I have used Tzell Travel several times over the couple of years and couldnt be happier with the service. My girlfriend & I traveled domestically & internationally. Tzell got us great rates on the airfare (even used premium economy on flights to & from Paris) & recommended excellent affordable hotels for those traveling on a modest budget. Even if the agent I was working with was unavailable when I called, Tzell always provided another agent to assist immediately with full records of my planned trip. On a trip from London to Paris, the chunnel was closed due to weather. Tzell answered my emails with pleads for immediate help quickly and efficiently (especially without working intl phone). I am working with them for a trip to SF & Napa right now & will continue to use them in the future. Tzell is always friendly, available, helpful, and often has the best rates (even compared to online) because of their large scale & purchasing power with the airlines/hotels.

Only 3 of my 95 Yelp reviews have been 1 or 2 star My review of Aharon Steinberg of Tzell Travel Group is my 4th 2 star review THE GOOD Aharon connected us with Nadav Kersh, License Israel Tour Guide, and he and our driver were great! The itinerary was very well-designed and organized. If not for that, I would have given 1-star review COMMUNICATION (OR LACK THEREOF) Most (almost all) communications were initiated by me or my friend Alan. There were few updates unless we requested them. Sometimes we'd hear back quickly, other times might take a few days. In many cases, the answer was "I'm working on it" PLANNING On 21 Dec 2021 we contacted Aharon to plan our visit to Israel, the 4th leg of our Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, and Israel trip. Hotels in all the other countries were finalized by March 2022. On 21 Oct 2022 we still didn't have an itinerary, and our tour members were getting nervous. We actually contacted a different travel agency and after reviewing their itinerary saw that Aharon's was better laid out, so decided to give Tzell one last chance to complete the project.. The Israel hotels were finalized on 16 Dec 2022, almost a year after we first asked Aharon to plan our trip, and about a month before we departed. I can't think of any good reason why a travel agent would wait almost 9 months to book hotels since it was likely the rates would have been lowest while the pandemic was still underway. I'm sure that we paid higher rates by not finalizing the Israel hotels in early 2022, My friend Alan said that the Turkey hotels we'd booked in early 2022 were now about 1/3 more expensive. I compared the Istanbul hotel rate we booked in March 2022 for 29 Jan to 4 Feb 2023 to the same dates in 2024, and the cost per night was 36% higher. Alan's estimates were spot on. Here are the costs per person based on double occupancy. We had approximately the same time in each country. Though I can't do a direct comparison since hotel, tour, and guide costs in each country would be different, and we had fewer people on the Israel leg, it looks like the Israel part cost roughly twice that of the other countries. Turkey $2,200 Egypt $2,950 Jordan $2,825 Israel $5,250 PAYMENT Tzell would not accept payment by credit card. I understand that costs them a service fee and it would have been fair to ask us to pay that extra amount. But ... it wasn't possible to pay by credit card. We were required to send a check. It was easy for those of us in the United States. Alan was in Canada and it cost $50 for him to send a bank draft. Alan was told that the envelope never came in. He sent it proof-of-mailing and saw it actually had been signed for by the Tzell receptionist. ATTENTION TO DETAIL Since we didn't know who would be meeting us in Eilat, A few weeks before the trip, I asked for the contact information of the Israeli tour company. The email bounced because of a typo. We finally connected with the guide. THE EXPERIENCE I had recommended Aharon because I know friends in common had arranged their trips with him. I subsequently talked with 3 friends about their experience with him and learned they all had pretty much the same experience that we did. And thus I join the other Yelp reviewers to let others know about our disappointing experiences with Tzell Travel. Ira

If a travel agent's job is to make travel LESS stressful rather than MORE stressful, then I have to give the agent we worked with from this group one star. For starters, she got my name wrong on the air ticket. She fixed that but then, after we provided photos of our passports to her, proceeded to get our birth dates wrong, which made check in more complicated and nerve wracking. She failed to inform us that the hotel was an hour and a half from the airport and never offered to arrange a transfer. Obviously, we won't use her again.

