UK Visitor Visa (Tourist Visa Advice!)

IN THIS SECTION

There are many reasons why you might require a UK visitor visa to come to the UK, from seeing the sights to seeing friends or family.

If you’re from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland, the Standard Visitor Visa allows you to visit the UK, usually for a period of up to 6 months.

The UK Visitor visa requires an application to be made from outside the UK, which will be assessed to assess whether you meet the requirements under the visitor rules and qualify as a genuine visitor. You will need to provide supporting documents that prove you qualify for a visitor visa. Failure to show that you meet the visa requirements will result in a refusal and loss of your application fee.

What is a UK visitor visa?

The UK Standard Visitor visa replaced a number of previous categories of visitor visas. It allows visitors to come to Britain for a short stay for a number of permissible reasons, including leisure (for tourism, visiting family and friends), for  business-related activities or sporting or creative events, and other reasons such as receiving private medical treatment.

It is not possible to switch into a different visa category from the visitor visa once you are in the UK; you would need to return to your home country and apply from there for a different visa.

How long does a UK visitor visa last?

The visitor visa generally lasts for 6 months.

You can apply to stay longer if you’re coming to the UK for private medical treatment (up to 11 months) or you’re an academic on sabbatical and coming to the UK for research (up to 12 months) but you will also need to apply for a biometric residence permit.

Under the Approved Destination Status (ADS) agreement, Chinese nationals are allowed to enter the UK with an approved tour group for up to 30 days.

Long term visitor visa

The long-term visitor visa may be available if you are looking to make frequent visits over a longer period, such as 2, 5 or even 10 years, however you can only stay in the UK for up to 6 months at a time.

What are the permitted activities for visitors?

The visitor rules specify activities that are allowed under the route. The following are permissible activities:

  • Tourism, for example on a holiday
  • Visit family or friends
  • Volunteering for up to 30 days with a registered charity
  • Transiting through the UK to travel to another country
  • Certain business activities, for example attending a meeting or interview
  • Taking part in a school exchange programme
  • Undertake a recreational course of up to 30 days, for example a dance course
  • Study, do a placement or take an exam – this cannot be the main purpose of the visit and is limited to a maximum of 30 days
  • Visiting as an academic, senior doctor or dentist
  • For medical reasons

You are not allowed to do the following under a visitor visa:

  • Undertake paid or unpaid work for a UK company or as a self-employed person
  • Claim benefits or access public funds
  • Reside in the UK for long periods using frequent and/or successive visits
  • Get married or register a civil partnership, or give notice of marriage or civil partnership (instead, apply for the  Marriage Visitor Visa )

It may be that the visitor visa is not appropriate and alternative immigration options will need to be considered. For example, the permitted paid engagement visa may apply if a UK company is paying you to come to the UK as an expert in your profession.

Visitors should also prepare to travel with supporting documents as they may be asked to present proof of eligibility by UK border officials.

UK visitor visa requirements

The visitor visa is limited in its eligibility. Your stay must generally be for no longer than 6 months and you have to leave the UK by the expiry date.

Your reason for travel will also be critical to your eligibility and it will be important that you understand what is allowed under the UK visitor visa to ensure you do not breach these conditions for the duration of your stay in the UK.

Applying for the UK visitor visa

Applicants must ensure they comply with the regulations and evidence their eligibility through the visa application process.

To apply for the UK visitor visa, you will need to be outside the UK. You complete the online application form and provide supporting documents to evidence your status as a genuine visitor. You will be required to attend an appointment at a visa appointment centre in your country of residence, where you will be interviewed about your application and your biometric information will be taken.

As part of your visa application you will need to prove to the caseworker that you will not be staying for more than 6 months and that you have enough money to maintain yourself (and any dependants travelling with you) during your time in the UK and to fund your return travel.

Supporting documents

Your circumstances will dictate the exact documents to provide with your application to support your case. As a minimum, you will need to verify your identity with your current passport or other valid travel identification, valid for the whole of your stay in the UK and with a blank page for the visa.

Additional supporting documents should also be provided to prove:

  • Planned travel dates and itinerary including accommodation details
  • Personal information such as home address and parents’ names
  • Travel history (past 10 years)
  • Work information such as your employer’s name and address
  • Contact information of the people you will visit
  • You have a genuine relationship with the person you are visiting
  • Details of any convictions
  • Intention to leave the UK on visa expiry. Evidence could include proof of a job or studies in your home country, or family living in your home country.
  • Sufficient funds to support you and your dependants in the UK for the duration of your visit. This could be funded by you of the person you are visiting in the UK. You will not be allowed to access public funds. Proof should include recent bank statements and payslips. An estimate of the total cost of the trip should be provided, as well as details of your income.

Any documents not in English or Welsh must be provided as certified translations.

After completing the form, you will need to attend a visa application centre overseas to have your fingerprints and photograph taken.

Visitor visa processing times

Under normal Home Office processing standards , visitor visa applications from overseas usually takes around 3 weeks. However, ongoing delays in processing services mean visit visa applications are currently taking 6 weeks, and in some cases longer.

You can apply up to three months before your intended date of travel. Fast tracked processing within 5 working days is available in some visa application centres for a premium fee.

How much does a visitor visa cost?

Currently, the UK visitor visa costs £100 for the standard 6 month stay. If you are travelling for medical reasons, the cost is £200 for six months, or £200 for academic visitors .

Longer-term visit visas cost £376 for the 2-year visit visa, £670 for the 5-year visit visa or £837 for the 10-year visit visa.

Can you stay in the UK for longer than six months?

Generally speaking, all Standard UK visitor visas are short-term visas with a six-month maximum stay cap. Immigration regulations also prevent you from getting around this restriction by utilising a guest visa or making many, frequent, or consecutive trips, although you are free to enter and exit the UK whenever you like while your visa is still in effect.

However, citizens of China, Pakistan, India, and other non-EEA nations can apply for a long-term visit visa in order to go to the UK. These are chargeable extras that can be reserved for terms of two, five, or 10 years.

Be aware that you are still limited to a single visit lasting no longer than six months with these visas. You may, however, enter and exit the UK more than once throughout the permitted time. If you know you’ll need to visit the UK repeatedly over the course of a set amount of time, applying for a long-term visitor visa in the UK is a terrific option.

Academic visits from outside the EEA and people seeking private medical care in the UK do have another option for a longer stay. The Biometric Residence Permit is what it is called (BRP). You will need to provide biometric data about yourself, including your fingerprints, a photo, your immigration status, and more, but doing so will extend your stay in the UK over six months. This procedure, called biometric enrolment, still necessitates the presentation of proof of adequate financial support for your stay.

Visitor visa application refused?

If your UK visitor visa application. has been refused, your options could include reapplying and making a new application; submitting an appeal, where the grounds are on human rights; applying for a Judicial Review of the decision.

Your options will depend on your specific circumstances. Take professional advice to decide what you should do next.

Need assistance?

Travellers to the UK should note that even with a valid visitor visa in place, you may still be questioned at the UK border by immigration officials, to verify that you are a genuine visitor and will comply with the visitor visa rules. Where officials are concerned that you may stay longer than your visa date, or if your activities are prohibited under the visitor rules, you may be denied entry.

UK TOURIST VISA APPLICATION PROCESS

United Kingdom UK Tourist Visa Requirements - Visa Application

First, check if you need a visitor visa to travel to the UK in the “UK tourist visa requirements by nationality” section above.

Alternatively, you can check your eligibility and requirements on the UK gov website .

Validity of UK tourist visa

UK tourist visas are valid for 6 months from the date of visa issue.

