If you are awaiting a decision on an application for a UK visa, tracking the progress of your application can be crucial to planning ahead, especially where you are time-pressured for a decision.

The following guide looks at how UK visa applicants can check the status of their applications, whether you have applied to extend an existing visa or switch to a new category of visa from within the UK, or you are applying for entry clearance or leave to enter the UK from another country.

We also share general guidance on the standard and premium visa processing times.

Checking your UK visa application status – in-country applications

Most applications to extend leave to remain in the UK, including applications to switch to another visa category, as well as applications for settlement and citizenship , are now made through the UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services ( UKVCAS ).

UKVCAS was launched by the UK Home Office to speed up the processing of in-country further leave to remain applications. Applicants are required to attend a single appointment to have their identity confirmed, enrol any biometric information (fingerprints and photograph) that may be required and submit their documentation in support.

However, applicants will not be given a decision at their UKVCAS appointment. The visa application and supporting documents will be sent to UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) to be processed. UKVI is a division of the Home Office responsible for the UK’s visa system, who will allocate to a specific case worker for a decision to be made.

UKVCAS cannot answer queries about the status of an application. You would instead need to contact UKVI.

If you have already submitted a UK visa application and are now waiting to hear the outcome, visit the GOV.UK website to find information and updates from UKVI on visa processing in general.

You cannot currently track your individual visa application online – either through UKVCAS or UKVI – but you can use an online tool to obtain information on which department to contact for your particular application.

You will need to answer a couple of questions about your application when using this tool, such as the case reference number assigned when you submitted the application, and you should be provided contact information for different departments at UKVI.

You can call the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) contact centre by telephone on 0300 790 6268 – select option 2 – Monday to Thursday (excluding bank holidays), 9am to 4:45pm and Friday (excluding bank holidays), 9am to 4:30pm.

If you have any questions about British citizenship applications, you will need to contact the Citizenship and Nationality Enquiries team by email  [email protected],  or by phone: 0300 790 6268 – select option 2 – Monday to Thursday, 9am to 4:45pm and Friday, 9am to 4:30pm.

How to check UK visa application status – out of country applications

When applying for a visa from outside the UK, you will need to attend a visa application centre in the country from which you are applying to provide your biometric information, together with all necessary documents in support of your application.

As with in-country visa applications, you will not receive a decision on your application at your appointment to enrol your biometric information and provide your supporting documentation. You will instead be required to wait for a decision from UKVI.

UKVI website

You can check the status of your out-of-country application using the UKVI website. This ‘General Enquiry’ service incurs a charge of £2.74 per application, which covers the initial email enquiry as well as follow-up emails relating to the same enquiry.

You will need a credit or debit card to use this service, where you will be asked to enter your payment details before sending your email, but you will not be charged until your message has been sent. UKVI will usually reply within 2 days, except on Saturdays, Sundays and UK public holidays.

TLScontact website

On the TLScontact website, click ‘Provide Documents and Biometrics’ and then ‘Continue’ to be redirected to your account. Choose the option to ‘Track’ which will display the real-time status of your application.

VFS website

On the VFS Global website, choose the location of the visa application centre where you provided your biometrics, then select ‘Track your application’. IF you do not ave the option to track your application, you should try the UKVI website.

By telephone

You can call UKVI with a question about your application on +44 (0)300 790 6268 – select option 1, or +44 (0)203 875 4669. This service is open Monday to Friday, 24 hours, at a cost of 69p per minute on top of your standard network charges.

Please note, if your message is urgent, you can phone the contact centre instead, although the contact centre staff will not have any involvement in the outcome of your case.

What are the standard processing times for UK visa applications?

The time in which it will take to process your UK visa application will primarily depend on whether you have applied to either come to or remain in the UK. The category of visa that you are applying for may also affect your application wait times.

Generally speaking, the wait times for visa applications made from outside the UK are typically shorter than for in-country applications.

If you are applying to remain in the UK, you should still be allowed to stay in the UK pending any decision from UKVI, so long as you have submitted your application to extend your leave to remain or switch to another category before your existing visa expires.

