It started with graffiti back in the day, but now it’s overseen by the city council, and artists get permits to decorate the walls, windows, doors, pipes, and even dumpsters.

The Reptile Gardens is home to lizards, snakes, crocodiles, parrots, Komodo dragons, insects, and amphibians. Many of the animals are featured in entertainment such as the Gator Show, Snake Show, and Birds Show. These animal presentations take place regularly throughout the day in the summer.

The floral gardens have thousands of flowering plants, including several rare and exotic species. The eye-catching Sky Dome at the property hosts several of these tropical plants interspersed with live animals like lizards and frogs.

The giant tortoises on the property are great for a kid-friendly, hands-on interaction and photo opportunity. The Prairie Dog Town at the facility allows visitors to pop their heads into a burrow and see the furry inhabitants at play.

Rapid City makes an excellent base camp for Badlands National Park . It's just over an hour's drive to the Ben Reifel Visitor Center at the east end of the park, passing by several access points along the way. There are several ways to enjoy Badlands National Park. Driving Badlands Loop Road between the Visitor Center and the Pinnacles Entrance is one of the most popular things to do. Several short hiking trails lead from this popular road.

Summer is always a busy time along this route, although it can be blazing hot. The shoulder seasons are the best time to visit the Badlands.

Camping is available at Badlands National Park . This is a great way to see an incredible cosmos spread across the sky at night. The Badlands display a crisp black sky with plenty of stars. The campground hosts night stargazing events throughout the extended summer season (May through September).

Bear Country USA is located south of Rapid City. It is a drive-through wildlife park. The landscape of meadows and pines allows visitors to see North American black bears, wolves, mountain lions, elk, buffalo, deer, bighorn and Dall sheep, and Rocky Mountain goats. They are particularly well known for their large collection of black bears.

The facility offers special events and other seasonal things to do, including Critter Camps and the annual CubFest. Motorcyclists are also encouraged to visit, as the park provides complimentary courtesy cars or open-air buses to tour the grounds.

Bear Country USA operates between spring and late October. The facility closes during inclement weather in the shoulder seasons, and motorists should call ahead if roads are icy. Admission is determined by the number of passengers in each vehicle, with free admission for children under four years old.

Feeding animals in the wildlife park is strictly prohibited, and windows must remain rolled up throughout the tour.

Today, a non-profit corporation currently operates the chapel, and it's free for the public to check out. Visitors enjoy the aesthetic architecture and beautiful surroundings. Guided tours are available, and evening worships are held every night at 7:30 pm.

Admission is free to visit Chapel in the Hills, although donations are encouraged to help sustain this self-supporting attraction. A visitor center and museum in a grass-roofed "Stabbur" is also on-site. Spend some time here learning about the interesting history that brought this Stave Church to Rapid City.

Storybook Island is a children's park that features more than eight acres of classic fairy-tale settings. This enchanted family attraction is accessible with free admission by way of the "London Bridge," a native stone bridge complete with castle turrets.

This facility is open to the public with free admission . And the museum caters to all ages, with compelling exhibits, guided tours, and a Kids' Zone complete with hands-on experiences. Expect to spend at least an hour among all the eye-catching exhibits.

The Museum of Geology also hosts spring and fall annual events aimed at connecting with kids. The museum also hosts field camps in the summer for high school students.

The exhibits at the Journey Museum begin with the formation of the Black Hills more than 2.5 billion years ago. They continue to showcase prehistoric finds in the area, with displays of dinosaur bones and marine reptiles, tracing the cultural history of the Great Plains.

The museum is divided into individual sections: The Archeological Research Center has ancient artifacts, including ancient pottery. The culture of the Sioux Indians is featured in the Sioux Indian Museum. The Minnilusa Pioneer Museum Collection presents people and events, from the fur trade to the present day.

The Journey Museum is open Thursday through Sunday, with more limited hours on Sundays. Admission is discounted for teens and seniors. All the exhibits at the museum could facilitate an entire day, but most visits last between 1 and 2 hours.

Rapid City is home to many public parks and play spaces, maybe none as unique as Dinosaur Park. Alongside a great view of the city on Skyline Drive, this 1930s-established park also has various dinosaurs to pose and take pictures with.

These massive dinosaur statues are iconic landmarks of the city overlooking the horizon and provide a fun reason to get outside and enjoy the view. Nearby, the Skyline Wilderness Area Park provides even more outlets to explore, with an abundance of hiking and biking trails.

The Black Hills Caverns offers a look at the Black Hills beneath visitors' feet. Historically, the caves were used by the Lakota Indians and also by gold prospectors. Today, Visitors can take a one-hour, .75-mile-long tour, or a more moderate half-hour "Crystal Tour." They can also spend time mining for gemstones.

Unique cave formations at Black Hills Caverns include logomites, stalagmites, helictites, purple amethyst, boxwork, and popcorn crystal. The knowledgeable guide leading the cavern expedition describes the significance of these formations and where to see them along the tour.

Cave tours are available between May through September. Moderate walking is required for all tours of the cavern. A visit to the property's extensive gift shop allows patrons to take home rare rocks, special crystals, and other souvenirs.

Art Alley is one of the more unique art installations in South Dakota. Interested observers will find this graffiti showcase between 6th and 7th streets in downtown Rapid City. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The food was diverse enough to meet whatever craving I was dealing with that day, and we had no trouble keeping our days full and busy. 