Example: If your UK visa was issued on January 15, the visa will be valid until July 15.

NOTE There have been instances where visas were issued with validity starting from the date of travel mentioned in the visa application.

When to apply for UK visa

You can apply for a UK visa up to 3 months in advance.

Example: If you plan to visit the UK on April 15, you can apply for your UK visa on or after January 16.

Also, keep in mind that you must apply for your UK visa at least 3 weeks prior to your travel, otherwise, you may not receive your visa on time. There are no refunds if you receive your visa after your travel date.

IMPORTANT The UK visa process can take up to 3 weeks and even longer in some cases. I strongly recommend applying for your UK visa at least 2 months in advance.

How long can you stay in the UK?

The UK tourist visa allows you to stay up to 180 days in the UK. But if you stay that long continuously in the UK on a tourist visa, you will have serious trouble getting another UK visa in the future or entering the UK next time.

Here is my advice. Stick to the days you have mentioned in your UK visa application. A few days more or less is fine. But staying months on your UK tourist visa will pretty much look like you “live in the UK” rather than “vacation/holiday”.

Application procedure

The UK visa application is online. You must apply for the visa online at the UK Visas and Immigration website

Below are the steps you will go through for your UK tourist visa application

  • Go to the UK Visas and Immigration website
  • Select your preferred language, type of visa, your country, nearest visa application center, etc
  • Create a login using email and password
  • Complete in the application form
  • Sign the declaration
  • Pay visa fee
  • Submit the application
  • Download and print the submitted visa application form
  • Make an appointment at your nearest UK visa application center
  • Attend the appointment at your nearest UK visa application center
  • Submit your passport, visa application and supporting documents at the visa application center
  • If applying from the US, Australia or New Zealand, mail your passport, visa application and biometrics receipt to your nearest visa application center
  • Pickup/receive the passport when the visa decision is made

Below are some of the information you will provide in the application form

  • Your travel dates to the UK
  • Your hotel address and telephone number in the UK
  • Your total estimated cost for the trip
  • Your present home address and how many years you’ve lived there
  • Your parents’ names and their dates of birth
  • Your annual income
  • Your travel history for the past 10 years
  • Your employer details including the address and telephone number

  • Proof of funds ( bank statements or payslips for the last 6 months)
  • Proof of legal residence (if applying from a 3rd country. you must submit a copy of your visa or residence permit of that country)

Do you need flight tickets and hotel bookings for the UK visa application?

UKVI has stopped asking for flight tickets and hotel bookings for UK visa applications. But some nationalities are still being asked to submit flight tickets and hotel bookings.

When you complete your online UK visa application, you will see a checklist of documents to be uploaded. Check if you are asked to submit flight tickets and hotel bookings.

Even if you are asked to submit your flight tickets and hotel bookings, you should not book any flights/hotel until your UK visa is approved.

For flights, get a price quote from British Airways which can be used as a flight itinerary for your UK visa application. Visa ticket booking agencies such as DummyTicket offer flight itineraries for the UK visa for $19, valid for 2-3 weeks.

For hotel, book a refundable or pay at check-in hotel on booking.com or Expedia . Cancel the booking after your visa is approved.

For more options, check out my detailed flight itinerary and hotel reservation articles.

Photo requirements

A passport-size photo is only required if are exempt from biometrics. All tourist visa applicants MUST give their biometrics. Your fingerprints and digital photos are taken during your biometrics appointment.

Since all tourist visa applicants MUST give their biometrics, a passport-size photo is not required. But, I suggest bringing one with you on the day of your biometrics appointment just in case.

Visa application fee

The UK tourist visa application fee is £95 GBP. You will pay this fee in your local currency. Due to exchange rates, you may end up paying about £2 – £5 GBP more.

You can use the UK home office visa fee wizard to find out the exact visa fee that you would need to pay in your local currency.

If you are applying for a long-term UK tourist visa, below is the visa fee for 2, 5 and 10-year tourist visas.

  • 2 years: £361 GBP
  • 5 years: £655 GBP
  • 10 years: £822 GBP

Visa appointment

As part of the online application process, you will be prompted to make a visa appointment at your nearest UK Visa Application Center . Visa Application Centers are run by either VFSGlobal or TLSContact in conjunction with UK Visas and Immigration.

On the day of the appointment, you will give your biometrics (fingerprints and photo) and submit your original documents. You must bring all your original documents along with one photocopy of each including your passport.

Applicants from the USA, Australia (Adelaide and Hobart only) and New Zealand

You must give your biometrics at your nearest Biometric Enrollment Center and later send/post your documents to the nearest UK Visa Application Center.

During your online UK visa application, you will be prompted to make a biometrics appointment at your nearest Biometric enrollment center.

  • Biometric enrollment centers in the USA are run by the US Homeland Security.
  • Biometric enrollment centers in Australia are run by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.
  • Biometric enrollment centers in New Zealand are run by Immigration New Zealand.

The biometrics appointment takes about 10-15 minutes. You will give your fingerprints and photo. You will receive an acknowledgment stamp on the biometric appointment confirmation.

You must then mail your original passport, visa application, biometric confirmation with the stamp, supporting documents and return postage to the UK Visa Application Center you have selected during your online visa application.

You will be notified via email when the UK Visa Application Center receives your documents.

Visa processing time

The UK tourist visa processing takes up to 3 weeks. There have been incidents where UKVI has taken over 2 months to process, especially when the visa applications are “not straightforward”.

UKVI considers a visa application “not straightforward” if additional information is required to process the visa. Additional information can be, verifying information, background check or requesting additional documents. UKVI usually notifies you in such cases and requests any additional documentation necessary.

Keeping such incidents in mind, ALWAYS apply for your UK visa at least 2 months prior to your travel.

If you have to travel sooner, you should purchase the “Priority Visa Service” while applying online. Or at least before you mail/submit your documents. This way your visa application will be processed within 5 working days.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE When I applied for my UK visa, the visa processing time was about 2 weeks. I had a planned trip to Canada before my trip to the UK. My trip to Canada was in 4 weeks, so I thought I had enough time to apply for my UK visa. However after I submitted my passport, the email confirmation said the visa process would take up to 4 weeks. I panicked. I went ahead and paid for the priority visa service. I panicked again. Then I emailed a formal visa withdrawal request, so I could at least get my passport back and make my trip to Canada. However, my visa was processed within 2 days of paying the priority visa service fee. Please do not make the same mistake as I did. Apply for your UK visa at least 2 months prior to your travel.

Visa application status tracking

Online visa application tracking is NOT AVAILABLE on the UK Visas and Immigration website. To track your UK visa application status, you must use UK Visas and Immigration’s email or phone option, which unfortunately is NOT FREE.

UKVI charges for all phone and email inquiries.

Below are UK Visa and Immigration phone, email details and charges.

PHONE Telephone: +44 2034811736 Available 24 hours from Monday to Friday Calls cost £1.37 per minute plus any international call charges

EMAIL Email communication must be initiated via Email UK Visas and Immigration Email inquiries cost £5.48. Follow-up emails after that are not charged. You will receive a response to your email within 2 working days.

You must give out your credit card information for billing when you start the phone inquiry. For email, you must fill out the payment form and then you can submit your email inquiry.

PERSONAL OPINION Email inquiries generally receive a standard response saying that your application is “in process”. Phone inquiries are slightly better and cheaper.

Priority visa service

If you would need to travel to the UK urgently, you can opt for the “Priority Visa Service”.  This service is expensive and may not be available in all countries. If available, you will see the option in your online UK visa application.

  • Priority visa service fee: £220 GBP
  • Visa processing time: Guaranteed in 5 working days

Priority visa service must be purchased during your online visa application. This will ensure your visa is processed within 5 days.

