Whatever Happened To The Cast Of Star Trek: Voyager?

The third "Star Trek" series to air in the 1990s, "Star Trek: Voyager" was also the flagship series for the all-new Paramount television network UPN. Making its debut in January of 1995, the series saw Captain Kathryn Janeway command the state-of-the-art starship Voyager on a mission to pursue a group of Maquis rebels. However, when a phenomenon envelops them both and hurls them to the distant Delta Quadrant, Starfleet officers and Maquis terrorists become one crew on a perilous journey home.

Despite a few cast shake-ups, "Voyager" ran for seven seasons and featured a consistently stellar ensemble. The series helped launch the careers of several of its lesser-known actors, while others can count the series as the highest point in their filmography. Some walked away from Hollywood after it concluded, while a few have since made big comebacks, returning to the roles that made them famous.

Since it ended in 2001, "Voyager" has aged like fine wine, earning new fans thanks to the magic of streaming where new generations can discover it anew. Whether seeing it for the first time — or even if you're watching it for the umpteenth — you may be wondering where the cast is now. Well, recalibrate the bio-neural gel packs and prep the Delta Flyer for launch because we're here to fill you in on what's happened to the cast of "Star Trek: Voyager."

Kate Mulgrew as Captain Kathryn Janeway

It's no secret that Kate Mulgrew wasn't the first choice to play Captain Janeway in "Star Trek: Voyager." Academy Award-nominee Geneviève Bujold was famously cast first  but filmed only a few scenes before quitting the show during the production of the series pilot, leading to Mulgrew being brought in. Today it is difficult to imagine anyone else in the role, though it's hardly Mulgrew's only iconic TV series.

Following the show's conclusion in 2001, Mulgrew took a few years off from acting, returning with a small role in the 2005 film "Perception" with Piper Perabo. After a guest appearance on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," Mulgrew snagged a recurring role on "The Black Donnellys" in 2007 alongside Jonathan Tucker and Olivia Wilde and another in the short-lived NBC medical drama "Mercy" in 2009. Her return to a main cast, however, came in the Adult Swim series "NTSF:SD:SUV::," where she played an eye patch-wearing leader of an anti-terrorism task force alongside future "Star Trek" star Rebecca Romijn .

Of course, Mulgrew found a major career resurgence in 2013, starring in one of Netflix's earliest forays into original programming, "Orange is the New Black." In the series she stars as Red, an inmate at a women's prison, a role that would earn her an Emmy nomination. Mulgrew returned to "Star Trek" in 2021, voicing both Kathryn Janeway and a holographic version of the character in the Nickelodeon-produced CGI-animated series  "Star Trek: Prodigy."

Robert Beltran as Commander Chakotay

Sitting in the chair next to Captain Janeway for seven seasons was Robert Beltran as Commander Chakotay, a former Maquis first officer. Though Beltran counts his heritage as Latino, Chakotay was actually the first Native American series regular in the franchise but was sadly under-used, a fact that the actor has  commented on . Following "Star Trek: Voyager," Beltran's work on the small screen was mostly limited to guest appearances, popping up in episodes of "CSI: Miami" and "Medium" in the 2000s while filling roles in movies like "Taking Chances," "Fire Serpent," and "Manticore." 

Beltran's first recurring part on TV after "Voyager" was in the series "Big Love," starring Bill Paxton and Jeanne Tripplehorn. In the series, he played Jerry Flute — another Native American — who has plans to construct a casino on a reservation. However, over the next decade, Beltran seemed to move away from acting, with a sparse handful of minor roles. He revealed on Twitter that he turned down a chance to play Chakotay one more time in the revival series "Star Trek: Picard," as he was unhappy with the part they'd written for him. 

Nevertheless, Beltran did come back to join Kate Mulgrew for the animated children's series "Star Trek: Prodigy." Voicing Chakotay in his triumphant return to the franchise, the series sees the character lost in space and his former captain on a mission to find him.

Tim Russ as Lt. Tuvok

Actor Tim Russ had already made a few guest appearances in "Star Trek: The Next Generation," "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and even the film "Star Trek Generations" before joining the main cast of "Star Trek: Voyager" in 1995. Russ became a fan-favorite as Vulcan Lt. Tuvok, who was later promoted to Lt. Commander. However, after seven seasons playing the stoic, emotionless Tuvok, Russ kept busy with a variety of different roles, mostly guest-starring in popular TV hits.

This includes guest spots in everything from "ER" and "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" to episodes of "Hannah Montana" and "Without a Trace." He even appeared on the big screen with a small role in "Live Free or Die Hard" in 2007, but it didn't keep him away from TV, as he also had a multi-episode appearance on the hit soap "General Hospital." That same year, Russ joined the main cast of the Christina Applegate comedy "Samantha Who?" and later began working in video games, providing voice work for "Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus" and "The Last of Us Part 2." 

Since then, the actor has kept busy with countless roles in such as "Criminal Minds," "NCIS: New Orleans," "Supergirl," and "The Good Doctor." More recently, Russ turned up in an episode of Seth MacFarlane's "Star Trek" homage "The Orville,"  and in 2023 voiced Lucius Fox in the animated film "Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham."

