Screen Rant

10 great war movies like megan leavey.

Megan Leavey delivered an emotional punch through its story of a soldier's bond with her military dog, and other war movies echo its themes.

  • Megan Leavey highlighted the powerful bond between soldier and canine companion in a story of conflict and friendship.
  • Other war movies like American Sniper and Private Benjamin explored the after-effects and challenges of wartime experiences.
  • Films such as The Wall and A Private War delved into the intense struggles faced by soldiers and journalists in conflict zones.

The powerful biographical war drama Megan Leavey highlighted important messages about conflict and companionship that have been explored in other incredible war movies. As a true story about a Military Police K9 handler, Megan Leavey starred Kate Mara as a soldier deployed to Iraq who developed an intense bond with a military working dog named Rex. After both were wounded by an explosive device in the conflict zone, Megan was forced to fight for the right to adopt her canine companion in this effective story of conflict, friendship, and the extraordinary bond that can be formed between humans and animals.

Other films that highlighted many of the same themes or ideas seen in Megan Leavey included female-centric war movies like Whiskey Tango Foxtrot , which provided a more comedic side to conflicts in the Middle East and highlighted the challenges faced by women in these circumstances. Other war movies, such as American Sniper , told the true stories of returning veterans and their struggles to adapt to civilian society following the brutality of war and the consequences of PSTD. For those who wished to follow up Megan Leavey with a similarly great war movie , there were plenty of options.

10 American Sniper (2014)

American sniper highlighted the after-effects of war for returning traumatized soldiers, american sniper.

*Availability in US

Not available

American Sniper is based on the true story of U.S. Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle and his tour of duty in Iraq. The film explores his legendary career on the field as he battles hidden in enemy lines to protect his brothers in arms despite the growing bounty on his head and the havoc it wreaked on his personal life.

While Clint Eastwood’s biographical war movie American Sniper had a far higher kill count than what’s depicted on screen in Megan Leavey , both films dealt with devastatingly traumatic consequences of conflict and the difficulties of adjusting to life after wartime. American Sniper told the story of Chris Kyle (Bradley Cooper), a deadly marksman who, over four tours in Iraq, had 255 kills. A tense and sad account of a soldier who underwent extreme psychological challenges, Cooper delivered a powerful performance that showcased the vulnerability at the center of his troubled character.

While Megan Leavey showcased the deep bond that was formed between a soldier and her companion, American Sniper was categorized by the toll PTSD can take on a soldier's personal life . This was a war movie that showcased the effects on those left behind and the neglect returned veterans in the United States often faced. A cautionary tale about the grim realities of war, American Sniper highlighted that, for those who must carry out murderous acts, peace should always be the goal.

9 Private Benjamin (1980)

Private benjamin gave insight into the experiences of female soldiers.

Much like Megan Leavey , Private Benjamin focused on a female soldier who, against all expectations, signed up for the army and found herself having to get used to a new military way of life. However, Private Benjamin was a fictional comedy that followed a sheltered high-society woman named Judith Benjamin (Goldie Hawn) as she confused and astonished those in her life with her impulsive decision. With irresistible charm and an appealing style, Hawn truly excelled as the lead in Private Benjamin .

Private Benjamin stood as one of the biggest box office hits of 1980 and took in $69.8 million against its budget of $9.2 million (via AFI .) The film led to a short-lived television series that recast Hawn with Lorna Patterson and ran for three seasons. Although Private Benjamin took a much more light-hearted approach to its military subject , like Megan Leavey, it highlighted a woman’s right to join the United States Army and the way this was perceived by those in their lives.

8 The Wall (2017 film)

The wall highlighted the challenges faced by those in conflict in the middle east.

Doug Liman’s The Wall is a 2017 dramatic war-thriller that follows two American Soldiers pinned down by an Iraqi sniper, with only a wall of rubble separating them from danger. Sent to investigate a site where all the contractors end up dead, Shane and Allen are caught in a deadly sniper named Juba’s crosshairs and must hold out as they wait for help.

The Wall was a war movie directed by Doug Liman that, like Megan Leavey , told the story of American soldiers serving terms in Iraq. However, instead of focusing on the K9 division and a soldier bonding with their dog, The Wall was about an American sniper and his spotting trapped by a lethal enemy sniper with just an unsteady wall between them. The tension-filled narrative of The Wall amounted to a gripping thriller that was well-paced, well-acted, and highly compelling.