Purchasing this service after you have submitted/mailed your documents will take much longer than 5 working days. You must first pay the fee on the Visa Application Center (VAC) website and then email the receipt to the Visa Application Center where you have submitted/sent your documents. It can take more than a day for the VAC staff to locate your packet and push it into the priority queue

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE I purchased my priority service after I had mailed my documents. My visa application was approved within two days of buying the priority visa service.

Super priority visa service

If you would need to travel to the UK immediately, you can opt for “Super Priority Visa Service”. This service comes with a hefty price tag, so purchase this service only in super urgent, emergency cases.

  • Super priority visa service fee: £956 GBP
  • Visa processing time: Guaranteed in 24 hours

Cancel your UK visa application

If you haven’t given your biometrics at the visa application center yet, you can cancel your UK visa application and get a full refund of your visa fee. The procedure to cancel your UK visa application depends on at what stage your application is in.

Application not submitted and fee not paid : If you haven’t paid your fee and haven’t submitted your application, there is a “Delete Application” option that will delete your current visa application.

Application not submitted but fee already paid : If you have already paid your fee and have not yet submitted your application, you can still delete your application but you may have to send a formal refund request in writing to the visa application center.

Application submitted, fee paid but haven’t given your biometrics : If you haven’t given your biometrics at VFS/BLS, you can cancel your application and request for a refund. The refunds take 4 weeks.

Application submitted, fee paid, biometric given , and documents/passport already submitted: If you have already given your biometrics and submitted your documents/passport, you CANNOT cancel your visa application anymore. You can only WITHDRAW your visa application. You must email the visa application center a formal withdrawal request. Upon receipt of the withdrawal request, the visa application center will return/mail your passport back. Any visa fee and priority service fee paid are not refundable.

IMPORTANT Even though UKVI says the refunds are processed in 4 weeks, it usually takes 8 weeks or even longer. There have been instances where applicants waited several weeks and some even gave up on their refunds. However, I have seen applicants having success in getting their refunds by reminding UKVI with phone calls or emails. It costs about $5 USD to email them, but it helps in getting your refund eventually.

Withdraw your UK visa application

The UK visa application center keeps the passport for the entirety of the visa process, which could be 3 weeks or more. There may be emergencies where you need to have your passport with you. The only way to request your passport back is by formally withdrawing your visa application.

If you withdraw your application, the visa fee and any priority service fee you have paid are NOT refundable.

To withdraw a visa application, you must submit a withdrawal request along with the reason for the withdrawal to the visa application center via email. It might take up to 72 hours for the consulate to locate your packet and send it back to you.

You must first call/email the UK Visas and Immigration mentioning your intention to withdraw your application. They will guide you through the process of withdrawing your application. Usually, the UK visa application withdrawal request should be a signed document with personal information including the GWF number. This document must be printed and signed. It must be scanned and emailed to the visa application center. Below is a sample withdrawal request letter.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I hereby request to withdraw my UK visa application. I understand that the visa fee is non-refundable. I also understand that my package may not be shipped for up to 72 hours.

<Your signature here> Signed: <Your full name> Date: <date>

IMPORTANT Cancellation or withdrawal is NOT a refusal. It WILL NOT affect your future UK visa applications. You don’t need to mention it in your future UK visa applications either.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

What is GWF number in UK visa application ?

GWF reference number is the unique visa application number that was provided to you on your visa application submission. You must provide your GWF number when calling or emailing UK Visas and Immigration. Without the GWF number, UK Visas and Immigration will not be able to provide you with a status update on your visa application.

What to do if my UK visa application is refused?

If your UK visa application is refused, the first thing is to understand the  reasons for your UK visa refusal . If the reason is due to missing information, proof of funds or documentation, make sure to fix these the next time you apply for your UK visa.

Write a detailed cover letter explaining the reasons for your previous visa refusal, missing information/documentation and any additional information/documentation that you have provided in the new application. This will help the ECOs cut to the chase and focus on the new information/documentation.

There is no “appeal” for UK visa. So, re-apply for your UK visa by making sure you have the new information, proofs and documents that were lacking previously. You must pay the visa fee again as the fee paid for your previous application was non-refundable.

If you do not know the reason for your visa refusal/denial, give at least 6 months before you apply for the visa again.

Can I get my UK visa application fee refund if denied?

No. The visa fee and any priority service fee paid are non-refundable if your visa application is denied. The visa fee is also non-refundable in incidents where the visa is approved for less number of days than requested.

I’m planning to visit the UK and Schengen countries on a single trip. Should I apply for my UK visa first or Schengen visa first?

If you plan to visit the UK and Schengen countries on a single trip, ALWAYS apply for your UK visa first.

UKVI keeps the passport for the entirety of the visa process and there is no visa status tracking. Calls and emails to customer service are charged. Even if you pay and contact, you will usually get a canned response. If your UK visa is refused, there is no “appeal”. You can only re-apply, which means you have to repeat the entire process again.

On the other hand, the Schengen visa application process is much streamlined. There is application tracking, customer service and appeal.

I highly recommend applying for your UK visa first and get done with it. After that, apply for your Schengen visa.

When applying for your UK visa, show a “UK-only” itinerary for your UK visa. This eliminates the need for submitting your Schengen visa, flights in/out of the Schengen region, etc.

The UK tourist visa requirements are clear and easy to understand. But, the visa application process is long and expensive. Apply at least 2 months in advance, and follow all the proper steps and documentation. Tourist visas are usually multiple-entry with 6 months validity.

Complete UK Visitor Visa Guide: Application Requirements & How to Apply – Essential for UK Tourism

Visiting the United Kingdom (UK) is a dream for many. Whether it’s the allure of London’s cosmopolitan charm, the historical allure of Edinburgh, or the scenic beauty of the Lake District, the UK has something for every traveler. However, before you can embark on your journey, there’s one crucial step you need to take: securing a UK visitor visa. This guide will provide you with all the information you need to navigate the application process, from understanding the requirements to submitting your application.

Understanding the UK Visitor Visa

Uk visitor visa requirements, how to apply for a uk visitor visa, uk visitor visa from india, uk tourist visa requirements, uk holiday visa, final thoughts.

The UK visitor visa, also known as the standard visitor visa, allows individuals to enter the UK for tourism, business meetings, academic conferences, medical treatment, and to visit family. It’s important to note that this visa does not permit you to work or study in the UK. The standard visitor visa is typically valid for six months, but longer-term visas are available, including the 10 year visit visa UK offers.

Before you apply for a UK visitor visa, it’s essential to understand the requirements. The UK government requires that you:

  • Have a valid passport or other valid travel identification
  • Provide proof of your ability to support yourself during your trip (e.g., bank statements or payslips for the last six months)
  • Provide details of where you intend to stay and your travel plans – you shouldn’t pay for accommodation or travel until you get your visa
  • Pay the visa fee
  • Have a tuberculosis (TB) test result if you’re from a country where you have to take the test

Additional documents may be required depending on your circumstances. For example, if you’re applying for a family visit UK visa, you may need to provide proof of your relationship to the family member you’re visiting.

Applying for a UK visitor visa involves several steps:

  • Complete the online application form on the UK government’s official website.
  • Pay the visa fee. The cost varies depending on the length of the visa. For example, a standard six-month visa costs £95, while a 10-year visit visa UK costs £822.
  • Schedule an appointment at a visa application center. You will need to have your biometric information (fingerprints and a photo) taken.
  • Attend your appointment and submit your biometric information and supporting documents.
  • Wait for your visa decision. The processing time can vary, but you should typically receive a decision within three weeks.