There were parts of the city that were touristy as heck, but that’s to be expected when you’re this close to Mount Rushmore. Let’s dive into all of the best things to do in Rapid City, South Dakota.

GIMME MY RAPID CITY, SD, ATTRACTIONS MAP!

If you have limited time in Rapid City, you’ll want to start downtown. It’s walkable and a fun escape from all of the people at the big tourist stops a short drive out of the city. 

1. Get some Rapid City breakfast. 

I’m not even that big on breakfast, but I’ll do it for research purposes. My favorite morning spot in Rapid City was Harriet & Oak , a cute coffee shop with an old VW bus inside and a spin on homemade Pop-Tarts inside my belly. 

Flavors vary by the day, so get one of each with your morning cup of coffee and call it the perfect start to your day.

We got all kinds of recommendations for morning noshes elsewhere. Here are a few more for some variety in and around downtown Rapid City:

• Black Hills Bagels : The fun neon signage beckons visitors inside to experience their famous bagels. There are loads of flavors to choose from like sweet vanilla nut and savory spinach parmesan.
• Colonial House Restaurant & Bar : This long-running establishment was right by our accommodations, so I do feel some regret over missing out. We heard great things about their chicken fried steak if you’re into that.
• Tally’s Silver Spoon : A local told us this one was a little pretentious. While I don’t think I want that out of Rapid City, this one has always gotten a lot of buzz for its breakfast dishes. It does seem a little pricey for the area.

2. Meet the presidents of downtown Rapid City.

Rapid City is known as the City of Presidents, among other things (probably). Find your favorite among the bronze statues set up all over downtown. 

The statues didn’t appear overnight. The first four were commissioned and privately funded in 2000. The artists vary, and there is quite a bit of research involved in coming up with statues that represent the interests and achievements of each president. 

Fun fact: William Howard Taft is the only one that isn’t true to each president’s height and weight. He went on a diet for the project to save on the cost of bronze. Ouch.

The Abraham Lincoln status is probably the most popular photo, but Martin Van Buren sits on a bench you can share with him. 

3. Bop around Main Street Square.

Rapid City’s Main Street Square is the city’s gathering space. Expect seasonal decor if you’re here around any holidays, live music and festivals, art installations, and opportunities to chill out after a long day of tourist activities.

In the winter, bring your skates for the ice skating rink they set up when it’s chilly.

4. Check out the weird stuff at Presidential Pawn.

Hear me out. Yes, it’s definitely a pawn shop. You’re not here to shop or sell, though. Spend a few minutes checking out the display cases of unique historic artifacts. 

You’ll find Michael Jackson’s sequined glove, the original negative of JFK Jr.’s heartbreaking salute to his father’s coffin, and the world’s smallest dog.

It’s all free to see unless you get yourself a new solid gold belt buckle. That’ll cost you. The number of guns and armor was definitely a bummer, but that’s why you’re not giving these folks any money.

5. Walk through the Art Alley.

There’s no real coherent thread here and it’s not pretty by any means, but it’s an example of self-expression in a place where you wouldn’t expect it. If you’re downtown anyway, it’s worth a quick walkthrough to admire a space that’s certainly different every time you’re here.

6. See more art at the Dahl Arts Center.

The Dahl Arts Center is Rapid City’s cultural hub. Visit for rotating exhibits that show off contemporary, traditional, and local art or engage with local artists at one of their regular events. This place has a vibrant program of interactive activities for art lovers out there.

Visits here are always free. If you visit on Friday nights, you’ll be treated to some free live music, too.

7. Meet a Food Network celebrity.

Bokujo Ramen is Justin Warner’s eatery in downtown Rapid City. If you follow celebrity chefs, you may recognize him from the Food Network Star . The accolades are deserved.

This place offers western takes on ramen. I didn’t think I’d love that, but I did. Brian picked the one with bison brisket and it was pretty dang delicious. The staff, including the chef, is all super friendly, too.

If you love what they’re doing here, pop by Warner’s wine bar, BB’s Natural . It specializes in natural wines, naturally.

8. Sip on Rapid City wine.

No, I’m not having a stroke. There’s another wine bar in downtown Rapid City. 

Our pick for some wine at the end of a day of Rapid City attractions was Firehouse Wine Cellars . The service was great and the wines were decent. They also have wine slushies in the summer that we were given samples of, and there were no regrets on that.

They’re the wine side of Firehouse Brewing Company, the very first brewery in Rapid City. As the winery has much better reviews than the beer side , that’s where we focused our energies.

9. Drink the best Rapid City beer.

We didn’t visit the Firehouse Brewing Company, but that doesn’t mean we skipped out on beer in Rapid City.

We started at Hay Camp Brewing Company . They had a wide variety of tasters available with sours that were big on the funk. If you know anything about my beer tastes, you’ll know that’s just how I like it. I loved the large tasting room with its cow-print chairs.

