In the heart of Michigan’s upper peninsula, it’s hard to find a better base than Munising. The town serves as the gateway to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore but also a great jumping off point for many other attractions along Lake Superior.

After reading this guide you’ll be ready to plan your top things to do in Munising MI, from outdoor activities and boat tours to restaurants and more!

Things to do in Munising area

Experiencing Pictured Rocks is by far one of the best things to do in Munising, Michigan and the reason most people come here. There are plenty of ways you can enjoy the park. You can easily walk to numerous waterfalls like Munising Falls, the Au Sable light station (with shipwrecks rising from the beach below if you walk down that way for your return), and the picturesque lookouts at Log Slide and Grand Sable via dozens of hiking trails. You’ll find plenty of options for new hikers and outdoor enthusiasts alike!

Be sure to visit the Miners Castle overlook (image at the beginning of this section) during golden hour. Even if you head out with Pictured Rocks Cruises (more on that later), the stunning colors and view over Grand Island are the perfect way to wrap up your day surrounded by natural beauty.

Personally I’d skip the Sand Point Marsh Trail (not enough to see) and the Beaver Basin Wilderness Loop (much longer than the ranger told us!). Instead next time we’ll hike Chapel Falls or Mosquito Falls if there hasn’t been a major storm the day prior.

Sand Point beach

Sand Point (right at the western end of the National Lakeshore) is a lovely beach with warm water and beautiful sunsets. Grab some pizza to go and end your day with a picnic here!

Pictured Rocks boat tour

A relaxing boat ride with Pictured Rocks Cruises to see the colorful sandstone cliffs should definitely be on your Munising itinerary, as it’s one of the best ways to visit Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. When you’re in the area, keep an eye on the forecast and try to book the day before your intended boat ride. As the official concessioner, they run lots of boat tours.

You’ll pop into sea caves, cruise by Chapel Rock and more as you enjoy the spectacular views on Lake Superior.

If the weather looks good, I recommend taking the last classic cruise that’s before the sunset cruise for brilliant colors and views in both directions. We took the sunset cruise and by that time a gorgeous afternoon had turned into an overcast evening (which happens often I think) and it was completely dark on the way back from our boat ride.

Glass bottom shipwreck tours

One thing we didn’t have time for – but will do next time – is a glass bottom shipwreck tour. Due to its extreme depth, there are many shipwrecks in Michigan along the shores of Lake Superior.

This two hour boat tour takes you over two different shipwrecks: the Bermuda in a bay of Grand Island and the Herman H. Hettler closer to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore as you cruise through Munising Bay.

During the summer months this tour runs three to five times per day, with the last tour at 4pm. Be sure to reserve your tickets a few days before you want to go!

Kitch-iti-kipi

The “big cold spring” (from the Ojibwe language of the area’s indigenous community) at Palms Book State Park is an incredible site! The water is crystal clear all the way to its 40ft depth and has an other-worldly emerald color.

As you go across on a rope-propelled raft – an unforgettable experience in and of itself – you’ll see fish swimming below you in this serene place. It’s an incredibly popular site in the summer, so plan to arrive early – it’s about 50 minutes from Munising. But I promise, it deserves a spot on your Upper Peninsula bucket list!

If you need a little r&r after all that exploring, continue south from Kitch-iti-kipi to ThompsonRogers Roadside Park, a lovely beach on the north side of Lake Michigan. It offers warm, calm water and plenty of sand for playing amidst pristine UP surroundings. When you’re done, you can head over to see the East Breakwater Lighthouse in town as well.

Lakenenland

Lakenenland is an incredible, privately owned but publicly accessible sculpture garden. Artist Tom Lakenen (who we had the pleasure of meeting on-site) uses his immense skill as a pipe fitter to transform scrap material into anything you can possibly imagine. Park the car and wear your good walking shoes so you don’t miss a thing as you explore! Be sure to buy a t-shirt at the end to support Tom’s work.

This college town in the Upper Peninsula has a totally different vibe than the rest of the region! You’ll find craft breweries, coffee shops, ice cream, creative dining options and quirky shops in town. It’s also home to the iconic red Marquette Harbor Lighthouse. Marquette makes the perfect lunch stop en route from Munising to Houghton .

Sugarloaf Mountain

Just north of Marquette, you can’t miss Sugarloaf Mountain! It’s one of the best hikes in the Upper Peninsula. Though the trail is only about a 1.5 mile loop, it covers around 1,000 feet of elevation (some of that is on graded trail and some is on stairs). I’d rate it “moderate”, and we were far from the only family out there ready to explore.

The views from the top are simply stunning! There will be no doubt that you’re in the great outdoors as you take in the 360 degree views of the surrounding area. As an extra motivator, in July there are wild blueberries to collect along the trail – be sure to use Seek or another app to verify plants before you eat.

Where to stay in Munising, MI

There are plenty of lodging options to choose from in the Munising area.

• Holiday Inn Express Munising – Lakeview – We stayed here and it was excellent! If you book a balcony room (as we did) you can actually see Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in the distance from you room. Check out our room’s sunset view over Grand Island above – Pictured Rocks is off to the right outside of the frame. There’s a huge indoor pool, a lovely patio looking out to Lake Superior and rooms for up to six people!
• Roam Inn – If you’d rather stay in downtown Munising, consider Roam Inn. It’s upstairs from the excellent Tracey’s restaurant, which is the perfect place to enjoy a high-end dinner while admiring the colorful sky over Lake Superior. Roam Inn offers rooms for two or four people.

Restaurants near Munising, Michigan

• Tracey’s – As I mentioned above, this is the place to be for fine dining in downtown Munising. Be sure to reserve a patio table shortly before sunset and grab a cocktail while you wait for your dinner to arrive.
• Pictured Rocks Pizza – Grab a top-quality pie to go and enjoy it as the sun goes down at nearby Sand Point beach. If it’s already dark, you can take advantage of their large turf patio to hang out on a summer evening over pizza and a soda.
• Falling Rock Cafe – Sadly we didn’t have a chance to pop in here but this coffee shop and bookstore also has simple fare for breakfast and lunch. It’s a popular spot for live music too!
• Frosty Treats – Fantastic sundaes in the heart of Marquette!