If you’re applying for a visiting visa UK from India, the process is the same as outlined above. However, you will need to apply through the UK government’s official visa partner in India, VFS Global. You can complete the application online, pay the visa fee, and schedule your appointment at one of the VFS Global visa application centers in India.

If you’re visiting the UK for tourism, the requirements are the same as for a standard visitor visa. However, you may also need to provide additional information about your travel plans, such as your itinerary, hotel reservations, and proof of any pre-booked tours or activities.

The UK holiday visa is another term for the standard visitor visa. It allows you to visit the UK for a holiday or to see family and friends. The application process and requirements are the same as for the standard visitor visa.

Applying for a UK visitor visa can seem daunting, but with careful preparation and a clear understanding of the requirements, the process can be straightforward. Remember to check the latest information on the UK government’s official website or consult with a reputable travel visa company to ensure you have the most up-to-date information. Happy travels!

Introduction

Traveling to the United Kingdom, with its rich history, picturesque landscapes, and vibrant cities, is a dream for many. If you are planning a trip to the UK and require a tourist visa, this comprehensive guide will walk you through the steps to obtain one. Whether you are visiting famous landmarks like Big Ben in London, exploring the charming countryside of Scotland, or experiencing the cultural offerings of cities like Manchester or Edinburgh, a tourist visa is essential for a hassle-free journey.

The UK tourist visa, also known as a Standard Visitor Visa, allows individuals to enter the UK for tourism, visiting friends or family, or participating in short-term educational or business activities. It is crucial to understand the visa application process and fulfill the necessary requirements to ensure a successful application.

Obtaining a UK tourist visa involves several steps, such as determining your eligibility, gathering the required documents, completing the online application form, attending a biometric appointment, and submitting your application. Additionally, there are fees to be paid, and the progress of your application can be tracked online.

In this guide, we will carefully outline each step, providing you with the necessary information and tips to simplify the application process. By following these guidelines, you will be well-prepared to navigate the complexities of obtaining a UK tourist visa and embark on your memorable journey to the UK.

Step 1: Determine your eligibility for a UK tourist visa

Before beginning the application process, it is essential to determine whether you are eligible for a UK tourist visa. The eligibility criteria are defined by the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) and must be met in order to proceed with the application.

To be eligible for a UK tourist visa, you must:

  • Intend to visit the UK for no more than six months
  • Have sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay
  • Provide evidence of accommodation arrangements for your stay
  • Provide evidence of your intent to leave the UK at the end of your visit
  • Have no history of criminal activities or immigration violations
  • Not be involved in any activities that are not allowed under the tourist visa category

It is important to note that the UK tourist visa does not permit you to work or study in the country. If you plan to engage in any employment or educational activities during your visit, you may need to apply for a different visa category.

Once you have determined your eligibility, you can proceed to the next step of gathering the required documents to support your application. It is crucial to carefully review the specific documentation requirements outlined by the UKVI to ensure you have everything in order before proceeding with the application process.

Step 2: Gather the required documents

One of the most critical aspects of applying for a UK tourist visa is gathering the required documents to support your application. These documents serve as evidence of your eligibility and intentions during your visit to the UK. It is essential to gather and prepare these documents in advance to prevent any delays or issues with your application.

The specific documents you will need to provide may vary depending on your individual circumstances, but generally, you will need the following:

  • Valid passport: Ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond the date of your planned departure from the UK.
  • Completed visa application form: Fill out the online visa application form accurately and truthfully, providing all the required information.
  • Passport-sized photographs: Most applications require two recent color photographs of yourself, meeting the UKVI specifications.
  • Proof of accommodation: Provide documentation, such as hotel reservations or a letter of invitation from friends or family with whom you will be staying in the UK.
  • Proof of financial means: Demonstrate that you have enough funds to cover your expenses during your stay in the UK, such as bank statements, pay stubs, or sponsorship letters.
  • Travel itinerary: Provide a clear itinerary of your planned activities in the UK, including details of your accommodation, transportation, and any booked tours or events.
  • Travel insurance: It is advisable to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical expenses, trip cancellation, and loss or theft of belongings.
  • Additional supporting documents: Depending on your individual circumstances, you may need to provide additional documents such as proof of employment, educational enrollment, or marital status.

Remember to carefully review the UKVI guidelines and requirements to ensure you have all the necessary documents and meet the specific criteria for your application. Failure to provide the required documents or submitting incomplete or inaccurate information can lead to the rejection of your visa application.

Step 3: Complete the online application form

Completing the online application form is a crucial step in obtaining a UK tourist visa. The application form collects your personal information, travel details, and reasons for visiting the UK. It is important to provide accurate and complete information to avoid any delays or complications in the processing of your application.

To complete the online application form, follow these steps:

  • Create an account: Visit the official website of the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) and create an account to start your application. Make sure to have all the necessary documents and information readily available before you begin.
  • Provide personal information: Fill in your personal details, including your full name, date of birth, nationality, contact information, and passport details. Ensure that the information matches exactly as it appears on your passport.
  • Travel details: Specify the purpose of your visit as tourism and provide details of your travel itinerary, including your planned arrival and departure dates, the address of your accommodation, and any planned excursions or activities.
  • Biometric information: You will be required to provide biometric information as part of the application process. This usually involves having your fingerprints and photograph taken at a designated Visa Application Centre (VAC).
  • Health and character declarations: Answer the health and character-related questions honestly and accurately. If applicable, provide any relevant information about previous criminal convictions or medical conditions.
  • Review and submit: Before submitting your application, thoroughly review all the information you have entered to ensure its accuracy. Making any necessary corrections or updates at this stage is crucial.

Once you have completed the online application form, you will be required to pay the application fee. Only after the payment is made will your application be considered. It is important to keep a record of your application reference number for future use and to track the progress of your application.

Completing the online application form correctly and providing accurate information is key in ensuring a smooth visa application process. Taking the time to double-check all the details entered will help avoid any unnecessary delays or complications with your UK tourist visa application.

Step 4: Pay the application fee

After completing the online application form for a UK tourist visa, the next step is to pay the required application fee. The fee amount will depend on the type of visa you are applying for and the duration of your intended stay in the UK. It is important to note that the application fee is non-refundable, even if your visa application is rejected.

To pay the application fee, follow these guidelines:

  • Check the current visa fee: Visit the official UK government website or the website of the UK Visa Application Centre (VAC) in your country to determine the current application fee for a UK tourist visa. The fee may be subject to change, so it is essential to check the most up-to-date information.
  • Choose a payment method: The payment options may vary depending on your location and the specific VAC you are applying through. Generally, the most common payment methods include online payment through a debit or credit card or payment at the VAC in cash.
  • Make the payment: Follow the instructions provided on the payment portal or at the VAC to complete the payment process. Ensure that you provide the necessary details accurately and verify the transaction before proceeding.
  • Keep the payment receipt: Once the payment is made, ensure that you receive a payment receipt or confirmation. This will serve as proof of payment and should be kept securely for your records.

It is crucial to pay the application fee promptly after completing the online application form. Failure to pay the fee may result in the rejection of your visa application. Additionally, keep in mind that the processing of your application will not begin until the fee has been successfully paid.

Remember, the application fee is subject to change, so it is important to stay updated with the latest fee requirements. Always check official government sources or consult with the relevant Visa Application Centre for accurate and current information regarding the application fee for a UK tourist visa.

Step 5: Book your biometric appointment

As part of the UK tourist visa application process, you will need to attend a biometric appointment to provide your biometric information. This includes having your fingerprints and photograph taken at a designated Visa Application Centre (VAC). Booking your biometric appointment is a crucial step in the visa application process, and it is important to do so in a timely manner.

