High Hopes for Trek-Segafredo in 2019

trek segafredo 2019

At our December training camp – the start of preparations for 2019 – several of our riders sat down with Cyclingnews  to talk about their hopes and aspirations for the new season.

Ellen van Dijk, who took the time trial world title in 2013, has a wide skillset and will be a strong addition to the new Trek-Segafredo Women’s Team. When asked about her main goals for the upcoming season van Dijk said:  “Normally, I am focusing on the Classics and team time trialling and time trialling. Also, I want to be an important team player, setting up a sprint or closing a gap but next year I want to be really good in the Spring.”

Whilst we don’t expect to see Lizzie Deignan competing in the upcoming Spring Classics campaign after giving birth late last year, the team can count on many other riders with big Classics wins to their names, including Ellen van Dijk and Elisa Longo Borghini, who have both won the revered Tour of Flanders in 2014 and 2015, respectively. Van Dijk revealed:

We have a really strong Classics team with Elisa. I think that all the riders here can ride a good Classics campaign. I hope that we can have a really good start with the team.

trek segafredo 2019

Likewise, former Italian national champion Elisa Longo Borghini can’t wait to start the season with her new team: “I look to next year with goose bumps. I’m so looking forward to start racing.” For Longo Borghini, it’s the Ardennes Classics that she has her sights firmly set on; “I would like to be in a good condition for the Ardennes because it’s two years now that I’ve missed the condition there and it’s like I have itchy feet.” For the third year, the Women’s WorldTour will feature the triple crown of Ardennes races – Amstel Gold Race, Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège.

She also has high hopes in her home race, the Giro Rosa (Giro d’Italia) after disappointment in 2018. “I would like to be good there [at the Giro]. This doesn’t mean that I’ll win the Giro, but I want to be in my best shape and play the game instead of suffering there.”

Lizzie Deignan, who won the World Championship road race in 2015, was the first rider announced for the team back at the Tour de France in July . Deignan will be targeting the second half of the season, including the World Championships on her local roads in Yorkshire. The last year has been a big change for her, but certainly a positive one:

I really love it again. It feels like I'm starting all over again. When I'm out on the bike, I feel like a junior again and that's really exciting.

trek segafredo 2019

The men’s team has made several exciting signings for 2019 to strengthen both the Classics squad as well as general classification hopes. The most notable addition is Richie Porte who is expected to lead the team at the Tour de France. Meanwhile, Bauke Mollema’s ambitions will shift to the Giro d’Italia: “That’s my big goal for the first part of the season. I’ve only done it twice; my first Grand Tour and last year, where I finished seventh.”

Now, I’m even more motivated to do it. I even asked the team to go to the Giro myself. The team was not expecting that I would want to go, but I asked them. I’m really looking forward to going back to it.

The course suits me well. There are three TTs but they are all pretty hard with climbs and the first and last ones are quite short also and the long one has a steep climb in the middle. It’s not really a TT for the flat specialists, it’s for the climbers who can do a good TT.”

2021 team preview: Trek-Segafredo

US-registered team faces a season of transition as Nibali ages and Pedersen and Simmons mature

Vincenzo Nibali leads Trek-Segafredo

Bike brand Trek and Italian coffee maker Segafredo joined forces in 2016, with Trek deciding to directly own and control the team after long spells backing other teams, including Lance Armstrong’s various squads.

Under the guidance of Italian manager Luca Guercilena the team has grown to include the hugely successful women’s Trek-Segafredo team that shares staff and resources, creating one of the most equal, integrated and forward-looking teams in professional cycling.

Vincenzo Nibali came onboard in 2019, joining Richie Porte and Bauke Mollema as Grand Tour leaders, while Mads Pedersen , Jasper Stuyven and Edward Theuns created the backbone of the Classics squad.

Quinn Simmons and Giulio Ciccone represent the future but the team is in need of some high-profile signings if it is to stay competitive at WorldTour level in the years ahead.

How did they fare in 2020?

Wins:  9

WorldTour ranking:  eighth

Trek-Segafredo had another solid but not spectacular season in 2020, winning nine races and finishing third at the Tour de France with Richie Porte. Styven won Omloop Het Nieuwsblad before the lockdown and Pedersen won Gent-Wevelgem in October but they were not one of the stand-out teams in the men’s WorldTour and failed to win a stage in a Grand Tour.

Porte has endured a roller coaster career and was deposed as the main Grand Tour leader when Nibali arrived in 2019, but he left Trek-Segafredo on a high with his third place at the Tour de France and second overall victory at the Tour Down Under. He was perhaps never a threat to Tadej Pogacar and Primoz Roglic in France but he was far better than the rest and deserved his podium glory in Paris.

Trek-Segafredo were on a roll in the early spring after defeating Mitchelton-Scott in Australia but then struggled immediately after the lockdown, only winning a stage at the Tour de Pologne and the BinckBank Tour. Simmons went close at the Tour de Hongrie but his inappropriate comments on social media lead to a suspension from racing and he missed his debut in the Classics.

