11 Of The Best Things To Do In Newry In Northern Ireland

There’s plenty of things to do in Newry and there’s  endless  places to visit closeby.

Divided by the Clanrye River in counties Armagh and Down, it makes a mighty base to explore from, especially if you’re fond of a good hike!

Below, you’ll discover what to do in Newry regardless of time of year – dive on in!

The first section of the guide is packed with our favourite things to do in Newry in Northern Ireland.

Below, you’ll find walks, great food and places to visit in Newry when it’s pouring down outside!

1. Start your visit with a caffeine kick from Grounded Espresso Bar

Grounded Espresso Bar

The best start to the day is kicked off with excellent quality coffee, as per the Grounded Espresso Bar at the Merchants Quay in the city.

You can also order a breakfast to set you up for the day here—sausage and bacon bap with a heap of brown sauce anyone?

There’s also plenty of tempting sweet treats, such as waffles with vanilla ice-cream and chocolate sauce, a dark, fudgy warm chocolate cake or apple pie.

2. Admire the architecture at Newry Cathedral

Newry Cathedral

A visit to the town’s impressive cathedral is one of the more popular things to do in Newry. Newry Cathedral or the Cathedral of Saint Patrick and Saint Colman, is a Roman Catholic cathedral which acts as the seat of the Bishop of Dromore.

It was designed by Thomas Duff and work on its construction began in 1825. Although it was completed in 1829, work continued to enlarge and beautify the cathedral throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

It is a Grade A listed building and made from local granite, and the interior decorate is said to be second to none in Ireland.

3. Spend a rainy morning at Newry and Mourne Museum

Newry and Mourne Museum

Newry and Mourne Museum first opened in 1986 moved to the larger premises at Bagenal’s Castle in 2007, where you will find it now.

The castle was built in the environs of the site of a Cistercian abbey and was an early example of a fortified residence, which was sympathetically restored according to drawings from a survey of the castle completed in the late 16th century.

In the museum, you’ll find prehistoric exhibits and artefacts from Newry’s time as a merchant town, the working life of the area and the modern experience of living in a border region.

If you’re looking for things to do in Newry when it’s raining, this is a great option.

4. And a sunny one in the grounds of Derrymore House

Derrymore House is a National Trust property—a late 18th century house thatched in what is called the gentrified vernacular style.

It sits at the heart of a late 18th century landscape park and dense woodland, where the area provides a sanctuary for wildlife and a lovely place to stroll.

Derrymore was the home of the MP for Newry from 1776, Issac Corry, and he commissioned John Sutherland the leading landscape gardener of the day, to carry out improvements.

The gardener enhanced the existing woodland by planting thousands more trees and these days, you can enjoy the mature oak, chestnut, pine and beech trees that dominate the woodlands.

5. Take a spin up to Bernish Viewpoint and then Ballymacdermott Court Tomb

Ballymacdermott Court Tomb

Photo via Google Maps

Bernish Viewpoint offers terrific views over the local area and has picnic benches sited there, making it a great place to stop by for a picnic on a sunny day.

Next up is the Ballymacdermott Court Tomb, an extremely well presented Neolithic burial site with three chambers that lies on the southern slops of the Ballymacdermott Mountain.

The tomb is dated between 4000 and 2500 BCE and from here, you are rewarded with excellent views of Slieve Gullion and the smaller hills of the Ring of Gullion Area of Outstanding Beauty as well as the Mourne Mountains .

6. Soak up the views from Flagstaff view point

If you’re looking for things to do in Newry on a fine morning head up to Flagstaff view point. This popular view point on Fatham Hill close to Newry offers wonderful views over Carlingford Lough , the Mourne Mountains and the Cooley Mountains.

Where does the name come from? Flagstaff comes from the fact that once upon a time, flags used to be hoisted on the hill to announce that boats had arrived at Carlingford Lough.

Now that we have our favourite things to do in Newry out of the way, it’s time to see what else the area has to offer.

Below, you’ll find everything from hikes and walks to scenic drives, cycle routes and much more.

1. Walk the Newry Canal Way

Newry Canal Way

If you’re after some active things to do in Newry it’s worth tackling the Newry Canal Way which covers 20 miles and runs from Portadown to Newry along the restored towpath of the former Newry Canal.

The linear walking/cycle path has a flat, level surface that is suitable for all. Points of interest to note include Moneypenny’s Lock House, the old locks, and the bird and wildlife you will see in abundance.