Roxann Dawson as B'Elanna Torres

On "Star Trek: Voyager," the role of chief engineer was filled by Roxann Dawson who played half-Klingon/half-human B'Elanna Torres. Starting out as a Maquis rebel, she eventually becomes one of the most important members of the crew, as well as a wife and mother. Following her run on the series, Dawson had just a handful of on-screen roles, which included single episodes of "The Closer" and "Without a Trace." That's because, like her franchise cohort  Jonathan Frakes , Dawson moved behind the camera to become a director full-time.

Getting her start overseeing episodes of "Voyager" first, Dawson moved on to helm entries of "Star Trek" spin-off "Enterprise" before broadening to other shows across television. Since 2005, Dawson has directed episodes of some of the biggest hits on TV including "Lost" and "The O.C." in 2006, eight episodes of "Cold Case," a trio of "Heroes" episodes, and more. 

We could go on and on rattling off the hit shows she's sat behind the camera for but among her most notable might be the David Simon HBO series "Treme" in 2011, "Hell on Wheels" with future starship captain Anson Mount, and modern masterpieces like "Bates Motel," "The Americans," and "This is Us." Her most recent work saw her return to sci-fi, helming two episodes of the Apple TV+ series "Foundation."

Garrett Wang as Ensign Harry Kim

Despite never seeing a rise in rank and perpetually remaining a low-level ensign, Harry Kim — played by Garrett Wang – often played a crucial role in defeating many of the enemies the crew would face in the Delta Quadrant. When "Star Trek: Voyager" left the airwaves, though, Wang bounced around, with his biggest role arguably coming in the 2005 Steven Spielberg-produced miniseries "Into the West." He has continued embracing his role as Ensign Kim by appearing at many fan conventions, where he found an entirely new calling. 

Beginning in 2010, Kim embarked on a career as an event moderator, serving as the Master of Ceremonies at that year's FedCon (a science fiction convention held in Germany). Later, he was the Trek Track Director at the celebrated Dragon Con event, held annually in Atlanta, Georgia. Over the course of his new career, Wang has held moderating duties and hosted panels and events at major pop culture conventions in Montreal, Edmonton, Phoenix, and Denver. According to Wang, his biggest role as a moderator came at the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo in 2012, where he interviewed the legendary Stan Lee .

In 2020, Wang joined forces with co-star Robert Duncan McNeill to launch "The Delta Flyers," a podcast that discusses classic episodes of "Star Trek: Voyager."

Robert Duncan McNeill as Lt. Tom Paris

Robert Duncan McNeill guest-starred in an episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" as a hotshot pilot who broke the rules and wound up booted from Starfleet. So when producers developed a similar character, they brought in McNeill to play him, resulting in brash, cavalier helm officer Tom Paris. In 2002, after "Star Trek: Voyager" ended, McNeill starred in an episode of  "The Outer Limits" revival  and a few more small roles. However, like Dawson, McNeill left acting not long after the series ended to become a director and producer, starting with four episodes of "Star Trek: Enterprise."

Into the 2000s, McNiell helmed episodes of "Dawson's Creek" and "One Tree Hill" before becoming an executive producer on the action-comedy series "Chuck" starring Zachary Levi. Ultimately he'd direct 21 episodes of that series across its five seasons. From there, McNeill went on to sit behind the camera for installments of "The Mentalist," "Blue Bloods," and "Suits." 

Since the 2010s, McNeill has served as an executive producer on further shows that included "The Gifted," the Disney+ reboot of "Turner & Hooch," and the SyFy series "Resident Alien." In addition to hosting "The Delta Flyers" podcast with co-star Garrett Wang, McNeill came back to "Star Trek" in 2022 when he voiced the character of Tom Paris in a cameo on the animated comedy "Star Trek: Lower Decks."

Ethan Phillips as Neelix

Another actor to appear on "Star Trek" before taking a leading role on "Voyager," Ethan Phillips played the quirky alien chef Neelix for all seven seasons of the show's run. A well-established veteran, his TV roles prior had included dramas like "NYPD Blue" and family hits like "Doogie Howser, M.D." Unfortunately, his role on "Voyager" never translated to big-time success after, though he hardly struggled for work. That's because he went back to his former career as a character actor.

In the ensuing years, Phillips could be seen all over the dial and beyond, with parts in "Touched by an Angel" and "8 Simple Rules" among many others, even popping up in a guest-starring role in an episode of "Star Trek: Enterprise" in 2002. Later he did a three-episode run on "Boston Legal," another Beantown-based legal drama from David E. Kelley, this one starring "Star Trek" legend William Shatner and "Deep Space Nine" alum René Auberjonois. Some of the biggest shows he's found work on during the 2010s meanwhile include "Better Call Saul" and a recurring role in the Lena Dunham comedy "Girls." He's also had roles in major movies, showing up in "Inside Llewyn Davis," "The Purge: Election Year," and "The Island."

Though he hasn't come back to "Star Trek," Phillips did return to sci-fi in 2020, joining the main cast of the HBO space comedy "Avenue 5" alongside Hugh Laurie and Josh Gad.

Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine

Though she didn't arrive on "Star Trek: Voyager" until Season 4, Jeri Ryan arguably became the series' biggest star. She came in to help liven up a series that was struggling and joined the cast as a former Borg drone named Seven of Nine . It proved to be just what the series needed and a career-defining role for Ryan. One of the few cast members of "Voyager" to parlay her role into bigger success, Ryan immediately joined the David E. Kelley legal drama "Boston Public" after the series ended.

There she had a three-season run and in 2006 she secured another starring role on another legal drama, this time in the James Woods series "Shark," with Danielle Panabaker and Henry Simmons. Smaller recurring roles came after, including multi-episode stints on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," "Two and a Half Men," and "Leverage," before Ryan returned to a main cast with her co-starring role in "Body of Proof" in 2011 alongside Dana Delany. Parts in "Helix" and "Bosch" came after, as well as brief recurring roles in "MacGyver" and "Major Crimes," leading right up to her return to "Star Trek" in 2020.

That year, Ryan joined the cast of the revival series "Star Trek: Picard." Returning to the role of Seven of Nine, she supported series lead Patrick Stewart by appearing in all three seasons, and rumor has it she may even star in a spin-off. 

Jennifer Lien as Kes

Joining the Starfleet and Maquis crew aboard Voyager was Kes, a young alien woman with mild telepathic powers and just a nine-year lifespan, and played by Jennifer Lien. Unfortunately, her character never quite gelled, and in Season 4 Lien was written out to make way for Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine.

Leaving the series in 1997, Lien's career stalled in front of the camera, though she did manage a role in "American History X" alongside "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" star Avery Brooks. However, most of her subsequent work came in animation, with voice work in "Superman: The Animated Series" — where she played Inza, the wife of Doctor Fate — and a starring role as Agent L in "Men in Black: The Series." 

Unfortunately, Lien pretty much left acting shortly after that. She married filmmaker Phil Hwang and started a family but has faced personal problems along the way. While struggling to deal with her mental health, Lien was arrested in 2015 for indecent exposure and again in 2018 for driving without a license.

Manu Intiraymi as Icheb

Late in Season 6 of "Star Trek: Voyager," a storyline saw the ship rescue a stranded vessel commanded by a group of wayward Borg children. At the conclusion of the story, four young drones join the crew, becoming a surrogate family of sorts to Seven of Nine after jettisoning their Borg identities. The eldest of them is Icheb, a teenager who becomes like a brother to Seven, played by actor Manu Intiraymi. The young actor went on to make 11 appearances across the final two seasons of the show. 

When "Voyager" ended in 2001, Intiraymi continued acting, with his largest role coming in "One Tree Hill." There he played Billy — a local drug dealer — in a recurring role in 2012. Further projects were mostly independent films like "5th Passenger" in 2017 and "Hell on the Border," a 2019 Western starring David Gyasi, Ron Perlman, and Frank Grillo. 

In 2017, Intiraymi came under fire for criticizing fellow "Star Trek" actor Anthony Rapp, who'd made accusations of sexual assault against Kevin Spacey . A few years later, fans speculated those comments may have been why he wasn't asked to return to the role of Icheb in "Star Trek: Picard," with a new actor playing the part in a scene that killed off the character.

Scarlett Pomers as Naomi Wildman

Plenty of TV shows have added a kid to shake up the status quo late into their run, and "Star Trek: Voyager" was not immune to this trope. In addition to Borg kids like Icheb, Samantha Wildman — the newborn daughter of a crewperson — became a recurring character beginning in Season 5, played by Scarlett Pomers. She'd wind up in 16 episodes, including a few where she played a leading role. In the aftermath of the end of the series, Pomers appeared in the Julia Roberts film "Erin Brockovich," and in 2001 joined the cast of the sitcom "Reba."

For six seasons Pomers starred as Kyra Hart, daughter of the show's star played by Reba McEntire. Appearing in a whopping 103 episodes, it was only Pomers' second regular role but also her last on-screen performance. When that series concluded, Pomers essentially retired from acting. Unfortunately, her exit from the stage was at least partly due to her ongoing battle with an eating disorder, and Pomers has since become an outspoken advocate for those struggling with anorexia and mental illness. In a 2019 interview with StarTrek.com , Pomers also talked about her subsequent career as a photographer, musician, and jewelry designer.

Martha Hackett as Seska

In the early seasons of "Star Trek: Voyager," one of the most compelling ongoing storylines was that of Seska, a Bajoran and former Maquis rebel and on-again-off-again lover of Chakotay. Played by recurring guest star Martha Hackett, it was later revealed that Seska was actually an enemy agent in disguise. Hackett would appear in a total of 13 episodes of the series, making it by far the largest role in her career. Still, she has appeared in some big hits over the last two decades.

Those included a small role in "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" in 2005 and an appearance in the cult horror movie "The Bye Bye Man" in 2017. It also includes one-off appearances in episodes of popular projects on the small screen, like "The Mindy Project" in 2014, "Masters of Sex" a year earlier, and a recurring role in the daytime soap "Days of Our Lives" between 2016 and 2018. Thanks to her iconic role as Seska, though, Hackett continues to be a regular on the "Star Trek" convention circuit and was interviewed for the upcoming "Star Trek: Voyager" documentary "To the Journey."