• Clyde’s Drive In – Burger lovers will have a great time at the Manistique outpost of this UP favorite. The food is delicious, fresh and affordable. There’s even a “Jr. Burger” for those with a smaller appetite, which ran us $3.45 in 2023. It’s the perfect post-beach dinner stop!

Munising Michigan History

Until the 19th century, the area now known as Munising was the home of Native Americans. The Ojibwe Tribe lived in the area and referred to it as “Minisiing,” a word that means “island in the lake” to reference the large island that rose out of the waters of the bay.

During the early decades of the 19th century, the Munising Iron Company purchased the land, and the first European settlers began to inhabit the area. As a result, the Ojibwe Tribe relocated, and the town that would eventually become Munising was established.

The settlement was recognized in earnest by 1868 when the first Post Office was built here. Around the same time, the iron company failed, and the people who lived there struggled to make ends meet.

By the turn of the 20th century, however, the village was officially incorporated and there was a population of about 500 thriving residents. Their commitment to Munising allowed it to become a city in 1915, and before they knew it, Munising was a boom town of sorts.

The lumber industry has long defined life in Munising, but today, many people work across various sectors to contribute to the city’s economy. Generally, tourism plays a major role in modern-day life here.

Michigan's Upper Peninsula is home to an endless array of natural beauty. But perhaps the crown jewel of the Upper Peninsula is the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore . Hugging the coast of Lake Superior, the lakeshore is known for its beaches, waterfalls, sand dunes, forests, and, of course, the gorgeously colored sandstone cliffs.

The rocks get their name from the streaks of mineral stain that drip down the side of the cliffs, creating stripes of different colors, like red, orange, blue, green, brown, black, and white. Each color represents a different mineral that bubbles up through the cracks of the limestone and subsequently trickles down the face of the rocks.

The cliffs themselves stand anywhere from 50 to 200 feet directly over the glassy, blue-green surface of Lake Superior. Beyond the 15 miles of cliffs, the park also has 12 miles of beaches , more than 100 miles of trails , lakes, streams, and forest.

Within the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is one of the most famous monuments – Miners Castle Rock. The famous limestone landmark juts out into Lake Superior, perched atop one of the striated stretches of cliff.

Access: Unlike many of the other cliff faces in the park, Miners Castle Rock can be seen from a viewing platform, meaning anyone with a vehicle can see the rock, rather than having to hike to other viewpoints or hop aboard a boat to see the formations from the lake. It's a short, paved walk from the parking lot right to the viewing platform, which makes it accessible to almost everyone.

If you wanted to put in a little extra effort, a mile-long stretch of trail leads from the top of the cliff down to Miners Beach .

One of the best perks about Miners Castle is that visitors do not have to pay an entrance fee , so you can get an up-close look at the pictured rocks without having to pay.

Within the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is yet another natural landmark that is worth the trip. The rushing Miners River drops 50 feet over beautiful sandstone cliffs, resulting in one of the strongest and prettiest waterfalls within the Upper Peninsula .

While you'll need to hike in from the parking lot, the hike to the waterfall is rather mild at just 1.2 miles round trip . A parking lot sits about four miles north of Highway 58 off Miners Castle Road, so it's fairly easy to access. It will take about 20 minutes to reach the waterfall from the parking area.

Once you reach the waterfall, you'll have to walk down more than 70 steps to reach the viewing platform to watch the water cascade over the ledge and crash on the rocks below. If it's summertime, you can go all the way down to the swimming hole at the bottom of the falls.

Camping is also permitted in the area, but a permit is needed as well as some experience, since it's backcountry camping in this part of the park.

Even easier to access than Miners Falls is Munising Falls, which is within the city limits of Munising. Located near Sand Point Road, near the Munising Memorial Hospital, this 50-foot waterfall is easily accessible from an 800-foot trail .

A paved trail from a parking lot winds up a shaded canyon following Munising Creek and leads you directly to the base of the falls. Several viewing platforms are available for multiple different angles of the falls. Note: In winter you can enjoy some of the spectacular ice formations that crystallize along the rock face.

The best time to visit the falls is in the spring after the snow melts. This is when the waterfall is at its most powerful as it plunges down over the sandstone cliff. A visitor center has a small bookstore, as well as exhibits on the geology and forest history of the area.

Lake Superior has many beautiful beaches along the coast, but one of the best for the Munising area is Sand Point Beach. Located at the end of Sand Point Road, about four miles out of town, this beach is one of the best beaches in Michigan , particularly along the Upper Peninsula. The beach is part of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore .

Residents and visitors alike love it for its white sand, calm water, and beautiful views. From the beach, it's easy to see Grand Island and the East Channel Lighthouse.

All throughout the summer, you'll find the beach packed with people swimming, sunbathing, and grilling on the public grills. Because the water is relatively shallow at the beach, the water is much warmer than at other beaches along Lake Superior.

For people who need something active to do, the Sand Point Marsh Trail runs for half a mile around a beautiful wetland area, known for its birds, turtles, leaves, and frogs.

If you haven't noticed by now, Munising has a lot of waterfalls in and around the vicinity. Another great one to check out is Wagner Falls, which flows from Wagner Creek. The 20-foot waterfall is easy to access and a beautiful place to visit when you're waterfall hopping in Michigan .

You can access the falls via M-94, past the intersection of M-94 and M-28. It's actually on the side of the road, where a small walk leads to the falls, which are surrounded by gorgeous pine and hemlock trees. It will take about five minutes to get to the falls from your car , and the walk is less than a quarter of a mile on a flat stretch of boardwalk, making it super easy to access.

After Wagner Creek tumbles over the falls, it flows into the Anna River, which then continues on to be one of the tributaries of Lake Superior.

The woods and fields around Munising are a treasure trove of great hiking trails, particularly within the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. One of the most popular hikes is the Chapel Rock & Chapel Beach trail, particularly if you're looking for a nice, solid day hike.

