairo Egypt

On your first day in Cairo head to Giza to see the Great Pyramids and Sphinx , visit the burial chamber of King Teti and earliest pyramids in Sakkara (or Saqqara) , stop at Memphis (the first ancient capital of Egypt) and visit a Papyrus Museum .

Where to stay in Cairo: Check yourself into the Marriott Mena House for a view of the pyramids and exceptional hospitality. The hotel used to be the site of the old palace and is located right next to the entrance to the great pyramids of Giza. Check out current rates and availability at Marriott Mena House . Looking for more options for where to stay in Cairo? Based on extensive research we would also consider staying at these highly-rated properties, or click here to check out other highly-rated accommodation in Cairo! Kemet Boutique Hotel : This boutique hotel in Cairo offers a sweeping pyramid view from its rooftop restaurant, and is located a quick 10-15 minute walk away from the Giza pyramids. Previous guests consistently rave about the helpful staff who can organize any transportation or tours. The rooms are simple and classy, with some offering a private balcony as well. Check out rates and availability at Kemet Boutique Hotel . La Perle Pyramids : This stunning, modern 1-bedroom apartment in Cairo is best suited to independent, self-sufficient travelers visiting Egypt. Reviewers love the helpful and responsive host, and have nothing but great things to say about the apartment design, layout and cleanliness – not to mention the pyramid views. Check out rates and availability at La Perle Pyramids .

Day 9: Tour Old Cairo

Khan el Khalili Bazaar in Cairo Egypt

On your second day in Cairo, head to Cairo Citadel and visit the Mohamed Ali Alabaster Mosque , wander through the streets of the Khan el Khalili Bazaar and check out some important Coptic churches and landmarks including The Hanging Church .

Yuya and Thuya mummies in Egyptian Museum in Cairo Egypt

During the warmest part of the day when the sun is out in full force, hide in the shade and visit the Egyptian Museum .

Egyptian Museum in Cairo Egypt

The incredible museum houses over 120,000 Egyptian artifacts including the treasures of the tomb of King Tutankhamun and a room full of mummified pharaohs. Read this article for more ideas on how to spend 2 days in Cairo.

Day 10: Head to Aswan

Philae Temple in Egypt

Get up bright and early (perhaps a little too early) for the dawn flight from Cairo to Aswan. The short 90-minute flight takes you to Aswan in southern Egypt, a city that has historically been strategically important as well as a commercial gateway.

Aswan is home to the High Dam , a structure that not only protects the country from annual floods but also provides irrigation water and electricity for the whole of Egypt.

Visiting the Philae Temple in Egypt

It is also the current site of the Philae Temple of Isis , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, only reachable by small water taxi boat.

Columns with waterline at the Philae Temple in Egypt

Once submerged below water (you can still see the water line marks on some of the columns), the temple was painstakingly dismantled piece by piece and later reassembled.

Sailing on a Nile Cruise in Egypt

We boarded our Nile cruise in Aswan and spent the early evening on its top deck and getting some rest in preparation for the next day of sailing and sightseeing.

Important: Aswan is also where you can board your Nile cruise. For many Nile cruise ships, you need to board either on a Monday or Friday – many ships embark on their journey from Aswan on Mondays, or from Luxor on Fridays. For this reason, you will need to time the rest of your trip accordingly! Looking for more Egypt Nile cruise options? We traveled aboard the M/S Amwaj Living Stone Nile Cruise, which Your Egypt Tours booked on our behalf. Here are some other Nile cruise operators you might want to consider based on positive reviews from past guests. M/Y Alexander The Great Nile Cruise : For a mid-budget option consider this Nile cruise ship – the décor and furnishing is similar to the one we went on, and there is a small pool on board for a post-sightseeing dip. The ship has its own Egyptologists to take guests to the major landmarks, and reviewers say that the staff are very hospitable and helpful. The M/Y Alexander The Great sets sail from Luxor on Monday and Aswan on Friday. Click here to check rates and availability aboard M/Y Alexander The Great Nile Cruise . Historia The Boutique Hotel Nile Cruise : For a high-end Nile cruise consider this luxury ship. The rooms and common areas are modern and tastefully designed, and past guests love the cocktail bar on board. Reviewers say that the food is delicious and the staff go above and beyond to make guests feel at home. Historia The Boutique Hotel Nile Cruise sets sail from Luxor on Monday and Aswan on Friday. Click here to check rates and availability aboard Historia The Boutique Hotel Nile Cruise .

Day 11: Sail on the River Nile to see Kom Ombo and Edfu

Granite falcon statue in Edfu Egypt

After our first night aboard the Nile cruise, we sailed northbound nearly 50 kilometres and docked in Kom Ombo in the early morning to visit Kom Ombo Temple .

Kom Ombo Temple in Egypt

The temple was dedicated to Sobek, the crocodile-headed Egyptian god, who was associated with fertility as well as protection from the Nile floods.

Temple of Horus in Edfu in Egypt

After the morning excursion, we hopped back on board and sailed another 60 kilometres towards Edfu to explore Edfu’s Temple of Horus .

Woman standing in the Temple of Horus in Edfu in Egypt

This was probably one of the top highlights for me during our time in Egypt – the temple features striking hypostyle columns, intricately decorated outer walls and a stunning black granite statue of a falcon at its main entrance.

Temple of Horus in Edfu in Egypt

Following the temple visits, we set sail towards Luxor and spent the next 3-4 hours leisurely cruising up the river Nile.