UKVI publishes standard processing times for applications on its website in accordance with their customer charter.

It is important to remember that the guide times provided are not a guarantee.

Applications made in the UK

Based on the current processing times, for those applying to remain in the UK on a temporary basis, including as workers and students, the standard processing time is 8 weeks. Applications for indefinite leave to remain made from inside the UK will usually be dealt with within 6 months.

Applications made outside the UK

For those applying for a visa from outside the UK, the target is for 90% of non-settlement applications to be processed within 3 weeks, 98% within 6 weeks and 100% within 12 weeks of the application date, where 1 week is 5 working days.

Currently, student and Skilled Worker applications are taking 3 weeks to process out of country, while family visas are taking 24 weeks.

For those applying for settlement from outside the UK, it is estimated that 98.5% of settlement applications will be dealt with within 12 weeks of the application date, and 100% within 24 weeks of the application date, where again 1 week is 5 working days.

How does premium processing work?

If you are looking to obtain a faster decision on your visa application, in many cases it is possible to pay for premium processing, or what’s known as a priority service, when you submit your application. You will need to check your application type for available priority services. If you are applying outside the UK, you will also need to check with the visa application centre where you intend to make your application.

There may be two premium processing options available to you: the ‘5 working day priority service’ and the ‘next working day super priority service’. The timescales for priority services will run from when you complete your appointment to provide your biometric information and supporting evidence, although these times do not include the time taken to issue you with your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP). You will usually receive your BRP within 7 working days after a decision has been made on your application.

For super priority service appointments attended on a Saturday or Sunday, the appointment will be deemed as attended on the next working day. Where there is a bank holiday the next working day will be classed as a Tuesday, but in most cases this will be a Monday. This means, for example, a Saturday appointment will usually be deemed as attended on the Monday after the weekend, and the decision on your visa application completed and dispatched by the end of the next working day.

What can delay a UK visa application?

If your visa application is straightforward, for example, where a decision can be made on it without you being asked for more information, it will usually be decided within the standard processing times or, where you have paid for a faster decision, the premium processing times.

If, however, your application is more complex, the usual times may not necessarily apply and you may need to wait longer for a decision. If your application is delayed, you will be informed by letter as to what will happen next within the relevant timescales for your visa.

If you applied for a priority or super priority visa and it is not possible to meet the applicable timescale, your application will still be put at the front of the queue at every stage of the decision-making process. UKVI will also still aim to process your application within standard global timescales. In these circumstances, you may be able to request a refund of the additional fee paid for premium processing.

Your application could be delayed for a number of reasons. This could be due to backlogs in processing applications by UKVI, both generally and, more recently, because of the coronavirus pandemic. This could also be because your supporting documents need to be verified and/or you are required to attend an interview, or because of your personal circumstances, such as any adverse immigration history or criminal convictions.

Your visa application will be assessed both in accordance with the general requirements under the UK immigration rules, as well as the specific eligibility criteria required for your visa category. If there is insufficient evidence in support of your application, or a question mark over whether you qualify for a particular visa or satisfy the general requirements to come to or remain in the UK, further investigations may be warranted.

If you have been asked to provide additional documentation in support of your UK visa application, or have concerns about attending an interview, expert advice should be sought from an immigration specialist to guide you through this process.

Checking your UK visa application status FAQs

How can i check the status of my uk visa application.

There are different ways of checking different types of applications. For example, if you have made a visa extension application from within the UK, there is no online checking service available so you would instead need to call UKVI.

How do I check my VFS application status?

If you have applied overseas for a UK visa and attended an appointment at a visa application centre, you can go to the GOV.UK online tool to track your VFS application status. VFS are the commercial partners used by UKVI to help deliver their overseas visa services. You will be given the option of contacting UKVI by either telephone or email, although email enquiries are more likely to be directed to the caseworker dealing with your application.

How can I check my UK visa status with passport number?