Robert Picardo as the Doctor

For 30 years, the world of science fiction meant one thing when the moniker of "The Doctor" was uttered, but that all changed in 1995 with the launch of "Star Trek: Voyager." There, actor Robert Picardo — already known for antagonistic roles in "Gremlins 2: The New Batch" and "InnerSpace" — starred as the Doctor, the nameless holographic chief medical officer aboard the Voyager. Known for his offbeat humor and cantankerous attitude, he was played to perfection by Picardo, and it would become the actor's signature role. 

Still, even after leaving sickbay as the Doctor, Picardo had a healthy career, moving quickly into a role in "The Lyon's Den" starring Rob Lowe and Kyle Chandler in 2003. A year later he joined another iconic sci-fi franchise when he secured a recurring part in "Stargate SG-1"  as Richard Woolsey, a grumpy U.S. official who opposed the Stargate program. Following a string of appearances on the flagship series, Picardo joined the main cast of "Stargate: Atlantis" in 2006. A few years later, Picardo had another repeat role, this time as Jason Cooper on "The Mentalist," and he later enjoyed a stint on the Apple TV+ drama "Dickinson."

In 2023, the actor made a guest appearance on the "Quantum Leap" revival playing Doctor Woolsey, whose name is a clear tribute to his two biggest TV roles.

Guía para adentrarse en 'Star Trek': cuál es el mejor orden para ver toda la franquicia y dónde hacerlo

Hay veces en que la vida te pone por delante una tarea difícil, como luchar contra el cambio climático o visionar cronológicamente 'Star Trek', por ejemplo. Para lo primero no podemos ayudarte (aunque reciclar y usar transporte público ayuda), pero lo segundo es algo que vas a descubrir ahora mismo.

Así que quieres adentrarte en 'Star Trek' . Reconozco que, si bien es una franquicia divertidísima que te proporcionará horas de visionado, son tantos los capítulos, desperdigados en varias series que no necesariamente continúan la anterior, que lo mismo te haces un lío. Tienes ante ti más de 600 horas, básicamente 25 días seguidos sin parar. ¿Por dónde empiezo?, preguntas. Pues nosotros te proponemos dos opciones distintas: una cronológica (bastante ortodoxa) y otra salteada . Pero antes, hay algo que debes saber...

La maldición de Star Trek

Pues sí, es necesario que clave el freno y nos meta en una carretera secundaria para que aprendas una lección de historia. Tiene que ver con la serie original de 'Star Trek' y con lo que podríamos llamar karma, si es que crees en esas cosas. Porque verás, la tercera temporada de la serie original de Star Trek estuvo rodeada de mala suerte... y malas decisiones.

¿Qué a qué problemas me refiero? Gene Roddenberry, siempre a la gresca con NBC (y con todo el mundo en general), no estaba en su mejor momento ni como autor, ni como supervisor; los genios de la ciencia ficción que ayudaron a pergeñar algunos de los mejores episodios de las temporadas uno y dos no volvieron; hubo discutibles decisiones de producción y un recorte presupuestario; la cadena trasladó la serie a la franja de la muerte, la de los viernes noche, después de una petición masiva de los fans y una jugarreta de Jerry Lewis . Entre todos la mataron y ella sola se murió.

El caso es que, a partir de entonces, las series de 'Star Trek' se caracterizan por empezar a mejorar sustancialmente… a partir de la tercera temporada . Como si algo les impidiera alcanzar su potencial hasta pasar esa barrera que la original no pudo.

Esto no quiere decir que las dos primeras temporadas de cada serie que vino después sean malas; tampoco que no haya capítulos notables hasta ese punto. Pero como serie, como producto total en el que todos los engranajes funcionan y la premisa se explota de verdad, ninguna despega hasta ese punto. Y esto te conviene saberlo antes de verlas todas; ahora sí, entramos en materia...

Orden cronológico interno

¿Qué es lo que proponemos en el orden cronológico interno? Una forma de ver cada serie y película de 'Star Trek' según la fecha en la que se ambiente dentro de la propia narración. En contra de lo que pueda parecer, este tipo de orden puede parecer un poco desesperante al principio. El motivo es que 'Star Trek' ha ido sofisticándose con los años y, como veremos, alguna serie no continúa precisamente donde lo dejó la anterior.

Además, la forma de narrar historias ha evolucionado y el planteamiento de episodio en los años 60 no tiene nada que ver con lo que se consideraba en los 80, ya ni te cuento entre los 90 y los 00. Sin embargo, es bastante satisfactorio comprobar cómo algunas piezas encajan y, para qué negarlo, el nivel general es notable. ¿Listos para comenzar el viaje?

'Star Trek: Enterprise' - La historia de los pioneros

Si quieres empezar a ver 'Star Trek' según el orden interno, tienes que empezar por una serie bastante reciente , con 'Star Trek: Enterprise' (2001-2005), y prepararte para un viaje movido. La serie, creada por Rick Berman y Brannon Braga, está ambientada en el siglo XXII. Cuenta las aventuras del capitán Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) y la tripulación del primer Enterprise capaz de alcanzar velocidad de curvatura: por tanto, de ir donde ningún otro hombre ha ido jamás, sólo que ojalá lo hubiera hecho con algo más que tumbos y una tripulación más diversa.