Look out for the swans and the herons that have made the canal their home. Facilities include the Scarva Visitor Centre Tearooms open during the summer months from Easter to the end of September (closed Mondays), where there are also public toilets.

2. Take a spin out to Slieve Gullion Forest Park (15-minute drive)

Slieve Gullion

The drive out to Slieve Gullion Forest Park is worth the trip alone as there is much for the visitor to stare at in amazed wonder. It is about a fifteen minute drive.

At the park, there are tranquil woodland trails , and stunning views across the Ring of Gullion, Mourne Mountains, the Cooley Peninsula and the Armagh Drumlins.

For the kids, there’s an Adventure Playpark and a Giant’s Lair to explore, as well as an outdoor performance stage, picnic benches and an ornamental walled garden.

3. Visit Kilbroney Park in Rostrevor (20 minutes’ drive)

Kilbroney Park Forest is one of the most overlooked places to visit in Northern Ireland , in our opinion!

There is also a two-mile forest drive that showcases the panoramic views over Carlingford Lough and a play park with a children’s playground and tennis courts, along with an information area and onsite café.

The forest drives takes you to a car park, from where you can climb up to see the Cloughmore Stone which sits some 1,000ft above Rostrevor.

4. Head off on the new Game of Thrones Studio Tour (20 minutes’ drive)

Games of Thrones Studio Tour

The official HBO Game of Thrones studio tour is located at the filming location of Linen Mill Studios in Banbridge, Northern Ireland, and here you will get to step behind the scenes of The Seven Kingdoms and beyond.

It’s an experience of the world of Game of Thrones like never before, that sets out how the TV series was created and brought to life on screen and includes memorabilia from the show.

Expect the see everything from the initial concept sketches for King’s Landing, Castle Black and Winterfell along with the intricate and detailed designs by the award-winning costume department that helped to create and define the show’s characters.

5. Try one of many nearby walks

Mourne Mountains

There’s endless walks close to Newry. Some of the more popular trails are Slieve Foye , the Annaloughan Loop Walk and Ravensdale Forest , each of which are a 25-minute drive away.

There’s also the Spelga Dam (30-minute drive), Slieve Muck (30-minute drive), Slieve Donard (45-minute drive) and Slieve Croob (50-minute drive).

15 Best Things to Do in Newry (Northern Ireland)

Resting in a hollow on its namesake river, the city of Newry is divided between Counties Armagh and Down near the border with Ireland.

There’s breathtaking nature wherever you go, starting with the waters of the Carlingford Lough, which has the sensational Cranfield Beach at its mouth.

To the west are the rounded peaks of the Mourne Mountains, a source of granite for the UK’s industrial revolution and containing the stark beauty of the Silent Valley Mountain park.

In the east is the volcanic Ring of Gullion Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, peppered with monuments and archaeological sites, infused with Irish Mythology and going back to the Stone Age.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Newry :

1. Newry Cathedral

Newry Cathedral

The most striking monument in Newry is the Grade A-listed Gothic Revival cathedral, constructed from local granite in the 1820s.

The architect was Thomas Duff, one of Newry’s most famous sons, who designed a number of churches and cathedrals in the northeast of Ireland, all with a Gothic Revival design.

Extensions were made over the next century with the addition of the tower, transept and chancel.

Inside, the vaulting, floor tiles and stained glass are all worth a look, while artisans from Italy were hired for the marble dressing and mosaics, which took five years to complete.

2. Newry and Mourne Museum

Newry And Mourne Museum

Bagenal’s Castle has seen a lot of change since it was founded as a fortified house in the 16th century.

The castle was built on the site of Newry’s 12th-century Cistercian abbey, but until the 1980s a lot of its fittings had been lost as the castle had been used as an industrial bakery from the end of the 19th century.

Those excavations in the 80s brought to light the original window frames, fireplaces, gun loops and doorways.

The banquet hall was also restored and now hosts functions throughout the year.

At the museum you can pore over Newry’s folklore and past, learning about the Cistercian abbey founded at the same time as the city and reading up on the record-breaking 18th-century Newry Canal.

3. Slieve Gullion

Slieve Gullion Forest Park

In the middle of the Ring of Gullion is Armagh’s highest peak, 573 metres high and with a view that will stop you in your tracks.

Up here you can take in the rest of the Ring of Gullion, the Armagh Drumlins and the Mourne Mountains to the east.