Photo of Chaim L.

We have traveled all over the world with all sorts of travel agencies - from the big luxury international providers to boutique locals - our experience with Tzell travel has been the only one deeply disappointing. It was for a three week tour of China - so there was lots of amazing things to work with - and we hampered them in no way with budget limits and it costs tens of thousands of dollars...and it was just a mediocre experience because of the half-hearted planning and poor guide selections. To be clear, Tzell subcontracted out with Artisans of Leisure...but we still hold Tzell primarily responsible for the experience which, for the cost, was only two star and not luxury other than the hotels we picked and paid for separately. We would never work with Tzell Travel again and would never recommend them to anyone we knew.

Tzell is a collection of independent agents. So I will mention the agent we used, Deborah Mckenna. We recently book a Viking River Cruse with her and she did NOTHING to contribute to the trip. We would have been better off booking directly with Viking. In fact she got in the way because we could no longer talk with Viking directly and had to get her attention to get the information we needed from Viking. I had hoped she would be able to recommend tours we could take in Amsterdam and Budapest, our origin and destination ports. But all she said was say we should contact the concierge in the hotels we were staying at. She did very little to earn the $3,255.48 commission she got from Viking. The reason we know the amount is she accidentally sent us the invoice from Viking that showed the amount of the commission. That shows her level of competence, I am sure this is a no no in the travel busines. I have had good experience with one other agent at Tzell but Deborah is supposed to be the cruse expert. However she contributed nothing to our cruse.

We use Tzell/Astor travel at work and they are the BEST (especially Marie and Donna)- they somehow manage to track seat assignments so that on two different long flights (India, Australia) coworker and I had a an entire middle row to ourselves. They find great prices, are well versed in our office travel policies and are just a pleasure to work with.

Photo of Elizabeth M.

I use Stephanie Roesch and she's great; lots of experience and very accessible. Gets you all the info you need and best prices. You will be pleased..

I just completed a trip using Melissa Lonsk with Tzell. It was my first time using a travel agent, and it will not be my last! We travelled to NYC for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and had such a blast! Melissa gave us multiple hotel choices - all looked great. The one we picked is now my favorite NYC hotel, and we have stayed in a lot of hotels there! The rooms were a great size, the staff friendly and helpful, it was 1/2 a block from the parade route, AND she got our rooms deeply discounted the week of our travel. She consistently checked in to make sure we had no questions or concerns. If you need a travel agent, call Melissa Lonsk!

Tom Schmidt

Tom Schmidt is an elite luxury corporate and leisure travel advisor. Tom specializes in wellness, cruise, and family travel. Backed by the power of Tzell Travel Group , a leading luxury travel agency, there is nothing in the world he cannot do. With a insatiable passion for travel, Tom will curate a highly luxurious and personalized travel experience for you and yours.

Luxury Travel: Hotels, Resorts & Cruises

“I specialize in luxury leisure travel,” Tom Schmidt says, “whether for multi-generational family vacations, ocean and river cruises, groups, couples or singles.”

Relying on nearly three decades of experience in the travel industry to help his clients plan their dream vacations, listening to his client’s wants, desires and must-haves is paramount. He also uses his depth of travel industry knowledge and creativity to make every trip different than the last trip and create something truly unique. "I try to wow my clients and come up with new ideas and new angles to make every trip memorable

Wellness Travel: Leisure & Corporate

Health and overall well-being is the most important thing in life. It is essential that you take care of yourself. That’s why wellness travel is so important.

I always introduce wellness into my corporate clients’ lives because business travel is so stressful. Imagine being on the road, stuck at airports because of bad weather, delays or cancellations, sitting in coach class, because that may be all their company pays for. When my client says he must go to a business meeting in Los Angeles on Tuesday and come back on Friday, I plan the usual with the round-trip ticket, accommodations and ground transport, but I will also recommend, for example: "why not have your wife fly out there on Friday and extend your trip until Sunday and transform it into a 'leisure' trip?"

