It is the first AVCA/CBVB weekly national honor for both Alden and Myszkowski. Myszkowski and Alden demonstrated their dominance at the Death Volley Invitational, boasting an outstanding 4-0 record against ranked opponents on court 5. Without dropping a set in the marquee event, they recorded the first points of No. 2 UCLA's dual wins against No. 10 LSU and No. 4 TCU. Their season record stands at an impressive 20-1. The Bruin pair has won 18 matches in a row and are 20-1 on the year (all on court five). This week they defeated four ranked teams without dropping a set. In the 18-match winning streak, all 18 have come against ranked teams, with six coming against top-five teams and a total of 13 coming against teams in the top-10 nationally. ALDEN, MYSZKOWSKI NAMED PAC-12 PAIR OF THE WEEK Redshirt freshman  Ensley Alden  (Vista, Calif.) and junior  Natalie Myszkowski  (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) of UCLA Beach Volleyball have been named the Pac-12 Pair of the Week as announced by the league office on April 2. This marks the first time either player has been named part of the Pac-12 Pair of the Week.

  • Took down all four court-five opponents in straight sets, only allowing more than 17 points in three of the eight sets.
  • The pair recorded the first point of the dual in the Bruins' wins against both No. 10 LSU (21-14, 21-17) and No. 4 TCU (21-18, 21-13), with their remaining wins against Florida State (22-20) and Florida Atlantic (21-17, 26-24) earning the second point of the dual.
  • After only dropping one match all season for an overall record of 20-1, the duo's weekend wins brought their current win streak to 18 consecutive matches.
  • Each of their last 18 wins have come against ranked teams, with six coming against Top-5 teams and a total of 13 coming against Top-10 teams.

BRENNAN, NEWBERRY NAMED PAC-12 PAIR OF THE WEEK Senior  Peri Brennan  (Laguna Beach, Calif.) and graduate student  Devon Newberry  (Santa Monica, Calif.) of UCLA Beach Volleyball were named the Pac-12 Pair of the Week as announced by the league office on March 19. This marks the third time Newberry has been named part of the Pac-12 Pair of the Week and the second for Brennan.

  • After helping No. 2 UCLA to four ranked wins at the East Meets West Invitational over the weekend, the duo ran their season record to 17-2.
  • The pair is on a six-match win streak without dropping a set in the last six duals.
  • Newberry and Brennan held their weekend opponents to under 15 points in four of the eight sets.
  • Playing solely on court two, the duo took down No. 4 Florida State, No. 8 LSU, No. 15 Georgia State and No. 17 Grand Canyon to add four more wins to the Bruins' 14 ranked wins this season.
  • Newberry and Brennan contributed the first point of the dual in all four matches.
  • This is the third career Pac-12 Beach Volleyball Pair of the Week award for  Devon Newberry  (March 1, 2022; April 9, 2021), second career Pair of the Week award for  Peri Brennan  (March 21, 2023) and first of the season for the pair.

BOYD, DENABURG NAMED AVCA/CBVB PAIR OF THE WEEK Sophomore  Maggie Boyd  (Flower Mound, Texas / Marcus HS) and graduate student  Lexy Denaburg  (Merritt Island, Fla. / Merritt Island HS) were named the AVCA/CBVB Collegiate Beach Pair of the Week as announced by the AVCA on March 3. It is the first AVCA/CBVB weekly national honor for Boyd and the second for Denaburg. Denaburg and Boyd were instrumental in UCLA's victories over four ranked teams during the Battle for LA at Mapes Beach (Mar. 1-2). On the first day, they went 2-0,  dominating No. 8 Cal's No. 1s in straight sets and sealing the deal with a hard-fought, three-set win over No. 18 Cal Poly's top pair, clinching the dual. Their momentum carried into the second day, when they picked up wins in the matches against No. 13 Washington and clinching the dual victory against No. 9 Long Beach State. BOYD, DENABURG NAMED PAC-12 PAIR OF THE WEEK Sophomore  Maggie Boyd  (Flower Mound, Texas) and graduate student  Lexy Denaburg  (Merritt Island, Fla.) of UCLA Beach Volleyball were named the Pac-12 Pair of the Week as announced by the league office on March 4. This marks the fourth time Denaburg has been named part of the Pac-12 Pair of the Week and the second for Boyd.

  • The No. 1 Bruins' pair helped UCLA to a weekend sweep (4-0) over four ranked opponents.
  • The court one pair began the Battle for LA with a win in straight sets against No. 8 California's top pair (21-18, 21-12), going on to secure a dual-clinching win against No. 18 Cal Poly's No. 1 duo (13-21, 21-17, 15-12).
  • Against No. 13 Washington, Boyd and Denaburg played to another three-set win (21-14, 16-21, 15-11), closing out the weekend with yet another dual-clinching performance against No. 9 Long Beach State.
  • The Bruins are now 8-3, with all 11 duals coming against ranked opponents, while stretching its win streak to seven (five against top-10 opponents).
  • Named the AVCA Beach Volleyball Pair of the Week, the first in Boyd's career and second in Denaburg's.