Here are a few more for you outside of downtown if you’re interested in a Rapid City beer crawl:

• Dakota Point Brewing : This one is just west of downtown Rapid City. Enjoy lagers and ales at this casual dog-friendly space. We didn’t partake in the food, but they typically have a great food truck program going.
• Lost Cabin Beer Co. : This one is very close to Dakota Point. We really liked the space here. The patio is nice and dog-friendly. We enjoyed a yummy gose, amber, and a few barrel-aged beers during our visit.
• Zymurcracy Brewing Company : We missed out on this veteran-owned option south of the city because it just wasn’t near anything else we wanted to do. It looks like they have a great variety of both classic and inventive styles.

10. Eat Rapid City’s best pizza.

The Independent Ale House was our favorite casual eatery in Rapid City. They have 50 beers on tap and a variety of pizzas, including a mashed potato pizza that got me in the door.

They were also selling a rainbow dessert in honor of Pride Month during our visit, so we obviously had to order one. Our waiter actually made a batch that morning which was very cute. It was also very delicious.

11. Experience Rapid City nightlife.

Rapid City doesn’t have the most vibrant scene when it comes to nightlife, but if you’re not ready to head back to your accommodations after dinner, you have some options.

Press Start is an arcade bar with two levels of games open late on the weekends. Aby’s Rapid City is just around the corner from the Independent Ale House and hosts fun events like drag shows and live music.

For the classiest time in town, head to the Vertex Sky Bar for rootftop cocktails. That one is open late nightly.

You’ll need to drive to most of these Rapid City things to do. If you believe in yourself and love steps, some of these sights are just north of downtown and Omaha Street. These are still all stops we made during our time in town.

12. Explore Black Hills history at The Journey Museum and Learning Center.

See art from native artists and an honest portrayal of Native American history in the region at this museum. 

You’ll learn about the theft of native lands and the city’s attempts at forcing native people to assimilate. One exhibit included a letter from a woman pleading with local officials to allow her son to keep his hair long before starting school. The request was denied.

There’s a decent dinosaur exhibit, too, but the history exhibits are most impressive.

13. Check out a chunk of the Berlin Wall.

Visit Memorial Park for one of the city’s best green spaces along Rapid Creek and an exhibit dedicated to a piece of the real Berlin Wall. There’s some informational signage all around that tells the story of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

14. Indulge your sweet tooth at Rushmore Candy Company.

I dropped $24 on truffles, taffy, gummies, and nonpareils for Brian because for whatever reason that’s what gets him going. There is a lot at the Rushmore Candy Company that may feel like a trap, like the chocolate-covered pickles and whatever Sex Olives are.

There’s also a lot here that looks and is very delicious. Come with the kids if you dare.

15. Visit the Museum of Geology.

The campus of South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is home to this free museum. It’s worth a stop if you’re looking for what to do in Rapid City, SD, on a rainy day.

Honestly, if you love dinos and paleontology you’ll want to visit whether you get caught in the rain or not.

16. Get goofy at Dinosaur Park.

The Dinosaur Park is one of the best outdoor attractions in Rapid City. On top of the opportunities for goofy photos with the resident dinosaurs, you can enjoy some of the best views of the city while you’re here. 

Wear sneakers to take the path up as the park continues work on the nice set of stairs that will get you there in a less dusty way. The drive up to the park is fantastic, too. Enjoy views of Rapid City’s fanciest homes along the way.

17. Hike the Petrified Forest Trailhead.

You’ll see this on the drive up to the Dinosaur Park. Choose from a variety of interconnected trails that give you both city views and an introduction into the prehistoric intrigue of the region.

There aren’t as many petrified trees here as the big fossil sites around the country , but you’ll get a taste of ancient forest on the main trail off Skyline Drive.

18. Find your favorite green space.

I already mentioned Memorial Park, but Rapid City has quite a few areas for you to relax. Wilson Park was a daily favorite for us as it was so close to our accommodations. It had regular pickleball players, too, so there’s decent people-watching potential here.

Sioux Park and Founders Park are two more charming options if you love a good picnic space.

19. Take your pup to the Robbinsdale Park Dog Off-Leash Area.

This large outdoor space is a great place for pups to frolic, but you’ll want to keep them close to avoid the tall grasses. There are ticks in these parts, and our dog has definitely brought them home in similar scenarios.

Walk the long loop around the park, a stroll good boys and girls that stick close will enjoy.

Parking for the dog section is beyond the BMX park. We saw some little kids practicing baby BMX while we were there. It was as cute as it sounds.

20. Explore the rest of Rapid City’s dining scene.

One of the most fun things to do in Rapid City is eat, truly. Rapid City has a diverse dining scene that I very much appreciated. A local recommended a stop at Himayalan Kitchen , and as we are unable to deny ourselves delicious Indian and Nepalese cuisine, we made it happen. 

We went rogue and ordered cheese-stuffed naan, fish masala, and chicken saag during dinner here, all items we’d never ordered before. I’m a paneer girl all the way, by the way. Everything was great. Kick things off with their in-house herbal iced tea.

Here are a few more options if you’re looking for a nosh:

• Pour 54 Taphouse: This one came highly recommended to us by our sommelier at Firehouse Wine Cellars, but we ran out of time.
• Kathmandu Bistro: No, you cannot have enough Indian food. If you’re in downtown Rapid City, this is the second-best option after Himalayan Kitchen.

21. See a Wild West show. 

The Fort Hays Chuckwagon Supper & Show at 2255 Fort Hayes Drive includes dinner and a music variety show. You can also just come by for a free visit to a piece of the Dances With Wolves set. 