Or I might I find out whether my client has any air miles or points and recommend they take a wellness trip to recharge, perhaps to Napa Valley. In this way, a simple business trip anywhere in the world can be turned into a mini dream vacation for my client and vastly improve their physical and mental well-being.

My success in creating memorable wellness trips for my clients is due to my training to become a Certified Elite Wellness Travel Specialis t, my own personal travels and my Tzell connections.

For example, on a recent trip between Indiana and New York with my son, we stopped and stayed at the Omni Bedford Springs Resort in Pennsylvania where we enjoyed the resort amenities, body treatments and cuisine, and were rejuvenated for the last leg of our trip. This is the way to turn ordinary travel into something special. Another extraordinary dream vacation I personally experienced was Body Holiday in St Lucia . It was the perfect blend Caribbean relaxation combined with great activities, amazing cuisine (including English tea service and specialty cocktails on the beach), spa options, hikes, spin classes, beach exercise and sailing.

Terranea Resor t , an eco-luxury property in Rancho Palos Verdes, California is another great luxury resort with wellness and spa options, an adult pool, stand-up paddle boards and kayaks, spin and yoga classes right on a dramatic cliff by the Pacific Ocean with dolphins jumping in the water.

Another enriching aspect of travel is meeting people from all over the world and from all walks of life.

When is the next total solar eclipse in the US after 2024 and what is its path? What to know

The highly anticipated 2024 total solar eclipse will cross North America on Monday , giving millions of sky-gazers the chance to see a rare cosmic event that won't be viewable again for 20 years.

The eclipse's  path of totality  will travel over a portion of northern Mexico before entering the U.S. It then it will cross 13 states  from Texas to Maine, where the spectacle is expected to attract huge crowds.

If you aren't lucky enough to be in the path of totality this time around, you will have another chance - you'll just have to wait until the 2040s.

Here's what we know about the next total solar eclipse to cross over the U.S.

Eclipse playlist: Fans return to Bonnie Tyler's 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' ahead of total solar eclipse

When is the next total solar eclipse visible from the U.S.?

It will be 20 years before there's a chance to  witness a total solar eclipse  in the United States again.

According to NASA, after Monday's total solar  eclipse , the next one viewable from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

2044 total solar eclipse path of totality

Unfortunately, the 2044 total  solar eclipse  won't have the broad reach across the U.S. as the 2024 eclipse.

The path of totality during the 2044 eclipse will only touch three states, according to the Planetary Society, a nonprofit involved in research, public outreach, and political space advocacy.

The eclipse will begin in Greenland, sweep through Canada and end around sunset in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.

Pets and the eclipse: Will my pets be safe during the April 2024 solar eclipse? What experts say.

2045 solar eclipse

While the 2044 total eclipse will only touch three states, a 2045 eclipse will have a more robust path across the U.S.

Expected to occur on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2045, this solar eclipse will trace a path of totality over California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia.

A partial solar eclipse will also be viewable in 35 other states, according to National Eclipse.com

What is a total solar eclipse?

Any celestial object like a moon or a planet that passes between two other bodies can create  an eclipse  by obscuring the view of objects like the sun.

In the event of a solar eclipse, the moon comes in between the Earth and the sun, blocking its light from reaching a small part of our planet. Partial eclipses, when some part of the sun remains visible, are the most common, making total eclipses a rare sight to behold.

Total eclipses can lead to a period of darkness lasting for several minutes, during which time nocturnal animals stir while confused birds and insects may fall silent, NASA says.

When a solar eclipse reaches totality, people are able to see the sun’s outer atmosphere called the corona, which is usually obscured by the sun's bright surface. This offers scientists an uncommon opportunity  to study the corona .

Totality also offers spectators a chance to gaze upon the spectacular sight with the naked eye, though  proper  safety  glasses  are still required for the rest of the time.

What states are on the 2024 eclipse path of totality?