When you first submitted your application for a UK visa, you will have been asked to provide your passport. Once your application has been successfully submitted, you should then have been given a case reference number. You will need to have this number to hand when you phone or email UKVI to check your UK visa status and the progress of your application.

The Child Visitor Visa allows children below 18 to enter the UK for holidays, tourism, medical treatment, excursions, or to visit friends and family. The requirements for this visa vary depending on if the child is travelling with or without an adult.

Children travelling alone must provide written consent from their parent or guardian authorising them to travel to the UK. They’ll also need to provide proof that they have suitable accommodation throughout their stay, including:

  • The name and date of birth of their host
  • The address where they will live
  • The details of their relationship with the host
  • A written consent from the host stating that the child will live with them while in the UK.

If the host is not a close relative and the child is under 16, the child’s parent or guardian must inform the relevant local authority about the visit.

A written consent is also needed if the child is travelling with an adult. However, they must identify the adult in their visa application, who must also apply for a visa.

The Marriage Visitor Visa allows you to enter the UK to get married or register a civil partnership. You can also apply for this Visa to give notice of your marriage or civil partnership in the UK.

It’s important to note that you can’t remain in the UK after your wedding and must leave within 6 months. However, if you intend to stay in the UK after your marriage, you should apply for a Fiance Visa, which will allow you to switch to a Partner Visa .

When applying for the Standard Visitor Visa, there are certain documents you must submit to demonstrate your eligibility and reason for your trip. These documents differ depending on the specific visit visa you’re applying for.

Here are the documents you’ll need:

  • The online visa application form
  • A passport valid throughout your stay
  • Two passport-size photographs
  • A cover letter explaining the purpose of your trip
  • A detailed travel itinerary
  • Proof of sufficient funds to support yourself throughout your stay
  • A letter of sponsorship, if applicable
  • Round-trip flight tickets
  • Proof of accommodation
  • Details of any criminal, civil or immigration offences you may have committed

To apply for the Standard Visitor Visa, you must begin the process online. The earliest you can apply is 3 months before your intended travel date.

First, visit the UK government website and create an account. Afterwards, fill out the visa application form with details such as the dates you plan to travel, where you’ll be staying, and how much you think your trip will cost.

After completing the form, you should pay the visa application fee and upload any supporting documents required. If you’re travelling with family members, each person must complete an online application and pay the visa fees.

As part of the online application, you must book an appointment at a UK visa application centre in Pakistan. You should visit the VAC on the scheduled day to provide your biometrics, answer questions regarding your trip, and submit your documents.

The consular officer will take some time to go through your application. If successful, you will be notified via email.

It's crucial to carefully follow the appeal process and provide compelling reasons why your application should be reconsidered.

5. Seek professional assistance: If you're unsure about the best course of action or need guidance during the appeal process, it's advisable to seek professional assistance from OUR immigration lawyer or consultant. UK Visit Visa from Pakistan Requirements in 2024

What are the types of uk visit visas.

When planning a visit to the UK from Pakistan, understanding the different categories of visas is crucial for a successful application. Here are some common types of UK visit visas:

  • Standard Visitor Visa : This is the most commonly applied for visa and is suitable for a range of purposes such as tourism, visiting friends and family, or attending short business meetings. The validity is generally up to 6 months but can be extended under special circumstances.
  • Marriage Visitor Visa : This visa type is tailored for individuals who plan to get married or enter into a civil partnership in the UK but do not intend to settle there afterward. Note that you cannot switch to another visa category while on a Marriage Visitor Visa.
  • Permitted Paid Engagement Visa : This visa allows professionals, such as academics, artists, or sportspeople, to visit the UK for up to one month to undertake specific paid activities, such as giving guest lectures or participating in arts events.
  • Transit Visa : For travelers who have a layover in the UK before proceeding to another country, a Transit Visa is necessary. Two types are available: Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV) and Visitor in Transit Visa.

General Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for a UK Visit Visa from Pakistan, you will need to satisfy the following criteria:

  • Purpose of Visit : You must clearly outline the reasons for your trip to the UK. This could range from tourism, family visits, or business engagements. The purpose should align with the type of visa for which you are applying.
  • Financial Stability : You must provide evidence of having enough funds to cover your expenses during your stay in the UK. This means accommodation, daily expenses, and any potential emergency costs.
  • Accommodation Plans : Proof of where you will be staying throughout your visit is required. This could be a hotel booking confirmation or an invitation letter from a UK resident who will be hosting you.
  • Intention to Return : You’ll need to prove your intent to return to Pakistan once your visa expires. This can often be demonstrated through ties to your home country, such as employment or property ownership.

Required Documents

While the requirements may vary slightly depending on the specific visa you are applying for, these are the general documents needed:

Ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months from your intended date of arrival in the UK.

Application Form

You’ll need to complete the application form online through the official UK government website.

Biometric Information

As part of the application process, you’ll need to attend a biometrics appointment where your fingerprints and photograph will be taken.

Invitation Letter

If you’re visiting family or friends or attending a business meeting, an invitation letter from the host is often required.

Financial Documents

Recent bank statements (typically from the last six months) will need to be presented to confirm your financial stability.

Employment Verification

If you’re employed, an employment verification letter may be required to show ties to Pakistan.

Tax Records

Some applicants may need to provide tax records as additional evidence of financial stability.

Travel Plans

Though not advisable to make any non-refundable bookings, you’ll need to provide a general outline of your travel plans.

Additional Documents

Depending on your circumstances, other documentation like marriage certificates, academic qualifications, or business registration documents might be needed.

Application Fee

As of the year 2024, the application fee for a Standard Visitor Visa is £115.

This fee is non-refundable, even if the visa application is denied, so make sure all your documents are in order before submitting the application.

Application Process

  • Online Application : The UK Visa application process begins online. You’ll need to complete the application form, pay the visa fee, and schedule an appointment at a visa application center.
  • Document Submission : Gather all required documents and submit them at your scheduled appointment. At this time, you will also provide your biometric data.
  • Interview : Some applicants might be required to attend an interview. You’ll be notified if this applies to you.
  • Decision : After your documents and biometric information have been processed, you’ll receive a decision, typically within 15 working days. In some cases, especially during peak times or if additional documentation is required, processing could take longer.
  • Visa Stamping : If approved, your passport will be stamped with the visa, allowing you to travel to the UK for the duration stipulated.

What Are The Special Considerations for Pakistani Nationals?

  • Additional Screening : Pakistani nationals may be subject to additional security checks, which could prolong the application process.
  • Travel History : A stable travel history can be beneficial in the application process but is not a mandatory requirement.
  • Health Insurance : It’s advisable to have comprehensive health insurance as the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) coverage does not automatically extend to visitors.
  • Credibility Interviews : Be prepared for a credibility interview where you’ll be asked about your plans in the UK, your background, and other pertinent information.

How To Extend Your Stay

If you find that you wish to extend your stay in the UK, it’s crucial to start the extension process well before your current visa expires. Here’s how:

  • Eligibility : Check that you meet the extension criteria, including proof of ongoing purpose in the UK and sufficient funds to sustain your extended stay.
  • Application : Submit an online application form and pay the required fee, which will differ based on the type of visa you initially had.
  • Documentation : Gather all required documents, which are generally similar to those needed for the initial visa application.
  • Biometric Information : Update your biometric information at a local center if required.

Please note that you should not assume the extension will be granted and should have contingency plans in place.

What Happens If My Visa Is Refused?

If your UK Visit Visa is refused, the notice will usually indicate whether an appeal is possible and the deadline for doing so.

  • Grounds for Appeal : These could include proving that a mistake was made in the evaluation of your application or that required documents were not considered.
  • Legal Advice : Consider seeking advice from an immigration lawyer who specializes in UK visa appeals.
  • Filing an Appeal : Follow the procedure outlined in your refusal notice, which may include submitting an appeal form and additional documentation.
  • Alternative Routes : If an appeal is not possible or fails, you might be able to apply for a different type of visa or reapply by addressing the reasons for refusal.

Can I Apply For My Visa As A Family?