That’s all we did because the show itself sounded a little cheesy, expensive, and would have eaten into a full evening. If you’re traveling with the fam, it could be fun I suppose.

There is a ride here called Buffalo Hunt that looked like a good time, too. If we had more time I could have been persuaded to get some tickets for that. 

22. Visit the Chapel in the Hills.

This beautiful little church run by friendly volunteers is modeled after a similar one in Norway. There’s a tiny museum and informational signage on site to tell you how the chapel came to be, or you can just chat up one of the helpful docents.

If you visit on a nice day, there’s a meditative prayer walk behind the chapel. We skipped it because the bugs were killers at that point in the day.

23. See the pride of Rapid City.

I don’t usually recommend stops at McDonald’s on my city itineraries, but one location east of downtown Rapid City boasts a large Quarter Pounder Statue that I would 10/10 recommend. No, we still didn’t eat at McDonald’s. We had better things to do.

We spent quite a bit of time on day trips outside of Rapid City during our week there, as there really is so much to do just outside of the city limits. (I’ll get into that in a second!)

If you’re here for a bit longer, I have a few more options for you, especially if you’re traveling with kids:

• Visit the largest reptile zoo in the United States at Reptile Gardens.
• Take the kids to Storybook Island.
• Solve the mystery at the Cosmos Mystery Area.

Things to Do Near Rapid City, SD

Rapid City is a great base for day trips out of the city itself. In fact, much of what you’re in South Dakota for is likely within an hour or so outside of Rapid City.

If you don’t feel like driving, there are options for guided experiences to some of these that start in Rapid City. Check these out for starters:

Let’s get into a few attractions near Rapid City, South Dakota, that are likely one of the main reasons you’re here.

29. Wall Drug

You certainly won’t miss the signage for this place. There are billboards all over the highway no matter what direction you’re coming from in your South Dakota travels. As such, Wall Drug is worth a visit just to see this legendary roadside attraction for yourself. 

I’m not even sure how I’d describe it other than sprawling. There’s a pharmacy that suits the name, but also an ice cream shop, a boots store, and a miniature Mount Rushmore. It’s about an hour’s drive from Rapid City if you don’t catch it on the way in or out. 

30. Badlands National Park

You can basically arrive at what resembles another planet in under an hour from Rapid City if you visit the Badlands. These are some of the most otherworldly landscapes in the United States. 

I put together a detailed guide on spending a day in the Badlands , one of my favorite national parks . If you’re comfy on this post, the quintessential experience in the park is the Notch Trail. It involves a ladder up and back down to reach the end, so it’s not for the faint of heart.

31. Mount Rushmore National Memorial

This national park site about a half hour from Rapid City isn’t without its controversies. I’d still say it’s worth a visit if you understand that context as one of the most popular things to do in Keystone and the surrounding area.

The Crazy Horse Memorial is a popular add-on to Rapid City itineraries that include Mount Rushmore, but I’m not as enthusiastic about that one. The more I read about it from a Native American perspective, the more it feels like a grift. Don’t feel bad about skipping that one.

32. Custer State Park

This picturesque gem about an hour from Rapid City is the ideal day trip for wildlife spotting and communing with nature. The park spans over 71,000 acres but is still manageable as an easy trip out of town. 

With limited time, drive the Wildlife Loop Road for a chance to see bison, pronghorns, and bighorn sheep. If you want to hike , start easy with a loop around lovely Sylvan Lake. Aggressive hikers may be into climbing South Dakota’s highest peak on the Black Elk Peak Loop.

33. Deadwood

I didn’t love Deadwood. The Old West town defines the idea of a tourist trap, complete with overpriced gift shops, mediocre food, and a lack of authenticity. If you want to visit anyway and looking for things to do in Deadwood, I have an honest guide to the touristy town . You do you.

Note: Many travelers combine Deadwood with a trip to nearby Spearfish. We didn’t visit, but a popular highlight of things to do in Spearfish is the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway.

34. The Mammoth Site

This paleontological site in Hot Springs, South Dakota, was such a pleasant surprise. You only need about an hour here, but you’ll be able to tour a dig site in situ. That means it’s in progress. (I had to look it up.) 

There are additional exhibits on short-faced bears and other creatures found in sinkholes around South Dakota, but the real goods are in the dig site. You’ll see Beauty and The Beast, two mammoth skulls that definitely fit that description.

35. Wind Cave National Park

Wind Cave National Park is about an hour south of Rapid City. It’s known for its complex passageways and the distinctive box work on its ceilings. 

Fun fact: About 95% of the world’s box work is found here. It’s important enough that NASA has studied it on research expeditions to the cave.

We’ve seen quite a few caves at this point and this one was neat to see, but unless you’re at the very front of your tour it’s more of a walk through a cave with a few interpretive stops. How much fun you’ll have on your tour can also depend on who else is on your tour.

We had some very young kids on our tour. One had a loud fit, a sound that seemed to carry the length of the cave, and then passed out. We learned later that he missed his nap that day, something I’m told is a sure predictor for meltdowns.

Another surly dad on our tour day was wearing a shirt advertising Deadwood that read, “I’m not a dick. Just kidding. Go fuck yourself.” He had his small kids with him.