The entire trail is a 6.2-mile round trip and weaves past Chapel Falls and continues on to Chapel Rock and Chapel Beach. Chapel Rock is a lingering remnant from the Cambrian age, which dates back nearly 4,000 years ago. Its shape is thanks to erosion over the centuries. An archway once connected the structure to the mainland, but that collapsed in the 1940s.

Do you notice the white pine tree that sits on top of Chapel Rock? That tree is estimated to be about 250 years old.

Next to the rock is Chapel Beach , surrounded by high bluffs and carpeted with soft, fluffy sand that leads out into Lake Superior.

Just off the shores surrounding Munising is the naturally beautiful Grand Island. Part of the Hiawatha National Forest, the island sits just half a mile offshore in Lake Superior.

A paradise for nature lovers, the island is beloved for its viewpoints, beaches, forests, and lakes within lakes. It is rich with regional history, too. Settlers came to the island in the early 1800s. A trading post was established in 1846. Today the homes that you see on the island date back more than a century.

In 1990 Grand Island became a National Recreation Area and since has been a hot spot for outdoor recreation, from mountain biking to camping .

Visitors can get to Grand Island from Munising using the Grand Island Ferry . The ferry landing is just off M-28, about four miles west of Munising. Note that the ferry is seasonal and will run throughout the day from the Friday before Memorial Day until early October.

Lake Superior is one of the largest lakes in the world . Its shoreline measures roughly 2,726 miles. One of the best ways to see the entire lake is to drive the Lake Superior Circle Tour.

The Lake Superior Circle Tour is a 1,300-mile self-guided driving tour that travels all along Lake Superior and passes through Ontario, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and, of course, Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

One of the best things to do in Munising is to drive a portion of the Circle Tour that stops at scenic points all along the Michigan coast of Lake Superior.

Of course, the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is one of the most popular sightseeing stops along the Circle Tour, but travelers can drive the entire stretch from Sault Ste. Marie, which sits on the border with Ontario, all the way to the border of Wisconsin. You can even keep going up through Minnesota and back into Ontario to complete the entire circuit.

Speaking of sites along the Circle Tour, Lakenenland Sculpture Park is a quirky and interesting little slice of culture tucked between the trees. Situated between Munising and Marquette, Lakenenland Sculpture Park has a walking path (which doubles as a driving path) through a course lined with peculiar recycled iron sculptures, created by Tom Lakenen.

Lakenen created more than 80 funky and whimsical massive works of art that have all been created from recycled iron. He has been constructing these sculptures in what he refers to as his "junkyard" for more than 25 years. The park is free to enter and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Want a cool way to see the park? Visit during the winter, and you can go across the course on snowmobile. The park area also has a pond, fireplace, and a playground.

The coasts of Michigan are famous for their many lighthouses, and the Upper Peninsula is no exception. Munising has many lovely lighthouses near the city – five to be exact – but one to visit in particular is the Munising Front Range Lighthouse.

The historic lighthouse was built in 1908 and was used to help ships navigate the narrow channel into Munising Bay. It stands at 58 feet tall and works with a second lighthouse, the Munising Rear Range Lighthouse, to ease vessels toward the channel.

The grounds around the tower are open, though the tower itself is closed. Today it is managed by the National Park Service.

This sliver of culture in downtown Munising has been on display since 2018. Art in the Alley sits near the Harvest House, displaying more than 70 reproduced works of art by residents of Alger County in the Upper Peninsula.

2 Days in Munising, Michigan: What to See & Eat

Munising, Michigan is a real-life painting. A destination where you’ll think ‘this is Michigan?’ at least a few times a day. Turquoise waters. Painted cliffs. Countless trails. It’s amazing…yet confusing…

Has this always been here?

Welcome to a different time. A different place. An escape like no other. Travel to Munising, located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and you will want to stay for days on end. Their slogan, Picture Perfect, is just that— perfect .

What to See in Munising, Michigan

Munising is one of the busier areas of the U.P. given its beauty, attracting tourists from around the world—that is if they’ve heard about it. Waterfalls of all shapes and sizes, sandstone cliffs as high at 200 feet, lighthouses, islands, and beaches with water the color of the Caribbean Sea.

No matter what type of outdoor activity is your jam, you’ll find it in Munising, Michigan. You won’t get it all done in a day or two. But I have a few places that should be high on your list!

Pictured Rocks Cruises

One of the most popular things to do in Munising, Michigan is to hop on a cruise that tours the Pictured Rocks.

You must see Pictured Rocks from the water. There are no if’s, and’s, or but’s about it. And to clear up any confusion; no, this 42-mile stretch of rock is not painted by humans. Au naturel. And she’s gorgeous.

Ways to Tour Pictured Rocks

You choose whether to tour by cruise, kayak, or a personal boat. It does need to be a very, very calm day for a personal boat. We’re talking the big, big Lake Superior here.

We went with the cruise tour based on reliability. Now, I’m not someone who seeks out tours—I often find them boring. But I found this one to be worth every penny.

Classic Cruise, Spray Falls Cruise, or the Sunset Cruise:

• Classic Cruise ; $38, 2.5 hours, all of the stops besides Spray Falls
• Spray Falls Cruise ; $45, just over 2 hours, all of the stops including Spray Falls
• Sunset Cruise ; $38, 2.5 hours, Classic Cruise at sunset

We went with the Spray Falls option. Two hours was plenty and you get to see Spray Falls as a bonus site. My advice is to try to get on a Spray Falls Cruise but if times don’t work out or Spray Falls is full, don’t feel like you missed out on a ton if you are on the Classic Cruise.

Just get on a boat! It’s recommended to book this in advance. They were completely sold out the day we tried and we had to wait until the following day.

My Highlights:

Lovers’ leap.

I love this spot with the tunnel and gorgeous water. If you do one of the kayak tours, you can go right underneath! P.S. those kayak trips didn’t look easy when I was watching from the cruise ship. Lots of hard work!

Between the color of the water and the paint on the rocks, this makes for one of those ‘this is Michigan?’ moments…

I think going a little farther down the shoreline is worth the $7 extra. Plus…waterfall!

Here’s the cruise ship. You’re allowed to start lining up 1 hour before launch. It’s first-come, first-serve on seating with the top-right being most desirable.