Gracias a la incorporación de Manny Coto (cuya serie ‘Odyssey 5’ merece un redescubrimiento), la cuarta temporada tuvo como objetivo la creación de la Federación Unida de Planetas, después de lidiar con una Guerra Fría Temporal que empezó como buena idea y terminó estrangulando hasta a los propios creadores, y la aparición de los Xindi, un conjunto de razas que salvaron a la serie de la cancelación. Es esa apuesta por la serialidad a lo largo de temporadas la que presenta, a la vez, el punto fuerte y el débil de la serie : por un lado, los personajes y sobre todo Archer ganan aristas con cada episodio; por el otro, obliga a un visionado completo.

Y a comulgar con ruedas de molino como ‘Carga valiosa’ en la segunda temporada (cuyo guionista, David Goodman, dijo que esa mierda que se emitió no es la mierda que escribió), alguna escena gratuita como de 'Los Serrano' o el desastre de final de serie llamado ‘Estos son los viajes…’, que deberías ver después de ‘La nueva generación’ o nunca, ahí ya lo que prefieras.

'Star Trek: Discovery' - La nueva en el barrio

Su planteamiento es poco ortodoxo: está ambientada diez años antes de las aventuras del Capitán Kirk, aunque aparecen múltiples elementos que sonarán a los más fans , como el mismísimo padre de Spock, Sarek. Desde los primeros episodios queda claro que la forma de narrar de esta serie tiene más en mente el modelo actual, con un misterio que solucionar en cada temporada y que se va desplegando poco a poco. Por cierto, quizás cronológicamente, antes de esta serie haya que introducir el piloto de la 'Star Trek' original, 'The Cage'.

De esta serie nos quedamos solo con las dos primeras temporadas, ya que la temporada 3 nos manda a un futuro muy distante, el del siglo 32, del que hablaremos cuando llegue el momento. De momento, esta estupenda producción que ha revitalizado la franquicia pertenece a la misma era que la 'Star Trek' original, del mismo modo que lo hace la recién llegada 'Strange New Worlds', y que se sitúa en el punto de la cronología en el que el capitán Pike, Número Uno y Spock están en la Enterprise antes de la llegada de Kirk.

'Star Trek: La serie original', 'Star Trek: La serie animada' y las películas - Los de siempre

Agárrate los machos porque te toca 'Star Trek’, la serie original, un salto quizá demasiado duro en tanto que ni la puesta en escena, ni el desarrollo dramático se parecen a 'Enterprise' y menos aún a 'Discovery' , que esto es una serie de los sesenta.

Además, Gene Roddenberry, de cara a la sindicación y por tanto a la reposición no necesariamente ordenada, exigió un botón de reinicio al final de cada episodio (metafóricamente hablando), algo que puede poner nervioso al espectador actual, acostumbrado a la narrativa a largo plazo, cuando no morosa.

Pero si puedes pasar por alto eso y aprecias el corazón de sus historias, verás una serie con unos capítulos y conceptos increíbles, una tripulación a la que es imposible no coger cariño y en especial a su núcleo, formado por Kirk, Spock, McCoy y Scotty.

Antes de saltar a las películas, que conforman una cuarta temporada, podrías hacer otro ejercicio de arqueología catódica y sumergirte en la serie animada de Filmation, de sólo dos temporadas , que llegó a expandir algunos de los capítulos de la serie original y por lo tanto se aventura, de manera tímida, en cierta continuidad narrativa.

En cuanto a las películas, hay de todo, como en la botica del Dr. “Huesos” McCoy, pero la media se sitúa en el notable y algunas podrían pasar por excelentes episodios . Son, por orden: una entrada soporífera y aún así apreciable, un clásico, dos notables filmes seguidos, un chasco salvable, otra maravilla y, bueno, una complicada de situar porque está protagonizada también por los otros.

Caminos paralelos: la línea del reboot o "Jotajotaverso"

Digo Jotajotaverso en vez de Jjverso por escribir algo pronunciable, pero espero que ya entiendas a qué me refiero: al reinicio que la franquicia tuvo en 2009 a manos de J. J. Abrams, trilero audiovisual, macguffinista de manual y buen tío en general.

Con tres películas en su haber, la primera narra un evento que crea una realidad paralela a la de la serie original, de modo que los fans más hardcore no pudieran rabiar al reescribir la serie original.

Su situación en toda esta cronología es, por tanto, dudosa : por un lado, está la rejuvenecida tripulación original; por el otro, la inclusión de un viejo Spock, para quien su mejor amigo Kirk está muerto, me llevaría a situarla entre la sexta entrega fílmica, ‘Star Trek La próxima generación’, y la serie TNG para respetar así la línea de tiempo del vulcaniano.