BOYD, DENABURG NAMED UCLA STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK, PRESENTED BY READY Sophomore  Maggie Boyd  and graduate student  Lexy Denaburg  of UCLA Beach Volleyball were selected the UCLA Student-Athletes of the Week, presented by Ready, for the week of Feb. 26-Mar. 3. The top-ranked Bruins' court one pair of Denaburg and Boyd helped UCLA go 4-0 at the Battle for LA with four wins over AVCA Top 20 teams this week (Mar. 1-2). The Bruins improved to 8-3 on the year, with all 11 duals coming against ranked opponents, while UCLA stretched its winning streak to seven (five against Top 10 foes). Denaburg and Boyd were also named the AVCA National Pair of the Week on Monday. The duo had two dual-clinching wins over #18 Cal Poly and #9 Long Beach State. At the Battle for LA in rainy conditions, the Bruins defeated No. 9 California, 4-1, No. 18 Cal Poly, 4-1, No. 13 Washington, 5-0, and No. 9 Long Beach State, 4-1.  Boyd and Denaburg secure their first-career UCLA student-athlete of the week awards. RETURNING STARTERS The Bruins return seven of 10 starters from last year's second-place team at the NCAA Championship that saw UCLA end the year with an overall record of 40-4 (tied for the most wins in UCLA, Pac-12, and NCAA history). The Bruins lost the services of Abby Van Winkle (35-7 overall, 128-34 career), Haley Hallgren (32-4 overall, 116-38 career), and Marlie Monserez (27-5 overall, 48-17 career). UCLA also lost the services of reserve Kelli Greene-Agnew (10-4 overall, 87-48 career). The seven starters returning include: from court one, All-Americans Lexy Denaburg (32-7 overall, 100-29 career) and Maggie Boyd (27-6 overall and career), from court two, Peri Brennan (34-5 overall, 37-5 career), from court three Rileigh Powers (31-4 overall, 92-28 career), from court four Jessie Smith (26-6 overall, 53-17 career), and from court five Jaden Whitmarsh (24-3 overall,85-16 career) and Devon Newberry (13-0 overall, 71-20 career). RETURNING BRUINS LOOKING TO MAKE AN IMPACT The Bruins also return two players that started most of the 2022 season in Sophie Moore (13-4 overall, 41-11 career), Natalie Myszkowski (11-2 overall, 39-9 career), and Tessa Van Winkle (21-9 overall, 30-11 career). There are five additional players coming back from last year's team and ready to compete for a spot in the Bruins' lineup. This group includes Madeline Bonanni (0-0), Kenzie Brower (0-0), Reagan Hope (0-0), Jayla Shanks (0-0), and Ky Vaickus (0-0). FRESH FACES The Bruins also brought in several young players that will all debut in 2024. The class includes Harper Cooper (Rowlett, Texas/Parish Episcopal), Hannah Fleming (Santa Cruz, Calif./Scotts Valley HS), Taylor Ford (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista HS), and Kaley Mathews (Marin County, Calif./Redwood HS) . NO DUAL PARTICIPATION For the fourth time in program history (and fourth consecutive year), the UCLA beach volleyball program does not have a single player from the Bruins' indoor volleyball team currently playing on the roster. UCLA only has one player with collegiate indoor experience in junior transfer Reagan Hope (Oregon in 2021-22). A NEW ERA BEGINS Entering her 11th year with the Bruins and first season as UCLA's Head Coach, Jenny Johnson Jordan spent the previous three seasons as the Associate Head Coach at UCLA. She is currently 22-4 (.846) in her first season, getting her first victory as a head coach in a 5-0 sweep at No. 9 Hawai'i on Feb. 22, 2024. She also picked up her win over a No. 1 team and her first win over USC when the Bruins took down the Trojans, 4-1, to win the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic on Feb. 24, 2024. An Olympian, a National Champion, and a UCLA Hall of Famer (2018), Johnson Jordan won NCAA titles as both a player (1991 - indoor) and a coach (2018 and 2019 - beach). Jordan was inducted into the CBVA Hall of Fame (Nov. 3, 2018) and was named the AVCA National Assistant Beach Coach of the Year on May 9, 2019. Johnson Jordan completed her staff during the off-season and brought back beach volleyball Hall of Famer (CBVA in 2014 and International Volleyball Hall of Fame in 2017) and USA Beach Volleyball National Team head coach Jose Loiola as an assistant coach. Loiola was a volunteer assistant coach for the Bruins in 2021, helping guide UCLA to a Pac-12 Championship and NCAA runner-up finish. After Loiola's previous season with the Bruins, he went on to coach 2020 Olympian Tri Bourne and also served as head coach of the USA Volleyball squad that won gold at the 2021 U19 World Championships. In 2022, he coached Miles Partain and Andy Benesh to gold at the FIVB Challenger Dubai.   