Nile cruise in Egypt sitting on top deck

Make sure you find out what time the ship will approach the Esna Lock , a lock that allows ships to pass from the higher level of water to a lower one, and make your way to the top deck to watch the lock in action!

Day 12: Visit Luxor

Luxor Temple entrance in Luxor Egypt

Luxor is also known as the “City of Palaces” and served as an important religious and political epicenter in ancient Egypt.

Egyptian gods paintings in the Valley of the Kings in Luxor Egypt

Today, the open-air museum spans the east and west banks of the river Nile and is home to precious remnants from the golden age of pharaohs and queens.

Temple of Hatshepsut in Luxor Egyp

There is plenty to see and do in Luxor, so conserve your energy and plan your sightseeing strategically as the city is a few degrees warmer than Cairo and there is minimal shade at the various landmarks.

Tomb of Ramses V and VI in the Valley of the Kings Luxor Egypt

I recommend spending your first day in Luxor by exploring the West Bank where you’ll find most of the monuments and tombs for the dead.

Valley of the Kings in Luxor Egypt

These include the Colossi of Memnon , the magnificent Valley of the Kings (ask your guide which tombs to visit as they vary in terms of quality of preservation), and Hatshepsut Temple at Deir el-Bahari .

Day 13: Explore more of Luxor and return to Cairo

Columns in the Karnak Temple Complex in Luxor Egypt

On day 2, wander around Luxor’s East Bank and visit the Karnak Temple complex, Luxor Temple and the Avenue of the Sphinxes .

Avenue of Sphinxes in Luxor Egypt

The temples are some of the best preserved in the country and feature striking hypostyle columns, colossal statues of pharaohs and unique statues of sphinxes (some of which are even ram-headed!). Read more about what to see and do in Luxor by clicking here!

Columns in the Karnak Temple Complex in Luxor Egypt

When we visited Egypt in 2019, you could either take a late afternoon flight from Luxor to Cairo at approximately 6 PM, or hop on an early morning flight at midnight, 6 AM or 7 AM.

Luxor Temple in Luxor Egypt

We opted for the evening flight back to Cairo and spent the night at the Le Meridien at Cairo Airport for an overnight layover. Alternatively, you might want to stay overnight in Luxor and fly back to Cairo on day 14 of this 2 week itinerary to catch your flight out of Egypt.

Day 14: Depart Egypt

Cairo skyline in Egypt

On your final day in Egypt, fly out of Cairo International Airport or hit up some additional landmarks that you might have missed the first time around!

Either way, Your Egypt Tours will organize airport pick up and drop off via private chauffeured car.

3 weeks in Egypt and Jordan

West Theatre of Umm Qais (Umm Qays)-- is a town in northern Jordan near the site of the ancient town of Gadara. Umm Qais is one of Jordan's most unique Greco Roman Decapolis sites

Have more time and want to explore more of Jordan and Egypt? You might want to consider spending 10 days in Jordan and visiting the Dana Biosphere Reserve , Wadi Mujib and Umm Qays , or extending your time in Petra by a night or two.

Abu Simbel in Egypt

You can also spend 10 days in Egypt by adding on Abu Simbel and Alexandria to your Egypt itinerary. Alternatively, avid divers should head to Hurghada or Sharm el Sheikh to explore the rich underwater ecosystem in the Red Sea.

Hi, thank you so much for the detailed itinerary of Egypt & Jordan. My husband & I are inspired to go now. It helped a lot with our planning for next year trip hopefully. It will be our dream trip!

Hi Leanne, thanks so much for taking the time to read this guide! I hope you have a wonderful trip. Wishing you both safe travels!

This is all so useful and detailed! Will pretty much be following this exactly on our trip to Egypt and Jordan. I saw the estimated cost for the Egypt trip, but I didn’t see any costs for Jordan. Can you link me to whichever post that is in? Thanks!

Hi Tiffany, very happy to hear that you found this helpful. Here is the Jordan guide but I don’t go into the costing details as much because we traveled around independently: https://www.yogawinetravel.com/7-day-jordan-itinerary/

Our costs were therefore pretty much limited to the car hire (about US$210 for a week), hotels and the Jordan Pass. Food/drink are very reasonably priced in Jordan, so how much your trip costs will largely depend on the type of hotels you stay at. Just to give you an idea we paid approximately US$150-200 per night in 4-5* hotels but it’s of course entirely possible to spend less on accommodation.

You’ve organized your site very well. I also love your practical advices! Thanks a lot!

Egypt/Jordan Travel Guide: 10 Day Itinerary

01.09.22 International , Travel 15

travel talk egypt and jordan

A bucket list trip years in the making! A few years ago my mom and I decided to plan a total bucket list trip: Egypt and Jordan! A world pandemic got in our way but this Christmas we finally made it happen. We packed our bags and headed to the Middle East.

This trip look a LOT of planning. First up, being two female travelers, safety was our number one concern. If you have been reading my blog for awhile, you know that my mom Wendy is a total rockstar when planning trips! Our last trip to Croatia was AMAZING and we planned it completely ourselves.

This trip was a little different however. We ended up opting to use a tour group to help plan this trip. Except we had strict rules. We wanted everything to be private (hello corona!), all of our guides to be vaxxed, and we wanted to plan the itinerary. We ended up planning our trip with Kensington Tours . Morgan was our travel agent and she was a joy to work with. She made all of our crazy requests happen and made sure we had a seamless time overseas!