The slopes are decked with bare stone, heather and dry heath and at the top are two cairns on either side of a lake.

The cairn to the south is officially the highest passage grave in Ireland.

Pay a visit to the Slieve Gullion Forest Park, which has a visitor centre, walled garden, adventure playpark and the Giant’s Lair, a themed trail in 1.5 kilometres of forest, inspired by Slieve Gullion’s rich Irish Mythology.

4. Derrymore House

Derrymore House

In 100 hectares of meadows and woods lies Derrymore House, built at the end of the 18th century in a quaint gentrified vernacular style.

You’ll know what this means when you see the property, now managed by the National Trust.

In the fashion of a “cottage orné”, popular in the period, Derrymore House has a thatched roof made from Shannon reeds.

This belies the high status of the building, which was a summer lodge for Newry’s MP Isaac Corry.

For £2 you can go in to view the drawing room, or amble for free through the blissful grounds, which make up the final stretch of the Ring of Gullion Way.

5. Ballymacdermot Court Tomb

Ballymacdermot Court Tomb

The pick of the Stone Age monuments near Newry is this burial site, which has a stunning vantage point on the south side of Ballymacdermot Mountain.

This monument would have been active between 6,000 and 4,500 years ago and has an inspiring view of the Meigh plain.

There’s a court, almost forming a complete circle, and on one side are three distinct chambers that have long since lost their roofs.

These were once held up by corbels, which you can still see in the middle chamber.

There’s another court tomb nearby at Clontygora, and a portal tomb at Ballykeel, while the Bernish viewpoint a few minutes away offers yet more picturesque views.

6. Silent Valley Mountain Park

Silent Valley Mountain Park

The Silent Valley Reservoir was built from 1923 to 1933 to catch the water flowing off the Mourne Mountains in response to Belfast’s sudden expansion at the start of the 20th century.

That immense catchment area is encircled by the Mourne Wall, a 35-kilometre dry-stone construction that took 18 years to complete.

Silent Valley shines for the crucible of mountains surrounding the reservoir, as well as the scenery from those smooth granite peaks.

Since 2014 three new walking trails have allowed walkers to get more from the park, taking you up to the Mourne Wall, which traverses 15 of the peaks in the Mourne Mountains.

7. Moyry Castle

Moyry Castle

Guarding the Moyry Pass and the Gap of the North not far south of Jonesborough is a campaign fort from the Nine Years’ War at the turn of the 17th century.

Moyry Castle was ordered by Lord Mountjoy, the Lord Deputy of Ireland under Queen Elizabeth I, and has a single tower, three storeys high on top of a “bawn” or outer wall.

The Moyry Pass was the path of least resistance for armies marching through hilly, bog-covered terrain.

Most people who have travelled on the Dublin-Belfast railway will have seen Moyry from the train, and you can come by to nose around and get some atmospheric shots of the tower.

8. Cranfield Beach

Cranfield Beach

Just at the northern lip of the Carlingford Lough, Cranfield Beach is a broad sand and shingle bay on a shallow gradient.

From around the end of June to the start of September this Blue Flag beach is patrolled by an RNLI lifeguard, and if you’re ready to brave the crisp Irish Sea you can swim between the yellow and red flags.

The beach merits a walk at any time of year for the arresting view of the Mourne Mountains to the north.

Behind the beach there’s nothing more than homes and caravan parks, so makes sense to pack a picnic if you’re going to spend the day.

9. Killeavy Old Churches

Killeavy Old Churches

Enclosed in a historic cemetery are the ruins of two churches built back-to-back at the base of Slieve Gallion.

The west church goes back to the 1000s, while the east church is from the 1400s.

Both were part of an ancient monastery founded in the 6th century by Saint Moninna and functioning for a whole millennium, but closed with the Abolition of the Monasteries.

While you’re visiting this evocative spot you could consider some of the mishaps to befall the monastery, like a Viking raid in 923 and a devastating storm in 1146. In the northern part of the cemetery you’ll see a granite flagstone believed to cover the grave of Saint Moninna.

10. Annalong Cornmill

Annalong Cornmill

Right before the Annalong River enters the Irish Sea at the namesake village is a restored watermill in use from the start of the 19th century until the 1960s.

Despite the name, the Annalong Cornmill was in the business of grinding oats into oatmeal, and during more than 150 years only three different families ran the enterprise.