Applying for a UK Visit Visa as a family entails additional layers of documentation and requirements:

  • Group Applications : While there’s no group application per se, family members must submit their own individual applications.
  • Linking Applications : During the online application process, you can link family members’ applications to indicate that you’re traveling as a family.
  • Minors : Applications for minors must be completed by a parent or guardian and must include additional documents like a letter of consent from both parents and copies of their passports.
  • Dependents : If traveling with dependents, you’ll need to provide additional documentation demonstrating your relationship and your ability to support them during the stay.

6 Visa Application Mistakes to Avoid

Securing a UK Visit Visa involves strict adherence to procedures and requirements. A small oversight can result in delays or even a denial. Here are some mistakes to avoid:

  • Incomplete Documentation : Make sure you’ve gathered all required documents before applying. Missing even one could result in an incomplete application.
  • Incorrect Information : Double-check all the information on your application forms. Incorrect data can be grounds for visa denial.
  • Insufficient Funds Proof : Failing to adequately prove you have sufficient funds to sustain your trip could be a major setback.
  • Lack of Travel History : While not a strict requirement, having a lack of travel history and failing to justify it can raise questions about your intentions.
  • Overstaying Previous Visas : If you have a history of overstaying your visas in any country, it can affect the decision on your current application.
  • Not Preparing for the Interview : If an interview is required, failing to prepare adequately can result in an unfavorable outcome.

Can I Work in the UK on a Standard Visit Visa?

UK introduces eVisa in major push for immigration digitalization

LONDON - The UK government is fast switching to digitalization as people in the country with physical immigration documents are being invited to switch to eVisa.

As per the Home Office, the Government aims for a fully digital immigration and border system by 2025 and physical documents will be gradually phased out.

Tom Pursglove, the minister for legal migration and the border, said replacing physical documents with a digital system will ensure firm control over who comes here to live, work or study.

'Invitations will be issued in phases before the process opens to all BRP holders in summer 2024,' read a statement issued by the Home Office on Wednesday.

It has been clarified that it is free and straightforward for those who hold physical and paper documents to create a UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) account to access their eVisa.

'Creating a UKVI account will not change, impact or remove customers’ current immigration status or their rights in the UK,' clarified the Home Office.

The Home Office has stated that eVisa brings substantial benefits to the UK public and to visa customers as they are secure, and cannot be lost, stolen, or tampered with.

An eVisa is securely linked with the holder’s unique biometric information and millions of customers are already using them across routes including the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS).

'Most physical documents, such as biometric residence permits or cards (BRPs or BRCs), are being gradually phased out, with most BRPs expiring at the end of 2024,' stated the Home Office and added that customers who already have an eVisa do not need to do anything but should continue to update their UKVI account with any changes to personal information, such as a new passport or contact details.

'Customers should continue to carry their in-date physical immigration documents with them when they travel internationally until they expire,' read a statement by the Home Office.

'Customers who already have an eVisa should tell the Home Office about any passport on which they intend to travel using the online Update your UK Visas and Immigration account details service on GOV.UK, if this is not already linked to their account, to avoid delays when travelling,' it added.

Middle East latest: Israel 'considered revenge attack on Monday' – as ex-Mossad intelligence chief says striking Iran's nuclear facilities 'on the table'

A former Israeli spy agency official says targeting nuclear facilities in Iran is "on the table" - as a report suggests Israel considered, but decided against striking Iran on Monday. Meanwhile, Iran's president warns the "tiniest move" against the country would bring a "fierce" response.

The funeral for Hezbollah commander Ismail Yusaf Baz has been held in Chehabiyeh, Lebanon.

The head of the militant group's coastal sector was "eliminated" in a strike in the Ain Ebel area yesterday, the Israel Defence Forces said.

As we reported in our 8.39pm post, Hezbollah responded today by launching missiles and drones at a military facility in northern Israel - injuring some 14 IDF troops.

Iran is currently holding its National Army Day parade ceremony in Tehran.

Drones and missiles were paraded as soldiers marched alongside them, some carrying the Iranian flag.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and other top military officials are also in attendance.