Led by two strong performances from Aaron Taylor-Johnson and John Cena, The Wall was a tight and claustrophobic story that truly captured the difficulties of being stuck and in danger in conflict. With the only one who could hear the two soldiers' calls for help being their enemy sniper, The Wall presented a doomed situation that became even more frightening after one of the men was shot by the sniper. The Wall soon turned into a one-man movie and became nail-bitingly tense as his chance for survival became increasingly unlikely.

7 G.I. Jane (1997)

G.i. jane offered a feminist look at sexism in the military.

While Megan Leavey told the true story of a female soldier and the challenges she faced in Iraq, G.I. Jane was a far more action-orientated story that depicted a female soldier who proved her abilities in a military that was dominated by men. Lieutenant Jordan O'Neil (Demi Moore) overcame gender discrimination as she participated in a grueling military training program in this Ridley Scott-directed movie. As the first woman to enter the elite US Navy SEALs training program, G.I. Jane delivered a powerful feminist message for all those who underestimated women .

While it does not have a true story behind it like Megan Leavey , the messaging at the heart of G.I. Jane was very real.

While G.I. Jane was by no means a perfect film and was brought down by clunky dialogue and an often-absurd storyline, at its core, it was enjoyable fun that packed a relevant message about sexism in the military. Moore showcased intense commitment to her role as Lt. O’Neil and, in the process, Moore gave one of her very best performances . While it does not have a true story behind it like Megan Leavey , the messaging at the heart of G.I. Jane was very real.

6 Zero Dark Thirty (2012)

Zero dark thirty explored the hunt to take down al-qaeda, zero dark thirty.

From Academy Award-Winning director Kathryn Bigelow, Zero Dark Thirty is a fictionalized dramatization of the manhunt for Osama bin Laden after the September 11th attacks. Jessica Chastain stars as Maya Harris, a CIA analyst tasked with locating bin Laden in order for the US Government to assassinate him. Jason Clarke, Joel Edgerton, and Mark Strong also star.

Megan Leavey told the individual story of one soldier's experiences in the Iraq war while Zero Dark Thirty was a broader look at the Al-Qaeda terrorist network and the international manhunt for Osama bin Laden . As a depiction of the military raid, codenamed Operation Neptune Spear, where bin Laden was shot and killed on May 2, 2011, by US Navy SEALs, Zero Dark Thirty was a suspenseful portrayal of a major moment in the history of U.S. conflicts with the Middle East. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, Zero Dark Thirty followed up the conflict themes of her previous film The Hurt Locker .

Zero Dark Thirty , like Megan Leavey , also homed in on the female experience of those embroiled in conflict through the fictional character of Maya (Jessica Chastain), a CIA intelligence analyst who was instrumental in tracking al-Qaeda and bin Laden. The character of Maya was a composite of many who were involved the Operation Neptune Spear , although she was in part modeled after Alfreda Frances Bikowsky (via The New Yorker .) While Zero Dark Thirty changed many things from the true story , it remained an intense war movie about a major moment in the history of conflict.

5 A Private War (2018)

A private war showcased a female journalist's incredible determination.

The Military Police K9 handler Megan Leavey worked for the US Marine Corps in her fight against war and injustice while journalist Marie Colvin used her pen to highlight the horrors of war . The story of the American foreign affairs correspondent Colvin was told in A Private War , where she was depicted by Rosamund Pike in an exceptional performance that brought depth and nuance to her true story. Following Colvin’s experiences covering stories in the most dangerous conflict zones on the planet, A Private War was an account of one woman’s unstoppable determination.

Like in Megan Leavey , Colvin in A Private War encountered traumatic experiences and even lost her eye after being ambushed by the Sri Lankan Army, which led to her wearing her signature eyepatch. A highly engrossing biopic to an awe-inspiring woman, A Private War showcased the sacrifices that journalists on the frontline of conflict have made and was one of Pike’s very best performances. Unlike Megan Leavey , Colvin did not survive and sadly met her end in the conflict in Syria , but A Private War acted as a fitting tribute to all that her incredible coverage achieved.

4 Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (2016)

Whiskey tango foxtrot was a more comedic look at middle eastern conflicts, whiskey tango foxtrot.