From April to October the mill opens its doors, and you can go in to catch up on Mourne rural culture, see the mill’s mechanism and get the mill’s inside story from a re-enactor.

There’s also an exhibition about Mourne’s “stonemen”, quarrying granite and loading it onto schooners to build England and Scotland’s industrial cities.

11. Narrow Water Keep

Narrow Water Keep

Right where the Newry River opens onto Carlingford Lough is an enchanting castle keep raised in the 16th century and enclosed by a bawn.

The earliest fortification at this spot goes back to the 13th century and was devised to protect control river traffic heading to Newry by Hugh de Lacy, 1st Earl of Ulster.

Later, Narrow Water became a “Tower House” for nobility, and there are some fascinating elements to be identified on the outside like arrow loops on the corners to avoid blind spots, and corner quoins made from limestone, contrasting with the granite rubble of the walls.

12. Flagstaff Viewpoint

Flagstaff Viewpoint

This treasured scenic lookout is over the right bank of the Newry River, opposite the Narrow Water Keep and a few hundred metres from the Irish border.

There’s a large car park at the foot of the hill, and you can climb through heather to watch the river winding down to the Carlingford Lough.

Up here on Barry’s Rock stands a flagpole, 12 metres in height on the site of a historic flag.

This was hoisted to help sailors entering the estuary work out the direction and force of the wind, but also may have been a way of warning smugglers against customs officers.

13. Newry Canal Way

Newry Canal Way

The now defunct Newry Canal was the first summit-level canal in the United Kingdom, built to channel coal from Tyrone to the Irish Seat at Carlingford Lough.

Now you can walk or ride a 32-kilometre section north to Portadown.

The route follows the restored towpath, once used by horses to pull barges along, and threading through some of Northern Island’s most beautiful landscapes on way.

You’ll pass 13 locks, the remnants of old bridges, a host of informative interpretation panels about the canal, as well as the villages of Jerrettspass, Poyntzpass and Scarva.

At Scarva you could take a detour to see the old Terryhoogan aqueduct and the idyllic Lough Shark, much-loved by fishers.

14. Kilnasaggart Standing Stone

Kilnasaggart Standing Stone

Two kilometres south of Jonesborough there’s a two-metre high carved stone, one of the oldest of its kind in Ireland.

The Kilnasaggart Standing Stone dates to the 8th century and is on the site of an early Christian cemetery: Excavations showed a set of graves positioned radially around this central pillar.

On the stone are 13 Celtic crosses, as well as an inscription that reads “This place, bequeathed by Temoc, son of Ceran Bic, under the patronage of Peter, the Apostle.”

15. Seascope Lobster Hatchery

European Lobster

On the coast in Kilkeel, the Seascope Lobster Hatchery is the only marine laboratory in Northern Ireland to welcome visitors.

From Monday to Saturday you can drop in to find out about the work carried out to preserve stocks of European lobsters, as well as blue mussels and Pacific oysters.

The hatchery rears lobsters from eggs to young adults, and you can learn about this process, handle the lobsters and get some insights on the fishing industry, the marine environment and sustainability.

Kids are also catered for, with child-friendly exhibits, arts and crafts and interactive displays.

15 affordable places to travel in 2024, ranked in a new report.

Want to take an affordable vacation in 2024? You’ve come to the right place. Although travel costs are on the rise this year ( up 3.1% ), it’s still possible to save money in 2024—if you know where to go.

A new travel report from the U.K.’s Post Office —a British-based mail and financial services company — has just unveiled some of the most budget-friendly destinations for 2024. And although the annual report is aimed at U.K. travelers, it’s a helpful list for Americans, too.

By analyzing currency strengths, local prices and essential tourist expenses in 40 popular vacation destinations around the globe, the Holiday Money Report 2024 highlights some of the cheapest places to travel. The report ranks the destinations based on a barometer that takes the local price of eight tourist essentials into consideration—including coffee, beer, cola, wine, water, sunscreen, insect repellent and a three-course meal. And while the report doesn’t include factors like hotels and airfare, it helps give a good sense of where your dollars will stretch the furthest.

This is the 18th year that the Post Office has done this report. And the good news: Prices have fallen since last year in 25 spots on the list. (A note that the original report included prices in pounds sterling, which have been converted into dollars here, using the exchange rate on the date of publication of 1.26.)