To book your biometric appointment, follow these steps:

  • Check the appointment availability: Visit the official website of the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) or the website of the Visa Application Centre (VAC) in your country to check for available appointment slots. It is advisable to book the appointment as soon as possible to secure your preferred date and time.
  • Provide required information: During the appointment booking process, you will need to provide personal information, including your passport details, visa application reference number, and other relevant details as requested. Ensure that you enter the information accurately to avoid any issues.
  • Select the location: Choose the VAC location where you would like to attend your biometric appointment. Consider factors such as proximity, convenience, and availability when making your selection.
  • Confirm your appointment: Once you have selected the desired appointment slot and location, confirm your booking. You may receive a confirmation email or receipt with the appointment details. Keep this information handy for future reference.

It is important to note that you must attend the biometric appointment in person. Failure to do so may result in the rejection of your visa application. Arrive at the VAC on time and ensure that you have all the required documents and information with you.

During the biometric appointment, a trained staff member will take your fingerprints and photograph as per the UKVI guidelines. It is essential to cooperate and follow their instructions to ensure that your biometric data is captured accurately.

Booking your biometric appointment is a crucial step in the UK tourist visa application process. By following the steps outlined above and attending the appointment as arranged, you will be one step closer to completing your visa application and embarking on your journey to the UK.

Step 6: Attend the biometric appointment

Attending the biometric appointment is a crucial step in the process of obtaining a UK tourist visa. This appointment allows the authorities to capture your biometric information, including your fingerprints and photograph, which will be used for identity verification and visa processing.

Here’s what you need to know about attending the biometric appointment:

  • Come prepared: Make sure to bring all the necessary documents and items to the appointment. This may include your passport, appointment confirmation, printed application form, and any other documentation specified by the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI).
  • Arrive early: It’s advisable to arrive at the Visa Application Centre (VAC) a few minutes before your scheduled appointment. This will allow you sufficient time to check in and complete any necessary paperwork.
  • Follow instructions: Once you’ve checked in, a staff member will guide you through the appointment process. Listen carefully to their instructions and provide the required information and documents as requested.
  • Provide biometric information: During the appointment, you will be asked to provide your fingerprints and have your photograph taken. Follow the instructions from the staff and cooperate to ensure accurate and high-quality biometric data is captured.
  • Ask questions if needed: If you have any doubts or concerns during the appointment, don’t hesitate to ask the staff for clarification. They are there to assist you and ensure a smooth process.
  • Keep the receipt: After completing the biometric appointment, you will receive a receipt or confirmation. Keep this document safe, as it will serve as proof that you have attended the appointment.

Attending the biometric appointment is a mandatory requirement for obtaining a UK tourist visa. Make sure to follow the instructions provided and provide accurate information during the appointment. Any discrepancies or false information may lead to delays or a visa rejection.

Once the biometric information has been successfully collected, it will be linked to your visa application, and the processing of your application will continue. You can now move on to the next step of submitting your application.

Step 7: Submit your application

After completing the biometric appointment, the next step in the UK tourist visa application process is to submit your application. This involves sending your application, along with all the necessary supporting documents, to the designated UK Visa Application Centre (VAC) or embassy.

To submit your application, follow these steps:

  • Package your application: Gather all the required documents, including your completed application form, supporting documents, and any additional paperwork requested by the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). Ensure that your documents are organized, clear, and complete.
  • Check visa application center requirements: Review the specific requirements provided by the VAC or embassy where you will be submitting your application. This may include guidelines on packaging, size and format of documents, and any additional instructions.
  • Pay for the courier service (if applicable): Depending on the location, you may need to pay for a courier service to have your application and documents delivered to the UKVI. Follow the instructions provided by the VAC or embassy to arrange for this service, if necessary.
  • Submit your application: Visit the VAC or embassy in person to submit your application or follow the instructions for mailing your application. Ensure that you have all the required documents, including your passport, application form, supporting documents, biometric receipt, and any applicable fees.
  • Obtain a receipt: Once you have submitted your application, you will receive a receipt, which serves as proof that your application has been submitted. Keep this receipt safe, as you may need it to track the status of your application.

It is crucial to carefully review your application and supporting documents before submission to ensure accuracy and completeness. Any missing or incorrect information may result in delays or even rejection of your visa application.

After submitting your application, the processing time will depend on various factors, including the volume of applications and the complexity of your case. It is important to track the progress of your application, which can usually be done online using the reference number provided on your application receipt.

By carefully following the steps outlined above, you will be on your way to submitting a well-prepared and complete UK tourist visa application. With patience and thoroughness, you maximize your chances of a successful outcome and can look forward to exploring all the wonders that the UK has to offer.

Step 8: Track the progress of your application

After submitting your UK tourist visa application, it’s important to stay informed about its progress. Tracking the status of your application allows you to know when a decision has been made and when you can expect to receive your passport with the visa.

Here are the steps to track the progress of your application:

  • Keep your application reference number: When you submitted your application, you received a reference number. This number is crucial for tracking purposes. Keep it safe and easily accessible.
  • Visit the official website: Go to the official UK government website or the website of the Visa Application Centre (VAC) where you submitted your application.
  • Locate the tracking feature: Look for the tracking feature on the website. It may be labelled as “Track your application” or a similar option. Click on it to proceed.
  • Enter your reference number: Enter your application reference number in the appropriate field. Fill in any other necessary information requested.
  • Check your application status: Submit the information and wait for the tracking results. The status of your application will be displayed, indicating whether it is still under consideration or a decision has been made.
  • Stay informed: Keep checking the tracking system regularly for updates on your application. Be patient, as the processing times can vary depending on various factors.

It’s important to note that while tracking your application can provide an estimate of its progress, it does not guarantee a specific outcome. The final decision on your visa application will be communicated to you through the appropriate channels.

If there are any concerns or if you believe your application is taking longer than expected, you may contact the VAC or embassy where you submitted your application for further assistance. They can provide additional information or insights regarding the processing of your application.

By keeping track of your UK tourist visa application, you can stay informed about its progress and be prepared to receive your passport with the visa once a decision has been made. It brings assurance and peace of mind knowing that you are actively monitoring the status of your application.

Step 9: Collect your passport with the visa

After the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) has processed your UK tourist visa application, the final step is to collect your passport, which will now contain the visa. This is an exciting moment as it means you have been granted permission to travel to the United Kingdom.

Here’s what you need to do to collect your passport with the visa:

  • Wait for notification: Once a decision has been made on your application, you will be notified by the Visa Application Centre (VAC) or embassy where you submitted your application. This notification could be via email, phone call, or SMS, depending on the preference you indicated during the application process.
  • Arrange for collection: Follow the instructions provided to arrange for the collection of your passport. Some VACs may offer a courier service to deliver your passport to your chosen address, while others may require you to collect it in person. Ensure that you adhere to the specified method of collection.
  • Bring necessary documents: When collecting your passport, ensure that you have the required documents with you, which may include your original application receipt, identification documents, and any additional paperwork specified by the VAC or embassy.
  • Check the visa: Once you receive your passport, carefully check the visa sticker to ensure that all the details are correct. Verify that the visa type, dates, and personal information are accurate and as expected. If there are any discrepancies, immediately bring them to the attention of the VAC or embassy.
  • Safely store your passport: After collecting your passport with the visa, keep it in a safe and secure place. It is an essential document, and you will need it for your travel to the United Kingdom. Make sure to also make copies or scan the pages for backup purposes.