She then completed her coaching staff with the Bruins' first-ever All-American in beach volleyball (2013), UCLA standout Kelly Reeves . In addition to her playing career, Reeves has developed a coaching career in all levels of the sport, including juniors, collegiate, USAV development, and amateurs. In 2022, Reeves helped the LMU Lions finish 4th at the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship, the best finish in the program's history. That same year, Reeves was a recipient of the Thirty Under 30 Beach coaches award from the AVCA. Reeves is also a National Champion, helping the Bruins win the indoor title in 2011. She has played on the AVP since 2016 and has also competed on the NORCECA Tour and FIVB World Tour. PAC-12 BEACH VOLLEYBALL, THE FINAL SEASON In 2016, beach volleyball was added as the 23rd Pac-12-sponsored sport beginning in the 2015-16 academic year. With nine member institutions (Arizona, Arizona State, California, Oregon, Stanford, UCLA, USC, Utah and Washington) currently fielding beach volleyball teams, the Conference of Champions was the first major conference to sponsor beach volleyball as an official sport. As part of the addition, the Pac-12 has also sponsored a Beach Volleyball Championship, which the Bruins won last year, and have won two of the last three and three of the last five. This year's final Pac-12 Championship will be hosted by Arizona State at the new Sun Devil Beach Volleyball Facility April 24-26. PAC-12 CHAMPIONS (2023) No. 1 UCLA (37-3) came all the way back through the contender's bracket with three straight 3-0 sweeps of No. 3 USC (28-5), No. 8 Stanford (28-12) and No. 9 California (28-9) on Friday (Apr. 28) to capture its third Pac-12 Conference Championship at Stanford's Beach Volleyball Stadium. UCLA earned its 21st-23rd sweep of the year, which ties for the most in program history, which was established by the NCAA Championship team of 2019. The Bruins opened with a 3-0 sweep of Utah on Apr. 26 and then dropped its first-ever dual to Stanford, 3-2, on Apr. 27. The Bruins advanced to the semifinals of the contender's bracket with a 3-0 sweep of Arizona on Apr. 27 before making their Championship run the following day. UCLA became just the second team to come from the contender's bracket to win a title (USC did it in 2017 against the Bruins). PAC-12 ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM The UCLA Bruins had two pairs named to the Pac-12 Championship All-Tournament Team in 2023. Both pairs went 5-0 during tournament play and they included Peri Brennan and Abby Van Winkle on court two and Jaden Whitmarsh and Devon Newberry on court five. LEXY DENABURG IS MOVING ON UP Last year, 2023 Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year,  Abby Van Winkle , became the UCLA all-time leader in career victories with a win over USC in the semifinals of the contender's bracket of the 2023 Pac-12 Championship. The two-time All-American (2022 and 2023) finished with 128 career victories to her credit. This year, graduate student and three-time All-American, Lexy Denaburg is going to challenge that mark as she currently sits in a tie for third place with 119 career wins on the Bruins' top court. 1.  Abby Van Winkle (128, 2019-23) 2. Izzy Carey (123, 2016-19) 3. Lexy Denaburg (122, 2020-24) 4. Savvy Simo (119, 2017-21) 5. Lea Monkhouse (117, 2019-22) 6. Megan McNamara (111, 2016-19) 7. Nicole McNamara (109, 2016-19) 8. Jaden Whitmarsh (103, 2019-24) 9. Elise Zappia (102, 2015-18) Other current Bruins and their career totals in wins ( Rileigh Powers - 94, Devon Newberry - 94). A CLOSER LOOK AT THE RECORD BOOK Lexy Denaburg is on pace to break the Bruins' all-time career wins mark, established last season by Abby Van Winkle at 128. Denaburg is currently in third place with 122 wins, and is in her final season with the Bruins in 2024. Denaburg had 32 wins a year ago and is 22-4 overall this season (all on court one). UCLA AS NO. 1 AND VS. NO. 1 As the No. 1 team in the country, UCLA has gone 108-15 (.878) all-time, but just 7-7 (.500) against USC when the Bruins are No. 1. The first time UCLA was ranked No. 1 came in April of 2018 and since then, UCLA has been ranked No. 1 for multiple weeks every season, including going 16-1 in 2018, 31-3 in 2019, 7-2 in 2020, 13-3 in 2021, 12-2 in 2022, 19-3 in 2023, and 10-1 in 2024 as the nation's top-ranked team. The UCLA Bruins are 10-17 (.370) all-time against the top-ranked teams in the country. UCLA began 0-5 against the nation's top-ranked programs (2013-16) before breaking through with its first-ever win over a No. 1 team in the 3-2 home win over then top-ranked Pepperdine on March 30, 2016. Here's a breakdown of the Bruins against the No. 1 teams: Pepperdine 2-3; TCU 1-0; USC 7-14. The Bruins have been involved in No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchups 23 times with a 9-14 record (.391) in those meetings. Interestingly, UCLA is just 2-9 (.182) as the top-ranked team in those matchups but 7-5 (.583) as the underdog. MORE ON RANKINGS Since 2018, no team has been ranked No. 1 for more weeks than the UCLA Bruins (32). USC has spent 23 weeks at No. 1 in the last six years while TCU (6), Pepperdine (4), LSU (4), and Florida State (1) round out the list. Overall, the Trojans have been ranked No. 1 a total of 45 times in the AVCA Poll, followed by UCLA (32), Pepperdine (17), TCU (6), LSU (4), Hawai'i (1), and Florida State (1). POLLING THE BRUINS UCLA jumped up one spot to No. 1 in this week's 2024 AVCA Collegiate Beach Volleyball Poll (April 2). AVCA COLLEGIATE BEACH VOLLEYBALL POLL (April 2, 2024)