An aerial view of Hoi An, Vietnam, the most affordable destination to travel in 2024, according to a ... [+] new report.

Leading the list as the cheapest place to travel right now is Hoi An, Vietnam. According to the Post Office report, a total estimated cost of just $64.51 a day for the travel essentials makes this charming gem the ultimate bang-for-your-buck destination that won’t break the bank. Located on the central coast of Vietnam, Hoi An entices visitors with its UNESCO -recognized Ancient Town, a picturesque spot where lantern-lit streets lead to quaint shops and street food stalls. It is also convenient to stunning white-sand beaches—some of the most beautiful in Asia .

Following closely behind in the second spot is Cape Town, South Africa, where an outlay of $68.48 a day for the essentials promises an unforgettable experience against the backdrop of Table Mountain and pristine coastlines. Here, you can dive into the vibrant culture and indulge in world-class dining (a three-course meal for two people averages less than $44.140) without denting your travel fund.

The coastline of Mombasa, Kenya, with a pair of camels on Diani Beach.

Mombasa, Kenya takes the third spot on the list. This beachfront destination on the east coast of Africa beckons with its white-sand shores, vibrant markets and rich Swahili heritage, offering an immersive experience for travelers seeking both relaxation and cultural exploration.

In a surprising twist, Tokyo, Japan—a bustling metropolis where tradition meets modernity—secures the fourth spot on the list. According to the Post Office, just $74.43 a day is needed for essential tourist purchases. Helping drive this ranking was the cost of a glass of wine (an average of only $4.56) and a bottle of water (averaging 77¢).

The cliffs of the Algarve overlooking the Atlantic Ocean above the Benagil cave in Lagoa, Portug.a

Rounding out the top five is the Algarve in Portugal, which combines culture, history and natural beauty at a fraction of the cost compared to previous years. With its sun-drenched beaches, charming villages and delectable seafood, the Algarve offers an idyllic escape for travelers seeking an affordable yet enriching getaway.

Ballynahinch bypass: Petition launched following latest road fatality in Co Down town

A petition has been launched calling for the long-awaited construction of a bypass through a Co Down town where a pensioner has died after being struck by a lorry.

Renewed appeals for a bypass in Ballynahinch have been issued following the road crash tragedy on Monday.

A pedestrian, named locally as Giovanni Buggea and aged in his seventies, died after he was hit by a lorry in the town.

His body was only discovered in the Newcastle Road area of Seaforde when the vehicle stopped at quarry premises around seven miles away.

Mr Buggea, originally from Sicily, but who had lived in the Ballynahinch area for years, has been described as a “a lovely man”.

Local businessman Mark Murnin told the BBC that Mr Buggea was " a wonderful character”.

“Every day you would have seen Giovanni walking around the town,” he said.

“If people didn’t know his name - they knew him from seeing him around the town.

“The level of shock is very high.”

Mr Murnin, a former chairman of Newry, Mourne & Down district council, also told of how he had found a shoe lying in the road on Monday.

“It’s only when I got a call from police that two and two were put together,” he said.

He added that the entire experience had been “very traumatic”.

The latest fatality has reignited the ongoing debate surrounding the proposed A24 bypass.

Plans for a bypass for Ballynahinch have been mooted for years amid hopes that its construction would alleviate the large volume of traffic passing through the Co Down town daily.

If given the green light, the single carriageway bypass, of approximately 3.1km in length, would be built around the eastern periphery of Ballynahinch.

However, delays and a lack of funding has seen the bypass development left on the shelf.

The organiser of the petition states that it was set up “following yet another death due to lorries being forced to travel through the town”

“Not to mention multiple accidents involving lorries and the absurd amount of traffic travelling through the town, it really is time the bypass was pushed through Stormont,” it adds.

“This should also improve trade within the town.

“As the locals will actually be able to travel to and park within the town centre.

“Thank you for your support.“

Sinn Féin MP Chris Hazzard was among the political figures this week to call for a re-examination of the bypass at Ballynahinch.

Speaking after the death of the pensioner, he said: “This is another sad reminder of the pressing need to move forward and deliver the Ballynahinch bypass”.

The Department for Infrastructure has been contacted for comment.