Remember, it’s important to keep your passport and visa secure during your entire journey. Make sure to have multiple copies of your passport and visa in case of loss or theft. It’s also advisable to inform a trusted person of your travel plans and share copies of your travel documents with them.

With your passport now containing the UK tourist visa, you are ready to embark on your journey to the United Kingdom. Make sure to familiarize yourself with the visa conditions and any additional requirements specified by the UKVI to ensure a smooth entry into the country.

Overview of the UK Visit Visa

As a prospective visitor to the UK, there are several requirements you will need to meet before you are permitted entry into the country. Primarily, Home Office entry clearance officers are most concerned with ensuring that only those who are genuine and credible visitors are given entry. Another aspect of the checks carried out by the Home Office on visitors to the UK is to ensure that they have both accommodation and sufficient money while they are here.

This category of visitors may qualify for any of several visa types which include: General Visitor Visa, Family Visitor Visa, Child Visitor Visa, Business Visitor Visa including Visas for doctors, dentists and academics, Sports Visitor Visa, Entertainer Visitor Visa, Prospective Entrepreneur Visa, Private Medical Treatment Visa and Approved Destination Status (ADS) Visa are replaced with the UK Visit Visa.

Who can Write a Sponsor Letter?

The consular office can consider a visa sponsorship letter in support of a visa application when the letter is written by a UK citizen. The letter can also be written by a lawful UK permanent resident. The resident is required to have a well-defined relationship with the visa applicant. They could be relatives or friends, or partners.

The UK resident should have a registered place of residence in the UK. They should also have enough room to accommodate the visitor to which they issue an invitation letter. They must cater for their visitor in terms of accommodation for the entire period of their visit. The only exception to this is when the visitor can provide clear evidence of alternative accommodation.

Our team of immigration experts has extensive experience in helping sponsors like you bring visitors to the UK.

How to Write a Sponsor Letter?

The process of writing a visit visa sponsor letter is not that complicated. Especially if you already have experience in writing sponsor letters, either for a visit visa or a visa to any other country.

The letter should be short and clear, giving all the necessary information on the sponsor’s identity as well as the expenses of the applicant that they will be covering, and their relationship. Do not give any information that you cannot support with documents, which you have to submit alongside the letter of sponsorship.

Structure of a Sponsor Letter

  • The letter should be addressed to the staff of the embassy with the opening salutation ‘Dear sir/madam’. Next, give your name and other personal details as to where you live and what you work, the reason why you are writing the letter and for whom.
  • Give information on the expenses you are going to cover and how you will be doing that. Give the dates when the trip of the applicant will take place, and if he/she will be staying over at your place in one of the Schengen states, mention that, giving the address of the place.
  • If you will be spending time with the applicant, while in Schengen, it would be nice if you wrote just a few words on the places you are planning to visit together, kind of like a short one-paragraph travel itinerary.
  • Do not forget to mention that you “have attached supporting documents” to the letter of support you are sending. Sign the letter at the end, under your name. Do not leave out details like the date when you wrote the letter.
  • Despite the guideline given above, you need to take into account some small pieces of advice when writing the letter. Below find the ultimate tips on how to write a sponsorship letter for a Schengen visa.
  • Do not make it too personal – it is one thing to explain in the letter your relationship with the applicant, and another to tell throughout the whole letter how much you have missed them, love them, and want to see them. The consular officer does not care about that, he just wants to make sure you will be paying the expenses of the applicant. Besides, such details will make the letter longer, which you are strongly advised not to do.
  • Do not give unnecessary details – above we advised you to explain why you are sponsoring the applicant, as well as to give details on the expenses you have to cover. However, do not go way too much into details giving unnecessary information such as, where you will be eating breakfast each day and how much each breakfast will cost you. The consular officer is not interested to hear that. Instead, just show the available amount of money that you are sponsoring the applicant with, and explain the expenses he or she will be able to cover with that money, i.e. accommodation and food.
  • Do not make it too long – as we said a few times now, try to avoid unnecessary information and keep your letter short and clear. The consular officers do not have the time, nor the wish to read a two-page letter, which could have instead been shortened to a few paragraphs.

Another important thing you shall not forget, aside from your name, occupation and home address, take care to also submit your phone number and email, so in case of need, the embassy will be able to contact you and you will have the chance to clarify any of the information if needed.

Supporting Documents for the Sponsor Letter

There are no general rules guiding what documents sponsors providing an invitation letter should submit. Inviting someone to live with you in the UK may require the following documents:

  • A scanned copy of your passport or ID to confirm your identification
  • Evidence of your immigration status in the UK, such as a visa
  • Proof of your residence in the UK, such as a mortgage statement or tenancy agreement
  • Proof of funds where you undertake to financially support the applicant during their stay in the UK, such as bank statements or pay slips
  • If you are arranging accommodation for the applicant, you will need to provide evidence of this in the form of a letter from the landlord/agent, or confirmation of a bed and breakfast/hotel booking
  • If the visit is for a special family occasion, for example, celebrating a wedding, birth or important anniversary, consider including an invitation giving details of the event, as well as when and where it is to take place
  • Any other document that you believe will help the applicant in getting their visa, for example, a short travel itinerary of the places you plan to visit together in the UK.

Race Across the World review: Return of BBC smash proves travel is best without a smartphone

The hit bbc travel-adventure show returns for its fourth series, and is best understood as being like tourism but in a more intense, concentrated and indeed exhausting form, article bookmarked.

I have to admit that I find travel so exhausting that I’m at a loss as to why anyone would willingly watch an episode of Race Across the World , let alone have the stamina to keep up with the whole nine hours of viewing that lies before us.

Having tagged along vicariously for the first leg of their journey, north to south across most of Japan, Race is best understood as being like tourism but in a more intense, condensed, concentrated and indeed exhausting form. The five pairs of contestants, ranging from annoying siblings barely in their twenties to a reassuringly mellow couple in their sixties, are tasked with travelling from snowy Sapporo in northern Japan down to the paradise island of Lombok in Indonesia, via various waypoints in Korea, Cambodia and Malaysia – some 15,000 kilometres in total.

Just like any backpacking holiday, the idea is that you move as fast as possible for the least cost (the budget is fixed at £1,390, the price of two air tickets from Japan to Indonesia), and in order to make the best of the adventure try and squeeze in some sightseeing, local culture and pick up a bit of casual work along the way to pay the bills. So it is a race, in the sense that you want to get to the checkpoints and to Lombok first, and win the £20,000 prize money, but to do it within budget and with some actual pleasure along the way. It’s all about balancing these priorities, and that essential nuance gives the show its charm. The only forms of transport that are banned are planes and the ultra-fast Japanese bullet trains, which would spoil the vibe. They should probably call it “The Sort-of Race Across the World”, if accuracy is the thing.

This, therefore, isn’t a full-on scramble, like some version of Challenge Anneka or a leisurely, carefree Portillo-esque travelogue , but one where the contestants have to find a more optimal vacation balance. It was interesting that the winners on this first Japanese leg are Eugenie and Isabel, a mother and daughter who took a pretty long detour to see the isolated, tranquil and lovely offshore island of Sado, on the “wrong” coast from the point of view of sheer speed. It’s so off the beaten track, even for the Japanese, that it was once used as a place of exile for out of favour politicians and the like.

Yet they still arrived, after five days on the road and having missed a connection, two minutes before twins Alfie and Owen, who just about managed to squeeze in a glimpse of Mount Fuji along their supposedly efficient but actually overly panicky and rushed route. It seems that Isabel’s impressive attempt to get a random Japanese boy to teach her the language on a long bus ride paid off; public signage makes little concession to the foreigner, and the universally friendly citizenry speak surprisingly little English. Our contestants don’t remark on it, but Japanese society is an evidently self-sufficient affair, something visitors always find a novelty.