While Whiskey Tango Foxtrot was based on a true story, it leaned more heavily into the comedic side of those who entered the conflict in the Middle East than Megan Leavey did. With a strong lead performance by Tina Fey as Kim Baker, a cable news reporter sent to Afghanistan, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot adapted Kim Barker’s memoir The Taliban Shuffle to produce a movie that balanced comedy with real-life experiences. With supporting performances from Margot Robbie and Billy Bob Thorton, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot highlighted cultural disparities, the challenges for women in Islamic society, and the difficulties of adapting to these changes.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot did receive some criticism for its predictable screenplay, but the performances and messaging of the film helped balance its faults to deliver on its seldom-told story of women in war zones. With a sharp, satirical, eye cast toward the conflict in Afghanistan, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot started highly comedic and grew in seriousness as throughout its runtime . An underrated war film, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot would definitely appeal to those who enjoyed Megan Leavey .

3 The Stopover (2016)

The stopover showcased three women’s wartime struggles.

The French language movie The Stopover , much like Megan Leavey , highlighted the experience of female soldiers who had faced conflict in the Middle East. However, instead of telling the individual story of one woman, The Stopover focused on three women returning from a tour of duty in Afghanistan. A highly acclaimed war movie, the sister writing and directing duo Delphine and Muriel Coulin won the award for Best Screenplay in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival for The Stopover .

With a setting in a luxurious beach hotel in Cyprus , The Stopover depicted its soldiers in a moment of respite from the psychological effects of war , which included group therapy sessions that brought the troubling experiences of the characters to the forefront. With building tension, The Stopover showcased that horrible experiences were not just limited to conflict zones, as they faced sexual assault at the hands of their comrades. A disturbing look at the brutality shown toward women in the military, The Stopover was an effective story that highlighted relevant topics.

2 Thank You For Your Service (2017)

Thank you for your service highlighted soldiers' ptsd, thank you for your service.

The difficulties of trying to adjust to civilian life after having faced extraordinary circumstances in conflict zones united Thank You for Your Service and Megan Leavey . Based on a non-fiction book by Washington Post reporter David Finkel, Thank You for Your Service highlighted a soldier named Adam Schumann who returned from a harrowing 15-month combat tour in Iraq. With a strong lead performance by Miles Teller, Thank You for Your Service addressed PDTS among returning combat veterans and the nightmares and flashbacks their experiences brought up.

A sobering account of the emotional impact of war, Schumann, much like Leavey, struggled to rebuild himself after leaving Iraq. Thank You For Your Service focused on realism and was an unflinching look at just how difficult it can be for veterans to reintegrate into society after having been institutionalized and transformed by their wartime experiences. While the anti-war message of Thank You for Your Service often came across as heavy-handed , it was still an effective war movie that deserved more attention.

1 Max (2015)

Max was a powerful look at extraordinary military dogs.

Both Megan Leavey and the adventure war drama Max effectively dealt with military dogs and the intense bonds that they formed with their handlers to produce films that packed a serious emotional punch. However, while Megan Leavey explored a woman’s quest to be reunited with her canine companion, Max involved the family who were tasked with adopting their deceased son’s former animal comrade and military dog named Max. An extraordinary account of finding connection and solace for those who were gone through new connections, Max was a sentimental look at how a good dog can change somebody’s life.

The military dog Max , much like Rex in Megan Leavey , suffered PTSD from his wartime experience.

The military dog Max , much like Rex in Megan Leavey , suffered PTSD from his wartime experience, but gradually learned to carve out a friendship with Justin, the younger brother of his former handler. While Max can be criticized for its disjointed plot or emotionally manipulative moments , its story of heroism at the hands of the hound was a heartwarming tale that could be enjoyed by the entire family. For those wishing to follow up Megan Leavey with another story of war-serving dogs deployed to Iraq, look no further than Max .

‘The Greatest Hits’: Save your time

A time-travel romance falls victim to generic characters and clunky dialogue.

You know how a pop song from a moment in your past can bring that moment back to life in colors, smells, memories and emotions? “The Greatest Hits” takes that idea and literalizes it right into the ground.

The film is one of those romantic fantasies that enlists time travel as the primary obstacle keeping two people from getting together. Make that one of the obstacles; the others in “The Greatest Hits” are the heroine’s growing collection of vinyl records and her habit of wearing noise-canceling headphones wherever she goes. The course of true love never did run smooth.