The Ballynahinch bypass aims to address the traffic delays at this particular bottleneck along the A24

This Is the No. 1 U.S. City People Want to Move to in 2024 — and It Has the Largest Retirement Community in the World

Hint: it's in the Sunshine State.

travel world newry

Michael Warren/Getty Images

Americans are on the move. Over eight million people relocated to a different state in 2022, according to estimates by the U.S. Census Bureau . And a new report by relocation company MoveBuddha sheds more light on where Americans are headed in 2024. Based on customer search data, the company identified the most desirable destinations with the highest migration rates, and a city in the Sunshine State topped the list.

The Villages in Central Florida, known as the largest retirement community in the world, had the highest in-to-out ratio, 4.38, meaning that for every one hundred people who leave the city, another 438 move in.

“The Villages is a racehorse that’s outpacing every other city in the country for growth. Fueled by a ‘silver tsunami,’ this Baby Boomtown has been on the rise for a decade and shows no signs of slowing down in 2024. With baby boomers reaching retirement age through 2031, the Florida destination is poised for even more growth in years to come,” the report stated, noting that the community offers a mix of good weather and activities.

MoveBuddha’s analysis also shows that while housing costs are a consideration, Americans are willing to relocate to a destination where real estate prices are not necessarily the lowest. In The Villages, for example, the median home value is $407,528, which is more than the nation’s average of $347,716.

Another destination popular with senior adults that made it to the top three is Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where over a fifth of the population is aged 65 and over. The oceanfront community ranked third with an in-to-out ratio of 3.22.

However, MoveBuddha noted that cities with bustling art scenes located in natural settings draw the most interest overall. Asheville, North Carolina, for example, which takes the No. 2 spot with an in-to-out ratio of 3.29, is one of them. Similarly, Billings, Montana; Chattanooga, Tennessee; Boulder, Colorado; and Burlington, Vermont; are in the top 10 most desirable places to move to in 2024.

But if you are looking for affordability, the report also points out that five of the 25 winning cities have median home values of under $200,000, and those are Dayton, Ohio; Hartford, Connecticut; Tulsa, Oklahoma; Des Moines, Iowa; and Champaign, Illinois.

Another significant outtake from the report is that Americans are no longer leaving urban areas — a trend that started during the COVID-19 pandemic. People favor mid-size cities of about 200,000 residents, with Boston being the most populous of all on the list.

School of Business graduate program surges in top rankings

A U.S. News & World Report methodology change rewards schools for job placement, graduate earnings

travel world newry

The UC Riverside School of Business increased 20 positions in a U.S. News & World Report 2024 graduate school ranking released this week. UCR’s business school was the benefactor of a methodology change this year that places greater emphasis on post-graduation earnings and how quickly graduates found jobs.

The School of Business’ Master of Business Administration program ranked No. 90 on the business school list, released Tuesday, April 9. Though 506 accredited institutions were canvassed, only 124 U.S. graduate-level business programs provided sufficient information on post-graduation earnings and job placements to merit inclusion on the U.S. News list.

“The school’s ascent in the rankings is a testament to its strategic initiatives, such as the expansion of its facilities and the enhancement of its academic offerings, which align with the evolving demands of the global business landscape,” said Rami Zwick, associate dean of graduate programs for the School of Business.

The rankings released this week are based in part on reputational surveys sent to more than 15,000 academics and industry professionals, including corporate recruiters. In the surveys, deans, program directors, and senior faculty are asked to judge the academic quality of a program.

In addition to the surveys, scoring factors selectivity — gauged by graduate exam test scores; undergraduate GPA, and acceptance rate. About half of the score is based on a change this year that places greater emphasis on earnings — assessing post-graduate salaries by profession — and successful job placement. The revised job placement metric rewards business schools when their graduates get jobs quickly — either when they graduate or within three months of graduation.

Separately, the business school’s part-time MBA program was ranked No. 73, an increase of three positions from the past year. That ranking was among 269 universities.

In fall 2024, the School of Business will mark the 55th anniversary of its founding and the 30th anniversary of the A. Gary Anderson School of Management with the opening of a new 63,400-square-foot academic building .

UCR’s School of Education was ranked No. 86 out of 237 positions in the graduate school rankings, which considered only doctoral-level education programs. Last year, the school ranked No. 80.

The education rank is based on research expenditures; assessments by education-school and graduate-school deans and by professionals including recruiters and school superintendents; total degrees awarded; student-faculty ratio; faculty awards; and selectivity, measured by acceptance rates.

U.S. News this week postponed publication of its rankings for medical and graduate engineering programs after some universities questioned the rankings methodology for those programs.