Now I will say that this trip did cost us a pretty penny. Normally we would not spend this much on a trip and if we planned it ourselves like our other trips it would have been more in our travel budget. However, with the location, language barrier, and pandemic we thought that it would be worth it. Let me tell you it was! We had someone meeting us right off the airplane, take us through customs, private drivers, and our guides were AMAZING! Like I said we felt nothing but safe.

I wanted to give a full trip itinerary, but I also have a few other blog posts about just Egypt, Jordan, etc.

Whether you’re concerned about the country’s safety or you just haven’t thought much about the Middle East, this guide will put it on the map for you and show you just how magical a trip to Egypt can truly be.

Egypt at a glance | What to expect

Egypt is one of the most mysterious destinations on the planet, and it had been on my bucket list for years! Between the Nile, the Red Sea, Alexandria, Cairo, and pyramids that date back to 2500 BC, there’s so much history and culture to experience.

Egypt is home to one of the world’s oldest civilizations, and thus holds such great history and ancient stories to discover. It is a land of pharaohs, pyramids, sphinxes, mummies, and sacred traditions.

I read this article many times to help prepare us for our trip!

WEATHER  | As you may know, Egypt is a desert so it can get quite toasty. You’ll likely want to plan your trip around the weather, meaning the best time to visit is from October to April. When we went in December the weather ranged from low 70’s during the day to 50’s at night. It was very pleasant.

FOOD AND DRINK  | Egyptian cuisine is very typical Middle Eastern cuisine. Lots of hummus, rice, grilled meats, and Middle Eastern spices. Honestly the food wasn’t my favorite, but we tried everything! Remember you cannot drink the tap water in Egypt due to bacteria. We also stayed away from vegetables and fruit that could not be peeled. We heard horror stories of people getting ill so we steered clear and thankfully neither of us got sick! *I will not be sharing restaurant recommendations because they were all included with our tour package.

CURRENCY  | The official currency of Egypt is the Egyptian Pound (EGP). It is about 16 USD to 1 EGP.

LANGUAGE  | There are several languages spoken in Egypt, but the primary language is Egyptian Arabic, however most people speak English as well. We had no language barrier issues.

SAFETY |  After the revolution of 2011, tourism drastically dropped in Egypt. However, In recent years, the political situation in Egypt has stabilized, bringing higher tourism rates. Overall, it is a safe country, but there are a few things to keep in mind. If visiting the pyramids or other large tourist attractions, play it safe by taking a tour or hiring a private guide as I did.

CUSTOMS | 80% of Egypt is Muslim, so it is important to be respectful of their religion/culture. Women must be careful to cover themselves appropriately (knees/shoulders/no cleavage) as modest clothing is the norm. If you are visiting religious sights be sure to pack a scarf to cover your head as well.

Day 1: Cairo

travel talk egypt and jordan

We woke up to the most amazing view of the Pyramids in our room at the Marriott Mena House Hotel . We enjoyed a beautiful breakfast poolside with the pyramids in the background. It was truly an unbelievable way to start our vacation.

First things first was to cross off a major item on the bucket list: the Great Pyramids of Giza. They are the most iconic image when thinking of Egypt. We met our AMAZING guide Hana (she was with us our whole time in Cairo and I have so many good things to say about her!). We marveled at the breathtaking scenery of the only surviving site of the original Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It was a total pinch me moment!

A camel ride is a must for all first-time Egypt travelers. We opted for the shorter 15 minute camel ride and let me tell you I will probably never ride a camel again. 15 minutes was plenty! Mel Gibson (my camel) didn’t drop me, but they are SO TALL it was kind of terrifying. Also the fact that my camel handler was a 8 year old kid. The views were worth it, and it all didn’t feel real!

A quick story that I just needed to share when we were visiting the Sphinx. Egyptian people love American tourists. They don’t see them often so they are super excited when they see you. Throw in my blonde hair and blue eyes, and I stick out. Our car pulled up to drop us off, and there was a group of 20 middle school girls. As soon as the driver opened the door I felt like it was the paparazzi. They were screaming and waving and taking pictures and trying to take selfies with me. I can’t even explain how it felt. Then some lady handed me her baby and walked away. It was so surreal I can even put into words. The whole trip people looked, waved, took pictures of us. It was actually funny, and I didn’t hate all of the attention!

We wanted to visit a perfumery because Egypt produces many of the scents used my international perfumeries. The nicest man show us his store, explain the different scents, oils and what each are used for. We got to sample lots and ended up coming up with pure Aragon oil for hair and body, Watercrest (arugula) oil for healthy, shiny, and fast growing hair, Sandalwood oil for warming, hydrating, and anti-inflammatory healing, and I left with one bottle of perfume called “Desert Secret” and it is supposed to lure all the men to me, so hopefully it works! LOL

Next up we went to buy our cartouche. A cartouche is an over pendant with a line of vertical text spelling out your name in Egyptian. It was such a special thing to bring home. I only did Britt, but here is what mine means:

B – leg – a big traveler

R – mouth – likes to talk, or has a loud voice

I – feather – is intelligent

T- loaf of bread – likes to eat

I will say mine was SPOT on! Crazy to think that!

To end our first very busy day in Cairo we visited the vibrant Khan Khalili Bazaar. A maze of shops lined with souvenirs and antiques, restaurants and coffee shops, workshops, mosques, and food vendors. The sights and sounds are a true sensory overload.