Harriet (Lucy Boynton) is mourning the loss of her boyfriend Max (David Corenswet) in a car crash that also delivered a bonk to her noggin that allows her to whoosh back in time — but only when she hears a song that triggers a moment the couple had together. Thus the headphones; otherwise, the tunes streaming from supermarket speakers and other people’s car radios would have her constantly yo-yoing back and forth between then and now. The records she’s obsessively collecting are an effort to find the one song that might give her a chance to alter events and keep Max alive.

Does any of this make sense? Of course not. Time-travel romantic fantasy movies never make sense, and when they’re done right, that’s the source of their idiot charm. 2006’s “The Lake House,” which involves Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock and a magic mailbox, is a personal gold standard in this regard.

Complicating matters is that Harriet has met a cute guy at a grief counseling support group — that sentence alone announces we’re in Los Angeles — and is hesitant to open up and tell him about the whole trying-to-change-the-flow-of-history thing. David, who has lost both parents to either separate illnesses or just plain carelessness, is played by Justin H. Min, a likable actor who was the sensitive android of the little-seen “After Yang” (2022), a movie that you would be strongly advised to watch instead of this one.

What would it take to make “The Greatest Hits” work? For one thing, a music-rights budget that allowed for songs an average filmgoer might recognize, rather than tracks from the back 40 of Spotify or a disco remix of Roxy Music’s “To Turn You On.” For another, a script that avoids dialogue clunkers like “There’s a reason that in some languages, the word for love and the word for suffering is the same.” (I Googled it — didn’t find any.) Shopworn supporting stereotypes like the heroine’s sassy gay Black friend (Austin Crute) don’t help.

The prime offender, though, is writer-director Ned Benson’s inability to create three-dimensional characters, or even believable two-dimensional ones. Harriet is apparently a record producer, but we only know that from one dated reference to Alan Parsons and a brief scene of her telling singer Nelly Furtado to “add a little more compression on the drums”; otherwise, she’s an attractive blank space that Boynton strains too hard to fill in. The dead boyfriend, Max, is even more generic — a genial himbo with all the flavor of a catalogue model.

Benson made a stir with his debut, a three-film project called “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby” (2014) that looked at a relationship from his, her and their points of view. His belated follow-up, by contrast, has barely enough personality for one. But he gets points for including the dreadful Kars4Kids jingle as one of the audio jogs that sends Harriet tumbling back in time — for a brief moment, the rest of “The Greatest Hits” seems much less irritating in comparison.

PG-13. Streaming on Hulu. Drug use, strong language and suggestive material. 94 minutes.

A woman in the middle of the woods stands with a look of concern.

By Elisabeth Vincentelli

Rent or buy it on most major platforms.

In 2021, this column featured a Canadian movie about multiverses called “Parallel.” Now here comes an American movie about multiverses called “Parallel,” based on a Chinese movie about multiverses called “Parallel Forest.” Déjà vu all over again?

The greatest asset of Kourosh Ahari’s “Parallel” is the wonderful Danielle Deadwyler (“Till”), who confirms she can not only suggest depths of psychic pain but also throw herself into a part’s physical demands. Tormented by her child’s death, Vanessa is trying to get away from her thoughts at an idyllic lakeside house with her husband, Alex, and his brother, Martel (played by the real-life siblings Aldis and Edwin Hodge, who also co-wrote the film with Jonathan Keasey). Out for a walk in the woods, Vanessa narrowly avoids being shot — by a woman who looks just like her. Discrepancies begin to pop up in what she thought she knew about her own life; Alex and Martel’s behavior and even their very identities become unpredictable, to the point that she’s never quite sure who she’s talking to. The movie can be confusing as the parallel realities become ever more complex, but it eventually coalesces into a poignant tale about the stories we tell ourselves in order to deal with traumatic events.

‘Dream Scenario’

Stream it on Max.

Aggressively average, Paul Matthews is an evolutionary biologist stuck on the academic ladder and watching, with bitter, powerless envy, some of his peers take off. This sounds like the premise for a Paul Giamatti vehicle, but the central role of “Dream Scenario” is played by Nicolas Cage, who brings completely different baggage to the story. Paul, you see, acquires viral fame when he starts popping up in people’s dreams. He is recognized everywhere he goes and while he has zero control about his starring role in people’s unconscious, he still becomes a living meme — a familiar experience for Cage, a frequent subject of memes rather than dreams. Kristoffer Borgli’s surreal dark comedy can be read as a meta commentary on fame, particularly that of Cage himself. Seen from a science-fiction perspective, however, the casting is a red herring and the movie becomes a disturbing description of invasive marketing campaigns and, down the line, direct mind control. Borgli parallels this vision with a concomitant one of destructive herd mentality, and how easy it is for a mob to form. The combination of those two strains truly is the stuff nightmares are made of.