We arrived at about 12:05 for a 1:00 cruise and were second in line. There are benches to sit on and a gift shop nearby, with a lot of cute clothes and souvenirs, if you can get one person in the group to stay back!

And a couple of last tips:

• Snacks : They sell bottled drinks and light snacks at the bottom level.
• Clothes : Make sure to bring a long sleeve, even if it’s a nice day!
• Tip : Don’t forget to give your tour guides a little cash!

Hike to Chapel Falls + Rock + Beach

There are tons of hikes in the area whether you want to chase a waterfall, find a beach, or just get out into nature and explore. I was determined to get to Chapel Rock and I am so glad we did. It far exceeded my expectations and was my favorite part of our time in Munising, Michigan.

The hike is 6.2 miles roundtrip, mostly flat land, and worth every single step. And the reward will take your breath away.

Your first landmark will be Chapel Falls and you’ll continue on your way to hit Chapel Rock, which is in the same area as Chapel Beach.

Chapel Falls

You have a 5k (3.1 miles) to the ultimate destination. (And the same back, obviously.) The bonus? Right at about 1.25 miles in is Chapel Falls which is perfect to break it up and boost your energy with a good view.

The spacious path is well-kept and remains flat. Once you’re here, take a little break to admire the falls and snap some photos.

Now sure, this is cool and a checkmark next to “waterfall.” But don’t you dare walk to Chapel Falls and then turn back towards the parking lot. That’s like ordering a steak and skipping out after the salad bar…keep walking.

Chapel Rock

You have 1.85 miles left which are mostly flat until the end. And you will make it to one of the most memorable stops in the entire U.P. The water looks downright fake, a large rock formation hangs over it, and oh yeah, there’s a tree growing out of it? Your head will turn like a dog who hears the word “outside.” Appreciate the view. Snap photos. Remain in awe.

And just when you’ve realized this is still real life, you’ll peek over to the left and find the most gorgeous white sand beach…

Chapel Beach

My only regret was not staying at this beach longer. I recommend doing your hike in the morning and then spending a few afternoon hours here. It’s so relaxing and enjoyable.

Take a backpack, stick a small cooler pack in there with drinks, and a couple of snacks (keep it as light as you can), and I promise you, you will enjoy yourself.

• Parking : Unless you get here in the early morning, be prepared for the parking lot to be full. No worries, you can parallel park along the path. It’s just a bit of an extra walk.
• Free : There is no park fee to enter!
• Airplane Mode : You will have bad service so switch into airplane mode and save battery for the camera.
• What to Wear : Definitely full shoes over sandals and bring a layer for overtop. You never know.

Miners Castle Overlook

Another well-known destination in the area. This is great to add to your list because it doesn’t take long to accomplish yet it’s one of the most beautiful places!

From downtown Munising, drive east on H-58 for about 5 miles and take a left on Miners Castle Rd. It’s another 5 miles and you’ll hit the parking lot. It’s a super short walk to the Upper Overlook (top picture) and not much farther (less than half a mile) to the Lower Overlook (bottom picture).

Note: You’re also very close to Miners Beach (just east) and on your drive in will notice where to turn to hike to Miners Falls.

Get Out on the Water

Like I mentioned, it has to be a very calm day to get out on your own boat and explore the full Pictured Rocks. That said, the bay is typically much calmer and gives the opportunity to get out there on your own.

You’ll see beautiful rocks (not quite to the extent of the big lake), can cruise to an island or two, and tootle around. We came out early one morning to eat breakfast and get the day started.

Pete’s Lake

If you are looking to get out of the hustle and bustle of Munising, Michigan, and into the peace and quiet, head about 15 minutes south on NF-13 and you will hit Pete’s Lake in Hiawatha National Forest. There’s a place to swim and plenty of lake to fish on. Note: there’s no dock to launch your boat so that parts a little tricky!

We stayed in an Airbnb right near here called the Hiawatha Cabins. Though they are definitely “rustic,” it was a decent place to stay. They recently took on new ownership and they were wonderful people who are doing a lot to revamp and improve the cabins.

Explore Downtown Munising MI

Between the hiking, fishing, boating, and beaching we didn’t spend a ton of time exploring the downtown area. Not to mention it’s full of construction right now – August 2020. That said, it’s a cute area with little shops full of gifts, U.P. apparel, art, and more.

Where to Eat in Munising Michigan

You’ll come across these all over the place. And if you’re in the area, you have to get one somewhere! Think of it as a chicken pot pie and a hot pocket getting married.

These homemade crusts are filled with beef, chicken, or vegetable, and combined with potatoes, onions, carrots, and rutabaga to make what’s called a pasty. Btw, it’s “pass-tee,” not “pay-stee.”

I recommend Muldsoon’s, a family-owned, and operated restaurant and gift shop that make some of the best pasties around. There are two locations in Munising, Michigan, and if the original one (right off Munising Ave.) is really busy just head over to the other one on Elm St. Same recipe! And we were in and out of there in 60 seconds. P.S. ketchup is crucial.

Quick, delicious food in a great spot. Order at the counter (get the tots!) and then pick either indoor seating or outdoor overlooking the water. Eh! Burger has burgers (obviously), chicken, and fresh whitefish with a variety of toppings.

I went with the Whitefish Sandwich (surprise, surprise) and it was good, not great. I mean, it says burger in the name so that’s my own fault. But seriously, get the tots! Oh, and you can order beer/wine here!

TIP: Going on the Pictured Rocks Cruise? This is a great spot to eat and have a beer before or after. You can see the cruise ships from the patio and it’s about a 42-second walk.

Cap’n Ron’s Smoked Fish & Sausage

If you’ve been following along, you know I love a good piece of fish. And smoked? Oof. A delicacy in my eyes. Grab some from this run-down shack that’s been running through 5 generations.

We got a pound of smoked Whitefish and a pound of smoked Trout and both were delicious. The whitefish was mouth-watering and I would 100% stop if I was driving through. The trout had a great smoked flavor—definitely had a fishier taste to it though. The people were friendly and you can’t beat the prices. Only $16 for a LOT of fish.