The juxtaposition of everything in Cairo can be overwhelming. Try to imagine 10 lanes of traffic, with cars, pick up trucks with 10 people loaded in the back, scooters, buses, tuktuks, donkeys, and people crossing the street all at once. People communicate with their horns, it was a very bizarre situation, one I will never forget.

Day 2: Cairo To Luxor

travel talk egypt and jordan

We boarded a flight to Luxor very early in the morning. It is only about an hour flight, so we thought it was the easiest way to get to different parts of the country.

We were picked up by our guide (Mad-hat, but I always called him Mad Hatter), and headed to Karnak Temple. Luxor is a whole lot quieter than Cairo. Luxor is home to the temples and tombs of the Pharaohs and their queens. There are so many amazing things to see and experience in Luxor. Definitely do not skip out on this city!

Over the centuries many pharaohs left their mark on this fascinating and massive temple of Karnak. You enter by strolling down an avenue of sphinxes and immerse yourself back into ancient Egyptian time. Feel in awe of the massive sandstone columns that line the temple. We listened to Mad Hatter’s stories of this time period.

We checked into our hotel, Sofitel Old Winter Palace . The history of this old hotel is just incredible. Agatha Christie wrote her book Death On The Nile while staying at this hotel. Also many presidents like Jimmy Carter stayed here as well.

That evening we explored another temple, Luxor Temple and learned more history about the ancient Egyptian times. We then took a horse and carriage ride through the streets of Luxor, and let me tell you it was an unforgettable experience. The driver wanted me to sit up with him and lead the horse, so I hopped up and off we went. I swear it was like a parade. People were running towards us, waving, screaming, taking pictures, just wanting to get a look at us. It was hysterical!

Day 3: Luxor

travel talk egypt and jordan

We started today extremely early (like 4:30AM pick up time), to get a bird’s eye view of Luxor. Going on a sunrise hot air balloon ride was a trip highlight for me. It was spectacular! We heard some horror stories of people on the balloon ride, but our take off and landing was so smooth!

After our balloon ride we visited the first female pharaoh of Egypt’s temple: Queen Hatshepsut. She was a total badass. She would depict herself with a fake beard so she would fit in with the male pharaohs. Her temple was my favorite one we visited.

We enjoyed the most lovely lunch overlooking a farmer’s land with his camels and donkeys grazing in the field. It was so lush with all of the palm trees!

Next we visited the Valley of the Kings to explore the ancient tombs and visit a familiar face. The original colors on some of these tombs were unbelievable. These tombs were constructed for the kings and powerful nobles. They were filled with all of their treasures and their mummies. Imagine the feeling the people had when they discovered these tombs! The treasures and mummies are housed at the Egyptian museum now. The only mummy left is the one of King Tut! Definitely pay him a visit! The tombs are very hot, so if you are visiting during the summer please be aware!

Day 4: Luxor To Cairo

travel talk egypt and jordan

Since we added a second league of Jordan to the trip, we went back to Cairo before headed over. Today was our religious day. We learned all about the presence of Islam, Judaism, and Christianity in Egypt. All 3 religions are practiced and people are very open to whichever religion you practice.

I was mostly curious about the muslim religion because it was the newest for me. I honestly felt ignorant and this trip totally changed my perspective of this religion. Muslims and the Middle East in general do not have a good stereotype (especially after 9/11). Not going to lie I was a little uncomfortable in the beginning seeing women covered head to toe with only their eyes showing, or hearing people speak Arabic. But after learning about the religion and the customs and the why of things it completely turned my perspective around. It was very eye-opening and humbling.

We checked into the Ritz-Carlton of Cairo and enjoyed a massage to end our day.

Day 5: Cairo

Today was all about the museums. We joined Hana on a private tour of the Egyptian Museum . Here we saw all of the treasures found in the tombs. There is a new Egyptian Museum opening up this year that is supposed to be AMAZING, so unfortunately a lot of the artifacts have already moved over there, but it was still enough to see.

We also stopped at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization . This is known for their Royal Mummy Hall , where some of the world’s most powerful people are now resting. There are about 20 mummies you can see. It was surreal to see the teeth, hair, eyes still intact from all of those years ago!

Since today was New Year’s Eve we wanted to be sure to celebrate. We took part in a Nile River cruise aboard the “ Nile Maxim “. The Nile river is the world’s longest waterway, and where Moses was found floating in a basket. It was extremely touristy, but still a good time! We enjoyed entertainment from the Whirling Dervish as well as a Belly Dancer.

We had an early pick up to head to our next destination of Jordan!

Jordan at a glance | What to expect

For a relatively small country, Jordan has a lot to offer. A trip to Jordan is not complete without a visit to the most famous site, Petra, a trip to the Dead Sea, and exploring the Wadi Rum Desert.

WEATHER  | March to May (spring) is the best time to travel to Jordan if you’re an avid hiker. The country’s desert landscape transforms into a blanket of wildflowers, and the forests are lush and green. It was chillier then we would have hoped. It was low to mid 60’s during the days and dropped down into the low 50’s at night.

FOOD AND DRINK  | Jordanian cuisine is very typical Middle Eastern cuisine and Egypt.

CURRENCY  | The official currency of Egypt isThe currency in Jordan is the Jordanian Dinar. It is 1 Dinar to 1.50 USD. Jordan is a very very wealthy country – thanks to oil.