'Star Trek: La nueva generación' - Los otros tipos

'Star Trek: La nueva generación’ (TNG en adelante) podría ser la serie más apreciada por el espectador medio, al tener una estética más cercana a la de nuestra época y una sensibilidad respecto a la ciencia ficción más cercana a las mejores épocas del género . También es una serie en lucha constante consigo misma, no sólo como vivo ejemplo de la deriva del género de la ciencia ficción. Y es que aún sufre de ese botón de reinicio vestigial, si bien se permite cierta progresión y rebeldes ejercicios de continuidad.

Al igual que la serie original, las películas de la TNG forman una nueva temporada. La serie terminó en 1994 y en ese mismo año se estrenó su primer filme, 'Star Trek: La nueva generación’, la sexta película de todas las de Star Trek y en la que comparten protagonismo con los miembros de la serie original. Y es que es necesario haber visto TNG para entender, por ejemplo, por qué en 'Primer Contacto’ Picard odia tanto a los Borg. Una pista: tiene que ver con el apabullante final de la tercera temporada.

Al contrario que con Kirk, todas las películas de Picard, salvo ‘Primer contacto’, son de peor calidad que la serie. Y puedes despedirte de casi toda la tripulación con 'Némesis’, su inmerecido broche.

'Star Trek: Espacio Profundo Nueve' - La estacionaria

Restan dos series por descubrir, cada una con siete temporadas a sus espaldas: 'Star Trek: Espacio Profundo Nueve’ (DS9 cuando me canse de escribir el nombre) y 'Star Trek: Voyager’. Aparte del número de temporadas y de la época en la que discurren, después de TNG, no podrían ser más distintas.

La primera, protagonizada por el Capitán Benjamin Sisko, tiene lugar en una estación espacial y por tanto tiene más de Western, de relato fronterizo: apuesta por la serialidad y es, de todas, la más seria al abordar conflictos externos e internos con la misma gravedad.

Eso no quita con que tenga una primera temporada con alguno de los puntos más bajos de la franquicia, como este fragmento del capítulo ‘Sigue hasta casa’ de aquí arriba, que el propio Ronald D. Moore (creador de ‘Battlestar: Galactica’ y eminente trekkie ) vio por la televisión y se pensó si se habían vuelto locos.

Entre las mejoras, pasada la temible barrera de la segunda temporada, está la reincorporación de un notable personaje. ¿Recuerdas, poco más atrás, mi comentario de que 'Star Trek: Némesis’ supone la despedida de casi toda la tripulación de Picard? Eso es porque Worf, el carismático Klingon, llega al mando de Sisko a partir de la cuarta temporada.

Aunque nunca recomendaría el visionado suelto de la serie, sí que puedes guiarte por un truco para saber de un vistazo si el capítulo tiene más probabilidades de ser bueno: si Sisko tiene afeitada la cabeza, casi seguro que molará. El actor Avery Brooks lo llevaba pidiendo desde el principio, pero sólo cuando le dejaron se le nota más confiado… al igual que la serie.

'Star Trek: Voyager' - La que fue a por tabaco

En cuanto a 'Star Trek: Voyager’ te sorprenderá que esté protagonizada por la tripulación más diversa que se ha visto en un Enterprise, en el que las mujeres están al mando de la nave y de las tramas.

Narra las aventuras de la nave Voyager y su intento de volver a casa tras perderse en el cuadrante Delta, a 70.000 años luz de distancia. Su punto flaco es que, pese a su simulacro de serialidad, la continuidad vuelve a ser algo no muy trascendente.

A cambio, nos dejan una capitana carismática aunque algo veleta y un personaje memorable en forma de Siete de Nueve, una antigua Borg que es mucho más que una cara bonita.

Es, no obstante, una serie con sus contras y un alarmante número de episodios que se encuentran entre lo peor del universo trekkie , como ‘Momento crítico’, en el que la capitana Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) es secuestrada por el piloto Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill), que está digievolucionando a lagarto. Sólo apto para amantes de las historias románticas con salamandras.

'Star Trek: Lower Decks' - Una parodia que se las sabe todas

Seamos honestos: el fan de la ciencia ficción en general y el trekkie en particular no es especialmente devoto de que se tomen a chufa sus mitos intocables. Por eso esta magnífica serie de animación situada inmediatamente después de lo visto en 'Némesis' hace arrugar el morro a los aficionados a la franquicia más inseguros de lo suyo.

Y eso pese a que la serie tiene un punto de partida sublime: centrarnos no en lo que sucede en el glamouroso puente de mando, sino en las cubiertas bajas , donde están los becarios, la carne de cañón y la gente con opiniones incómodas. ' Lower Decks ' no solo es una parodia de 'Star Trek' que encaja a la perfección con el lore de la serie, sino que también pone en solfa sus conceptos más heredados del space opera , con el añadido de que al ser una serie oficial de la franquicia no tiene que andarse con subterfugios y puede citar la cronología de la saga sin ningún problema.

'Star Trek: Picard' - El mito se retira

Una serie que sigue dividiendo a los fans debido a su tono abiertamente pesimista y que se aparta de describir una sociedad futura en la que todo va como la seda, para centrarse en un retirado Picard hastiado de las aventuras espaciales. Una rebelión de androides lleva a la prohibición de la vida sintética, lo que da una idea del tono en el que se mueve la serie.