BONUS: Stuckos in Marquette, Michigan

If you are coming from the west, make a lunch pit stop in Marquette. Stuckos is delicious! Fun, laid-back sports bar vibe with an outdoor patio. The waitstaff was friendly and I loved LOVED the Brussels sprouts which were bursting with flavor. The whitefish sandwich, fried in homemade beer batter, was perfectly cooked. I’ll go back again!

Wagner Falls is Jaw-Dropping!

Wagner Falls in the UP is a short flat walk along a lovely curving boardwalk and through a beautiful woods. This is one of our favorite falls in the Munising area as the walk is short, very scenic and jaw-dropping! 

The parking area is gravel and dirt which can be VERY muddy.   

Alger Falls

Alger Falls is a very pretty roadside waterfall.  You can see it from your car!  Located at the M-28 and M-94 intersection east of Munising, this Upper Peninsula waterfall is best viewed in the later afternoon for the best light.

Munsing Falls  is a very short, paved trail that is 800 feet one way. It is shaded most of the way with lots of trees and the sandstone canyon along Munising Creek.  The main paved trail leads to the viewing platform to view the breathtaking 50-foot waterfall.

We love heading up the stairs to the higher viewing platforms to see a different perspective of Munising Falls.  It's one heck of a view!!  Pets allowed on trail and stairs. I hear it's fantastic in the winter!

Miner's Falls

Beautiful 1.2 mile round trip walk to the falls.   Great views on the platform that is level with the top of the falls. If you are agile and wearing decent shoes, it's fun to climb down to the lower level. It's lots of boulders and using your hands, feet and full body to climb down.  

Bay Furnace Ruins

Bay Furnace Ruins is a great place to visit as not only can you see the furnace, but you can find pieces of hot sand that was melted to form glass.  Be sure to visit this area in evening as the water is smooth like glass and the light is fantastic on the ruins. 

There is a porta john toilet here and lots of parking. Free spot to visit.

As you can see from the photo on the left, you can find pieces of hot sand that melted to form glass. These pieces are very shiny and interesting!  

The beach is fantastic for walking as the sand is amazing as are the views!

Rip Tide Ride

We really REALLY enjoyed our exciting Rip Tide Ride around Grand Island. This is another great family owned business to support as they are so friendly and care about your well being. 

You will scream with delight during the zig zags and high speed turns.   We got to see waterfalls so close up that we could touch them!  We dipped into caves, saw lighthouses and enjoyed great views of Grand Island.

• Book this at least 3 days before your visit as times fill up.
• No food or drink is allowed on the boat.
• Leave your purse in the car. You don't need to have it sliding around.
• Don't wear floppy sun hats as it will blow off.  A tight visor or baseball hat is better if you need to wear a hat.  
• Wear sunscreen!
• It will be very windy.  Girls, put your hair in a braid or bun or you will have a rats nest!
• It's best to arrive 30 minutes prior.  
• If the parking lot is full near the gift shop, there is another one across the street.
• The gift shop has restrooms. 
• Take note, the lake is much cooler.  Even if it's 75 outside, wear pants and bring a sweatshirt or long sleeve t-shirt.
• Oh, and you might get a little wet from the spray during the high speed turns but we didn't.  
• No bathrooms on the boat. You will remain seat belted the entire time.

Want more activities on the water?  Check out the Glassbottom Shipwreck Tours, Pictured Rocks Kayaking and Pictured Rocks Cruises for more fun on the water! We recommend later afternoon/evening cruises as the light is on the rocks at this time. 

You can also rent pontoons  at Superior Pontoon Rentals to view Pictured Rocks, caves and waterfalls on your own. Or you can dock close to shore and spend time on Grand Island exploring historic landmarks, lighthouses, waterfalls, and scenic overlooks. You can rent them for the evening, half or full day. Great for families!

There are several hotels in Munising, here are a few we recommend!

AmericInn by Wyndham Wetmore Munising 

We have stayed at the AmericInn a couple times as it is in a good location for the falls, restaurants and beaches.  I liked that the bedrooms were separate with a closing door that blocked hall noises while sleeping. We utilized the nice pool and hot tub too.

Holiday Inn Express Munising - Lakeview

This pretty Munising Hotel has a fantastic breakfast, wonderful views of the Grand Island Harbor Bay and very nicely furnished rooms. You will definitely enjoy your stay in this Holiday Inn Express in Munising .

Munising Michigan Camping

There are several campgrounds in Munising.  Check the map above for the location you are interested in and then check their website for booking and more info.

Munising Tourist Park Campground -  E8518 M-28, Munising. Rustic lakefront camping pitches

Bay Furnace Campgroun d -  E7900 W, M-28 has simple campsites with fire rings. We love this area, it's right on the water with spectacular views!

Munising Michigan Restaurants

We really enjoyed our meal and time spent at the family owned Rollin' Smoke BBQ.   The owners were outside mingling and they were very kind.  Walk up to the window, order your meal and it will be ready very quickly.  Enjoy your meal on the picnic tables outside or wander a few feet to the bar. We really enjoyed the brisket and fries! Be sure to go out and support these guys!  

Pictured Rocks Pizza is also a great stop for very fresh ingredients.  It's a Subway style pizza place where you see the ingredients and pick what you want on your pizza.  We enjoyed one half of our pizza with pepperoni, sausage and garlic.  The other half had feta cheese, spinach and tomato bruschetta.  You can call ahead and order but it's fun to watch your pizza being made in person. 

We All Scream For Ice Cream!

I really think you aren't on vacation unless you have ice cream !  Not only is the name super witty and the building is pink (why we stopped there, honestly), but the shop is cute and the ice cream is very creamy and delicious.

May may overlook Munising in favor of popular destinations like Marquette, which is located only about 40 miles away. However, the Michigan town is an absolute must-see adventure.

For those visiting the city during the summer or fall, make it a point to stop by the Munising Visitor Center, which is located at 501 M-28, Munising, MI 49862, for helpful information about the local area.