College sports | usc captain kobe johnson announces transfer to ucla, two-time pac-12 all-defensive team member announces a day after louisville guard skyy clark said he'd be a bruin.

ucla tour 2023

LOS ANGELES — After a lost season light on consistent 3-and-D wings, UCLA basketball coach Mick Cronin might have just found the piece he’s been missing.

And he plucked him from right across town.

On Thursday morning, USC transfer Kobe Johnson announced his commitment to UCLA, a fairly quick two weeks after he’d entered the transfer portal. It’s a big-time get for the Bruins as they look to retool, as Johnson was unquestionably one of the most proven players in the portal, a captain for USC who was a back-to-back mainstay on the Pac-12 All-Defensive Team. And Cronin is well-familiar with Johnson, whose performance most recently in late February – 10 points, 2 for 2 from 3-point range and four steals in the kind of do-everything role he’s best suited for – helped USC to a victory over the Bruins .

Suddenly, UCLA has added two plug-and-play starters in the transfer portal in the span of two days. On Wednesday night, 6-foot-3 Louisville sophomore transfer Skyy Clark announced his commitment to UCLA, a sparkplug scoring guard originally from Los Angeles who has gone through a carousel of teams in his basketball career.

“Home is where the heart is!! #MickisthePick,” Clark announced on social media.

In the worst season in Cronin’s tenure, UCLA’s flaws in roster construction were readily apparent, and the coach rarely minced words when discussing them. This was a gritty, young group, but one massively light on shooting and perimeter playmaking before the late-season emergence of Dylan Andrews . They lacked a consistent defensive stopper, too, to throw at opposing top-scoring wings. And they needed a consistent leader, a group of underclassmen and transfers thrown together in a strange mix.

“I feel like a fifth-grade teacher at times,” Cronin said after a January victory over USC . “‘Everybody listen! Hold hands, so we’re all listening during the scouting report, during the walk-through!’ It’s just life, with inexperienced guys.”

Johnson checks every box, a 6-6 stat-sheet stuffer who is best suited for a complementary offensive role and brings a captain’s experience to Westwood. His arrival immediately gives UCLA a weapon to throw at top scorers in the Big Ten, and a steady hand who can make a catch-and-shoot 3-point shot and pick up secondary ballhandling duties (3.3 assists per game last year). After extended offensive struggles midseason that led to his benching, Johnson thrived upon a re-insertion into the starting lineup for the last nine games of USC’s season, averaging 12.4 points a game, 5.3 rebounds and 2.9 steals per game while shooting 41.2% from deep.

“I see myself being the defensive guy, in the NBA,” Johnson told the Southern California News Group in October. “I see myself guarding the best players every night, each and every night, coming out there and being able to help the team win. That’s where my head is at. I’m not going to try to come in and do stuff that I’m not used to, or trying to do anything out of my comfort zone.”

And his goal, as expressed in that October conversation, was to enter the draft after his junior season at USC. But after both spurts of team-wide and individual struggles – shooting just 40.4% from the field as a junior – Johnson announced he’d enter into the NBA draft and the transfer portal in late March. And the outcome, a captain joining a rival as both schools enter the Big Ten, is a tough blow for USC as it searches for a new coach in the wake of Andy Enfield’s departure for SMU .

Clark, too, addresses an instant need for UCLA, offering shooting (35.3% from 3-point range on 4.6 attempts per game at Louisville) and perimeter shot-creation (13.2 points per game). His fit next to Andrews, however, will be a puzzle for Cronin, Clark a high-turnover playmaker not particularly known for his defense.

All in all, it’s a banner week for UCLA, whose potential starting lineup – Andrews, Clark, Johnson, Lazar Stefanovic and Adem Bona – suddenly looks ripe with scoring and playmaking threats entering the Big Ten.

UConn wins back-to-back NCAA championships: Huskies continue dominant run, thwarting Purdue for sixth title

Uconn is the first team to win back-to-back ncaa tournament titles since florida in 2006-07.

UConn won its sixth national championship in program history and second in a row on Monday night as the No. 1 seed Huskies beat No. 1 seed Purdue 75-60 inside State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. The victory marked UConn's 12th straight double-digit win in NCAA Tournament action, a streak of historic dominance that dates back to the beginning of last year's tournament.

The Huskies are the first team to repeat as college basketball's national champion since Florida did it in 2006 and 2007. UConn is now tied with North Carolina for third for most national championships behind only Kentucky (8) and UCLA (11). Purdue held serve early behind a heavy dose of two-time Naismith Award winner Zach Edey, but the Boilermakers couldn't keep pace as the Huskies took away their perimeter punch.