‘Extraneous Matter: Complete Edition’

One random day, a strange life form turns up in the bedroom closet of a young woman (Kaoru Koide). We don’t know the nature of the creature or how it got in there, only that it seems to have just one thing in mind, and it’s not killing earthlings, for a change. Be warned that Ken’ichi Ugana’s film is not for the prude or the squeamish, as its first of four sections features abundant sex of the tentacled, polymorphous kind. The special effects are primitive, almost defiantly so — at times “Extraneous Matter: Complete Edition” made me think of an unlikely papier-mâché hybrid of “Little Shop of Horrors” and Andrzej Zulawski’s classic “Possession” — but oddly this makes them more effective, not less. The creatures are especially striking as a lo-fi counterpoint to human characters plagued with anomie and aimlessness. As the film (which was extended from a 2020 short, as its title indicates) progresses, it’s obvious that what Ugana is really concerned with is the unbearable loneliness imposed by modern living, and our inability to connect with others. What a true oddity this project is.

‘Time Addicts’

Australian dirtbag cinema tends to be set in the outback, but there are exceptions: Sam Odlum’s movie takes place in Melbourne. The foul-mouthed, rather dim Johnny (Charles Grounds) and his slightly sharper friend Denise (Freya Tingley) are addicts so desperate for a hit that they agree to do a job for their dealer, Kane (Joshua Morton): They’ll retrieve a bag of crystal meth left in a derelict house, with strict instructions not to sample the goods. Except, of course, Johnny does, and poof — he is whisked back to 1995.

The contraband “temporal narcotic” allows Johnny to hopscotch back and forth through the decades, both past and future (Melbourne in 2053, we are told, is barely livable). In short order, Denise follows him in time-traveling escapades and the pair crisscross timelines, meeting the undercover cop Tracey (Elise Jansen) along the way. The best part, besides the imaginative variations on a certain curse word, is the detective work required of the viewer to follow the trail of visual and aural cues that Odlum spreads throughout the film. Rest assured they do tie up in the end.

Stream it on Netflix.

The Japanese director Makoto Shinkai is regularly hailed as one of the modern masters of animation, and this dense, action-packed film helps show why (even if newcomers to his world might want to start with “Your Name, ” from 2017).

When the high school student Suzume finds herself in front of a door that seems to float on a lake, little does she realize the responsibility she is about to inherit: The door is one of several such portals throughout Japan that could let out a gigantic earthquake-causing energy worm, and Suzume must find them and close them. She is helped by the handsome Souta — handsome, that is, until a cat transforms him into a talking three-legged chair. Let’s just say that few directors besides Shinkai (and Hayao Miyazaki, to whom he is often compared) could pull off a central character consisting of a chair jabbering as it cavorts around the countryside.

A breathless sense of adventure courses through the visually stunning “Suzume,” which adroitly works both as an allegory for Japan’s life under the constant threat of earthquakes and as a coming-of-age story that is graceful and often funny. But it also acknowledges death looming over our lives.

‘The Greatest Hits’ Ending Explained: What Is the Missing Song?

Stream It Or Skip It: ‘The Greatest Hits’ on Hulu, a High-Concept Sci-fi Romance Starring Lucy Boynton as a Very Sad Time Traveler

When will ‘the greatest hits’ movie be on hulu how to stream the lucy boynton movie, is ‘chevalier’ based on a true story, woman crush wednesday: look out for lucy boynton in ‘the pale blue eye’.

The Greatest Hits on Hulu—which began streaming today— is a movie with a fascinating concept. Many of us have experienced a pang of nostalgia or been reminded of a memory when we hear a certain song. The Greatest Hits takes that a step further. What if certain songs could literally pull you back into the past?

That’s the conundrum faced by the protagonist of The Greatest Hits , a woman who finds herself time-traveling into her past to visit her now-dead boyfriend. Written and directed by Ned Benson ( The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby ), the movie stars American-English actor Lucy Boynton, who you may know from her roles in 2016’s Sing Street and 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody .

But though the initial concept of The Greatest Hits is fascinating, the actual execution of the plot is a bit murky. Time travel plots are notoriously confusing, after all. If you got lost along the way, don’t worry: Decider is here to help. Read on for an analysis of The Greatest Hit s plot summary and The Greatest Hits ending explained, including what the missing song in The Greatest Hits movie is.