Para una franquicia tan creyente en un futuro brillante para la especie humana (y lo que se encuentre por ahí), 'Picard' se siente casi como una traición a ese tono, y su condición de "epílogo" a todo lo visto en las demás series refuerza su condición pesimista . Tanto esta como 'Discovery' hace que los fans se pregunten: ¿necesita este tipo de "modernización" la saga, o es precisamente ese optimismo lo que la hace atemporal? Sin duda, una pieza de debate.

'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' - Regreso a los orígenes

Un homenaje a la serie clásica de los años sesenta en toda regla. No solo es una precuela que se adelanta a la época de los míticos viajes en la Enterprise de Kirk y compañía, sino que hereda el estilo episódico, de "Planeta de la semana" original. De aquella serie recupera a Pike, Spock y Número Uno. Resultado: una producción absolutamente afín al espíritu clásico no solo en la forma, sino también en su maravilloso fondo e incluso en cierta desenfadada concepción de la ciencia ficción, que sienta como un guante a la franquicia.

Resumen del orden cronológico y dónde verlo

Por si todo esto aún no te ha quedado claro, aquí va un esquema de visionado que te deje las cosas más limpias y te permita ir tachando a medida que avanzas:

• De forma paralela, las tres películas modernas : la de 2009 (en SkyShowtime ), 'En la oscuridad' (en SkyShowtime ) y 'Más allá' (en SkyShowtime ).

• Películas de 'Star Trek' de la I a la VI : Puedes verlas en SkyShowtime.

Básicamente podemos dividir esta lista en siglos :

El siglo XXIII es el de la serie original, su precuela 'Enterprise' y la nueva 'Strange New Worlds', también una precuela.

El siglo XXIV arranca con La nueva generación y es una especie de universo compartido que comprende tres series ('LNG', 'Deep Space Nine' y 'Voyager') y las películas 'VII' a la 'X', combinadas en una misma línea de tiempo. También de la misma época (más o menos) son las últimas incorporaciones animadas a la franquicia: 'Lower Decks' y 'Prodigy'. Finalmente, en la primera película de Abrams, la destrucción de Romulus y el viaje de Spock a una época previa a la serie original ocurre después de la película 'Nemesis'.

El siglo XXV es el que se muestra en 'Picard', cronológicamente posterior al desfase total de 'Némesis' y después de que la destrucción de Romulus se atisbara en la 'Star Trek' de Abrams. En esta nueva etapa Picard está retirado en Francia, una rebelión de androides lleva a la prohibición de la vida sintética y un Cubo Borg es examinado en busca de tecnología.

Finalmente, mucho más allá, está el siglo XXXII , que es a donde nos lleva el final de la segunda temporada de 'Discovery', y se desarrolla en la tercera: una misión 900 años al futuro para salvar el mundo. Allí la mayoría del dilithium de la galaxia ha sido destruido y los motores de curvatura ya no existen, la Federación casi se ha desintegrado y la Tierra ya no forma parte de ella.

Visionado por orden de producción

A continuación, por si prefieres apreciar la evolución natural de la serie, allá va el orden cronológico en el que fue estrenada, con los años de emisión / estreno entre paréntesis:

Desorden organizado: una propuesta de visionado

Pero hay otra forma de iniciarse en el universo 'Star Trek' y es el modo en que lo descubrí yo: empezando por las películas. Puede que prefieras iniciarte en el jotajotaverso y luego saltar a las de la serie original, o antepongas las diez películas con el Kirk de William Shatner y las de 'TNG' antes de ponerte con el jotajoverso, pero sea como sea, son una atractiva puerta de entrada.

Las películas, aunque tomen el legado de 'Star Trek' para continuar o ampliar lo que no se vio en la tele, necesitan una concreción narrativa que te permite entrar de un salto en su universo y que te familiarizarán con la franquicia.

Es indudable que te perderás ciertos detalles, pero también que, dado que las dos primeras temporadas de toda serie trekkie son más áridas comparado con las que vienen después, el cariño adquirido por las pelis lo hará más llevadero.

A partir de ahí, puedes saltar a las series, empezando por ‘Enterprise’, seguir con ‘Espacio profundo nueve’ (si ves las películas primero, la aparición de Worf o los Borg no te cogerá por sorpresa) y ‘Voyager’. Cuando cualquiera de esas tres series te decepcione, puedes ver los episodios de la serie original y TNG como caramelos sueltos a intercalar. No es un visionado ortodoxo y alguno ya me saltará a la yugular, pero sí más animado.

Pero aún hay más: como todo producto cultural que se ha desarrollado a lo largo de décadas, 'Star Trek' no ha podido resistirse a introducir guiños a sí misma. Con esto quiero decir que, después de las películas, siempre puedes ver las series según el orden de emisión.

Os recuerdo además que en Xataka ya me encargué de ordenar de peor a mejor las series y pelis, con lo que sabréis mejor a qué ateneros.

Bajo las naves, los alienígenas y la parafernalia científica se esconde un producto que ha explorado como pocos la condición humana y ha preferido la reflexión sobre la violencia descerebrada para atajar los problemas. En estos tiempos, no se puede pedir más, ni exigir menos.