Fortunately, Pedersen stepped up to win Gent-Wevelgem as Mathieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert raced against each other. Pedersen was tactically perfect and produced a sumptuous ride, combining brains with brawn before dispatching his final rivals in the sprint finish.

Nibali led Trek-Segafredo in the Giro d’Italia but was unable to compete with Tao Geoghean Hart, Jai Hindley and Wilco Kelderman in the final week and slipped to seventh overall. He insisted his numbers were as good as ever but as a generational changed occurred in the peloton, the 36-year-old Italian was left behind.

Vincenzo Nibali : Lo Squalo di Messina may have lost some of his bite and is in his last year of his contract, but nobody else at Trek-Segafredo has his pedigree and few riders have a similar Grand Tour pedigree, with overall victories in all three races.

Nibali and his coach Paolo Slongo are convinced the intensity of the rescheduled 2020 season and the decision to race a series of one-day races in Italy in August undermined his performance in the Giro d’Italia. Nibali does not appear to have lost his hunger and is reportedly planning to ride the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France in 2021 as he takes aim at the Tokyo Olympics. He will likely share leadership and expectation with Ciccone at the corsa rosa and then target stages in France.

The results of 2021 will influence Nibali’s plans for a final swansong 2022 season that could be at Trek-Segafredo or elsewhere, perhaps even Ineos Grenadiers.

Giulio Ciccone : Italy expects Ciccone to fill the gap left by Nibali and the friendly rider from Abruzzo seems to have the ability and character to be Italy’s next Grand Tour contender.

He came down with COVID-19 in the weeks before the Giro d’Italia and so was unable to show his true ability, but he has been promised a leadership role in 2021 which could even be at the Giro d’Italia. Time trialling remains a weakness but Ciccone’s aggression and love for racing means he is also already one of the tifosi ’s favourites and Nibali’s heir apparent.

Mads Pedersen : The 2019 world champion’s credentials were questioned when he first raced in the rainbow jersey but Pedersen proved his class by winning Gent-Wevelgem with a show of tactical nous and a fast finish. He is still only 25 and so will surely continue to improve and win on the cobbles.

Quinn Simmons : The former junior world champion is one of the biggest talents in the peloton and logically turned professional at 18 to fast track his career.

He looked on track for a excellent debut Classics campaign after training hard at home in Colorado during the summer lockdown and then going close to overall victory in Hungary. However his social media posts led to Trek-Segafredo suspending him for the rest of the season and describing his online statements as “divisive, incendiary, and detrimental to the team, professional cycling, its fans, and the positive future we hope to help create for the sport”.

The use of a black emoji by a white person online has been highlighted as racist, but Simmons insisted he did not mean it to be.

"I would like to apologize to everyone who found this offensive as I strongly stand against racism in any form," the 19-year-old said in a team statement. "To anyone who disagrees with me politically, that is fine. I won’t hate you for it. I only ask the same."

Trek-Segafredo are one of the best organised teams in the WorldTour and a role model for how the leading teams should run equal men’s and women’s programmes.

The team is well-run, well supported by experienced staff and professional cycling would be a far better sport if every other team was at Trek-Segafredo’s level.

The men’s roster includes some of best riders in the peloton, with a solid core of other rider of different qualities and abilities. Bauke Mollema is a quality altenrative leader that can perform in Grand Tourts and win Il Lombardia. Toms Skujiņš is an eclectic winner, while Koen de Kort, Kiel Reijnen and Kenny Elissonde are the engine room riders every team would love to have in their roster.

The team also has a good track record of developing young talent. Matteo Moschetti looks set to be Italy’s next great sprinter, while Nicola Conci, Niklas Eg, Juan Pedro López and neo-pro Antonio Tiberi are all names to remember.

With Nibali now 36, Mollema 34 and Porte opting to step down to a domestique role with Ineos Grenadiers, Trek-Segafredo only has Ciccone as a future team leader for the Grand Tours and will surely be forced to pursue a major signing for 2022, leading to a major change in their roster rather than gradual development. That means 2021 will mark the end of a cycle, which could end on a Grand Tour high but will more likely end on a low.

Several rival team managers are openly envious of Trek-Segafredo’s budget and maliciously suggest they sometimes fail to live up to expectations.

In theory, major results should be the logical consequence of the solid team structure. Often they are, but occassionally Trek-Segafredo fall into a lean spell and struggle against their own aspirations and are unable to compete against major rivals Deceuninck-QuickStep, Ineos Grenadiers and Jumbo-Visma.

In truth, no team appears to have the budget, organisation and roster to dominate in both the Classics and Grand Tours. Perhaps Trek-Segafredo should choose a single goal, focus more resources on recruiting a big-name team leader and forget about trying to cover all the bases.

TREK SEGAFREDO 2019

Home   >   year index   >   2019  >  trek segafredo 2019, about the design.