The Greatest Hits movie plot summary:

We meet Harriet (Lucy Boynton) on the two-year anniversary of the death of her boyfriend, Max (David Corenswet). Harriet loves music and worked as a music producer before Max died in a fatal car crash. Since Max’s death, Harriet has discovered that certain songs cause her to literally time travel back to a time in her relationship with Max when they first heard the song together. But no matter how many times Harriet puts on the song that was playing on the day of the car crash, and travels back to that moment, she can’t convince Max to pull over the car to prevent the crash.

Because Harriet can’t control when she might hear a song that pulls her into the past, she wears earplugs and headphones when she’s out in public. She’s also searching for a specific “missing song” that she can’t remember the name of, but she believes it will take her back to the exact right time to prevent the car crash and save Max. Her best friend Morris (Austin Crute) urges her to let go of the past and live in the present, but Harriet can’t… until she meets a new guy named David (Justin H. Min).

Harriet meets David at a grief support group. David recently lost both of his parents. Despite his sister’s pleas to sell, David is determined to keep running his parents’ antique shop as a way to keep their memory alive. When they meet, David is immediately enamored with Harriet and asks her out on a date. They have a nice time, even though David thinks it’s a little weird that Harriet keeps her headphones on the entire time for a “medical condition,” and that she runs out on him when she hears a song that pulls her into the past. Nevertheless, Harriet tries to make the new relationship work.

After David witnesses Harriet pass out from a time-travel spell, she tries to explain her situation. He doesn’t believe her. Later, when David brings Harriet to his parents’ antique shop, she realizes she’s been there before. She rifles through his parents’ old records until she finds an album cover she recognizes, and realizes it’s the “missing song.” She promises David she will be able to prove to him that the time travel is real, and asks him where the best hiding spot in the shop is. He tells her that it’s an old school desk.

What is the missing song in The Greatest Hits movie?

Harriet puts on the song—Mozart’s Fantasia in D Minor—and travels back to a day when she visited the antique shop with Max. It’s the day of the car crash, when Max bought a chair from the antique shop, and it’s the moment when Harriet believes she can save his life. But no matter what Harriet says to Max, she can’t convince him not to buy the chair. She gives up and decides to use her remaining time—the length of the song—writing a note to David. She leaves the note in the school desk, and returns to the present-day. Present-day David finds the note, and finally believes Harriet.

David and Harriet continue to try to have a normal relationship. But after Harriet is thrust into the past yet again—courtesy of that infamous earworm jingle for “Kars 4 Kids”—she realizes she can’t spend the rest of her life this way. So she comes up with a plan.

The Greatest Hits ending explained:

As Harriet explains to David, she can’t seem to change anyone else’s behavior when she time travels—but she can change her own behavior. She decided to travel back to the day she first met Max at a music festival, and make the decision that will cause her to never have a relationship with him. This also means that she might never meet David, too. Before she goes, she and David promise to look for each other in the new timeline.

Harriet travels back in time to the music festival where she first met Max, and this time, she declines to follow him into the crowd. As a result, she and Max never date. We flash forward to the present day in the new timeline, where it’s revealed that Harriet seems to remember nothing from her other life. She sees Max in a coffee shop with another woman but does not recognize him. In the final scene of the movie, Harriet ends up standing next to David at a concert. Although they don’t remember their other life together, both of them seem to experience a spark of recognition. Or maybe it’s just interest.

Either way, the movie ends with the implication that although it won’t be the same story, Harriet and David have found each other and will be together in this timeline. So there you have it! Everything that you watched on screen was undone in the last ten minutes of the film. It’s bittersweet, to say the least. It’s not explained whether David’s parents still die, and if they do, whether he is still able to let go of the antique shop and move on from their deaths—a realization that Harriet’s struggle with grief helped him achieve. It’s a teensy bit of a plot hole!

But at least Harriet won’t have to spend the rest of her life being literally yanked into the past by music. That’s good!

The tech experts and engineers at the Good Housekeeping Institute test all types of home cinema equipment, from theater-like home projectors to the best TVs , outdoor speakers and more. Ahead you'll find our pros' favorite outdoor projectors to get before summer is over, based on extensive testing in the Media & Tech Lab as well as rave feedback from our at-home testers.

Once you’ve checked out the best outdoor projectors, don’t forget to consider these budget projectors under $500.