If you can't make it to the center, worry not. The Munising Visitor's Bureau offers an interactive map app , which is available for download on Google Play and the App Store. Their 2021 Munising Visitors Guide can also be accessed online, or tourists can request to have one mailed out to them via their website.

16 How To Spend The Perfect Day In Munising, Michigan

Begin the day with a filling breakfast at Falling Rock Cafe & Bookstore before visiting the Pictured Rocks Interpretive Center to learn about the area. Then, spend the better part of the day exploring all the amazing sights that Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore has to offer.

Take a Glass Bottom Shipwreck Tour, a guided kayaking tour, or opt to traverse the waters of Munising Bay via a Riptide Ride, seeing the historic lighthouses and the magnificent views of Grand Island along the way.

For lunch the choice is simple: a juicy patty at Eh! Burger or a slice of pie from Pictured Rocks Pizza. Later, tackle the Hiawatha National Forest for an adventurous afternoon of hiking through the lush terrain before finishing the day relaxing on Sand Point Beach.

15 Family Friendly Things To Do In Munising, Michigan

Munising may be a small town with around 2,300 residents, but in the summer the area feels much busier as thousands of visitors head to the Alger County seat to take in the sights and sounds of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Being located on the shore of Lake Superior and at the west end of Pictured Rocks makes visiting Munising one of the most-visited cities in the Upper Peninsula. Easy access from M-28 also makes this an easy trip from other attractions like Marquette to the west and Sault Ste. Marie to the east. We’ve been visiting this area regularly since 1993, and decided to share our picks for 15 family-friendly things to do when you visit Munising.

Pictured Rocks Boat Cruises – Back in February we featured a post showcasing some of the great views that can be found on the Pictured Rocks Boat Cruise. These cruises are incredibly well-run and do a great job of passing by all of the well-known rock formations along the shoreline. The towering limestone cliffs at Pictured Rocks are so picturesque they are often used in state tourism materials, and this cruise is one of the best ways to see them. An added bonus is that an afternoon cruise each day goes a bit longer and head all the way out to Spray Falls or a sunset cruise leaves in the evening and provides some amazing photo opportunities. Riptide Ride – A rather new addition to the area’s boating options, the Riptide Ride has proven to be very popular with visitors. This jet boat travels around Grand Island and gets visitors up close to two lighthouses, scenic cliffs and rock formations, waterfalls and possibly even some bald eagles. This is a shorter ride than the other options and one of the best ways to see Grand Island. The boat also moves a bit faster than the other cruises and is capable of 360-degree spins. Glass Bottom Shipwreck Tours – Each of the three cruise options in Munising brings a unique specialty, and this glass bottom shipwreck tour does a great job in showing off the sights of Grand Island while also demonstrating how harsh and unforgiving Lake Superior can be as it visits several historic shipwrecks. Up-close views of the East Channel Lighthouse and the wreckage of ships like the Herman H. Hettler (1926) keep this cruise exciting for visitors of all ages. Munising Falls – One of the easiest waterfalls to get to in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Munising Falls is located just east of downtown and is reached by a short hike. Follow the signs to turn onto Washington St. and to the large parking area. A small interpretive center and restrooms are located on site, and the trail is handicap accessible. Munising Creek plummets 50 feet here, and since water flow can vary quite a bit the best times to visit are in the spring or after a heavy rainfall. Stairs off to either side of the main trail lead up to viewing platforms higher up, visitors are encouraged to stay behind the fences and not go under the waterfall.

Horseshoe Falls – Located at 602 Bell Ave., Horseshoe Falls is unique among the waterfalls in Munising as it is the only one an entry fee is required for. A gift shop, trout pond, informative signs and a picturesque waterfall await visitors here, and while the fee may seem a bit steep at least this waterfall is still accessible to the public and not fenced off on private property. Kids will enjoy feeding the fish, and the gift shop also sells ice cream. Check out  http://www.uppermichiganwaterfalls.com/ for dates and hours of operation as well as current fees.

Wagner Falls – This state scenic site is located south on M-94 near its intersection with M-28, and is a great spot to relax and take in the scenic drops on Wagner Creek. The trail is short, smooth and well-maintained, and a viewing platform provides a great place for photographs. A great forested setting and consistent water flow makes this a great stop in any season.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Headquarters – For help in planning your visit to any of the locations in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, be sure to stop in at the park headquarters on M-28. Maps, trail information and backcountry camping permits are a few of the things you can track down here, and other brochures highlight places of interest in the region and across the state.

Miners Beach – The most popular and easiest beach to get to in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is Miners Beach, a great stretch of sandy shore located where the Miners River empties into Lake Superior. At times when it’s too cold to swim in the big lake, the water in the river can often be a warmer alternative. Miles of cliffs can be seen to the east, and this is also a popular point of entry for sea kayakers. If you spend a decent amount of time here, chances are you’ll see a Pictured Rocks Cruise boat pass by and maybe get a glimpse of some of the park’s wildlife as well.

Miners Falls – The Miners River plunges more than 40 feet over an outcropping of sandstone rock, making it one of the tallest and most powerful falls in the park. Reached by a 1.2-mile round trip hike, these falls and near picturesque Miner’s Beach and the always popular Miner’s Castle rock formation. Follow H-58 east from Munising, then follow H-13 north and follow signs for Miners Falls to the parking area. Trail is mostly flat, wide and smooth.

Miners Castle – One of the most iconic rock formations in the state, Miners Castle is also one of the most-visited locations in Munising. There were once two stacks here but rockfall in 2006 left it in its present state. A short trip east on H-58 leads to the road that will take you to Miners Castle, Miners Falls and Miners Beach and if you’re only going to visit a few Pictured Rocks sites while in town, this should be at the top of your list. A short trail is paved and leads to a handicap accessible viewing platform, while another trail leads right up to the formation itself.

Tannery Falls/Memorial Falls – These two waterfalls are among the best “hidden gems” in town. The path to Tannery Falls begins just off of H-58 near Washington St., and while the hike does have a few steep spots this is a must-visit for the nature lover as you will like have the place to yourself. Memorial Falls can be reached from the same trail or from a trailhead off of Nestor St. These falls both feature drops of more than 20 feet into horseshoe-shaped rock bowls. Many thanks to the Michigan Nature Association for keeping these waterfalls open to the public and maintaining the trails.