In any case, the clientele on our visit wasn’t the best of the best, but the cave itself was neat. The drive to the cave is scenic, too. Watch for bison and all of the prairie dogs along the way in prairie dog towns that are getting hard to manage across the state. 

Note: If you love a good cave, Jewel Cave National Monument is another option. The two caves are just a half hour apart, so you could even see them on the same day if you’re some cave fanatic. 

36. Hermosa

The town of Hermosa was on our list for one reason only: Lintz Brothers Pizza . No, we don’t usually make it a point to day trip out of destinations for pizza… unless we’re talking Pequod’s . 

You can stop by this place after visiting the Mammoth Site or Wind Cave National Park, as it’s south of Rapid City.

We were here for the Pie-Mac, a pie inspired by that one sandwich at McDonald’s. The story checks out. It tasted just like a Big Mac in pizza form. The Bird Dog, a riff on hot dog pizza, was almost even better.

We found this place to be pricey for the size of the pizzas we got, but I’m not going to pretend like they weren’t delicious.

37. Hill City

This is the only one on the list that we didn’t get to, but I do wish we made it happen over Deadwod. This town in the Black Hills looks pretty charming. 

As far as things to do in Hill City, visit the South Dakota State Railroad Museum, take a ride on the Black Hills Central Railroad, or stroll Main Street.

If you’re here to hike, Hill City is a great base for adventurers interested in the Mickelson Trail. The George S. Mickelson Trail is a rail trail that runs nearly 109 miles through the state.

Things You Can Skip in Rapid City

There are things I’d do in Rapid City on a return trip and there are things I’d skip no matter how many times I found myself here. Bear Country USA is one of the things I’d skip.

What is the controversy with Bear Country USA?

The controversy with Bear Country USA relates to a court case where the former owners were accused of breeding bears for the purpose of selling their gallbladders. 

The men responsible for the scandal are no longer there — one died in a car wreck — but it’s still run by the same family. It’s just different offspring.

Now, I’m not against zoos if they’re well-run and contribute to worldwide conservation efforts. I’m more cautious about privately owned animal attractions, especially when there’s a history of potential animal abuse. 

I paid $1 for access to the news articles on the scandal as covered by the Rapid City Journal so that I wasn’t making any snap judgments. Here’s what I learned.

The criminal charges date back to 2006 when two members of the Casey family, which owns and operates Bear Country USA, pleaded guilty to selling bear gallbladders to buyers in Spearfish and Alaska. This was all uncovered by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

The corporation also pleaded guilty to buying and transporting grizzly bears from Minnesota. 

Was it a long time ago? Yes. Should you be visiting a place that still breeds bears for the public’s enjoyment? Probably not. It’s a no for me on this one.

The best time of year to visit Rapid City, South Dakota, is right before the start of the summer season. You’ll have pleasant temperatures and all of the outdoor activities that make this such a fun place to visit.

We visited the first week of June and it was pretty ideal. We did get some early summer thunderstorms by late afternoon, but we were getting early starts to our days there. I’d recommend the same.

Early fall is another great time to visit for fall colors in the Black Hills, nice weather, and fewer tourists. Spring can be hit or miss when it comes to rain.

I wouldn’t recommend winter travel unless you’re here for winter sports activities.

How many days should I spend in Rapid City?

You should spend at least two days in Rapid City. That gives you a full day in the city itself and another day for the best Rapid City day trips.

Many travelers only pass through to see Mount Rushmore, but as you need to drive to Keystone for that, that doesn’t really allow you to experience Rapid City.

How safe is downtown Rapid City, SD?

Downtown Rapid City, SD, is quite safe.

As with any city , there may be occasional instances of petty crimes, so it’s always best to be aware of your surroundings, avoid leaving valuables unattended, and use well-lit areas when walking at night.

Is Rapid City, SD, expensive?

Rapid City, SD, is expensive if you visit during the summer. That’s when the city gets most of its tourists, so hotels, flights, and even entertainment will cost you extra.

I found Rapid City to be generally more expensive than larger population hubs, but I’ve found that to be expected. Less competition means higher prices.

Where to Stay in Rapid City

You have quite a few options for accommodations in Rapid City. We stayed at the Baymont by Wyndham on our first trip to Rapid City. The staff was awesome and worked with us on refunds when we had to cut our trip short due to a family emergency. That warrants kudos in my book.

I also have to give the La Quinta by Wyndham a shoutout as they’re a reliable stay for us when we’re traveling with our dog.

Why should I visit Rapid City, South Dakota?

You should visit Rapid City, South Dakota, for the attractions it offers within the city limits and as a base for exploration elsewhere. We had a full week in Rapid City and it felt very busy.

Rapid City offers easy access to the Black Hills, the Badlands, and some impressive outdoor adventuring. While attractions near Rapid City were more impressive for us, we still enjoyed our time spent in Rapid City proper.

Surrounded by protected lands and iconic landmarks, Rapid City in South Dakota is an underrated destination. Whether you’re traveling solo, or with your partner, friends or family, there’s something in this charming and friendly city for you.

In the foothills of the Black Hills, Rapid City is rich in prehistoric history. Some of the things to do in Rapid City provide the chance to journey back to the age of dinosaurs with fossils dotted throughout. It’s a city of culture and learning; an opportunity to get to know Lakota and Sioux Native Americans, and also the rugged yet beautiful landscapes they call home.