Stephen and Ivy, the retired couple, aren’t that bothered about coming first, and took their opportunity to tarry at a wasabi farm, pulling up roots, burning their mouths off and cadging a useful lift. Maybe it was something about the famous sauce, but Ivy unloaded how “unintentionally offensive” her husband of many years is, just as he’s asking his hosts how old they all are: “Some have learned to tolerate him, but I love him”. Touching.

What’s also striking about Race Across the World , and something sadly impractical in the “real” world away from reality TV, is how much richer the travel experience of all those involved is because they are deprived, under the rules of the show, of their smartphones. They end up exploring their relationships with their journey partners as much as the picturesque countryside and bustling cities.

The young siblings from Yorkshire, Betty and James, for example, seem to be getting to know each other for the first time on Japanese trains and in random cafes, despite having grown up together. Something similar is also true of the two sets of mum and daughter: Eugenie and Isabel, and Sharon and Brydie. Thrown together and almost forced to talk to one another rather than scrolling through social media, their personal odyssey acquires an emotional and, around the Buddhist shrines, a spiritual dimension. As noted by young James, an unimaginative traveller by his own admission, you don’t get that with a week “having it off in Ayia Napa”. A different kind of pursuit, that.

Several of the UK's biggest supermarkets closed their gender pay gap in the last year - while Morrisons saw the biggest rise, figures show.

Ocado and Lidl reduced their gap by the largest amounts in 2023-24 compared to the previous year, while Tesco, Asda, Aldi, Co-op, Iceland and Waitrose owner John Lewis also saw a reduction.

The data comes from the government's gender pay gap service and states the difference in hourly rates of pay.

In contrast to other big-name brands, Morrisons saw its mean pay gap widen to 12.5% from 7.6%. M&S also saw a slight increase from 12.5% to 12.6%.

The mean figure gives the best overall view of the gender pay gap but includes extreme values which could skew the average.

Of the 11 biggest UK supermarkets, Co-op has the largest pay gap with 13.2%, followed by M&S and Morrisons.

An M&S spokesperson said: "We're committed to driving equal opportunities and making M&S a great place to work for women. Encouragingly our median pay gap has decreased, and women now make up more than 50% of our UK store management population, but we know there is more to do.

"We're making progress with the launch of new initiatives, talent programmes, and policies, including our flexible working offer – Worklife, a Job Share Finder, and our industry-leading family leave offer."

A spokesperson for Co-op said: "We are committed to treating our colleague member owners fairly, and this includes driving equitable outcomes for female colleagues. We've seen a significant reduction in our gender pay gap since we started to report data in 2017, and this year's data shows further progress towards closing it.

"It's important to reiterate that we don't pay people differently based on their gender at Co-op. The gender pay gap is caused by us having fewer females in leadership role, where salaries are higher.

"Our focus on improving representation remains, as we know this is one of the key drivers causing the gender pay gap. Today, 40% of our leadership population are female - this is not enough, which is why we’ve launched a series of development programmes and have a coaching and mentoring offer to support women with career progression.

"We know there’s still much to do in this space and will hold ourselves to account and continue to strive for gender equality."

Morrisons has also been contacted for comment.

Every Thursday we look at a different savings option, explain the pros and cons, and reveal the best deals on the market (see table below for that).  This week we're talking about the best notice accounts. Savings Champion founder Anna Bowes  says this...

As with the rest of the savings market, the top notice account rates have started to fall. However, there are stalwarts like the Investec 90-day notice account that are holding steady and as a result offering savers an opportunity to earn a little more, while not having to tie up their cash for too long.

A relatively unused aspect of the savings market, notice accounts offer a bit of a halfway house, with the best rates available generally paying more than the top easy access rates, but will more flexibility of access than a fixed term bond.

Just as it sounds, these savings accounts require you to give notice in order to access your money without a penalty. The usual notice period ranges from 30 to 120 days, although there are some accounts on the market that require six months or even a year's notice.

Another record month for Heathrow. Last month was the busiest ever March for the UK's biggest airport, the second record-breaking month in a row.

It was also the busiest Easter weekend as Good Friday became the busiest ever direct departure day, when 118,000 people began their journey at the airport.

It shows, despite cost of living pressures, lots of Britons were going on holiday.

More good news for Heathrow came earlier this week as planned strike action by 600 border force officers was called off to allow for negotiations in its dispute over working patterns.

Oil prices are still high, hanging around $90. A barrel of Brent crude oil, the benchmark for oil prices, costs $90.66. The last time prices were this high was in the wake of the 7 October attacks and fears of conflict spreading throughout the Middle East.

On the currency front, £1 buys $1.2538 and €1.1678.

How old is the average Briton when they buy their first home, or finish paying their mortgage, or retire?

These are some of the questions answered in a "Journeying Through Life" data dump from the Office for National Statistics.

Here are some of the key takeaways...

Home ownership - including the one life event that's happening earlier

People are buying homes later in life, perhaps unsurprisingly given how house prices have risen in the last decade or so.

In 2022, more than half of people owned their own home (either with a mortgage or outright) by the age of 36.

That's a significant increase on 2004's figures - which showed the average age for home ownership was 32.

This graph shows what proportion of people own homes at what age.

It isn't all doom and gloom on the homes front, however, with the age at which people own their home outright (ie mortgage paid off) dropping from 63 (in 2004) to 61 in 2020.

This is pretty much the only life event happening earlier, however.

Retiring later

Again, this probably won't come as a huge surprise, but people are retiring later.

The age where more than half of people were retired increased from 64 in 2011 to 66 in 2021.

There has been a bigger increase in average retirement age for women (from 61 years in 2011, to 66 years in 2021) than for men (from 65 in 2011 to 66 in 2021).

The ONS says this is because the state pension age for women was increased from 60 to 66 during this time to match men.

Gender pay gap shrinking but still present

The latest data shows that men are still, on the whole, being paid more than women - although the gender pay gap is shown to be shrinking.

For all employees, the gender pay gap was 14% in 2023 - compared with 20% in 2013.

Despite the gap shrinking, this graph shows that men's hourly wages are higher than women's at nearly all ages.

The grey shaded area represents the pay gap.

Another part of the data shows that males start work a touch earlier than women - with half of males in full-time employment by the age of 23 (compared with females at 24) in 2021.

That data could be explained by the fact that more women attend university - some 319,000 females compared with 285,000 males in 2022.

Moving out, marrying and having children

The age at which young people move out of their family homes is increasing, too.

In 2011, half of people were not living with their parents at the age of 21 - compared with 24 in 2022.

More men live with their parents than women, with 61% of adults living at home in 2021 were male.

When it comes to having children, the average age at which women have their first baby has risen to 29.

That's up from an average of just 23 in 1970.

And finally, marriage.

The median age at first marriage has been steadily increasing since the 1960s.

For opposite sex couples married in 2020, the median age was 32 years for men and 30 years for women. For those entering into same-sex marriage, the median age was older, at 36 years for men and 32 years for women.

As well as getting married older, fewer people are getting married. In 2019, marriage rates had fallen to their lowest on record. For men, there were 18.6 marriages per 1,000 never-married men; for women, there were 17.2 marriages per 1,000 never-married women.

Spotify has announced it is hiking its subscription prices by up to £24 a year.

It is the second time in less than a year that the music streaming giant has increased its prices.

Here's how the prices will change...

Individual: £11.99 a month (up from £10.99 a month)

Duo: £16.99 a month (up from £14.99 a month)

Family: £19.99 a month (up from £17.99 a month)

When will the change kick in?

