Find a travel health clinic

It is recommended that you contact a doctor, nurse or health care provider, or visit a travel health clinic, preferably six weeks before you travel.

Travel health services are available in most communities or through your family doctor. One way to find a health care site that provides travel health services is through the Public Health Agency of Canada’s list of designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres.

The world is a small place. We’ll help you travel safely with our range of Travel Clinic Services.

We provide an extensive range of travel vaccinations for you when travelling to worldwide destinations. Our centre is just three minutes from Waterloo Station.

We are competitively priced and you can see our full price list here. We do not charge for consultations. We accept major credit cards only for payment.

Arranging your Visit

The process is straightforward:

Complete Travel Questionnaire

If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel, please complete our online travel form via accuRx .

It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible - at least 8 weeks before you travel - as a second appointment will be required with the practice nurse to actually receive the vaccinations. These vaccines have to be ordered as they are not a stock vaccine. Your second appointment needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work. Some travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge. This is because not all travel vaccinations are included in the services provided by the NHS.

Nurse Review

Our travel nurse will then assess your form within 7 working days.

  • If there are available appointments before you travel a member of our reception team will be in contact to book you a travel consultation.
  • If there are no travel appointments available before you travel you will be informed by our team.
  • Please note we require you to submit your travel form 4-6 weeks before travelling.
  • If you are travelling at short notice it is extremely unlikely we will be able to offer you an appointment at Waterloo Health Centre.

London Travel Clinic (call 0208 261 7551 ) can offer same day appointments if leaving at short notice.

Contact the surgery after 48 hours

Patient's are advised to contact the surgery after 48 hours of initial form submission to find out if any vaccinations are required - at which point they can book an appointment to have these done.

Malaria Prevention

  • NHS Lambeth CCG no longer supports the routine prescribing of malaria prevention medicines on the NHS locally, for travel abroad. This will bring prescribing in the borough in line with national guidance.
  • You can visit a private travel health clinic to get these malaria prevention medicines. Some community pharmacies also provide private travel health services.
  • You do not need a prescription for malaria prevention medicines.
  •  It is important to consider the cost of malaria prevention medicines when budgeting for your trip abroad as there will be a charge for the medicines.
  • Always buy malaria prevention medicines from a reputable source in the UK before travel so that you can be sure that they are not fake or poor quality.
  • You can find out if malaria prevention medicines are necessary or recommended for where you are travelling to by visiting: Travel Health Pro

Travelling in Europe

Your rights & EU rules

If you are travelling to Europe the EU has published useful information for travellers on the  European website .

As an EU national, you enjoy the right of free movement. This means you’re entitled to travel, work and live in another EU country. If you’re a citizen of a Schengen country – which is most EU countries – you’re also free to travel to other Schengen countries without the need for border checks.

As an EU national, you can also benefit from EU-wide passenger rights for travel into, out of or within the EU by air, rail, bus/coach or ship. International travel increases your chances of getting and spreading diseases that are rare or not found in United States. Find out which travel vaccines you may need to help you stay healthy on your trip.

Before Travel

Make sure you are up-to-date on all of your routine vaccines . Routine vaccinations protect you from infectious diseases such as measles that can spread quickly in groups of unvaccinated people. Many diseases prevented by routine vaccination are not common in the United States but are still common in other countries.

Check CDC’s destination pages for travel health information . Check CDC’s webpage for your destination to see what vaccines or medicines you may need and what diseases or health risks are a concern at your destination.

Make an appointment with your healthcare provider or a travel health specialist  that takes place at least one month before you leave. They can help you get destination-specific vaccines, medicines, and information. Discussing your health concerns, itinerary, and planned activities with your provider allows them to give more specific advice and recommendations.

Because some vaccines require multiple doses, it’s best to see your health care provider as soon as possible.

Medicines to prevent malaria are pills that you start to take before travel. Take recommended medicines as directed. If your health care provider prescribes medicine for you, take the medicine as directed before, during, and after travel.

Where can I get travel vaccines?

You may be able to get some travel vaccines from your primary healthcare provider. If you or your healthcare provider need help finding a location that provides certain vaccines or medicines, visit CDC’s Find a Clinic page.