This projector from Anker tops our list thanks to its versatile, portable design that makes it super easy to host a movie night practically anywhere with a screen. It features a built-in rechargeable battery that delivers up to three hours of power on a single charge — plenty of juice for most feature films. Plus, the 120-inch screen size should be large enough for comfortable viewing and our tech experts love that there are several ways to project content, including casting from your Android or iOS device or streaming through a laptop via the HDMI connection. Also notable is that the projector uses Google TV for easy access to all your favorite streaming apps.

While this model doesn't get quite as bright as some projectors, our testers love that it comes with built-in speakers and a projector stand to help you get set up outside without having to carry around additional equipment. Other online reviewers rave about the projector's ease of use, value and overall quality.

Outdoor movie nights don't have to cost you a fortune! Our experts like this bargain-priced projector that offers many of the same features as much pricier models, including full HD 1080p resolution and a massive 200-inch image size. With more than 6,500 reviews on Amazon and an average 4.4-star rating, it's hard to go wrong. Just keep in mind that it doesn't feature built-in Wi-Fi so it's not the best choice for movie nights in the park (we recommend staying within range of your home's Wi-Fi network).

While we haven't yet tested this model in the Lab, several online consumers single out the projector's bright picture quality and solid sound from the pair of built-in speakers. We also appreciate that it's versatile when it comes to connectivity, whether you want to hook up your smartphone, laptop or streaming stick.

While movie buffs will find plenty to like about this ViewSonic projector, backyard gamers and sports fans will especially appreciate its low lag time and zippy refresh rate that make it ideal for projecting action-packed images. The resolution is exceptionally crisp and the 3,500-lumen brightness holds up even when there’s still some light left in the night sky. Last but not least, the image size can go as high as 300 inches, so the crowd of onlookers won’t miss any of the gaming action. Just keep in mind that a power cable is required to power the projector, and Bluetooth or Wi-Fi aren't built-in.

Serious cinephiles insist on best-in-show picture quality, even when watching their favorite features in the open air. These days, 4K takes the prize, as you’ll experience with Anker's portable projector. Though it's heavy, it features a built-in handle so you can move it from your living room to your outdoor space with little to no hassle.

Our product analysts were impressed by the screen's impressive brightness on top of the sharp 4K resolution. We also like that it uses Android TV 10 to give you access to the most popular streaming platforms, but it's just as easy to cast from your phone. Our pros do point out, however, that you'll have to keep this projector plugged into an outlet as it doesn't run off of standalone batteries.

About the same size as the average smartphone, this super lightweight projector couldn’t be easier to transport. Our pros love that it features a built-in battery that should last around two hours so you don’t always need access to an outlet, but if it dies you can just connect it to a power bank. We also like that the projector is operated by Android TV so you can easily access all your favorite streaming platforms like Disney+ and Hulu on its large, 120-inch screen. Plus, its 1080p resolution is impressive for its size.

Our test engineer, who tested a similar XGIMI model, appreciated the projector's automatic focus and keystone correction. "I used it with a projector screen, and it automatically found the projector screen and adjusted to fit its size," says GH Test Engineer Alec Scherma . Another bonus: speakers are built-in. "You could literally use this instead of a TV, we played indoors — outdoors on a screen it was really great," raved one tester.

a projector screen with a projector and speakers

A Family Travel Awards Winner , this mini projector is a must-have for road trips, camping vacations and entertainment on the go. Weighing less than a pound, its ultra-compact design easily makes it one of the most portable projectors around. Our pros love how easy it is to mirror content from your smartphone or laptop up to 150 inches , thanks to the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.

Though the resolution could be better, we love that you don't always need the projector's charging cable on you since it has a built-in battery that lasts around an hour. Not only does this projector include a handy remote, but it's powered by Android so you can access your favorite streaming apps without having to grab your phone.

"I like the size and portability of the projector, along with the picture quality," said one tester, who used it during a family vacation outdoor movie night. "The sleek design is also an added bonus."

a screen with a game on it

Even tech-challenged users should find the Mars II Pro easy to operate. For starters, the Nebula app allows you to turn your smartphone into a remote control for the projector. You can then easily mirror content from your phone onto the screen , with its maximum image size of 100 inches. If you prefer, you can also use the USB and HDMI connections to hook the projector up to any compatible laptop, tablet or gaming device.