Purdue entered ranked No. 2 nationally in 3-point shooting percentage at 40.6%. The Boilermakers averaged 8.3 makes per game from beyond the arc on 20.6 attempts. But the Huskies defended the 3-point line like hawks, limiting Purdue's attempts from beyond the arc. On the interior, UConn relied heavily on 7-foot-2 center Donovan Clingan to defend the 7-4 Edey who closed his career with a big offensive night, his efficiency waned after a 6 of 9 start.

The outcome denied Purdue its first-ever national title and marked a disappointing end to an otherwise successful redemption tour. After losing to No. 16 seed Fairleigh Dickinson in the first round of last year's Big Dance, the Boilermakers followed up with their first Final Four trip since 1980 and first title game appearance since 1969. In the end, UConn's systematic dominance carried the day, as the Huskies left no doubt over who the best team was in college basketball during the 2023-24 season.

Here are three takeaways from UConn's historic win ...

The Huskies complete (another) historic run

UConn became the second school (joining UCLA) to win back-to-back title games by at least 15 points. In all 12 NCAA Tournament games dating back to last season, the Huskies won every game by double-digits. UConn didn't just repeat as champions, they did so historically and dominantly. In the transfer portal era, this could go down as one of the final teams that was able to get over the hump a second time and repeat as champions.

UConn lost three players to the NBA from last year's title team and reloaded to become the first team in nearly two decades to repeat. UConn coach Dan Hurley was already considered one of the best coaches in the sport before tonight, and another title to just coaching résumé raises his profile even further. — CS

Purdue's perimeter problem

UConn's defensive game plan to take away Purdue's perimeter shooting worked to perfection. It also highlighted the Boilermakers' lack of star power in the backcourt. Braden Smith and Fletcher Loyer each took major strides as sophomores at Purdue, and Lance Jones proved to be a critical, veteran transfer addition from Southern Illinois. All three played pivotal roles in getting the Boilermakers to this stage. But they were outclassed in size and talent by UConn. The trio combined to make 6 of 20 shots from the floor, and Loyer was held scoreless for the first time in his career.

While Smith's 12 points made him Purdue's second-leading scorer behind Edey, who finished with 37, his contributions tapered off in crunch time. Smith went 0 for 5 in the second half. In total, players other than Edey made just 9 of 29 shots for the Boilermakers. Someone like former Purdue star guard Jaden Ivey would have been useful for the Boilermakers in this matchup. But with no dynamic perimeter weapon on its roster, Purdue played right into the hands of UConn's defensive strategy.  — DC

UConn executes game plan to perfection

The Huskies' game plan was simple: Don't let anyone other than Edey beat them. Edey finished with 37 points, and his teammate Braden Smith was the other player to score in double figures (12). The Boilermakers are one of the top 3-point shooting teams coming into the night, and a handful of those wide-open opportunities came from Edey getting double-teamed. UConn elected to guard Edey man-to-man with Clingan, and they rarely sent double teams at him. Purdue finished 1 of 7 from beyond the arc, and that performance hindered any chance at a comeback. Edey got Clingan and backup forward Hassan Diarra in foul trouble, but it didn't matter because they stuck to the plan. It worked. It's why UConn is the champion again.  — CS

UConn repeats as champions

Final: (1) uconn 75, (1) purdue 60.

The repeat is complete.

No. 1 overall seed UConn routed No. 1 seed Purdue 75-60 to become the first team since Florida in 2006-07 to repeat as national champions. The Huskies completed a historic tournament run that included six wins by double-digits to win their sixth championship in program history. UConn is now tied with North Carolina for the third-most national championships all-time behind Kentucky and UCLA.

The Huskies led nearly wire-to-wire after Purdue came out hot in the opening minutes of the first half. UConn used a balanced scoring attack led by All-American guard Tristen Newton (20 points), freshman star Stephon Castle (15 points), and sharpshooter Cam Spencer (11 points). UConn never trailed after falling behind 23-21 with 8:07 remaining in the opening frame.

Purdue star big man Zach Edey finished with 37 points and 10 rebounds in the final game of his college career. Boilermakers coach Matt Painter mentioned in February that Edey planned on declaring for the 2024 NBA Draft, meaning this is the end of the road for the two-time National Player of the Year. Edey recorded at least 20 points and 10 rebounds in seven consecutive NCAA Tournament games.

Purdue was making its first appearance in the title game since 1969. The Boilermakers came into the title game as one of the top 3-point shooting teams in the country. As a team, Purdue only attempted seven shots from beyond the arc. UConn's game plan was to limit shots from distance, and they did it by rarely double-teaming Edey when Clingan was on the floor.

UConn is the eighth different program to repeat as champions. Oklahoma State, Kentucky, UCLA, Cincinnati, San Francisco, Duke and Florida did it previously.

Zach Edey not going quietly

Zach Edey's final college game likely isn't going to have the outcome he dreamed of, but the 7-foot-4 superstar is going to go out with a big box score. He's up to 29 points and nine rebounds on 11 of 21 shooting. Part of that is how UConn has played defense — rarely sending double-teams — but it also shows just how dominant of a singular force he is. Ultimately, he's just matched up against a better all-around team.