In the heart of Rapid City is a vibrant downtown where you’ll find family-friendly museums, art, and parks among great local restaurants.

14. Journey Museum

Celebrating the Black Hills, the Journey Museum helps to preserve thousands of years’ worth of history within the area. The Black Hills are far more than a mountain range strewn across the Great Plains. It’s a place of heritage, Native American, and pioneer culture.

The exhibits are laid out in order, beginning with the formation of the mountain range. The range received its name from the Lakota, who called it Paha Sapa or the “hills that are black”. Visitors will then get to know the area’s prehistoric past, including fossils.

Afterwards, you’ll learn all about Native American history, including that of the Lakota and Sioux Native Americans. You can also explore the Minnilusa Pioneer Museum.

13. Black Hills Caverns

In the 1880s, Black Hill Caverns were discovered for the first time in the contemporary era. Searching for gold, a group of miners came upon the cave. However, the Lakota Native Americans had been using the cave’s various calcite crystals that are known to enhance mental clarity for hundreds of years.

Today, the caverns are not just a wonderful place to explore local geography, but also history. The main cave journeys into the earth for 3,400 feet that are laden with stalactites, popcorn rocks, and helictites. Your knowledgeable guide will take you on one of two tours. The first, venturing into the cave’s first level. While the other explores all three with around a mile of walking.

12. Watiki Water Park

There are some wonderful rainy day activities on this list of things to do in Rapid City, but if the sun is blazing, there’s only one place to go. Watiki Water Park is the answer to cool off on a hot summer’s day with a sprawling mix of thrilling water slides and swimming pools.

Importantly, the park is open year round, so even if the snow is tumbling down, you can still get your thrill on. The water park is a popular attraction, surrounded by several hotels, bars, and restaurants. It’s a great place to meet with friends or hang as a family.

Highlights include a lazy river, the Maui’s Body Slide, and a place to play basketball in the water.

11. Dinosaur Park

South Dakota has lots of connections to the age of dinosaurs. It’s a part of state culture and something you can experience here in Rapid City. Dinosaur Park was created in the 1930s and is perched on a hill that grants excellent views of downtown.

Dinosaur Park is home to seven replicas of various dinosaurs, each designed by Emmet Sullivan. The park makes for the perfect photo op, especially for younger kids who can get their photo taken with a T-Rex, a triceratops, or an apatosaurus, among others.

Alongside each dinosaur is an information board that explores how much they weighed, what they lived off of, and where they were discovered in and around South Dakota.

10. Badlands National Park

One of the most popular reasons people visit Rapid City is its proximity to the Badlands National Park. It’s the perfect base to explore, being only an hour east of the park.

Badlands National Park may just be one of the most underrated national parks in the United States. Yellowstone, Yosemite, and the Grand Canyon are rightfully at the top, but the prismatic buttes and sandstone pinnacles help to create some of the most spectacular scenery you’ll ever have the pleasure of seeing.

Among the rock spires is a mixed-grass prairie ecosystem that is home to magical sunrises and sunsets. You can hike, four-wheel-drive, and venture out into the backcountry for a memorable wilderness experience.

9. Museum of Geology

Rapid City has an abundance of free attractions that make it a great place for budget travelers and families to visit. One of the best examples is the Museum of Geology. Great for all ages, visitors can learn about regional geology through exhibits that focus on minerals and paleontology.

The museum is an important part of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. As you explore, you’ll learn all about life below the surface. The major highlight is the museum’s stunning collection of reptiles. These include land-going mammals and reptiles from the Jurassic and Cretaceous eras, plus prehistoric marine life.

You can join guided tours for further insight and the young ones can even enjoy hands-on fun in the Kid’s Zone.

8. Art Alley

While enjoying the sights of Downtown Rapid City, including Main Street Square, leave plenty of time on the itinerary for Art Alley. This free, open exhibition features an entire alley covered in murals and captivating graffiti.

Graffiti alleys are growing more and more common, while becoming a great way to liven up an area and allow residents to express themselves. The colorful works of art span all genres, with some harboring mythical creatures, pop culture, and social messages.

You’ll find the alley between 6th and 7th street. Such is the temporary nature of each creation that if you get a chance to visit twice, it won’t be the same experience.

7. Bear Country USA

A short trip south of Rapid City, Bear Country USA is your chance to view some of the most intimidating (and cute) animals in the United States. As the name suggests, there is no shortage of bears here who play among the gigantic pines and wander through the lush meadows.

The experience begins with an interesting drive-thru experience. However, burgers aren’t on the menu. From the comfort of your car, you’ll drive three miles through a wildlife park past several enclosures. These not only feature black and brown bears, but also wolves, elk, cougars, and the notorious bobcat.

The animals are often just as curious and may approach and check out visitors as they drive by. Afterwards, put the car in park and get about on foot as you make your way through the Wildlife Walk.

6. Mount Rushmore National Memorial

With two millions visitors annually, the Mount Rushmore National Memorial is one of the most popular landmarks in the United States. The good news for travelers is that it’s only 30 minutes south of Rapid City.

The carved rock, which features the faces of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, and Thomas Jefferson, took over a dozen years to complete. Upon opening in 1941, it immediately became an iconic site, one with few international peers.