LANGUAGE  | The official language in Jordan is Arabic.

SAFETY |   It’s a very safe destination overall, however, it can be a little hard to travel solo or as a couple because its highlights are spread out through the country and you’ll need to hire a driver or book a tour. The roads can be quite dangerous—but that’s the main safety issue.

CUSTOMS | Jordan is an Islam country so it is important to be respectful of their religion/culture. Women must be careful to cover themselves appropriately (knees/shoulders/no cleavage) as modest clothing is the norm. If you are visiting religious sights be sure to pack a scarf to cover your head as well. Women here were covered even more than in Egypt. Also the men wore traditional islam dress as well.

Day 6: The Dead Sea

travel talk egypt and jordan

Amman, Jordan is only an hour and a half plane ride from Egypt. We hopped off our plane and headed straight to the Dead Sea. The Dead Sea is the lowest place on planet Earth at 1,412 feet below sea level. The salt content is so high that you float no matter what. Another bucket list item to cross off!

We spent the day at the Zara spa at the Movenpick resort and enjoyed a spa treatment called 1,001 Arabic nights. We wanted to try something different, and boy were we in for a treat. They stripped us down naked, and put mom and I in a steam room. They then began a full body scrub to exfoliate, followed by two full body Dead Sea mud masks. To end the treatment they dumped buckets of ice cold water on us. It wasn’t the most relaxing experience, but one I will remember forever!

We also stopped at the place where Jesus was baptized. I never realized how many biblical events occurred in Jordan. Someone who is pretty religious it was really special to see these sites in real life!

Day 7: Petra

travel talk egypt and jordan

Petra is the treasure of the ancient world, and the rock-cared rose city is full of mysterious charm. Admired for its refined culture massive architecture this remarkable city of grand buildings carved into massive cliffs evokes wonder. Walking the grounds of Petra were surreal. It was so massive! Fun fact: Indiana Jones was filmed here, so you can dance around singing the theme song.

I paid a local Jordanian $5 Dinars to take me up to one of the special vantage points to get a few pictures. It was quite the dangerous hike, but the view was so worth it!

If you are up for an extra adventure. Climb up 816 steps to the Monastery. It is the largest tomb facade in Petra. It was quite the hike, and everyone was out of breath on the way up. You can opt for a donkey ride up, but it seemed quite dangerous. I trusted my own two feet more! But the views were worth it!

After we were done exploring (give yourself about 6-8 hours to explore) we headed to the Wadi Rum Desert to our Bubble Hotel.

One of the coolest experiences in the Wadi Rum desert is to stay in a Bubble Hotel. We stayed at the Bubble Luxotel and it was probably the coolest hotel I have ever stayed at. Each room consists of three bubbles, that offer the most amazing views. Sleeping under the stars was such an amazing experience. Each bubble has an outdoor hot tub that you can relax in while stargazing. This is the definition of glamping!

Day 8: Wadi Rum

travel talk egypt and jordan

The Wadi Rum Desert is something remarkable. A vast open space, virtually untouched by humanity. Many movies were filmed here including: Star Wars, Martian, and Aladdin. The weather and wind has carved the imposing, towering skyscrapers. The tranquility of the desert was something I was not expecting. It was so quiet and peaceful.

We headed on a jeep ride through the moonscape of Wadi Rum. We discovered valleys and gorges that were just stunning. This area is home to the Bedouin people. “Bedu” in Arabic means “desert dwellers”. They are the nomadic people who live in the Wadi Rum. We were so lucky that they opened up their community to show us their lifestyle and culture. They had such warm hospitality and it was such a unique experience to sit on their floor on their rugs and share tea.

Mr. Friday was our jeep tour guide, and he was a hoot. He was a little comedian cracking jokes and really made our ride unforgettable. One thing that was super special was that he took us to his sister’s house for lunch. It was very special and humbling. It was a meal that I will never forget, and let me tell you it was delicious!

Day 9: Amman

travel talk egypt and jordan

We started the day with a city tour of Amman. Amman is the capital of Jordan which is a fascinating city of contracts – a unique blend of old and new. We visited all of the important sites of Amman including the Roman Theater and Nymphaeum that reflect the historic decay of the city. The enchanting Citadel which has stood since ancient times.

We visited a spice shop, which was something on our list that we wanted to do. There were so many colorful spices that we got to sample. Some we have never even heard of before. We filled our bag with thyme, nuts, cinnamon and dried pineapple.

After our Amman city tour we drove out to Jerash, about a 50 minute drive north of Amman. This Roman city is full of intact ruins, temples, and rich of history.

We headed back to our hotel – Grand Hyatt Amman for a super late flight home at 3am. We spent the evening at the spa and ordering room service of pizza and champagne.

This trip was a DREAM! It was full of unforgettable experiences, and I came home with a bunch of memories. My perception of the Middle East was completely changed, and I am eager to travel back to more of those countries. Travel with the experts for a carefully curated, value-packed discovery of the world's most iconic destinations. Our tours are bursting with must-see sights, rich experiences and quality inclusions, all at an unbeatable price. Bucket list dreams are ticked off on these all-encompassing journeys.

Day 1 Cairo

Salaam Alaikum! Welcome to Egypt. On arrival at the airport, make your way to your hotel located near the Pyramids of Giza.