For the 2019 season Trek Segafredo have deviated somewhat from their established design brief of previous seasons. The 2019 Trek Segafredo kit has a retro feel much like pevious Lotto Soudal kits. The torso of the jersey is red with a white band across the chest and rear of the jersey. The sides and sleeves are black with the introduction of 2 thin white bands on the ends of each sleeve. A thin white band is also used on the collar of the jersey. The logos are placed on the shoulders and upper chest, rendered in white on the red. The Trek and Segafredo logos are rendered on the white in black and red across the white chest band. The Segafredo logos are rendered also present on the black sides and black sleeves. New sponsor Splunk have their logo rendered on the sleeves and on the back of the bibshorts.

The bibshorts are black with the two white bands on the leg ends duplicated on the sleeve ends of the jerseys. With the manufacturer Santini's name on each leg end. As in previous seasons the training kit is high vis yellow. The red sections are substituted with hi vis yellow. The logos are rendered in black on the high vis sections while the white band across the chest is substituted for a black band with the main sponsore Trek and Segafredo rendered in white.

The kit uses Dyneema strip fibres, which are 15 times stronger than steel. This can cut down on abrasions from crashes by being more tear resistant.

Santini produced a special kit honouring Richie Porte and the Tour Down Under. The kit's design highlights Richie's Australian roots, the Australian beach life and his love of surfing with each surf board representing one of his major victories.

A white Tour de France edition of the kit was also produced utilising a white based jersey with a red stripe across the front and back where the main sponsors Trek and Segafredo are rendered. A white based cap and gloves were also produced to combat the French summer temperatures in July. The bibshorts remained black as per the standard edition kit.

Trek-Segafredo reveal new men's and women's team kits for 2019 season

The US team sticks to the red and black theme for the men, but go for a smart blue and white for the women

trek segafredo 2019

Trek-Segafredo are the first WorldTour team to unveil their new kits for the 2019 season, presenting an update to the men's outfit and a brand new design for their new women's team.

The US team with it's title sponsors of Trek Bicycles and Italian coffee manufacturer Segafredo have taken on a Women's WorldTour team for the first time, with former world champion Lizzie Deignan headlining the squad.

The men's team continue under the same sponsors for a third season, and their new kit retains the red and black theme, as modelled by German sprinter John Degenkolb.

trek segafredo 2019

Santini provides the kit once again, having taken over from Sportful in 2018. Unlike this year's kit however, which featured an entirely red top, the new kit will feature an altered design with the torso remaining red with black arm and side panels. The sponsor logos on the chest are highlighted with a white panel, with no pinstripes to be seen. The shorts remain black, however lose the grey pinstripe side panels.

Both teams will also have a fluorescent yellow kit to train in, which the team say will make riders safer and "more visible to other road users."

“I really like the new red race kit," said Dutch rider Koen De Kort. "The black bib-shorts are very stylish, and I personally love the sleeves of the kit. I think it will stand out in the peloton and we might take the best-looking kit (again) this year!”

The new women's kit, as modelled by Deignan, and in stark contrast to the men, features a mixture of light blue and dark blues on the torso with white sleeves. The kit features navy blue shorts with white and blue cuffs that feature the Santini logo.

"I’m really excited about the new Trek-Segafredo kit from Santini and can’t wait to start wearing it for training and racing," said Deignan.

"Trek and Santini have done a great job designing something that is both functional and stylish. The team is excited about wearing it because it looks good and it is technically second to none, so it will be brilliant for performance too.”

Trek signs up-and-coming climber Iván Ramiro Sosa

20-year-old colombian will join trek-segafredo in 2019 after two seasons with androni.

Heading out the door? Read this article on the new Outside+ app available now on iOS devices for members! >","name":"in-content-cta","type":"link"}}'>Download the app .

Colombia’s Iván Ramiro Sosa, who has emerged as one of the most promising prospects in cycling over the past year, will ride for Trek-Segafredo next season.

The 20-year-old climber collected the overall win at the Vuelta a Burgos, a stage at the Tour de l’Avenir, and a bevy of other promising results in 2018 while riding with the Androni–Sidermec–Bottecchia organization. His ascension to the WorldTour ranks after two seasons there will mark the second time in as many years that Androni manager Gianni Savio has seen one of his most talented youngsters graduate to cycling’s top division after Egan Bernal jumped to Sky last season.

Sosa will join Trek on a two-year deal, according to the team’s press release.

“I am a man of few words, but I am really, very happy to join Trek-Segafredo as of next year,” Sosa said. “I believe Trek-Segafredo is the perfect team for me, to keep growing and learning. I hope to get some really good results for this team in the years to come.”

Trek manager Luca Guercilena said that the team has had Sosa on its radar for some time now. Sosa’s arrival should inject some youth into a squad that made another big splash this transfer season in signing veteran Richie Porte from BMC.

“Despite his young age, he has proved already to be competitive at a high level. I believe that a part of his racing attitude has been shaped by his current team, that is well known for their aggressive racing,” Guercilena said.

“I am happy that we could find a mutual agreement to give Iván a new opportunity to take the next step in his career, and to develop his talent further at Trek-Segafredo.”

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

trek segafredo 2019

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.