Mexico's Pacific coast will be the first location in continental North America to experience totality, which is expected to occur at about 11:07 a.m. PDT,  according to NASA .

As the moon's shadow will northeast, totality in the U.S. will begin in Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT. The path will then cut diagonally across the country, traveling through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont and New Hampshire.

The eclipse's path is expected to end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. EDT before visiting the maritime provinces of Canada, according to estimates.

Biden announces plans to address Baltimore port closure and help workers after deadly bridge collapse

After visiting the site of the deadly Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse on Friday, President Joe Biden said that his administration is taking swift action to try to ease the disruption at Baltimore's port and help workers and small businesses affected by the port closure.

After an aerial tour of the site, Biden said that the federal government will provide more than $8 million in grant funds to make infrastructure improvements to the port at Baltimore's Sparrows Point — an area unaffected by the bridge collapse — so it can take on more ships.

The president also announced that his administration would provide grants to workers affected by the pause in port operations and said the Small Business Administration would offer low-interest loans for small businesses impacted by the incident last week.

Image: President Biden Visits The Wreckage Of The Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapse In Baltimore

"I’m here to say your nation has your back," Biden said. "The damage is devastating and our hearts are still breaking," he continued, noting that six workers who were fixing potholes on the bridge lost their lives.

"I’ve come here to grieve with you," he said, flanked by Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore and other Maryland and Baltimore officials. "It’s not the same, but I know a little bit about what it’s like to lose a piece of your soul."

Biden reiterated that he wants Congress to pass funding to cover the entire cost of constructing a new bridge. He also said that, so far, two small channels have been cleared for ships helping to clear the wreckage and noted the tentative timeline for reopening the port announced Thursday by the Army Corps of Engineers.

The Army Corps of Engineers expects “to open a limited access channel for barge container service and some vessels that move automobiles and farm equipment by the end of April” and “restore the port to normal capacity by the end of May,” the White House said.

In addition to the aerial tour, Biden received an operational update on response efforts from the Coast Guard and Army Corps of Engineers and was expected to meet personally with the families of the six workers who died.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early on the morning of March 26 when a cargo ship crashed into a support pillar. The remains of two people who were killed have been recovered, four others are presumed dead and two people who fell into the water survived.

Biden addressed the disaster during remarks in the hours following the collapse, saying that the White House would send “all the federal resources they need” and that they would rebuild the port. He also said that he intended for the federal government to pay the entire cost of reconstructing the bridge.

Director of the Office of Management and Budget Shalanda Young sent a letter to congressional leaders on Friday asking them to authorize "a 100 percent Federal cost share for rebuilding the bridge."

“To the people of Baltimore, I want to say: We’re with you. We’re going to stay with you as long as takes. And like [Moore] said, you’re Maryland tough, you’re Baltimore strong, and we’re going to get through this together,” Biden said during his remarks last week. “And I promise: We’re not leaving.”

Image:Salvage personal work to clear debris from the Francis Scott Key Bridge on April 4, 2024 in Baltimore.

The National Economic Council has also convened the administration's Supply Chain Disruptions Task Force to coordinate federal efforts to support affected industries in the aftermath of the collapse, the White House announced last week.

“We are much better equipped to mitigate supply chain disruptions than we were just a few years ago, thanks to increased coordination across the supply chain and new efforts to strengthen both our physical and digital infrastructure,” Buttigieg said in a statement.

Also last week, the Department of Transportation announced $60 million in emergency relief funds to go toward rebuilding the bridge. The White House said it would serve as a "down payment" for initial costs.

In 2023, the Baltimore port near the bridge, a key shipping hub and source of jobs, “handled a record 52.3 million tons of foreign cargo, worth $80 billion,” Moore announced in February. The port also generated more than 15,000 direct jobs, “with nearly 140,000 jobs linked to port activities,” he said in the statement.