A buzzing metropolis, home to at least 19 million people, Cairo gives you a great feel for Egyptian streetlife. It’s busy – almost frantic – and among the hustle and bustle, it’s an exciting blend of old world and new. Arabs call this city Umm al-Dunya (the mother of the world). There are many beautiful mosques to visit, like the Mohammed Ali Mosque in the Citadel. Or head to the oldest part of Cairo, the Babylon Fortress, to see ancient ruins. For stunning panoramic views of the capital, go up the 187-metre-high Cairo Tower.

Try some street food – lamb shawarma, anyone? – or get a taste of Egyptian street life by visiting a cafe. Sit in an ahwa and sip traditional mint tea. The shisha pipe can be found in many ahwas and restaurants across Cairo.

Day 2 Cairo

This morning, meet your guide and head out to see some of the world’s most iconic sights – the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx. Explore these structures that have stood tall for some 4,500 years and learn about the ancient history of the monuments. The oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the only one to remain largely intact, the pyramids are a sight to behold.

Afterwards, we visit the Egyptian Museum, home to one of the world's great collections of antiquities. Wander the treasure-filled halls of the museum, a highlight of which is the masses of gleaming artefacts recovered from the tomb of Tutankhamun.

Day 3 Cairo Luxor

Today, enjoy a free day at leisure.

Later this afternoon you'll be transferred to the airport to board your included flight to Luxor.

Join a local guide to get in touch with Cairo's Islamic heart. From backstreet bazaars to minaret-topped mosques, and neighbourhood coffee houses, these are the places that make Egypt's sprawling capital what it is. We will visit Sultan Hassan mosque and Madrasa, the finest piece of early Mamluk architecture in Cairo. It was built between 1356 and 1363 by Sultan Hassan then we will enjoy a walk in Moez street starting form Bab el Fetouh and we will end our Adventure in Khan El Khalili Bazaar. A labyrinth of narrow streets and passageways, Khan el-Khalili is one of the world’s largest bazaars and offers a truly authentic local Cairo experience.

Please note: the start and duration times outlined are subject to change based on factors beyond our control such as traffic and weather conditions. Your Tour Guide will confirm operation times with you whilst on-tour and can answer any further questions you may have.

Starts: 8:30am End: 3:30pm Inclusions: private transportation, private guide

Day 4 Luxor Embark on Nile Cruise

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel then we'll explore the magnificent Karnak Temple, which is perhaps the most impressive of all the ancient pharaohs' monumental works. One of the world's most celebrated temple complexes, Karnak was built over some 200 years and was once known as the 'Chosen of Places'. Your guided tour of this vast temple of impressive pylons, obelisks and chapels will reveal its finest sections, such as the Avenue of Sphinxes and the Great Temple of Amun.

Then it’s time to embark on your luxury Nile cruise that will be home for the next 4 nights. You’ll cruise between Luxor and Aswan on this elegant ship, with all the comforts you would expect from a 5-star floating hotel.

Please note that since the sailing distance between Luxor and Aswan is approximately 200kms, that it is typical for all cruises operated along the Nile to be docked for majority of the time to conduct sightseeing, with the sailing to occur of an evening. The vessel will be docked either in Luxor or Aswan. Depending on the time of year and number of vessels operating at the same time, you will also find that all vessels are docked beside one another, which is beyond our control.

To ensure that our customers have appropriate expectations prior to their journey, it is important not to compare this experience to that of a European River Cruise, which tend to cover a greater distance and on larger vessels. Instead, you will experience a Deluxe stay on-board your vessel, offering a great chance to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the banks of the Nile while you sit back and relax. Your cruise schedule will be provided once on-board.

Situated on the East Bank of the Nile River, in the city of Luxor, Luxor Temple was built approximately 1400 BC. The site is over 73 sq km and exhibits obelisks, giant statues, an Avenue of Sphinx statues, the Grand colonnade and the Barque Shrine of Theban Triad. Viewing is as majestic at night as it is during the day.

Start: 4:00pm End: 6:00pm Inclusions: return transfers to temple, entrance into Luxor Temple

Day 5 Luxor Valley of the Kings Luxor Edfu

Today we'll discover some of the many wonders of ancient Thebes. Our first stop is the Colossi of Memnon – two 17-metre-high statues on Luxor's west bank. Carved from granite blocks, they represent the Pharaoh Amenhotep III and were once part of an impressive colonnade.

Continue on to the spectacular royal burial site of the Valley of the Kings. Buried under the arid hills here are the tombs of more than 60 pharaohs, many richly decorated with reliefs and paintings. Explore this sprawling and spectacular place with your guide, where the pharaohs of the New Kingdom (16th to 11th century BCE) were secretly interred for all eternity, and where archaeological discoveries are still being made. Your guide will explain the history of and legends surrounding these remarkable people, their funerary rites, and the significance of the many paintings and hieroglyphics, still well-preserved in the deepest tombs.

After paying a visit to three of the most interesting royal tombs we'll continue to the Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, a stunning colonnaded building of sharp lines that contrasts beautifully against the craggy high cliffs behind it, creating a spectacular natural amphitheatre. One of Egypt’s greatest queens, this temple was built to prove her importance among the ancestors.

Enjoy lunch upon your return to the boat. There is time to relax on deck, or in your cabin, before we set sail for Edfu. Generally the journey from Luxor to Edfu takes place between 1pm an 11 pm, though the departure time may vary, depending on river traffic. En route to Edfu we pass through the Esna Lock and head upstream.