Munising Range Lights – These two lights were established in 1908, and share a white exterior paint scheme with red trim. The front range light is located at M-28 and Hemlock St. and it stands 58 feet tall. The rear range light (pictured) is 38 feet tall but sits on higher ground two blocks to the south of the front range. Both of these historic lights are accessible to the public, and restoration plans are currently in the works.

Camp at Munising Tourist Park Campground – Few places in Munising boast the stunning sunsets that this campground offers, with its lengthy stretch of sandy beach on Lake Superior. The tent sites are situated just a few hundred feet from the beach on the soft sand, providing a rustic feel with the modern comforts of wi-fi and showers. The bathrooms and showers are a bit on the outdated side of things, but the views and friendly people make up for that. Restaurants – Sydney’s, Dogpatch and Muldoon’s are favorites of both locals and travelers, while places like Falling Rock Cafe & Bookstore and Shooters Firehouse Brewpub are newer but already doing a great job of attracting a steady customer base. For ice cream in the summer, check out Dairy Queen or The Frozen Flamingo.

Shopping – Unique Michigan gifts can be found at Das Gift Haus (on M-28), The Gift Station (Cedar St.) as well as inside many of the businesses mentioned above. Muldoon’s, Dogpatch, Riptide Ride, Pictured Rocks Boat Cruises and Glass Bottom Shipwreck Tours all offer a decent selection of gifts in their shopping areas.

Come to Munising at any time of year and you’ll find a huge variety of things to do. From ice climbing to sunbathing, this small Michigan city offers a hive of activity.

Walk around the quaint downtown area. Pick up souvenirs from the gift shops and stock up on snacks to prepare to see some of this amazing region.

Drive to Pictured Rocks National Park to enjoy the stunning sandy beaches and pristine scenery. Hike forested trails that transform into a carpet of flowers in spring and a blaze of color in fall.

Join a kayak tour to understand what makes this park so unique. Paddle alongside the magnificent waterside cliffs for some of the best views around. The mineral deposits in the rocks are responsible for the striking color combinations that lend the park its name. Bring your camera and snap photos of the Petit Arch, Chapel Rock and Indian Head.

See some of this region’s wildlife at Hiawatha National Forest and Seney National Wildlife Refuge. Book a tour of the many waterfalls that dot the region. Take a short walk to Miners Falls, enjoy the romantic atmosphere of Wagner Falls and admire Laughing Whitefish Falls.

Catch a ferry to Grand Island and explore its historical sites by bike or bus or on foot. See a cabin built in 1845, visit an old cemetery and hear fascinating stories about shipwrecked sailors.

Visit in winter to experience this area in a whole new way. Ride a snowmobile through glittering landscapes, cross-country ski the forest trails and watch ice-climbing competitions. Fishing fanatics might like to join a guided ice-fishing tour.

Visit the Eben Ice Caves, formed every year when water runs off cliffs and freezes in unique formations. The hike up to the caves can be a little slippery and cold but you can purchase hot drinks and snacks from the stand at the entrance.

Eat breakfast at the Dog Patch! Loved the waitresses (Thank you for the homemade fudge). Stop in at the Ranger station; very helpful with maps. Ck out; Falling Rocks Bookstore & Cafe. Main Street Pizza is top notch; (R-rated Cinnamon sticks).

Great snowmobiling. People were friendly.

Highly recommend Tahquamenon Falls.

By Lake Michigan is Van's Beach, which is open to the public, its trailhead is right in downtown Leland. There is also Bartholomew Park and Schneider's Beach & Park, which crest along Lake Leelanau. During the summer, the waves come alive with surfers and swimmers, but those who would rather enjoy the water from a distance can also set up a picnic.

Leland is also a very walkable destination, so it is fairly easy to get around. After a day by the lake, consider heading up to the Whaleback Natural Area — a great place to admire the view of the lakes, especially as the sun sets. With hemlock trees framing the glittering water of Lake Michigan, it's virtually impossible not to fall in love.

Cobourg, Ontario

Located right by Lake Ontario, Cobourg may not usually be on a typical tourist's radar, but that doesn't make it any less special. This small town hosts a variety of celebrations and festivals every year that breathe a different life into the community.

The Northumberland Scottish Festival & Highland Games are hosted around mid June annually, where Scottish culture is celebrated with strength contest, bagpipe performances, highland dancing, and more.

Not going to be around for June? No worries! Cobourg hosts plenty of other events throughout the year, including the Strawberry Festival, where strawberry treats and craft booths are set up for visitors to explore, the Cobourg Blues Festival, a celebration of blues music in a family-friendly environment and Canada Day and the Christmas Magic Festival. What Cobourg may lack in size, it more than makes up for in its positive and warmth-filled streets.

Munising, Michigan

The natural beauty of Munising is a sight no one can turn away from. Known as the home to the famous Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and the Hiawatha National Forest, this town has grand, elegant sandstone cliffs that stretch for 15 miles, overlooking the Lake Superior shoreline. These cliffs offer a wild beauty to the already stunning view. With ribbons of copper, iron, manganese, and limonite, these minerals produce a rainbow of colors to contrast the teal-blue surface of the water. It is the most popular summer attraction in Munising, but it certainly isn't the only one worth exploring.

During the months of April, August, October, and November, you are likely to catch a glimpse of the gorgeous Aurora Borealis. Many of the beaches along Lake Superior make for great viewing platforms, so make sure to check out Sand Point Beach, Miners Beach, or Twelvemile Beach if NOAA is predicting strong solar activity.

Grand Marais, Minnesota

For folks who love hiking, Grand Marais is a great destination to check out. Lying along Lake Superior, this small town in Minnesota is very walkable, with multiple routes and trails interconnecting with one another. Park by Artist Point and wind through stunning beaches that will take you through covered bridges, Lake Superior's shoreline, and a final climb up Sweetheart's Bluff.