What time the 2024 solar eclipse started, reached peak totality and ended

By Sarah Maddox

Updated on: April 9, 2024 / 5:04 AM EDT / CBS News

The 2024 solar eclipse will be visible across North America today. As the moon's position between the Earth and sun casts a shadow on North America, that shadow, or umbra, will travel along the surface from west to east at more than 1,500 miles per hour along the path of totality .

That means the eclipse will start, peak and end at different times — as will the moments of total darkness along the path of totality — and the best time to view the eclipse depends on where you are located. Some places along the path will have more totality time than others.

In Texas, the south-central region had clouds in the forecast , but it was better to the northeast, according to the National Weather Service. The best eclipse viewing weather was expected in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine, as well as in Canada's New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

What time does the 2024 total solar eclipse start?

Eclipse map of totality

The total solar eclipse will emerge over the South Pacific Ocean before the shadow falls across North America, beginning in parts of Mexico. The path of totality , where onlookers can witness the moon fully blocking the sun (through eclipse viewing glasses for safety ), is expected to first make landfall near the city of Mazatlán around 9:51 a.m. MT.

The total solar eclipse will cross over the U.S.-Mexico border into Texas, where it will emerge over Eagle Pass at 12:10 p.m. CT and then peak at about 1:27 p.m. CT.

In Dallas, NASA data shows the partial eclipse will first become visible at 12:23 p.m. CT and peak at 1:40 p.m. CT. The next states in the path of totality are Oklahoma and Arkansas, where the eclipse begins in Little Rock at 12:33 p.m. CT.

Cleveland will see the beginning of the eclipse at 1:59 p.m. ET. Darkness will start spreading over the sky in Buffalo, New York, at 2:04 p.m. ET. Then, the eclipse will reach northwestern Vermont, including Burlington, at 2:14 p.m. ET. Parts of New Hampshire and Maine will also follow in the path of totality before the eclipse first reaches the Canadian mainland  at 3:13 p.m. ET.

Although the experience won't be exactly the same, viewers in all the contiguous U.S. states outside the path of totality will still be able to see a partial eclipse. Some places will see most of the sun blocked by the moon, including Washington, D.C., where the partial eclipse will start at 2:04 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:20 p.m. ET.

In Chicago, viewers can start viewing the partial eclipse at 12:51 p.m. CT, with the peak arriving at 2:07 p.m. CT.  In Detroit, viewers will be able to enjoy a near-total eclipse beginning at 1:58 p.m. ET and peaking at 3:14 p.m. ET.

New York City will also see a substantial partial eclipse, beginning at 2:10 p.m. ET and peaking around 3:25 p.m. ET.

In Boston it will begin at 2:16 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:29 p.m. ET.

The below table by NASA shows when the eclipse will start, peak and end in 13 cities along the eclipse's path.

What time will the solar eclipse reach peak totality?

Millions more people will have the chance to witness the total solar eclipse this year than during the last total solar eclipse , which was visible from the U.S. in 2017.

The eclipse's peak will mean something different for cities within the path of totality and for those outside. Within the path of totality, darkness will fall for a few minutes. The longest will last more than 4 minutes, but most places will see between 3.5 and 4 minutes of totality. In cities experiencing a partial eclipse, a percentage of the sun will be obscured for more than two hours.

Mazatlán is set to experience totality at 11:07 am PT. Dallas will be able to see the moon fully cover the sun at 1:40 p.m. CT. Little Rock will start to see the full eclipse at 1:51 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 3:13 p.m. ET and Buffalo at 3:18 p.m. ET. Totality will reach Burlington at 3:26 p.m. ET before moving into the remaining states and reaching Canada around 4:25 p.m.

Outside the path of totality, 87.4% of the sun will be eclipsed in Washington, D.C. at 3:20 p.m. ET, and Chicago will have maximum coverage of 93.9% at 2:07 p.m. CT. New York City is much closer to the path of totality this year than it was in 2017; it will see 89.6% coverage at 3:25 p.m. EDT.

Detroit is another city that will encounter a near-total eclipse, with 99.2% maximum coverage at 3:14 p.m. ET. Boston will see 92.4% coverage at 3:29 p.m. ET.