Edfu Temple Please note: The only mode of transport available to visit the Temple of Edfu is by locally managed horse and carriages. As a responsible travel-focused business, animal welfare is extremely important to us and we want to ensure that we are not promoting any activities where the working animals are not properly cared for. Unfortunately, some operators of the Horse and Carriages have been found to be in breach of our animal welfare guidelines and it is, for this reason, we will no longer include the visit to the Temple of Edfu.

In addition to the animal welfare concerns, we have had a substantial amount of feedback suggesting that the experience itself is quite uncomfortable due to the pushy nature of the vendors and local suppliers outside the site. While we recommend that you do not use the horse and carriage to visit the Temple, the decision is ultimately up to you. Edfu is an included port stop on the Nile River cruise schedule.

Day 6 Edfu Kom Ombo Aswan

Today we will moor near Edfu – home to ancient settlements and temples, as well as a bustling town centre and a bazaar.

Later we'll return to the boat where we’ll continue travelling upriver, with plenty of free time for relaxing on the sundeck and taking in the surrounding sights – from fishermen casting nets and farmers working their land to the desert hills that frame the lush riverbanks.

This afternoon we'll arrive at Kom Ombo Temple. Set dramatically on the bank of the Nile, 47 kilometres north of Aswan and 168 kilometres south of Luxor, the soaring, chunky columns of the double temple are a magnificent sight to behold as you arrive from the river.

Dedicated to the gods Sobek and Haroeris, the temple's finely carved reliefs give a sense of this area's prominence as capital over the surrounding region during the Ptolemaic era. Today, Kom Ombo may be a sleepy agricultural backwater surrounded by sugar cane fields, but its prime position along the Nile meant it was once one of Upper Egypt's most important centres. Wander through the temple's colonnades, gazing up at scenes of kingly propaganda, and you'll get a sense of this rich history for yourself.

Return to the cruise boat where you’ll continue travelling upriver towards Aswan.

Please note: the only mode of transport available to visit the Temple of Edfu is by locally managed horses and carriages. As a business that seeks to promote responsible travel, animal welfare is extremely important to us at Inspiring Vacations, and unfortunately, some operators of the horse and carriages have been found to be in breach of our animal welfare guidelines. It is for this reason we do not include the visit the Edfu Temple. While we recommend that you do not use the horse and carriage to visit the Temple, the decision is ultimately up to you and your guide can help arrange transport and ensure the best horses are used.

Day 7 Aswan Abu Simbel Aswan

Today you will awake before sunrise for an early morning start. Sit back and relax as you drive to the ancient Abu Simbel temples, near the southern Egyptian border. You will have an early arrival into Abu Simbel to view one of the most incredible sights you will see. The two enormous sandstone structures were built in the 1200s BCE by Ramses II to serve as lasting monuments to himself and his favourite wife Nefertari. The larger temple, dedicated to three major Egyptian deities, features four large statues of Ramses II on its façade, while the smaller temple is dedicated to the goddess of love, Hathor, with statues designed to embody Nefertari.

Set on the banks of the artificial Lake Nasser, the structures were once in danger of being flooded with the construction of the Aswan High Dam but were saved via an extensive project to cut the temples into pieces and move them to higher ground, where they are seen today.

On our return to Aswan the rest of the day is free for you to make your own discoveries.

This afternoon, we'll enjoy a sailboat ride around the Nile River islands in a traditional felucca (a small, traditional Egyptian sailboat).

Philae Temple is situated on an island just south of Aswan. It was built by the last dynasty of ancient Egypt, the Ptolemaic. The temple is dedicated to Isis - the goddess of healing, magic and birth, her husband Osiris and their son Horus.

Take a 20-minute drive from Aswan to the dock, where you will embark on a 20-minute boat ride to Agilkia Island, where the Philae Temple complex is located. You will have approximately 2 hours exploring the island and temple before returning to Aswan by boat and road vehicle.

Start: pending Cairo to Aswan flight  Duration: 3 hours Inclusions: return transportation (boat and road vehicle) from Aswan to Agilkia Island, entrance into Philae Temple complex

Day 8 Aswan Cairo

Today we will leave Aswan and make the short flight back to Cairo. On our return to Cairo enjoy your free time relaxing or doing some last-minute sightseeing.

Sit down for a home-cooked meal with a local family. During this experience, you'll get to visit a local family and learn about Middle Eastern traditions, Egyptian culture and tasty food but most importantly, enjoy a delicious and authentic home cooked meal.

Start: confirmed on tour Duration: 3 hours Inclusions: return transportation, home cooked meal

Day 9 Cairo Amman

Today, say goodbye to your Egyptian tour leader and get ready for the next leg of your journey as you are transferred to the airport for your flight to Amman, Jordan. Welcome to Jordan, cosmopolitan and contemporary, yet steeped in biblical history. On arrival at Amman's Queen Alia International Airport, you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel. You will meet your Jordanian tour leader today.

Day 10 Amman Jerash Amman

After breakfast enjoy a tour of this capital city. Cosmopolitan and contemporary, yet steeped in ancient biblical history, Amman is a bit of a chameleon. Most of the city's historical sites are located downtown. Here we'll visit the Citadel, with remains from the Roman to the early Islamic period; the Jordan Archaeological Museum, which houses the oldest Neolithic statues dating from 8000 to 5000 NC, as well as other valuable artifacts; the souq, where we'll get an idea of everyday life; as well as the beautifully restored 2nd-century Roman Theatre.