UConn can taste it

Late 2h: (1) uconn 65, (1) purdue 49.

UConn is just minutes away from becoming the first team since Florida to repeat as national champions. The Huskies extended their lead to as many as 18 points and used a balanced scoring attack in the second half to pull away. UConn star Tristen Newton has a team-high 16 points.

Boilermakers struggling

Purdue is now just 3 of 12 from the floor in the second half and getting its doors blown off by a historically dominant UConn team that is just relentless. Not only are the Boilermakers struggling offensively, but their misses are leading to transition possessions for the Huskies, who are putting Purdue in a blender and getting good looks. The Boilermakers are not built to come back from big deficits, and UConn is making that even more difficult than usual with its stifling defense of the 3-point line.

Purdue is on the ropes

The second half has been more of the same offensively for Purdue, which can't get 3-point attempts up. The Boilermakers are in the danger of becoming the 12th straight team to lose by double-digits against UConn in NCAA Tournament action. Purdue is just 3 of 11 from the floor in the second half, and Edey is now just 8 of 17 from the floor. UConn's defense has been elite, and it doesn't look like Purdue has any answers with the way the Huskies are taking away the 3-point line.

UConn pulling away

Mid 2h: (1) uconn 51, (1) purdue 38.

With UConn star big man Donovan Clingan off the floor, the Huskies are doubling Purdue star Zach Edey in the paint. With Clingan in, UConn was guarding the two-time National Player of the Year one-on-one. On the first possession with Clingan off the floor, UConn brought the double, and Edey turned it over. Clingan checked back in after a brief rest because backup big man Samson Johnson picked up his fourth foul.

UConn extends lead

Early 2h: (1) uconn 43, (1) purdue 34.

UConn star big man Donovan Clingan just picked up his third foul right before the first media timeout of the second half. Clingan has been guarding Purdue star big man Zach Edey all night, and it will be interesting to see if UConn coach Dan Hurley keeps him in. UConn All-American guard Tristen Newton is up to 14 points.

Nasty dunk from Purdue's Cam Heide

Purdue reserve Camden Heide threw down a nasty follow dunk after a Zach Edey miss. He tore down the lane, rose at the perfect time, caught it in his outstretched right hand and threw it down on an unsuspecting Cam Spencer. That could be a late addition to One Shining Moment, even if the Boilermakers don't win. That's a level of athleticism and highlight-reel ability that you don't often see from Purdue.

Purdue's problem

Zach Edey led Purdue with 16 points in the first half but went scoreless over the final 5:46 as UConn extended its lead from 26-25 to 36-30. Braden Smith has nine points in support of the star big man, but there are few high-percentage looks available for Purdue outside of Edey. UConn is bigger and more athletic than the Boilermakers and was mostly content in the first half to go 1-on-1 against Edey. That has prevented Edey's supporting cast from getting going and left the onus squarely on Edey's back.

Purdue goes quiet

Braden Smith hit a huge 3-pointer at the 2:18 mark with the shot clock winding down. That was Purdue's first make from beyond the arc in the half and only its second attempt. He got it off over 6-foot-8 Alex Karaban with the help of a Zach Edey screen. But it was the last bucket of the half for the Boilermakers, who might feel fortunate to be down just six points at the break. Cam Spencer missed an open floater on UConn's final possession that would have made it a three-possession game.

UConn leads at halftime

Half: (1) uconn 36, (1) purdue 30.

We have reached halftime from Glendale, Arizona, and the first 20 minutes of game action have certainly lived up to the hype. UConn led for over 12 minutes and will take a six-point lead into the locker room. Someone other than Tristen Newton, Donovan Clingan, Cam Spencer, and Hassan Diarra finally scored for the Huskies late in the firts half when UConn star freshman Stephon Castle got on the board with a jumper. Newton has a team-high 11 points, while Spencer, Clingan, and Diarra all have seven.

Purdue is one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the country, and UConn didn't allow a make from distance until Braden Smith connected with 2:18 left in the half. The Boilermakers only attempted two 3-pointers in the opening frame.

Purdue needs help

Purdue needs something, anything, from its supporting cast. Zach Edey is carrying the Boilermakers even more so than usual. UConn is countering with a balanced scoring attack, per usual. Players not named Zach Edey are now a combined 4 of 13 for Purdue. UConn is doing an excellent job of using its size advantage to keep the Boilermakers from even considering outside shots. The only player to attempt a trey for the Boilermakers so far is little-used reserve Myles Colvin, who bricked one from the left elbow at the 11:33 mark.

Clingan, Newton, Spencer and Diarra pacing UConn

Late 1h: (1) uconn 30, (1) purdue 25.

Only four players have scored for UConn 16 minutes into this national title game. Tristen Newton has a team-high nine points, and Donovan Clingan, Cam Spencer, and Hassan Diarra all have seven. UConn is on a 9-2 run over the last four minutes, and Purdue has missed six of its last seven shots.