Visiting Mount Rushmore is free, and you can enjoy some amazing views from the park’s grounds. For further insight, join a ranger guided tour or make your way along the Presidential Trail. Afterwards, check out the Old West town of Keystone.

5. Storybook Island

For more than 60 years, Storybook Island has been entertaining families using a memorable mix of fairy tales and nursery rhymes to create an immersive experience. So if you’ve got young kids and are thinking about a park day, then put this on your itinerary.

Storybook Island is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day each year and is only a brief drive from Downtown Rapid City. The park itself is free to visit, but Storybook also has a train ride and carousel that you can enjoy for just $3.

As you ride the train or walk around the expansive park, you’ll stumble upon over 100 fairytale settings from many books and movies you and your kids adore. There are also regular theater productions.

4. South Dakota Air and Space Museum

Home to iconic planes, fighter jets, and artifacts from throughout history, the South Dakota Air and Space Museum will take you on a journey through the 20th century. Featuring a mix of galleries, exhibits and real aircraft, there are multiple ways to learn about the South Dakota’s and indeed the country’s rich aviation history.

Highlights of your visit will no doubt be the 30 military planes that flew in the Second World War. These are complemented by missiles and weapons that formed a key part in the success of the Allies.

Beyond wartime, you can get to know the pioneers of aviation history and just how far technology, science, and engineering have come. From when the Wright brothers first touched down, to the present day.

3. Chapel in the Hills

Arguably the most striking piece of architecture in Rapid City is the Chapel in the Hills. In the 1100s, the Borgund Stave Church was built in Norway before becoming a famous Nordic structure. Inspired by this and Rapid City’s own Norwegian heritage, Reverend Harry Gregerson set about recreating the chapel.

It was completed in 1969, and for six years hosted a Lutheran radio network. It was later moved to its current location among the lush green forests, the perfect setting for such a magical chapel.

As soon as you arrive, you’ll begin to admire the intricate woodwork that includes gilded designs, Norse dragonheads, and plenty of symbolic additions. To learn more about this chapel and the original, make your way over to the onsite museum and visitor center.

2. Reptile Gardens

Here, you’ll have the chance to get up close and personal with an incredible range of reptiles from around the world. The city’s Reptile Gardens boasts every reptile you can think of, from Komodo dragons, to lizards, snakes, and crocodiles. It’s enough to make a reptile fan out of anyone!

Many of these amazing species are featured in a number of captivating shows. Crowds gather for the gardens’ live entertainment, which includes the Snake Show and the Gator Show. But despite its name, there’s much more to the Reptile Gardens than just reptilians.

Visitors can explore the park’s prismatic floral gardens that feature exotic and rare plants from around the world. A highlight of this is the Sky Dome that harbors a tropical rainforest complete with lizards and frogs.

1. Downtown Rapid City

Between Omaha and Columbus street is where you’ll find the vibrant Downtown Rapid City. It’s the perfect spot to begin your travels here, with plenty of things to do for all kinds of people, young and old.

In the heart of downtown is Main Street Square. This is a popular communal gathering space where you’ll find playgrounds and open spaces for the kids, a stage that has summer music concerts along with shopping and plenty to eat. However, one of the most unique parts of Downtown Rapid City is its public art display showcasing 43 presidents. Set across dozens of street corners, you’ll discover life-sized replicas of past leaders which complement the city’s amazing range of public art.

How do I get to Rapid City?

There are a couple of ways to get to Rapid City, the first being to fly directly into Rapid City Regional Airport. While this is a good option, flights may be limited depending on where you’re traveling from.

Another popular option is to fly into Denver International Airport or Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport and then drive the rest of the way. The drive to Rapid City is about 6 hours from Denver and 8 hours from Minneapolis and will ensure you have a car during your trip which can be helpful.

The Rapid Transit System does offer public transportation throughout Rapid City, though a rental car is probably the best option for your trip. Rapid City is fairly spread out, and if you want to explore the surrounding Black Hills, you will definitely want a car handy.

What is the best time to visit Rapid City?

The best time to visit Rapid City is from late spring to fall. South Dakota is known for very cold and snowy winters, so avoid visiting from November to March. By April and May, the weather will begin to warm and offer plenty of mild, sunny days. Summers can get quite hot in Rapid City, so be prepared for higher temperatures in June and July. Late summer and early fall are very nice times to visit because the weather will be slightly cooler, and there will be fewer crowds as well. 

Where should I stay in Rapid City?

There are plenty of hotel options in Rapid City to accommodate a wide variety of budgets. The Residence Inn Rapid City is a great hotel for those who want clean and comfortable accommodations at a very reasonable price point. For those who value location, the historic Hotel Alex Johnson Rapid City is conveniently located in downtown Rapid City. Sample 3-Day Rapid City Weekend Itinerary

Day 1 in rapid city:.

What better way to start your trip than by walking among the dinosaurs? Dinosaur Park is a quirky public park overlooking Rapid City. The park is free to visit and features seven large dinosaur sculptures, including a T-rex and Stegosaurus. Sure, the dinosaur sculptures aren’t the most lifelike creations, but the park is an awesome spot to get outside and catch some beautiful views of Rapid City. Make sure to take plenty of photos, too; your Instagram is sure to stand out if you share a dinosaur selfie!