The annual event was established by the founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran in 1979.

An update on our 12.40pm post - in which we reported that strikes from Lebanon had injured people in northern Israel.

The Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group has since claimed responsibility, saying it launched missiles and drones at a military facility in northern Israel in retaliation for Israeli strikes that killed Hezbollah members yesterday.

At least 14 Israeli soldiers were injured in today's attack, with six in serious condition, according to the Israel Defence Forces.

The Israeli Ynet news site said the soldiers were in a community centre in the village.

The IDF in retaliation said it "struck the sources of fire" after identifying several anti-tank missile and drone launches from Lebanon towards the Bedouin village of Arab al Aramshe.

For context: Iran-backed, Lebanon-based Hezbollah, which means "Party of God" in Arabic, openly calls for the destruction of the "Zionist regime in Palestine" and is deemed a terror organisation by most Western powers.

The militia has long aligned itself with Hamas and Islamic Jihad and has frequently clashed with IDF forces on the Israel-Lebanon border since the most recent conflict broke out on 7 October.

But the violence has largely been contained to areas at the border, shaped by what observers have called unwritten rules of engagement between adversaries that have long threatened each other with catastrophic damage in the event of war.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has previously warned that Beirut would be turned "into Gaza" if Hezbollah started an all-out war.

By Ben van der Merwe and Saywah Mahmood, Data and Forensics Unit

Iran's president has vowed Israel would face a "massive and harsh response" if it attacks, as US officials believe it is planning to do.

Iran launched more than 330 missiles and drones towards Israel on Saturday in response to Israel's alleged bombing of its Syrian consulate.

On Wednesday, Foreign Secretary Lord David Cameron said he hoped that Israel's potential retaliation "does as little as possible to escalate this conflict".

Experts told Sky News that Israel is likely to be considering an airstrike on critical Iranian infrastructure, including air bases and nuclear facilities.

Israel is well-equipped for such an operation. The country possesses 39 state-of-the-art F-35 stealth fighter jets, the fifth largest inventory in the world.

Sky News security and defence analyst Michael Clarke says the planes are "pretty well invisible".

"It is rumoured that Israeli F-35s have already been around and about Iranian airspace on surveillance missions," he says.

The chancellor has said that the G7 will be "united" in its response to Tehran, amid reports that the West is weighing up major sanctions on Iran.

"When Iran attacked Israel, Western support was rock solid," Jeremy Hunt told our economics and data editor Ed Conway .

"If Iran takes action that destabilises the global economy through what it does in the Middle East, then they will face concerted response from Western countries," he warned.

"I think G7 countries will be united in our response to what Iran has done and anything Iran may plan to do."

Earlier, Israel's ambassador to the UK urged the West to hit Tehran financially so its grasp on the region via its proxies might slip.

"This is the time to be hard on Iran [and] there are a number of diplomatic ways to do that." Tzipi Hotovely said (see 7.00pm post).

Israel considered a near-immediate response to Saturday's attack by Iran, but decided against it, according to a report.

Israel considered conducting retaliatory action on Monday night, before eventually postponing it, five Israeli and US sources told Axios .

The report is unverified.

The Israeli officials reportedly told the outlet that the war cabinet changed its mind on military action "for operational reasons", while American sources said the US was not sure of the scale of Israel's planned response, but thought it was likely it would provoke Iran into escalation.

The officials reportedly said IDF chief of staff General Hertzi Halevi and the the cabinet's other former generals — defence minister Yoav Gallant and ministers Benny Gantz and Gadi Eizenkot were pushing  hardest for a military for a response, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the leader of the ultra-orthodox Shas party, Aryeh Deri, were said to be "more cautious".

Qatar is re-assessing its role as mediator between Israel and Hamas, the country's prime minister has said.

Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani said its role was being misused by some politicians for their own goals.

"Qatar is in the process of a complete re-evaluation of its role because there has been damage to Qatar," he said, without providing any further detail.

The Gulf state has been a key figure in discussions between the two warring sides, alongside voices from Egypt and the US.