Edey's breather

Purdue coach Matt Painter opted to get a breather for Zach Edey coming out of the u8 media timeout. UConn immediately went inside to Donovan Clingan, who scored over reserve Purdue big man Caleb Furst. After one Purdue offensive possession that consisted of a missed Fletcher Loyer floater, Edey returned. That might be the only time he comes off the floor.

Foul trouble on both sides

Mid 1h: (1) uconn 23, (1) purdue 23.

UConn star Donovan Clingan has played more than 30 minutes only three times this season. With backup big man Samson Johnson heading to the bench after picking up his second foul, it will be interesting to follow how many minutes Clingan logs. The Huskies have six team fouls with 6:50 left in the half. The next foul will result in free throws for the rest of the frame for the Boilermakers. UConn star freshman Stephon Castle has been held scoreless after having a breakout performance against Alabama last weekend. UConn All-American guard Tristen Newton has seven points.

All on the inside

Purdue entered ranked No. 2 nationally in 3-point shooting percentage at 40.6%. The Boilermakers averaged 8.3 makes per game from beyond the arc. But it's been all about the interior early. Purdue has attempted just one 3-pointer through 13+ minutes and is outscoring UConn 16-8 in the paint behind 14 points from Zach Edey, who is 6 of 8 from the floor. The rest of Purdue's team is 4 of 10.

Halfcourt style of play

Mid 1h: (1) uconn 18, (1) purdue 16.

UConn is having a tough time (like most teams this season) slowing down Purdue star Zach Edey. The two-time Naismith Player of the Year has 11 points already. UConn star center Donovan Clingan picked up his first foul and will head to the bench. UConn backup big man Samson Johnson replaced him, and he will take on the enormous task of guarding Edey. Less than a minute after he checked into the game, Johnson picked up a foul. This game has been played mostly in the half-court. It will be interesting if either team elects to speed up the pace.

Edey is on

Zach Edey is on his game early for Purdue, making a huge impact on both ends of the floor. Donovan Clingan is not providing the defensive foil that was expected, and Edey is also blocking shots on defense. He's showing why he is the repeat Naismith Award winner. With Clingan now heading to the bench, Samson Johnson will get a crack at defending Edey, who is dominating early.

UConn up early

Early 1h: (1) uconn 11, (1) purdue 9.

On the first possession, Purdue tossed the ball inside to star big man Zach Edey, and UConn center Donovan Clingan was there to meet him inside the paint. Clingan forced him into a contested shot, but Edey has four quick points. UConn sharpshooter Cam Spencer knocked down his first 3-pointer of the night to get the scoring going for the reigning national champs and has a game-high seven points.

Tough matchup for Braden Smith

Interesting to see Dan Hurley starting out with Stephon Castle guarding Purdue point guard Braden Smith. At 6-foot-6, Castle may have the size and length to disrupt Smith, who struggled with turnovers in the Boilermakers' semifinal victory. The onus is going to be on Smith, Fletcher Loyer and Lance Jones to rise to the occasion tonight and match UConn's elite backcourt play. At the first media timeout, that trio is a combined 1 of 1 from the floor with a 3-point play from Lance Jones accounting for the entirety of the Purdue backcourt's offensive contributions.

What to watch for in UConn-Purdue

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Good evening from State Farm Stadium, where No. 1 overall seed UConn takes on No. 1 seed Purdue in the 2024 men's NCAA Tournament championship. UConn looking to go back-to-back for the first time since Florida in 2006 and 2007. Purdue trying to win its first-ever men's national championship. All the storylines!

UConn (36-3) is a 7-point favorite in this one after winning each of its NCAA Tournament games by double figures. But I talked with some people in the Purdue universe who are cautiously optimistic about their chances. They think they have a real shot (they do!) but they also feel they HAVE to take care of the ball to keep the pressure on UConn. Can't beat themselves. If they can stay out of their own way they feel they have the horses to go the distance and potentially pull this off.

No team has really given UConn much of a challenge in weeks, but no team, I'd argue, has the balance, shooting and star power -- led by 7-foot-4 big man Zach Edey -- that the Boilermakers have. And for kicks: Purdue fans are VERY well-represented here in Glendale. Boilers fans showed up big time.

UConn's key advantage in the championship game

While the focus on this title game matchup is between Purdue's Zach Edey and UConn's Donovan Clingan, guard play still matters in the NCAA Tournament. UConn has one of the best guards in the country in Tristen Newton and a future lottery pick (Stephon Castle) in the backcourt. CBS Sports Adi Joseph broke down why UConn has the advantage in the backcourt.

UConn vs. Purdue: Step aside, Zach Edey, as Huskies have crucial size advantage -- in backcourt

How previous title games between No. 1 seeds ended

The matchup for the national championship game is set for Monday night in Glendale, Arizona, and it will feature No. 1 overall seed and reigning national champion  UConn  facing No. 1 seed  Purdue . The last game of the 2023-24 college basketball season will mark the 10th matchup between No. 1 seeds for the national title.

Here is a look at the previous nine title game matchups between No. 1 seeds.