Next we'll take a short drive (approximately one-hour) north to Jerash. Once one of the grandest ancient Roman cities in the world, Jerash now boasts some of the best Greco-Roman ruins around. Admire this site's striking collection of crumbling archways, theatres, baths, public buildings and colonnaded streets. Grand columns encircle the city's centrepiece, the Oval Plaza, a wonderfully atmospheric place to linger after exploring this ruined city's lasting riches.

Day 11 Amman Petra

Today marks the beginning of our journey towards the fabled site of Petra. En route we'll visit Madaba, an ancient market town that's home to a number of fine Byzantine mosaics, the most outstanding of which lies within Saint George's Greek Orthodox Church. Here, a map of the Holy Land once carpeted the whole floor, said to contain more than two million pieces. Crafted around 560 CE, a large swathe of this mosaic map can still be viewed, providing the oldest map of Palestine in existence.

Next we'll continue to the ancient village at Dana, on the edge of the Dana Biosphere Reserve, where local artisans sell silver jewellery.

Later, we'll drive along the King's Highway, up to Shobak Castle, sometimes known as Montreal. Perched at the top of a hill in the desert, this ancient Crusader castle was originally built to protect the eastern flank of the Latin Kingdom and its trade routes to the sea before it fell to Muslim sultan Saladin in 1189. Stroll the site and discover a small chapel, original gatehouse, and find out where a long, dark secret passage leads.

Day 12 Petra

Get ready for Petra! A firm fixture on most bucket lists for good reason – the jewel of Jordan is an arresting sight. The so-called Rose City boasts an impressive series of tombs, caves and temples hidden behind ornate façades carved directly into the rock. No one knows the exact date of this desert kingdom's creation, but the lost city of the Nabateans is believed to date as far back as the 2nd century CE. The city has lain empty and unknown for centuries, only rediscovered in 1812 by a Swiss explorer.

You'll feel just like Indiana Jones, as you meander through the narrow canyon known as the Siq; at times the path measures only a few metres wide, with walls soaring up to 180 metres on either side of you. It's easy to imagine the armies and merchants who made their way here many years ago, and the sense of awe they too must have felt upon reaching this ancient rock-hewn kingdom, surrounded by such a stark landscape. The Siq is the main entranceway to The Treasury – perhaps Petra's most iconic sight, and one of its most elaborate temples.

Petra's greatest surprise, however, is its size. With our guide we'll explore the old Roman road, the amphitheatre and several tombs. We'll also climb up to the beautiful façade of the Monastery, from where you will have a magnificent view of the entire site.

Exploring this truly extraordinary destination is sure to be a highlight of your trip.

Day 13 Petra Wadi Rum

We continue to Wadi Rum and browse around the excellent and informative visitor's centre. We'll visit several of Wadi Rum's distinctive rock formations and soak in the vast silence, towering sandstone mountains and spectacular desert landscapes of this surreal 'Valley of the Moon', where, the wind-sculpted rock formations change in hue throughout the day.

We'll also meet with local Bedouins, who live in scattered camps throughout the area, and ride camels to our traditional Bedouin tent, situated deep within the valley. We'll enjoy an evening with them at one of their camps, savouring the hospitality of these nomadic peoples and the uninterrupted desert panoramas.

Wadi Rum is probably best known for its connection with the enigmatic British army officer TE Lawrence, who was based here during the Great Arab Revolt of 1917-18. Much of David Lean's movie on his exploits, Lawrence of Arabia , was actually filmed in this very region.

Please note - While we are sure that this experience will inspire you, please be aware that your stay will differ from that of a traditional hotel. There are no hotels in or near Wadi Rum: the only places to sleep are the numerous bedouin-run camps dotted around the desert. The camps that we use are quoted as being 'luxury' because their locations differ from other styles of camps and your tent will have its own ensuite. Even at the best and more 'luxurious' camps, bathroom facilities within the tents are somewhat rudimentary and the bedding can also be quite basic, however still offering you a comfortable nights' accommodation. All of your meals are included and will be served in a common social area. While we may not make it sound glamorous, it will be a unique and memorable experience.

Day 14 Wadi Rum Dead Sea Amman

After waking up in the unique environment of the luxury camp this morning, we'll enjoy a walk around the area before scaling one of the large dunes to enjoy sensational views of the surrounding area; keen photographers will be delighted. We'll then ride camels back across the Wadi Rum desert.

Later, we'll drive for approximately an hour and a half to reach a radically different landscape – the Dead Sea. We'll spend the afternoon on the shores of this famous body of water, named for the dearth of life in its waters. The saline water has a high density that keeps bathers buoyant and makes getting underneath the surface very difficult. Floating on the surface without any sort of lilo makes for a once in a lifetime experience. Afterwards we'll return to Amman for the evening.

Day 15 Amman

Unfortunately, today marks the end of your incredible tour through Egypt and Jordan.

We hope you've been inspired.

We suggest USD$5 per person per day towards the kitty. Please note that this tipping is not for the guide, merely for the guide to tip the services of the driver and local workers during your tour. While not made compulsory, if you choose not to contribute to the kitty it means that the guide is tipping for these services out of their own pocket. Your cooperation in this instance is most appreciated.

Tipping for your guide will be collected at the commencement or conclusion of their services in each country. To remove the uncertainty and stress of not knowing how much is appropriate to tip we recommend USD$6-8 per person per day.