U.S. News & World Report, the standard-bearer among college rankings, publishes its anticipated undergraduate rankings every fall. In the most recent rankings, released in fall 2023, UCR climbed 13 positions to No. 76 overall among U.S. private and public universities. UCR was ranked No. 2 nationally in social mobility, which considers the degree to which a university elevates its graduates to a higher standard of living.

Walt Disney World and Disneyland are changing their policies for guests with disabilities .

The Florida and California resorts will keep their popular Disability Access Service (DAS), but adjust qualifications, registration procedures, and length of validity to help ensure guests receive the accommodations they need.

“Disney is dedicated to providing a great experience for all guests, including those with disabilities, which is why we are so committed to delivering a wide range of innovative support services aimed at helping our guests with disabilities have a wonderful time when visiting our theme parks,” a Disney spokesperson said in a statement.

Here’s what travelers with disabilities should know.

What is DAS?

Disney World and Disneyland previously described their Disability Access Service as a program “to assist guests who have difficulty tolerating extended waits in a conventional queue environment due to a disability.”

Guests who qualify for and enroll in DAS wait just as long as guests in the standby line, sometimes a little longer, but they don’t have to physically stay in the queue. Instead, they can join the line virtually, wait out the designated time elsewhere in the park, then return to the attraction for a shorter wait in person.

Who qualifies for DAS at Disney?

Not all disabilities impact the ability to tolerate long waits in traditional queues. For example, guests in wheelchairs or electric conveyance vehicles may still be able to wait in many lines in their mobility devices.

New updates to the resorts’ accessibility webpages further clarify DAS’ intended audience: “Guests, who due to a developmental disability like autism or similar, are unable to wait in a conventional queue for an extended period of time.”

How do you qualify for a Disney disability pass?

Registering for DAS involves meeting with a specially trained cast member, who can determine if DAS is the right fit.

In the past, that could be done in advance online or in person at both resorts. The conversation itself lasts just minutes, though online waits have historically taken longer.

Need accomodations? Travelers with disabilities will need this card at some theme parks

How is DAS changing?

Starting May 20 for Disney World, guests may only enroll in DAS with a virtual video meeting, not in person at the parks. It’s highly recommended to do so in the planning stages of the trip, but virtual chats will also be available on the day of visits. Again, they will no longer be available in person at Disney World.

Disneyland guests may continue to register for DAS with a virtual video call ahead of their trip, which is strongly encouraged, or in-person on the day of visits, but starting June 18, the location for registration will move from Guests Services inside the parks to the outside esplanade area between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.

Virtual video calls will be similar to what existing and past DAS enrollees are used to having with cast members, but Disney is also partnering with Inspire Health Alliance , whose experts may be brought in.

DAS may be used by the enrollee and up to four companions (or more if there are more than four immediate family members who all want to experience an attraction together).

How long is DAS at Disney good for?

Guests who are previously enrolled in DAS may use it for 60 days from their date of registration, with no changes required.

New enrollees registering between now and May 19 at Disney World or June 17 at Disneyland will have up to 30 days to use the service, starting from their date of registration.

Beginning May 20 at Disney World and June 18 at Disneyland, new DAS enrollments will be valid for 120 days, double the previous 60.

Why is Disney making these changes?

DAS has become the most requested service at Disneyland and Disney World in recent years, with the volume of users eclipsing the program’s intended audience and numbers only expected to grow. That in turn impacts waits and experiences for those who need the accommodations.

The changes are designed to help ensure DAS reaches its intended audience. Meanwhile, Disney is also increasing the number of specially trained cast members to help guests with other access needs find the right accommodations for them.

Those may include American Sign Language interpretation, Disney Handheld Devices that provide captions and visual descriptions for guests with hearing impairment, braille guidebooks and maps, sensory guides for attractions, and at Disneyland, Location Return Times for guests with mobility devices or other physical needs that can’t be accommodated by older, non-wheelchair accessible attraction queues.

What does Disney consider a disability?

Disney recognizes all kinds of disabilities and access needs, many of which are invisible.

While guests won’t find an exhaustive list of disabilities on Disney’s websites, their newly updated accessibility pages serve as a first stop in navigating accommodations.

Cast members are also available to answer questions in staffed virtual chats.

Does Disney request proof of disability?

Disney does not require documentation proving disability or access needs, nor will they be required with these upcoming changes.