2024 NCAA championship game: UConn vs. Purdue is 10th time No. 1 seeds meet with title on the line

How Purdue and UConn reached the title game

Purdue's road to the title game included wins over No. 16 seed  Grambling  in the first round, No. 8 seed  Utah State  in the second round, No. 5 seed  Gonzaga  in the Sweet 16 and No. 2 seed  Tennessee  in the Elite Eight. The Boilermakers eliminated NC State last weekend to advance.

UConn opened the NCAA Tournament with a 91-52 win over No. 16  Stetson  and defeated No. 9 seed  Northwestern  75-58 to advance to the second weekend. In the Sweet 16, a title game rematch from last season, the Huskies knocked off No. 5 seed  San Diego State  82-52 and then steamrolled No. 3  Illinois  77-52 in the Elite Eight. No. 4 seed Alabama offered the toughest to this point, but UConn pulled away down the stretch for the 86-72 win.

Who has the edge in UConn vs. Purdue?

The matchup between 7-foot-4 Purdue star Zach Edey and 7-foot-2 UConn center Donovan Clingan is the most anticipated individual battle of the season. The dueling giants patrol the paint with force and dominate games in unique ways. Edey is a ruthlessly efficient scorer, while Clingan is a shot-swatting defender and ubiquitous lob threat on offense.

CBS Sports' David Cobb broke down who has the edge in the backcourt, frontcourt, bench and more.

2024 NCAA championship: Breaking down who has the edge in UConn vs. Purdue matchup

Can Purdue compete its redemption story?

Last spring, Purdue lost to No. 16 seed FDU in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Boilermakers became only the second No. 1 seed to lose in the first round, joining Virginia's loss to UMBC in 2018. Virginia won the title the following season, and Purdue will have a chance to do the same on Monday.

Purdue remembers last year's loss to a No. 16 seed, but knows Virginia won a title after it did the same thing

Storylines for the title game

Monday night's title tilt between  UConn  and  Purdue  (9:20 p.m. ET, TBS and  March Madness Live ) will be just the 10th meeting of No. 1 seeds in the national championship game since seeding began in 1979. And as Dan Hurley said on Saturday night, it truly is great for men's college basketball to have this kind of title game between two teams that have been at the top of the sport not just for this season but really over the last two years. The difference between the two obviously being that UConn won the national championship last year while Purdue was the second-ever No. 1 seed to lose to a No. 16 seed in the first round of the tournament.

Expert picks for UConn vs. Purdue

Purdue's matchup with UConn will be on for the ages. Our CBS Sports experts made their picks on who will cut down the nets. The reigning national champions are a 6.5-point favorite, and Matt Norlander, David Cobb, and Chip Patterson are rolling the Huskies to cover the spread.

2024 NCAA championship game predictions: UConn vs. Purdue expert picks, odds, March Madness bracket

Purdue's Zach Edey vs. UConn's Donovan Clingan is the key matchup

College basketball's biggest game of the season will be played Monday night inside State Farm Stadium. So, it's only fitting that on the sport's biggest stage with the biggest possible stakes, the head-to-head matchup between the two biggest players --  Zach Edey of  Purdue  and  Donovan Clingan  of  UConn  -- will likely determine which team cuts down the nets in the NCAA Tournament championship game.

C.J. Snare, the lead singer of the pop-metal band FireHouse, died on Friday from cardiac arrest. He was 64.

“Today is a sad day for Rock N Roll,” the band posted on its Facebook page . “It is with great sorrow we are letting the world know we have lost our brother: CJ Snare, the rock and roll warrior, lead vocalist, and a founding member of Firehouse...As you are all aware, CJ was expected to be back on stage with the band this summer after recovering from surgery. We are all in complete shock with CJ’s untimely passing.”

Snare’s bombastic vocal work and keyboard arrangements helped make FireHouse singles like “Don’t Treat Me Bad,” “Reach For the Sky” and “Love of a Lifetime” staples of the early ’90s hair-metal scene. Snare co-founded the group in 1987 in Charlotte, N.C., and its 1990 self-titled debut LP went double-platinum.

Wayne Kramer, the influential guitarist of Michigan’s hard rock band MC5, has died. He was 75. No cause of death was given.

Feb. 2, 2024

While the band’s popularity waxed and waned in influence as hair-metal turned to grunge in the ’90s, the group maintained a global fanbase and were especially popular in Asia, and continued to tour headline dates and hard rock festivals. Its most recent album, 2011’s “Full Circle,” featured re-recordings of old material.

In September, Snare announced that he was taking a brief leave from the band to recover from abdominal surgery. Last month, Snare wrote that, post-surgery, he was “Feeling Stronger Everyday ! I’ll be back on stage with FireHouse before you know it. Health is first so making a FULL recovery ❤️‍🩹 before my return.”

“CJ was arguably one of the best vocal talents of a generation, touring the world with Firehouse non stop the past 34 years,” the band’s statement continued. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to the entire Snare family, Katherine Little, friends, and all our beloved fans all over the world. ‘Reach for the Sky’ CJ! You will be forever missed by family, friends, fans and your band mates. You’re singing with the angels now.”