The subscription price will change from May and if you are an existing customer Spotify will email you and give you one-month's notice of the change.

If you are on a free trial you will pay the old price for one month once your trial ends.

A Spotify spokesperson told Sky News: "So that we can keep innovating and delivering value to fans, the music industry, and creators on our platform, we occasionally update our prices.

"We've begun communicating with existing subscribers in the UK to explain what this means for their account."

American burger chain Wendy's will be recruiting for over 400 job roles as part of its expansion across the UK.

The chain returned to the UK in 2021 after a 20-year break and has since opened just over 30 sites, including drive-throughs in Colchester, Peterborough, Derby and Brampton Hut.

But the chain, which was founded in Columbus, Ohio, in 1969, plans to open a further nine sites this year in Liverpool, Middlesbrough, and a second location in Sheffield.

New locations will include Liverpool, Middlesbrough and a second site in Sheffield.

Wendy's franchisee GH Burgers will open a first restaurant in Wood Green, London, this year.

There will also be restaurants in Southend-on-Sea, Colchester, Cambridge and Newcastle.

Michael Clarke, UK managing director for the Wendy's Company, told The Caterer : "We've seen great momentum in building Wendy's fandom in the UK, and the love and excitement for this iconic brand grows stronger with each new restaurant opening."

Changes to visa rules costing people thousands of pounds extra "destroy the notion of the UK as a place where families can thrive", campaigners have said.

The minimum income for family visas rises by more than £10,000 to £29,000 today.

It will rise further to £38,700 early next year.

Reunite Families UK claimed the values of family and love are being treated as "as yet another political football to be sacrificed in order to receive better poll or electoral results".

The government says the plans offer "an accelerated and comprehensive programme of reforms" to address "unsustainable" levels of legal migration to the UK.

Justifying its plans, the Home Office said the minimum amount had remained unchanged for more than a decade, and the new measures will help ensure families are self-sufficient and not relying on public funds.

'We just want to be with our families'

Argentinian Eugenia Morales said the uncertainty around her and her baby daughter being able to reunite with her husband in the UK had taken a toll.

The 30-year-old has been with her partner Connor White for three years but is unsure whether - after having their daughter in Argentina - she will be able to join him in England.

She said Mr White, who is based in West Sussex, cannot leave his eldest child from a previous relationship and has been working weekends in his construction job to try to boost his income to the required amount to sponsor his wife.

Ms Morales said she would be looking for a job in the UK and would not have access to benefits while applying on the family visa route anyway.

She told the PA news agency: "We don't want to be a burden to the [welfare] system, we just want to be with our families.

"It's an awful situation. We want to be together, we want the girls to grow up together but this is making it totally impossible."

Caroline Coombs, co-founder of Reunite Families UK, said people are feeling "punished" and "excluded" by the new rules.

Ms Coombs said: "This increase, together with the ones which will come into force in the next 12 months, destroy the notion of the UK as a place where families can thrive."

Athletics will become the first sport to introduce prize money at the Olympics this summer.

World Athletics, the international athletics federation, says it will pay Olympic gold medal winners $50,000 at the Paris games.

The athletics governing body said it is setting aside $2.4m (£1.89m) to pay the gold medallists across 48 events at Paris' track and field programme.

The tweet below on the price of olive oil has gone viral - so we thought it was a good opportunity to resurface our feature from March that explains what's going on.

At the time, our  spending calculator  revealed the average price of a 500ml bottle of olive oil had risen from £3.54 in January 2021 to £7.45 now - an eyebrow-raising jump of 110.5%.

We spoke to experts about why - and here's what we learned...

Groves becomes graveyards

We start in Italy, where, according to a  survey by the polling firm Istituto Piepoli , 45% of consumers have rediscovered seed oil in the kitchen, and the industry is facing an existential crisis.

Mike Carlucci, managing director of the Italian food importer  Tenuta Marmorelle , says production in parts of Italy is becoming impossible due to a natural disaster that has nothing to do with the climate.

"The events of the past 10 years have made olive oil production in Puglia [which produces 40% of Italy's olive oil] almost impossible," he said. "This is due to the rising bacteria disease Xylella Fastidiosa."

The disease attacks and kills century-old olive trees, severely diminishing yields.

It spreads about 20km to 25km a year, Mike says, leaving a "graveyard of withered and barren trees which were once stunning beautiful olive groves".

Many producers have been forced to replace their trees with more resilient varieties but...

"Even if the new trees manage not to succumb to Xylella, it will be at least nine to 12 years before they produce a notable amount of oil," says Mike.

While prices are up across the continent, in the UK another factor is in play: Brexit.

"The cost of customs documentation leaving Europe and entering the UK is approximately £95 per shipment," says Mike.

"Transporters have all imposed a Brexit surcharge for extra admin duties performed by them in the importation of goods from Europe."

Pallets coming into the UK from the continent are now subject to more stringent fire resistance rules - meaning the cost of pallets has "tripled, even in some cases quadrupled".

'Never had a shortage like it'

Another issue, as has been widely reported, are the wildfires and droughts in southern Europe last year.

These weather events have lead people to extreme measures, according to Sarah Vachon, olive oil sommelier and founder of  citizensofsoil.com .

"You can ask the elders in the villages in Greece and they've never had a shortage like this," she says.

"I see lots of producers selling their previous harvest's oils, since they're able to get a high price for it and might have held on to it over the year.

"This means the consumer is not getting fresh EVOO. And when it's not fresh, it not only loses its flavour, but it also loses a lot of the health benefits (namely antioxidants like polyphenols) which drop significantly over time."

On top of climate change, there's a flood of cheap sunflower oil coming from Ukraine - so while the price of olive oil is going up, the cost of alternatives are going down.

200 trees stolen overnight

The result is an industry in crisis - and organised criminals are taking advantage.

"Around half of the farmers I work with have a story to tell about thieves stealing their liquid gold," says Sarah.

"Sometimes it's the oil itself, or the olive fruit at the groves, or even an insane story from one of our producers about thieves coming in the night and uprooting 200 freshly planted trees."

Maria Dawson, managing director of the organic food seller Clearspring, says the industry is seeing "some of the lowest levels of olive oil production for five decades and unfortunately a shortage of supply".

The company has managed to secure a stable supply for the coming year, but Maria expects the market to remain uncertain - with no price reductions in the near future, even if 2025 brings better harvests.

Olive oil sommelier Sarah isn't hopeful, either.

"Olive oil is already facing record prices, and the way the climate is changing across the Mediterranean basin (which is warming 20% faster than the rest of the world), the shortages we've seen will likely continue."

Euan Blair's apprenticeship company Multiverse will use AI to pick prospective job applicants.

The son of the former prime minister Sir Tony Blair has bought talent intelligence platform Searchlight, whose artificial intelligence technology claims to identify candidates for job vacancies four times more effectively than traditional methods, for his firm.

It does this by removing the biases and assumptions that may affect decisions by managers and then shortlisting candidates.

According to Searchlight's website it reduces "unconscious bias" with "impartial AI algorithms designed to catch what the human eye may miss".

It also provides "rigorous analysis" of work experience and hard and soft skills.

Mr Blair said what often held companies back was "the gap between the transformation they want to see, and the skills that will unlock it".

"Searchlight's AI, platform, and exceptional talent will allow us to better diagnose the skills needed within companies and deliver impactful solutions," he said.

Multiverse was founded by Mr Blair in 2016 and has since grown across the UK and US.

It works with more than 1,500 companies, including Microsoft, Citi and Just Eat, and has trained more than 16,000 apprentices.