Historia [ ]

La USS Voyager , es la nave más nueva de la Flota Estelar. Mucho más pequeña que sus contemporáneos, como la USS Enterprise , transporta cerca de 300 tripulantes. Fue creada con el propósito de mejorar la velocidad y maniobrabilidad promedio de las naves de la Flota. Y posee la última tecnología disponible de la Federación .

Mientras perseguía una nave Maquis dentro de las Tierras Baldías , un área cercana al espacio Cardassiano que está plagada de tormentas energéticas, ambas naves fueron transportadas a 70 mil años luz, dentro de lo que se conoce como el cuadrante Delta de la galaxia. Tras el encuentro con los Kazon , una agresiva raza de ese cuadrante, la nave Maquis fue destruida y los tripulantes sobrevivientes fueron recibidos en el Voyager. Como les tomará cerca de 70 años a warp máximo volver al cuadrante Alfa, deberán sobrepasar la pena de no poder ver ni contactar a los seres queridos que ambas tripulaciones dejaron atrás.

La Capitán Kathryn Janeway , ahora a cargo de ambas tripulaciones, se ha impuesto el objetivo de explorar el cuadrante Delta con la esperanza de encontrar alguna anomalía espacial o alguna tecnología suficientemente avanzada, que los ayude a volver más rápidamente a casa.

Star trek: voyager & ds9 crossed over in the mirror universe.

Despite being stuck in the Delta Quadrant, a Star Trek: Voyager crew member briefly crossed over into the Mirror Universe to join the DS9 cast.

Despite being separated by thousands of light years, Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine crossed over inside the Mirror Universe. Voyager and Deep Space Nine were very different in tone, due to the differing approaches of the shows' respective producers, Brannon Braga and Ira Steven Behr. Where DS9 was a serialized drama that tackled huge themes, Voyager embraced a traditional episodic approach that could sometimes feel disposable and regressive . Despite their differences in tone, DS9 and Voyager are two beloved Star Trek TV shows that still delight audiences to this day via streaming, which is a testament to the versatility and timelessness of the franchise.

As the USS Voyager was stranded in the Delta Quadrant, it was hard, but not impossible, for Star Trek: Voyager to cross over into Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's Alpha and Gamma Quadrant settings. In fact, there was a surprising number of Star Trek characters who guested on Voyager from Captain Hikaru Sulu (George Takei) to Commander William T. Riker (Jonathan Frakes). Creative approaches such as intervention by Q (John de Lancie), glimpses of Starfleet's attempts to locate the missing USS Voyager, and even the Mirror Universe allowed Star Trek: Voyager to crossover with its 1990s contemporaries, including Star Trek: Deep Space Nine .

Every 1990s Era Star Trek Crossover

In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 3, episode 19, "Through the Looking Glass", Commander Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) is captured and taken to the Mirror Universe by "Smiley" O'Brien (Colm Meaney). The Rebellion in the Mirror Universe wanted Prime Sisko to convince the ex-wife of his Terran counterpart to join the resistance against the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance . As Sisko is taken to the Terran Rebellion's enclave, he meets the Mirror Universe variants of his DS9 crew mates. In the same scene Sisko also meets the Mirror Universe version of Star Trek: Voyager 's Lt. Tuvok (Tim Russ), leading a more logic-driven faction of the Rebellion.

Mirror Tuvok is the only Mirror Universe variant of a Star Trek: Voyager character that has appeared on TV.

Tuvok was included in "Through the Looking Glass" at the request of Rick Berman , who presumably wanted to strengthen the links between Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager . DS9 season 3 and Voyager season 1 aired concurrently with each other, and "Through the Looking Glass" aired on April 17, 1995, a week when there was no new episode of Voyager . In this gap between "State of Flux" and "Heroes and Demons", therefore, a brief crossover between Voyager and DS9 was a good way to keep the fledgling Star Trek show in the minds of the audience.

Every Voyager & DS9 Star Trek Crossover

"Through the Looking Glass" isn't the only crossover between Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . The Voyager pilot "Caretaker" features the USS Voyager depart from Deep Space Nine to search for the missing Tuvok and the Maquis ship, the Valjean in the Badlands. As with McCoy and Picard in the previous Star Trek pilots, DS9 's Quark (Armin Shimerman) appeared in "Caretaker" to pass the baton to Voyager . In a scene that demonstrated how green the young Ensign Harry Kim (Garrett Wang) was, he almost falls for one of Quark's latest scams, until he's rescued by Lt. Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill).

Gul Evek (Richard Poe) and Morn (Mark Allen Shepherd) are the two other Star Trek: Deep Space Nine characters that appear in the Star Trek: Voyager pilot.

A version of Star Trek: Voyager 's Doctor (Robert Picardo) appeared in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 5, episode 16, "Doctor Bashir, I Presume" alongside his creator Dr. Lewis Zimmerman (also Picardo). Technically, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine marks the first real appearance by the EMH's creator, who had previously appeared in Voyager as a holographic replica. The real Zimmerman would later appear in Star Trek: Voyager season 6, episode 24, "Life Line", which also featured Lt. Reginald Barclay (Dwight Schultz) and Counselor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) further strengthening the bonds between different corners of the Star Trek universe.