What time will the solar eclipse end?

The eclipse will leave continental North America from Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NT, according to NASA.

At the beginning of the path of totality in Mazatlán, the eclipse will be over by 12:32 p.m. PT, and it will leave Dallas at 3:02 p.m. CT. The eclipse will end in Little Rock at 3:11 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 4:29 p.m. CDT and Buffalo at 4:32 p.m. ET. Burlington won't be far behind, with the eclipse concluding at 4:37 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile, the viewing will end in Chicago at 3:21 p.m. CT, Washington, D.C. at 4:32 p.m. ET, and New York City at 4:36 p.m. ET.

In Detroit, the partial eclipse will disappear at 4:27 p.m. ET, and in Boston, it will be over at 4:39 p.m. ET.

How long will the eclipse last in total?

The total solar eclipse will begin in Mexico at 11:07 a.m. PT and leave continental North America at 5:16 p.m. NT. From the time the partial eclipse first appears on Earth to its final glimpses before disappearing thousands of miles away, the celestial show will dazzle viewers for about 5 hours, according to timeanddate.com .

The length of the total solar eclipse at points along the path depends on the viewing location. The longest will be 4 minutes and 28 seconds, northwest of Torreón, Mexico. Near the center of the path, totality takes place for the longest periods of time, according to NASA.

Spectators will observe totality for much longer today than during the 2017 eclipse , when the longest stretch of totality was 2 minutes and 32 seconds.

The moon's shadow seen on Earth today, called the umbra, travels at more than 1,500 miles per hour, according to NASA. It would move even more quickly if the Earth rotated in the opposite direction.

What is the longest a solar eclipse has ever lasted?

The longest known totality was 7 minutes and 28 seconds in 743 B.C. However, NASA says this record will be broken in 2186 with a 7 minute, 29 second total solar eclipse. The next total solar eclipse visible from parts of the U.S. won't happen until Aug. 23, 2044.

Sarah Maddox has been with CBS News since 2019. She works as an associate producer for CBS News Live.

April 2024 Travel, Expense, and Card Policy Updates

The Travel and Card team is happy to announce the following policy updates and changes:

  • UW-3022, International Travel : To align with Universities of Wisconsin foreign/international travel policy, two new allowable expenses associated with international travel will be added: international calling/data plans when accompanied by a business justification and required inoculations/vaccinations.
  • UW-3024, Expense Reimbursement : Universities of Wisconsin require receipts regardless of cost for international calling/data plans as well as required inoculations/vaccinations. These have been added to the section “Receipts are always required…”
  • UW-3018, Meals and Incidentals : A note has been added to clarify that individual phone calls are included in the incidental per diem rate, but international calling/data plans are reimbursable for foreign travel if supported by a UW business purpose.
  • UW-3075, Official Functions and Expenses: Several Divisions on campus have reached out regarding whether children/dependent travel expenses may be included as part of an Official Function pre-approval for a UW-Madison job interview trip. Policy language currently limits this to “ a spouse/significant other/companion.” The “a” will be removed to allow for more flexibility in arranging job interview travel, where the number of accompanying individuals is not limited to one . The policy will now read: “Travel expenses for spouse/significant other/companions to accompany an applicant on a UW-Madison job interview trip.” The approved Official Function must outline each additional traveler for the job interview trip, the approved travel expenses for additional travelers, and the business benefit for including the additional traveler(s) on the job interview trip.
  • UW-3026, Non-Payable/Non-Reimbursable Expenses : This policy needed to be updated to reflect that dependent travel expenses may be payable/reimbursable if associated with a preapproved Official Function for job applicant travel. Additionally, a provision for rental of graduation regalia was added. Purchase of regalia is neither payable nor reimbursable. Finally, we clarified a point of confusion around manuscript expenses; both article submission fees and article publication fees are payable/reimbursable when purchased using a card product (e.g., debit, credit).

All of these changes are reflected in the UW-Madison Policy Library .