Spend your afternoon exploring Chapel in the Hills , an exact replica of the iconic Borgund Strave church in Norway. The chapel is a beautiful spot, and the surrounding Black Hills will make you feel as though you’ve wandered into a real-life fairytale. Chapel in the Hills is free to visit and features a museum detailing the history of the building as well as some walking trails to enjoy the property. The chapel even offers evening worship services if you care to get the full experience. 

Despite being a relatively small town, Rapid City offers a number of excellent breweries that make for a fun night out. Even if you don’t drink, it’s always a good time to grab a bite to eat and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere. Firehouse Brewing Company and Lost Cabin Beer Company are some of the highest-rated breweries in town, offering great beer and food in a relaxed setting.

Day 2 in Rapid City:

Custer State Park is located about 40 minutes south of Rapid City, but the drive is 100% worth it once you step foot in the park. Custer State Park offers a ton of outdoor activities for everyone to enjoy, from kayaking in Sylvan Lake to hiking Black Elk Peak, the tallest mountain in the state, and rock-climbing the iconic Needles rock formations. Custer State Park is also home to 1,400 bison, and you have a great chance of spotting the herd as you drive along Wildlife Loop Road! Tickets are $20 per vehicle which will give you access for 7 days.

Instead of heading straight home from Custer State Park, turn the drive into a scenic loop by popping over the Mount Rushmore National Mem orial. The memorial is only 30 minutes away from Custer State Park and is probably South Dakota’s most iconic destination. Seeing the rock carvings in person is seriously awe-inspiring, and the park offers a number of viewpoints, museums, and walking trails. Tickets are $10 per vehicle with discounts available for seniors and military personnel.  

After a long day of adventuring, rest your tired feet by catching a performance at the Black Hills Symphony Orchestra . The orchestra has been around since the 1930’s, and provides concerts for the whole Black Hills region. From well-known classical works to unique musical performances, the Black Hills Symphony Orchestra puts on some amazing shows that the whole family will love. Concert tickets range from $22 to $32 depending on which tier you choose, and the orchestra also offers student and military discounts.

Day 3 in Rapid City:

A trip to South Dakota wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Badlands National Park , located a little less than an hour east of Rapid City. The Badlands feature some incredibly unique terrain and rock formations, making you feel as though you’ve stepped onto another planet. Whether you choose to drive through the Badlands or do some hiking, there are plenty of ways to experience this one-of-a-kind environment. $30 per vehicle entry fee.  

On your way back to Rapid City, make a pit stop at Wall Drug , a massive general store in the town of Wall. Wall Drug is known worldwide for its impressive size and quirky features, such as an animatronic T-rex and a massive jackrabbit statue. You can spend hours wandering through the shops at Wall Drug, but make sure to grab a fresh-baked donut and 5-cent cup of coffee before you leave!

Closeout your trip to Rapid City by spending the evening in Main Street Square . Main Street Square is a great place to do some shopping and grab a bite to eat. Over the summers, you can frequently find live concerts and events being hosted in the square. During wintertime, meanwhile, the square will be transformed into a massive ice rink for visitors to enjoy. 

Other things to do in Rapid City

• Learn about all kinds of reptiles at Reptile Gardens , the largest reptile park in the world (closed December-February; ticket prices vary depending on the season)
• Walk through Storybook Island , a charming park featuring famous characters and locations from various children’s books (open May-September)
• Get up close and personal with bears, elk, and buffalo at Bear Country USA , a drive-thru wildlife park (open April/May-November; $20 for adults $15 for kids 5-12 with military and senior discounts available) 
• Visit Crazy Horse Memorial which, when complete, will be the world’s largest mountain carving (ticket prices vary depending on the season) 
• Take a private all-day Spearfish Canyon Tour!
• Spot Bison and fossils in this Bison Safari and Mammoth Site tour!
• Participate a self-guided scavenger hunt around the city!

Other tips to know before visiting Rapid City

August is a very busy time to visit thanks to the nearby Sturgis Motorcycle Rally – check the dates online before planning your trip if you’d like to avoid excessive crowds!

One Weekend in Rapid City Packing List :

Even though you are only in Rapid City for one weekend, it is best to arrive prepared to avoid having to waste time by running to the store for forgotten items. Below you will find everything (okay…maybe not  everything ) you will need for 3 days in Rapid City!

• Comfy walking shoes  (for your walking tours or amusement parks. I wear my  keens  EVERYWHERE. Not only are they great hiking shoes, they are great for water shoes as well if visiting in the summer. No socks needed 🙂
• Travel sized toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, lotion, face wash, deoderant…you know all your daily essentials).  This is a perfect travel case   that meets TSA regulations!
• All the clothes (this one is going to be a personal choice as to how much to bring). I am typically good with three nice dinner outfits, my  favorite joggers , a comfy shirt, some atheltic shorts, and a swim suit cover up.
• Makeup and hair supplies
• ID and any other travel documents or itineraries needed.
• Phone charger
• Kindle or current reading book
• Any needed medications
• Airplane snacks and  water bottle  (bring an empty bottle along to save plastic and money at the airport and on your daily adventures)
• Sunglasses! (I always forget this one)
• Andddd of course your camera!  A gopro  would be fun for these adventures!