The carry handle is a nice design touch that highlights the projector’s user-friendliness and portability. If you're looking for a slightly more affordable alternative that's super compact and even easier to transport, our pros also like the Anker Nebula Capsule (just don't expect the same image quality and brightness as you'll get with the Mars II Pro).

How we test the best outdoor projectors

line break

Our product experts start by surveying the current marketplace to identify the best outdoor projectors that you’re most likely to find at stores and online. We also attend trade shows and industry events, like the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) to stay on top of the latest innovations in home entertainment technology. Next, we identify brands that have performed the best and proved the most reliable through more than a decade of testing at the Good Housekeeping Institute . We also consider newer brands with unique features or innovations.

To test the best outdoor projectors, our pros logged dozens of hours of viewing time to assess ease of use, picture quality and audio quality on close to two dozen projectors. Our product experts also spent more than 20 hours reviewing product specs, technical data and user manuals.

Based on our expertise built up over years of testing A/V equipment, we focused on models that meet specific technical requirements, for example, 1080p resolution, which our tests have found delivers better picture quality than the 720p found on some outdoor projectors. We also looked for models that deliver at least 2000 lumens, since a brighter picture is needed for outside viewing. Lastly, we reviewed each projector for ease of setup, intuitiveness of its controls, media interface, ports, battery life and more.

Whenever possible, we sent testers home with projectors to try in their own backyards and outdoor spaces, sharing feedback on their experience, the projector's image and sound quality, portability and more.

What to look for when shopping for an outdoor projector

linebreak

Keep these factors in mind as you shop for an outdoor projector:

✔️ Connectivity: Think about where your content will come from. If your home’s Wi-Fi signal is strong enough to reach outside, you can connect the projector to a laptop, Blu-ray player or streaming stick via USB or HDMI. Adding a mesh network to your home's Wi-Fi can help extend the signal outdoors. Alternatively, you may need to look for a model with built-in Wi-Fi, sometimes referred to as all-in-one or one-box systems.

✔️ Power source: Some outdoor projectors have built-in batteries, eliminating the need for power cords, but most need to be plugged in. The safest practice is to have an outdoor outlet installed by a professional; its ground fault circuit interrupter (or "GFCI") will protect against electrical hazards. If you must use an extension cord, make sure it's a surge protector rated for outdoor use, and watch out for tripping hazards, especially after nightfall.

✔️ Screen: Sure, you can watch on an old sheet tacked to the side of the house or garage. But for the best viewing experience, invest in a proper projector screen, since brightness and picture quality will be vastly improved. You can find high-quality pop-up screens with their own stands for between $100 and $200. It might be worth spending more on a 4K-rated screen since the technology is becoming more common — even if your current projector doesn't feature it, your next one might.

✔️ Screen size: Screen size is critical since there’s likely to be a large crowd gathered around and much less than 100 inches will start to feel small and cramped. You also want to make sure the screen size is the right shape, which is usually measured by aspect ratio (16:9 is the norm for outdoor projectors).

✔️ Throw distance : This is the distance between the projector and the screen. Standard throw projectors need to be about 10 feet from the screen, while short throw projectors can be placed a couple of feet or closer to the screen, which can be helpful in tight outdoor spaces.

✔️ Brightness: Brightness is important because even on a moonless night it’s not going to be pitch black out there. Brightness is measured in lumens: Between 2,000 and 2,500 lumens should provide adequate brightness in most outdoor settings. If there's a lot of competing light from street lamps or the neighbor's house, you might want to go as high as 3,000. One important note: Some manufacturers use ANSI lumens, which are proportionally brighter than standard lumens. For example, if you see a projector with 900 ANSI lumens, that's generally comparable to 2,200 standard lumens.

✔️ Resolution : This is the overall picture quality, measured in pixels (p). For a satisfactory outdoor viewing experience, you want a minimum of 720p. A resolution of 1080p is even better. Or go big on 4K, which delivers exceptional picture quality but at an extremely high price.

✔️ Sound/audio source: Onboard built-in speakers are helpful, though you’ll probably want to spend on separate speakers, given all the ambient outdoor sounds. Bluetooth-enabled speakers are a good option, including smart speakers like Amazon Echo , Apple HomePod and Google Nest Audio that can double as digital assistants.

✔️ Portability: Since you’ll be bringing the projector inside and out, look for one that’s lightweight and easy to transport. A built-in projector stand to adjust the angle of projection is a helpful feature, especially if you plan on traveling with it.