If yellow fever vaccine is recommended or required for your destination, you’ll need to go to a vaccine center authorized to give yellow fever vaccinations. Many yellow fever vaccine centers also provide other pre-travel health care services. Find an  authorized US yellow fever vaccine center .

Vaccine centre opens at Health Services

This message was originally sent to Waterloo students and employees by Vivek Goel, president and vice-chancellor.

  • A vaccine centre for students, employees and their families will open at Health Services on July 12, 2021
  • You can now book an appointment by phone
  • More information to come about Waterloo Region Step 2 changes on Monday

I am pleased to announce that the University of Waterloo will open a vaccine centre at Health Services for students and employees on July 12, 2021.   This is a positive step for the University and an important piece of our overall plans to support a safe and staged return to campus. An on-campus vaccine centre for students, employees, and their families will help more of our university community get vaccinated, which is critical as we work towards more in-person campus experiences in September.   I encourage everyone in our campus community to get their first or second dose as soon as possible. This advice follows that of local public health officials, the Ontario and Federal governments and the World Health Organization regarding how best to contain the pandemic and safely re-open our communities.   Please find more information below on how to schedule an appointment.   Lastly, with the recent announcement that Waterloo Region is moving into Step 2 on Monday, you can expect an update on this early next week.

What to expect when arriving at Waterloo's mass COVID-19 vaccination clinic

Rosie Del Campo

Rosie Del Campo CTV News Kitchener Anchor

@RosieDelCampo Contact

KITCHENER -- New COVID-19 vaccination clinics opened in Waterloo Region this week and pre-registration is now open to adults over 70.

  • READ MORE: How do I get the coronavirus vaccine in Waterloo Region?

CTV Kitchener’s Rosie Del Campo spoke to Celina Sousa, the site operations manager at the COVID-19 vaccination clinic at 435 The Boardwalk in Waterloo to find out what you can expect when you arrive at a clinic for your shot.

What do you do and what’s involved in your role?

I’m the site operations manager for the clinic, which essentially provides oversight to about 50 staff and volunteers and other management staff in running the clinic so we can safely get folks through the clinic.

What happens when someone arrives at the clinic?

On arrival they will come into the north entrance of the boardwalk clinic. They will be greeted by a greeter and a screener who will ask the typical COVID-19 screening questions that many of us have experienced going into premises. So people will be screened for any symptoms and will only be permitted to continue if they declare no to all the symptoms on the COVID-19 questionnaire. They then proceed to a station where they will be provided with a new mask, a new face covering as well as hand sanitizer for proper sanitizing. They will check in for their appointment and present their health card, check in and make sure they’re at the right time and at the right place for their immunization and proceed to a more formal registration process just before they get immunized.

How long does the process take and how long is the wait in general?

We’ve been running with people sometimes walking right in and as is the case early in the mornings we try to open up and get people going as soon as possible. We’re running at about a 10-minute wait time. Most people are waiting inside the vestibule. We’re trying to avoid any outdoor lineups as much as possible and the entire process really depends on the client as well and whether they’re coming in a group with their partner or their spouse and a caregiver and also their own mobility. So the entire process could last anywhere from between 40 minutes and an hour. Clients are asked to wait in recovery post-immunization just to make sure they feel alright and that adds that extra time at the end in recovery before they check out.

Who can come with you?

If anyone needs assistance either for mobility issues or translation is allowed to bring in a caregiver or a friend, family member. Certainly couples who have their appointments together can come together and will be immunized at the same station together. So we do encourage caregivers to come if clients need any type of assistance.

How many people are being vaccinated at the Boardwalk clinic?

We are vaccinating currently on our 12 hour shift which starts from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. We’re vaccinating 600 people a day.

Under what circumstances could someone be turned away at a clinic?

People need an appointment, so of course our vaccine doses are based on the appointments made for the day. An appointment is required. We do have the ability for those who are looking for an appointment we will provide information on how they can obtain that. The other reason some people might get somewhat through the process and be deferred for their vaccine is if there are health issues that are identified at the immunization stage and we need them to consult with their primary care provider.

Which vaccine is available at the clinic and are you offered a choice?

At the Boardwalk only Pfizer is available, that is what has been available from the beginning. There is no choice at this time and certainly people who receive Pfizer for their first dose would be receiving Pfizer for their second dose.