A better known walking route is The Gunflint Trail that reaches up to 600 feet above sea level up to a maple ridge line. At the top, you'll find Pincushion Mountain Overlook, where tourists are able to get a full view of Lake Superior. These trails are also open to snowshoeing or biking depending on the season and your preference.

Not only is Grand Marais a great place for physical activity, but it's also home to beautiful native flowers! From April to September, the Devil Track Wildflower Sanctuary will be filled with colors and different species of flowers and ferns.

Bayfield, Wisconsin

Known as the gateway to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Bayfield is a charming coastal town lying by Lake Superior. The number one attraction to do here is to kayak the Apostle Islands. Paddling through emerald-like waters while seeing the towering sandstone sea caves is an experience not a lot of people can check off their bucket list. Whether you are experienced or a beginner, there are guided expeditions and leaders to make sure your trip is as safe as possible.

After your day on the water, visit the "Fruit Loop!" Because Bayfield is located by one of the Great Lakes, its climate is perfect for fruits and berries to thrive in farms and fields. Known as the Berry Capital of Wisconsin, Bayfield has a wide variety of strawberries, cherries, blueberries, and blackberries to pick from during the summer months. During the fall, these fruits are then replaced with apples.

Chesterton, Indiana

While Chesterton is located at the southern tip of Lake Michigan, it isn't solely the water views that make this a striking town. Sitting a little to its north is the Indiana Dunes National Park where steeping sand dunes, bogs, marshes, swamps, and woodland forests fill up its space. Combine that with the wind and waters from Lake Michigan, and you get a view that looks as if the tropics and deserts collided with one another. Visitors are able to hike along these sand dunes that extend for more than 17,000 acres.

Back in Chesterton, the art is vibrant and teeming with life. Many studios and galleries are open along the streets for tourists to pop in, as well as independent boutiques that are supported by local artists and creators.

Thessalon, Ontario

This small, quaint town lies by Lake Huron and is an ideal destination for water sports. Though it is located by one of the Great Lakes, its own Thessalon River is an iconic destination itself, where you are also able to catch a glimpse of the Thessalon Red Bridge, which was originally built in the 1880s. During the summer months, many locals and tourists are invited to paddle, kayak, and fish along both the river and the lake. The calm environment may also be a good place for stand-up paddleboarding, canoeing, or simply soaking up the view.

Another great attraction of Thessalon is the migration of countless birds during the spring and fall. Species such as warblers and sparrows will fill the town with their songs, and, seagulls and shorebirds tend to crowd near the water. Look up, and you will also be able to find hawks and falcons soaring above in the sky, making for a stunning view of nature's wonders.

Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario

Entrenched in history and teeming with friendly neighbors, this town shows its heart the moment tourists walk along their cobblestone paths. Niagara-on-the-Lake has the charm of an old village, where its past is well preserved in its buildings and architecture. Bordered by lush gardens and antique shops, its vibe is welcoming and affectionate, especially to tourists.

A trip to Niagara-on-the-Lake would not be complete without visiting one of its 40 wineries. Many have won awards for their Niagara tastes and trying their staple — the Niagara Icewine — is a must. Guided tours are also offered, where visitors can bike from the distilleries to other winery restaurants.

Once you have had your fill of drinks, there is no doubt of where to go next: Niagara Falls . Located just 15 miles away, the world-famous waterfall is the perfect way to end a trip in this gorgeous small town.

The Great Lakes offer some of the most stunning natural views in the world, and it is only fitting that the nearby towns give tourists a taste of that beauty while having a few highlights of their own. Gazing up at the towering sandstone cliffs of Munising or celebrating culture in Cobourg are memories that can only be found in these small, hidden gems.

Upper Peninsula facing more than 2 feet of snow, power outages, blizzard conditions

Michiganders in parts of the Upper Peninsula woke up Wednesday to several inches of snow and a blizzard warning for two counties, with an accumulation of two feet or more expected.

In addition, by Wednesday afternoon, nearly 30,000 homes and offices were reportedly without power, including the National Weather Service in Negaunee Township, near Marquette, which meteorologists there said was operating on a backup generator.

"It happens," Jonathan Voss, a weather service meteorologist, told the Free Press, adding that a blizzard in April or May in the U.P. isn’t common, but it isn’t unheard of, either. "I wouldn’t say it happens every year, but it’s not rare to the point that you don’t see it."

Last year, he said, it snowed in May; and in 2007, the area was hit with a 3-foot blizzard.

"Do not travel unless absolutely necessary," the weather service warned Yoopers, urging anyone who does drive somewhere to have an emergency kit, and if stranded, to remain in their vehicle and not venture off. "Stay inside and stay safe."

The weather service first issued storm warnings early Tuesday, cautioning residents on social media that "heavy wet snow" was expected through at least Thursday as a low-pressure system lifted into the Great Lakes. Regionally, the snowfall was variable, with some places seeing not much, but others getting a foot or more.

By late Tuesday, Menominee County emergency services reported "extreme weather and road conditions," with several trees down and vehicles becoming stuck in the roadway and sliding off roads into ditches.

Voss added that Marquette Sawyer International, the region’s main airport, was snowed in, too.

On top of the snow, the weather service said, there were gusts as high as 50 to 55 mph along Lake Superior and in the Keweenaw, causing blowing snow and reducing visibilities. The wet snow, combined with strong winds, the weather service said, could cause considerable damage.

There were about 30,000 utility customers in Michigan without electricity, according to PowerOutage.us, which tracks outages nationwide. Among the counties most affected, were Menominee, Delta and Ontonagon.

In Marquette and Baraga counties, which have higher elevations, more than 2 feet of snow is expected. There was a blizzard warning in effect until 8 p.m. Wednesday, after that, forecasters said, more snowfall is expected but will eventually taper off.

But that was little consolation to residents Wednesday morning who are ready for winter to end. When the weather service asked rural U.P. residents on Facebook to weigh in with their local totals: "Let us know the time, location, and how much has fallen."

"About 6 inches of heavy wet snow stuck to the trees," one Yooper, who identified his location as "the hills just above Munising," commented. He posted a photo, and wrote, the weight of the snow was so intense, he could "hear branches breaking under the load."