The country is home to some senior Hamas officials, including Ismail Haniyeh.

The time has come for the West to sanction Iran, Israel's ambassador to the UK has said.

After Iran "tried to kill thousands of Israelis" with its drone and missile assault at the weekend, Tzipi Hotovely told Sky's lead world news presenter Yalda Hakim in Jerusalem that a "watershed moment for the Middle East" had arrived.

"I live in London, could you imagine [if an Iranian attack hit there]?" she said.

Watch a clip from her interview here...

She described Iran as "an octopus", which was spreading itself across the Middle East via its proxies.

"It's so clear that Israel needs to show an act of deterrence," she said.

"I think [what comes] next is sanctions," she added.

"This is the time to be hard on Iran [and] there are a number of diplomatic ways to do that."

It has been suggested that hitting Iran financially could help drain some of its proxy groups of their power base.

Iran has backed, funded, and trained several groups across the Middle East region, including Hamas in Gaza, the Houthis in Yemen, Hezbollah in Lebanon and a number of other factions based in Syria and Iraq.

On how Israel could respond militarily, Ms Hotovely said "it's for the war cabinet to decide".

Ms Hotovely previously made headlines back in December when she told Sky News that Israel would not recognise a two-state solution.

Israel has blocked crucial items of aid on insufficient security grounds, the head of a charity trying to get equipment into Gaza has said.

Melanie Ward, CEO of Medical Aid for Palestinians, told Sky News that Israel had rejected blankets based on the fact that they were green, among other refusals.

"I saw for myself a number of the items that have been rejected by the Israeli military supposedly on security grounds, that included a large box of crutches... an anaesthetic machine, I saw an X-ray machine rejected," she said.

"I saw first aid kits, bleach, a wheelchair, all these kinds of items.

"There's no excuse for rejecting these.

"This is the kind of situation that we are trying to deliver aid in."

Turning to the UNRWA - the UN's Palestinian Agency, Ms Ward urged the UK to resume its funding.

Major countries, including the US and UK, halted funding the agency after Israeli accusations that some of its staff took part in the 7 October attack by Hamas militants.

Israel released a dossier that it claimed supported the claims, but Sky News' and other news outlets who viewed the document said it did not provide evidence for the allegations.

Australia, Sweden, the European Commission, Finland, France and Canada have all resumed funding for UNRWA, and Ms Ward said the UK should follow.

"UNRWA is desperately needed... without it tens of thousands more Palestinians in Gaza will needlessly die," she said.

This sentiment has been echoed by major humanitarian agencies, including CARE International, which said the UK "is withholding funding to enable one of the most vital lifelines to ensure food, water and medical supplies can reach civilians across Gaza".

"Famine is already present in Gaza and with each day of delay conditions for vulnerable groups, including women and girls deteriorate further," CARE's UK head of advocacy and policy, Dorothy Sang, said.

"It is deeply concerning that the UK government is choosing delay over getting aid to those in dire need."

It follows a similar call earlier today from shadow foreign secretary David Lammy (see 13.10 post), who said: "It's shocking in the face of famine that the UK is one of the last major donors that has not yet resumed funding, without explanation."

It's 6pm here in London - 7pm in Gaza and Israel and 8pm in Tehran, so let's re-cap the day's events.

Much of the day's focus has been on how Israel could respond to Iran's missile and drone barrage at the weekend:

  • The former director of intelligence at the Israeli spy agency, Mossad, said targeting nuclear facilities in Iran was among the options on the table as Israel decides how to respond to Saturday's attack;
  • Lord Cameron said during a visit to Israel it was "clear" that Benjamin Netanyahu's government will respond.
  • Meanwhile, Iran's president warned the "tiniest move" against the country would bring a "fierce" response, according to state media;
  • On aid for Gaza, the UN said Israel denied "more than 40%" of its aid delivery requests to northern parts of the enclave last week;
  • It emerged that a single Israeli shell destroyed more than 4,000 embryos when it struck Gaza's largest fertility clinic in December.