What happens right after you get the shot? What can you expect?

Right after people get the shot they will be led to a recovery area where they’re asked to sit for 15 minutes before they check out. These 15 minutes are intended to monitor individuals to make sure that there are no adverse events as a result of the immunization, making sure people are okay to leave. So it’s really a time to rest, a time to relax a little bit, right before they check out.

Anything regarding potential side effects that people should be aware of immediately afterwards?

At the immunization stage, once they are with the immunizer, they will be provided with information on post-vaccine, what they can expect. They’re provided with a handout that they can take home that they can refer to in the oncoming days. That information is provided directly to the client so that they’re aware that if there’s anything unusual they would report that.

What information is someone given after the vaccine about when they will be able to get the next dose?

At the checkout stage they will be provided with a receipt that they received their first vaccination and the information on their second appointment will be on either that receipt or a card that we provide to individuals. Those individuals who have registered using an email address will also receive a confirmation by email. We do encourage people as much as possible to provide an email address, whether it be an email address for a relative or a friend, who can receive those emails on their behalf. It does help with ensuring that people have the confirmation.

Anything specific people should bring with them? Anything specific they should wear?

We do ask people to bring their health card with them or any type of government issued identification. It does help us ensure we’re immunizing the right people. We ask people wear a shirt or something they can roll up the sleeve for the immunization process. We do ask people wear a mask, following public health guidelines on physical distancing and sanitize.

It’s important for people to know when they’re making an appointment there are a number of clinics open in the region. There is, of course, the Boardwalk which is available, the Grand River Hospital immunization clinic was the first to open and is also available with the transition, also the Health Sciences Campus Clinic, Langs Community Health Centre in Cambridge and the Wellesley Vaccination Clinic in Wellesley. We’re trying to position clinics for convenient locations for clients to attend and to ramp up the immunization effort in our region.

COVID-19 vaccination clinic at The Boardwalk in Waterloo to close next month

'demand for vaccine has waned' in recent months, official says.

travel vaccination clinic waterloo

Social Sharing

The COVID-19 vaccination clinic at The Boardwalk in Waterloo will close on June 12. It's the last mass vaccination clinic in the region.

David Aoki, director of infectious disease, sexual health and harm reduction for Waterloo Region, told regional councillors on Wednesday night that the lease for the space the clinic uses is due to expire at the end of June and won't be renewed.

"Over the last few months, demand for vaccine has waned," he said.

People can get the vaccine through their doctor's office or pharmacists, "meaning we no longer require large, mass immunization sites to meet the needs of our residents," Aoki said.

The Boardwalk has provided more than 240,000 doses of the vaccine over 16 months.

Aoki said the clinic's closure is in line with the region's plan to offer mobile and accessible options for people to get their doses of the vaccine. That includes holding pop-up clinics at libraries, long-term care and retirement homes and with community partners.

As well, smaller clinics will continue to operate at 99 Regina St. in Waterloo and 30 Christopher Dr. in Cambridge.

Presence of COVID-19 still 'relatively high'

During a COVID-19 update on Wednesday night, the region's medical officer of health, Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang, said wastewater testing shows that the most recent wave of the pandemic "continues to recede," although the presence of the virus in the region remains "relatively high."

There have been fewer outbreaks in high-risk settings and hospitalizations from COVID-19 in recent weeks, she said.

"Barring the emergence of variants that could change the trajectory of the current wave, we can expect the key indicators to continue to trend downwards in the coming weeks," Wang said.

The region recently changed how often it reports COVID-19 data on its dashboard. Updates now take place on Tuesdays and Fridays.

  • COVID-19 in Waterloo region's wastewater remains high at 3 testing sites
  • Waterloo region's largest COVID vaccination clinic closes, staff say 'it's bittersweet'

The most recent update on Tuesday showed there were 39 people in hospital with COVID-19, and eight people were in the intensive care unit either with, or recovering from, the virus.

A total of 417 deaths have been linked to COVID-19 in the region.

There were also 12 outbreaks in high-risk settings:

  • Eight in long-term care and retirement homes.
  • Three in congregate settings.
  • One at Grand River Hospital in Kitchener.
